In recent years, the field of NLP has witnessed remarkable advancements, bringing us closer to the realm of humanlike language generation. Among these advancements, ChatGPT, based on the groundbreaking GPT-3.5 architecture developed by OpenAI, stands as an impressive language model capable of generating coherent and contextually relevant text responses. With its ability to understand and respond to user inputs, ChatGPT has opened up new possibilities for various applications, including research and publication. 1 – 3

The traditional process of conducting research and publishing scientific papers has been significantly transformed by the emergence of ChatGPT. Researchers and authors can now leverage the power of this sophisticated language model to streamline and enhance their workflow, leading to improved efficiency and higher-quality publications. However, using ChatGPT effectively in the research and publication domain requires a comprehensive understanding of its capabilities, limitations, and best practices.

In this commentary I offer my thoughts for a step-by-step guide for researchers and authors who seek to harness the potential of ChatGPT in their research endeavors and publication efforts. By exploring various aspects, such as data preprocessing, fine-tuning techniques, prompt engineering, and ethical considerations, this guide will equip researchers with the necessary knowledge to harness the full potential of ChatGPT in their scientific pursuits. Moreover, this commentary will delve into the challenges associated with using ChatGPT for research and publication, including biases, interpretability, and concerns regarding plagiarism. By addressing these challenges directly, I aim to provide researchers with valuable insights and recommendations to navigate these important issues and ensure the responsible and ethical use of ChatGPT as a research tool. 4

The significance of my guide lies in its potential to bridge the gap between the rapid progress of language models like ChatGPT and the research and publication process. By elucidating the intricacies of integrating ChatGPT into scientific workflows, researchers will be empowered to leverage this advanced technology effectively, thereby enhancing the overall quality and impact of their research output. 5 In the following sections, I present a comprehensive overview of the steps involved in using ChatGPT for research and publication.

Step 1: Title and Title Page Creation by ChatGPT

ChatGPT can be a valuable tool in generating titles for research papers. Its ability to understand and generate humanlike text allows it to analyze and synthesize information provided by researchers to craft concise and impactful titles. By leveraging its vast knowledge base and language capabilities, ChatGPT can assist in capturing the essence of a research paper, conveying the main focus and contributions succinctly. Researchers can collaborate with ChatGPT by providing relevant information, such as the subject, objectives, methodology, and key findings of their study. ChatGPT can then generate multiple title options, offering different perspectives and angles that researchers can consider. This collaboration with ChatGPT can save time and stimulate creativity, helping researchers refine their titles to accurately represent their work and engage potential readers. ChatGPT can then be used to create the entire title page and then can also customize based on each journal’s recommendations.

For example:

An external file that holds a picture, illustration, etc.
Object name is i2331-348X-28-6-576-f01.jpg

Thus, we see that ChatGPT can write an entire title page based on just the title and author details. We notice that ChatGPT has created an email address that is incorrect and needs manual rectification. However, the rest of the title page, including keywords and the running title, is appropriate.

Step 2: Abstract/Summary Creation by chatGPT

ChatGPT can assist in condensing complex information into a clear and engaging abstract/summary, helping researchers communicate the significance and novelty of their research to a wider audience. By leveraging the language proficiency of ChatGPT, researchers can save time and effort in crafting abstracts while ensuring that the key aspects of their study are accurately represented.

In this example, we demonstrate that ChatGPT can create an entire abstract just by using the title alone. However, the more information researchers provide (preferably the entire body of the paper should be entered into chatGPT), the more accurate the abstract becomes.

An external file that holds a picture, illustration, etc.
Object name is i2331-348X-28-6-576-f02.jpg

Step 3: Introduction Creation by ChatGPT

By collaborating with ChatGPT, researchers can provide key information, such as the background, significance, and objectives of their study. ChatGPT can then generate a well-structured introduction that sets the context, highlights the relevance of the research, and outlines the paper’s objectives. Also, ChatGPT can be used to generate keywords and generate an abbreviations list from the article by using prompts. However, it is important to note that the generated introduction should be reviewed, customized, and refined by the researchers to align with their specific study and writing style.

In the example below, we note that ChatGPT has not only created an introduction but also the objectives of the study, which can then be edited by the human author.

An external file that holds a picture, illustration, etc.
Object name is i2331-348X-28-6-576-f03.jpg

Step 4: Can ChatGPT Create a Literature Review?

Yes, ChatGPT can help generate a literature review, but it is important to note that it may not have access to the most up-to-date research articles and studies due to copyrights and limited access to some journals. Additionally, a literature review typically requires a comprehensive analysis of multiple sources, so the generated response may not cover all relevant studies. Nonetheless, it can assist in providing a basic literature review on a given topic, which will need human authors to add to and edit it.

An external file that holds a picture, illustration, etc.
Object name is i2331-348X-28-6-576-f04.jpg

As we can see, ChatGPT is not as good at giving a detailed review of the literature as it is at summarizing contents or creating an introduction. Thus, its use is limited, if there is any at all, in this section of the paper.

Step 5: Can ChatGPT Assist in Brainstorming the Methodology of Studies?

ChatGPT can be a helpful tool in conceptualizing the methodology for research papers. By engaging in a conversation with ChatGPT, researchers can discuss their research objectives, study design, data collection methods, and data analysis techniques. ChatGPT’s natural language understanding allows it to provide suggestions and insights based on its knowledge base and understanding of research methodologies. Although ChatGPT can assist in generating ideas and providing guidance, it is important for researchers to critically evaluate and adapt the suggestions to align with their specific research goals and requirements.

Although the methodology is something that is unique to each paper and needs a human researcher to conceptualize it, we see in this example that ChatGPT can assist by giving ideas and examples based on the input of the title by the human researcher. Thus, ChatGPT can be part of brainstorming sessions when conceptualizing a study, although this section needs significant editing by a human, unlike the introduction or summary.

An external file that holds a picture, illustration, etc.
Object name is i2331-348X-28-6-576-f05.jpg

Step 6: Do Not Use ChatGPT for Fabricating Patient Data or Results!

This section of the paper must be authentic, and ChatGPT has a limited role, if any, because patient data have to be original. ChatGPT also currently cannot analyze clinical data compared with statistical software, like SPSS Statistics and Base SAS. However, Microsoft appears to be developing an Excel copilot that uses AI to create graphs and plots, and its use needs to be evaluated once it is released to the public. 6

Step 7: Discussion and Conclusions

This section of the paper can be generated by ChatGPT if all results are pasted as input; however, this section also needs manual editing because inaccuracies are common. By discussing their research with ChatGPT, researchers can also identify potential limitations, discuss the broader implications of their findings, and propose future research directions. Although ChatGPT can generate suggestions and facilitate the thought process, it is important for researchers to critically evaluate the information provided and ensure that the Discussion and Conclusion sections align with the specific research objectives and findings of their study. Ultimately, ChatGPT can serve as a supportive tool in developing a comprehensive and well-rounded discussion and conclusion for research papers.

Step 8: References

As per the author's experience, although ChatGPT is capable of creating references for an article, most of them are incorrect. So, using ChatGPT for creating references is not recommended. However, ChatGPT can convert references into any journaling style if the references are entered into ChatGPT and it is asked to convert them into a specific style.

Disadvantages of Using ChatGPT in Research

Although ChatGPT offers numerous advantages for assisting in the writing of research papers, there are also some important potential disadvantages to consider:

  • Lack of domain expertise: ChatGPT is a general-purpose language model trained on a diverse range of Internet text, which means it may lack the specific domain expertise required for certain research topics. It may generate responses that are not accurate or well informed in specialized fields, potentially leading to incorrect or misleading information in research papers.
  • Inconsistency and variability: ChatGPT’s responses can be inconsistent and vary depending on the input phrasing or prompt formulation. This can lead to unpredictability in generating reliable and coherent content, requiring additional effort to refine and ensure accuracy in research papers.
  • Limited control over output: Although researchers can guide the model’s responses through prompts, ChatGPT’s generation process is still primarily autonomous. Researchers have limited control over the precise content and structure of the generated text, which may require careful editing and review to align with specific research goals, standards, and above all, accuracy.
  • Biases and ethical considerations: Language models like ChatGPT can inadvertently reflect biases present in the training data. These biases may perpetuate existing societal or cultural biases in research papers, potentially leading to unfair or discriminatory content. The careful examination and mitigation of biases are crucial to ensure ethical and unbiased research output. 7
  • Lack of interpretability: ChatGPT’s decision-making process is complex and not easily interpretable. Researchers may struggle to understand the reasoning behind the model’s generated responses, making it challenging to assess the reliability and credibility of the information provided. Ensuring transparency and interpretability in research papers becomes more challenging with such models. ChatGPT should cite the sources for its data, like Google Bard does.
  • Plagiarism concerns: Because of its vast training data from the Internet, ChatGPT may inadvertently generate text that resembles or replicates existing content without proper citation or attribution. Researchers must be cautious about unintentional plagiarism and ensure that generated content is appropriately referenced and original. So, all ChatGPt-generated articles need to be double checked using antiplagiarism software.

In this commentary I have provided a comprehensive step-by-step guide for researchers and authors on harnessing the power of ChatGPT in the realm of research and publication. By exploring crucial aspects, such as data preprocessing, fine-tuning techniques, prompt engineering, and ethical considerations, the guide equips researchers with the necessary knowledge and tools to effectively integrate ChatGPT into their scientific workflows. 8

Through clear instructions, examples, and guidelines, researchers can navigate the complexities of using ChatGPT, leading to enhanced productivity and improved quality in their research output. Moreover, I address the challenges associated with biases, interpretability, and plagiarism concerns, ensuring the responsible and ethical usage of ChatGPT as a research tool.

The significance of this research lies in its ability to bridge the gap between the rapid advancements in language models like ChatGPT and the research and publication process. By empowering researchers with the skills to leverage ChatGPT effectively, this guide fosters innovation, drives scientific progress, and opens up new possibilities for transformative contributions to various fields. 9

As language-driven technologies continue to evolve, researchers must stay abreast of the latest advancements and best practices. 00:23 Using ChatGPT to generate a research paper from scratch

A pair of scientists have produced a research paper in less than an hour with the help of the generative artificial intelligence (AI) ChatGPT. The aim of this exercise was to explore the technology’s ability to act as a research ‘co-pilot’ and spark debate about its use. While AI tools like ChatGPT have the potential to speed up research, it is still unclear what role they should play in research.

06:28 Last week saw the world’s hottest day on record – twice

On Monday last week the average worldwide temperature reached 17.01 °C, beating a record set in 2016. Then, on Tuesday that record was broken again, as average temperatures hit 17.18 °C. Further record-breaking days may follow this year as a result of climate change, and the arrival of the El Niño weather phenomenon, which is expected to strengthen in the coming months.

10:03 Anti-ageing protein boosts monkey memories

Injecting monkeys with the naturally occurring protein klotho can improve their cognition. Previous work had shown that elevated levels of the enzyme could improve cognitive functions in mice, now researchers have shown that injecting klotho into old rhesus macaques caused them to perform better in memory-related tasks. While the mechanism behind this effect is unclear, it’s hoped that the finding could ultimately lead to new treatments for neurodegenerative diseases in humans.

Benjamin Thompson

Hi, Benjamin from the Nature Podcast here. We're going to change things up a little bit this week. And we're going to take a deep-dive into some stories that have been in the Nature Briefing over the past few days. And joining me to do so are Noah Baker. Noah, how're you doing today?

I'm very well. Thank you. Looking forward to chatting about Briefing items.

And Dan Fox, Dan. Hello.

Hi. How's it going?

Yeah, it's going very, very well. Well, listen, three stories to go through today. Noah, why don't you go first? You're talking about AI? Right?

Yeah. So I think probably one of the hottest topics at the moment is generative AI. And this is a story all about ChatGPT, the poster child of said movement in the news. But specifically, this is about some researchers that have used ChatGPT to generate an entire paper from scratch. And so there's a news article in Nature that I've been reading about whether or not that paper is any good, what the limitations are. Should we be scared? Spoiler alert. No, not really yet. But maybe it could be useful as a tool in the future.

When you say an entire paper, do you mean what abstract, introduction, methods, conclusion? The whole business?

Absolutely the whole thing. So it did the analysis with some prompts. And it created an article that was quote, fluent, insightful and presented in the expected structure for a scientific paper. But it did it with a lot of help. So the researchers wrote a program which prompted ChatGPT to do this in stages. And I can talk you through what those stages were from the sort of beginning of the research all the way through to the published paper in the end, but this entire process took less than an hour, which is I guess, a big part of why this is something that's worthy of talking about now.

