V Reading Paragraphs

A little rainbow of her own.

Vegetables come in a large variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. My neighbor, Vi, owns a vegetable farm. The farm belonged to her parents until they became too old to work on it. Vi started farming when she was seven. She didn't know how much she loved her vegetable farm until she tried something else. 

For a few years, she saved her money to become a vet. She liked animals and thought she would enjoy helping them. She volunteered at a veterinary clinic. During her visit, she observed mostly nice animals, but some were very mean. 

After this experience she was convinced that she wasn't brave enough to work as a veterinarian. Besides, she liked the privacy she had while working on the farm. Having and working on her own land gave her a strong sense of satisfaction. She believed that she was part of her environment and that was her driving force to grow the freshest vegetables in the valley.

Vi was positive that her vegetable farm was her own piece of heaven. She loved what she did and that was enough for her.

Vance's Vacation

Every summer Vance and his family went on vacation to Beaver Mountain. It only took them a few hours to travel there from their home in Vermont. They spent seven days hiking, playing volleyball, and driving all over the mountain in their van. Vance's family loved to explore different parts of the mountain as well as the small village on the South side.

Their family always went to the drive-in and watched a movie at least one night during their vacation. The village also had fun shops and stores with clever souvenirs that Vance bought each year to remember their vacation that summer. This year he bought a miniature volcano from the souvenir shop.

There was an old folktale about Beaver Mountain that was told by one of the village's oldest residents. The man's name was Mr. Dove. He was ninety-seven.

He told the story about how Beaver Mountain used to be an active volcano. He said hundreds of years ago Beaver Mountain was just a valley, until there was a big earthquake that caused the Mountain to form. The earthquake was so violent that it caused lava to come out of the top of the mountain.

"During that time there were rivers of lava," Mr. Dove said. Vance closed his eyes and tried to imagine what it would have been like to drive around all the lava during those days.

"We probably would have gone on vacation somewhere else," he said to his Mom, giggling.

Vance was glad there wasn't a river of lava all around Beaver Mountain. He loved visiting every summer and didn't want that to change.

Learning Violin

Learning to play the violin takes many years of lessons and practice. Vicki had just started playing and was at a beginner's level. On Valentine's Day, she had heard the most beautiful violin solo. She saw a couple having dinner by the river. They were staring into each other's eyes and she could tell they were in love.

When the man started playing the violin for the couple, something happened inside Vicki. She thought the violin sounded so beautiful that she wanted to learn how to play it. The trouble was, she really liked playing video games. Video games are much more fun to play than practicing the violin. Vicki didn't think about that when she asked her mom if she could take violin lessons.

At first, Vicki dove right in. She practiced five nights a week. She had visions of herself playing the violin for the governor or on a boat in Venice for a couple in love. However, as Vicki improved her skills, the music she played became more advanced. She would have to practice longer and think harder about the music she was playing. Playing video games was much easier than thinking hard about playing her violin every day.

One day, Vicki gave the violin to her mom.

"I don't want to play the violin anymore, it's too hard," she said. But Vicki's mom didn't want her quit. She knew playing the violin would be a valuable skill that Vicki could have for the rest of her life. Vicki's mom visited her during lunch at school the next day.

"If playing the violin was easy then everyone would do it," her mom said. "Remember the vision you had for yourself about playing the violin professionally?" she asked.

"Yes." said Vicki.

"I don't expect you to become a master violinist, unless you want to be. But there is a lot of value in knowing how to play an instrument and you will receive more of a personal victory by continuing and not quitting. Please don't stop," she said.

Vicki thought about it the rest of the day. That night when her mom was putting the vacuum away, Vicki told her she would not quit playing the violin. Her mom knew what she could achieve and was happy with Vicki's decision.

This list of functional words was professionally selected to be the most useful for a child or adult who has difficulty with producing the "V" sound.

We encourage you to use this list when practicing at home.

Doing home practice will help your child make much faster progress toward correct production.

Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) are only able to see students/clients 30-60 mins (or less) per week.

This is not enough time  for your child to overcome an articulation disorder with the "V" sound. But with high caseloads...

...it's all SLPs can do.

There's  only so much time  in the day.

Every day that your child goes without practice  it becomes more and more difficult  to correct an "V" error because he/she continues to say it incorrectly.

