The Benefits of Reading for Pleasure

Reading for fun has numerous lifelong benefits, and we have ideas for how you can promote this habit among your students.

Why don’t students read? Most teachers have the goal of promoting students’ lifelong love of reading. But why? And what can teachers and parents and librarians do to promote pleasure reading?

In our book Reading Unbound , Michael Smith and I argue that promoting pleasure reading is a civil rights issue. Data from major longitudinal studies show that pleasure reading in youth is the most explanatory factor of both cognitive progress and social mobility over time (e.g., Sullivan & Brown, 2013 [PDF]; Guthrie, et al, 2001 ; and Kirsch, et al, 2002 [PDF]). Pleasure reading is a more powerful predictor than even parental socioeconomic status and educational attainment.

So if we want our students to actualize their full potential as human beings and their capacity to participate in a democracy, and if we want to overcome social inequalities, we must actively promote pleasure reading in our schools, classrooms, and homes.

The Pleasures of Reading

Pleasure reading can be defined as reading that is freely chosen or that readers freely and enthusiastically continue after it is assigned. Our students (like all other human beings!) do what they find pleasurable. You get good at what you practice, and then outgrow yourself by deliberately developing new related interests and capacities.

In our study, we found that reading pleasure has many forms, and that each form provides distinct benefits:

Play pleasure/immersive pleasure is when a reader is lost in a book. This is prerequisite to experiencing all the other pleasures; it develops the capacity to engage and immerse oneself, visualize meanings, relate to characters, and participate in making meaning.
Intellectual pleasure is when a reader engages in figuring out what things mean and how texts have been constructed to convey meanings and effects. Benefits include developing deep understanding, proactivity, resilience, and grit.
Social pleasure is when the reader relates to authors, characters, other readers, and oneself by exploring and staking one’s identity. This pleasure develops the capacity to experience the world from other perspectives; to learn from and appreciate others distant from us in time, space, and experience; and to relate to, reciprocate with, attend to, and help others different from ourselves.
Work pleasure is when the reader develops a tool for getting something functional done—this cultivates the transfer of these strategies and insights to life.
Inner work pleasure is when the reader imaginatively rehearses for her life and considers what kind of person she wants to be and how she can connect to something greater or strive to become something more. When our study participants engaged in this pleasure, they expressed and developed a growth mindset and a sense of personal and social possibility.

Taken together, these pleasures explain why pleasure reading promotes cognitive progress and social possibility, and even a kind of wisdom and wholeness, and, in a larger sense, the democratic project.

Promoting the Pleasures of Reading

We need to help less engaged readers experience these same pleasures. That is our study’s major takeaway: We must make all five pleasures central to our teaching. We need to name them, actively model them, and then assist students to experience them.

To promote play pleasure, use drama techniques like revolving role play, in-role writing, and hot seating of characters in order to reward all students for entering and living through story worlds and becoming or relating to characters in the way that highly engaged readers do.

To promote intellectual pleasure, frame units as inquiry, with essential questions. Read a book for the first time along with your students—figure it out along with them, modeling your fits and starts and problems through think-alouds and discussion. Or pair an assigned reading with self-selected reading from a list, or a free reading choice that pertains to the topic. Use student-generated questions for discussion and sharing. Use discussion structures like Socratic seminar that make it clear there is no teacherly agenda to fulfill as far as topics or insights to achieve.

To promote social pleasure, be a fellow reader with students. Put a sign on your door: “Dr. Wilhelm is reading _____.” Read one of their favorite books. Foster peer discussion of reading and response in pairs, triads, small groups, literature circles, book clubs, etc. Do group projects with reading that are then shared and even archived. Have a free reading program and promote books through book talks, online reviews, etc.

To foster work pleasure, use inquiry contexts and work toward culminating projects, including service and social action projects.

To foster inner work pleasure, engage students in imaginative rehearsals for living, inquiry geared toward current and future action, or inquiry for service. Have students think as authors making choices and plan scenarios for characters in dilemmas or those trying to help the characters. Write to the future or to a future self.

Make no mistake, the next-generation standards worldwide require profound cognitive achievements. Meeting such standards and the demands of navigating modern life will require student effort and the honing of strategies over time. Promoting the power of pleasure reading is a proven path there.

Why reading is important for children’s brain development, children living in poverty show poorer brain development. but reading for pleasure may help counteract this..

Early childhood is a critical period for brain development , which is important for boosting cognition and mental well-being. Good brain health at this age is directly linked to better mental heath, cognition, and educational attainment in adolescence and adulthood. It can also provide resilience in times of stress.

But, sadly, brain development can be hampered by poverty. Studies have shown that early childhood poverty is a risk factor for lower educational attainment. It is also associated with differences in brain structure, poorer cognition, behavioral problems, and mental health symptoms.

This shows just how important it is to give all children an equal chance in life. But until sufficient measures are taken to reduce inequality and improve outcomes, our new study, published in Psychological Medicine , shows one low-cost activity that may at least counteract some of the negative effects of poverty on the brain: reading for pleasure.

Wealth and brain health

Higher family income in childhood tends to be associated with higher scores on assessments of language, working memory, and the processing of social and emotional cues. Research has shown that the brain’s outer layer, called the cortex, has a larger surface area and is thicker in people with higher socioeconomic status than in poorer people.

Being wealthy has also been linked with having more grey matter (tissue in the outer layers of the brain) in the frontal and temporal regions (situated just behind the ears) of the brain. And we know that these areas support the development of cognitive skills.

The association between wealth and cognition is greatest in the most economically disadvantaged families . Among children from lower-income families, small differences in income are associated with relatively large differences in surface area. Among children from higher-income families, similar income increments are associated with smaller differences in surface area.

Importantly, the results from one study found that when mothers with low socioeconomic status were given monthly cash gifts, their children’s brain health improved . On average, they developed more changeable brains (plasticity) and better adaptation to their environment. They also found it easier to subsequently develop cognitive skills.

Our socioeconomic status will even influence our decision making . A report from the London School of Economics found that poverty seems to shift people’s focus toward meeting immediate needs and threats. They become more focused on the present with little space for future plans—and also tended to be more averse to taking risks.