Maybe we start off with, with what was this paper about? And how did the researchers go about making it?

Yeah, so it's two researchers from Israel from Technion in Haifa. And they essentially started with the data, right. So they started with some freely available data, CDC telephone survey data about 250,000 people talking about their diabetes status. And then they wrote this program, which essentially prompted ChatGPT in an automated way. So it said, 'Hey, ChatGPT write some code that could uncover patterns in this data'. And so it wrote some code to uncover some patterns. And its first attempt, it was a nightmare. Loads of errors, things that didn't work. But the program took those error messages, fed it back into ChatGPT and said 'do better'. And eventually it did, it produced code that could be used to explore the dataset. And then they said, 'Okay, cool. You've got a structured data set now, look for some things'. And so it said, 'why don't you explore how physical activity and diet are related to diabetes risk', so it generated more code. And it found yep, sure, eating more fruit and vegetables and exercising is linked to a lower risk of diabetes according to these data. And then still via this program, it prompted ChatGPT to summarize those findings in a table, then write the whole results section. Then step-by-step, they got it to write the abstract, the introduction, the methods and the discussion section of the manuscript. And then after that, refine all the text so that it could go through and refine it all. So there was lots and lots of prompts. But what they ended up with is in less than an hour, they've essentially done some research and written a paper, or rather ChatGPT had done some research and written a paper.

I mean, that's really interesting. But I guess diabetes, and correlation with eating fruit and veg and physical activity is not the most, not the most novel piece of research.

Yeah, for sure. I mean, this is one of the things that the researchers quoted in this story have said, you know, this is not something that's going to surprise any medical expert. It's not close to being novel. But really importantly, one of the things that ChatGPT did do when it was generating the text for this paper is it used quotes like this "addresses a gap in the literature", which this very much isn't. There's very little novel about this finding, in terms of our understanding of diabetes and risk factors for diabetes. And this is one of the big concerns that scientists have about using ChatGPT for this kind of purpose.

So it's not necessarily what it found then. But it's the fact that it could be done that that is so interesting about this work.

Yeah. I mean, researchers are trying to find ways that ChatGPT could be used as a tool, essentially, it's like, how could it help the scientific process? How could it be used to make things more efficient for researchers to be able to do more work, more insightful work, see things that perhaps aren't seen otherwise? But there are lots and lots of questions around whether or not you can do that. This approach of trying to get it to create an entire paper means that you end up with a paper that's not super novel or exciting, and equally has lots of made up citations. It's another thing that it did, it hallucinated concepts it didn't really understand, well, because ChatGPT doesn't understand anything, it doesn't really understand any of that context. And so it needs a lot of support from the researchers, however, a lot happened in an hour. So there's a discussion in this piece about how it might be useful and where the problems might lie. And there are suggestions that it could be very useful to just throw up a bunch of potential avenues for research, or perhaps things like summarization of results could be something that ChatGPT could do very quickly. Or perhaps even things like writing code is something that ChatGPT can do very quickly. So there are places it could be useful, but building an entire paper, perhaps not. And there are other reasons that this could be concerning. So one of the things that's that's mentioned here in this story is things like P-hacking. So P-hacking is when scientists just test a bunch of hypotheses on datasets, hoping that one of them's going to work and then they just only talk about that thing. And in a world where you can essentially say, 'Hey, ChatGPT, do some P-hacking for me' because it can look at so many things so quickly, then potentially you end up with a situation where you're using an AI to enhance this relatively dishonest practice. So concerns abound, but potentially a very powerful tool. There's just a lot of kinks to work out before we can really get there and use it appropriately. And that includes in publishing research as well.

Yeah, I mean, quite the quite the sort of two-way street and for a number of reasons, right, because you said you could do it in an hour. And I can almost hear some of the researchers listening to this podcast, rubbing their hands going 'writing papers is boring and takes ages, this will be super useful'. But the other side of that is, it could be used to just churn out absolute dross, right. And these kind of, we've heard about paper mills before publishing fake research.

Yeah, absolutely. And I think there's a lot to be watched here, you know, there's a lot of onus on journals like Nature and other journals to continue to develop their process for how AI use can be declared. I mean, this is something that is very important to try to declare how AI tools are used in papers so that we can better see and spot places where there may have been biases or hallucinations, inputted by the generative AI. And that's something that editors can do. It's something that scientists need to do, because the stuff that's created can be so fluent ChatGPT can make stuff that sounds so convincing, that even experts in the field can sometimes struggle to see places where it's made stuff up, or it's seen things that aren't there. So, lots to watch, but perhaps smaller steps at the moment, so we can make things actually useful.

Well, I have a feeling that isn't the last we're going to hear about ChatGPT on the Nature Podcast . But let's move on to our second story today. And it's a story that I've brought, and I read about it in Bloomberg . And it's about some records that have been broken, but sadly, not in a good way. It's how data suggests that last week, the average global temperatures across the world broke the existing record, not once but twice.

Yeah, this is the record in like human history, right, a really significant record to break twice in one year.

Yeah it's not a good one. And this is according to data from the US National Centers for Environmental Prediction. In terms of the numbers then, the average worldwide temperature reached 17.01 ° on Monday last week. And that was then shortly broken on Tuesday, when they reached 17.18 °C. This record isn't official, it has to be said. But I think it is quite a sobering indication of where things are right now.

Yeah, I mean, point two-degree rise doesn't seem much on any given day. But across, you know, when you start to bring in averages, and also when you start to think about this as a global temperature, it's a really significant jump in temperature. Right?

Absolutely. And this comes against a backdrop of a lot that's going on across the world right now. I mean, there's been huge heatwaves in China with records are broken there. The hottest June in the UK on record, Antarctica had its highest temperature recorded in July, at 8.7 °C, heatwaves in Spain, you know, across the land and sea.

So is there a sense of some of the reasons behind it being the hottest day on record sort of two, two days in a week?

WellI mean, you'll be you'll be shocked to know that climate change is clearly playing a part in the fact that the world is warming. But there's something else involved here as well, and that is El Niño, which is this sort of global weather phenomenon that happens every sort of two to seven years.

Right, So we have a record broken twice in one week. And then at the same time, we have a new El Niño cycle starting, which we know is associated with particularly high temperatures. This doesn't sound like good maths, is this gonna be a particularly big El Niño cycle?

Well, that's a great question. And it's actually yet to be decided. Researchers don't quite know yet. But what I can say is last time, there was a strong El Niño that corresponded to the hottest year on record, and that was in 2016. So from what I've read, there is a sense that really, maybe 2023, or maybe even 2024, when El Niño really kicks in, could break the record for the for the hottest year.

And with hot temperatures also comes more extreme weather and loads of other potential knock ons, right?

So this changes weather patterns across the globe, due to a slackening of the trade winds above the tropical Pacific Ocean. It could lead to droughts in Australia and southeast Asia, increased rainfall in places like the Horn of Africa. And that can lead to localized flooding, which can damage crops. But also other things as well, which maybe not entirely obvious. For example, strong rainfall could lead to an increase in the number of mosquitoes, which could then lead to more diseases being spread. Something similar was seen in Peru, weather pattern change was linked to a severe outbreak of the disease, dengue, which of course, is a viral disease spread by mosquitoes. So there's a great deal going on here, which could have really quite severe effects on life and livelihoods. And of course, you know, in the face of a warming world, one of the only ways we can get on top of this is reducing emissions, right. And of course, COP28 is coming up in November. And it'd be interesting to see in the face of of what is potentially going to happen, whether that will affect negotiations and discussions at that meeting at all.

I wonder whether or not this will change the urgency with which people discuss things. Anyway. Dan, do you have anything a little bit more uplifting? Perhaps maybe something a little bit less doom-and-gloom to talk about as a final story for the show.

Yeah. So this is I think it's quite a positive research development. So some researchers have published a paper that's come out in Nature Aging , where rhesus macaques were injected with a protein called klotho. And that increased their cognitive ability, quite significantly, for well over two weeks, and is potentially a treatment for degenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's and dementia.

So, I know this is probably trivializing, but it sounds to me like scientists have injected monkeys with a super smart-serum.

I mean, it's very much the plot of 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes , starring James Franco. But this is a bit more exciting in that...

But I mean, it's probably less exciting. There's no talking monkeys. But they are they are 15% better at finding snacks.

I was interested in that. So what is it that they've actually done to measure cognitive ability here? Is this a series of behavioral tasks?

So the tests the researchers used, involved putting a treat reward into one of a variety of different wells, so different sort of geographical location, spatial locations. That experiment was hidden from the monkeys for a period of time. And then when they returned, they had to find the treat that they'd seen hidden previously. So the researchers say, this is similar to a task like finding your car in a busy car park, and it's something that specifically gets harder as you get older. So the rhesus macaques were older macaques as well. So the average age of these monkeys was around 22 years old, which the authors of the paper say corresponds to being about a 65 year old human. And before they were injected with this protein, they successfully found the treat in the correct well 45% of the time, after an injection with this protein klotho, they found that 60% of the time. So a 15%, increase in their ability to find their car in a car park, find their their tasty snack, and that lasted for two weeks.

Klotho that is a protein, I have to say, I've never heard of. What is klotho, and what's the scientists know about it?

So klotho is protein that's expressed in the body in a few different places, it comes in a few different varieties. And these researchers are looking at alpha klotho. So it's something that actually decreases in the body as you age. And the researchers have called it a 'longevity factor'.

Hence it becoming a target to try to understand what's going on with aging, because it's something that seems to be correlated with aging.

Wow, what was going on in the brains of these monkeys then? Because it seems like fairly straightforward to inject them with protein, but I'm sure there's more to it than that.

Well, I think that's one of the fascinating parts of the story is they don't really know. The actual mechanics of how this protein is working, is not very well understood. So it's previously been shown that they get a similar effect from injecting this protein into mice, increases in synaptic plasticity and cognition and in resilience against aging and Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. But they also know that this protein doesn't pass the blood-brain barrier. So there's some sort of intermediary that's communicating this effect into the brain. And that isn't well understood. And something else that complicates matters, and shows that there's kind of a more complicated process going on then the researchers initially thought is that, while a low-dose works very well, and gives this two-week effect, at higher doses, there's no cognitive improvement. And they think that possibly even higher doses, there'd be cognitive impairment. So it's not really clear exactly what's going on inside the body.

Well, so you can improve a monkey memory using a protein without really understanding how the protein works. Could you improve a human memory by doing a similar thing?

The short answer is, is yes. So it's already been shown that individuals that have elevated klotho levels due to natural variation show improved cognition and decreased risk of dementia and Alzheimer's. So there's already been a demonstrated benefit to klotho in humans. And the researchers behind this work have said that there's a very strong reason to jump into human clinical trials now.

So lots of excitement in the field. But knowing scientists as I do, I can imagine there are certainly people that are saying, Sure, clinical trials will be interesting. But we do really need to understand this mechanism a little bit better, right?

Absolutely. And there are research saying that a better understanding of the proteins mode of action will be crucial for realizing its clinical potential and the authors of the paper, and the authors also mentioned in the paper, that identifying these intermediaries that are taking the message from this klotho across the blood-brain barrier into the brain itself, is going to be key.

When they do work out what's going on with that intermediary, please come back on and let us know. But let's leave it there for this week's Briefing Chat and listeners, for more of these stories, look out for links in the show notes, where you'll also find a link where you can sign up for the Nature Briefing to get even more science stories like this delivered directly to your inbox. But for this week, all that's left to say is Noah and Dan, thank you so much for joining me.

Cheers, Ben.

Yeah, thanks for having me.

Passing off AI-generated text as your own work is widely considered plagiarism. However, when used correctly, AI tools like ChatGPT can legitimately help guide your writing process.

These tools are especially helpful in the preparation and revision stages of your essay writing.

You can use ChatGPT to:

  • Write a research question
  • Develop an outline
  • Find relevant source information
  • Summarize or paraphrase text
  • Get feedback

Writing a research question, developing an outline, finding source recommendations, summarizing/paraphrasing text, getting feedback, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions.

You can use ChatGPT to brainstorm potential research questions or to narrow down your thesis statement . Begin by inputting a description of the research topic or assigned question. Then include a prompt like “Write 3 possible research questions on this topic.”

