Guideline for the Bachelor’s thesis

Important Information about registering, writing and submitting your Bachelor’s thesis

Time of registration

Registration for the Bachelor’s thesis is possible as soon as 108 credit points have been achieved. As a rule, this should be the case during the fifth semester. The completion of the BA thesis is usually recommended for the sixth semester (submission by 30 September or 31 March, if the standard period of study must be adhered to and if, for example, a Master’s programme immediately follows).

Registration and topic

Please agree on a topic with your supervisor, who usually also acts as the first examiner, before registering your Bachelor’s thesis. As a rule, you must write it in your   major ; a topic from your minor is only possible if there is a connection in terms of content and/or methodology.

In the dual-subject Bachelor’s programme , the thesis can be registered in either of the subjects. An interdisciplinary topic in both subjects is possible if supervision by one examiner per subject is guaranteed.

The topic is agreed either in a personal meeting between the candidate and the examiners as part of a course/meeting or by exchanging emails with the first and second examiner. The topic specified in the email from the first examiner is binding and must be transferred to the registration form.

Please submit the completed “Registration for Bachelor’s Thesis” form, signed and dated by you and your supervisor ("Supervisor; First Reviewer; Examiner") and the second examiner, immediately by mail (or as a scan via the contact form) to the Examination Office.

The binding notification of the topic, including the setting of a submission deadline, is then sent in writing by the Examinations Office. The submission deadline is calculated from the date the topic is issued, based on the date of the first reviewer’s signature. You should therefore also endeavour to obtain the signature of the second examiner at the same time and submit the registration form to the Examination Office immediately after finalising the topic. 

If the topic was agreed by exchanging emails with the first and second supervisor, please forward the email from the first supervisor together with the email from the second supervisor and the scanned registration form (completed and signed by all parties) to the Examination Office via the contact form.

The binding notification of the topic, including the setting of a submission deadline, is then made in writing by the Examinations Office. The topic is therefore formally set by the examination Office (Examination Office, Maximilianstraße 22, 53111 Bonn) following registration.

The submission deadline is calculated from the date the topic is issued based on the date of the first reviewer's signature. You should therefore also endeavour to obtain the signature of the second assessor at the same time and submit the application to the Examinations Office immediately after agreeing on the topic. 

Important note : Please note that the examination regulations only recognise the term “topic”, not “title”. The topic of the thesis is therefore synonymous with the title of the thesis. The specific topic that you have indicated on the registration form and agreed with the reviewers is placed on the cover sheet and in the declaration of independence. Please refer to the separate point below under the heading ‘Changing the topic’ for the possibility of changing the topic at a later date.

Examiners / Supervisors

In principle, all lecturers in your subject may act as examiners/supervisors for a Bachelor’s thesis. Please note that one of the two examiners must be employed with at least 50% at the University of Bonn. Both examiners must have at least the academic degree "Magister Artium (M.A.)" or "Master of Arts (M.A.)". Please also note that there is no legal entitlement to a specific examiner.

Writing period

A maximum period of three months from the issueing of the topic (date of signature of the first reviewer) is allowed for the writing of the provided topic & thesis. Upon justified request, the Examination Office may, in agreement with the examiner, grant an extension of up to six weeks for the submission of the Bachelor’s thesis. An extension of more than six weeks is not possible, even in cases of illness (in these cases it is only possible to withdraw from the registered examination, cf. the section “Withdrawal”).

Change of topic

It is possible to slightly change the focus of the original topic upon written request to the Examination Office, provided that your supervisor supports the request and documents this with his/her signature. Please note that a complete change or reorientation of the topic requires a withdrawal in accordance with the regulations.

There is a one-off opportunity to return the topic no later than one month after being notified of it by the Examination Office and to document this formally with a written request to withdraw from the Bachelor’s thesis registration. In this case, the topic is deemed not to have been issued; there is therefore no failed attempt. Please note that it is not possible to withdraw after this deadline. As an exception, this is only permitted after the deadline if there are valid reasons (in particular inability to take the examination due to illness). In both cases, the thesis must be re-registered later; the newly issued topic must differ significantly in content from the originally issued topic.