It also showed that children from low-socioeconomic-background families seem to have poorer stress coping mechanisms and feel less self-confident.

But what are the reasons for these effects of poverty on the brain and academic achievement? Ultimately, more research is needed to fully understand why poverty affects the brain in this way. There are many contributing factors that will interact. These include poor nutrition and stress on the family caused by financial problems. A lack of safe spaces and good facilities to play and exercise in, as well as limited access to computers and other educational support systems, could also play a role.

Reading for pleasure

There has been much interest of late in leveling up. So what measures can we put in place to counteract the negative effects of poverty that could be applicable globally?

Our observational study shows a dramatic and positive link between a fun and simple activity—reading for pleasure in early childhood—and better cognition, mental health, and educational attainment in adolescence.

We analyzed the data from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) project, a U.S. national cohort study with more than 10,000 participants across different ethnicities and and varying socioeconomic status. The dataset contained measures of young adolescents ages nine to 13 and how many years they had spent reading for pleasure during their early childhood. It also included data on their cognitive health, mental health, and brain health.

About half of the group of adolescents started reading early in childhood, whereas the others, approximately half, had never read in early childhood, or had begun reading later on.

We discovered that reading for pleasure in early childhood was linked with better scores on comprehensive cognition assessments and better educational attainment in young adolescence. It was also associated with fewer mental health problems and less time spent on electronic devices.

Our results showed that reading for pleasure in early childhood can be beneficial regardless of socioeconomic status. It may also be helpful regardless of the children’s initial intelligence level. That’s because the effect didn’t depend on how many years of education the children’s parents had had—which is our best measure for very young children’s intelligence (IQ is partially heritable).

We also discovered that children who read for pleasure had larger cortical surface areas in several brain regions that are significantly related to cognition and mental health (including the frontal areas). Importantly, this was the case regardless of socioeconomic status. The result therefore suggests that reading for pleasure in early childhood may be an effective intervention to counteract the negative effects of poverty on the brain.

While our current data was obtained from families across the United States, future analyses will include investigations with data from other countries—including developing countries, when comparable data become available.

So how could reading boost cognition exactly? It is already known that language learning, including through reading and discussing books, is a key factor in healthy brain development. It is also a critical building block for other forms of cognition, including executive functions (such as memory, planning, and self-control) and social intelligence.

Because there are many different reasons why poverty may negatively affect brain development, we need a comprehensive and holistic approach to improving outcomes. While reading for pleasure is unlikely, on its own, to fully address the challenging effects of poverty on the brain, it provides a simple method for improving children’s development and attainment.

Our findings also have important implications for parents, educators, and policymakers in facilitating reading for pleasure in young children. It could, for example, help counteract some of the negative effects on young children’s cognitive development of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns.

The love of reading is one of the greatest gifts an adult can give to a child. Pragmatically, reading proficiently helps with school work. But it also widens children’s horizons. It can help readers to understand their own world better, and to explore other worlds.

Parents often see reading as “school business” - something that teachers are responsible for. But there’s a lot of research that shows the value of reading at home and in the community . Children who read at home with parents or caregivers have an educational advantage that lasts their whole lives. In fact, reading to children helps them develop the language and literacy skills they need to begin formal literacy instruction.

Parents, as their children’s first and most important teachers, can make reading fun and inspire a lifelong love of reading. If parents themselves cannot read, others such as older siblings, friends and relatives can play this role.

Here, based on our own research studies about reading and drawing from the work being done by organisations dedicated to literacy, are some ideas to get kids reading for fun.

Reading as play

Children can have fun with reading even before they can read themselves. Reading feeds their fertile imaginations and they do the rest. In one of our research studies , pre-schooler Shafeek* spontaneously dressed up and acted out a story that his mother had read to him. Ashwariya* played “school” by “reading” a story to her toys. Again, she could not yet read but used the pictures and her memory for her game.

These examples show that reading can be made fun by linking it to play – through acting out, drawing pictures, dressing up, creating objects, or many other creative activities. Sometimes children do this on their own. But parents and teachers can also provide guided play activities.

Reading routines are important at home. This could take the form of “bedtime story”, reading prayers or verses from a sacred book, or regular weekend reading. Young children often love to hear the same story again and again. This is important for their emergent literacy as they learn how stories work, and how to “read” backwards and forwards.

Children enjoy singing songs and rhymes and this is a fun activity for reading development too. These allow children to play with words and sounds which is the first step in developing their phonological awareness , an integral skill to develop for reading.

Family reading

Children can have fun by joining in family reading activities. This could mean looking at advertisements and, even if they cannot yet read, identifying pictures of items. It could mean turning the pages of newspapers or magazines for a parent and learning how to hold a book the right way up. Family photo albums are also great for learning to “read” pictures and hear family stories. Children learn to respect and handle books by seeing their caregivers do so.

Above all, caregivers should read to their children as an activity that’s designed to make meaning with a focus on understanding.

One of the weaknesses of teaching reading at South African schools , for instance, is that it often does not focus on comprehension. Parents can make reading meaningful getting children to preview a text (look at the title, cover and pictures before they read) and guess what it will be about.

They can also ask questions as they read (“Why did she/he do that? Do you think it was the right thing? What do you think will happen next?”), link the story to children’s lives and experiences, and get them to make up their own endings.

Some older children enjoy keeping a “reading diary” of books they have read with their impressions. Reading can also be a prompt for writing their own stories. Creating and writing for a school newspaper or magazine can be great fun and can be adapted to suit the technology available in the school.

Reading their own texts

Reading is difficult but it can be made more accessible if children are presented with opportunities to develop their own texts to read. An example of this could be to write a story with the child and have them read it themselves. Such a text would consist of vocabulary familiar to the child and it would scaffold comprehension of reading. If children are involved in developing their own texts for reading, it becomes a personal and authentic experience based on their own interests and needs. Producing their own texts also gives children a sense of ownership that helps them to take responsibility for the process.

Finding the right stuff

While there is no shortage of children’s books in English, finding suitable reading material in African languages and about African contexts can be a problem.

Many public libraries stock such books. Nalibali has a great range of stories in South African languages. The Family Literacy Project has developed many wonderful ideas for developing reading, including box libraries, reading clubs and Umzali Nengane (Parent and Child) journals.