You can make the prompt as specific as you like. For example, you can include the writing level (e.g., high school essay, college essay), perspective (e.g., first person) and the type of essay you intend to write (e.g., argumentative , descriptive , expository , or narrative ).

You can also mention any facts or viewpoints you’ve gathered that should be incorporated into the output.

If the output doesn’t suit your topic, you can click “Regenerate response” to have the tool generate a new response. You can do this as many times as you like, and you can try making your prompt more specific if you struggle to get the results you want.

Example: Using ChatGPT to write a research question

  • Generate three possible research questions for an argumentative high school essay on the following topic: “The long-term impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.”
  • To what extent has the Covid-19 pandemic exacerbated existing social inequalities and what measures can be taken to address these disparities in the long term?
  • How has the Covid-19 pandemic transformed education systems, and what are the potential long-term implications for students’ learning outcomes and educational equity?
  • What lessons can be learned from the Covid-19 pandemic to enhance global preparedness and response to future public health crises, and how can these lessons be effectively implemented in the long term?
  • Based on the second question, develop three further research questions with a specific focus on distance learning.
  • What are the long-term effects of widespread adoption of distance learning during the Covid-19 pandemic on students’ academic performance, motivation, and overall educational outcomes?
  • How has the shift to distance learning impacted the social and emotional well-being of students, and what strategies can be implemented to address any negative consequences in the long term?
  • What are the key factors that contribute to the success of distance learning programs, and how can educational institutions and policymakers ensure equitable access to quality education in the long term, especially for marginalized and underserved student populations?

Once you’ve decided on a research question, you can use ChatGPT to develop an essay outline . This can help keep you on track by giving you a clear idea of what topics you want to discuss and in what order.

Do this by prompting ChatGPT to create an outline for a specific research question, mentioning any topics or points you want to discuss. You can also mention the writing level and the intended length of your essay so that the tool generates an appropriate outline.

You can then refine this by further prompting ChatGPT or editing the outline manually until it meets your requirements.

Examples: Using ChatGPT to generate an essay outline

  • Develop an outline for an argumentative high school essay with the following research question: “What are the long-term effects of widespread adoption of distance learning during the Covid-19 pandemic on students’ academic performance and overall educational outcomes?”The essay will be about 4 pages long.
  • Background information on the Covid-19 pandemic and the shift to distance learning
  • Thesis statement: The widespread adoption of distance learning during the Covid-19 pandemic has had both positive and negative long-term effects on students’ academic performance and overall educational outcomes.
  • Increased flexibility and personalized learning opportunities
  • Access to a wider range of resources and educational materials
  • Development of self-directed learning skills
  • Critiques and limitations of previous studies
  • Lack of face-to-face interaction and reduced social engagement
  • Increased potential for distractions and lack of structure
  • Technological barriers and unequal access to resources
  • Examination of studies and data on academic achievement during distance learning
  • Analysis of long-term effects on educational attainment and future opportunities
  • Discussion of potential implications for college admissions and career readiness
  • Strategies for promoting student engagement and motivation in distance learning
  • Importance of teacher-student communication and support
  • Addressing technological disparities and ensuring equitable access to resources
  • Recap of the main points discussed
  • Emphasize the need for further research and long-term planning to optimize distance learning experiences
  • Restate the thesis and provide a final thought on the potential long-term effects of distance learning on students’ academic performance and overall educational outcomes

Once you know the scope of your essay, you can find relevant primary and secondary sources to support your argument.

However, we don’t recommend prompting ChatGPT to generate a list of sources as it occasionally makes mistakes (like listing nonexistent sources). Instead, it’s a good idea to use ChatGPT to get suggestions for the types of sources relevant to your essay and track them down using a credible research database or your institution’s library.

When you have found relevant sources, use a specialized tool like the Scribbr Citation Generator to cite them in your essay.

Example: Using ChatGPT to find sources

  • What types of sources can I use to write an essay on the following research question?”What are the long-term effects of widespread adoption of distance learning during the Covid-19 pandemic on students’ academic performance and overall educational outcomes?”
  • Academic Journals and Research Articles: Look for scholarly articles and research studies published in peer-reviewed academic journals. These sources often provide in-depth analysis, empirical evidence, and statistical data on the long-term effects of distance learning.
  • Educational and Government Reports: Reports published by educational institutions, government agencies, or educational organizations can offer valuable insights into the impact of distance learning on academic performance and educational outcomes. These reports may include surveys, case studies, and data analysis specific to the Covid-19 pandemic and distance learning.
  • Official Websites and Publications: Explore the official websites of educational institutions, education ministries, or educational technology companies. They often publish articles, white papers, or research findings related to distance learning and its effects on students’ academic performance.
  • Expert Interviews or Opinion Pieces: Seek out interviews or opinion pieces from experts in the field of education, distance learning, or pedagogy. These sources can provide valuable perspectives and insights on the long-term effects of distance learning on students’ educational outcomes.
  • Online Databases and Digital Libraries: Utilize online databases and digital libraries such as JSTOR, Google Scholar, or academic databases provided by your educational institution. These platforms offer a wide range of scholarly articles, research papers, and publications that can support your arguments.
  • Surveys and Studies Conducted by Educational Institutions: Some schools or universities may have conducted their own surveys or studies to evaluate the impact of distance learning on students. Check if your educational institution has published any research findings or survey results that are relevant to your topic.

During your writing process, you can use ChatGPT as a summarizing tool to condense text to its essential ideas or as a paraphraser to rephrase text in clear, accessible language. Using ChatGPT in these ways can help you to understand complex material, express your own ideas more clearly, and avoid repetition.

Simply input the relevant text and prompt the tool to summarize or paraphrase it. Alternatively, you can use Scribbr’s free text summarizer and Scribbr’s free paraphrasing tool , which are specifically designed for these purposes.

Example: Using ChatGPT to summarize/paraphrase

  • Paraphrase the following text using clear language:”Engaging in an extensive examination of the intricate interplay between remote instructional methods and academic achievement necessitates consideration of diverse factors, including the pedagogical efficacy of virtual platforms, the socioemotional ramifications of reduced face-to-face interactions, the equitable accessibility of technological resources, and the potential long-lasting implications for students’ educational trajectories and future opportunities.”
  • To thoroughly explore the connection between remote teaching methods and academic success, it is crucial to take into account various factors. These factors include evaluating how well virtual platforms support effective teaching, understanding the impact of limited in-person interactions on students’ emotional well-being, ensuring fair access to technology resources, and recognizing the potential long-term effects on students’ educational paths and future prospects.

Once you’ve written your essay, you can prompt ChatGPT to provide feedback and recommend improvements.

You can indicate how the tool should provide feedback (e.g., “Act like a university professor examining papers”) and include the specific points you want to receive feedback on (e.g., consistency of tone, clarity of argument, appropriateness of evidence).

While this is not an adequate substitute for an experienced academic supervisor, it can help you with quick preliminary feedback.

You can also use ChatGPT to check grammar mistakes. However, ChatGPT sometimes misses errors and on rare occasions may even introduce new grammatical mistakes. We suggest using a tool like Scribbr’s free grammar checker , which is designed specifically for this purpose. Or, for more in-depth feedback, try Scribbr’s proofreading and editing service .

Example: Using ChatGPT for feedback

  • Feedback the above text with regard to consistency of tone, clarity of argument, appropriateness of evidence, and coherence of structure.
  • Clarity of Argument: The argument could be further clarified by explicitly connecting the discussed factors to their impact on academic performance. For example, explicitly stating how the proficiency of virtual platforms and equitable access to technology affect academic performance would strengthen the clarity of the argument.
  • Appropriateness of Evidence: The evidence provided is generally appropriate and relevant. To enhance the strength of the evidence, consider incorporating specific examples, research studies, or statistics that directly support the discussed factors and their impact on academic performance. This would provide stronger evidence for the claims made.
  • Coherence of Structure: The structure of the text is coherent, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing different factors, and a conclusion. To improve coherence, consider adding transitional phrases or sentences at the beginning or end of paragraphs to facilitate the smooth flow of ideas between paragraphs. This would enhance the overall structure and make it easier for the reader to follow the argument.

Overall, the text demonstrates a consistent tone, a clear argument, appropriate evidence, and a coherent structure. Clarifying the argument by explicitly connecting the factors to their impact, incorporating stronger evidence, and adding transitional phrases for better coherence would further enhance the text’s effectiveness. Note Passing off AI-generated text as your own work is generally considered plagiarism (or at least academic dishonesty ) and may result in an automatic fail and other negative consequences . An AI detector may be used to detect this offense.

Yes, you can use ChatGPT to summarize text . This can help you understand complex information more easily, summarize the central argument of your own paper, or clarify your research question.

You can also use Scribbr’s free text summarizer , which is designed specifically for this purpose.

Yes, you can use ChatGPT to paraphrase text to help you express your ideas more clearly, explore different ways of phrasing your arguments, and avoid repetition.

However, it’s not specifically designed for this purpose. We recommend using a specialized tool like Scribbr’s free paraphrasing tool , which will provide a smoother user experience.

No, it’s not a good idea to do so in general—first, because it’s normally considered plagiarism or academic dishonesty to represent someone else’s work as your own (even if that “someone” is an AI language model). Even if you cite ChatGPT , you’ll still be penalized unless this is specifically allowed by your university . Institutions may use AI detectors to enforce these rules.

Second, ChatGPT can recombine existing texts, but it cannot really generate new knowledge. And it lacks specialist knowledge of academic topics. Therefore, it is not possible to obtain original research results, and the text produced may contain factual errors.

However, you can usually still use ChatGPT for assignments in other ways, as a source of inspiration and feedback.

write a research report on chatgpt

If you’re an academic, you’ve probably spent a lot of time planning and writing research papers. It’s a fine art, and one that requires a fair amount of skill, precision and preparation. But whether you’re an old master in the field, or a rookie embarking on your first serious research paper, there are tools that can help you to simplify the planning stages and organise your thoughts more effectively.

One of those tools is the (in)famous ChatGPT , and it’s this that we’ll be focusing on in our article. In the right hands, ChatGPT can become a powerful research tool that will make your paper-writing that little bit easier. So sit back, relax, and discover our tips and tricks for using ChatGPT to write a research paper.

What is ChatGPT?

Just in case you don’t already know, ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence tool developed by OpenAI that can help you with your research. It uses natural language processing to understand what you’re looking for and provide you with relevant information. You can ask it questions, and it will provide you with answers in a conversational style, as well as offer sources to back up its information.

One of the biggest advantages of ChatGPT is that it can save you time. Instead of spending hours searching for sources, you can simply ask ChatGPT for help. This can bring you a reliable list of sources for further investigation fairly quickly. It’s crucial to note however that the AI shouldn’t be exploited to do the actual writing of the paper for you. This could see you accused of plagiarism or misconduct, and besides, as a researcher, you’re probably rightfully proud of your ability to write a compelling paper.

Another advantage of ChatGPT is that it’s always available (even when libraries or other sources of information might be inaccessible) so you can work on your research paper at any time of day or night.

Interested in learning more about how AI programs like ChatGPT are changing the academic landscape? Listen to Oxford researcher Samantha-Kaye Johnston’s views from the frontline in this exciting episode of The Research Beat podcast.

The benefits of using ChatGPT to write a research paper

There are many benefits to using ChatGPT for research papers. Firstly, as we mentioned earlier, it can save you time . A slow drag of several hours looking for specific sources can be reduced to just a few minutes with the AI’s help.

Secondly, it can help you find sources that you might not have found otherwise . ChatGPT has access to a wide range of sources, including academic journals and books.

Thirdly, it can help you organise your research . ChatGPT can provide you with a summary of the information you’ve gathered, making it easier to analyse and integrate into your research paper.

How to use ChatGPT to write a research paper – a step by step guide

  • Start by creating a list of questions that you want to answer in your research paper.
  • Open ChatGPT and ask it one of the questions on your list, for example, ‘What is the critical history of feminist literature in Europe?’
  • ChatGPT will provide you with a list of sources to check out.
  • Read through the sources and take notes on the information that is relevant to your research question.
  • Repeat steps 2-4 for each question on your list.
  • Once you’ve gathered all of your information, organise it into an outline for your research paper.
  • Use the information you’ve gathered to write your research paper.

