Pollution is known as the introduction of unwanted substances into the environment, which disrupts the natural environment and overall health of the planet. One of the major concerns of the pollution is climate change.

The history of pollution is older than one century. In 1896, a Swedish scientist named Svante Arrhenius first predicted the changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, which may substantially increase the surface temperature and because a major cause of global warming.

The first international summit to consider pollution as a global concern was the 1972 Stockholm Convention. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was the outcome of this international climate convention. UNEP deals with all environmental problems at the global level and organizes various environmental programs to raise awareness about pollution, climate change, global warming, etc.

Today, our terrestrial and marine ecosystems are facing existential threats due to pollution. Deforestation, industrial waste, and chemical pollutants are wreaking havoc on biodiversity. The loss of habitats, the decline of species, and the imbalance in our ecosystems paint a grim picture of the toll pollution takes on our natural world.

There are different types of pollution, such as air, water, noise, soil, radioactivity, thermal, plastic, etc. Burning of fossil fuels, industrial processes, vehicle emissions, and agricultural activities causes air pollution. Water pollution is caused by industrial discharges, agricultural runoff, untreated sewage, oil spills, and dumping of chemicals in rivers, ponds and lakes. Improper disposal of industrial waste, agricultural practices, use of pesticides and fertilizers, and contamination from hazardous substances cause soil pollution. The list goes on as new types of pollution are being discovered by scientists.

Pollution not only affects our environment but also disrupts our daily life as it affects our health, and biodiversity and is a major cause of climate change. Every country and its citizens must recognize the importance of addressing pollution through regulations, sustainable alternative practices, and environmental conservation efforts.

Good Morning Class Teacher and All My Dear Friends! Today, as you all know is Wednesday and the speech giving day and my speech topic is Air Pollution.

Since air pollution has become an alarming issue these days; air pollution is defined by W.H.O. (World Health Organization) as “the presence in air, of substances put there by acts of man in concentrations sufficient to interfere with the comfort, safety, or health of man or with the full use or enjoyment of his property. The presence of contaminants in the atmosphere is considered to be in sufficient quantities and duration, to cause them to be injurious to human health, animal and plant life and reduce welfare in general.”

There are two main causes of air pollution, i.e. Man-made Cause and Natural Causes.

Man-made Causes:

a) There are several factors affecting air pollution, such as we have chemical factories, refineries of petrol, industries of textile, paper and pulp, etc. Besides, the industries as small as that of the brick making as well as foundries also play a huge role in causing air pollution.

b) Several pesticides are spread on the fields. This spraying of pesticides increases the level of chemicals in our atmosphere and causes pollution in the atmosphere.

c) Increase in the number of vehicles on the road is yet another major cause of air pollution, particularly in the big cities. There are other major causes, such as old, worn out vehicles running on the road, long-minute traffic congestion, uneven roads and improper traffic management authority.

d) Those people who in slums or small towns do not have properly ventilated homes and when they use such methods of cooking as wood and coal in their household stoves – they further contribute in causing air pollution. And this happens in the underdeveloped nations. We shouldn’t have smoky indoor air for an obvious reason that it would affect the health of both small children and adults.

e) The power stations are mainly run on petroleum or coal so that they can generate power and heat which in turn emanates sulphur dioxide (SO2) along with smoke. As per the studies, the thermal power stations release nearly 2/3 rd of the total SO2 released in the atmosphere. These gases are really toxic for our atmosphere and causes air pollution.

f) As a matter of fact, mining activities is also one of the major factors causing air pollution because the underground activities such as these generate a lot of dust. During mining, dust gets released from stockpiles, blasting excavation, transportation of ore, crushing, etc. The situation is further aggravated when wind blows and it takes away the dirt from one place to the other.

Natural Causes:

Just like man-made causes, there are natural causes of air pollution too, such as dust storms, forest fires, volcanic eruptions, spores of fungus, flowers’ pollen grains, etc.

However, we can control air pollution through various means, such as Plantation, i.e. by planting more and more trees and secondly by using compressed natural gas (CNG) and unleaded petrol. We can also look for some alternate energy sources which are environment friendly or causes little harm.