V Words Speech Therapy

As a speech therapist, I was always on the lookout for articulation lists that I could use in my speech therapy sessions. That’s why I’m on a mission to bring to you an articulation list of all our students’ speech sounds. 

Correct Production

Let’s review how to make the correct sound production of the v sound in the English language. 

• Teeth: The /v/ sound is made by placing your upper teeth on top of your bottom lip.
• Lip Position: Again the v sound is made by placing the lower lip under the top teeth.
• Voice: This sound is a voice sound. The sound is made from the vocal cords vibrating. 

You can tell that you’re vibrating your vocal folds by placing your hand on your larynx (where an adam apple is located) and feel for a vibration. This is the only difference between the v and f sound.

Years of Age

The v sound is a later developing sound. Children will master the v sound by the age of 5-6 years old according to the GFTA-2 Standardized sample. 

If you believe your child might have an articulation disorder then you’ll want to seek out a Speech Language Pathologist to see if your child would qualify for a speech therapy session and for the speech therapist to provide you with a therapy road map for your child.

Target Words

Word Positions: V Words Speech Therapy 

Initial position of words.

The initial position of the v sound is at the beginning of a word. For example, “vote” or “vent”.

Medial Position of Words

Some words have the v sound in the medial position of a word, such as “deliver”, “over”, and “adventure”.

Final Positions of Words

The final positions of words are when the target sound is at the end of a word. For example, “give” or “olive”.

Minimal Pairs

A great way to work on sound production is through minimal pairs .

A minimal pair is two words that differ by only one phoneme, in this case, the /v/ sound.

For example, “vase” and “face”.

When you pronounce these words side by side, it’s easy to hear the difference in the initial sound.

Having a list of initial v minimal pairs is a great way to work on correct production, especially for your students working on their phonological processes !

Phonological Process of Stopping

Do you have students who struggle to pronounce certain sounds by making substitutions? 

The stopping phonological process is when a child produces a stop consonant /p, b, t, d, k, or g/ in place of a fricative /f, v, th, s, z, sh, ch/ or an affricate sound /j/.

Some ways to practice include having your child or student say each v word one by one as they go through a list. 

Using a dot marker can also be a fun way to practice having your child put a dot under each v sound.

The next step after working at the word and phrase levels is to work on the v sound at the sentence level.

For example, you could give your child or student a list of sentences to read aloud while they work on their v sound.

V Words for Speech Therapy (Word Lists and Activities)

If you’re a speech-language pathologist looking for a quick list of initial and final v target words to practice during speech therapy, make sure to bookmark this post. You’ll also find some great ideas for making therapy more fun with a variety of engaging games , resources, and speech therapy activities for teaching the v sound. Not only does this blog post provide a list of initial, medial, and final v words, but it also suggests a variety of strategies for teaching correct placement.

Correct Production of V

Just like the f sound, the v sound is a labiodental fricative sound. The only difference, however, is that the v sound is voiced, meaning that the vocal cords, or vocal folds, vibrate. To produce the v sound, the top teeth need to rest against the bottom lip. When the top front teeth are placed on the lower lip, the air is directed through, and there is audible friction when this occurs. The result will be /v/ in isolation.

How To Teach the V Sound in Speech Therapy

Many of the same treatment approaches for the f sound can be used to elicit the v sound. The child will need to learn how to turn the “voice on” to produce a v.

A great way to provide is a tactile cue is to tap your bottom lip.

Try giving the v sound a “funny name” for young children. While the f sound could be termed “the bunny teeth sound”, the v sound could be the “vroom vroom” sound.

Try placing a mirror in front of your student. Have him bite on his lower lip, and make sure he can see his upper teeth. Then have him blow air while drawing attention to the vibration that occurs with a voiced v sound.

Students with phonological disorders may exhibit a process called stopping . If a student stops the v sound (i.e., says “ban” for “van”), try slowing things down. Model the v sound, pause, then say the rest of the word. This technique can also work for a stop insertion error (i.e. your student says ‘b….van’). Model the v sound, open your mouth wide and exaggerate the vowel, then say the rest of the word. “V…AAAAAAn.” Read more about the different phonological processes .

 Speech pathologists may benefit by having the child  keep the jaw in an elevated position . Try to encourage jaw stability.

