Family members who work together can help balance each others' strengths and weaknesses and bring everyone closer together, reports the University of Illinois Extension. Parents who work as a team have a positive impact on their children's emotions and relationships. Kids who work as a team can increase their sibling bond, tend to watch out for each other and want to help and take care of one another.

Working together makes each member of your family feel good, notes the Students Against Destructive Decisions. Teamwork increases good feelings for both the helper and the person being helped. Knowing that you have your family to back you up in times of trouble can make bad times less stressful and give you the support you need to get through them. Family teamwork also builds trust, opens lines of communication and helps each person be accountable to other members of the family.

Family Roles

Because each person in a family has different talents, defining your roles can make working as a team easier. The University of Illinois Extension suggests getting together as a family and having each person write or draw the strengths of the other family members. For example, mom might be good at doing laundry and easing the fear of bad dreams in the middle of the night, while an older child might be valuable for assisting younger kids with homework and washing dishes. Chances are you'll see some trends among the answers, which can get you started on assigning certain tasks to certain family members so that teamwork comes together seamlessly.

Teamwork Activities

If teamwork is something that your family is working on, activities that foster this skill can help. Activities that scout troops and similar organizations use can help your family gain a sense of teamwork in a fun way. For example, stand in a large, safe area and blindfold each member of the family. Without being able to see anything, put yourselves in order of height or birthday. Or without blindfolds, stand in a circle and have each person put his or her hands in the middle and grasp the hands of two different people. Working together, untangle the knot without letting go of each others' hands.

Making It Work

Teamwork isn't something that happens overnight, and it requires effort from each family member. Keep the lines of communication open. This means that family members listen to each other and work to help one another if they're having trouble completing their tasks. Hold a weekly family meeting that allows each person to talk about what's working and what isn't so you can all make changes accordingly. As teamwork becomes more of a habit for each of you, you might not need to have family meetings as often and may need to gather everyone together only if a problem arises or roles need to be rearranged.

Family Teamwork: How to Accomplish More, Faster, Working Together

Does your family work together as a team?  We raised five kids and found that family teamwork helped us accomplish things faster. It also helped build our kids’ work-ethic and confidence.

Teaching kids the value of Family Teamwork has far-reaching effects. It translates into club activities, sports, jobs, church and eventually into their own families.

In this article, we’ll share some tools and strategies that we used for more than 25 years as we raised and released our kids.

By the way, we didn’t do it perfectly. We had some stumbles, we had some failures, but overall, our kids learned that when we work together we can have fun, reach goals and revel in the joy of a job well done.

Great Examples of Teamwork

The pyramids at Giza, the Cathedral at Notre Dame, the Sears Tower and your home or apartment all have something in common.

You’re kidding, right?

Nope, they are all the result of the coordinated labor of dozens, perhaps even thousands of people working together. They are, in the final analysis, the result of teamwork .

No, this isn’t going to be a locker-room, fist-pumping, adrenalin charging, go out there and get ‘em article.

It is going to be a reminder of the power of teamwork in the home — something many of us may have forgotten as we’ve thrown our hands up in despair over the never-ending list of things to do.

What Does T.E.A.M.  Mean?

Steve’s collegiate gymnastics coach, Don Robinson, was an awesome coach and a great motivator.

In a sport of individual accomplishments like gymnastics, it’s possible to forget the value of teamwork. But no gymnastics team ever won a competition based on the score of just one person – it took an entire team. Coach Robinson often shared his interpretation of the acronym T.E.A.M. as:

Team= T ogether  E veryone  A ccomplishes  M ore

Can this same ideal be applied in our homes? The answer is a resounding YES! With family teamwork, you will accomplish much more.

We’ve seen too many homes where one person (usually the mom) is “bustin’ her chops” to keep the place functioning. This is done while all the other family members are off doing their own thing – having a good time.

It just shouldn’t be that way.

Horsepower and Family Teamwork

The teamwork of horsepower. Two white horses pulling a sled in the snow.

Author Jim Stovall wrote a short essay on the power of draft horses when they are harnessed in teams. Would they be able to pull twice as much? Keep reading.

“Recently, I was reading about draft horses. These are very large, muscular animals. Throughout history, they have been used for pulling great loads and moving very heavy objects. A single draft horse can pull a load up to 8,000 pounds.  The strength involved in this is hard to imagine.  So then we can speculate what would happen if we hooked up two draft horses to a load.  If you instantly thought two draft horses could pull 16,000 pounds, since one draft horse can pull 8,000 pounds, you would be wrong.  Two draft horses pulling together cannot pull twice as much as one.  They can actually pull three times as much.  The two draft horses that can each pull 8,000 pounds alone can pull 24,000 pounds working together.” from TimMaurer.com – blog on Horse Sense.

Why Family Teamwork is Needed in Your Home

Consider a haggard mom with three kids under the age of 7. This mom really needs a team .

If she’s married or has a partner, she needs her soulmate to pitch in and help.

Together, Mom & Dad also need to train their kids to do age-appropriate chores. Kids can do things like helping to put clean dishes away, picking up toys, helping to sort laundry and even doing a little dusting.

In the beginning, it may take longer to teach, correct, and follow up on the work their little hands do. But in time — and it won’t take long — they’ll become competent at these small tasks and be able to move on to bigger things.

Starting their training young will make the team super strong when they are older.

What about a family with a house full of busy teens. Even in this case, it’s not too late to enfold and teach them.

Teens really need to be part of a team . With a seasoned coach calling the shots, a strong vision for what is possible, and a solid plan to accomplish their goals, these teens can help keep that household humming and be better prepared than their peers to launch out on their own.

Teamwork on small things

The idea for this article came one morning a few weeks ago as we were making our bed together . That’s right teamwork making a bed.

It took only a few seconds and there was no time spent walking from one side to the other (or jumping onto and over the bed) to make the covers even.

It got us to thinking about all the things we do together as a couple and with the kids. Like those tasks that are finished so much faster and are physically and mentally easier, because we do them as a team.

None of us is as smart as all of us together! Ken Blanchard

Check out these examples where Family Teamwork can help to lighten the load:

Teamwork with Pots and Pans

A pile of dirty dishes can look pretty intimidating if you have to conquer it alone.

Steve washed pots and pans one summer in exchange for free tuition at a high-priced gymnastics camp.

There was no one to help him wash the pots and pans and it took about one hour after each meal to clean them. The hardest meal was breakfast, trying to clean out a huge pot with burned oatmeal on the bottom.

When Steve was younger his parents instituted “Kitchen Duty.” Basically, one of the four boys was assigned to clean up the entire kitchen alone for one week per month. It was a dreaded and overwhelming task. We determined that we wouldn’t do that to our kids.

How We Made it Easier

When we wash dishes as a family; one person washes, one person rinses and everyone else helps with drying and putting things away. It’s family teamwork at its best.

This is especially effective on our once-a-month cooking day. A mountainous pile of more than 15 or 20 pots, pans, baking dishes, and utensils evaporates in about half an hour. Everything is washed, dried and put away, it is an awesome thing to behold.

Family Teamwork with the Dishwasher

Unloading the dishwasher can also be a team activity.

We divide the dishwasher into three zones for three different people to tackle:

  • Bottom rack

We rotate the responsibilities weekly. This is done because the top rack is the hardest job with lots of smaller items to dry and put away. We don’t want anyone getting stuck doing the toughest job continually.

We did allow the youngest child to put silverware away. They would stand on a chair and learned to put each piece in it’s assigned place.

Family Teamwork with Yardwork

Who wants to spend all day pulling weeds or raking leaves?

None of us want to be the lone person doing a huge job.

But if a team of family members attacks a project like that it will be done in no time.

We don’t usually have a lot of time in the evenings for yard work, but once each week we carve out 30 minutes to an hour and hit the orchard or garden together.

We can accomplish so much in that short amount of time because we’re together — talking, laughing, arguing,s and complaining (are we done yet?). Sometimes we even have some music or an audiobook playing as we work.

But the result is a great-looking yard and a sense of accomplishment for all involved.

Teamwork In the Family Dining Room

Setting and clearing the dinner table is another place where we utilize teamwork to accomplish more.

We divide table setting into three jobs :

  • Dinner Plates
  • Cloth Napkins and Silverware.

Each job takes less than a minute for the person doing it. Everyone participates and then we all sit down to enjoy the meal.

After the meal, the table is cleared and we work together to wash dishes, as we described earlier.

Teamwork on Big Things

Our teamwork benefits not only our family but lots of other people.

Moving

A moving box with rolls of packing tape and markers on it.

A few years back some friends of ours were moving and as a family, we volunteered to help.

We weren’t the first to arrive.

We showed up around 10 AM after the first shift of helpers had left and the moving family was just starting to feel worn down.

The effect of a family of seven people showing up energized the place.

It was like ants attacking a checkered picnic blanket full of food.

The guys were loading heavy items and the gals were packing boxes and vacuuming. We were done in record time and the smiles on the weary movers were incomparable.

TIMBER! Chopping Down a Tree

Tree trimming using a chain saw, hand saws and rakes.

We have many trees on our property. Over the years we have selectively removed a few.

Cutting down a tree alone is a daunting task. Steve has made it a fun task for the kids to help with.

They calculate where the tree will fall, guiding it with long chains or ropes.

As he’s cutting with the chainsaw, the kids take turns pushing against the trunk to see if the tree is ready to fall.

They work slowly and carefully while making it fun. When the first cracking sounds are heard the kids get really excited — everyone yells ‘TIMBER!’

Once the tree is down, the branches are lopped off, by either the chainsaw or one of the older kids using loppers or a smaller hand saw.

Younger kids carry twigs and other scraps to the trash pile. Larger logs and smaller branches are stacked on the woodpile to season for winter. A day-long task for a single woodsman is done in a couple of hours by this awesome family team.

Family Teamwork for Parties

A large cargo parachute hung over a banquet hall.

We’ve hosted some huge parties for graduations, Eagle Scout ceremonies, Congressional award receptions and weddings for our kids.