Paulo Freire , the great Brazilian educator, talked about “reading the word in order to read the world”. He showed how reading critically and creatively can help people change their lives and create a better world. Something so important should not be left to teachers alone.

People who feel alone in the world are often voracious readers. They’re looking for characters that make them feel like they belong, like “their people” really do exist. Five Reasons Reading for Fun Will Make You a Better Student (in Any Discipline)

1. People who read regularly are less likely to make grammar mistakes in their own writing. There’s a definite link between the amount of time students spend reading other people’s work and the number of grammar errors present in their own. In many ways, this relationship is simply logical; it makes sense that exposure to properly-structured sentences and paragraphs will make it easier to follow these same rules when you sit down to write. Similarly, if you’re constantly reading texts with few to no errors, your own mistakes will start to stand out to you--even if you can’t explain exactly what rule you’ve violated, you’ll get the intuitive sense that something is wrong. Earlier this year, I spoke to many students who were struggling to properly format sections of dialogue in their narrative essays. If you rarely read novels, the rules that govern the positioning of quotation marks, commas, and periods in transcribed speech can definitely be difficult to follow. However, if you’ve spent a lot of time reading fiction books filled with conversation between characters, you’ll likely find that imitating the grammar rules followed by these authors comes as second nature to you. Formatting dialogue is just one example, though--the grammar skills you pick up through reading recreationally are just as beneficial to students writing lab reports or annotated bibliographies.

2. Reading can dramatically expand your vocabulary. Have you ever found yourself in a position where you have a complicated point to express in a paper and, although you understand what you want to say in your own mind, you just can’t find the words to get the idea across? Studies have shown a clear link between the frequency with which people read and the size of their vocabularies (Wiesen). Reading exposes you to a range of new words and often provides the necessary context for you to determine their meanings without needing to look up definitions, so you may find your vocabulary expanding without even realizing that this process is occurring. As you can imagine, a large vocabulary makes it much easier to express complex ideas in a clear, accessible way. Relatedly, reading a diversity of writers can expose you to different writing styles and allow you to assess which ones appeal to you most and which seem most effective for certain forms of communication; for instance, you may find that a direct, blunt writing style serves well for a persuasive essay, while a style with more complex sentences is effective for a descriptive paper. Regardless of what field you study, a broad vocabulary and a sense of how best to use it will be hugely advantageous when completing assignments.

3. Reading books unrelated to your post-secondary studies can diversify your knowledge base and develop your interest in new subjects. In general, I don’t consider myself someone with a particular interest in history. However, I do love feel-good books about the American south, so I recently read Fannie Flagg’s novel The All-Girl Filling Station’s Last Reunion . One of the characters in this book is a member of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) of World War II, and I found myself completely drawn in by the historical details about these female pilots who endured discrimination and disenfranchisement while training pilots and ferrying planes. After I’d finished the book, I spent a long time scouring the internet for more information about the WASPs, and I know I’ll be more open-minded about studying this period of American history in the future. This reaction is representative of the ways in which reading novels can expand your horizons, exposing you to concepts and life experiences of which you might never have become aware. Students often have difficulty with open-ended assignments where professors give them free reign to research a subject they’re interested in, as long as they follow certain guidelines. Without a list of topics to choose from, it can be difficult to find a subject that both interests the student and seems relevant to the assignment. However, avid readers are exposed to such a diverse array of subject matter that they’ve likely developed curiosities about a number of complex topics and would be eager to learn more while fulfilling an academic requirement. For instance, someone who’d recently read the Canadian graphic novel Tangles might choose to learn more about Alzheimer's for a psychology project, while a student who’d enjoyed Jenny Downham’s Unbecoming might write a sociology paper about the experiences of LGBTQ+ teens in high school. Expanding your worldview and learning about a diverse array of subjects is beneficial in any context, but it’s particularly helpful for university students.

4. Reading full-length books improves your ability to focus for extended periods of time. Recent studies have indicated that, on a typical day, as many as 70% of students come to class not having done the assigned reading (Gooblar). Often, the factors preventing students from reading assigned texts are practical in nature; for instance, it may be necessary to prioritize the completion of a major assignment over the reading of an article that will be briefly discussed in class. However, it is also common for students to have the time for readings but lack the attention span to complete them. The human attention span is fairly short, and research indicates that it has been shrinking in recent years (Watson). When students are accustomed to receiving information in short bursts, it can be difficult to plow through a lengthy textbook chapter or a full novel for a literature course. However, students who read recreationally are accustomed to setting aside long blocks of time to focus on a certain text. They’ve learned what conditions make reading most comfortable for them, and they’ve likely developed strategies to maintain concentration. Therefore, when it comes time to read something for a class, they simply have to apply the strategies they use during self-motivated reading. If you develop a reading habit, you’ll likely find that completing your assigned readings seems like a less overwhelming task. You may also notice improved focus while writing assignments or attending lectures; after all, an extended attention span has wide-ranging benefits.

5. Reading recreationally can improve your critical thinking skills. A study conducted in 2012 found a positive correlation between voluntary reading and high scores on critical thinking tests (Hawkins). This result is not unexpected. Although relaxing with a fiction book is different than rigorously studying an academic text, you’re still required to exercise the skills that come into play during the act of critical thinking. Reading a novel requires you to keep track of a range of characters and their relationships in order to properly understand the progression of the plot. Often, subtle clues dropped by the author serve to foreshadow developments later in the book, and readers must be attentive to these to fully appreciate how the story unfolds. Furthermore, when you’re engrossed in a compelling novel, you may find yourself trying to predict what plot twists are on the horizon or use the information you’ve been given about a character to understand why they would make a seemingly illogical decision. All of these mental exercises are examples of critical thinking, and you’ll likely find that, the more time you spend reading, the more naturally they take place. As your critical thinking skills strengthen, you’ll become more adept at interpreting texts of all kinds, including academic texts which you must analyze for class.

Reading recreationally isn’t just an entertaining pastime--it’s also a great way to sharpen your academic skills and become a more effective student. Whether you’re reading non-fiction books, romance novels, or the latest dystopian series that’s taken pop culture by storm, the benefits are undeniable. However, for students who have never taken a strong interest in literature, it can be difficult to cultivate a reading habit. Next time, we’ll discuss a helpful tool that can make it easier to start reading for pleasure and remain committed to the habit.

