Tic-Tac-Toe Spelling Homework (freebie)
A couple weeks ago I posted about the homework I do with my 2nd graders . One thing that I send home each week is spelling practice. The page is set up with a space for the students to write down their 10 spelling words for the week and then there's a 3X3 grid with different activities. Students are expected to choose 3 to do during the week. I send this home on Monday so they can do a little each night or (because there isn't regular homework on Thursday) they can do it all on Thursday nights. (I used to send home 1/2 sheet homework on Thursdays too, but the feedback I got from parents is that it was too much to hassle with all at once. I haven't noticed a problem since scaling it back so that's what I continue to do.)
There are 6 different sheets that I cycle throughout the year. If you notice at the top of the page it says "Spelling Homework Week." I just write the week's number in there. So students see the first form on weeks 1, 7, 13, 19, 25, and 31. The second form shows up on weeks 2, 8, 14, 20, 26, and 32. And so on. For the 2nd graders at our school it seems like a good mix of predictability (so they know what to do) and novelty (so they don't get bored).
Each page has 9 different spelling activities. It was kind of a trick to come up with 54 ways for students to easily practice their words without repeating activities or using the same ideas from the spelling practice in the Morning Work Book! I also didn't want anything too crazy. Imagine the friction of kids begging to write their words with shaving cream and parents not wanting that to happen at all! The most adventurous it gets is to use bleach and a Q-tip to write spelling words on construction paper. But that is on only one page–and I put it in a corner square so the homework could easily be completed by bypassing that activity (but I did have one little guy last year who was excited to do it everytime it came up!).
The center square on each page is always a low-key activity that kids can typically do independently. I try to limit the necessity of parental involvment because a good chunk of my kids have parents who will never look at any of their homework. It's expected for parents to initial each activity, but for some kids I allow them to mark it themselves (or if they're not always trustworthy) I ask them to bring the papers they practiced on back to school. Even then there's usually 3 who never bring it back. Those kids spend Friday morning recess writing their words three times. They're usually done in less than 5 minutes. I don't want to penalize them too much because in 2nd grade a parent really should be helping out!
If you're familiar with this blog you know that I use Words Their Way. But I don't use those words for homework. You can read more about the spelling I do for homework on this post .
Also, the research on the traditional method of weekly spelling lists–test on Friday–new list Monday shows that it doesn't do much to improve spelling accuracy (hence I use Words Their Way). But parents expect spelling words and tests. It's something they're comfortable helping their child with. Plus, I figure, practicing extra words is never a bad thing.
You can download the 6 Spelling Tic-Tac-Toe pages at our Teachers Pay Teacher shop. Happy spelling!

Many curricula today do not offer children a chance to learn the facts in order, or in a constructive way. We have built Math worksheets that let your students practice the equations three times each, and phonics worksheets that have your children copy the spelling of the words three times.
You can supplement your own lesson plans for second grade with worksheets, flash cards, and videos.

1. second grade math worksheets.
When I teach addition, I like to teach subtraction at the same time. Our addition and subtraction worksheets make this super easy.
The children realize that the same three numbers are involved and they make the association between the tables better.
Of course, multiplication and division are the same way.
Second Grade is a great time for children to learn the 2s, 5s, and 10s of multiplication and many are very able to learn all twelve tables.
Using or counting money includes the 5s and 10s so this is a great time to make that association, too.

3. Second Grade Spelling
Offer your students plenty of review time. Simply repeating the spelling, even saying the spellings out loud will help them remember the spellings.
Taking the time to write the words is even more helpful.
Teaching them to say it while they write is best. This also helps them learn to read better.
If you are tutoring or homeschooling you can judge the individual amount of time that it takes your students to learn these words because some children learn them easily in one lesson others take much longer.
These next two free printables have many pages of second grade spelling words. These second grade words are above the first sounds . The verbs offer several of the verb forms for spelling rule practice.
The first download has the five pages of spelling words only and is handy to print on card stock to keep in a binder.
The second set has 92 including the above reference list of five pages and the second grade spelling worksheets.