Preparing and serving all of the food ourselves is definitely a team sport. We make lists and initially allow the kids to choose tasks that they would like to do. As “crunch” time nears, tasks are assigned.

With larger events we always expand our team, asking dear friends and extended family to help — we return the favor for their events.

Clean-up is quick as we always involve the guests who hang around the longest to pitch in. We couldn’t possibly accomplish these events without a strong team of helpers.

What Kids Learn from Teamwork in a Family

Because we stress the power of teamwork in our house, our kids have become very aware of the benefits.

Each of our sons has reached the rank of Eagle Scout . One of their final tasks is to complete an Eagle Scout service project.

Because Boy Scouts is an organization where leadership is taught, the Eagle Scout is less responsible for performing the work than he is coordinating and leading the entire project.

They write up a description of the project, gather donations of materials, and rally volunteer labor.

Joe (age 16) completed his project in October 2007. He coordinated the efforts of more than 75 people and accumulated over 400 man-hours of volunteer labor.

It was awesome to watch. The most difficult task was moving a 40-foot long steel storage container, without a truck. A group of 10 people and a Bobcat lifted, rolled,  pushed and eventually moved the container about 60 feet to its final resting place.

Joe has definitely learned that  “Together Everyone Accomplishes More.”

Teamwork and Our Grown Kids

As of this article updating, all of our kids are grown and started life on their own. The cool thing for us to see is how they still utilize many of the team-building skills they learned as kids.

Our eldest son, John, works for a large AV company and is responsible for coordinating a crew of people to run sound and lighting for enormous conventions for GoDaddy, NASAR, VidCon, Google, and others. Teamwork is definitely a necessity in his position.

Our youngest child, Abbey, is responsible for managing a warehouse that supplies the Grand Canyon University Team Shops (Lope Shops). She is responsible for coordinating the efforts of as many as 12 student workers. Her team fulfills all online orders and supplies all of the physical stores with their merchandise.

We are really proud of our kids and what they’ve accomplished.

Teamwork for Singles

What about singles – are you simply out of luck when it comes to teamwork?

If you’re facing a huge task, assemble a team of friends, family, and co-workers.

We can’t count the number of times we’ve been called upon to help a single person move.

Consider creating a co-op of several friends where you rotate from house to house on a monthly basis working together to do large tasks.

We did a similar thing in our young married’s group at church many years ago. It was a great way to spend time together and conquer significant projects.

People who work together will win, whether it be against complex football defenses, or the problems of modern society. Vince Lombardi

Teamwork and Our Nation

Washington crossing the Deleware

We’ve grown into a nation of individuals. Individuals who are often focused on their needs and goals.

We’ve seen many times, usually in crises, this changes for the better. Hurricanes, terrorist attacks and most recently a global pandemic.

When facing adversity we’ve seen the generous spirit of communities pull together.

Our country was built by men and women who considered the greater good more important than their individual good.

They worked, not for personal gain, but for the good of their community.

Giving, helping, working together meant that, acre by acre, the land was cleared and planted and year by year a great nation was built.

We’re facing some pretty difficult times now and the only way we’ll make it is if we work together.

We’ve got to, as Benjamin Franklin said, “all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately.”

Family Teamwork Wrap-Up

There are so many more ways that you can build your family into a powerful team. Building things, volunteering, picking up trash, collecting recyclables, starting a business. The opportunities for working together are endless.

If we as a family can harness our efforts and all pull the same direction we’ll be able to accomplish three or four times as much as we can alone .

Isn’t this what teamwork is all about?

So start small and build your team. Over time you’ll accomplish larger and greater tasks and your team will soon discover that nothing, absolutely nothing, is impossible if you work together.

Building a Strong Family Team: 3 Fundamental Techniques

by Rick Stephens

family team blog

Have you ever been a part of a super high-performing team? It can be such a deeply satisfying experience when you get to work with people whose personalities, dedication to a common goal, and individual talents mesh in a way that seems like they were made for each other.

If you’ve experienced that kind of inspirational team spirit at work or with an actual sports team, you know it doesn’t happen by accident. Many of us have the exact opposite association with teamwork. It all starts with those ill-fated group projects in school where one person (probably you) did all the work, the rest of the group shared equal credit and it never really changed for any group project thereon.

High-performing teams, rather than talented individuals carrying the load for everyone else’s benefit, are created and nurtured by capable leaders. Those leaders know how to create an environment where each individual team member has the opportunity to thrive.

As a parent, you have probably noticed that your family is a team. You’re working on a group project that will last at least 18 years. Isn’t it worth your time to learn how to be a capable leader of your family team and share the load?

Without a doubt, the answer is yes!

When we as family leaders understand how to create the optimum environment for our family team, all of us benefit in incalculable ways mentally, physically, and emotionally. The good news is, it’s never too early to start implementing the family team concept and it’s never too late to turn things around if you’re headed in the wrong direction.

How do you make a family team?

Do you have a family? Surprise, you already have a family team! Maybe you don’t act like it yet. However, it is completely possible for all of you to work together as an organized unit. No promises that it’s easy though, let’s just be honest.

Many parents, especially moms, don’t feel like they’re part of a team. More often they feel like martyrs, destined to sacrifice everything that makes them feel good and strong and valuable as an individual for the sake of their occasionally grateful family.

It doesn’t have to be that way, though. Your children are absolutely capable of contributing to the family team in meaningful ways, even the toddlers! You need the tools that all capable leaders have in order to help them learn how to contribute and feel good about doing it.

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking, “It takes too long to explain how things need to be done. It’s easier if I just do it.”

It may be easier now, but in the long run, you’re missing a huge opportunity to help your kids learn new skills, be responsible, and be accountable when things don’t work out as they had hoped and expected.

You, your kids, and your partner are a team.  Let’s dive into how to bring them together as a family team and give you and your partner the leadership tools to keep things running smoothly.

Teaching Kids about Money: Be a Coach and Mentor

1. reflect on your family team environment.

Great teamwork is the result of great leadership. So as the family leader, there are some key factors you must consider when thinking about the relationships and emotional environment in your home.

01 | Is there agreement on the value of becoming a team?

No matter how much you believe in it, just wanting your family to behave more like a team will not make them do it. They have to see the benefits and want to change just as much as you do.

02 | Is there a shared vision of success?

What does “team” mean in your family? What exactly needs to change in order for your family team to thrive? Do you have a plan for how your team will adapt over time as children mature and take on more responsibilities? Are your children part of making that plan? A shared vision of success is something everyone needs to contribute to.

03 | Is there an environment of mutual trust and respect?

Trust and respect are fundamental parts of any long-term relationship. When we’re talking about your family team, every team member needs to make choices in good faith that their efforts will be rewarded, not in the sense of candy, stickers, or money.

Rewards come in the form of more independence, flexibility in schedules and rules, more choices offered, and whatever else you establish as appropriate in your family.

04 | Are there clear and reasonable expectations of each family member?

Expectations in general are not a bad thing. Every high-performing team expects that the other team members will carry their fair share of the load. That’s assuming though, they all understand what the load is and what part of it is theirs to carry.

Your success as a family team must include regular communication about what is needed from every member and what they are willing and able to give.

05 | Is open communication encouraged?

In a family, when communication is “open,” it allows for opinions, needs, mistakes, and successes all to be shared without fear of judgment, punishment, or any other negative response.

There are a number of skills involved, including active listening, repeating back what you’ve heard, using noninflammatory language, and such. But the most important piece is simply listening with the intent to connect and support, not respond. Regular family meetings are a great way to keep communication flowing.

06 | Do you possess strong conflict resolution skills?

There is no such thing as a family without conflict. Having the skills to resolve conflict peaceably and respectfully go a long way in maintaining overall satisfaction and joy.

07 | Are you able to appreciate each other’s differences?

Not every member of a sports team plays every position well. Likewise, not every member of your family team needs to be good at or responsible for all the same things.

Working together, maximizing our individual strengths with a common goal, results in the best outcome for the team overall.

08 | Are there many opportunities to learn together?

Besides the sheer value of learning something new, by participating in a wide variety of activities with our children, including things we’re not good at, we show them our weaknesses, so they might gain perspective about how we continue to learn new things over a lifetime.

In doing things we are good at already, we show them our strengths and talents, so they may be inspired to continue practicing and see us as more than just their parents. We are fallible and we are awesome. When our children see that and we remind ourselves, we are all more likely to feel that camaraderie we so desire.

Creating Your Ultimate Family Team Workbook

2. How to Manage the Storming That Occurs in All Family Teams as Your Kids Get Older

It’s all well and good to look at a list of concepts and say, “Yeah, my family can do that.” Then you actually try to put it into practice and the whole thing blows up in your face.

What you may not know is that all teams, whether work or family-related, go through stages:

The concept was first coined in 1965 by psychologist Bruce Tuckman in his paper “Developmental Sequence in Small Groups.” The stages of forming, storming, norming, and performing represent a cycle of how groups of people, including families, come together, struggle for a bit, adjust to each other’s needs and styles, and ultimately succeed.

Your family team started when you became a couple.

Family Team - Forming

Forming Your Family Team:

Remember when you and your partner came together? It was pure bliss, at least we hope it was. You each came from a family team, call them Family Team A and Family Team B.

With your partner, you formed Family Team C with hopes, a shared view of the future, mutual trust for one another, and appreciation of your differences while looking forward to learning from each other. It was heaven
right? The wonders of the forming stage.

Family Team - Storming

Your Team Starts Storming:

Then a few differences started to show up with simple things like where to put things, doing the dishes, appropriate levels of road rage, where to go on vacation, which couples to hang out with, how much money to spend or save, maybe politics or religion, and probably more.

Welcome to the storming stage. Frustration, differences in perspective, and sometimes wondering, did I make the right decision?

Family Team - Norming

The Peace of Norming:

Then your heart and communication skills kicked in, and you began to sort through your real sense of the future as a couple, aligning around values, setting expectations, talking less and listening more to really understand, and sharing your innermost feelings. Ah, you were getting back to heaven on earth again
 you were norming!