Scope and requirements

The text part of the Bachelor’s thesis should contain at least 70,000 characters including spaces and notes (or 35 A4 pages) and may not exceed 120,000 characters including spaces and notes (or 60 A4 pages). The content and form of the thesis must meet the standards of academic work at “Bachelor of Arts” or “Bachelor of Science” level. You should therefore enquire about the specific requirements with your academic advisor. Please also note that the regulation of registration becoming possible after achieving  108 credit points means that you can prepare the Bachelor’s thesis during your studies (as opposed to at the very end of them) thoroughly with the necessary research and readings before registering the thesis during your fifth semester.

Cover sheet / title page

To ensure that all the necessary information appears on the cover page of the Bachelor's thesis, please follow this template:  Sample cover page (DOCX).

Until further notice, Bachelor’s theses must still be submitted digitally AND by mail (three bound copies, see below). The content of the digital version and the written copies must be identical! CD-ROMs and USB sticks no longer need to be attached. As usual, the Examination Office will take care of forwarding the thesis to the first examiner and the second examiner. Once submitted, a Bachelor’s thesis cannot be withdrawn!

The thesis must be accompanied by a written declaration ("declaration of independence") in which you affirm that you have written the thesis independently, have not used any sources and aids other than those specified, have marked quotations and have submitted identical digital and written copies. Please note that the use of AI (applications such as ChatGPT) in the preparation of written work is prohibited! It is an unauthorised aid unless its use has been expressly permitted by the examiners. In cases of doubt, the Examination Office may request a sworn declaration.

Please attach the following declaration with date and original signature (not digital) as the last page of your thesis (Download Declaration of Independence here) :

“I hereby affirm that the Bachelor’s thesis entitled “...” was written by myself and without any unauthorised assistance, that it has not been submitted for examination at any other university, that it has not been published in whole or in part, and that the content of the text file of the digital version is identical to the written versions submitted. I have indicated in each individual case those parts of the thesis - including charts, maps, illustrations, etc. - which are taken from other works in terms of wording or meaning.”

This declaration must be submitted together with the other parts of the thesis, such as the cover sheet, the bibliographies and any appendices, firmly attached to the rest of the thesis (no loose sheets!).

1. digital submission:

Please send the digital version as a text file (Word document or PDF) from your University of Bonn e-mail address to the Examinations Office of the Faculty of Humanities or use the contact form. The hand-signed declaration of independence must be inserted as a scanned document into the Bachelor`’s thesis as the last page. This file of your Bachelor’s thesis will be forwarded to the respective two examiners by the Examinations Office; submission deadlines are met upon receipt of the electronically sent form at the Examinations Office. As we have already received the document in electronic form from you by e-mail/contact form, you no longer need to send us a CD-ROM or USB stick with the thesis by post until further notice.

2. submission by mail:

Your thesis must be submitted to us in triplicate by mail. Please submit each of these copies in bound form (adhesive, spiral or hardcover binding is the norm). Please also note that the indexes and appendices as well as the cover sheet and the self-signed declaration of independence are part of the thesis and must therefore be firmly bound. The paper version must be submitted by post no later than one week after the submission of the digital version.

Exceeding the submission deadline

If you exceed the deadline for submission, the Bachelor’s thesis must be assessed as "insufficient" (5.0). If necessary, please submit an application for an extension in good time before the deadline (at least three weeks before the deadline).

A failed Bachelor’s thesis can be repeated once . Failed attempts in the same subject at other universities will be recognised. In these cases, the topic can be chosen from another subject area. If the second Bachelor’s thesis is also assessed as "insufficient", the Bachelor's exam has been failed conclusively.

De-registration

In general, you must remain enrolled even after submitting your Bachelor’s thesis or another final exam in your degree programme in accordance with § 63 Para. 1, 2nd half-sentence HG; the examination procedure is only completed when it has been determined whether it was successful or unsuccessful. Students who have not re-registered, e.g. in order to save the associated fees, although they are not expected to know their examination result at the end of the previous semester are therefore taking a risk, especially as their uni-ID will be switched off and they will no longer have access to BASIS and their transcripts.

