6. Competition

On this slide, you’ll describe your rivals — those firms or solutions that are currently addressing the issues you described above. Clearly show how various options to your company exist in the market.

Perform a SWOT Analysis for similar organizations and emphasize their distinct qualities. How does your firm distinguish itself from the competition? What makes your product or service stand out? Congrats! You’ve tackled the arduous task of writing a business plan . Now comes the next big hurdle – presenting that plan to potential funders. It would be nice if you could just hand them the plan so they can read it, fall in love with your vision, and give you money. But that’s just not how it works. 

You and your partners, if you have any, will likely need to present your plan. Investors, in particular, tend to expect a presentation with graphs and tables and persuasive projections of growth. Lenders, on the other hand, often just want to see the business plan, but you might prepare a presentation just in case. 

A presentation relays the main points of your vision and gives potential backers a sense of who you are. Thus, making a great presentation is often crucial to securing investor financing. Fortunately for you, this handy guide shows you how to do just that.  

  • Know Your Audience

Your business plan and presentation need to be tailored to your audience because they will have different goals. A lender, for example, wants to know that the business will have ample income and cash flow to make payments on the loan.

An investor, on the other hand, wants to be convinced that the business can grow significantly over three to five years. Investors typically want a five to ten times return on their money in that time period. That return will come from a successful exit of the business, which could be the acquisition of the business, a merger, or an initial public offering. 

So if you’re pitching to a lender, focus on income. If you’re pitching to an investor, focus on growth.

  • The Pitch Deck

A pitch deck can be tricky because you need to highlight the key points of your business plan in 15 to 20 slides. Each slide should contain as few words as possible and quickly get to the point. Include visuals such as charts and graphs, but don’t overdo it.

Here are the components of a good pitch deck.

  • Quick introduction of you and your partners. Don’t go into detail; names and titles are enough.
  • The business opportunity: what problem are you solving and for whom? Be sure to start here. 
  • Your product or service – what are you offering and why and how does it solve the market problem? Point out any differentiating features of your product or service.
  • Market summary – how big is the market, is it growing, and what trends are occurring?
  • Your competitive advantage – what will make your business stand out from the crowd? This is very important, so justify how you can create and sustain this advantage.
  • A summary of your marketing and sales strategy. Focus on value proposition, not tactics.
  • Any milestones you’ve achieved so far. If you’ve already had some big sales, be sure to spend some time highlighting them. 
  • Management summary – who will manage what and why are they qualified? Discuss their education and experience. Investors are very interested in the management team. They won’t invest in even the greatest idea if they don’t think the managers can execute.
  • 3-5 years of financial projections. Don’t go into too much detail, which is a common mistake. A summary of the key numbers will suffice. 
  • Your funding “ask:” how much do you need and for what? As a general rule, you should NOT talk about how much equity you’re offering if the presentation is to an investor. You’ll negotiate that later, and unfortunately, the investor tends to have the upper hand in that process.

Use your business plan as your guide to create the pitch deck. Be sure to highlight the most compelling points of your plan in your slides.

An important point is that you absolutely must write your business plan before creating your pitch deck. A business plan requires a great deal of time and research , and your presentation is merely a more concise, visual summary, so doing it the other way around is likely to fail. 

If time allows, after your presentation you could give a brief demonstration of your product. 

Be prepared for questions!

  • How to Present

First of all, you’re likely to have a limited time frame to make your presentation, maybe 15 to 20 minutes. Practice your presentation over and over to nail down your timing as well as any tricky phrases or concepts. Do a run-through for a few people you trust and listen to their feedback. 

When presenting, be confident but not arrogant. If you have areas that you need help with in your business, don’t be afraid to mention them. When they invest, investors are generally happy to offer guidance as well. 

Avoid tangents. Stay focused and be sure to get to all your important points. 

Spend the most time on the elements investors are most interested in: the business opportunity, competitive advantage, management team, and financial plan and projections.

Remember, you’re not just selling a business idea; you’re selling yourself and your ability to execute. Convince them that you can get it done and deliver. 

Answer any questions directly and honestly. Investors will know if you’re just blowing smoke.

Presenting your business plan is an important step in raising capital.

Making a business proposal presentation to prospective investors is stressful for nearly all entrepreneurs. Even if they are confident their business plan is well thought out, they still worry that they will not be able to express the most important aspects of their plan and engage the investors’ interest in the short time allotted for the in-person presentation. The keys to a successful presentation are advance preparation and rehearsal until your delivery is smooth and polished.

Preparing the Business Plan Presentation

Business plan presentations are designed to sell your idea to investors through a concise and engaging overview of what your business does, how it fills a consumer need and what you are looking for in terms of an investment. Seasoned investors are busy, and typically aren't interested in a long, drawn-out presentation filled with irrelevant information. In fact, many seasoned venture capitalists and angel investors will give you a specific time limit and a suggested outline for your presentation; if you receive these suggestions, it's a good idea to follow them. If you don't receive specific guidance, focus your presentation on the following key points:

  • Introduce yourself, your company and its products. 
  • Describe your market and how you solve your customers' problems. 
  • Explain how your product is different than anything else on the market.
  • Discuss the size of the market for your product
  • Explain who your customers are
  • Demonstrate growth in your market in the next 3-5 years 
  • Discuss the competitive advantages your venture has that will lead to outstanding revenue growth and profitability. 
  • Demonstrate your projected revenues and pretax profits for the next 3-5 years. 