Family Team - Performing

Finally, Your Family Team Starts Performing:

And then as a couple and as a team, while you still had differences, your focus was on the things that really made a difference and your common understandings.

You were in the performing stage. You had become a strong couple. You truly became Family Team C. And through the process, you changed and your partner changed.

Then you had a child and had to start the whole FSNP process over again!

Your child, we’ll call him Mr. Soggy Bottom, demanded food, attention, and a not soggy bottom. At that point, what was a blissful life as a couple changed. No more sleepy Sunday mornings; those quiet, intimate moments became few and far between.

The arrival of Mr. Soggy Bottom meant your new team had clearly formed, but along with him were new opportunities for storming. Eventually the new normal began to set in as you worked through each storming issue. You got into a new rhythm and reentered the performing stage. Maybe you’re still working on that, and that’s perfectly okay!

The thing about children is that because they are constantly changing, maturing, exploring, and growing into themselves, it can feel like your family team never stays in that performing stage for very long, if you reach it at all.

But that doesn’t have to be the case for you.

Prepared with the knowledge that building and sustaining your high-functioning team requires going through many cycles of FSNP is totally normal, you can approach those storming sessions with more clarity, patience, and a focus on the future (instead of frustration, anger, and irritation).

The storming phase is normal.

Respectful conflict resolution is a tough subject to deal with, especially when you’re in the fray, your emotions are running high, and one of the two people in the discussion has their mouth engaged and ears turned off.

When in the middle of a storm, whether the lightning is flashing and the thunder is booming, the tornado just touched down, the storm surge is rising, or tempers are flaring and voices are getting louder, it’s incredibly difficult to keep your cool.

It’s only natural, when the adrenaline starts pumping and our heart starts racing, we tend to lose control.

Storming is a normal part of the FSNP cycle. It’s a frustrating but important part of growth and development for any group of people, especially families.

Whether with your partner or your children, at some point (many points?), you are going to get into arguments where tempers will flare, and you as a mature adult are going to need to dig deep into your leadership tool kit to find a path forward.

Think about the last time you had an argument with your partner. While in the heat of the “discussion,” did either of you change the other’s mind? Probably not. Did you or your partner say things you later regretted? Probably.

How about arguing with your child? Have you ever pulled the “I’m the parent, so you’ll do what I say” card? It may have shut down the argument at the time, but I’m willing to bet it did very little to actually resolve the issue. If anything, you both likely felt more distant and frustrated afterward.

To get through the storm, you first have to get past the emotions of the moment.

There are two simple approaches, but both require some patience.

Living Space and Family Values

01 | Mute your mouth and engage your ears.

Really listen to what is being said. You can also take a few deep breaths to get the adrenaline levels back to normal. The key is to stop and listen. When you want to open your mouth, only ask questions aimed at better understanding
NOT about stating your position on the topic.

Think of using the word “why”:

  • Why do you believe that?
  • Why is that important to you?
  • Why would that make a difference?

Remember when your kids were younger and they went through a phase of asking why about everything? They wanted to learn. Now it’s your turn to ask because you really want to know why.

Living Space and Family Values

02 | Take a walk to get things settled down.

If it’s too hard to mute your mouth and engage your ears, this is your best approach. Kids, particularly preteens and teens, don’t have brains developed enough to disengage. You do. So, take a walk.

While on the walk, focus on a simple question, “Why?” Why are they saying what they are saying or why do they want to do this or why do they believe what they do? When you get back home you’ll likely be relaxed, ready to listen, and ready to ask, “Why?”

Once you understand the why, then you’re ready for the discussion that gets you past the storming and you can focus on how to go forward.

You want your family to be a team, focused on taking care of each other, watching out for each other, doing things together, and making a difference wherever you are.

Muting your mouth, engaging your ears, sometimes taking a walk, and always remembering to ask why can truly make your family a loving and caring team.

3. Create an environment where your kids know they are heard and seek your advice.

An important fact to remember, particularly when tensions peak and frustrations flare, is that your kids will listen to you because you listen to them. You’re probably thinking, well of course I listen to my kids! And while we all want to believe that, the truth is, we think we listen better than we actually do.

Can you remember the last time you yelled at your child? I’m sure you can. Can you remember when your kids did something dumb? Most likely, but only if you knew about it.

Can you remember the last time your kids shared one of their most private secrets with you or something they were really embarrassed about or a wrong decision they made? Perhaps not.

As our kids get older, face pressures at school, get bullied, or see some of their friends abuse drugs or alcohol, the foundation we built and continue to build on provides the basis for them to know we will listen to them without judgement and that our advice is helpful.

The same skills you can use during conflict resolution are skills you can use all the time—active listening (mouth closed, brain engaged, and paying attention to them) and really working hard to understand and not judge, asking “why” questions, and trying to see the issues through their eyes.

All of these demonstrate that you are listening to them. As a result, the insights and personal experiences you share with them will play a big part in the solutions they come up with for handling their situations.

Moving Your Family Team Forward

Just like any professional team, your family team will go through periods of forming, storming, norming, and performing. Working through each phase as they come is the life-changing work of seeing your partner and children as an empowered and high-performing family team.

That team can fight against itself with each member constantly looking for ways to assert their independence and value. Or that team can thrive with each member knowing they are wanted, needed, and valued.

You are the leader of your family team! When you utilize the three fundamental techniques to building a strong family team, by nurturing the right mental and emotional environment, actively practicing how to turn storms into wins, and creating an environment where your kids want to listen to you because you listen to them, you will be a confident and capable parent and your kids will become capable and caring adults.

Our guide 8 Secrets to Creating Your Ultimate Family Team will walk you through the eight elements of your soon-to-be thriving team with detailed explanations of why each element matters, how to make it happen, and conversation prompts for your partner and your children, plus carefully crafted reflection questions to get everyone thinking about the costs of staying the same and the incredible benefits of moving forward.

Why Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

Characteristics of good teamwork, how to foster good teamwork, how to be a good team player.

You’ve probably seen the phrase “Teamwork makes the dream work” printed on office mugs and motivational posters. But what exactly does it mean and what does good teamwork look like?

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

The phrase “Teamwork makes the dream work” essentially means that dividing tasks and responsibilities among a team can lead to better outcomes than a single person doing the same task, says Sabrina Romanoff , PsyD, a clinical psychologist and professor at Yeshiva University.

The saying was initially coined by American clergyman John C. Maxwell. Maxwell published an eponymous book in 2002, in which he wrote, “Teamwork makes the dream work, but a vision becomes a nightmare when the leader has a big dream and a bad team.” In his book, Maxwell discusses the importance of working together collaboratively and shares some principles for building a strong team.

The phrase caught on and has become popular over the years. In this article, we explore the benefits of teamwork, the characteristics of good teamwork, as well as some steps to help you be a good team player and build a strong team.

Below, Dr. Romanoff explains why teamwork is important and the benefits it can offer:

  • Improves efficiency and output: Teamwork is important because much more can be accomplished as part of a team than a single person working alone. Successful teams are much more efficient and effective at completing tasks than individuals.
  • Produces better solutions: Teamwork allows the opportunity for diverse perspectives to tackle problems and find solutions that are more resourceful and effective than one person’s input alone. When multiple people are contributing, more knowledge, viewpoints, and feedback are incorporated, helping teammates arrive at more holistic solutions.
  • Offers a larger pool of resources: Each member of the team can contribute their efforts, knowledge, abilities, and strengths to the task at hand. The team can tap into the resources each member provides to tackle new challenges.
  • Promotes growth and learning: When people work together, there is an opportunity for each member of the team to learn and grow, both personally and professionally.
  • Creates strong bonds among teammates: Collaborating on shared tasks, helping others, and working together helps teammates foster strong connections. People bond when they work together toward a common goal in an encouraging and supportive environment.
  • Fosters a feeling of belonging: Teamwork also taps into our human need for belonging to a community or group and feeling like we are working towards something that is bigger than ourselves.
  • Reduces stress: People tend to feel more supported when they’re part of a team. They often experience less perceived stress because they’re not facing the problem alone.

According to Dr. Romanoff, these are some of the characteristics of good teamwork:

  • Shared goal: A successful team articulates and agrees on a common goal that has meaning to its members. Shared understanding of the goal the team is working toward is crucial so that everyone is on the same page and the team can operate as a cohesive unit.
  • Cooperation: It’s important for teammates to actively listen to one another, cooperate with each other, and help one other out when required. A collaborative approach leads to more efficient and effective output.
  • Respect: When people feel respected by their teammates, they are able to freely share ideas and opinions without fear of rejection or judgment. This level of safety sets the stage for greater commitment among teammates, originality, and novelty.
  • Trust: There is trust that each member will deliver on their role for the team and meet their commitments. Team members take their responsibilities seriously and commit to following through on behalf of the individual members but also for the collective group. Each member is also trusted with placing the team’s interests above their own.
  • Coordination: The team is well-organized so everyone is systematically and efficiently working together toward deadlines and shared goals. Effective communication and coordination are the bedrock of good teamwork.
  • Strong interpersonal relationships: There are strong relationships among teammates. Team members care about each other and relationships are deeper than just their roles in the team. For instance, there is knowledge and sharing about people’s personal lives, and interest in other’s talents, skills, and interests. Team members take the time to celebrate achievements or have social outings outside of work to get to know each other as people.
  • Effective conflict-resolution: Members of the team understand that conflict is inevitable but they are able to successfully manage and resolve them, by prioritizing the team’s goal over individual differences and conflicts. This means addressing issues among team members as they come up instead of pushing them under the rug, while also keeping differences among members in perspective so they don’t override the group’s mission.