Reading for Fun as a College Student

This was my living room my final year in Eugene. That bookshelf next to the fireplace is one of two sets of books: this one the "fun set." I had another whole bookshelf dedicated to text books and "serious books" of various kinds. And yes, that is an entire shelf of Stephen King there at the bottom.

I’m sure you could have guessed already that I’m something of a book lover. A full-blown bibliophile/book-nerd would be the more accurate description. I have loved books my whole life, and have read piles of them over the years. Old acquaintances from late elementary/early middle school could attest to my days walking around the hallways with my nose in a book. One of the first times I remember being in trouble as a student was in 5th grade, when my teacher caught me with my novel propped up inside the larger hardcover history text. I was apologetic and horrified to be caught, but then (as now), I argued that since I had already finished the assignment, that in-class reading time should be my own.

That same spirit has stuck with me over the years. For those who truly love reading for pleasure, college can be a bit of a shock to the system as they suddenly have to re-calibrate all the reading they would like to be doing with the reading they have to be doing. Sometimes, of course, these will overlap: some assigned readings have proven to be life-changing texts for me, and ones I have carried with me and re-read over the years. But depending on your speed of reading and the sometimes overwhelming quantity of reading assignments , you might find yourself at something of a deficit for free time for reading in college. I hope not, but you might.

I am one of those people who believe that reading is a necessity for healthy and balanced living. It relaxes and inspires me more than almost any other activity. Certainly more than TV or a movie, which, unless spent in the company of friends, is just more time spent by myself behind yet another screen.

I’m one of those people who goes absolutely nuts in a library, pulling stacks of books off the shelves and paging through them before receiving disbelieving looks from librarians and adding a fresh set to the already-teetering pile of aspiring “next reads” beside my bed. I love the sense of potential in a book I’ve never read before, and I love the old friends quality in an old standby when I settle in to re-read again.

Books helped me form who I am and how I see the world. Science fiction, literary fiction, nonfiction, sociological theory, philosophy, horror, poetry, classics, memoir, fantasy, and even the occasional advice/self-help kind of book. I do not love all books. But I love a broad spectrum of books, and the vicarious adventures contained within their pages.

This passion didn’t change when I went to college.

My freshman year, I used to bring a stack of books upstairs to my friends’ dorm room to do homework in the evenings (this being prompted by the hostile environment with my roommate, as previously mentioned ). I would work through the next day’s assigned reading or do some research for an upcoming essay. Then, when work was finished and in between long conversations with my friends, I would read my novels.

These were happy, peaceful islands of time in the midst of my busy university life.

Since 2004, I have kept track of the books I read. I’ve previously mentioned that I’m a big believer in writing things down —everything from journaling to manic list making to note-taking on the new semester’s syllabus . I also write down the books I read. I wish I’d begun this habit when I was much younger, but I suppose I’m grateful for the years I have recorded. For almost ten years now I have recorded nearly every book I read (I think a few have slipped through the cracks now and then, but for the most part they’re all present and accounted for). Here are my arbitrary rules for tracking my reading:

To count, a book must be read cover to cover. No partial credit.
Previously read books DO count.
Assigned reading/homework DOES count.
Books on tape DO count.
Children’s books do not count, although the old favorites in the young adult genre do.

This is not a competition. Well…not anymore, anyway. When I first started keeping track my mom and I would race and there were a couple of years when I was reading frantically up to New Year’s Eve, trying to get in a final tally before the year ticked over and the list began again. I think she beat me most years.

2006 was my senior year of high school/freshman year of college. Although I had the leisure of a long, long summer (Colorado high schools graduate early, the University of Oregon is a really late starter), I was also at one of the busiest times of my life between AP classes my senior year and all the settling-in work of the first year of college.

I read 140 books in 2006

That year I read Malcolm Gladwell, the Lord of the Rings trilogy (for what must have been the 7th or 8th time), the Epic of Gilgamesh , Anne Lamott, Jon Stewart’s America (The Book) , several poetry anthologies, Jonathan Safran Foer, a ridiculous quantity of Stephen King, Alice Walker, Margaret Atwood, and a series of “comfort reads” from my teenaged years—from Tamora Pierce to Gary Paulson. 2006 was a great year for books.

That year, when I was in a particular period of stress and transition, was a particularly voracious time for reading.

I guess the point of this blog post is to just say that being in college does not have to mean you stop reading.

My reading has slowed down since the bumper crop of 2006. What eventually calmed my appetite to a certain extent was when I began to travel. Then I discovered podcasts . After that I took on more leadership roles on campus and in community volunteering. The year I graduated, 2010, I read only 77 books. But those books helped me through my internships, thesis writing, graduate school applications, and all the everyday stress and drama of roommates, jobs, and relationships.

College is hard. I encourage you to nurture practices that feed your mind and energy. If it happens to be reading, then find the time to allow yourself the luxury of reading for fun. Whatever genre that happens to be, know that it’s worth the time you spend allowing you imagination to roam and your creative self to be nurtured by another person’s storytelling.

Reading for pleasure should be just that. It so happens that Charles Dickens and Stephen King both serve that purpose for me.

Effective Teaching of Reading in Education Essay

Effective teaching of reading is an important aspect as reading does not come as naturally as speaking. Children do not learn how to read just by being exposed to reading materials, but rather, for them to learn this important skill, they ought to be taught explicitly and systematically.

To start with, it is important to establish the main aim of teaching reading as there are several reasons why a learner can read. For instance, one can read in order to develop his/her knowledge of the language of instruction or for fun. An individual may also read for the purpose of gathering information or for confirming the authenticity of the knowledge at hand or even to critically assess someone’s thoughts or style of writing.

Establishing the intention of reading affects the most effective method of comprehension reading. For instance, in case a person is reading a particular poem for the purpose of gratification, he/she is only required to make out the words used by the poet and the manner in which they are presented and has no need to classify the subject of the poem.