Slides 9-10

  • Discuss your marketing strategies, including distribution channels and sales strategies

Slides 10 and beyond

  • Introduce your management team and advisory board members. Include one or two points about each person’s background and experience. and explain how each person on the team brings a critical element necessary for your company’s success.

Final slides

  • Reveal the total amount of capital you need and a short list of major expenditures.

By following this general outline and focusing on the most important information, you'll answer most of the investors' questions and give them the details they need to make a decision. Remember to only hit the highlights, and don’t try to fit your entire business plan into the presentation. Too many slides can result in information overload, and they will not remember the most important pieces of information. Aim for a business plan PowerPoint of about 10-12 slides.

Rehearsing Your Presentation

Once you've created the presentation, practice presenting it to ensure that you appear polished and professional come presentation day. Again, keep time limits in mind, and respect the investors' time. Don't forget to include time for questions in your overall presentation plan.

To begin rehearsing, create an outline of your the presentation, addressing the important points that you want to cover. If you are using presentation software like PowerPoint, print a copy of your presentation in outline view, and use that to identify the key points you want to make from each slide and jot down additional notes about what you want to say. Explain what life is like before your business arrives to provide a novel solution. Your next step is to explain the size of your market and what your business opportunity is. You’ll use the market research data from your business plan in this slide to show how many potential customers are out there and you’ll show the different market segments that your business will target . 

4. Business model and pricing strategy

Your business model is an explanation of how you make money. For many businesses, this is very straightforward and doesn’t require much, if any, explanation. For others, more details will be required. For example, a business like Google provides their search engine for free to users, but sells ads in the search results. 

5. Traction

Traction is evidence of early success with your business. This might mean a list of initial customers, pre-orders through a Kickstarter campaign, or signed contracts with potential buyers. Any evidence that you can provide that proves that your business will be a success is useful to showcase here. 

6. Marketing and sales

Be sure to include a slide that provides an overview of your marketing and sales plan . You’ve identified your target market and now you need to explain how you’re going to reach them and sell to them. 

7. Financial projections

You shouldn’t try and fit your entire financial plan into your business plan presentation. Instead, extract the highlights and present them here. Here are some unique elements that make a presentation stand out.

  • Fonts: Sans Serif fonts such as Helvetica or Arial are preferred for their clean lines, which make them easy to digest at various sizes and distances. Limit the number of font styles to two: one for headings and another for body text, to avoid visual confusion or distractions.
  • Colors: Colors can evoke emotions and highlight critical points, but their overuse can lead to a cluttered and confusing presentation. A limited palette of two to three main colors, complemented by a simple background, can help you draw attention to key elements without overwhelming the audience.

Break down different categories of target customers your business plans to serve. One category could be age. Another might be life situations such as retirees, parents, divorcees, or living with older relatives. You could create a segment of people with particular health conditions, or who live certain lifestyles.

But you can also get way more specific than that. Runners are different from hikers, who are different from bikers, yoga enthusiasts, and gym enthusiasts. Different supplements, philosophies about food, motivations for eating various foods — all of these present near endless possibilities for more narrowly defining your customer segments, all under the broad category of ‘health.’ And you might serve multiple segments.

Also, give a sense of the potential size of your target market. How many people need what you’re selling? Show how this market is large enough to justify your business and drive revenue. You must be able to promise something that no one else is currently delivering. Otherwise, why should your business exist? Put them at ease by demonstrating proper market research.

Refer to your SWOT analysis and present any potential threats from the competition here, too.

Outline management and organizational structure

Next, present your management and legal structure. Is your company an LLC, sole proprietorship, S corporation, partnership, or some other arrangement? Who’s in charge of what? If you have different departments, list out the leadership for each one. If relevant, you might even include some information about the expertise of your leaders concerning the areas under their charge and the tasks they’ll be performing.

Remember — if your business plan will be used to persuade investors to help fund your business idea, this sort of information will reassure them that your company has strong and competent leadership. 

If there’s a chain of command, use a diagram or other method for laying out who reports to whom.

List your products and services

What are you selling? You’ll touch on this briefly in the earlier sections, but here is where you’ll expand on the details. If you have an array of similar products, such as food flavors or clothing variations, list as many as seem relevant. But focus on the spirit of the business plan — you’re simply communicating what your business is about, not listing every SKU in your projected inventory. 

Also, include information about your products such as quality, durability, expirations, patents, and whatever else will give a clear picture of what you’re selling.

For service businesses and memberships that may include multiple packages, bundles, or tiers, describe each of these so your readers get a sense of how you’ll appeal to different types of customers and price points. 