Dr. Romanoff shares some strategies that can help you foster good teamwork:

  • Define the goal: Define the mission and goal of the team. These can be co-constructed with your teammates, as team members are likely to have more buy-in when they have a role in choosing goals that are personally meaningful to them.
  • Regularly ask for and provide feedback: Checking in with team members is the best way to implement needed change. This doesn’t have to be a formal process. Instead, openly discussing how team members are feeling can be normalized as part of the team’s culture.
  • Maintain transparency: Be transparent, not just about the goal of the team but the goal of smaller tasks and mandates. This helps people understand how each job and agenda item is contributing to the overall mission of the organization.
  • Making learning a continuous priority: Offer trainings, reading material, and resources to team members. Bring in people to teach on new topics and host events where members can share new information and passions with their teammates.
  • Recognize accomplishments: Give team members kudos for a job well done and have their good work acknowledged by their peers and managers.
  • Foster a culture of gratitude: It can be helpful to foster a culture of gratitude by having members consider what they are grateful for within the team or in their day, to help them reflect on what they appreciate in another.

If you’re wondering how to be a good team player, Dr. Romanoff has some suggestions that can help:

  • Commit to the goal: Commit to the group process and the team’s goal.
  • Take ownership: Take your tasks and responsibilities seriously. Be accountable to yourself and your teammates. Be cognizant of how your actions impact the team.
  • Be flexible: Be flexible , open to change, and willing to take on new challenges or responsibilities to help your team.
  • Work with your peers, not against them: Don’t compete with your peers. Instead try to work together toward a common goal and help each other out.
  • Maintain a positive mindset: Be positive and optimistic. This mindset is contagious and will draw other team members towards you.
  • Stay true to your values: Have integrity and speak your mind to advocate for the greater good and values of the group, even if it means going against what other group members are saying.

If you’ve ever been part of a team that just clicked, you know that being part of a team can be engaging and gratifying. Whether it’s at home, at work, on a playground, or in a relationship, working together as part of a team offers several benefits.

5 Tips to keep your family working together as a team

How operating as a family team can improve your home life.

Early on in our marriage, my husband and I developed  an attitude of teamwork . It was us against the world, so to speak. Once we had children, we wanted to create an atmosphere of family teamwork. Having our family working together remains one of our top priorities. We haven’t always been perfect at it, but building the mentality of a family team improves our home life and help us build strong relationships. We use some simple strategies to make that happen.

Why family teamwork matters

One of the biggest aspects of family teamwork is thinking about other people. In this case, it’s thinking about your family members and what they need. As the old saying goes, “There’s no ‘I’ in teamwork.” And I can’t think of a better way to build good relationships within your family than thinking about what each other needs. I’ve seen my children care for and look out for each other (and their dad and me) at different times that I know is a result of our family routine of teamwork.

Another benefit of family teamwork is that you can more easily celebrate victories together. It helps eliminate competition among siblings. We have often told our children that what’s good news for one of us is good for all of us. We’re not competing to see who is the best or who can get the most. We are celebrating the victories along the way and understanding that those victories look different for each of us. Our family has a common goal to succeed and support one another. Basically, family teamwork encompasses the attitudes I want most for my family. I want us to be  a safe spot  for each other. I want our family to look out for and support one another while maintaining a good relationship. And I want to make sure each of us know we are part of something bigger. We are all an integral part to our family and the team doesn’t run as well if a member is down.

What family teamwork looks like

Family working together Pinterest image 2

Throughout the years, we’ve seen the family teamwork mentality at work in our family in a variety of ways.

  • When our children get a sweet treat without the other one around, they ask for a treat to share with the other so nobody is left out.
  • Our kids have worked together to organize their bedrooms and shared spaces. (I mean, two weeks ago, I found them voluntarily working together to sort through and organize their bookcases together!)
  • The entire family worked together this summer to redo both of the kids’ bedrooms. We all painted part of my daughter’s bed together, and we all spent an entire weekend sorting through and organizing toys in my son’s room.
  • When my daughter is up before me, she makes breakfast for her little brother (and sometimes for me!).
  • Our children have teamed up together to plan fun activities like a  family yes day .
  • We have family laundry folding “parties” and work together to get laundry folded and put away.

Ideas for building family teamwork

You don’t just wake up one day and declare that everyone is a team and that’s the end of it. We’ve been working on it for about a decade now, and we are still finding ways to make improvements. Nobody is perfect by any means. But, there are some things you can do to help encourage teamwork within your family.

1. Work on projects together.

Not much builds teamwork better than working on a project together. Getting the entire family involved in projects around the house helps everyone learn how to work together and builds the family teamwork mentality. Our kids haven’t always been excited about projects we have had them work on with us. We have definitely had discussions about attitude adjustments. We remind the kiddos that we are working together for something to help or benefit our entire family. And we do our best to make sure we also have good attitudes while being clear that bad attitudes won’t be tolerated.

What has ended up happening is that even when the kids grouse about working on a project they don’t want to, they get on board with it. In the end, when we finish the project together, they feel just as good about it as we do.

Another bonus of working on projects together is teaching the kiddos life skills. The kids have helped my husband change the brakes on the car, helped me prepare food, helped clean rooms, helped organize closets and more. Some skills are bigger than others. I wouldn’t trust my 8- and 11-year-old children to change the brakes on the car by themselves, but I love that they have an understanding of how car brakes work and the benefits of being able to do that work ourselves.

Other things, like helping me prepare food, have already paid off as my oldest has really taken a shine to cooking and made dinner for our family as well as multiple other dishes completely on her own. She’s learned the satisfaction of making food for people she loves.

2. Talk about being a team.

While actions speak louder than words in general, words are still important to reinforce the family teamwork mentality. One of our family rules is that we don’t make fun or talk negatively about each other. The best way we’ve found to communicate about teamwork is in small ways in the moment rather than sitting down for a long lecture. Because, let’s face it, long lectures aren’t a great way to get through to kids (or adults!).

Instead, we compliment the kids when we see them working together to help each other or one of us. We will literally say things like, “I love how you guys worked together on that.” When one of our kiddos struggles with feeling jealous of something the other one is doing (one child struggles with this more than the other), we instead help them focus on being happy for their sibling. Because, as we remind them, what’s good for one of us is good for all of us. We can celebrate something good happening to someone in our family knowing there will be times the family will be celebrating with us.

It might sound a bit cheesy, but we also will sometimes give high fives and say, “Go, Team Shannon!” None of us are super into sports, but we are super into being together and working well together. Even cheesy statements help us remember that we really are all a team working together.

3. Keep competition fun.

Competition in families should happen only in games and nothing else. Any other competition is not going to build a family teamwork mentality and will most likely cause it to crumble to the ground. In a good team, everyone is working together for the common good. Nobody is working to look better than their own teammates. Comparing the abilities of our children to each other is not going to help build a team mentality. Instead, it will end up dividing our children rather than bring them together.

And beware of ways your children might perceive that you’re comparing them, even if you aren’t. For example, I grew up as the youngest of two kids. Sometimes I felt like I had to live up to something my older brother did and that my parents were comparing us. Looking back now, they weren’t comparing us. I just felt that way. So I try to be intentional about reminding my kids that they are both doing a great job and they both have different strengths and skills. All we want them to do is  their  best. Will that look different for them? Absolutely, because they are different people!

4. Play cooperative games.

I’m not necessarily thinking of team-building exercises like trust falls, but I’m thinking more of games in general that you can play together as a family without competition. We even play some competitive games, like charades, without keeping score. Listen, I’m a competitive person. I want to win when I play games. But I have found I most love playing  cooperative games  with my family that we work together to win.

One of my recent good memories with my family was playing a game of Monopoly together on the Xbox. My husband ran the controller and our family played collectively as one game piece. We each had input on strategies and what we should do as we competed against computer players. When we pulled out a victory after thinking we were going to get beaten, all four of us celebrated together.

Another great team building game we’ve played recently is  story telling together using the alphabet . One person starts a story by saying a couple of sentences with a word that starts with letter “A.” The next person starts with a “B” and adds a couple of more sentences. The story builds itself through to the end of the alphabet. Nothing is competitive about the game and it just results in lots of laughs as you work together to tell a story. Ours have taken all sorts of twists and turns I didn’t see coming!

5. Be an all-inclusive team coach.

If we go with a sports analogy for family teamwork, the parents are the coaches and the children are the players. That’s how it ought to be. But that doesn’t mean the team members never get a say in what the team is doing. Though my husband and I get the final say on family decisions, we get our children’s opinions in some matters as we are making plans.

For example, this year we were trying to decide what to do for vacation. My husband and I came up with four destinations and presented all four to our children. As a family we discussed what we liked about each option. Then we talked, voted and came up with our final selection together. When the kids were younger, we didn’t do this, because they were too young to have a say or really care. But as they are getting older, they love being able to have a say in decisions.

Any time you can involve your kids in decision making for your family, go for it. While it does help them build important skills about decision making, it also helps them feel more connected and part of the team. My husband and I definitely make many decisions without their input, because we are the adults and have the experience and wisdom to make good choices. But in other areas, we love to let them be involved. In the vacation example, the kids also learned how much work goes into planning a vacation and finding things for us to do that are fun. Since they got to be involved in the planning, they were even more excited for the trip and we were able to better choose the things they wanted to do.

Four Tips for Displaying Teamwork in Your Application Essays

family teamwork essay

Teamwork – and its close cousin leadership – are highly prized by graduate programs and universities. But if you haven’t worked in a team on any regular basis, don’t worry! You’ve probably got a number of examples of teamwork in your back pocket that you didn’t even realize were there. Consider the following four ideas when you are writing an essay about teamwork.

family teamwork essay

1. Teams come in many flavors and sizes.

Unless you’ve been living like a hermit for the past several years, you have undoubtedly participated in various groups . Maybe you were a member of a sports team; a dance, music, or theater troupe; or a youth group through your church, synagogue, or community center. You might have been a member of a committee, either as a volunteer or at work. Perhaps you helped organize an event, tutored, been part of a Scout group, or volunteered to be a Big Brother or Big Sister.

In any of these cases, you likely worked with other people. Even if your interaction was with only one other person, you have material you can discuss in a teamwork personal statement. Yes, working with just one other person, as a mentor or guide, counts!