The following word lists contain words with the initial v sound, medial v sound, and final v sound. These  articulation word lists  allow the SLP to easily work on a target sound in articulation therapy. Quickly pull these word lists up during your speech therapy session and pair the target word list with the game or activity of your choice. Your student can also work at the sentence level by choosing at least 2 words from a selected list and creating a sentence to practice saying aloud.

Speech Therapy Activities for the V Sound

Speech-language pathologists need effective materials to target a variety of speech sounds. Here are articulation activities that a speech therapist can use to target the V sound in speech therapy.

V Words Speech Therapy Articulation Picture Cards

These speech sound mouth cards will provide the perfect placement visual for practicing the v sound! A speech language pathologist can show the speech south mouth card first, which will remind a student of correct top teeth to bottom lip placement. These speech sound mouth cards are effective for students with a variety of speech sound disorders. The visual feedback these articulation cards provide will be incredibly useful. To assemble, simply print out the cards, laminate them, then cut them out. Assemble them together using a binder ring for easy storage.

• Articulation Tic Tac Toe

Students with articulation disorders will love this articulation tic tac toe resource , which allows you to easily pair a magnetic wand and chips (or daubers) to the game for extra special fun! These no prep, ready to go articulation worksheets include a variety of speech sounds in single words, including a page that targets /v/ initial, medial, and final positions. This articulation tic tac toe resource is fun, quick, and easy. If you are working with a student who has an articulation disorder, this tic tac toe activity is well worth checking out!

• Articulation Carryover Reading Passages

Do you need to work with older students at the carryover level? These passages were designed with your upper elementary and middle school caseload in mind. These articulation reading passages can be used on any speech sound you wish to target during articulation therapy. Your student can read the passage aloud, while highlighting and practicing words with his target speech sound. There are also comprehension questions included, so this resource is ideal for working with mixed groups of speech and language disorders. 40 Vibrant V-Words To Revamp Your Vocabulary

Ever seen a Latin inscription that uses words like jvdicivm (rather than judicium , “judgment”), vinvm (rather than vinum , “wine”), or vocivvs (rather than vocivus, “empty”)? That’s because, historically, V used to be used to represent both the “v” sound we still use it for today, and the vowel sound we now represent as a U . All that started to change in the early Middle Ages, when a trend emerged to only use angular V at the beginnings of words, and a rounded V (or, in other words, a U ) in the middles or ends of words, regardless of the sound involved. So while love became loue , upon became vpon ,  have became haue , under became vnder, and so on .

Unfortunately for V , that meant that U took the lion’s share of the use (or rather, the vse ), and earned it much more importance in English than it ever previously had. Not only that, but because you’re much more likely to come across a “u” sound inside a word than at the beginning of it, by the time the two finally began to be considered as separate letters in the 17th century, it was U that took the more commonly used vowel sound, while V took the relatively rarer v sound. Even today, you can still expect V to account for only 1 percent  of all the English you’ll use, and the letter is at the start of just over 0.5 percent of the words in a standard dictionary—including the 40 V words listed here.

2. Va-et-Vient

The French for “going-and-coming” was borrowed into English during the First World War to describe a to-ing and fro-ing, chopping-and-changing movement or pattern, or a bandying, back-and-forth discussion.

3. Vagabundulo

A prank or unscrupulous trick designed to deceive someone—in other words, one that might be played by a vagabond. 

4. Valentining

The singing of mating birds in the spring is valentining .

5. Van-Jotthery

An 18th-century Yorkshire dialect word for a random assortment of things.

6. Vandemonianiam

A Vandemonian is an inhabitant of Tasmania, which was originally named Van Diemen’s Land by the Europeans who arrived there in the 17th and 18th centuries. By the 19th century, it was being used by British courts as one of the many Australian sites to which convicts and criminals were transported as punishment. As a result, the Victorian slang term vandemonianism came to be used to refer to rowdy, disorderly behavior. 

An old Scots dialect word for a sudden and heavy shower of rain.

Named in honor of the Flemish artist Sir Anthony Van Dyck , a Vandyke is both a type of ruff collar and the name of a style of beard combining an elaborate moustache and goatee. Based on how stylish both of those were (or are, depending on your fashion sense), you can also use Vandyke as a verb meaning “to dress flamboyantly.”

