Thugs Movie Review: Good craft elevates this prisonbreak thriller

Choreographer-director Brinda had mentioned in an interaction with us that she wanted her sophomore film Thugs to be as racy as a trailer. Having seen her film, I can say she has delivered exactly that with this remake of Swathanthryam Ardharathriyil (2018). Unlike the original which begins with the events that lead the protagonist into a prison, Thugs takes us into the prison right away and drops an engrossing slow-mo action scene set in the rain. There’s no time to breathe, and we are planted directly into the claustrophobic world of a prison. The film then goes on to reveal the back story using a non-linear narrative, and this helps pile on the suspense factor. Cast: Hridhu Haroon, Simha, RK Suresh, Munishkanth, Anaswara Rajan Director: Brinda

Despite largely being loyal to the original film, this remake can be said to be less complex. Some ideas from the original are knocked off here, including the lawyer character played by Lijo Jose Pellissery, the heroine getting trapped in an asylum, and the murder of an SI. This means that this film is entirely focused on the prison break. Thugs also spell out a few scenes, as opposed to the more subtle and ambiguous take in the original Malayalam film. Where a character, Sethu (Hridhu Haroon), stops short of escaping the prison at an earlier stage, in this film, he holds the rope, climbs it, and then, decides otherwise. The question then is, with cops monitoring him in close proximity, how does he get away with it? But these are minor inconveniences in a remake that retains the soul of the original.

The escape plan isn't exactly perfect or inventive. Sethu and the boys seem inspired by Andy Dufresne from The Shawshank Redemption and dig their way to freedom using a tool that’s smuggled into the cell. But unlike in the Frank Darabont film, where the plan of the protagonist is one of the greatest reveals of all time, here we travel along with the lead characters from the beginning and know what they are up to. Though new obstacles keep popping up, they get resolved by Sethu quite easily. When problems are beyond his capacity, the screenplay steps in to resolve things for him. For instance, Durai (Bobby) the biggest aid of Sethu, gets framed and is moved to the district jail, but in weeks, he returns, with a rather silly excuse masquerading as a twist.

The technical excellence in Thugs makes up for such convenient writing though. The loudness of Sam CS's background music might feel overdone, but they help lift the high moments. Praveen Antony’s editing manages to stop the film from feeling rushed and brings in some much-needed balance.

Though Thugs doesn't offer great scope for actors to flex their prowess, the invested performance of Hridhu keeps the film going with a committed performance as an astute prisoner; he is great with the action too. Bobby Simha delivers a restrained performance and is an asset too. Actors Munishkanth and RK Suresh shine too, as the naive yet wily inmate and a brutish jailor, respectively.

For a prison break film to be effective, it’s important that we empathise with the protagonist and root for him. Here though, he is a perpetrator and there’s no urgent reason why he should get out immediately. That his girlfriend is safe in the outside world only dilutes the urgency of his escape. Largely though, the remake—bereft of any writing credits—does justice to the original, even if you are not exactly cheering on the escaping prisoners.

தக்ஸ்: திரை விமர்சனம்

நாகர்கோவில் சிறைச்சாலையில் விசாரணைக் கைதியாக இருக்கும் துரையின் (பாபி சிம்ஹா) அறையில் அடைக்கப்படுகிறார் சேது (ஹிருது ஹாரூன்). அதே அறைக்கு வந்து சேரும் சில்லறைத் திருடர் மருதுவும் (முனீஸ்காந்த்) இன்னும் சில கைதிகளும் அங்கிருந்து தப்பிக்க, சேது முன்மொழியும் திட்டத்துக்கு ஒத்துழைக்கிறார்கள். அவர்கள் தப்பித்தார்களா, இல்லையா? அவர்கள் சிறைக்கு வந்து சேர்ந்த குற்றப் பின்னணி என்ன என்பது கதை.

1994இல் வெளிவந்த ‘ஷஷாங்க் ரிடெம்ஷன்’ ஹாலிவுட் படத்தின் தாக்கத்தில் உருவாகி 2018-இல் வெளிவந்த மலையாளப் படம் ‘ஸ்வாதந்தர்யம் அர்த்தராத்திரியில்’ (நள்ளிரவில் சுதந்திரம்). அதில், தமிழுக்காக சில மாற்றங்கள் செய்து மறுஆக்கம் செய்திருக்கிறார் இயக்குநர் பிருந்தா.

முதன்மைக் கதாபாத்திரங்கள் எதற்காகச் சிறைக்கு வந்து சேர்ந்தார்கள் என்கிற பின்னணி, தப்பிச் செல்வதற்காக செய்யும் ரகசிய வேலைகள் ஆகிய இரண்டையும் இணைகோடாக விவரித்துச் செல்கிறது படம். பாடல்கள் இருந்தாலும் அவை முட்டுக் கட்டையாக இல்லாமல், எந்த இடத்திலும் இடை நிற்காமல் பயணிக்கிறது உற்சாகமூட்டும் திரைக்கதை.