2. Show that you were an active listener.

Teamwork and collaboration require effective listening. Discuss a time when you stopped to listen – really listen – to others, patiently and skillfully. Unfortunately, and perhaps unfairly, many young people today have gained a reputation for not being willing to listen to others and for quickly becoming agitated by differing views. Demonstrate to the adcom that this isn’t who you are. Show that your ability to listen to others, to take in other points of view, and to express your understanding of those views helped eased tensions and increased collaboration. This can be an impressive example of your teamwork skills.

3. Discuss morale boosting and conflict resolution.

Have you ever been involved in a project when enthusiasm was flagging, but you found a way to inject renewed excitement into it? Have you brainstormed an idea to strengthen a group, club, or assignment? These are also examples of teamwork. Perhaps you found a way to make peace between two warring members of a group who couldn’t agree on the direction your project or plan should go. If you mediated this conflict and got the two individuals to start working together, that was surely teamwork (and worthy of a peace prize!).

Any time you proactively got involved with other people (especially when they were being difficult), discovered a better way to get things done, found a middle ground, or thought of a creative new idea, that was teamwork.

4. Consider experiences in your personal life for material.

A client once wrote about her efforts to heal a serious rift in her family after her father passed away. Siblings were fighting for control of the successful family business, and an ugly succession fight ensued. The client patiently coaxed cooperation, even in this personal and emotionally charged environment. She used both shuttle diplomacy and active listening among battling family members, leading to everyone’s agreement to use a mediator to reach a final resolution.

Another client wrote about having organized a trip with a few friends and how he dealt with a dispute between two of them. Their  bickering had threatened to ruin the long-planned trip. His effective listening and creativity in figuring out an activity that neither of the “combatants” would be able to resist helped defuse the situation and saved the trip from becoming an outright disaster for everyone. In both these situations, the “teams” were small, but the stakes for those involved were high.

We hope you now see that you’ve been working in teams more often than you thought! No doubt you’ll have strong options to choose from when writing a teamwork personal essay.

Teamwork in School and College

You can introduce various points while explaining the importance of teamwork in an essay when it concerns educational institutions.

  • It helps learn essential social skills. Working in a team can teach you necessary social skills, such as listening and speaking. You’ll have to act cohesively to get anything done. Additionally, teamwork experience will make you learn how to communicate information to others effectively.
  • It enhances self-confidence . Teamwork in school and college teaches individuals that their voices are heard and valued. That helps people improve their self-esteem and enhance the working process.
  • It diminishes bullying . Improved self-confidence will help a student to rise above the bully. Moreover, team members are more willing to support each other than other classmates. Discussing it in a student teamwork essay can be quite profound.
  • It establishes the ground for student’s success in the future. Effective teamwork may contribute to breakthroughs outside the classroom. An early introduction to such experiences creates more opportunities for people to be productive and satisfied as a part of the group. When looking between teamwork and individual work experience, hiring companies value the former more.

Teamwork in the Workplace

You may be assigned to write an essay on teamwork in the workplace and its importance. In that case, you should consider the following arguments:

  • Teamwork is crucial for the project’s success. The ability to work within a group increases your chance of getting and keeping the job. Moreover, the capacity to cooperate with colleagues can help you achieve better results. That’s the reason why companies have team-building activities. They can help improve the teamwork in the workplace and thus improve effectiveness.
  • Teamwork is critical for personal growth. Working with different people in one group can enhance the personal strengths of each person. For instance, the team’s cultural diversity can help you learn how to communicate with people from different backgrounds. You can see this argument explored in various teamwork essay examples .

đŸ€” Writing about Teamwork: What Makes a Good Team?

For some reason, you need to compose a paper on creating or managing a team. Describe the whole process in your essay about teamwork. The main question you should answer is, “What makes a good team?”

To do that, discuss the following points in your paper:

  • primary goals and purposes of your team;
  • members of the team and duties of each member;
  • a leader of your team;
  • ways of achieving good relations and agreement between all members of the group.

The overall success of a team depends on each particular member. So, what a team member should be like? It is another good question to answer in essays about teamwork.

You may consider the following characteristics of a team member:

  • an ability to meet the deadlines;
  • an ability to adapt to changes quickly;
  • good communication and diplomatic skills;
  • optimism and a positive attitude, etc.

Teamwork essay introduction

Over the last few decades, effective teamwork has become a key factor in business success. Companies hire diverse employees with unique skills to work together toward a common goal. The synergy created by such teamwork can lead to amazing achievements.

Thesis statement about teamwork

Effective teamwork helps achieve organizational goals by fostering collaboration and enhancing productivity.

Teamwork’s first advantage is improved collaboration among team members. When people with different perspectives work together, they can use their collective knowledge to address challenges, make better decisions, and come up with innovative ideas. For example, research and development teams have scientists and engineers collaborate and develop new technologies. Important inventions and breakthroughs can only be possible with their combined efforts.

Teamwork also enhances productivity by combining the team members’ strengths. Teams can optimize their performance and achieve better results when they assign tasks based on each member’s skills. For instance, in a marketing team, one member may excel in creative design while another is skilled in data analysis. The team can combine their skills to create memorable campaigns that resonate with their audience.

Teamwork is crucial for organizational success because it promotes collaboration and enhances productivity. Only by working together can companies overcome challenges and achieve their strategic goals.

5 Ways to Encourage Teamwork in Your Family

Can you apply the same principles of successful workplace teamwork to your family unit, psychologist george karseras suggest five ways families can work best together.

Happy teams tend to be successful teams and successful teams tend to be happy teams, so the best way to maximise teamwork is to ensure the team is both happy and successful. This is easier said than done, as teams – whether they are families or workplace teams – contain illogical and emotional members called people!

1. Discuss why the team exists

My first tip is for the team to discuss and ultimately agree on why it exists and what it is trying to achieve together.

In a family, Mum or Dad may have an idea of why they work so hard, but do they discuss with the children what their dreams are for the family unit, why they had a family in the first place or what they would like the family to contribute for each others’ wellbeing or to the wider community?

These are quite profound questions for the family to discuss, but the research tells us that having a collective sense of purpose really helps teams work better together. If the children are too young to participate, then this is a great discussion to have with your partner.

2. Encourage everyone to sign up to the 'rules of the road'

I encourage the teams I develop in business and indeed my own family to sign up to the ‘rules of the road’. These target norms are best generated by the team or family rather than being ‘told’ by the team leader or the parent(s).

For example a team might agree to ‘be kind to each other and apologise if we upset someone’ or ‘share the chores of the house or team evenly’. Agreements can be written up and put on the fridge or the office wall as a reminder of what’s expected. Just doing this alone increases the chances of these agreements being upheld.

Setting the team up to succeed isn’t enough though, the best teams have buckets of psychological safety, where the team members feel able to speak up and say how they are feeling without fear of recourse. You can build this safety in two ways:

3. Have regular discussions on ‘how’ team members are feeling

These discussions are a perfect way to discuss whether the ‘rules of the road’ are being upheld. Listen to each person in turn describe how it has felt being part of the family or team and especially how they are feeling at the current time. Do they have any feedback they would like to share?  Encourage both appreciations and frustrations to be aired. Avoid arguing, justifying or explaining, even if you disagree with what is being said. Just let the person be heard. When everyone has spoken then agree as a team or family which areas you’d like to discuss to improve matters. I’d recommend 4 of these types of discussions through the year, once every 3 months. Airing frustrations and appreciations is good for well-being and boosts mental health.

4. Prioritise laughter and fun

Mood is contagious and being up-beat, optimistic, and laughing together is a wonderful way to keep spirits up. To help you do this, fully embrace the concept of team learning. When the team accepts it will make mistakes and embraces them as learning opportunities its members can remain positive even in tough times and be more likely not to make mistakes in the first place.

5. Focus on developing constructive tension

This is where there is some but not too much tension in the family or team. It may sound paradoxical but a bit of tension is no bad thing.

If there is relentless harmony then it is very probable people are not being honest or not extending or developing themselves enough for the benefit of the team or family unit. Too much tension can be catastrophic – aggression or violence in particular.

To be constructive the family or team must firstly accept that tension, arguments, differences of opinions or emotional outbursts are to be expected. Rather than bearing grudges, the family or team needs to become good at apologising, owning up to their mistakes, taking care of the impact of their misdemeanours and most importantly talking about them together calmly and without getting emotionally charged.

Essay on Teamwork

The word ‘teamwork’ means working together as a team to achieve a particular goal. Humans are social animals. We tend to stick together and work alongside others in almost every phase of life. Be it in an office or home, everyone has his responsibilities to meet. Performing these responsibilities every day makes us a part of the team we are in. Upon doing their assigned work with proper coordination, a team always wins in achieving its goal.

Teamwork can be seen in a company, in the agricultural field, or any environment, you can name. Even the animals also perform as a team to survive in this competitive world. Cheetahs hunt together, wild dogs stay together avert danger, bees make their hives being united, and so on. It means that the success of a team depends on the performance of each member. They are called teammates.

In a team, there is a hierarchical system where one leads the others to follow. The leader has more experience than the other teammates. It is his experience that helps him to lead a team with proper supervision. If you look at an organisation, you will find that leaders show the path to the teammates to follow and complete their respective assignments. Every assignment is a small piece to a big puzzle. This puzzle will only take the right shape when all the pieces fall in the right place. Hence, the contribution of each team member is extremely crucial for the success of a team.

As time changed, the hierarchical system transformed. With the increase and diversification of responsibilities, the structure of a team changed drastically. It helps the companies to designate work and distribute the load. This helps in the proper management of workflow. As a person gains experience, he moves up the ladder and holds a more responsible position in the team.

In an organisation, the top-level comprises the managers who have immense experience in a particular field. With their experience and expertise, they control the productivity and outcome of a team. The middle-level managers carry on the orders given by the top level. This personnel has less experience than the top-level but more than the lower level of the team. The lower level comprises the frontline soldiers who execute what they have been ordered.