Develop a sales and marketing strategy

Having products is great, but how do you intend to sell them? How will people find your business? How will anyone know you exist? And once they know, what will motivate them to buy from you and not from your competition? What is your unique value proposition — the thing that sets you apart from your direct competitors?

You’ll need to develop an initial marketing plan to help promote your business, products, and services to your target customers.

And remember, competition isn’t limited just to other businesses. Sometimes, competition is against the customer’s time, or their budget, or mere indifference — the conflict between doing something and doing nothing. Your SWOT analysis should touch on several of these potential barriers to the success of your online business.

Your marketing plan will obviously change over time, but give your readers and potential investors a sense of how you plan to launch and grow your business.

Discuss media channels you plan to use, such as pay-per-click (PPC) ads , social media , email marketing , affiliate marketing , direct mail, referrals, joint ventures, search engine optimization (SEO), webinars, influencer marketing , and live events. Describe the ones you actually plan to use, and explain the core strategy you’ll begin with and how you will measure success. 

Also, include a sense of your marketing budget. If you will have a dedicated marketing team, or actual sales professionals using a particular process or sales script, discuss that as well.

Make financial projections

You’ve made a lot of claims in your business plan, but how will your investors be convinced of your future success? At some point, you have to show them the money. 

If this is a brand new business with no income, where will your finances come from for the first year? Give realistic financial projections for anticipated profits and losses, as well as growth expectations for the first five years. Include financial documents if you have them, including profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements. Include costs of employment, manufacturing, and other investments both one-time and ongoing.

Your financial projections should reference your:

  • market analysis 
  • anticipated sales volume 

Investors will feel more confident when they can see your business plan does not rely entirely on just one or two ‘wins.’ For example, if your entire plan hinges on selling on eBay or Amazon , what happens if Amazon suspends your store, changes the terms, or you struggle to get noticed there? 

If your plan depends on winning over a few Instagram influencers, what if they don’t come through? It’s really easy to say what you hope will happen. But actually making it happen is another thing. Business success happens more easily when you apply a multi-channel marketing and sales approach. 

Your financial projections will feel based in reality, when you can demonstrate some prior successes, either in other businesses you’ve already launched, test audiences, local sales you made, prior experience, or data from other businesses. 

Explain your funding request — if applicable

If you intend to ask investors to help fund your business idea, present your request in the final main section of your business plan. If you’ve already secured funding from other sources, include that here as well. An investor will feel better knowing they are not the only one who believes in the potential of your business. 

Will your funding request be for a one-time payment, monthly, annually, or at some other interval? How do you plan to repay their investment? Will you allow them to charge interest? How much ROI can you promise them?

Here's how consultants aim to balance ideas in new Boone County Master Plan

B oone County's population continues to grow. People who live or move here are going to need somewhere to live, so the county has undertaken a process to update its nearly 30-year-old master plan .

Listening sessions this week have provided the public a chance to ask questions and give more feedback to The i5 Group, which along with other planning firms is aiding the county in collecting public input and collecting and analyzing data.

"We've projected that Boone County could need 37,000 units of new housing based on growth projections over the next 20 to 25 years," said Stephen Ibendahl, principal with The i5 Group, adding there are nuances to this projection.

Top issues among public input at a listening session Wednesday afternoon at the Boone County Government Center, 801 E. Walnut St., in Columbia, included housing density and requisite infrastructure, a possible codes review for building requirements, mixed uses of land and even adopting the Columbia-owned COLT rail line back into use more as trolley transit than goods transit.

An open house meeting from earlier in April and the listening sessions will help planner develop a draft master plan by the summer, based on the open house meeting presentation .

Previous meetings have led to three scenarios of which the county could adopt a mixture of elements into the master plan, Ibendahl said.

If the county were to focus on current trends, the additional housing would have an impact on about 50,000 of the county's available 440,000 acres.

"Current trends, especially with rural growth, is housing on larger lot sizes, so five acres as a popular lot size in rural areas," Ibendahl said, adding that growth cannot be accommodated within the city limits of Columbia, Ashland and Hallsville.

A city-focused scenario of putting more housing density (more up, than out) still would impact about 25,000 available acres.

If there was more rural growth and less restrictions on commercial and residential development, housing growth would impact about 58,000 acres.

"The three scenarios are not about picking one, but more about are there certain aspects you think would be beneficial or would have concerns about," Ibendahl said.

Public comments Wednesday were about finding balance and ways to get to housing closer to job sources. This included changing zoning to where residential is built closer to industrial, so as to eliminate travel barriers. In more rural areas use the idea of "agriburbia." In other words mixed used pockets of residential density, not as sprawling subdivisions, but neighborhoods of about a 10 or 15 single-family houses, duplexes or even apartments interspersed among crop land.

Boone County has minimum 10-acre lot sizes for residential and there were questions about how that comes up against issues as cities grow and may annex land. There also were comments on what does affordable vs. sustainable housing look like in more rural areas of the county.

Again, the next step in the process is presentation of a draft master plan by the summer. Plan refinement and final adoption is expected by the fall.