Working with your sources

Once you have your sources in order, you might want to use prompts to get help from ChatGPT with other parts of the writing process. A prompt is a specific instruction to the AI that can give you tailored information or responses. For example, if you’re struggling to understand part of another research paper, you could use the following prompt:

‘Please explain the following paragraphs in simple words. I am having trouble understanding (insert concept here).’

Input the prompt along with the relevant passage from the source, and ChatGPT will provide a summary that could help you to unlock your understanding of the tricky concept.

Writing tips and tricks for using ChatGPT

When using ChatGPT to write a research paper, it’s important to keep a few things in mind. Firstly, make sure that you’re using reliable sources . ChatGPT can provide you with a list of sources, but it’s up to you to determine which ones are reliable.

Secondly, make sure that you’re paraphrasing the information you’ve gathered in your own words . You don’t want to cheat or be accused of it.

Finally, make sure that you’re using the information you’ve gathered to answer your research questions . Everything you uncover through ChatGPT should be used to feed your own understanding and improve the quality and precision of your answers.

Common mistakes to avoid when using ChatGPT to write a research paper

While ChatGPT is an excellent tool for research papers, there are some common mistakes to avoid:

  • Crucially, don’t rely too heavily on ChatGPT. It’s essential to do some of your research on your own and use ChatGPT to supplement it.
  • Don’t forget to cite your sources correctly. Just because ChatGPT provided you with the information doesn’t mean that you don’t need to cite it. Moreover, ChatGPT cannot actually produce academic citations for you.
  • Always remember to proofread your research paper carefully, especially if you’ve used AI elements to construct it.

ChatGPT vs. traditional research methods

While traditional research methods have their advantages and always will, ChatGPT, as we’ve seen, has some of its own. We think one of the best uses for AI programs like ChatGPT is to accelerate parts of the paper-writing process that would otherwise take hours. If you can use the AI to produce a list of interesting and relevant sources, then you can get to work quickly as an academic, studying and analysing those sources to determine their value within your paper. In general, if you approach ChatGPT with an attitude of maintaining quality and integrity, then it can only enhance your work.

Final Thoughts

ChatGPT is everywhere at the moment, and while it has stirred up a great deal of controversy thanks to its implications for academic integrity, it can be an excellent tool for helping to write research papers . The key is using it correctly, and not relying too heavily on it. Focusing on how it can enhance your already-sharp academic writing skills will allow you to save time, find plenty of valuable sources, and organise your paper’s structure more effectively. And that’s how to use ChatGPT to write a research paper!

ChatGPT is not the only AI tool that can help with these parts of the paper-writing puzzle. If you want to listen to academic papers, break them down into digestible pieces and freely take notes on them, then Audemic is waiting for you. Try it for free today!

Keep striving, researchers! ✨

Using ChatGPT might be complex; thus, we are here to help you. Below are steps to create an account and write reports and theses or dissertations.

1. Setting Up ChatGPT

Now that you know ChatGPT and its benefits associated with reports, theses, and dissertation writing, it’s time to set up a ChatGPT account.

The first thing to do is to visit the official website of OpenAI’s artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT.

After successfully landing on the official website of ChatGPT, you’ll see a login and sign-up option. You need to login in using your login credentials and progress further. However, if you do not have an account, click sign up, add an email, and create a password. Moreover, you’ll need to add your personal data, i.e., your date of birth, and verify your mobile number.

How to use ChatGPT to write a report

Setting up the ChatGPT account is easier than using it. Below we’ll guide you thoroughly on how to write a report using ChatGPT.

Setting up the Parameters

The first thing you must do is set parameters. What are the parameters? Parameters are framework or structure. You need to set up the report's parameters as they help control the report’s content and use other reports’ material in arguments. You need to tell ChatGPT where to start and let it know the limits of your report. In short, you need to provide ChatGPT with a structure under which it should generate your report.

Creating an Outline

Create an outline for your report. The outline may start with an introduction, having headings, bullet points, paragraphs, and more. You must provide an accurate outline to enable ChatGPT to write your report. This ensures that your report covers all the aspects in a good flow and all the required information. Without an outline, chatGPT may be unable to write it in a flow or may write something unnecessary for your report.

Writing the Report

The last thing is to ask ChatGPT to write the report for you. You need to set parameters, provide an outline, write a good prompt, and wait for ChatGPT to generate the report for you for a minute or two.

Topic: Impact of remote work on employee productivity

Purpose: To understand and examine the impact of remote work on the productivity of employees with findings and recommendations.

Use ChatGPT To Write A Research Paper: Chat GPT For Scientific Papers

Producing academic writing can be daunting, but with ChatGPT, OpenAI’s advanced AI language model, the process becomes more accessible and efficient.

Here, learn how ChatGPT transforms the traditional approach to writing research papers, offering innovative solutions from structuring outlines to crafting intricate arguments.

Whether you’re a seasoned researcher or a novice writer, discover how ChatGPT’s capabilities can enhance your research process, ensuring a comprehensive and well-articulated paper.

Use ChatGPT To Write A Scientific Research Paper

Step 1: General Introduction

Imagine you’re about to write a scientific research paper. You have a specific topic in mind but are struggling with how to structure your paper or what essential points to include in your introduction.

This is where ChatGPT, OpenAI’s powerful AI language model, steps in to assist in the writing process.

Start by asking ChatGPT to create an outline. For instance, you could provide ChatGPT with your research question and any relevant details about your study.

The AI will generate an outline that covers key aspects of your introduction, helping you to organize your thoughts and structure your paper effectively.

write a research report on chatgpt

After you’ve brainstormed and provided the necessary prompts, ChatGPT can help draft an initial version of your introduction. Remember, the output generated by ChatGPT may vary, and it’s essential to use ChatGPT in conjunction with your own expertise.

For example, you might tell ChatGPT to write an introduction for a paper on the impact of a certain technology in healthcare. ChatGPT can generate text based on your prompt, providing insights into:

  • Existing research,
  • Gaps in the literature, and
  • The significance of your study.

This initial draft can serve as a valuable foundation for your research paper.

Some prompts that you can use include:

  • Develop an introduction that captures the readers’ attention and provides a concise overview of the research topic: [research topic].
  • Compose an introductory paragraph that effectively introduces the readers to the topic at hand: [research topic]. Provide background information, and context for the research.
  • Create an introduction that sets the stage for an academic article centered around [research topic]. Highlight its rationals, and the structure of the article.

Step 2: Problem Statement

When you use ChatGPT to write a research paper, especially for crafting a problem statement, you begin by providing a clear prompt.

This includes outlining your research question and any specific details about your topic. ChatGPT’s AI language model then processes this information to generate a concise and coherent problem statement.

For instance, if your research paper is on the environmental impact of urban development, you would ask ChatGPT to focus on this specific topic.

The AI can assist by generating text that highlights existing research gaps, the significance of the study, and why addressing this particular issue is vital.

ChatGPT can help structure your paper, creating an outline that seamlessly leads from the problem statement to other sections of your paper.

Remember, the content generated by ChatGPT should be used as a starting point. It’s crucial to review and edit this to ensure originality and accuracy. Proofreading the paper for grammar and making necessary revisions is a must.

Step 3: Research Question :

Writing research questions for your paper can seem daunting, but with ChatGPT, you can streamline this critical part of the writing process. You can start by asking ChatGPT to brainstorm ideas specific to your topic.

Say your research paper is on climate change’s effects on agriculture. Tell ChatGPT, “Generate research questions about the impact of climate change on crop yield.”

ChatGPT’s output will include various questions, such as “How does increased temperature affect wheat production in the Midwest?” These prompts can spark further ideas and help you refine your research objectives.

How to Use ChatGPT to Write a Research Paper

Using ChatGPT to Write a Research Paper

All these tasks that would have taken you hours, maybe even days, and sometimes longer, can now take just a few minutes or even shorter when you use ChatGPT.

Today I want to talk about the top things that ChatGPT can help you with when it comes to research papers so that you can write your paper much faster.

Before we dive into the specific tips and show you how to use ChatGPT when writing research papers, let me preface by saying that it is just a tool and is limited in many ways. It’s not good enough yet to replace you and replace the researcher in writing the research paper.

You’ve got to understand that you can’t just tell ChatGPT to write a couple of paragraphs for you and then use it as ChatGPT writes it and then submit it. It’s just not going to work like that. Plus, it would kind of be plagiarism although AI isn’t human.

So what you’ve got to do is remember about the limitations of the technology:

  • One main limitation is that it was trained on data up to January 2022, which means that more recent papers and more recent data are not going to be there.
  • Another crucial limitation is that it doesn’t pull the references for most things. So when you’re writing the literature review, ChatGPT can write paragraphs for you real quick, but there are no references for them, and you can’t really pull the references for it.
  • And remember: what ChatGPT writes isn’t necessarily perfect or good enough to be published in a top journal. You will most likely have to take ChatGPT text, improve upon it, revise it before you finally submit it.

So, let’s dive in and let’s see exactly how you can accelerate your progress with your research papers using ChatGPT.

How to Write Research Paper Title with ChatGPT

The first thing that we’re gonna do is get ChatGPT to give us some good research paper titles using ChatGPT.

I’m going to copy and paste the abstract that I’ve already got, and then I’m going to tell ChatGPT to suggest a title for a research paper based on this abstract .

Writing Research Paper Title using ChatGPT

Here is the title of the research paper that ChatGPT generated: “ Unmasking the Academic Impersonator: A Multifaceted Investigation into Detecting LLM-Generated Writing ”.

I think ChatGPT’s title is very good.

Now let’s see if ChatGPT can maybe give us some alternative so that we can choose.

ChatGPT message : Can you suggest two additional titles for the research paper based on that same abstract?

ChatGPT Research Paper Titles

Title 2: “ Guardians of Academic Integrity: Unveiling LLM-Generated Content through Dataset, User Study, and Detection Algorithms “.

Title 3: “ Deciphering the Enigma: Insights into Detecting LLM-Generated Academic Writing via Dataset, User Perception, and Advanced Algorithms “.

ChatGPT message : Can you suggest two more titles which will be phrased as questions based on that same abstract?

ChatGPT Research Paper Titles with Questions

Title 4: “ Can Humans Spot the Imposter? Exploring the Challenge of Detecting LLM-Generated Academic Writing “.

Title 5: “ Is AI Outsmarting Academia? Investigating the Detection of LLM-Generated Content in Research Papers “.

So ChatGPT can clearly give you titles. The way to do it is just to paste the abstract and ask ChatGPT to give you titles. An alternative, if you’ve got the whole introduction written, you can also give ChatGPT the introduction, and it will give you good titles as well.

How to Use ChatGPT to Write an Abstract

Now let’s see if ChatGPT can do the reverse.

Can ChatGPT write an abstract based on the title of your paper?

ChatGPT message : Write an abstract for a research paper based on this title.

ChatGPT Research Paper Abstract

The result is really good. It follows the exact structure of an abstract.

How to Write Research Outline with ChatGPT

Now, you can ask ChatGPT to write an outline that includes as many details of your task as possible. For example, I used the title suggested by ChatGPT in the first step.

ChatGPT prompt : Write an outline for a research paper that is [NUMBER] pages long and needs to use [NUMBER] primary sources on this topic: [TITLE]

Write Research Outline with ChatGPT

ChatGPT generated a 33-point outline that details the areas I should cover in my research paper.

How to Write an Introduction Using ChatGPT

We’re going to see if ChatGPT can write an introduction to a research paper.

ChatGPT prompt : Write a [NUMBER] paragraph introduction to a research paper entitled: [TITLE]

Write an Introduction Using ChatGPT

ChatGPT wrote a 4 paragraph introduction and it looks very good again.

Find The Research Gap Using ChatGPT

Now we can get ChatGPT to do is to work on a research gap. This is what many PhD students and researchers do.

Let’s see if ChatGPT can suggest us any good research gaps.

ChatGPT message : Suggest a research gap on the topic of detecting ChatGPT-generated academic writing.

ChatGPT Research Gap

This is really well presented.

Writing a Research Question Using ChatGPT

If you have a research gap, you can just give ChatGPT the research gap, and from that, you can get research questions.

ChatGPT message : Suggest two different research questions based on the following research gap.

ChatGPT Research Question

Both of these research questions are fantastic. And both of them should be investigated.

Making a Research Question More Specific with ChatGPT

A big problem that a lot of people have with research questions or aims is that they are too vague or too general.

What ChatGPT suggests here is pretty good already, but let’s see if it’s capable of making a research question more specific.

ChatGPT message : Make the following research question more specific and precise.