If you have not passed your last examin(s) and have therefore unfortunately not achieved your degree after all, you must re-enrol in order to re-sit your exams. If you have already missed the set re-registration deadline at this point, late re-registration at the Registrar's Office in accordance with Section 16 of the Enrolment Regulations can only take place later if the missed deadline is excused in writing for an important reason and proof of this is provided. You cannot register for the last outstanding exam before you are re-enrolled. It may also be the case that you can no longer be enrolled in your old examination regulations, but must continue your studies in accordance with the new examination regulations then in use, which may be followed by a time-consuming credit transfer procedure and possibly the loss of credits already earned.

However, if you have properly re-registered, you are entitled to a partial refund of the fees as soon as you have passed the final exam. You can find more information here .

Bachelor's Thesis/Master's Thesis

Extending the submission deadline, can i change the topic of my thesis, final oral examination ('kolloquium').

Each program concludes with a final assignment, the Bachelor's or Master's thesis. The time frame for writing the thesis depends on the program and topic and can be anywhere between four weeks and four months. Students may choose a thesis adviser from the pool of professors of his/her program (please refer to the examination regulations ('Prüfungsordnung') for details). The topic is determined by the thesis adviser but students have the option to suggest specific areas for the topic of their thesis.

As with any other exam you are required to register for your thesis. Please contact the Office of Student services for information on how to proceed.

There are all kinds of reasons why you may need to extend the submission deadline of your thesis. It is usually possible to request an extension if unfavorable circumstances prevent you from handing in your thesis in time. Please note that you need to apply for an extension before the original deadline. The decision on whether your deadline will be extended lies with the chairperson of the examination board. Your thesis adviser is to be heard on the request as well. 

The examination regulations of your program provide additional information on application deadlines and extension periods. These extension periods are binding and extensions beyond those time frames are not possible. 

Should you deal with a serious illness for an extended period of time while working on your thesis, an extension of the submission deadline may not be enough. In this case it might be more appropriate to withdraw from writing the thesis. To do so, you need to submit a written request to the examination board. Please state the reasons for withdrawing and enclose a medical certificate. Please note that this must be done before the original submission deadline. If your withdrawal is approved by the examination board, you may register again (with a different topic) at a later date and your first attempt at writing your thesis will not count towards the maximum possible number of attempts.

It is not possible to change the topic of your thesis. However, if you come to the conclusion that the topic proposed by your thesis advisor is not working for you, you may withdraw from writing a thesis on this topic (without giving reasons). Please note that this can only be done once and only during the first two weeks of the assigned time frame. Your thesis advisor will assign you a new topic which must be different from the original one.  If this is your second attempt at writing your thesis you may only withdraw from a topic if you did not do so during your first attempt. 

In some cases, minor changes to the title of your thesis may be possible. Please ask your thesis advisor for details.

In addition to the Bachelor's or Master's thesis students are usually required to pass a final oral examination ('Kolloquium'). 

The final oral examination complements the thesis and is normally evaluated as an independent examination. It is to determine whether the examinee is capable of orally presenting and independently justifying the findings of the thesis, its scientific fundamentals as well as inter- and multidisciplinary contexts, and of assessing the thesis’ significance for practice. The examinee's approach to writing the thesis is also to be discussed. The final oral examination is jointly held and evaluated by both examiners of the thesis and usually lasts approximately 30 minutes.

Think about which professorship you would like to write your thesis at an early stage. You can use the professorship's teaching or research as a guide. Many professorships also publish possible topics and information on how the application process is organised at the professorship on their websites. Alternatively, you can also suggest a topic for a thesis to the lecturers. It is an advantage if you have taken modules at the professorship in advance. This may already result in a thesis. Before you apply for a topic or suggest your own topic, it makes sense to talk to the professor.

Note for Master's theses

Depending on the degree programme and examination regulations, the Master's thesis must be written in a specific subject area. Our overview provides clarity.

Theses with a company

Many companies offer theses on their websites. However, a supervisor must be found at the faculty to supervise the thesis. To do this, it is advisable to make use of the lecturers' office hours. As soon as all three parties have given their consent, a cooperation agreement can be concluded.

If you do not wish to write your thesis in Information Systems (Department 3), you must take part in the centralised allocation procedure. In Information Systems, you can apply directly to the professorships.