Empty, blathering chatter.

10. Vapulatory

To vapulate someone is to strike or flog them, so if something feels or appears vapulatory , then it resembles a sound thrashing .

11. Vartiwell

The little metal hoop that a gate hook sits inside? That’s the vartiwell .

12. Vaticinate

Vates was the Latin word for a seer or soothsayer. Derived from that, to vaticinate means to speak like a prophet or to foresee the future, while a vaticiny is a prediction or prophecy.

13. Vauntparler

Derived from French, vauntparler is a 16th-century word for someone who speaks on someone else’s behalf …

14. Vauntsquare

… while vauntsquare is a 16th-century word meaning “to perfectly face the front.”

Also spelled feague , a veague is a teasing child.

16. Vectitation

The process of carrying something from one place to another. Anything described as vectarious does precisely that. Both words are derived from the same root as words like convection and vector .

17. Velitation

A petty fight or squabble.

18. Venenate

To venenate something is to envenom it—or, in other words, to render it poisonous.

19. Verbigerate

While verbigeration is clichéd, repetitive writing or language, the verb to verbigerate is to senselessly or involuntarily or senselessly or involuntarily repeat the same thing over and over again and over and over again and again.

20. Verecundious

An old 17th-century word meaning “ extremely modest .” The root form verecund , meaning “bashful” or “meek,” comes from a Latin word for “reverence” or “fear.”

21. Verfremdungseffekt

No prizes for guessing that this was borrowed into English from German—it’s another name for what’s otherwise known as the “alienation effect” or “distancing effect,” a theatrical term used to refer to a playwright deliberately distancing the events on stage from their audience, usually by including constant reminders that they’re merely watching a performance into the play. The German playwright Bertolt Brecht is credited with inventing this unusual technique, and is by far its most famous exponent. He would often project captions onto the stage and even go so far as to have actors step in and out of character mid-performance. (Feel free just to call it the “V-effect,” by the way …)

22. Veriloquous

If you’re veriloquous or veriloquent , then you speak the truth. ( Honestly .)

23. Verkramp

A South African-origin word used to describe someone who is narrow-minded or extremely conservative in their views. It literally means “cramped” in Afrikaans.

24. Vernalagnia

Literally meaning “spring-lust,” vernalagnia is the proper name for “spring fever”—an increase in a person’s spirits or romantic feelings when the weather improves after winter. Or, as one 19th-century dictionary defined it, “the listless feeling caused by the first sudden increase of temperature in spring." 

As well as being the name of a part of a church, vestry is an old Cornish English word for the smiling of children in their sleep.

26. Vincent

Probably a pun on vincens , a Latin word meaning “victorious” or “conquering,” vincent is a Tudor-period word for the duped player in a crooked game of cards or bowls. Vincent’s Law is an equally old nickname for the art of cheating at games.

27. Vinerous

If you’re vinerous or vansome , then you’re hard to please .

28. Vitilitigate

To quarrel or backbite .

29. Vivific

Anything that enlivens or gives life is vivific . The process involved is called vivification .

30. Vivisepulture

Need a technical term for being buried alive ? No? Well, too bad, now you have one anyway. And being burned alive? That’s vivicombustion .

31. Vizardless

Vizard is a Tudor-period word for a mask, so if you’re vizarded , you’re disguised, and if you’re vizardless , then you’re unmasked or overt. In the 17th century, a vizard-mask was a woman who “disguised herself” in public—or, in other words, a sex worker.

32. Voiding-Lobby

Coined by Shakespeare to refer to a waiting room or entranceway.

33. Volisher

Volage is an old Scots word meaning “to talk ostentatiously,” and derived from it is volisher , another word for a boastful show-off.

34. Vorlus-Snorlus

An old southwest English dialect word meaning “at random” or “haphazardly.” It’s probably derived from a local pronunciation of nolens volens , a Latin expression essentially meaning “whether willing or unwilling.” 

An old Irish word for a zealously pious person.

36. Vowel-Mauler

Nineteenth-century slang for an indistinct speaker .

If the weather looks voxy , then it looks uncertain or changeable . 

An old southwest English word meaning “to hit someone with your elbow.” 

A 16th-century word meaning “to wound.” An animal depicted as wounded on a coat of arms is said to be vulnerated .