Question #1

ChatGPT Research More Specific Questions #1

Question #2

ChatGPT Research More Specific Questions #2

Right, this is pretty good. This is definitely more specific.

I think ChatGPT can help you to specify your research questions.

If you’re struggling with your aim or research question is too vague, then you can use ChatGPT to make it more specific.

How To Use ChatGPT To Write A Literature Review

You’re just kind of starting out with a topic, and you want to see what are some of the key publications that you should read on that topic just to get yourself started.

Let’s see how ChatGPT can help us accelerate the literature review process.

ChatGPT prompt : I am investigating [TOPIC]. What are the key research papers on this topic I should read?

ChatGPT Literature Review

I have to say that I’m not very impressed. I think the result was affected by the limitations of the data on which the algorithm was trained until 2022.

Nevertheless, you can definitely use ChatGPT to get you the literature that you should start reading.

Writing a Methodology For a Research Paper Using ChatGPT

After reviewing the literature, I ask ChatGPT to suggest the methodology section for the topic. This section will include research approaches and sampling techniques for data collection.

ChatGPT message : Write a research methodology for a research paper based on this title.

ChatGPT Research Paper Methodology

As you can see, ChatGPT can help generate the overall structure of the research methodology.

How to use ChatGPT to summarize a research paper

The last thing which I feel ChatGPT could be very useful in research is asking for summarization.

We can ask ChatGPT to summarize a particular paper or the key takeaways that could be important for us from that paper.

In that way, you can just note it down in a proper way with proper citations, which you could use as a literature review in your research writing or academic writing.

ChatGPT prompt: Can you provide a summary of [PAPER NAME]

ChatGPT Research Paper Summary

Can ChatGPT write research papers?

To answer this question, I turned to ChatGPT, here is its answer:

“I can indeed assist in generating content for research papers, including providing structured information, drafting paragraphs, and even offering suggestions for methodology and analysis. However, it’s crucial to note that while I can generate text based on the input and parameters provided, I lack true understanding, creativity, or original thought. Therefore, while I can help with the mechanical aspects of writing a research paper, the conceptualization, critical analysis, and interpretation of research findings are best left to human researchers who possess domain expertise and critical thinking skills. Ultimately, the quality and validity of a research paper rely on the expertise and integrity of its human authors.”

Using the power of ChatGPT can be transformative for those grappling with the daunting task of writing research papers.

ChatGPT won’t write your research paper for you from scratch, but it can make the writing process much easier.

It gives you some content to work with. And then you can rewrite it in your own words.

You’ve got a starting point now.

How to use ChatGPT to summarize a book, article, or research paper

jada-jones

AI chatbots like ChatGPT can be used to make summarizing long articles, research papers, and books an easier job. If you're tasked with writing a summary for school or work about a body of written text, and you're pinched for time, ChatGPT can help you understand the necessary components.

You should remember that ChatGPT is a tool that can help you further understand a topic, and it may not be in your best interest to have it write your work for you.

Also:   How to make ChatGPT provide sources and citations

If you're a student writing a research paper, someone who is keen to discover more about a lengthy article, or someone who wants to dive into a complicated subject, you can use ChatGPT to simplify the process.

How ChatGPT can create summaries for you

Materials needed : You'll need a device that can connect to the internet, an OpenAI account , and a basic understanding of the article, research paper, or book you want to summarize.

Also:  This AI chatbot can sum up any PDF and answer any question you have about it

The process should take about one to three minutes.

1. Find your article, paper, or book to summarize

If you need ChatGPT to help summarize an article or research paper, find the body of text online and keep it open in a separate tab.

2. Open your web browser and log in to OpenAI

Open your web browser of choice and type in chat.openai.com/chat .

Also: How to use ChatGPT to write Excel formulas

Log in or sign up for an account.

3. Type your request

In the chat box, type in TLDR: followed by the title of the book you want summarized. TLDR stands for too long, didn't read.

Also: How to use ChatGPT: Everything you need to know

You can also ask ChatGPT: "Summarize [book title]."

You cannot paste a URL into ChatGPT. If you do so, you'll get a response explaining that the chatbot cannot access websites. If you want ChatGPT to summarize research, you'll need a basic understanding of the topic to ensure you aren't including inaccurate information in your report.

For example, if you're writing a paper about how twin sibling dynamics affect their marriages, you can ask ChatGPT: "Explain how twin relationships affect their marriages."

Also:   The best AI chatbots: ChatGPT and other noteworthy alternatives

ChatGPT will offer you a few bullet points of both positive and negative effects a twin bond can have on the twins' marriages. You'll still need to read key points of the research, as ChatGPT won't provide you with specific statistics or scientific conclusions. But ChatGPT can help you understand the context surrounding the research you're interested in.

If you're having trouble comprehending specific passages in an article, book, or research paper, you can copy parts of the text and paste them into ChatGPT.

Think of this method as reshuffling the words you're currently reading to help you make more sense of the text in front of you.

This is an accurate summary of 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay'.

What are ChatGPT's limitations?

If you're using ChatGPT to summarize an article, book, or piece of research, keep in mind that ChatGPT isn't aware of events that occurred after September 2021.

Also:   4 things Claude AI can do that ChatGPT can't

ChatGPT is a large language model that uses queues and millions of data points to mimic human responses. This form of mimicry is why ChatGPT will answer questions even when it doesn't output the correct answer. So, make sure you're not using any information from ChatGPT without fact-checking it.

If you try to get around this obstacle and provide ChatGPT with an article that contains information post-2021, it might hallucinate. Here, I asked the chatbot to summarize an article about a new app I wrote about , and it made up a few details.

Lemon8 is a new app from TikTok's parent company, ByteDance. Although the TikTok trend may exist, that's not what the article is about.

Can ChatGPT summarize a PDF?

Copying and pasting a URL into ChatGPT won't yield you the best results. If there is a specific paragraph or sentence you're struggling with, you can copy and paste it into ChatGPT and ask it to explain it to you. Still, it's best to read the PDF and use the chatbot as a summary tool and not as an educator.

Also:  How to use ChatGPT to write code

If you're looking for an AI chatbot that you can regularly rely on to give you an accurate summary of a PDF, consider using ChatPDF . You can summarize up to three PDFs of up to 120 pages per day, and an upgraded plan is available for $5 per month.

Can ChatGPT summarize an email thread?

Sort of. If you want to copy and paste every single email, ChatGPT can summarize the thread's contents for you. It would be more helpful to scan an email thread yourself and ask ChatGPT to help you write a response based on the key points you know about the conversation.

Editor's note: We've added additional context to the step concerning ChatGPT summarizing articles by URL.

The Artificial Intelligence (AI) natural language model ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer), often referred to as ChatGPT-4, has a wide range of possible uses in the fields of research, business, academia, health, and similar fields. This language model can accomplish a number of academic jobs that were previously completed by people, taking a significant amount of time and effort. The purpose of the article is to investigate ChatGPT’s potential opportunities and challenges in academia. To attain this objective, a review of relevant literature and online resources (news, articles, etc.) was carried out. The noticing-collecting-thinking approach was adopted to explore and categorize all observed concerns. The outcome of this study reveals that research, education, personal skill development, and social aspects constitute the four broad perspectives that articulate the opportunities and constraints of ChatGPT in academia. For instance, from the  education perspective, ChatGPT can help students have a personalized learning experience. On the other hand, it might provide false information as well as lack the ability to generate responses on its own because those responses depend on training datasets, which may contain errors. Similarly, from the point of view of the personal skill development , this model may impair a person’s capacity for critical thought and content production; while providing reading and writing practice sessions and relevant content, it can improve a person’s language proficiency.

1 Introduction

ChatGPT is an artificially intelligent chatbot initially based on GPT-3, a Natural Language Processing (NLP) model based on deep learning algorithms [ 1 , 2 ]. GPT-3 is a multi-modal machine learning model trained on a large text data set to generate human-like text [ 3 ]. This Large Language Model (LLM) can perform several tasks like language modeling, language translation, and generating text for applications or chatbots (i.e.: ChatGPT) with more reliability and creativity. ChatGPT was developed by a San Francisco-based Artificial Intelligence (AI) research and deployment organization OpenAI [ 4 , 5 ]. Currently, ChatGPT is freely accessible through the OpenAI web portal. Recently, OpenAI has launched a new version GPT-4 which can work with images also [ 6 ]. GPT-4 is more powerful with lots of new features and fewer mistakes than the previous version. This model can create, modify, and collaborate with users on creative and technical writing assignments, such as music composition, scripting films, and adapting to a user’s writing tone [ 7 ]. The objective of developing ChatGPT was to assist users as a dialogic agent in natural language providing helpful and accurate information like customer service, chatbot, and alike [ 1 ]. For this, ChatGPT was trained with a massive dataset sourced from the internet. This dataset includes a wide range of text genres, such as news, articles, scientific papers, social media posts, etc. in different topics and languages [ 8 ]. The exact size and composition of the training dataset can be estimated to be on the order of hundreds of gigabytes or more [ 9 ]. The goal of the training process is to learn patterns and relationships within the text data that allow the model to generate human-like responses to various questions and prompts [ 10 ].

Several existing LLMs include BERT [ 11 ], Transformer-XL [ 12 ], Megatron [ 13 ], Jurassic-1 [ 14 ], ELECTRA (Efficiently Learning an Encoder that Classifies Token Replacements Accurately) [ 15 ], Gopher [ 16 ], etc. These LLMs were developed to understand and generate natural language [ 17 ]. All of these existing language models can analyze task-specific data, generate a response, and fine-tune the generated output. These models can be instructed to generate outputs according to a user inquiry. These previous LLMs were only able to handle one-time probing and also generate responses with a large variation in case of similar instructions [ 18 ]. Usually, LLMs like GPT-3 and GPT-4 can work with more than a hundred billion parameters.

Being a smart language model with an IQ score of 147 [ 19 ], ChatGPT can perform a wide range of functions in the academic sector, for example, generate, alter, and optimize creative and technical writings based on the context and mode (formal, informal, etc.) by enhancing the quality, interactivity, and accessibility to education. On the other hand, ChatGPT can create some challenges in the academic sector also including generating biased output, difficulties in ensuring academic integrity, reducing individual writing skills, having limited abilities being a machine, etc. Additionally, there may be concerns about reducing personalization and the potential for job loss in academia. As such, the motivation of this research is to address the implications (positive and negative) of ChatGPT in the academic domain.

Since academia is continuously progressive, adapting innovative technologies may enhance the teaching and learning experience significantly. By investigating the challenges and opportunities of ChatGPT in academia, this research aims to contribute to improving the quality of education with effective and efficient use of this AI model. Therefore, the objective of this research is to explore the insights of ChatGPT in academia in terms of opportunities and challenges assisting students, teachers, and researchers. To attain this objective, data collected from different sources were analyzed following the noticing-collecting-thinking model. Then, the impacts of ChatGPT in academia were derived as opportunities and challenges.

The significance of this study is that it aims to clarify the impacts of using ChatGPT and similar AI-based natural language models in learning environments. The purpose of the research is to significantly contribute to the state of knowledge on AI in education by investigating possible benefits, and concerns of this technology in educational contexts. Again, this study intends to fill a theoretical gap in the literature by focusing on the practical implications of ChatGPT in educational environments. Although a lot of research has been conducted regarding the general applications of AI in education, there is a lack of in-depth exploration into the specific challenges and opportunities offered by ChatGPT, a state-of-the-art language model, in the academic setting.

The rest of the article is organized as follows. A review of the related literature is presented in Sect.  2 . Next, in Sect.  3 , the methodology adopted in this research is presented. Then, the results are discussed in Sect.  4 as the architecture of ChatGPT (Subsect.  4.1 ), the opportunities (Subsect.  4.2 ), and the challenges (Subsect.  4.3 ) of ChatGPT in the academic domain. Finally, Sect.  5 concludes this article along with future work and limitations.