Hello Friends – Welcome to yet another speech giving assembly!

Hope you all are doing well! As we know that the topic which needs to be addressed today is Air Pollution and I want the participation of each one of you because everyone, including me is responsible for causing air pollution.

We do not live and breathe in a pure environment – the air is polluted, water is contaminated, food is polluted and what not! And unfortunately more than the natural factors, it’s the human agency which is primarily responsible for causing air pollution. The air that we breathe has become so toxic these days that half of the illnesses caused to us is primarily due to the polluted environment.

The human agencies responsible for causing air pollution can be divided into various categories, but those chiefly responsible are those caused by the automobiles and the industries.

Automobiles are a serious threat to our environment and in the last decade the pollution caused due to these vehicles has increased manifold in the Metropolitan cities, such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad. The exhausts that are emitted from the vehicles are particulate matter, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and unburnt hydrocarbons, including a few carcinogenic organic compounds, such as polyaromatic hydrocarbons and benzene – which cause a serious impact on our health.

The government should encourage the use of public transport and there should be a separate lane for the bicycles to ply. People should be urged to walk a few kilometers rather than riding a personal vehicle. These small, small measures can cause a significant change in the quality of air.

But did you know that there are certain other conditions affecting the emission of gases from the vehicles and lead to more air pollution. These are lack of maintenance of these vehicles, when they are old and obsolete, due to cramped roads and also because of poor management system.

The pollution is increasing not only because of the increasing number of vehicles on the road, but also due to the reasons mentioned above. It is therefore required of us to ensure the maintenance and inspection of these vehicles from time to time in order to keep a check on the emission rate when the vehicle is out on the road. There are certain testing centers, such as AETCs, i.e. The Auto Emission Testing Centers that play a significant role in keeping a check on the emission rate of the in-use automobiles.

Industrial pollution is yet another major source of air pollution. Industrial pollution not only causes water pollution, but also deteriorates the quality of air. It is because of the huge expansion of the industries and machines replacing the manual labour that the quality of air has become even worse.

Immediate steps need to be taken to combat the situation of rising air pollution otherwise a time will come when we will not even be able to breathe and no life would be imaginable on this planet. So let’s save our Mother Earth and prevent the air from becoming further toxic.

I hope, through my speech, I could stir the sentiments of a lot of people and make them realize as to where we are going wrong.

Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen – It’s good to see you all for this national conference.

However, before we begin this conference, I would like to take a few minutes of yours and address a very important issue which is in fact a point of discussion today, i.e. Air Pollution. Air pollution is no longer a problem of our country, but has rather become a global phenomenon and we human beings are majorly responsible for this disaster.

Please let me be very honest and say that we are the most selfish race on this earth as we only think of ourselves and work towards making our lives comfortable. We have constructed these big factories to manufacture products and also vehicles in order to travel faster from one place to the other. Technology is really a boon for us and they have made our lives comfortable; however the cost that we have paid in return is really massive.

Ladies and Gentlemen, air is the most abundant natural resource available to us and we are not able to assess its worth so much so that we pollute this very air which we breathe. This is the reason why air pollution has become a huge concern these days. Government and environmentalists are trying their best to bring down the level of air pollution, but this is not an overnight change as it’ll require both time and efforts on their part to bring about a change in society and make people adopt a pristine lifestyle which our ancestors lived.

Other than emission from the vehicles, there are several other man-made activities that heavily contribute towards air pollution and global warming, such as Deforestation, Mining, Agriculture, power plant which we run on fossil fuel, etc. In fact, smoking also significantly contributes towards causing air pollution. Don’t be surprised? A smoker is responsible for adding nearly 40 carcinogens to the environment using only one smoke. Even though it’s a micro level pollutant yet its harmful effects are no way less than the macro level pollutants.

It’s an alarming time now as air pollution has become one of the chief reasons behind the declining health status of the people. Right from causing respiratory problems such as COPD, i.e. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder to bronchitis, cancer, heart ailments, skin cancer, allergy, asthma, etc pollution has caused a great havoc in the lives of the people.

Cough, cold and pneumonia are some of the diseases which almost every other man suffers with, your next door. Isn’t it? Pollution is also slowly and gradually destroying our immune system so much so that we have become prone to various other health problems.