On the other hand, in case an individual uses a scientific article with the aim of supporting a certain outlook, one requires to have been exposed to the terminologies being used. He/she should also comprehend the specific information as well as the cause-effect cycle of the information presented. This encompasses the main objective of teaching reading to learners in our learning institutions.

In the past, my main failure in teaching reading was mainly attributed to my presumption of the aim of learning how to read in a language, which I viewed as merely to get the content written in a given lingo. During that time, I mainly restricted teaching reading to literary texts that indicated a deep affiliation to culture.

However, this approach was wrong because it presupposed that students learn to read in a particular language only through learning its terminologies, words and sentence structures, but not by actually reading it, which ignores the aspect of communicative competence.

However, as a result of learning the importance of communicative approach and applying it in the teaching of reading, I have had a better perception of the role of reading as well as the types of texts to be applied in teaching reading in any given language, as a result of which I have succeeded in this endeavor.

When a teacher’s main objective of teaching reading encompasses communicative competence, diverse reading materials such as newspapers, comprehension text books as well as internet should be used. This is because exposing the learners to diverse reading materials develops their communicative competence tremendously. For this reason, we cannot separate instruction in reading from reading practice at any one time.

As an instructor of reading skills, I plan to lay out some comprehension strategies that my learners will employ in order to reap maximum benefits from any given texts in future. This way, the learners will learn to become dynamic and focused readers who can manage reading comprehension on their own.

The strategies include instruction on comprehension monitoring where I will teach the learners on how to be aware of what they understand and make out whatever they do not comprehend as well as employ suitable means of solving comprehension problems. In addition,

I will expose the learners to metacognition skills which will require them to have control over their reading and establish the purpose of reading prior to the reading process, while establishing the hurdles they encounter in understanding a particular comprehension. Furthermore, I will teach the learners on how to make use of semantic as well as graphic organizers for effective understanding.

These include diagrams as well as subject words that are crucial in understanding any comprehension. Other important aspects that I plan to teach include formulating and answering comprehension questions, elaborating the structure of the story as well as summarizing the main components of a given comprehension.

In conclusion, even though a teacher is crucial in instructing effective comprehension skills, the benefits can only be achieved through cooperative learning. Learners should work hand in hand with each other in order to comprehend texts. Besides, they should also employ the given strategies of comprehension reading. We as the instructors should assist the learners to work in groups and model the reading strategies to them.

If you had told me that “Dragon’s Dogma 2” was a remaster or remake of the first game from 2012, I’d believe you. When I played this game, memories of my teenage years flooded back into my head. The unique side quests and fun real-time action combat were just as I remembered, but I also recalled all the problems I had with its lack of quality of life options.

One of the Capcom title’s greatest strengths is that its side quests unfold organically, often popping up when you’re just strolling through town. When I reached the beast nation of Battahl, someone greeted me as soon as I stepped into the palace. Apparently, one of the servants discovered a plot to assassinate the empress, and I agreed to try and find the killer.

To my surprise, I failed to sniff them out in time despite having a physical description, and the empress perished. Emergent moments like these add strong world building and keep you excited about what could potentially come next in your adventure.

What really wears you down, however, is the asinine amount of backtracking between different locations. The game’s main fast travel options are oxtail carts and ferrystones. The former only seems available in larger towns while the latter are consumable items that let you return to those towns from anywhere on the map — but they’re expensive.

This was exactly how it was in the first game, and while this provides a level of immersion, it gets very old, very fast, especially if you’re trying to complete side quests in smaller regions.

What makes traveling on foot incredibly frustrating is that the Arisen’s stamina meter depletes rather quickly when you’re running. Annoyingly, I would always have a brief burst of speed, followed by a period of brisk jogging while waiting for the meter to fill up again. I just wish there was some sort of improvement there from its predecessor: perhaps the stamina meter only depleting while running in combat?

There are some new Vocations as well, such as the Mystic Spearhand. This class wields a double-bladed magical spear and pulls off some cool acrobatic moves like jumping into the air and slamming the spear into the ground. It’s really fun to switch Vocations every once in a while to experiment and find one that best fits your playstyle.

The series’ Pawn system still works great too. Pawns are AI controlled teammates to accompany and fight alongside the Arisen. You get to create your own Pawn as well as recruit two others for a full party of four. Pawns can be found walking past you during the game, or you can even call upon the ones that other players have made, including your own friends’ pawns. While there’s no direct multiplayer or co-op, this mechanic is a great way to encourage camaraderie amongst other players.

Unlike the first game, Dragon’s Dogma 2 features a truly seamless world, with the only loading screens appearing when you open up your game or reload to a previous checkpoint after dying.

The increased power from PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S definitely helped out here, but the game sometimes looks like it belongs to the previous generation of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

While there’s spectacular graphical details in a giant griffin’s wings or a dragon’s scales, as well as the pre-rendered cinematic cutscenes, the environments and character model graphics aren’t nearly as impressive as Capcom’s other recent releases like 2023’s Resident Evil 4 remake or even 2019’s Devil May Cry 5 . Sometimes, technical issues occur and textures are missing, making the game look uglier.

I do want to give a shout out to the game’s soundtrack. As a very western-inspired game, Capcom’s Japanese origins make it stand out. From soothing pianos in the main menu to energizing electric guitars and epic chants during its biggest battles, the game has a very eclectic array of songs curated by sound director Ryo Yoshi and lead composer Satoshi Hori.

“Dragon’s Dogma 2” feels stagnant in ways where I thought that I was playing a game from the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 era almost 15 years ago, not one from the current generation of consoles in 2024. Certain mechanics haven’t evolved from the first game and the graphics are sometimes disappointing. Still, the side quest structure and combat hold up after all this time. “Dragon’s Dogma 2” simultaneously kept the strongest aspects of its predecessor while failing to remedy the shortcomings.

A conservative social media influencer has been arrested on misdemeanor charges related to her involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol, including an accusation that she helped to steal a table that the F.B.I. says was used to assault officers, according to court documents .

The influencer, Isabella M. DeLuca, 24, of Setauket, N.Y., was arrested on Friday in Irvine, Calif., in Orange County, on several charges, including theft of government property, entering a restricted building, disorderly conduct and demonstrating in a Capitol building.