So, Emily, we’ve been talking here on “The Daily” about prices of things and how they’ve gotten so high, mostly in the context of inflation episodes. Yes, so I have been covering this virus for the last few years. And the bird flu is absolutely tearing through poultry flocks, and that is affecting egg prices. That’s a concern for everyone, for me and for my family. But when it comes to scientists, egg prices are pretty low on their list of concerns. Because they see this bird flu virus behaving differently than previous versions have. And they’re getting nervous, in particular, about the fact that this virus is reaching places and species where it’s never been before.

OK, so bird flu, though, isn’t new. I mean I remember hearing about cases in Asia in the ‘90s. Remind us how it began.

Bird flu refers to a bunch of different viruses that are adapted to spread best in birds. Wild water birds, in particular, are known for carrying these viruses. And flu viruses are famous for also being shapeshifters. So they’re constantly swapping genes around and evolving into new strains. And as you mentioned back in the ‘90s, a new version of bird flu, a virus known as H5N1, emerged in Asia. And it has been spreading on and off around the world since then, causing periodic outbreaks.

And how are these outbreaks caused?

So wild birds are the reservoir for the virus, which means they carry it in their bodies with them around the world as they fly and travel and migrate. And most of the time, these wild birds, like ducks and geese, don’t even get very sick from this virus. But they shed it. So as they’re traveling over a poultry farm maybe, if they happen to go to the bathroom in a pond that the chickens on the farm are using or eat some of the feed that chickens on the farm are eating, they can leave the virus behind.

And the virus can get into chickens. In some cases, it causes mild illness. It’s what’s known as low pathogenic avian influenza. But sometimes the virus mutates and evolves, and it can become extremely contagious and extremely fatal in poultry.

OK, so the virus comes through wild birds, but gets into farms like this, as you’re describing. How have farms traditionally handled outbreaks, when they do happen?

Well, because this threat isn’t new, there is a pretty well-established playbook for containing outbreaks. It’s sometimes known as stamping out. And brutally, what it means is killing the birds. So the virus is so deadly in this highly pathogenic form that it’s sort of destined to kill all the birds on a farm anyway once it gets in. So the response has traditionally been to proactively depopulate or cull all the birds, so it doesn’t have a chance to spread.

So that’s pretty costly for farmers.

It is. Although the US has a program where it will reimburse farmers for their losses. And the way these reimbursements work is they will reimburse farmers only for the birds that are proactively culled, and not for those who die naturally from the virus. And the thinking behind that is it’s a way to incentivize farmers to report outbreaks early.

So, OK, lots of chickens are killed in a way to manage these outbreaks. So we know how to deal with them. But what about now? Tell me about this new strain.

So this new version of the virus, it emerged in 2020.

After the deadly outbreak of the novel coronavirus, authorities have now confirmed an outbreak of the H5N1 strain of influenza, a kind of bird flu.

And pretty quickly it became clear that a couple things set it apart.

A bald eagle found dead at Carvins Cove has tested positive for the highly contagious bird flu.

This virus, for whatever reason, seemed very good at infecting all sorts of wild birds that we don’t normally associate with bird flu.

[BIRD CRYING]

He was kind of stepping, and then falling over, and using its wing to right itself.

Things like eagles and condors and pelicans.

We just lost a parliament of owls in Minneapolis.

Yeah, a couple of high profile nests.

And also in the past, wild birds have not traditionally gotten very sick from this virus. And this version of the virus not only spread widely through the wild bird population, but it proved to be devastating.

The washing up along the East Coast of the country from Scotland down to Suffolk.

We were hearing about mass die-offs of seabirds in Europe by the hundreds and the thousands.

And the bodies of the dead dot the island wherever you look.

Wow. OK. So then as we know, this strain, like previous ones, makes its way from wild animals to farmed animals, namely to chickens. But it’s even more deadly.

Absolutely. And in fact, it has already caused the worst bird flu outbreak in US history. So more than 90 million birds in the US have died as a result of this virus.

90 million birds.

Yes, and I should be clear that represents two things. So some of those birds are birds who naturally got infected and died from the virus. But the vast majority of them are birds that were proactively culled. What it adds up to is, is 90 million farmed birds in the US have died since this virus emerged. And it’s not just a chicken problem. Another thing that has been weird about this virus is it has jumped into other kinds of farms. It is the first time we’ve seen a bird flu virus jump into US livestock.