The time is demanding and we must adopt some concrete measures in order to check air pollution and improving life on earth. With this I rest my speech!

I – Sakshi Tanwar from Class-XII (B) – welcome everyone to our school auditorium. As you know that today we are celebrating the World Environment Day by planting more trees and putting up banners around our school in order to spread the awareness about how important it is for us to protect our nature and save the environment from the rising pollution.

However, as I stand today in front of you, I wish to deliver a brief Speech on Air Pollution. The issue of air pollution has become a global concern now as it has reached an alarming stage and this is not a good news particularly for those suffering from certain respiratory conditions, such as asthma or those who are above 65 years of age.

Other than anthropogenic (man-made) activities which are responsible for causing air pollution; the season of summer has also a major role to play. Ozone as we all know poses a serious issue to our health, especially those who are heart patients or are suffering from respiratory diseases such as COPD and asthma.

Air pollution can exacerbate the problem of asthma or even can aid in its development in people who aren’t suffering from it. Isn’t that worse? Ozone acts as an irritant which can further impact the functioning of the lungs of those who are already suffering from certain respiratory conditions. One more important fact to note that the particulate matter and Nitrates which are a byproduct of combustion engines, found particularly in trucks and buses can cause severe asthma attacks.

The quality of air is deteriorating day by day and more so because we are chopping off trees which release oxygen in the atmosphere. We are not just cutting these trees, but effacing from the earth a vital source of life on earth. Deforestation is happening for many reasons such as for commercialization, urbanization or industrialization – reason could be many, but we are causing a serious harm to our environment and are also putting our lives in danger.

On the top of it, when our farmers burn the waste crop, they also contribute a lot to the rising air pollution by releasing harmful gases to the environment. Likewise, we also have the cases of unlawful burning of garbage.

A warm welcome to one & all present here. Today we are here to discuss the very burning topic of the decade that is pollution. According to a report by the World Health Organization, eleven out of twelve cities with the highest levels of particulate pollution are located in India. A study says 86% of the Indian water bodies are deemed critically polluted. Land pollution has resulted in a loss of around 25 billion tons of valuable soil each year.

As per the Global Burden of Disease Report by the World Health Organization, the prevalence of hearing loss was estimated to be 6.3% in India due to noise pollution. These are the few reports which have become often in today’s media & still we are not serious about the problem. Air Pollution in India has become a severe problem. As per a study, at least 140 million people in India breathe air that is ten times over the safe limit.

57% of the total air pollution are by the industries, 27% by vehicles, 17% by crop burning & around 5% by Diwali fireworks. India, as a country, is the third-largest greenhouse gas producer after China and the United States. There is a decrease in the Air Quality Index of all the major cities of the country. All these have resulted in an increase in several airborne diseases & the premature deaths in India.

Now the second type of pollution which has impacted is water pollution. The largest source of water pollution is untreated sewage. Other factors include agricultural runoff & unregulated small scale industries, solid wastes etc. These factors have resulted in contamination of both surface water & groundwater. Lack of toilets & defecation is also adding to the cause. Many rivers water has been declared unfit for domestic use due to high pollution with organic matter.

Not only humans but also the life in water is getting adversely affected by this.Now let us briefly discuss the land degradation. Soil Contamination or land pollution is caused by xenobiotic chemicals or other alteration in the natural soil. It is due to the intensive farming, deforestation, improper disposal of wastes & industrial activities. Except for these few major pollution’s, there are several other types of pollution’s like noise pollution, light pollution, plastic pollution which has been ignored since long.

Pollution cannot be seen or felt, but its effects are evident on the earth & the biodiversity. Global warming, increase in sea level, extinction of species, scarcity of drinking water, decrease in air quality, acid rain etc. are few major impacts which are posing a threat to the existence of human life on earth. Loud sounds around us all the time, like honking cars, loudspeakers, and construction work, are all sources of noise pollution.

Firstly, let’s understand what noise pollution is. It’s when the noise in our environment becomes too loud, disturbing and harmful. Imagine trying to study or sleep and a loud sound interrupts you. That’s noise pollution. It’s harmful just like dirty air or water, but it’s harder to see because it’s not something we can touch or see.