2 Literature review

Several existing research has focused on outlining the impact of ChatGPT in the academic domain. For example, Lund and Wang [ 2 ] presented different contributing concerns of ChatGPT (i.e.: language processing activities, research and project implementations, ethics and privacy issues, etc. ) in terms of questions and answers. In another article; Curtis [ 20 ] briefly explained the strengths (improvement in education, training, clinical care, and research) and limitations (i.e.: ethical concerns, fake referencing) of this AI model in academic publishing. In another empirical study, AlAfnan et al. [ 21 ] investigated the challenges and opportunities that may arise due to ChatGPT in the case of student-teacher communication, business writing, and composition courses. After 30 test sessions, it was found that this AI model is used mostly to seek answers to theory-based questions and generate practical ideas. The challenge was to differentiate between the AI-generated text and human written test by the instructors which has a greater chance of deriving incorrect course outcomes. Meanwhile, Kasneci et al. [ 22 ] presented the benefits and challenges of LLMs mostly focusing on ChatGPT in education from a teaching and learning perspective while Cotton et al. [ 23 ] found enhanced student engagement, collaboration, and accessibility as opportunities; and several concerns like academic honesty and plagiarism were raised due to ChatGPT in the context of academic integrity. In another research, Fuchs [ 24 ] discussed the opportunities and challenges of ChatGPT in higher education. The opportunities included personalized learning, on-demand support, and independent working ability; and challenges included insufficient research data, over-reliance on the bot, biases in the experimental result, and so on. Sullivan et al. [ 25 ] conducted a content analysis on available Western news articles to derive the impact of ChatGPT on academic integrity and student learning. Whalen and Mouza [ 26 ] examined the impact of AI in K-16 education. ChatGPT can be used to automate the aspects of teaching and learning, be augmented as a teaching assistant, as a language tool, as a student monitoring tool, and alike.

Two studies conducted by Xames and Shefa [ 27 ], and Donmez et al. [ 28 ] presented the challenges and opportunities of ChatGPT in publication and research. Xames found that opportunities like ChatGPT may generate ideas, synthesize existing works, identify context for the researchers; check article quality, format, plagiarism, and eligibility for the editors; and evaluate the novelty, quality, clarity, conciseness, coherence, and even the strength and weakness of an article for the reviewers. On the other hand, Donmez et al. outlined the implication of ChatGPT in finding, checking, the research question; determining the research design; collecting data; and finalizing the title, etc. with examples. Rahman et al. [ 29 ] highlighted the application of ChatGPT in academic research considering research articles, websites, and visual and numerical artifacts with practical examples.

From the medical point of view, Alser et al. [ 30 ] depicted the involvement of ChatGPT in medical research like authorship, plagiarism, and biased result generation. In another research, Homolak [ 31 ] derived the opportunities and risks of ChatGPT in medical, science, and academic publishing. This AI model may perform the tasks of physician and scientist partially but that is not sufficient to replace the involved persons.

Yu [ 32 ] presented the stages of the revolution of AI to ChatGPT. He depicted the risks of ChatGPT for the students with statistics. For example, 89% of college students in America use this AI model to complete their assignments. Also, teachers in North America are trying hard to motivate students to write articles on their own. But to be frank, these risks are increasing day by day since it is almost impossible to differentiate between an AI-generated text and a human text through reading only. In another research, Quintans et al. [ 33 ] outlined some open research questions related to academia raised due to ChatGPT.

From the related literature review, it can be shown that several existing works have focused on deriving the strengths and weaknesses of ChatGPT in the context of academic integrity, teaching and learning environment, research and publication, and the like. None to very few articles combined all these as their research area. So, extensive research with elaborated and extended visualization of the impact of ChatGPT in academia including education, research, publication, and academic integrity is required.

3 Methodology

To explore the opportunities and challenges of ChatGPT in academia, the related online resources (news, reports, etc.) and articles (published in journals, conferences, or preprints) were searched and selected from scholarly databases like ACM, Scopus, Google Scholar, etc. and Google search engine. Table 1 shows a summary of the sources for data collection.

The sources were categorized into seven categories: academic journals, preprint, conference proceedings, books, technical reports, news articles, blogs, and website articles. The selected literature was then reviewed and analyzed following the noticing-collecting-thinking model [ 34 ]. This data analysis model is generally used for the complex and rigorous practice of qualitative data analysis to construct a taxonomic structure into three phases—noticing, collecting, and thinking [ 34 , 35 ]. This structured and comprehensive data analysis approach makes this model creative, resourceful, and flexible. The first phase encourages one to observe and pay close attention to fine details to develop relevant information. Next, in the collecting phase, findings from the previous phase specifically relevant information are gathered systematically. This includes a more comprehensive analysis of data from a variety range of sources and perspectives to facilitate the next phase. Finally, information is interpreted intelligently and critically considering different viewpoints. This approach is different from other qualitative data analysis approaches since this approach can be adopted in various contexts like research, problem-solving, and decision-making; and integrating noticing-collecting-thinking a topic or subject can be well understood before concluding. As such, adopting this approach for this research allowed a recurring process to reveal the specific concerns (data related to the opportunities and challenges of ChatGPT) from the literature. Again, for extensive analysis, noticing and following by interpretation must consider any concern as an opportunity or as a challenge. Thus, the noticing-collecting-thinking model is adopted here for data collection and analysis.

figure 1

Coding for opportunities and challenges from the reviewed literature

In Noticing phase, the selected literature was meticulously reviewed and tried to notice if any concern is related to the opportunities and challenges of ChatGPT in the case of academia. In the Collecting phase, all the noticed concerns (opportunities and challenges) were collected and organized in a tabular format. An example of coding the concerns is shown in Fig.  1 . For example, the information "ChatGPT can be used as virtual mentors, voice assistants, innovative content, smart classrooms, automatic assessments, and personalized learning" (serial 01)—was collected from research conducted by Shidiq [ 45 ]. From this information, the colored portion was marked as codes: i.e. 'virtual mentors, voice assistants’ and 'personalized learning' were marked as 'personalized learning'. Thus, codes were extracted from each information and accumulated for the next phase. All the listed concerns were analyzed to highlight the opportunities and challenges in Thinking phase. Each concern was labeled as a challenge or opportunity according to its impact on academia. And finally, a total of 21 opportunities and 16 challenges were found. Then, similar opportunities and challenges were grouped into four broader themes (research, education, personal skill development, and social). While grouping revealed concerns (data), a set of criteria was considered that could differentiate the concerns as similar or correlated following the Iterative Categorization approach [ 46 ]. Also, these criteria could distinguish the categories one from another. This development of categories organizes data through a variety of different divisions. This process was iterated several times unless the authors reached a consensus level about which information (opportunities and challenges) could be considered final.

Apart from analyzing the related literature and online resources, the ChatGPT application was explored by providing several questions and the responses generated by ChatGPT were analyzed to reveal its opportunities and challenges in academia as well.

4 Result and analysis

This section briefly discusses the findings of the research adopting the noticing-collecting-thinking model. Firstly, the architecture of ChatGPT is briefly described. Then, the opportunities and challenges of this model are presented respectively.

4.1 ChatGPT architecture

figure 2

The working process of ChatGPT

The working process of ChatGPT is depicted in Fig.  2 [ 47 ]. ChatGPT combines big data, large computing power, and algorithms to act as an intelligent model [ 32 ]. Initially, this model was trained on a massive instruct dataset generated by OpenAI [ 48 ] with numerous parameters [ 49 ] through supervised learning [ 50 ].

During the Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) phase, human AI trainers performed conversations with this model as both a user and an AI assistant. So, this model is able to identify the patterns of input data by determining the statistical structure within the data [ 40 ]. To generation process of the reward model of RLHF was repeated several times. The conversations in the initial training phase were considered as comparison data. For this, one randomly selected model-generated message was sampled to some alternative responses and all these samples were ranked by AI trainers. After that, the model was fine-tuned through these reward models.

Interaction with ChatGPT can be divided into Query and Response. Generally, a user can make a Query to the ChatGPT. This query is directly processed by the GPT-4. GPT-4 was developed following the transformer architecture [ 39 ] which is highly appropriate for handling long data sequences [ 36 ]. The multi-layer transformer network consists of several small circuitry sets each having a different purpose. There are two types of circuitry networks in a transformer architecture. The first one is the Feed Forward network which is responsible for extracting information from the token fed into it and processing the information. Another type of network is Multi-Head Attention circuitry which is designed for Encoder/Decoder/ Encoder-Decoder self-attention. In the case of encoder and decoder multi-head attention circuitry queries, keys and values are calculated from the encoder and decoder states respectively. For encode-decoder multi-head attention, the queries are computed from the decoder state; keys and values are computed from encoder states. The output generation circuitry generates the probable outputs and then the output data are fine-tuned. After that, ChatGPT is instructed by GPT-4 to respond. Finally, ChatGPT interacts with a human by providing a human-like response through the conversational interface. After ChatGPT is publicly available, this model is still being learned through conversations with global users. As such, all the conversation data are combined with the existing dataset and used for training the GPT-4.

4.2 Opportunities of ChatGPT

In the field of academia, ChatGPT may have several potential opportunities and applications. These can be divided into four broad categories (Fig.  3 ):

figure 3

The opportunities of ChatGPT in academia

figure 4

ChatGPT provided a list of articles related to 'accessibility investigation'

figure 5

ChatGPT suggested innovative ways to enhance biometric authentication

Research : Since ChatGPT is a highly advanced AI language model, it can make significant contributions to the research domain by assisting researchers in various tasks and by facilitating new discoveries. For example,

Facilitate research activities: ChatGPT can be used as a tool for researchers for example, in the case of NLP, ChatGPT may assist in testing and upgrading the state-of-the-art in language understanding, generation, translation, classification, and categorization, etc [ 37 , 51 ]. This model is also able to identify different parts of speech, entities (like a person, organization, location, etc.), and sentiment (positive, negative, neutral) for a sentence [ 51 ].

ChatGPT can provide up-to-date information on emerging technologies and their applications, making it easier for individuals to conduct research in these rapidly changing fields. This model can also offer a more cost-effective and efficient solution in some cases [ 8 ]. Figure 4 shows a list of articles suggested on a query for a related research paper to a topic.

Promote creativity and innovation: By automating the repetitive and troublesome tasks, ChatGPT can assist the researchers as such ChatGPT may assist to collect data, reviewing the literature, and synthesizing data that helps the researchers to contribute more in creative and higher level tasks [ 52 , 53 ]. Again, this model can help with novel and unique ideas/ ways of thinking. An example of this scenario is presented in Fig.  5 . A question was asked about how the performance of biometric authentication can be enhanced. ChatGPT suggested implementing adaptive authentication as a solution.

Compared to other language models, firstly, ChatGPT is trained on larger and more diverse data sets to adapt a broader range of human language patterns [ 54 ]. Second, ChatGPT is more context-aware in case of a conversation which helps to generate more relevant and accurate responses to a set of context information [ 55 ]. Finally, ChatGPT is still being trained through the queries and responses. So, this model is updated (with new data and algorithms) to generate innovative responses.

Improve data analysis and interpretation: The text summarizing capability of ChatGPT can help researchers with a better understanding of existing knowledge on a specific topic. ChatGPT can analyze large data sets refined from a large number of texts without human involvement [ 56 ] which in turn may produce interesting patterns that can be difficult to reveal through traditional approaches to data analysis.

Provide additional resources: ChatGPT can provide users with additional relevant information and resources on a particular topic [ 52 ] which may benefit in pursuing academic research and projects.

Education and knowledge retrieval : ChatGPT can be used as an educational tool to assist students as well as teachers in retrieving knowledge and information:

Enhance collaboration and peer learning: ChatGPT’s sophisticated language processing abilities can facilitate cross-field collaboration that may enable students from diverse disciplines to communicate and collaborate more effectively [ 22 ] The model’s ability to answer questions and provide information can encourage knowledge sharing and peer-to-peer learning among students. ChatGPT’s language generation features can aid in better communication, promoting the exchange of ideas and knowledge, resulting in more productive collaboration and peer learning.

Support needs for special education: ChatGPT has the capacity to address a broad spectrum of disabilities, including difficulties with reading, writing, and communicating [ 22 ] High-quality education for people with disabilities can be achieved through the implementation of inclusive education practices, the provision of assistive technology and accommodations, and the training of teachers and staff to support students with disabilities [ 57 ]. ChatGPT can allow students to access educational resources like a wide range of subjects, study materials, and online courses. This can help students from low-income, rural, and remote communities and provide them with the same educational opportunities as their peers [ 8 ].

Provide personalized tutoring: Since ChatGPT can reply to user questions, it can offer students a personalized learning experience in their own learning styles and pace [ 24 , 58 , 59 ]. This model is designed to answer the questions asked of it. If any answer is not understood, this model also supports asking again or regenerating the answer [ 60 ]. Also, ChatGPT is also able to offer resources for the professional development of the teachers [ 41 ].