And it’s now been reported on a number of dairy farms across eight US states. And that’s just something that’s totally unprecedented.

So it’s showing up at Dairy farms now. You’re saying that bird flu has now spread to cows. How did that happen?

So we don’t know exactly how cows were first infected, but most scientists’ best guess is that maybe an infected wild bird that was migrating shed the virus into some cattle feed or a pasture or a pond, and cattle picked it up. The good news is they don’t seem to get nearly as sick as chickens do. They are generally making full recoveries on their own in a couple of weeks.

OK, so no mass culling of cows?

No, that doesn’t seem to be necessary at this point. But the bad news is that it’s starting to look like we’re seeing this virus spread from cow to cow. We don’t know exactly how that’s happening yet. But anytime you see cow-to-cow or mammal-to-mammal transmission, that’s a big concern.

And why is that exactly?

Well, there are a bunch of reasons. First, it could allow the outbreak to get much bigger, much faster, which might increase the risk to the food supply. And we might also expect it to increase the risk to farm workers, people who might be in contact with these sick cows.

Right now, the likelihood that a farmer who gets this virus passes it on is pretty low. But any time you see mammal-to-mammal transmission, it increases the chance that the virus will adapt and possibly, maybe one day get good at spreading between humans. To be clear, that’s not something that there’s any evidence happening in cows right now. But the fact that there’s any cow-to-cow transmission happening at all is enough to have scientists a bit concerned.

And then if we think more expansively beyond what’s happening on farms, there’s another big danger lurking out there. And that’s what happens when this virus gets into wild animals, vast populations that we can’t control.

So, Emily, you said that another threat was the threat of flu in wild animal populations. Clearly, of course, it’s already in wild birds. Where else has it gone?

Well, the reason it’s become such a threat is because of how widespread it’s become in wild birds. So they keep reintroducing it to wild animal populations pretty much anywhere they go. So we’ve seen the virus repeatedly pop up in all sorts of animals that you might figure would eat a wild bird, so foxes, bobcats, bears. We actually saw it in a polar bear, raccoons. So a lot of carnivores and scavengers.

The thinking is that these animals might stumble across a sick or dead bird, eat it, and contract the virus that way. But we’re also seeing it show up in some more surprising places, too. We’ve seen the virus in a bottle-nosed dolphin, of all places.

And most devastatingly, we’ve seen enormous outbreaks in other sorts of marine mammals, especially sea lions and seals.

So elephant seals, in particular in South America, were just devastated by this virus last fall. My colleague Apoorva Mandavilli and I were talking to some scientists in South America who described to us what they called a scene from hell, of walking out onto a beach in Argentina that is normally crowded with chaotic, living, breathing, breeding, elephant seals — and the beach just being covered by carcass, after carcass, after carcass.

Mostly carcasses of young newborn pups. The virus seemed to have a mortality rate of 95 percent in these elephant seal pups, and they estimated that it might have killed more than 17,000 of the pups that were born last year. So almost the entire new generation of this colony. These are scientists that have studied these seals for decades. And they said they’ve never seen anything like it before.

And why is it so far reaching, Emily? I mean, what explains these mass die-offs?

There are probably a few explanations. One is just how much virus is out there in the environment being shed by wild birds into water and onto beaches. These are also places that viruses like this haven’t been before. So it’s reaching elephant seals and sea lions in South America that have no prior immunity.

There’s also the fact that these particular species, these sea lions and seals, tend to breed in these huge colonies all crowded together on beaches. And so what that means is if a virus makes its way into the colony, it’s very conducive conditions for it to spread. And scientists think that that’s actually what’s happening now. That it’s not just that all these seals are picking up the virus from individual birds, but that they’re actually passing it to each other.

So basically, this virus is spreading to places it’s never been before, kind of virgin snow territory, where animals just don’t have the immunity against it. And once it gets into a population packed on a beach, say, of elephant seals, it’s just like a knife through butter.

Absolutely. And an even more extreme example of that is what we’re starting to see happen in Antarctica, where there’s never been a bird flu outbreak before until last fall, for the first time, this virus reached the Antarctic mainland. And we are now seeing the virus move through colonies of not only seabirds and seals, but penguin colonies, which have not been exposed to these viruses before.