The online application phase for theses for the summer semester 2024 via the central allocation procedure runs from 22 January (09:00) to 02 February 2024 (23:59).

Centralised allocation procedure

The aim of the centralised allocation procedure is to distribute the theses due in a semester evenly among the individual professorships, taking into account your priorities and supervisory capacities.

The following departments are involved in the allocation procedure:

• Department 5: Business Education
• Department 6: Law
• and Prof. Dr. Schaper

Please note that Department 3: Business Information Systems does not participate in the centralised allocation procedure for theses.

To take part in the centralised allocation procedure, register during the application phase with your IMT data in the form linked below, fill it out and upload all the necessary documents in one file .

The required documents include

• a CV (optionally with a photo (a scan of the photo is sufficient))
• a current overview of grades from PAUL (screenshot from PAUL of the performance account with average grade is sufficient)
• a copy of the Bachelor's certificate (if available)
• Some professorships require further information, such as proof of internships or exposés, for the application of theses. Please read the relevant guidelines of the professorships before applying. Please note that all documents must be combined in one PDF file.
• Registered achievements (a screenshot from PAUL is sufficient or Learning Agreement for stays abroad)

Please leave the Assignment field blank. Finally, click on Save . If you fail to save the data, you will be responsible for any missed deadlines.

After submitting the forms

Once you have successfully submitted the form, it will close and you will receive a confirmation email. If you go to the "Thesis application" page, you can see your entry in a list. In the overview, you can edit your entry by clicking on your matriculation number. After you have made changes, you will receive another confirmation email. Once you have finished entering your data, please deregister from the system.

Application in paper form is not possible

It is not possible to submit a paper application. Please also note that this system does not replace the official registration of the thesis, but initially serves to allocate theses to the participating departments and professorships.

Indication of priorities

In your application, you can indicate up to three professorships you would like to write your thesis with. Your documents will initially be submitted to the first priority in a round-based process. Only if no assignment is made in the first round, the second priority will be considered.

You should therefore specify at least two professorships where you would like to write your thesis. The third priority is optional, but recommended.

The allocation process takes about 1 - 1 ½ months. You will then be informed by email about your assignment and your contact. The selection is made by the professorships. You determine the criteria according to which the selection is made. These can be, for example, the modules you have completed, the letter of motivation you have submitted or the progress you have made in your studies. Your chances therefore depend on the professorship.

The allocation procedure guarantees that each person will receive a supervising professorship. However, it is possible to obtain a non-prioritised professorship. In over 90% of applications, however, it is one of the prioritised professorships. If you are not satisfied with the allocation, you always have the option of declining and trying again in the next semester or asking for one of the professorships in Business Informatics.

Typical problems

• The ECTS credits required for registration are not yet available At the time of application for participation in the allocation procedure, the ECTS credits required by the examination regulations, depending on the degree programme, do not yet have to be available. This limit only becomes relevant in the following semester after allocation, when you officially register your thesis with the relevant examination secretariat.
• I did not receive a transcript of records You do not need a transcript of records issued by the Examinations Office for your thesis application; it is sufficient if you provide a screenshot of your transcript of records from PAUL. You can also use a screenshot or a web page printout of your performance account from PAUL. Please make sure that this also shows your name and your average grade.
• I cannot find a list of topics Chairs handle the allocation of topics differently. Not all of them publish topic suggestions or areas for theses. If you cannot find any lists, you can use the content from the chair's teaching or research as a guide. It is also possible to suggest your own topic.
• Logging in does not work The system is only open to students during the application phase. It is not possible to log in before the start or after the end of the application phase. If you are unable to log in with your IMT data during the application phase, please contact the Student Office and attach a screenshot of the error message.

Typical questions

• Should I create one document for each priority? No, please summarise all documents in one document. The chairs also know that you are applying for several priorities and may therefore need to write different letters of motivation.
• Should you apply now if you do not want to start your thesis until the middle or end of the semester? The thesis should always be registered at the beginning of a semester. However, it depends on the professorship whether you are given a certain amount of leeway when registering. In most cases, however, you are not free to choose the registration period. So if you want to write in the coming semester, you should use the next application period!
• What do I do if my first priority is a Winfo chair, but I have not yet received any feedback and my other priorities are from other departments? Should I still apply to the centralised allocation procedure? You can participate in the centralised allocation procedure with up to three priorities and at the same time apply to chairs that are not participating in the procedure. If you do not wish to accept a place from one of the two application procedures, please inform the respective chair in good time.