If you look at a family, there is no such level distribution. This distribution is done in a different way. The parents are those who take care of all the other family members. The rest of the members do their own work as assigned. This is where cooperation comes into the picture. If any of the family members do not cooperate with the rest, the entire system will crumble eventually.

Teamwork is extremely important. Whether it is a small business or a huge organisation, teamwork is important. The prime elements of teamwork are coordination and cooperation. Every element in a team will need to coordinate and cooperate with the rest of the team so that the workflow is maintained aptly. All the members should understand the importance of teamwork and contribute to it as per the directions given. A well-coordinated team is more productive. The outcome is extremely constructive. Companies design a team by filling the positions with the most suitable team players with apt experience in their particular fields.

Working as a team also makes new relationships. People come close to others and bond. They learn the strengths and weaknesses of others. In fact, we all start to bridge the gap and find our complementary strengths to cover the weaknesses of the others. This is how a team functions. We all should understand the importance of a team and stick to the values to give the best and contribute to a beautiful outcome.

 Short Essay On Teamwork

Teamwork means to work together with several people to achieve a goal that is common to all. We can say that teamwork is crucial for the functioning of an organisation. Without teamwork an organisation or company won’t be able to achieve its goals on time and this can lead to loss of energy and manpower. Every organisation or company has a division of many teams which perform specific tasks and without it the functioning of the organisation or company may get disrupted which will ultimately hinder the achievement of success and the goals set by them. This can affect the organisation or company and even the people working there. Every organisation or firm has a different hierarchy of teamwork too where the workload is evenly divided. This helps in maintaining the work balance and also equality among the members. Every team has a team leader or an expert that guides the whole team with their prior knowledge or experience. Humans are social beings and we are surrounded by one another in every stage of our life whether it is in home, school or office. All of us have certain goals and responsibilities we aim to achieve. All of this makes us part of the team. When we are assigned some work, then with proper coordination and planning we can always achieve the goal easily.

Teamwork can be seen in many environments. For example, it can be seen in the company, agricultural field and many other places. In wildlife, we can see how animals hunt together to capture their prey, this is to achieve their food and their source of survival. This is achieved by teamwork. We can also consider the examples of honeybees that live in a social organisation where each type of honeybee has different work to do and all perform together as a team for sustaining their hive. Thus, we can see examples of teamwork everywhere and we can understand how imperative it is to achieve goals.

FAQs on Teamwork Essay

1. Where can you find examples of Teamwork?

You will find teamwork anywhere in the world. Even in the deepest part of a jungle, you will find ants finding their ways to survive by sticking together as a team. The hyenas also stay together and even muster the courage to steal food from a pride of lions. We have also heard many fables and stories related to teamwork. The pigeons flew away with the trap and let the bird-catcher feel distressed. This would not have happened if the birds did not unite and use their cumulative strength to get rid of the catcher.

2. What makes a Team strong?

The team comprises members with different levels of experience. It is the diversity of experience and strengths each team member has that makes a team stronger. In a team, the different strengths make a cumulative strength and deliver unity. The team members complement each other’s weaknesses and emerge as a formidable unit to overcome all the hurdles on the way. The two most important elements of a team are coordination and cooperation. When all cooperate and coordinate with the rest, the team becomes one single entity.

3. Why Teamwork is important?

Not everyone is adept at handling all kinds of work. Hence, a team is formed to meet with different responsibilities at different levels. This is why a team is formed where every member is designated with particular responsibilities. This makes a team very important for achieving success. It also boosts the confidence among all team members and let everyone do the part perfectly. This is why teamwork is important.

4. What is the importance of teamwork? Explain?

Teamwork is important all over the world. It is important in a small business or a big organisation too. In our schools, we can see sports which can be won only by teamwork and effort. We saw how the mentors told us about teamwork and how important it is to achieve goals. Teamwork also improves the relationships between people working in the team which can motivate the people to work together and harder. This can lead to a high chance of getting successful.

5. Why is teamwork important for success?

Teamwork is always said to be the key to success. That is because when we work together as a team then it helps us learn from one another and also improves our knowledge. This in turn, makes us more creative, increases our knowledge and we can also expand a new skill set. When the team works towards a certain goal then this motivates everyone towards learning from one another and also having creative ideas which can be lacking when one works in solitude.

6. Why is teamwork considered effective?

It can be quite exhausting when we have to do tough work all by ourselves. It can lead to delays and also reduce our productivity. However, in a team, everyone has a common goal and shares similar visions and this can motivate the members present in the team. This leads to divided workload and also helps everyone to perform their best naturally.  Thus, teamwork is considered effective as it helps achieve goals easily and on time.

7. What is top level teamwork?

There are certain hierarchies that are related to teamwork where the workload is divided to different hierarchies so that only one part of the team is not working towards the goal alone. Top level hierarchy is the highest level of teamwork hierarchy present in the organisation or firm. This is the level where the team members set the goals that are needed to be achieved by the organisation or firm. They work towards increasing profits for the firm or organisations. Furthermore, they focus on understanding the needs and queries of the consumers of their organisation’s products or services.

8. What is the middle level of teamwork?

There are different hierarchies when we talk about teamwork and each group has different work and goals to achieve. Middle level hierarchy is the second level in an organisation or firm which comes after the top level hierarchy. It is mostly composed of supervisors and managers. They mainly work on the objectives or goals set by the top level team members and allot these goals to the employees or members working in the organisation or firm. They regularly check the work being done by the team members, supervises them and check whether the deadlines are met or not.

The importance of teamwork (as proven by science)

5-second summary

  • Research shows that collaborative problem-solving leads to better outcomes.
  • People are more likely to take calculated risks that lead to innovation if they have the support of a team behind them.
  • Working in a team encourages personal growth, increases job satisfaction, and reduces stress.

Anyone who thought the rise of distributed work would be the downfall of teamwork has probably changed their tune by now. The truth is, teamwork is more important than ever.

“The use of teams and collaboration expectations have been consistently rising,” says Dr. Scott Tannenbaum , a researcher and president of the Group for Organizational Effectiveness. “And when I say teams, I’m talking about all types of teams, whether it’s stable work teams [or] teams that now, in the current environment, are operating virtually.”

Teamwork is essential to a company’s success, says John J. Murphy, author of Pulling Together: 10 Rules for High-Performance Teamwork . “Each individual has unique gifts, and talents and skills. When we bring them to the table and share them for a common purpose, it can give companies a real competitive advantage.”

But here’s the real magic of teamwork: when done right, it has benefits that go far beyond boosting the company’s bottom line. (Learn about some classic models that can lead to stronger teamwork here .)

10 benefits of teamwork

1. teamwork enables better problem solving.

How to avoid groupthink on your team

How to avoid groupthink on your team

Albert Einstein gets all the credit for discovering the theory of relativity, but the truth is that he relied on conversations with friends and colleagues to refine his concept. And that’s almost always the case.

“Behind every genius is a team,” says Murphy. “When people play off each other’s skills and knowledge, they can create solutions that are practical and useful.”

Science reinforces the idea that many brains are better than one. “We found that groups of size three, four, and five outperformed the best individuals,” says Dr. Patrick Laughlin a researcher at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. “[We] attribute this performance to the ability of people to work together to generate and adopt correct responses, reject erroneous responses, and effectively process information.”

Not everyone processes information in the same way. Some people like to jump into problem-solving mode immediately, while others prefer time to gather their thoughts and consider multiple options before making a contribution. Asking people to provide input asynchronously allows everyone the space to work in a way that’s comfortable for them.

2. Teamwork unlocks potential for innovation

According to Frans Johansson, author of The Medici Effect , some of the most innovative ideas happen at “the intersection” – the place where ideas from different industries and cultures collide.

“Most people think success comes from surrounding yourself with others that are like you,” says Johansson. “But true success and breakthrough innovation involves discomfort. Discomfort pushes you to grow. This is where difference of experience, opinion, and perspective come in. Diversity is a well-documented pathway to unlocking new opportunities, overcoming new challenges, and gaining new insights.”

Better together: 8 essential teamwork skills to master

Better together: 8 essential teamwork skills to master

A recent report from the consulting firm McKinsey & Company backs this up. It found teams made up of members from diverse backgrounds (gender, age, ethnicity, etc.) are more creative and perform better by up to 35 percent, compared to more homogeneous teams. Instead of looking at an issue from your individual vantage point, you get a 360-degree picture, which can lead to an exponential increase in ideas.

Research from Tufts University suggests that just being exposed to diversity can shift the way you think. A study on a diverse mock jury found that interacting with individuals who are different forces people to be more open minded, and to expect that reaching consensus will take effort.

3. Teamwork makes for happier employees

As part of our ongoing research on teamwork, we surveyed more than 1,000 team members across a range of industries and found that when honest feedback, mutual respect, and personal openness were encouraged, team members were 80 percent more likely to report higher emotional well-being.

Having happy employees is a worthwhile goal in itself, but the company benefits, too. Research from the University of Warwick in England suggests happy employees are up to 20 percent more productive than unhappy employees. And who couldn’t benefit from a happiness boost?

4. Teamwork enhances personal growth

Being part of a team can help you grow. “By sharing information and essentially cross-training each other, each individual member of the team can flourish,” says Murphy. You might discover new concepts from colleagues with different experiences. You can also learn from someone else’s mistakes, which helps you sidestep future errors.

You might even learn something new about yourself, says Dr. Susan McDaniel, a psychologist at the University of Rochester Medical Center and one of the guest editors of America Psychologist’s special edition on “ The Science of Teamwork .”

“We all have blind spots about our behaviors and strengths that we may be unaware of, and feedback from a team member can expose them,” she says. Recognizing these strengths and addressing the weaknesses can make you a better team member, and even a better person. “Maybe working in a team you’ll discover you could be a better listener. That’s a skill you can grow in, and then take home and use to improve your family interactions,” McDaniel points out.

5. Teamwork lowers the risk of burnout

6 ways to bounce back from burnout

6 ways to bounce back from burnout

A Gallup study of nearly 7,500 full-time employees found that 23 percent of employees feel burned out at work very often or always. Another 44 percent say they sometimes feel this way. What helps? Sharing the load.