சிறைக் கண்காணிப்பாளர், காவலர்களின் நன்மதிப்பைப் பெறுவது, துரையின் விடுதலை வேட்கையைத் தூண்டிவிட்டு, தப்பிக்கும் திட்டத்துக்குள் அவரை இழுத்து வருவது, முக்கிய ஆளாக இருந்துதிட்டத்தைச் செயல்படுத்துவது என சேது கதாபாத்திரம் வலிமையாக எழுதப்பட்டுள்ளது. ஆனால், சிறையிலிருந்து தப்பிக்க வேண்டும் என்ற சேதுவுடைய துடிப்பின் பின்னால், விடலைக் காதல் காரணமாக இருப்பது சறுக்கல்.

வாய்ப் பேச முடியாத பெண்ணாகக் காட்டப்படும் நாயகியை வெறும் ‘காதல் பண்ட’மாகச் சித்தரித்திருப்பதும் ஏமாற்றம்.

பெரும்பகுதி கதை நிகழும் களமான மாவட்டச் சிறைசாலை எப்படியிருக்கும் என்பதை ஏற்றுகொள்ளும் விதமாக, ‘செட்’என்றே தெரியாத வண்ணம் அமைத்திருக்கிறார் ஜோசப் நெல்லிக்கல். சிறைச் சாலையின் வெளித்தோற்றம், அறைகள், கதவுகள், சமையற் கூடம் ஆகியவற்றில் பகல், இரவுப் பொழுதுகள் உருவாக்கும் ஒளியின் தடம் எப்படியிருக்கும் என்பதை ப்ரியேஷ் குருசாமியின் ஒளிப்பதிவு, த்ரில்லர் தன்மை விலகாமல் காட்டியிருக்கிறது.

திரைக்கதையின் வேகத்துக்கு ஈடுகொடுத்துள்ள மற்றொரு அம்சம் பிரவீன்அந்தோணியின் படத்தொகுப்பு. கிளைமாக்ஸ் காட்சியை எவ்வளவு ‘நறுக்’கென்று வெட்ட முடியுமோ, அதில்கூர்மையாகத் தன் பணியைச் செய்து அசத்தியிருக்கிறார். சாம் சி.எஸ்ஸின் பாடல்களும் பின்னணி இசையும் கதைக் களத்துடன் பின்னிப் பிணைந்துஉறவாடியிருப்பது பலம்.

சேதுவாக வரும் ஹிருதுஹாரூன் நடிப்பு, நடனம்,ஆக்‌ஷன் காட்சிகள் இரண்டிலும் அசத்தியிருக்கிறார். காதல் காட்சிகளில் நெருக்கம் இருக்கிற அளவுக்கு அவரிடம் உணர்ச்சி இல்லை. நடிகை அனஸ்வரா ராஜன் தோற்றம் வழி ஈர்த்தாலும் நடிக்க ஏதுமில்லாமல் கடந்து போகிறார். பாபி சிம்ஹா கொடுத்த பணியை நிறைவேற்றி இருக்கிறார். முனீஸ்காந்துக்கு ஆக்‌ஷனுடன் நகைச்சுவை செய்யும் கூடுதல் பணி. ஸ்கோர் செய்திருக்கிறார்.

சிறையிலிருந்து தப்பிக்கும் செயல் திட்டத்தில் அதிகமாகக் கவனம் வைத்தவர்கள்,கதாபாத்திரங்களின் பிரச்சினைகளை இன்னும் கவனமாகத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்திருந்தால், தட்டையான த்ரில்லர் அனுபவம் என்பதைத் தாண்டி, உணர்வுபூர்வமாகவும் ஈர்த்திருக்கும்.

THUGS MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE

Thugs (Kumari Mavattathin Thugs) is a crime action drama directed by Choreographer Brindha. Hridhu Haroon, Bobby Simha, RK Suresh, Munishkanth, and Anaswara Rajan play important characters in the film. The film is produced by Riya Shibu under the banner HR pictures in association with Jio Cinemas.

Hridhu Haroon is caught by police when he tries to run away with the money of his owner to Australia. He is put behind bars at Nagercoil Central Jail where he befriends Simha. They plan to break out of the jail with a few other inmates of the prison. The soul of the film lies in the plan and its execution to escape from the jail and Hridhu trying to prove his innocence over the crime of which he is accused.

Brindha manages to pull out performances that the script requires. Hridhu as a debutant is fittingly convincing of a guy who is a mixture of innocence and mastery. Bobby Simha gets to perform in a few scenes and is refreshing to see him underplaying a role backed by a strong script.  RK Suresh as a menacing cop is tailor-made for the role. Munishkanth provides comic relief while it is difficult for us to believe some of his efforts to proceed with the plan. For instance, stealing the map of the jail from the jailer's room is not convincingly portrayed. Anaswara Rajan and others act accordingly to the mood of the scene.