Build ethics and social responsibilities: ChatGPT allows the user access to information related to ethical and socially responsible practices. This will help individuals understand the significance of these practices and how they can apply them in their personal and professional lives.

Automate assessment: ChatGPT is able to grade and generate feedback on a given text which can be utilized as automated scoring and feedback on student assignments and other writings [ 58 ]. This will save time for the teachers and students by providing instant feedback on student assignments [ 61 ].

Improve exam performance: ChatGPT can help students to prepare better for their examinations by exploring a number of related practice problems and solutions [ 60 ].

Personal skill development :

Improve language skills: ChatGPT can play a significant role in improving individual language skills. This model is able to perform machine translation to overcome language barriers and make information more accessible [ 38 ]. Again, this model can improve users’ language proficiency by answering questions and providing practice (speaking and writing) sessions in real time [ 60 ].

Enhance content creation: Since ChatGPT can provide feedback and suggestions on a given text, this feature can improve individual content creation [ 44 ]. ChatGPT can generate written content on a specific topic, helping content creators save time and effort in writing articles, blog posts, and other written materials [ 56 ].

Provide language translation: ChatGPT can translate text from one language to another, providing real-time translation services and improving communication between individuals using different languages [ 38 ]. Moreover, ChatGPT can aid human translators by offering alternate phrasing, defining uncommon terms, and enhancing the accuracy of the translation process.

Improve critical thinking skills: ChatGPT can improve critical thinking skills by providing access to information and generating new topics as well as debates, encouraging reflection and analysis [ 8 ]. Individuals can broaden their knowledge, and evaluate information critically with improved mathematical reasoning and computational skills, leading to more informed decisions.

Reduce digital illiteracy: ChatGPT can reduce digital illiteracy by accessing and utilizing technology and providing individuals with information and support in using it. This helps to increase individuals’ technology skills and confidence, reducing barriers and providing greater opportunities for accessing information and participating in a tech-driven world [ 62 ].

Develop professional skills: ChatGPT can offer additional resources for a specific topic that can be beneficial for career development and job training [ 8 ]. This model can improve professional skills i.e.: project management and teamwork skills by providing relevant information and support to individuals, helping them to understand project management methodologies, best practices, and strategies; presentation skills by giving access to information on effective presentation methods, providing constructive feedback and recommendations [ 63 ].

Help and support :

Provide student service: ChatGPT allows for quicker and more efficient support to students by offering pre-written responses to questions [ 64 ]. This model is able to answer Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) to support students and teachers effectively while accessing any online portal related to education [ 43 ].

Offer multi-lingual support: ChatGPT can generate text in multiple languages, making it accessible to a wider audience across language barriers [ 38 ].

Assist programming projects: ChatGPT is able to provide code snippets and suggestions, generate documentation and commenting, and help to find solutions to problems [ 53 ].

Provide 24/7 support: ChatGPT can be used as an online tool making educational resources and support available to students immediately during not only regular business hours but also at all times [ 24 , 60 ].

4.3 Challenges of ChatGPT

Though ChatGPT is a powerful tool with numerous potential benefits, some challenges may arise with its use. The challenges can be categorized into four major categories (Fig.  6 ):

figure 6

Challenges of ChatGPT in academia

figure 7

ChatGPT provided five articles with same authors and different titles for different topics (a) articles on biometric authentication methods (b) articles on biometric generated private/public key cryptography

figure 8

ChatGPT is not able to generate graph

figure 9

ChatGPT was not able to provide an HTML link for an article

figure 10

ChatGPT generated wrong response

Inconsistent performance: Being an AI model, ChatGPT gives machine-generated replies. Though this model is trained on huge datasets, there is a chance of containing biased data which may generate biased output [ 24 , 60 , 65 ]. Again, this model may generate different replies on the same question when asked separately [ 62 ]. Moreover, ChatGPT may lead to outline inconsistent performance which in turn may affect the reliability and validity of research findings [ 49 ]. Figure 7  (a) and (b) shows that ChatGPT offered five articles related to each topic that was asked for. For the two ideas that ChatGPT suggested, the authors and years are the same, also the articles don’t exist.

Difficulty to adopt new models: ChatGPT can be integrated to develop a new system. However, usage and integration of this model with existing ones can be complex and difficult. Since all queries to this model are stored and used to train this model further, there is always a data privacy and security concern which may make students adopt ChatGPT [ 58 ].

Sudden rise of technical issues: ChatGPT is an AI model having limited understanding and background information. So, sudden technical issues such as compatibility issues with existing systems, software bugs, or hardware malfunctions, may occur [ 58 ].

Education and knowledge retrieval:

Provides inadequate support: ChatGPT may provide inadequate user support [ 1 ]. If the user doesn’t provide the clear, concise, and relevant input, ChatGPT may generate an accurate response [ 24 ]. This model was developed following transformer architecture which is highly appropriate for handling text data. So, this model isn’t able to generate graphs or images. But ChatGPT can provide necessary data and instructions on how to create a graph using various software tools [ 66 ] (Fig.  8 ). This model also can’t provide any direct reference, link, or source for any responses [ 66 ]. This may create difficulties in writing assignments and articles with references that may ensure the authenticity of the statements. For example, a link for accessing a research article was asked to ChatGPT. In response, it was not able to provide an HTML link for the original source of the article (Fig.  9 ).

Spread misinformation: ChatGPT is trained on a huge but limited data set up to 2021. In 2023, there is a chance to provide incorrect information as well as results through this model [ 49 , 60 ]. Figure 10 shows, while ChatGPT was asked: "When is the next Bonn Climate Change Conference scheduled?"; ChatGPT replied that the schedule is from 13 to 24 June 2022. This query was made on 17th July 2023. The next Bonn Climate Change Conference after the date of query is scheduled from November 11 to 22, 2024. This scenario refers that ChatGPT may generate an inconsistent response.

Misinterpret student understanding: Incorrect assessment of student understanding may happen if ChatGPT is not able to properly account for different learning styles or prior knowledge and experiences [ 67 ]. However, it is also difficult for the teachers to differentiate between the AI-generated text and the student’s own writing which may lead to misinterpreting the actual scenario of student understanding or knowledge [ 23 ].

Lead to update course contents: Since ChatGPT is able to assist students with any textual content, students may use this model for their assignments, online exams, etc. It is very difficult for a human to detect AI-generated text. So, the course contents may require to be updated in innovative ways especially assignments that can’t be solved easily by any AI model [ 68 ].

Personal skill development:

Increase ethical concerns: ChatGPT is able to provide aids related to research and studies. This may increase ethical concerns for the teachers (i.e.: integrity and plagiarism, accuracy and reliability, privacy and security, fairness and bias, etc. in responses ) [ 60 ]. Again, students may make a wrong usage of ChatGPT to complete their assignments, online quizzes, etc. pretending that they have done it on their own [ 23 , 32 ]. These may affect their ethics as well as personality [ 69 ].

Reduce ability to handle complex scenarios: ChatGPT is operated based on algorithms and pre-existing knowledge, rather than human insight and critical thinking which may reduce compatibility in academia. This can result in limitations in the ability to cope with complex and new situations or consider multiple perspectives [ 42 ].

Weaken content creation ability: Since ChatGPT is able to assist both teachers and students with their writing, regular work, study, and research, some users may become over-reliant on this AI model [ 24 ]. This may weaken individual critical thinking skills reducing productivity to create innovative and new content [ 45 , 70 ].

Reduce reliability: Since ChatGPT can generate inconsistent and incorrect information related to a topic, it may lead to reduced reliability [ 1 ]. This may discourage users from adapting this model for their study and research purposes.

Reduce privacy: While using ChatGPT, users may share their sensitive information like corporate business policy, military tactics, financial data, or personal data [ 2 ]. This data is very private and must not be shared with others [ 71 , 72 ]. Since ChatGPT is continuously trained on a vast amount of data (even from the conversation with the users) to generate a response, sensitive or personal information may be leaked or misused [ 22 ].

Lessen security: ChatGPT can be vulnerable to cyber attacks resulting in theft or loss of data. This can also hamper the overall system security [ 73 ]. Again, ChatGPT is basically trained on the data available over the internet (both authenticated and unauthenticated). ChatGPT can be manipulated to generate misleading or harmful content, such as fake news, phishing attempts, or malicious code, which can be used to deceive users or compromise systems [ 74 ].

Increase unemployment: ChatGPT can automate tasks that were previously performed by human workers (data entry and processing, language translation, code generation and debugging, content generation) that may result in reduced workload as well as manpower. In turn, it is also possible to create job replacements for human teachers and tutors [ 60 ].

5 Conclusions

ChatGPT is an AI model which is already used by millions of users. This article highlights the possible opportunities and challenges that could arise due to the innovation of ChatGPT in academia. Although the challenges of ChatGPT include inaccuracy, fairness, ethical issues, and the like, these can be addressed by improving the effectiveness and responsible usage of this language model. Again, the conversations with every user are stored and used further to learn the model (ChatGPT) for improving its accuracy to provide better user support. So, for the time being, the opportunities of ChatGPT will increase while the problems raised due to ChatGPT will decrease. As such, the implementation of ChatGPT may impact very positively all concerns related to academia in the near future. Therefore, this article provides an depth understanding of ChatGPT in the academic domain.

By addressing the challenges of ChatGPT depicted in this research, students can easily navigate and utilize emerging technologies effectively. Another implication of this research can be the identification of the areas to improve further in ChatGPT by analyzing knowledge gaps, ineffective principles, and inefficient procedures encountered in academia. Addressing the areas can assist in the development of more efficient procedures and interfaces. Future studies may focus on addressing these issues to ensure improved quality education. Performing the usability and UX analysis through evaluation studies of this AL model will also help to ensure more acceptability among the teachers and students [ 75 ]. However, since AI technology is a rapidly growing area of computer science, potential measures must be taken to address all the challenges that may arise in the future.

This research has a few limitations as well. This study reviewed and analyzed the limited online and published resources that were available till March 2023. Again, the methodology adopted for analyzing the data is qualitative in nature, which mostly depends on the analyst or researcher’s skills and experiences. Finally, a few cases were discussed with appropriate examples and scenarios for better understanding.

Americans’ use of chatgpt is ticking up, but few trust its election information.

It’s been more than a year since ChatGPT’s public debut set the tech world abuzz . And Americans’ use of the chatbot is ticking up: 23% of U.S. adults say they have ever used it, according to a Pew Research Center survey conducted in February, up from 18% in July 2023.

The February survey also asked Americans about several ways they might use ChatGPT, including for workplace tasks, for learning and for fun. While growing shares of Americans are using the chatbot for these purposes, the public is more wary than not of what the chatbot might tell them about the 2024 U.S. presidential election. About four-in-ten adults have not too much or no trust in the election information that comes from ChatGPT. By comparison, just 2% have a great deal or quite a bit of trust.

Pew Research Center conducted this study to understand Americans’ use of ChatGPT and their attitudes about the chatbot. For this analysis, we surveyed 10,133 U.S. adults from Feb. 7 to Feb. 11, 2024.

Everyone who took part in the survey is a member of the Center’s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way, nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Read more about the ATP’s methodology .

Here are the questions used for this analysis , along with responses, and the survey methodology .

Below we’ll look more closely at:

  • Which U.S. adults have used ChatGPT
  • How Americans are using it
  • How much Americans trust ChatGPT’s election information

Who has used ChatGPT?

A line chart showing that chatGPT use has ticked up since July, particularly among younger adults.

Most Americans still haven’t used the chatbot, despite the uptick since our July 2023 survey on this topic . But some groups remain far more likely to have used it than others.

Differences by age

Adults under 30 stand out: 43% of these young adults have used ChatGPT, up 10 percentage points since last summer. Use of the chatbot is also up slightly among those ages 30 to 49 and 50 to 64. Still, these groups remain less likely than their younger peers to have used the technology. Just 6% of Americans 65 and up have used ChatGPT.

Differences by education

Highly educated adults are most likely to have used ChatGPT: 37% of those with a postgraduate or other advanced degree have done so, up 8 points since July 2023. This group is more likely to have used ChatGPT than those with a bachelor’s degree only (29%), some college experience (23%) or a high school diploma or less (12%).

How have Americans used ChatGPT?

Since March 2023, we’ve also tracked three potential reasons Americans might use ChatGPT: for work, to learn something new or for entertainment.

Line charts showing that the share of employed Americans who have used ChatGPT for work has risen by double digits in the past year.