And it’s too soon to say what the toll will be. But penguins also, of course, are known for breeding in these large colonies.

Probably. don’t have many immune defenses against this virus, and of course, are facing all these other environmental threats. And so there’s a lot of fear that you add on the stress of a bird flu virus, and it could just be a tipping point for penguins.

Emily, at this point, I’m kind of wondering why more people aren’t talking about this. I mean, I didn’t know any of this before having this conversation with you, and it feels pretty worrying.

Well, a lot of experts and scientists are talking about this with rising alarm and in terms that are quite stark. They’re talking about the virus spreading through wild animal populations so quickly and so ferociously that they’re calling it an ecological disaster.

But that’s a disaster that sometimes seems distant from us, both geographically, we’re talking about things that are happening maybe at the tip of Argentina or in Antarctica. And also from our concerns of our everyday lives, what’s happening in Penguins might not seem like it has a lot to do with the price of a carton of eggs at the grocery store. But I think that we should be paying a lot of attention to how this virus is moving through animal populations, how quickly it’s moving through animal populations, and the opportunities that it is giving the virus to evolve into something that poses a much bigger threat to human health.

So the way it’s spreading in wild animals, even in remote places like Antarctica, that’s important to watch, at least in part because there’s a real danger to people here.

So we know that the virus can infect humans, and that generally it’s not very good at spreading between humans. But the concern all along has been that if this virus has more opportunities to spread between mammals, it will get better at spreading between them. And that seems to be what is happening in seals and sea lions. Scientists are already seeing evidence that the virus is adapting as it passes from marine mammal to marine mammal. And that could turn it into a virus that’s also better at spreading between people.

And if somebody walks out onto a beach and touches a dead sea lion, if their dog starts playing with a sea lion carcass, you could imagine that this virus could make its way out of marine mammals and into the human population. And if it’s this mammalian adapted version of the virus that makes its way out, that could be a bigger threat to human health.

So the sheer number of hosts that this disease has, the more opportunity it has to mutate, and the more chance it has to mutate in a way that would actually be dangerous for people.

Yes, and in particular, the more mammalian hosts. So that gives the virus many more opportunities to become a specialist in mammals instead of a specialist in birds, which is what it is right now.

Right. I like that, a specialist in mammals. So what can we do to contain this virus?

Well, scientists are exploring new options. There’s been a lot of discussion about whether we should start vaccinating chickens in the US. The government, USDA labs, have been testing some poultry vaccines. It’s probably scientifically feasible. There are challenges there, both in terms of logistics — just how would you go about vaccinating billions of chickens every year. There are also trade questions. Traditionally, a lot of countries have not been willing to accept poultry products from countries that vaccinate their poultry.

And there’s concern about whether the virus might spread undetected in flocks that are vaccinated. So as we saw with COVID, the vaccine can sometimes stop you from getting sick, but it doesn’t necessarily stop infection. And so countries are worried they might unknowingly import products that are harboring the virus.

And what about among wild animals? I mean, how do you even begin to get your head around that?

Yeah, I mean, thinking about vaccinating wild animals maybe makes vaccinating all the chickens in the US look easy. There has been some discussion of limited vaccination campaigns, but that’s not feasible on a global scale. So unfortunately, the bottom line is there isn’t a good way to stop spread in wild animals. We can try to protect some vulnerable populations, but we’re not going to stop the circulation of this virus.

So, Emily, we started this conversation with a kind of curiosity that “The Daily” had about the price of eggs. And then you explained the bird flu to us. And then somehow we ended up learning about an ecological disaster that’s unfolding all around us, and potentially the source of the next human pandemic. That is pretty scary.

It is scary, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed by it. And I feel like I should take a step back and say none of this is inevitable. None of this is necessarily happening tomorrow. But this is why scientists are concerned and why they think it’s really important to keep a very close eye on what’s happening both on farms and off farms, as this virus spreads through all sorts of animal populations.

One thing that comes up again and again and again in my interviews with people who have been studying bird flu for decades, is how this virus never stops surprising them. And sometimes those are bad surprises, like these elephant seal die-offs, the incursions into dairy cattle. But there are some encouraging signs that have emerged recently. We’re starting to see some early evidence that some of the bird populations that survived early brushes with this virus might be developing some immunity. So that’s something that maybe could help slow the spread of this virus in animal populations.