Registering the thesis

Once the topic has been assigned, the thesis must be registered via a web-based application procedure in PAUL. As part of this procedure, you can apply online to register your thesis. The information required for admission is requested via the application form. Once the application has been checked, you will receive a PAUL system message with information on how to proceed. If you have any questions or problems, please contact the relevant person in the Central Examination Office . Further information can be found in your examination regulations .

Check whether you have sufficient ECTS for admission You must have earned a minimum number of ECTS by the time you apply for admission. In the Bachelor's programme, you must have earned all credit points from the assessment phase and at least 60 credit points from the profiling phase; in the Master's programme, you must have earned a total of 60 ECTS. Beyond this, there must be no open enrolment requirements. In individual cases, however, language certificates or similar (depending on the Master's degree programme) may still be required. Please refer to your examination regulations for further information.

For students of B.Sc. Business Information Systems, M.Sc. Business Administration and M.Sc. Taxation, Accounting and Finance

In addition to writing the thesis, qualified participation (so-called coursework) is required in the degree programs mentioned above. The coursework is to be agreed individually with the supervising professorship and is registered when registering for the final thesis. You can find a form for the agreement of the coursework as part of the thesis here.

Writing the final thesis

The processing time is three months for Bachelor's theses and six months for Master's theses. The exact requirements for your degree programme can be found in your examination regulations under Bachelor's or Master's thesis.

1. Illness/incapacity to take examinations

In the event of illness during the processing time, the deadline for submitting the thesis can be extended upon your (informal) request (to a maximum of twice the planned processing time). This requires the immediate submission of a medical certificate. This should state that you are unable to work on your thesis due to illness. A medical certificate stating that you are unable to take the examination is sufficient (a certificate of incapacity for work or a so-called "yellow certificate" does not fulfil this requirement ). Detailed information can be found on the website of the Examinations Office .

2. Previously unforeseen problems (especially by the professorship) in the processing of the topic

In exceptional cases, the examination board may extend the processing time by up to three weeks (only for Master's theses up to four weeks if the topic contains an empirical or experimental part) upon justified request.

For this purpose

• the request must be submitted to the Examination Board at least one week before the submission deadline
• the reason for the delay is related to the topic of the thesis
• the responsible supervisor must be in favour of the extension

To do this, describe - informally, but in writing - the reason that you believe is preventing you from submitting your thesis on time and submit this letter to the chair where you are writing your thesis. If or after the chair has approved your application (this can be done by separate informal confirmation to you or the responsible examination secretariat or as an addition to your letter), submit the application and approval to the examination secretariat.

The topic can only be returned once and only within two weeks of the start of the processing time. The processing time then begins again when the new topic is assigned.

As a rule, theses are written in German. It may be written in English with the consent of the examiner responsible for supervision.

The content and form of the thesis must fulfil the professional guidelines. The thesis must include a title page, a table of contents and a list of sources and references. As a rule, you will receive a format template from your supervising professor. The passages in the thesis that are taken from other works in terms of wording or meaning must always be labelled, stating the source of the borrowing.

The Bachelor's thesis can also be completed in the form of group work. The contribution of the individual student to be assessed as an examination achievement must be clearly distinguishable and assessable on the basis of the specification of sections, page numbers or other objective criteria that enable a clear delimitation.

You must add a written assurance to your work that you have written the work - in the case of group work, your appropriately labelled part of the work - independently and that you have not used any sources and aids other than those specified and that quotations have been identified and that the work has not been prepared, even in part, for another completed examination.

The final thesis can be repeated once if the performance is "unsatisfactory". A new topic with different content must be submitted.

The Writing Competence Centre regularly offers workshops on academic writing. They also organise writing events to motivate you to get started and keep going.

Orthography centre

The Orthography Centre offers workshops and consultations for students who want to refresh or expand their skills in the field of German spelling and/or gain confidence in the formal design of term papers and theses (correct bibliography, correct citation, etc.).