Ms. DeLuca participated in and livestreamed the riot, in which an angry mob attacked the Capitol, and helped steal a table that was used as a weapon against law enforcement, according to a complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

After Ms. DeLuca “passed the table out of the window,” according to the complaint, she appeared to use her cellphone to record video or take photographs of rioting. She later deleted several social media posts relating to the attack in a likely “attempt to thwart any subsequent criminal investigation,” according to the complaint, which was prepared by an F.B.I. agent.

Ms. DeLuca could not immediately be reached for comment on Monday, and it was unclear from court documents if she had a lawyer. She is a registered Republican, according to public records, and has more than 334,000 followers on X and 125,000 followers on Instagram . On Monday, she posted a message to X thanking her followers for the “kind messages and the support” and linking to a fund-raiser for her legal defense. An earlier post quoted a Psalm from the Bible: “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?”

Ms. DeLuca was released the day of her arrest, her mother, Gina DeLuca, said by phone on Monday. She declined to comment on the charges or her daughter’s case.

Until Monday, Ms. DeLuca had been an unpaid volunteer media associate at the Gold Institute for International Strategy, a research organization in Washington focused on national security issues, its president, Eli M. Gold, said. She was hired for the role last May. The institute was unaware that she had been facing criminal charges until being contacted by reporters on Monday, Mr. Gold said. “Following further internal investigation, we felt it necessary to sever our relationship,” he added.

Ms. DeLuca’s other experience included congressional internships with Representative Paul Gosar of Arizona and former Representative Lee Zeldin of New York, both Republicans, The Associated Press reported. A spokesman for Mr. Zeldin said that Ms. DeLuca had briefly been an unpaid volunteer working with a staff member in the congressman’s Long Island district and that neither Mr. Zeldin or members of his staff had been aware that she was at the Capitol during the riot.

According to the complaint, Ms. DeLuca first came to the attention of the F.B.I. three days after the attack when the agency received a tip that she had deleted social media posts related to her involvement in the riot. In an interview with the F.B.I. on Jan. 21, 2021, Ms. DeLuca admitted to having been at the Capitol on Jan. 6, but denied entering the building. Her mother confirmed the account to the agency, and said she had watched her daughter’s Instagram livestream from outside the Capitol, according to the complaint.

Subpoenaed bank records showed that Ms. DeLuca traveled to Washington from New York City by train on Jan. 5, 2021 and made a purchase at a Dunkin’ Donuts two miles from the Capitol the day of the riot, the F.B.I. said.

Just before 3 p.m. on Jan. 6, 2021, Ms. DeLuca wrote on social media : “Fight back or let politicians steal and election? Fight back!” Shortly after, she sent a private message to another user on Instagram confirming she was heading to the Capitol, the F.B.I. said. Surveillance footage also placed her there, the agency said.

The footage showed Ms. DeLuca entering the Capitol through a broken window, where she and other rioters removed a coffee table worth more than $600 and passed it to others outside through another broken window, the F.B.I. said. She continued taking photos as other rioters continued stealing furniture, including a lamp and a chair, and passing them to the rioters outside.

“The table legs were broken off at some point in the melee,” according to the complaint, and one of them was used by a rioter to attack a law enforcement officer. Another rioter appeared to use the table itself to attack law enforcement, the F.B.I. said.

Just before 6 p.m., Ms. DeLuca, according to the complaint, “messaged an acquaintance on Instagram, ‘It’s insanity here’ and ‘I got maced and had a sound bomb go off right next to me.’” She continued posting about the attack on social media over the next several days.

“I was there on Jan. 6. I have mixed feelings,” she wrote on Jan. 14, the F.B.I. said. She added: “People went to the Capitol building because that’s Our House and that’s where we go to take our grievances. People feel, as do I that an election was stolen from them and it was allowed.”

Ms. DeLuca is among more than 1,350 people who have been charged in connection with the Jan. 6 attack, in which an angry mob, egged on by President Donald J. Trump’s lies about the 2020 election being stolen, attempted to halt the certification of the results. Federal prosecutors have described the ongoing criminal investigation into the events of that day as the largest in the history of the Justice Department.

‘You don’t want to get better’: the outdated treatment of ME/CFS patients is a national scandal

From harmful ‘therapies’ to social services referrals, the notion that this illness is psychosomatic is having devastating effects

I t’s the greatest medical scandal of the 21st century. For decades, patients with ME/CFS (myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome) have been told they can make themselves better by changing their attitudes. This devastating condition, which afflicts about 250,000 people in the UK, was psychologised by many doctors and scientists, adding to the burden of a terrible physiological illness.

Long after this approach was debunked in scientific literature, clinicians who championed it have refused to let go . They continue to influence healthcare systems, governments and health insurers. And patients still suffer as a result.

ME/CFS saps sufferers of energy and basic physical and cognitive functions, confining many to their homes or even their beds, often shutting down their working lives, social lives and family lives. The extreme seriousness of this condition, and the fact that there is neither a diagnostic test nor a validated treatment, places a special duty of rigour on doctors and researchers. But patient care has been compromised, and useful research inhibited, by the lingering conviction of many practitioners that ME/CFS is “psychosocial”: driven by patients’ beliefs and behaviour.

This was a story that found me. In 2021, after writing about long Covid , I was accused by the psychiatrist Prof Michael Sharpe of spreading it . Apparently, you could induce such illnesses by discussing them. Investigating further, I was astonished by the failure in his presentation to support his claim with evidence, and perturbed by his lack of satisfactory answers to my questions. Sharpe takes a similarly “biopsychosocial” approach to ME/CFS, one which at the time of his long Covid presentation still dominated medical practice in the UK.

You can trace the origins of this model to a paper published in 1970 . Without assessing a single patient or interviewing a single doctor, it blamed an earlier outbreak of post-viral ME/CFS on “mass hysteria” based on case notes alone. The reasoning included the fact that the outbreak affected more women than men. For centuries, doctors have been readier to classify women’s illnesses as hysterical or psychosomatic than they have men’s. ME/CFS, like long Covid , hits women harder , so, the thinking goes, it must be all in the mind .