Team members can provide emotional support to each other because they often understand the demands and stress of completing work even better than managers, says Ben Wigert, lead researcher for Gallup’s workplace management practice.

And managers are not off the hook! The study also found that knowing your boss has your back protects against burnout too.

6. Teamwork gives opportunities for growth

Collaboration in the workplace isn’t unlike teamwork on the baseball diamond. When the pitcher and outfielders each excel at their individual roles, the team has a better chance of winning.

Off the playing field, that idea is more important than ever. Changes in technology and increased globalization mean that organizations are facing problems so complex that a single individual simply can’t possess all the necessary knowledge to solve them, says Wigert. When team members use their unique skills to shine in their own roles, it creates an environment based on mutual respect and cooperation that benefits the whole group, notes Murphy.

7. Teamwork boosts productivity

Getting a pat on the back from the boss can boost an employee’s motivation, but receiving kudos from a team member may be even more effective.

The TINYpulse Employee Engagement and Organizational Culture Report surveyed more than 200,000 employees. Participants reported that having the respect of their peers was the #1 reason they go the extra mile at work.

8. Teamwork allows for smarter risk-taking

When you work alone, you might be hesitant to put your neck on the line. When you work on a team, you know you have the support of the entire group to fall back on in case of failure. That security typically allows teams to take the kind of risks that create “Eureka!” ideas.

But here’s one place where size does matter. The most disruptive ideas often come from small teams, suggests recent research in the journal Nature , possibly because larger teams argue more, which can get in the way of coming up with those big ideas.

Wharton Business School researchers also discovered that small is the secret to success: they found that two-person teams took 36 minutes to build a Lego figure while four-person teams took 52 minutes to finish — more than 44 percent longer.

There’s no definitive ideal small team size, but consider following Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’ two-pizza rule : no matter how large your company gets, teams shouldn’t be larger than what two pizzas can feed.

9. Teamwork yields fewer mistakes

If your team has good energy – you encourage and inspire each other, and you have fun together – you’ll feel less stressed, says Murphy. “Studies show that stress makes us stupid, and leads us to make more mistakes,” says Murphy.

Of course, the converse is also true: when your team feels less frazzled, you’ll make fewer errors. That’s worth keeping in mind, especially if you’re one of the 61 percent of workers who cite work as a significant source of stress .

10. Teamwork sparks creativity

Stale solutions often come out of working in a vacuum. When people with different perspectives come together in group brainstorms, on the other hand, innovative ideas can rise to the surface – with one caveat. Research shows this can only happen when communication within the team is open and collaborative, notes Wigert. The most creative solutions can only come up when there’s a level of trust that lets team members ask ‘stupid’ questions, propose out-there ideas, and receive constructive criticism.

Essay on Teamwork and Leadership

I had never thought I was a leader until my first experience working in a group. We had to develop a project on sustainability for our biology class. I had the most knowledge in this sphere, so I became the leader of the team. This experience taught me to delegate tasks, solve unexpected problems, and be an active listener. Even if you know how to do something well, you need to be able to delegate. We were sewing tote bags for shopping. Although I am good at drawing, I assigned print design to my friend. She did the task well, and I had an opportunity to focus on cloth choice and sewing. I know that it would have been so much longer if I had done everything myself. Another challenging moment of working in a team is that the number of potential issues grows with the number of people. One of our boys got sick. I had to divide his responsibilities among the other team members, so everyone got an equal part. If you work in a team, you need to be ready to listen and take notes. As a leader of the group, I was responsible for making a final decision on each thought. Great ideas might be unexpected, and you never know who can come up with the next one. It happened on so many occasions in our team. We created our logo, chose the best materials and designs only because of the ability to support and respect each other’s ideas. In conclusion, I like the role of the leader of a team as I learned many things. I became better at managing others’ responsibilities, reacting to emerging issues, and observing others’ ideas. I look forward to further teamwork to improve these and other skills.

Essay on School Teamwork

You cannot just spend all your student years and not collaborate with others. There are times when you have to work in a team. It might be a group project or just someone’s initiative to do homework together. Teamwork is essential at school as it enables students to work on more significant projects, boosts creativity, and engages in the studying process. Several people can accomplish more than one person within the same timeframe. Besides, each team member has a different spectrum of knowledge and skills. More heads allow you to have more ideas and perform more tasks as a team. That is why companies hire new people to become more successful. Brainstorming is an excellent tool for developing new ideas. One student can have a good thought, while another one can make an action plan out of it. Being able to absorb and analyze each other’s opinions makes your mind more open to new ideas. In other words, it makes you more creative. Society is a person’s natural need. It is always more interesting to study with others. Even if you don’t have much motivation to examine a particular issue, you still learn it while communicating. It was always easier for me to listen to a person than to read a book. Teamwork motivates students to discuss their visions and thoughts, which makes them more involved. School is not only about books and formulas. It is also a place where you learn how to cooperate with other people. Eventually, you see that you can achieve more, broaden your outlook, and have more motivation to study with a good team.

Essay on Teamwork in the Workplace

Every great product is an achievement of teamwork. But how do you know that a team will be successful? There is no playbook as each case is unique, but several components are necessary for effective collaboration. The main factors that define a good team in the workplace are its diversity, efficient communication, and clearly defined responsibilities. It is beneficial for a team if the members have different backgrounds and are proficient in different areas of expertise. It helps to see complex problems from various angles and choose the best solutions. People who possess different strengths choose their roles in a team according to them. Of course, all the skills need to be relevant to the goal of the team. There should be no misunderstandings or communication delays. If something is not one hundred percent clear, it is better to ask additional questions to avoid making mistakes. Working in one place makes communication faster and more accessible for all the participants. That is why regular meetings and quick responses are a must for every team. When everyone knows what they are responsible for, there are fewer conflicts. It is vital to ensure that every team member does what they are good at without interfering with others’ tasks. Teamwork also involves the individual work of each participant that requires deep focus and no distraction. The best solution is to define the members’ responsibilities at the very beginning. Teamwork is essential if you aim to create something meaningful. You need people who will work as hard as you towards a mutual goal. Each particular case requires a specific approach, but certain things are always the same. If you want to do your best as a team, make sure the people you choose have different skills, establish fast communication, and provide them with clear areas of responsibility.

Feature image of Short Essay on Importance of teamwork

Teamwork is when a team or a group of people work together towards a common goal. Teamwork makes a task simpler and easier. Teamwork is needed among students working on an assignment together, players playing for a particular sports team as well as employees of any organisation working together to fulfil a task.

When a group of people work together, if everyone wants to do the task his way rather than listening to each other, the task will never be finished. That is why teamwork is important. When people listen to each other’s opinions, help each other and put their common goal before personal gain, they have great teamwork. Teamwork helps us achieve goals that can not be achieved alone.

Teamwork is the combined action taken by a group of people to achieve a common goal. We cannot always work alone. Sometimes, to fulfil a larger goal, many people need to come together and take combined action.

In school, students work as a team to finish group projects. In sports, members of a team must work together if they want to win. In corporations, if every employee is only focused on his personal goals, the corporation wouldn’t be able to function. When a group of people work together, if everyone wants to do the task his way rather than listening to each other and choosing the best way, the task will never be finished. That is why teamwork is important.

When people work as a team, they communicate with each other. They are free to express their views and opinions and others listen to them. Everyone has a duty assigned to them which they so diligently. It is their responsibility to make sure they are doing their part well or else the entire team will stop functioning well.

When a team has a good leader who is capable of encouraging, motivating, guiding and helping others in the team, teamwork becomes much easier. With good teamwork, a huge task may be finished in no time. Teamwork helps us achieve big goals which cannot be achieved individually.

Not all tasks can be done by a single person. Sometimes, to fulfil a larger goal, many people need to come together and take combined action. In school, students need to work together with their classmates to finish a group project. In sports, be it cricket, football or hockey, all the members of a certain team must work together and support each other in order to win a match.

No organisation can function without teamwork. If every employee is only focused on his personal goals and gains, the corporation wouldn’t be able to finish any of its projects. At home, if family members don’t understand and help each other, it will cause unnecessary issues and create tension.

We can see examples of teamwork even in the wild. Many animals display teamwork by hunting together as a group. While some members of the group distract the prey, others surround it, jump on it and kill it. Many wild animals also stay together to protect themselves and each other from danger as well as to raise their young.

When we look at large organisations, all the work there is divided and given to different departments. Even in those departments, hundreds of people do different work which is assigned to them by the head. Only when everyone is doing their work well, a department can finish the work assigned to them and in turn, the organisation can flourish. If any one department stops functioning, all other departments have to stop and wait as well.

It is not quite easy to keep working hard, matching the pace of everyone else. One can often get demotivated and slow down. That is why a good leader is very important in every team. A good leader is one who is capable of encouraging, motivating, guiding and helping others in the team. He makes working as a team easier.

It is very important for children to learn teamwork as it will help them throughout their lives. Teamwork also teaches about discipline and responsibility. When people work as a team, they communicate with each other about their problems. They are allowed to freely express their views and opinions and the other members listen to them.

Everyone has a duty assigned to them which they do very diligently. It is their responsibility to make sure they are doing their part well so that the team can keep functioning smoothly. With good teamwork, a huge task may be finished in no time. Teamwork helps us grow in every field of life and is the key to our success.

In this lesson, I have adopted a simplistic approach for a better understanding of all kinds of students. If anyone has any doubts regarding this topic, they can post them in the comment section below. I will try my level best to clarify those doubts.

A family is one of the greatest gift god has given to all living creatures on the earth including humans. It is a privilege to have a happy family as not everyone in the world has it.

The joy of living with your parents, fighting with your siblings over petty can just make you smile the moment you think of it. In order to inculcate the values of a family in the students, we have composed some short essays for students.

These essays are suited for students of all ages and classes. Not only these essays shall give an insight on how a family should be but shall also enrich the students with the moral values of a family.