The share of employed Americans who have used ChatGPT on the job increased from 8% in March 2023 to 20% in February 2024, including an 8-point increase since July.

Turning to U.S. adults overall, about one-in-five have used ChatGPT to learn something new (17%) or for entertainment (17%). These shares have increased from about one-in-ten in March 2023.

Line charts showing that about a third of employed Americans under 30 have now used ChatGPT for work.

Use of ChatGPT for work, learning or entertainment has largely risen across age groups over the past year. Still, there are striking differences between these groups (those 18 to 29, 30 to 49, and 50 and older).

For example, about three-in-ten employed adults under 30 (31%) say they have used it for tasks at work – up 19 points from a year ago, with much of that increase happening since July. These younger workers are more likely than their older peers to have used ChatGPT in this way.

Adults under 30 also stand out in using the chatbot for learning. And when it comes to entertainment, those under 50 are more likely than older adults to use ChatGPT for this purpose.

A third of employed Americans with a postgraduate degree have used ChatGPT for work, compared with smaller shares of workers who have a bachelor’s degree only (25%), some college (19%) or a high school diploma or less (8%).

Those shares have each roughly tripled since March 2023 for workers with a postgraduate degree, bachelor’s degree or some college. Among workers with a high school diploma or less, use is statistically unchanged from a year ago.

Using ChatGPT for other purposes also varies by education level, though the patterns are slightly different. For example, a quarter each of postgraduate and bachelor’s degree-holders have used ChatGPT for learning, compared with 16% of those with some college experience and 11% of those with a high school diploma or less education. Each of these shares is up from a year ago.

ChatGPT and the 2024 presidential election

With more people using ChatGPT, we also wanted to understand whether Americans trust the information they get from it, particularly in the context of U.S. politics.

A horizontal stacked bar chart showing that about 4 in 10 Americans don’t trust information about the election that comes from ChatGPT.

About four-in-ten Americans (38%) don’t trust the information that comes from ChatGPT about the 2024 U.S. presidential election – that is, they say they have not too much trust (18%) or no trust at all (20%).

A mere 2% have a great deal or quite a bit of trust, while 10% have some trust.

Another 15% aren’t sure, while 34% have not heard of ChatGPT.

Distrust far outweighs trust regardless of political party. About four-in-ten Republicans and Democrats alike (including those who lean toward each party) have not too much or no trust at all in ChatGPT’s election information.

Notably, however, very few Americans have actually used the chatbot to find information about the presidential election: Just 2% of adults say they have done so, including 2% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents and 1% of Republicans and GOP leaners.

These survey findings come amid growing national attention on chatbots and misinformation. Several tech companies have recently pledged to prevent the misuse of artificial intelligence – including chatbots – in this year’s election. But recent reports suggest chatbots themselves may provide misleading answers to election-related questions .

Note: Here are the questions used for this analysis , along with responses, and the survey methodology .

Why You're Likely To Use ChatGPT To Write Reports, Do Research, Email Clients

  • by Joe Mandese   @mp_joemandese , January 16, 2024

Full disclosure: I wrote this report manually, without the assistance of ChatGPT or another generative AI tool. Thankfully, new research indicates I'm still in the majority, especially where the ad industry is concerned.

Given the amount of coverage MediaPost and our peers have devoted to the ad industry's rapid embrace of generative AI platforms and tools over the past year, I've often wondered how it compares with other industries. Coincidentally, I got the answer in my inbox this morning. Well, at least insofar as business executives across industries in the U.K. self-reported through September 2023.

According to a survey conducted by Web security developer Indusface, the ad industry is indeed the leader in terms of business people self-reporting that they now utilize ChatGPT, albeit followed closely by business professionals in the legal industry too.

In terms of ways business pros have begun utilizing ChatGPT -- and by proxy, presumably other generative AI tools, including your agency's in-house ones -- writing reports ranks No. 1, followed by translation, research and emailing clients or colleagues.

Think about that the next time you receive a client brief, respond to one, or begin researching your next media plan.

You've probably heard a lot about ChatGPT - the incredibly smart AI language model that can engage in human-like conversations and help with all sorts of tasks like writing, analysis, coding, and more. But have you ever wondered how you actually get ChatGPT to do what you want it to do? That's where prompts come in!

Prompts are essentially the instructions or questions you give to ChatGPT to kickstart a conversation or task. They act as a starting point and guide on what kind of response or output you're looking for from the AI prompt writer.

What are ChatGPT Prompts?

ChatGPT prompts are the instructions or questions that you provide to the ChatGPT language model to generate a desired output or response.

In simple terms, a prompt is the starting point that guides ChatGPT on what kind of text, analysis, or task you want it to perform. You can think of it as a way to initiate a conversation or provide context and direction to the AI model.

Different Forms of ChatGPT Prompts

There are many types of ChatGPT prompts for writers, some of them are mentioned below:

1. Questions

These are the direct interrogative statements that seek specific information or answers from ChatGPT. These ChatGPT prompts for writing are concise and straightforward, allowing you to obtain factual data or insights efficiently. For example, ask ChatGPT a direct question like " What is the capital of France? " or " Which is the best student accommodation in London? "

2. Instructions

These ChatGPT prompts for writing provide detailed directives that outline the task or output you expect from ChatGPT. These prompts provide clear guidelines, parameters, and requirements, enabling the AI prompt writer to generate tailored responses or deliverables. For example, give specific instructions like " Write a 300-word blog post about the benefits of writing. " or " Eligibility criteria to apply for a fully-funded scholarship. "

This type of ChatGPT prompts for writers provides background information, scenarios, or situational details to set the stage for ChatGPT's response. Contextual prompts help the AI understand the broader picture and deliver more relevant, nuanced outputs.

4. Examples

This ChatGPT prompt writing that includes sample content, templates, or formatting specifications to illustrate the desired structure or style of the expected output. Examples serve as visual references, guiding ChatGPT in producing responses that align with your preferences.

In most cases, the use of ChatGPT prompts for writing can significantly enhance your productivity, creativity, writing quality, and efficiency, making it a valuable tool for individuals and businesses alike. Some key benefits of using ChatGPT prompts for writers:

1. Increased Productivity

2. Enhanced Creativity

By providing a starting point or context through an AI prompt writer, you can spark new ideas and do some creative things with ChatGPT . The AI's ability to understand and build upon prompts can lead to unique and imaginative outputs that you may not have considered otherwise.

3. Improved Writing Quality

ChatGPT excels at generating coherent, well-structured, and grammatically correct text. By using ChatGPT prompts for writing tasks, you can ensure a high level of quality and consistency in your written content, whether it's articles, stories, scripts, or reports.

4. Time-Saving

Instead of spending hours researching, brainstorming, or drafting content from scratch, you can use prompts to generate initial outputs from ChatGPT quickly. This saves valuable time and allows you to focus on refining and polishing the AI prompt writer content.

5. Collaboration and Ideation

ChatGPT prompts for writers can facilitate collaboration and creativity by enabling multiple users to contribute to and build upon prompts, generating a rich exchange of ideas and outputs.

How to Give Effective ChatGPT Prompts for Writing?

From defining your goals and providing context to incorporating examples and specifying output formats, these effective tips will help you to communicate your needs effectively, ensuring that ChatGPT delivers its best work every time. Below are nine tips to give effective ChatGPT prompts for writing:

1. Be clear and specific while writing ChatGPT prompts

You know how sometimes you ask someone for help without telling them the context, and they're not really sure how to help you? The same thing can happen with an AI prompt writer like ChatGPT. To get the best results, you need to be crystal clear about what you're asking for. Give it all the details and context it needs to understand exactly what you want from it. That way, ChatGPT prompts for writing can nail and give you something really great.

2. Start with action words while generating a prompt

Imagine you're giving instructions to a friend – you'd probably start with something like "write," "explain," or "summarise," right? Well, ChatGPT responds really well to those action words, too. Kick off your ChatGPT prompt writing with an action verb that tells ChatGPT precisely what you want it to do. It'll help set the tone and direction right from the start while writing ChatGPT prompts.

3. Add content to a ChatGPT prompt

The more information and context you can provide to an AI prompt writer like ChatGPT, the better it can understand your needs and deliver something awesome. So don't just give it bare-bone ChatGPT prompts; add some juicy details, background info, or examples to really paint the picture. It'll help ChatGPT grasp the subtle difference and give you a response that hits the mark.

4. Use examples in the ChatGPT prompt

Sometimes, it's easier to show than tell, right? If you want ChatGPT prompt writing to follow a specific format, structure, or style, why not include an example right in the prompt? It'll give the AI a clear template to work with, and you're more likely to get an output that matches what you had in mind.

5. Specify the length of a ChatGPT output

Let's say you need a short blog intro or a lengthy research paper – make sure to let ChatGPT know. Specifying the desired length or word count in your prompt will help the AI tailor its response accordingly. That way, you won't end up with something too long or too short for your needs.

6. Clarify the tone for ChatGPT output

Imagine if ChatGPT gives you a super formal academic paper when you want something casual and conversational but you know it is not ideal. So, be sure to specify the tone you're going for in your prompt – formal, casual, technical, friendly, or whatever suits your needs. It'll help ChatGPT nail the right vibe.

7. Guide the ChatGPT AI

Sometimes, you might want to steer ChatGPT prompt writing in a particular direction or set some boundaries. In this case, you can include specific instructions, constraints, or guidelines in your ChatGPT prompt to help guide the AI's response. After all, you're in the driver's seat, because you are the one generating output.

8. Experiment and iterate with ChatGPT prompts

Don't be afraid to play around and try different approaches with your prompts. It's often a process of trial and error to find what works best. Experiment with different phrasings, structures, and levels of detail, and don't be discouraged if you don't nail it on the first try. Keep iterating and refining your prompts based on ChatGPT's responses, and you'll get better and better at it.

9. Review and refine your ChatGPT prompt writing

Once you've got the ChatGPT prompt writing output, take a good look at it and see how well it matches what you were going for. If any areas could be improved, use that feedback to tweak and refine your prompt. The more you practise and learn from experience, the easier it'll be to craft prompts that deliver exactly what you need.

Study shows ChatGPT can produce medical record notes 10 times faster than doctors without compromising quality

by Uppsala University

doctor

The AI model ChatGPT can write administrative medical notes up to 10 times faster than doctors without compromising quality. This is according to a study conducted by researchers at Uppsala University Hospital and Uppsala University in collaboration with Danderyd Hospital and the University Hospital of Basel, Switzerland. The research is published in the journal Acta Orthopaedica .

They conducted a pilot study of just six virtual patient cases, which will now be followed up with an in-depth study of 1,000 authentic patient medical records .

"For years, the debate has centered on how to improve the efficiency of health care. Thanks to advances in generative AI and language modeling, there are now opportunities to reduce the administrative burden on health care professionals. This will allow doctors to spend more time with their patients," explains Cyrus Brodén, an orthopedic physician and researcher at Uppsala University Hospital and Uppsala University.

Administrative tasks take up a large share of a doctor's working hours, reducing the time for patient contact and contributing to a stressful work situation.

Researchers at Uppsala University Hospital and Uppsala University, in collaboration with Danderyd Hospital and the University Hospital of Basel, Switzerland, have shown in a new study that the AI model ChatGPT can write administrative medical notes up to 10 times faster than doctors without compromising quality.

The aim of the study was to assess the quality and effectiveness of the ChatGPT tool when producing medical record notes. The researchers used six virtual patient cases that mimicked real cases in both structure and content. Discharge documents for each case were generated by orthopaedic physicians. ChatGPT-4 was then asked to generate the same notes. The quality assessment was carried out by an expert panel of 15 people who were unaware of the source of the documents. As a secondary metric, the time required to create the documents was compared.

"The results show that ChatGPT-4 and human-generated notes are comparable in quality overall, but ChatGPT-4 produced discharge documents ten times faster than the doctors," notes Brodén.

"Our interpretation is that advanced large language models like ChatGPT-4 have the potential to change the way we work with administrative tasks in health care. I believe that generative AI will have a major impact on health care and that this could be the beginning of a very exciting development," he maintains.

The plan is to launch an in-depth study shortly, with researchers collecting 1,000 medical patient records. Again, the aim is to use ChatGPT to produce similar administrative notes in the patient records.

"This will be an interesting and resource-intensive project involving many partners. We are already working actively to fulfill all data management and confidentiality requirements to get the study underway," concludes Brodén.