2nd Grade Spelling Tasks Pack
FREE SPELLING CURRICULUM ANYONE? Not only are the printable Spelling Tasks Packs free, but they are practical and effective. The 2nd Grade Spelling Tasks Pack lays out a general weekly schedule for you and your child to follow. It can be used with any spelling list; however, it is meant to be used with the free printable spelling lists from K12 . The daily tasks will prepare your child for the expectations facing them in 3rd grade and beyond. Your student will have repetition in sight words, learn common phonetic patterns, and develop writing skills through sentence building. For us, the 2nd Grade Spelling Tasks Pack provides our family with a consistent and practical spelling curriculum.
As a Christian Book and Amazon affiliate, we may earn commissions from qualifying purchases. Thank you for your support. As always, we only recommend items that we truly feel will benefit your homeschooling experience. We appreciate it.
What are the 2nd Grade Spelling Tasks
Are you curious to see the 2nd grade tasks? If your student used the 1st Grade Spelling Tasks Pack last year, then they will easily transition into this year’s tasks. There are a few changes to this year’s spelling system. The first being the number of words. In 2nd grade, the word list jumps up to 16 words. We also learn how to put words in alphabetical order. For us, we also begin a form of testing. With no further ado, take a look at the 2nd grade spelling tasks.
Monday : Write Spelling Words 3x
Tuesday : Word Scrambler
Wednesday : Sentences
Thursday : Alphabetical Order
Friday : Test
Set up your 2nd Grade Spelling Notebook
2nd grade spelling notebook cover sheet.
To set up your Spelling Notebook, buy a 3-ring binder that has the clear front to display the cover sheet. If your kids are like mine, they will appreciate the cover page.
Weekly 2nd Grade Spelling Tasks Sheet
Now, this is how we arrange the inside of the Spelling Notebook. First, goes the Weekly Spelling Tasks sheet, which lays out the daily activities. For those of you who do not follow a typical Mon-Fri schedule, you may prefer the Weekly Spelling Tasks sheet that does not specify days, but tasks.
2nd Grade Master Spelling List
Next, put in the 2nd Grade Master Spelling list that can be printed out from the K12 website. I do appreciate the word selection presented by K12. There are 36 weeks of 16 words a week. Some of the words are sight words, word family sets, and or special phonetic sounds. These spelling lists coincide seamlessly with our learning goals!
Tip: We keep whatever word list we are working on in the front cover of the notebook. This is convenient. At this age, since the student is still learning to write correctly, you might consider writing the words in larger print on a separate sheet of paper and keeping it handy in the pocket of the folder also.
1st Task: Write Words 3x Each
The first task goes in next: Write the words 3x’s each sheet. Writing the words three times each is excellent writing practice. For me, this activity is more about writing the letters correctly than the actual memorization of spelling words.
Tip: If my student is struggling with forming the letters correctly or neatly, it can help to write the word on the 1st line to give them a clear example of how to write the letters appropriately. Just a thought.
2nd Task: Word Scrambler
The next spelling task is the Word Scrambler. Your child may or may not be accustomed to how word scramblers work. As their teacher, you will scramble your child’s spelling words in the left-hand column of the table. For example, for the word, “checked,” you may write the letters, “kcechde.” Your child will use the scrambled letters and their spelling list to determine what spelling word is scrambled. To be clear, the words are not written in order. He or she will then write the spelling word in the right hand column. Easy!
3rd Task: Spelling Sentences
The third spelling task is to write sentences using the spelling words. Walk your child through this process until they feel comfortable tackling this task independently. Try to correct words or grammar errors while they write their sentences as opposed to correcting it at the end. Work together during this task. Ask your child, “How could you use, ‘checked’ in a sentence?” If your child is stuck, then give them an example sentence, but encourage them to come up with their own sentence afterwards. This is a great time to identify words that they do not know the meaning of. Hence, a vocabulary lesson may be in order.
It is during this year that my child is encouraged to write sentences that have more than 4 words. Writing complete sentences with correct capitalization and punctuation may take longer for some students to grasp. Oftentimes, I ask my student to tell me verbally what their sentence is and then I write it on a separate paper for them to copy.
Sometimes my child will create sentences that use two of the spelling words. If the words are used correctly, I let them use the one sentence to represent both words. Consequently, creating more detailed sentences can become a game to them.
4th Task: Alphabetical Order
The Alphabetical Order sheet will go in your notebook next. This is a new skill for most 2nd graders. It will take a few weeks for your child to master putting their spelling words in alphabetical order. Walk them through the process.
To help them find the first word in alphabetical order, use the alphabet on the side of the sheet to direct your child. While pointing at the letter ‘A,’ ask your child, “Do any of the words start with ‘a’?” If not, then cross the A out on the ABC line and go to the letter ‘B.’ If two words start with the same letter, instruct your child to look at the second letter in the word. For instance, look at the words, big and bat. The second letter in big is ‘i,’ while the second letter in bat is ‘a.’ ‘A’ comes first in the alphabet, so bat would precede big in alphabetical order.
5th Task: Spelling Test/Assessment
Lastly, the test or word scrambler assessment will go into the notebook. This is the last sheet of the weekly tasks. There are two styles of assessment included for you to choose from. The first assessment is a traditional spelling test. In this method, the teacher calls out the word and the student will write the word on the paper.
The second assessment option is what I like to call, “Word Scrambler Style.” This option affords the student all the letters needed to spell the word without looking at the word. This may be more appropriate for those students who need a little extra.
What happens if my student fails the test?
Whatever words my student misses, he is required to rewrite the word 3 times. If the grade is below a B, I ask that they write the misspelled words 5x each and retest the words they missed until they pass.
Supportive Spelling Games & Activities
Spelling games are encouraged throughout the week to help them learn their spelling words. Here are a couple of activities that we use to help my kids practice their words.
Spelling Training Online Games
One way to practice and study spelling words is to use the free games provided by Spelling Training . Go to the home page and insert your spelling list. Once you have saved your spelling list, your student can play a number of spelling games. This site made a huge difference in one of my son’s spelling success.
Homemade Homeschool: Matching Game
You can make a matching game using index cards in minutes. Cut 16 index cards in half, write each spelling word on two different cards so that in the end, you have 2 cards for each word. This should give you a total of 32 cards. Play a matching game with your student. Every time a card is turned over, the player is to say the word out loud. Fun & Frugal!