Freedom of information requests to the National Archives show how the biopsychosocial model became embedded in research practice and government policy. The minutes of a meeting on government benefits policy in 1993 give a sense of the position of the psychiatrist Simon Wessely at the time. As summarised in the minutes, he told the meeting that ME/CFS is “not a neurological disorder”. He reportedly claimed that apparently severe cases were likely to result from either a “misdiagnosed psychiatric disorder or poor illness management”, while many cases were “iatrogenic”: caused by medical examination or treatment. His views were apparently that “the worst thing to do is to tell them to rest”, “exercise is good for these patients”, “most cases can be expected to improve with time” and, perhaps most shockingly, “benefits can often make patients worse”.

Every one of these claims now appears to be without foundation. But they became the basis of the dominant approach in this country to attempting to treat ME/CFS. The toll of patient suffering is hard to imagine.

In 2007 this belief system became official guidance : the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) advocated two treatments arising from the biopsychosocial model of the disease: graded exercise therapy (GET) and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). In 2011, a major study, the Pace trial , part-funded by the Department for Work and Pensions, claimed to show that GET and CBT were effective in treating ME/CFS. The study later turned out to be biased and profoundly flawed .

The believers were championed by the Science Media Centre , of which (now Professor Sir) Simon Wessely was a founder member. Some of the media’s reporting , influenced by the centre, portrayed ME/CFS patients as abusive, threatening , workshy and resistant to treatment .

As the doctrine spread through the medical profession, some practitioners adopted the same attitudes. A paper promoting psychological treatments lamented the “difficult challenge of … managing patients’ resistance to the treatment”, which arose from “lack of acceptance as to the rationale”. Nurses observed that “the patient should be grateful and follow your advice [but] the patient is quite resistant and there is this thing like you know, ‘The bastards don’t want to get better’.”

We now know that patients were right to resist interventions that have proved to be both useless and harmful. The impacts were often horrific. A study in Switzerland found that the most powerful factor contributing to suicidal thoughts among people with ME/CFS was “being told the disease was only psychosomatic”.

Some patients were forced into these treatment regimes , even locked in psychiatric units to make them comply. Some parents of children with ME/CFS were referred to social services for supposedly encouraging their belief that they were ill. Though unevidenced, the biopsychosocial model influenced the government’s social security policy , reinforcing its coercive treatment of people seeking disability benefits.

In 2020, an independent review by Nice found that the quality of all the research promoting GET and CBT was either “low” or – mostly – “very low”. A paper reported that the thresholds in the 2011 Pace study at which patients were deemed to have recovered had been altered after the trial began . Several studies concluded that GET was actively harmful , as the exercise regime it promoted could worsen patients’ symptoms , causing post-exertional malaise. One paper reported that it was detrimental to the health of at least 50% of patients .

As a result, in 2021 Nice concluded that GET and CBT should not be used to treat ME/CFS (though more conventional CBT can help patients with the psychological impacts of the illness). Similar shifts had already happened in the United States and the Netherlands . The condition is now correctly recognised as a physiological illness. Last month, a paper in the journal Nature Communications proposed a possible physiological mechanism for the condition.

But some people never give up. Despite an overwhelming weight of evidence, the old believers, including Sharpe and Wessely, have continued to try to justify their model , obliging Nice recently to publish a strong refutation . Protected by powerful friends in the media, they could breathe life into their hypothesis long after it had been debunked. The new evidence-led thinking has yet to penetrate parts of the health system: some patients are still being mistreated .

This is not how science should work. Beliefs should be based on evidence. In medicine, there is a double duty: respect the evidence and listen to patients. There is a psychological intervention that could improve the lives of people with ME/CFS: an apology and recognition of the harms they have suffered.

In the days after October 7, the writer and translator Joanna Chen spoke with a neighbor in Israel whose children were frightened by the constant sound of warplanes. “I tell them these are good booms,” the neighbor said to Chen with a grimace. “I understood the subtext,” Chen wrote later in an essay published in Guernica magazine on March 4, titled “From the Edges of a Broken World.” The booms were, of course, the Israeli army bombing Gaza, part of a campaign that has left at least 30,000 civilians and combatants dead so far.

But the conversation with the neighbor is a sharp, novelistic, and telling moment. The mother, aware of the perversity of recasting bombs killing children mere miles away as “good booms,” does so anyway because she is a mother, and her children are frightened. The act, at once callous and caring, will stay with me.

Not with the readers of Guernica , though. The magazine , once a prominent publication for fiction, poetry, and literary nonfiction, with a focus on global art and politics, quickly found itself imploding as its all-volunteer staff revolted over the essay. One of the magazine’s nonfiction editors posted on social media that she was leaving over Chen’s publication. “Parts of the essay felt particularly harmful and disorienting to read, such as the line where a person is quoted saying ‘I tell them these are good booms.’” Soon a poetry editor resigned as well, calling Chen’s essay a “horrific settler normalization essay”— settler here seeming to refer to all Israelis, because Chen does not live in the occupied territories. More staff members followed, including the senior nonfiction editor and one of the co-publishers (who criticized the essay as “a hand-wringing apologia for Zionism”). Amid this flurry of cascading outrage, on March 10 Guernica pulled the essay from its website, with the note: “ Guernica regrets having published this piece, and has retracted it. A more fulsome explanation will follow.” As of today, this explanation is still pending, and my request for comment from the editor in chief, Jina Moore Ngarambe, has gone unanswered.

Blowups at literary journals are not the most pressing news of the day, but the incident at Guernica reveals the extent to which elite American literary outlets may now be beholden to the narrowest polemical and moralistic approaches to literature. After the publication of Chen’s essay, a parade of mutual incomprehension occurred across social media, with pro-Palestine writers announcing what they declared to be the self-evident awfulness of the essay (publishing the essay made Guernica “a pillar of eugenicist white colonialism masquerading as goodness,” wrote one of the now-former editors), while reader after reader who came to it because of the controversy—an archived version can still be accessed—commented that they didn’t understand what was objectionable. One reader seemed to have mistakenly assumed that Guernica had pulled the essay in response to pressure from pro-Israel critics. “Oh buddy you can’t have your civilian population empathizing with the people you’re ethnically cleansing,” he wrote, with obvious sarcasm. When another reader pointed out that he had it backwards, he responded, “This chain of events is bizarre.”