Now, let’s talk about where noise pollution comes from. Our everyday activities are a big source. The loud noise from traffic on busy roads, the sounds of construction work in our cities, the loud music from our radios and televisions, and even the constant noise from our household appliances – all these add to noise pollution.

You might be thinking, why is noise pollution a problem? Well, it harms us in many ways. It can make it hard for us to focus on our work or studies. It can cause stress and headaches. Over time, too much noise can even lead to hearing loss. But it’s not just us humans who are affected. Noise pollution also disturbs animals, especially birds and sea creatures who rely on sound for navigation and communication.

So, what can we do about noise pollution? There are many simple steps we can take. We can choose to use quieter machines and appliances. We can limit the use of loudspeakers. We can encourage the people around us to be quieter and more mindful of the noise they make. And most importantly, we must follow the rules on noise set by our local laws and regulations.

Lastly, I want to say that it’s not just up to us as individuals to fight noise pollution. We need our schools, our local communities, and our government to help. Schools can teach about the harm of noise pollution and how to prevent it. Communities can organize events that celebrate silence and peacefulness. Our government can make and enforce laws that limit noise pollution.

In conclusion, noise pollution might be invisible, but it is very real. It harms us and the world around us. But the good news is, each one of us can do something about it. If we all work together, we can reduce noise pollution and make our world a quieter and healthier place.

2 Minute Speech On Pollution In English

Good morning to everyone in this room. I would like to thank the principal, the teachers, and my dear friends for allowing me to speak to you today about pollution. One of the biggest problems the world is now dealing with is pollution. The degradation of the quality of the air, water, and soil is caused by the introduction of dangerous contaminants into the ecosystem.

As human civilization developed, humans created tools and things to make life easier. We began to abuse nature and pollute it throughout this process. The melting of Antarctic glaciers as a result of global warming is a problem we are currently experiencing.

In addition to harming the environment, pollution also spreads illnesses that have the potential to eradicate all living things. Water quality has decreased and aquatic life has been wiped off by toxic substances dumped into the environment. Asthma and other lung conditions are brought on by the emission of toxic gasses into the atmosphere.

More and more laws are being established to reduce pollution, and governments all around the world have embraced them. However, simply laws and regulations cannot aid in pollution control since each individual has a responsibility to take independent action to reduce pollution. Additionally, it is important that young children learn about pollution and how it affects both the environment and their future.

To sum up my speech, I would like to emphasize that all forms of pollution harm the environment, animals, and people. People must bring important decisions for a brighter future. Since pollution puts many innocent lives in danger, we should take part in efforts to combat and manage this issue. As a team, we can reduce pollution. Thank you.

2024 'state of the air' report reveals most 'hazardous' air quality days in 25 years.

American Lung Association's 25 th annual report finds that 131 million people in the U.S. are exposed to unhealthy levels of air pollution

CHICAGO , April 24, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Lung Association's new "State of the Air" report reveals that spikes in deadly particle pollution are the most severe they've been in the history of the report. According to the new report, people in the U.S. experienced the most days with "very unhealthy" and "hazardous" air quality due to particle pollution in 25 years. In total, the report finds that 131 million people (39%) are living in areas with unhealthy levels of air pollution.

The Lung Association's 25 th annual "State of the Air" report grades exposure to unhealthy levels of ground-level ozone air pollution (also known as smog) and short-term spikes and annual average of particle pollution (also known as soot) over a three-year period. This year's report includes the most recent quality-assured air quality data from 2020-2022 and is updated to reflect the new annual particle pollution standard that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized in February 2024 .

"We have seen impressive progress in cleaning up air pollution over the last 25 years, thanks in large part to the Clean Air Act. However, when we started this report, our team never imagined that 25 years in the future, more than 130 million people would still be breathing unhealthy air," said Harold Wimmer , President and CEO of the American Lung Association. "Climate change is causing more dangerous air pollution. Every day that there are unhealthy levels of ozone or particle pollution means that someone – a child, grandparent, uncle or mother – struggles to breathe. We must do more to ensure everyone has clean air."