We just don’t entirely know how this is going to play out. Flu is a very difficult, wily foe. And so that’s one reason scientists are trying to keep such a close, attentive eye on what’s happening.

Probably not. There is a difference between speech written (or posted) on campus and speech written (or posted) off-campus. Off-campus speech — like yours — is often protected, but, as always, there are some exceptions!

When Can a Student’s Off-Campus Speech be Punished?

Swear words in off-campus group chats have caused a lot of commotion lately. The most recent Supreme Court decision on student speech is centered around the use of the word “fuck" in an off-campus group snapchat, similar to yours (read more about the Mahanoy case here). The case discusses factors that schools should consider when it comes to censoring off-campus speech.

First, a student’s off-campus speech will generally be the responsibility of that student’s parents. So, maybe try not to swear if doing so will cause a problem in your home. Although the school may censor speech outside of school property, the school’s ability to censor is much more limited. If the speech caused a substantial disruption at school, was created on school grounds, or has a substantial connection to the school (if the school’s name is part of the post), there is a higher chance of the school being able to do something about it.

Schools have an interest in protecting unpopular ideas because schools are tasked with fostering an environment that encourages students to speak freely and share their ideas. Using vulgar language in school may get you into trouble, but using such words off-campus makes it a lot harder for schools to punish you.

Keep in mind, student athletes are sometimes held to a higher standard. Some schools have students sign a waiver that requires them to behave kindly and achieve good grades in order to participate. If your snapchat did not make a connection to your school and did not cause a substantial disruption to the team or in the classroom, your school will likely not censor you. You just want to make sure that if you agree to demonstrate good behavior outside of the field/court you play on, you commit to upholding that higher standard.

What is Lewd and Vulgar Language?

A lot of language can be considered lewd and vulgar. However, lewd and vulgar language is usually offensive speech such as swear words, sexual innuendos, or other language that could be considered inappropriate. Using the word “fuck” would fall into this category of speech.

When students are at school, schools have a lot of power to punish students for this type of speech because the school has an interest in teaching students socially appropriate behavior and preventing disruption at school. However, when students are off-campus, the fact that language is just lewd, vulgar, or offensive is not enough for the school to punish the student. There must be something more.

Ultimately, public schools have the ability to regulate off-campus student speech, but only in certain situations. More specifically, a public school may regulate student off-campus speech when it involves bullying, harassment, and online-based learning. You know the drill, the school may punish a student who engaged in speech (on or off-campus) that causes a foreseeable risk of “material and substantial disruption” to the school environment or is threatening to students or the learning environment.

Ultimately, the school likely will not be able to censor you for dropping the f-bomb on Snapchat. But, a private online conversation between classmates may not always stay private. So, be careful with what you send.

Biden declares 'we can't be trusted,' mistakenly credits Trump during Florida speech

TAMPA, Fla. (TND) — President Joe Biden committed yet another verbal slip-up during a speech in Tampa, Fla. Tuesday night.

The gaffe came as Biden tried to make the case former President Donald Trump is untrustworthy. In doing so, Biden accidentally credited Trump with proving the Biden White House "can't be trusted."

In a sense, I don't know why we're surprised by Trump," Biden said. "How many times does he have to prove we can't be trusted?"

The president specifically pointed to Trump's influence in overturning Roe v. Wade via his Supreme Court appointments. He also took a jab at Trump for the "God Bless the USA Bible" he promoted on social media.

The flub-up is just the latest in a long list of mistakes made by Biden during public appearances. Last week, Biden was mocked by Republicans for claiming he told Israel not to "move on Haifa" despite Haifa being a city in Israel.

During a separate appearance last week, Biden told United Steelworkers Union members their union was "the first outfit ever to endorse" him. Biden said the same thing of the United Auto Workers (UAW) in February.

Democrats have been up in arms since former special counsel Robert Hur labeled Biden an elderly man with a "poor memory" in his report regarding the Biden classified documents investigation. Several have called Hur's assessment of Biden political despite concerns among the American public about Biden's mental acuity.

Biden's stumbles have even earned him international attention, with the Italian satire show Fratelli di Crozza poking fun at the president's cognitive abilities in its season-opening episode in February.