Some people saw anti-Semitism in the decision. James Palmer, a deputy editor of Foreign Policy , noted how absurd it was to suggest that the author approved of the “good bombs” sentiment, and wrote that the outcry was “one step toward trying to exclude Jews from discourse altogether.” And it is hard not to see some anti-Semitism at play. One of the resigning editors claimed that the essay “includes random untrue fantasies about Hamas and centers the suffering of oppressors” (Chen briefly mentions the well-documented atrocities of October 7; caring for an Israeli family that lost a daughter, son-in-law, and nephew; and her worries about the fate of Palestinians she knows who have links to Israel).

Madhuri Sastry, one of the co-publishers, notes in her resignation post that she’d earlier successfully insisted on barring a previous essay of Chen’s from the magazine’s Voices on Palestine compilation. In that same compilation, Guernica chose to include an interview with Alice Walker, the author of a poem that asks “Are Goyim (us) meant to be slaves of Jews,” and who once recommended to readers of The New York Times a book that claims that “a small Jewish clique” helped plan the Russian Revolution, World Wars I and II, and “coldly calculated” the Holocaust. No one at Guernica publicly resigned over the magazine’s association with Walker.

However, to merely dismiss all of the critics out of hand as insane or intolerant or anti-Semitic would ironically run counter to the spirit of Chen’s essay itself. She writes of her desire to reach out to those on the other side of the conflict, people she’s worked with or known and who would be angered or horrified by some of the other experiences she relates in the essay, such as the conversation about the “good booms.” Given the realities of the conflict, she knows this attempt to connect is just a first step, and an often-frustrating one. Writing to a Palestinian she’d once worked with as a reporter, she laments her failure to come up with something meaningful to say: “I also felt stupid—this was war, and whether I liked it or not, Nuha and I were standing at opposite ends of the very bridge I hoped to cross. I had been naive … I was inadequate.” In another scene, she notes how even before October 7, when groups of Palestinians and Israelis joined together to share their stories, their goodwill failed “to straddle the chasm that divided us.”

After the publication of Chen’s essay, one writer after another pulled their work from the magazine. One wrote, “I will not allow my work to be curated alongside settler angst,” while another, the Texas-based Palestinian American poet Fady Joudah, wrote that Chen’s essay “is humiliating to Palestinians in any time let alone during a genocide. An essay as if a dispatch from a colonial century ago. Oh how good you are to the natives.” I find it hard to read the essay that way, but it would be a mistake, as Chen herself suggests, to ignore such sentiments. For those who more naturally sympathize with the Israeli mother than the Gazan hiding from the bombs, these responses exist across that chasm Chen describes, one that empathy alone is incapable of bridging.

That doesn’t mean empathy isn’t a start, though. Which is why the retraction of the article is more than an act of cowardice and a betrayal of a writer whose work the magazine shepherded to publication. It’s a betrayal of the task of literature, which cannot end wars but can help us see why people wage them, oppose them, or become complicit in them.

Empathy here does not justify or condemn. Empathy is just a tool. The writer needs it to accurately depict their subject; the peacemaker needs it to be able to trace the possibilities for negotiation; even the soldier needs it to understand his adversary. Before we act, we must see war’s human terrain in all its complexity, no matter how disorienting and painful that might be. Which means seeing Israelis as well as Palestinians—and not simply the mother comforting her children as the bombs fall and the essayist reaching out across the divide, but far harsher and more unsettling perspectives. Peace is not made between angels and demons but between human beings, and the real hell of life, as Jean Renoir once noted, is that everybody has their reasons. If your journal can’t publish work that deals with such messy realities, then your editors might as well resign, because you’ve turned your back on literature.

Spring has finally sprung: The vernal equinox, the official start date for the season in the Northern Hemisphere, has arrived. The 2024 spring equinox occurred at exactly 11:06 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, March 19 .

But why does the day mark the start of spring and why only in the Northern Hemisphere?

What is an equinox?

There are only two equinoxes a year: vernal and autumnal . They happen when the sun is directly overhead at noon, creating nearly equal portions of day and night in a 24-hour period. The word equinox itself is derived from the Latin words aequus and nox, or equal night.

It usually falls on March 19, 20, or 21. A spring equinox on March 21 is rare, according to the Farmer's Almanac . There hasn't been one in the mainland U.S. for the entirety of the 21st century and there won't be one until 2101.

The date varies , in part, because Earth travels around the sun in 365.24 days, while a calendar year is 365 days, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information.

What's the difference between the spring equinox and meteorological spring?

While the 2024 vernal equinox falls on March 19, meteorological spring began at the start of the month. According to NASA, there are two types of seasons : meteorological and astronomical.

Meteorological seasons are tied to the calendar and are based on the annual temperature cycle. Meteorological seasons are broken up into groupings of three months. Each year, meteorological spring lasts from March 1 until May 31.

Astronomical seasons are based on the tilt of Earth's axis and Earth's position during its orbit around the sun.

When does spring start in the Southern Hemisphere?

In the Southern Hemisphere, spring starts in September, when fall begins in the Northern Hemisphere.

The March equinox will bring later sunrises, earlier sunsets, chillier winds and dry, falling leaves in the Southern Hemisphere. The reverse is true in the Northern Hempisphere, where Tuesday's equinox will bring earlier sunrises, later sunsets, softer winds, and budding plants.

Rituals, traditions and myths

While Easter isn't until the end of March, there's an egg tradition tied to the equinox . According to a weather.gov post, Chinese tradition includes the belief that an egg can be made to stand on end at the exact moment when winter ends and spring stars. However, it's technically possible to stand an egg on end on any day of the year, as long as you have a large amount of patience.

Nowruz , the Iranian or Persian New Year, is tied to the spring equinox. It's been celebrated for more than 3,000 years in the Balkans, the Black Sea Basin, the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Middle East and other regions, according to the United Nations.

When is the next solstice and equinox?

Those impatient for the start of summer need to wait for the summer solstice on Thursday, June 20. The autumnal equinox, signaling the start of fall, will be on Sunday, Sept. 22. The winter solstice this year falls on Saturday, Dec. 21.