On the technical front, the film is safe in the hands of capable artists. Sam CS employs thumping music to elevate the tension of the film. The jailbreak sequence paralleled with a ritual is a treat to watch. Priyesh Gurusamy frames what is necessary for the film. At times we feel the needless camera movement on the screen. Trimming has been done from the original film to suit the Tamil audience.

Being a remake of a Malayalam film, Thug's stays true to its genre. Not many films explore the concept of jailbreak as it is one among those claustrophobic settings which are difficult to pull off. This film has done justice to its content by not deviating from its plan to make a realistic thriller. Measured performances hold the script while the conflicts progress the narrative. Certain action sequences stand out in terms of their choreography.

Realism felt in the script is diluted by the plethora of punches and kicks delivered throughout the film. Almost every scene has this over-the-top punching scene backed by a dialogue that supports the action. The camaraderie between the characters is not expressed in a way that makes the audience involve themselves emotionally with the narrative. Just for a few dialogues that stand out, the rest are mediocre in their notion.

Overall the film is engaging with a racy screenplay that doesn't stop for any usual gimmicks to hook the audience. The film is crafted well but is loosely packed in its translation. A film that depicts the basic human instinct to break free from his shackles is less expressed than its original vigor. Though with its flaws, the film engages you throughout its runtime.

In her latest film Thugs , director Brinda tells a grim, intense story about a bunch of prisoners looking to break out of a heavily-guarded prison.

The story is set in Nagercoil in south Tamil Nadu where a young boy Sethu (Hridhu Haroon) gets sentenced to life imprisonment for trying to loot ₹1.75 crore from his boss Annachi (PL Thenappan).

Annachi is no angel and Sethu, who works as Annachi’s accountant, has his reasons for indulging in the crime.

One part of the story deals with the circumstances that made Sethu a convict, while another part deals with how Sethu, along with a group of other inmates inside the prison, plans to escape from the high-security facility.

What works and what doesn’t?

To Brinda’s credit, certain parts of Thugs are exceptionally well-made. However, there are those other parts that drag the intensity down and make it a monotonous, illogical and dull affair.

The portions where actors Bobby Simha and Munishkanth appear are the highlights.

On the technical front, Sam CS delivers a brilliant background score to make Thugs stand out.

His music, along with Priyesh Gurusamy’s spectacular visuals, play a big part in raising the stature of Brindha’s film.

Coming to lapses, Thugs has quite a few of them and they are pretty evident.

Take, for instance, the sequence where the convicts are shown digging a tunnel. It does not require a genius to know that the biggest challenge facing those looking to dig a tunnel in a prison is disposing of the debris!

Films in the same genre made until now have shown how prisoners find ingenious ways to get rid of the soil they displace. However, the director makes no effort to address this crucial issue!

Also, the tunnel, created in a short span, seems to have enough space for more than one individual to comfortably crawl through. There is so much space that there is even a fight sequence inside the tunnel!

Charming performances

Hridhu Haroon, who makes his debut as an actor, does a reasonably good job as Sethu. He scores handsomely in fights and romantic sequences.

But he looks too relaxed and settled in sequences that demand a bit of anxiety and restlessness to be showcased. Also, the actor can dance like a dream.

Sadly though, his dance number is screened as the end credits song.

Anaswara Rajan, who plays a speech-impaired person, makes quite an impact as the girl who wins the heart of Sethu. Blessed with expressive eyes, she exudes charm and grace all through the movie, making her a delight to watch.

National Award winner Bobby Simha delivers a commanding performance as Durai, a convict serving a life term with dignity and conscience.

Munishkanth, who plays convict Marudhu, does a neat job as well. His jokes provide the only relief in what otherwise is a grim tale.

RK Suresh impresses as Arockia Doss, the ruthless cop heading the prison facility. So does PL Thenappan who plays Annachi.

To sum up, Thugs may not be a sensational masterpiece but certainly does have its moments and is worth a watch!

Sethu and Kayal were in love, and when he was on his way to take the next big step in his life with her, he was arrested in a murder case. He was sent to Nagercoil prison. He earns the enmity of the jailer and the friendship of a couple of inmates. Meanwhile, a person is waiting for him. What was his escape plan with his inmates? Are those inmates trustworthy? The rest of the film deals with all these.

Star Performance

Hridhu fits well in character. His body language and performances are excellent, and instantly, he wins the audience’s hearts. Bobby Simha is decent in the role given, and RK Suresh is menacing. Munishkanth Ramdoss is good in the assigned role, and his dialogues are smile-worthy.

The film is inspired by Swathanthryam Ardharathriyil, a Malayalam film. Brinda impressed the audience with her excellent direction. Some of the climax portions are excellently made, and she filmed the scenes as a versatile director. None would believe that this is her second film. The screenplay is made at a quick pace. However, the first half of the film takes a lot of time to establish the story. The visuals are excellent, and Sam CS’ music is brilliant, and it elevates some intense sequences well. The film has decent production values, and it is technically fantastic.