The report found that nearly 4 in 10 people live in an area that received a failing grade for at least one measure of air pollution. 43.9 million people live in areas with failing grades for all three measures. People of color are disproportionately exposed to unhealthy air and are also more likely to be living with one or more chronic conditions that make them especially vulnerable to air pollution, including asthma, diabetes and heart disease. The report found that a person of color in the U.S. is 2.3 times more likely than a white individual to live in a community with a failing grade on all three air pollution measures.

Particle Pollution Fine particulate matter air pollution, also known as PM 2.5 , particle pollution or soot, can be deadly. These particles come from wildfires, wood-burning stoves, coal-fired power plants, diesel engines and other sources. These microscopic particles can trigger asthma attacks, heart attacks and strokes, and cause lung cancer.

The report has two grades for particle pollution: one for "short-term" particle pollution, or daily spikes, and one for the annual average "year-round" level that represents the concentration of particles in each location.

Short-Term Particle Pollution Spikes in particle pollution continue to impact communities in many parts of the country. The report finds that 65 million people lived in counties that experienced unhealthy spikes in particle pollution, the highest number reported in 14 years. In the three years covered by this report, individuals in the U.S. experienced the highest number of days when particle pollution reached "very unhealthy" and "hazardous" levels in the 25 years of reporting the "State of the Air."

Short term particle pollution spikes are a clear example of the impacts that climate change is having on health. Changing weather patterns are driving more frequent and severe wildfires, which are delivering dangerous levels of particle pollution to more communities.

Year-Round Particle Pollution More than 90.7 million people live in one of the 119 counties where year-round particle pollution levels are worse than the new national air quality limit. This is the largest number in the report's history. It is an increase of 71.9 million compared to last year's report. This increase is partly due to EPA's new, stricter National Ambient Air Quality Standard for the annual measure of fine particulate matter, finalized in February. The standard now better reflects the science on health harm and shows that millions of people are living in areas that have unhealthy levels of annual particle pollution.

Ozone Pollution Ground-level ozone pollution is a powerful respiratory irritant whose effects have been likened to a sunburn of the lungs. Inhaling ozone can cause shortness of breath, trigger coughing and asthma attacks and may shorten life. Warmer temperatures driven by climate change make ozone more likely to form and harder to clean up.

Although there were exceptions, ozone pollution has generally improved across the nation. 2.4 million fewer people lived in areas with unhealthy ozone pollution compared to last year's report, but more than 100 million people (nearly 30%) still live with unhealthy ozone pollution. The "State of the Air" report has seen a dramatic improvement in ozone pollution over the last 25 years. The first "State of the Air," released in May 2000 , reported that 72% of people in the U.S. who lived in counties with ozone monitors had unhealthy levels of ozone pollution.

Cleanest Cities The report also recognizes the nation's cleanest cities. To make the cleanest list for all three measures, a city must experience no high ozone or particle pollution days and rank among the 25 cities with the lowest year-round particle pollution levels.

The 2024 "State of the Air" reports on air quality during the three years (2020-2022) of the COVID-19 pandemic. While many people speculated that the changes in behaviors during the pandemic, such as working from home, would result in improved air quality, this report shows that poor air quality continued to impact millions of people during those years. Notably, freight and goods movement on heavy-duty trucks, by rail and at ports increased significantly in some regions, adding to increased pollution burdens. In addition, wildfire smoke presented a major and increasing threat to lung health during these years.

EPA recently finalized new air pollution rules that will help clean up particle pollution and address climate change, such as the updated particle pollution standards, a rule to place stricter limits on tailpipe emissions from new cars and a rule to clean up truck pollution. Now, the Lung Association is urging EPA to set long-overdue stronger national limits on ozone pollution. Stronger limits would help people protect themselves and drive cleanup of polluting sources across the country.

Pollution is of many types as you all know and some pollutants are quite common that we take part in our daily works but we don't even think about it.

Air pollution is perhaps the most harmful type of pollution. It is caused by the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, gasoline, and diesel. This releases pollutants such as carbon dioxide and other gasses into the atmosphere. These pollutants may lead to the development of respiratory diseases and cognitive illnesses. Particulate matter pollution is a growing concern in many cities since it causes severe damage to the lining of the respiratory tract.