Submitting the thesis

You can submit your thesis either in print or digitally by the deadline specified in the letter of admission.

The printed copies of your thesis must be submitted to the Examinations Office. You can either send your thesis by post, the postmark of the post office is decisive for the submission date, or hand in your thesis directly to the Central Examination Office (Tuesdays to Thursdays, 09:30 to 11:30). Outside office hours, please do not put your thesis in the mailboxes outside the offices of the Examinations Office, but use the Service Centre or the gate opposite the library. If you hand in your thesis at the gate, please pack it in an envelope addressed to your examinations office.

The regulations governing the electronic submission of theses permit submission in electronic form instead of the submission of printed copies provided for in the examination regulations (and in deviation from the above). Please refer to the information and notes on formalities provided by the Central Examination Office .

Additional copies

Your supervising professorship may also request additional printed or digital copies. These must be submitted directly to the professorship or sent there.

Due to shortages in the supervision of Bachelor's theses as well as waiting times for evaluation, the department would like to ask students to take note of the following points:

Unfortunately, not all topic suggestions from students can be accepted ; students are asked to consider different possibilities in different areas and to discuss these with possible supervisors. It is not possible to look for a first or second supervisor (Erst- oder Zweitprüfer*in) with a finished paper!

Students are asked to make arrangements with possible supervisors at an early stage. In principle, we recommend holding initial discussions in the winter semester if you are planning to write in the summer.

We strongly recommend that students who are planning to do a Master's degree and receive BaFöG to have registered for the Bachelor's thesis by 15 June at the latest. The same applies to students whose visa is expiring or who need a quick grading for other reasons.

We urge students - also in their own interest - to consider the entire range of supervisors.

Registration Period

Thesis registration period for teacher education students.

The following thesis registration periods apply:

Bachelor's thesis:  November 1* through February 15 

Master's thesis: November 1*  through December 15 

*November of the year before you plan to receive your degree

When transitioning from your master's degree program to your student teaching internship [ Referendariat ], please observe the recommended exam schedules .

Before submitting your thesis, you must have worked on it for at least half the maximum working time allowed ( Does not apply to the B.A. EUCS ).

Deadline Extensions

Getting a deadline extension for thesis submission.

This information applies to the following degree programs: BA Educational Science, MA Educational Science: Bildung in Europa - Education in Europe, MA Culture – Language – Media, MA Transformation Studies, Master of Education (all school forms), and Master of Vocational Education.

If necessary, you can apply to extend the deadline for submitting your thesis. In an email to your first reviewer (Gutachter), please state your full name and student ID number and outline the reasons for your request. The reviewer will then contact us via email to confirm their agreement with the extension. We will immediately forward this email to the Examination Office (SPA). 

It is important that we receive your request no later than the scheduled submission date for your thesis. Once the university has processed your request, the deadline extension will show up in Studiport under "Info über angemeldete Prüfung | Information about Registered Exams."

For the B.A. European Cultures and Society , the follow information applies:   The examination board decides on the application for extension of the deadline to hand in the thesis. For that, you should write an email, directed to the examination board, explaining the reason for the extension request and the amount of time you would like to have the deadline extended – with a maximum of one month being allowed. Beforehand, you should talk to your supervisor about the extension and obtain their agreement. This agreement of the supervisor should be forwarded together with your request. The email requesting the extension of the deadline should be sent to spa.iim -PleaseRemoveIncludingDashes- @ uni-flensburg.de  with the first supervisor in CC.

Declaration of Academic Integrity

Declaration of academic integrity / declaration of original independent work.

A copy of the affidavit provided below must be included as the last page of your thesis. This declaration, through which you affirm that the work submitted is entirely your own work, must be bound into the body of the thesis. We have also included a sample (Muster) thesis cover sheet (Deckblatt) as an example of design and layout.

Submitting Your Thesis

When submitting your thesis on the scheduled date, please be careful to observe the examination regulations for your degree program. Take care to submit the right number of copies with an affixed electronic storage medium device. Also, be sure that you have actually bound the declaration of academic integrity into the body of your thesis (as the last page). Your thesis must have a permanent binding; ring bindings are not accepted!