Land pollution is caused by the disposal of waste products on land. This can include garbage, chemicals, and other materials that can contaminate the soil. It can also lead to the destruction of natural habitats, which can drastically reduce biodiversity. Soil pollution leads to the loss of minerals from the soil and an increase in toxic elements such as chromium, cadmium, zinc, arsenic, etc.

Water pollution is caused by the release of chemicals and other pollutants in water sources. This can include things like sewage, fertilizers, and other industrial waste. It can also lead to the destruction of aquatic life and the contamination of drinking water

This not only affects the water quality and its ability to support life, but can also contaminate the soil and affect crops. In addition, toxic chemicals can enter the food chain and harm animals and humans who consume contaminated fish and other seafood.

Soil Pollution | Soil pollution is another form of environmental degradation that can have significant impacts on the health of our planet. This can occur through the use of toxic chemicals in agriculture and industry, as well as through the improper disposal of waste. Soil pollution can lead to reduced crop yields and soil fertility, as well as cause harm to wildlife and contribute to groundwater contamination.

What Can We Do | In order to reduce the effects of pollution, it is necessary for individuals, businesses, and governments to take action. This can include reducing the use of harmful chemicals, improving waste management practices, and promoting the use of renewable energy sources. In addition, individuals can reduce their own carbon footprint by conserving energy, reducing waste, and using public transportation.

In conclusion, pollution is a serious issue that affects the health of our planet and its inhabitants. It is important for all of us to take action to reduce its impacts and protect the environment for future generations. Whether it is through reducing our own carbon footprint or advocating for changes in policy, every individual has a role to play in the fight against pollution.

Flint Water Crisis

A real-life incident of pollution occurred in Flint, Michigan in 2014, when the city switched its water source from Lake Huron to the Flint River. The river water was not properly treated and as a result, lead contamination was found in the city's drinking water. On Wednesday, Parliament is expected to adopt the provisional political agreement with EU countries on new measures to improve air quality in the EU so it is no longer harmful to human health, natural ecosystems and biodiversity.

Air pollution continues to be the number one environmental cause of early death in the EU, with around 300 000 premature deaths per year (check here to see how clean the air is in European cities) . In October 2022, the Commission proposed a revision of the EU air quality rules with more ambitious targets for 2030 and to achieve the zero pollution vision by 2050, in line with the Zero Pollution Action Plan .

Air Pollution exacerbates Sleep Apnea risk and severity, finds new study

For people living in areas with high pollution levels, the study suggests prioritising strategies to reduce their exposure indoors, such as using air purifiers. If you suspect you might have sleep apnea, regardless of where you live, talking to your doctor is crucial for diagnosis and treatment.

The research, published in the International Neurotoxicology Association journal, looked at data from twelve different studies to understand the link. While the evidence isn't conclusive yet, the researchers found a reason to believe that air pollutants, particularly nitrogen dioxide (NO2), might be contributing to a higher risk and severity of OSA.

NO2 is a common gas pollutant produced by traffic fumes and the burning of fossil fuels. The study suggests that exposure to NO2 could worsen existing sleep apnea or even increase the chances of developing it altogether.

The researchers haven't pinpointed the exact mechanism behind this link, but they propose a few possibilities. Air pollution can irritate and inflame the upper airway, making it more likely to collapse during sleep, a hallmark of OSA. Additionally, pollutants might disrupt the nervous system's control of breathing.

"These pathophysiological changes are known to contribute to the development and exacerbation of respiratory disorders. In the context of OSA, air pollution may aggravate upper airway inflammation and dysfunction, thereby increasing the propensity for airway collapse during sleep," the study reads. "It is important to note that effects of air pollutants may vary based on the type of pollutant, duration of exposure, and individual susceptibility factors, including age, gender, and underlying health conditions," it adds.

This study adds to a growing body of research suggesting that air pollution can have a wider impact on our health than previously thought. More work is needed to confirm the link between pollution and OSA, but these findings highlight the potential dangers of breathing dirty air.

Modi on Sunday hit out at Congress by criticising its manifesto promising distribution of properties.