Audience: The below given essays are exclusively written for kids, children and school students.

Family is important to every one of us and we all love our family. Wherever we go in this world and whatever we may achieve, our heart and soul will always be in our home because it is where our beautiful family is. Nothing in this world can be stronger than the bonding of the blood . The members of the same family may have differences of opinions, may quarrel often for silly things but in spite of all these it is our family that supports us during our ups and downs.

As the saying goes, “ Family is the best thing you could ever wish for. They are there for you during the ups and downs and love you no matter what”.

Contrary to this saying, we cannot choose our family as we choose our friends. But I can say that I’m blessed with a wonderful family. My family is very small with four members – my mother, my father, my elder sister and me. My family is a middle class family and my father is officially the bread winner of our family. My mother supports him financially by taking tuitions for school children.

We do not have much money or wealth but what my family has in abundance is love for each other which cannot be replaced by anything else in this world. My father and my mother are the role models to my sister and me. They struggle a lot to give us a better life. More than anything they have taught us discipline and morals of life which is helping us to lead our lives in a righteous path even today.

I cannot ask anything more to God since he has already showered me with my family which I treasure the most every second and will safeguard even in the future.

The family is a valuable god gift which plays a most crucial role in every individual’s life. I love my family very much because all of my family members stand in my good as well as bad times. From moral teachings to love and support, my family has always helped me without any demand. There is no doubt that we experience our biggest triumphs when we really connect to them.

My family is like a strong pillar for me, on which I can rely blindly anytime I require support. From my family, I have learned the social graces of loyalty & cooperation.

My family consists of my grandfather, my grandmother, my mother, my father, two young sisters and myself. My grandparents are the pillars of my family and my grandfather is the head of my family. He is the one whose decision relating to any matter is final and all of us do respect it.

Right from my childhood, my family members have prepared me for the challenges that I’ll face in the years ahead. In addition to this, all of my family members help and serve each other at times of need. These qualities that I have learnt from my family has helped me to shape my adult life in a right manner.

I am really very attached to my grandfather. He holds an excellent life experience because he has already faced so many ups and downs. My Grandfather has helped me to build my perception & vision towards society.

My family has always been there to motivate and encourage me to overcome all difficulties in life and achieve success. The role of every member in my family is unique and important in their own way. I thank God that I have grown up in a family full of love and discipline. My family values will definitely help me in becoming a better person.

A person without family and its love never becomes completely happy in his/her life. I am complete and happy with my family that includes five members. My family is a group of five including me, father, mother, brother, and sister. Family bonding is a unique type of love that gives you every lesson needed to live a harmonious life.

Growing under the supervision of a caring and loving family will increase our social values and overall well-being. Each member of my family carries out equal responsibility in sculpting the strong bonding needed for a better future and develop moral importance in each other.

My father owns a successful business of office stationery store. He uses the money to cover all our expenses and give a better lifestyle to the family. He works hard day and night to get us better education, food, home, etc. He hides all his tiredness when he comes home after a long day to spend quality time with us.

My mother is a talented homemaker who also does a part-time tailoring at home. She does all her duties with at most interest, from taking care of us to all the household chores and finds time to pursue her passion as well. She is a multi-tasker and does all the tasks from helping us in our studies to preparing delicious healthy foods to sculpt us into a better human being.

My brother is an engineering graduate and does a job in a well-known company. He is my best well-wisher and helps me in all ups and downs. My sister is also an engineering graduate and an employee in an IT company. She always finds time to help me with all my difficulties and she is my secret keeper too.

My family is a lifeline to whom I can run to, whatever may be the situation I am facing. My family guides me to be a good person and help me in nurturing good values. We, humans, are animals that live together spreading love and care for each other, and this togetherness is called family. The absence of such a divine bonding make us equal to animals.

Family value and growing in such a caring surrounding helps me to pass all the struggles and hardships that I face in my daily life. Whatever be the situation we are facing, our family will never leave us alone. My family is a blessing for me and I value everyone in my family with equal respect and love.

Most of the people in the world are blessed with having a family. A family, with whom you can share all your joys and sorrows, who is there to guide you through your growing years, who stands by you in the toughest of the situations. I too am blessed to have such a family.

My family is one the most bizarre family in the world. We are four people, my mother, my father, my younger brother and me. While my father is the one who does work for a living, it is my mother who is the boss of the house. My father is a humble person. He is an officer in a government department. My mother is a housewife. It is our mother who takes care of our studies as our father is often busy with his official assignments and even travels for days together. We just miss him when he is not at home.

He never scolds us. But, our mother is just the opposite. She wants us to remain disciplined and we often get scolded by her. However, our father comes to our rescue most of the times. My brother, still in school is the one with whom I love to spend my time the most. Not because I love to play with him, but because, being the elder sister, I enjoy instructing him and showing him who is more powerful at home. He, at a time, seems so helpless when our mother says to obey his sister. I just love that moment. But not all days are the same. I hate having to study all along while he gets to play more than me.

The Atmosphere in my Family:

We largely have a peaceful atmosphere at home. After school, our time is spent on studying, playing and watching television, which of course our mother does not like. Unlike other couples, my mother and father seldom have a fight. In fact, as soon we see an argument brewing up, one of them just withdraws and it is just rare to see a heated conversation between them. This is what I like the most about them as I feel that my parents are so cool. It is only me and brother who love to fight with each other.

However, we know that behind those fights, it is actually our love for each other which binds us together. I just enjoy being at home spending time with my parents and my brother. I just feel how bad it would be when tomorrow I and my brother shall move on for our professional lives and we shall not be able to spend much time together. However, it is the memories of today which shall be with me forever and will bring a smile on my face anytime when I feel low.

The Importance of a Family:

A family is said to be the first school of a child. It is from here you start to learn how to speak, walk and interact with the world. It is important to value the importance of a family in one’s life. At times, people feel that they are grown-ups and that their parent’s advice does not matter anymore, but that is not true. It is the elders of the family who at any given of time would know the world better than us and we should all respect our family members and love our siblings as well. It is the family who builds our character and we should feel fortunate to have a family around us.

Introduction

My family values are what I take so dear to my heart because they have made me what I am today and I plan on passing these great values to my children in future. Every family has those things, acts and values that they hold in high esteem and they cherish so much. These vales have become a part of them: most times, it is what distinguishes the traits in each family and in some ways it makes or mars the future of the family members. Same applies to my family, we have some set values that has become a part of us and it has made my life a lot better because I have become a better person who is not only valuable to himself but also to the society at large. I will be sharing some of these values with you.

My Family Values:

Some of my family values include:

1. Honesty:

This is a principle that is highly protected in my family. My dad has this saying that, “honesty is the best policy.” Ever since I was little, my family has taught me how to be honest and the benefits that lie within. Sometimes, my parents even test us in ways we were not expecting and a reward is given to the person that comes out honest. This is one of my family values that I cherish so much and I am proud that it is what my family hold in high esteem.

2. Kindness to Others:

This is not a common trait to all. My mom has this belief that if the world and everybody in it shows love and kindness to one another, there will be no hatred and wars will be eradicated. This is a family value that we cherish so much. I learnt to show love to everybody. Even when we did not have much, my parents will still give to those who are needy. My dad says that the world is like a river, we would eventually flow into one another later and you do not know the future, the person you helped today might eventually be of help to you tomorrow.

3. Education:

This is a value that has been passed from generation to generation in my family. My dad would say that education is the best legacy you can give to a child. My family does everything in their capacity for you to get a sound and benefitting education. The acquisition of knowledge is also quite important. All of us try to gain more and more knowledge because we all have a family slogan that says “knowledge is power and that power makes me a hero.”

4. Dress and Appearance:

This is a religious value we cherish in my family. My dad would say that you are addressed the way you dress. I do not want to be address wrongly and give out a wrong impression. So, our appearance really matter a lot to us and the way we dress.

Conclusion:

Every family has one thing or the other that they hold in high esteem and tend to pass on from generation to generation. This is what makes a family a united sect not because we are related by blood but because of we share the same values.

Introduction:

Why I love my family is a question that has been floating through my mind for a very long time because no matter how hard I try to pin out a reason why I love them, I just can’t find one. This can be due to fact that they mean the whole world to me and I will do anything for them. I love my family a lot and I would like to share some of the reasons why I love my family and will never trade them for anything.

Why I Love My Family:

I have a family that consists of 6 people: my father, my mother and four children which includes me. For you to understand why I love my family I will tell you a little about each of them and why I love them so much.

My father is the best father in the world: well, that’s what I say. He is a business manager. I look up to my father a lot because I will like to take a lot of his behaviours and make it mine. He taught me to be contented with whatever I have. We did not have much when I was growing up; my dad lost his job and still did not allow anything of the pressure change how he behaved to us at home. He is caring, gentle, accommodating and disciplined.

My mum is the best cook in the world. I do not know where I would be today without my mum. I owe her a lot. She is a teacher by profession and this fascinates me a lot because not only is she inculcating knowledge in the young minds of tomorrow, she is also building the future of our society at large. I want to be like my mum. I remember those times when she had to sacrifice when the most precious of her things just to make me happy. She is loving, caring, understanding, accommodating. In fact, she is everything you can ever wish for in a mother.

My elder sisters are the best. Although they can be frustrating sometimes but that is mostly because of my stubbornness. They pretend they do not really care but deep inside they do. The things they do even subconsciously say otherwise. I remember a day in elementary school, I was being bullied a boy in class. On this particular day, he hit me. Unknowing to me, my sister heard about it and she beat the boy and made him apologise to me, I felt so happy that day because I had someone who had my back.

My brother is one of the best gifts I have received. He is the last child and this gives him an opportunity to be annoying if you know what I mean. He is joyful and always ready to heed correction. There was this day, I heard him bragging to his friends about how awesome I am, and I was the happiest that day.

We all have one reason or the other on why we love our family. I love mine because they are the best gift I could ever ask for and the fact that they have been there for me through the good, bad and funny times.

Importance of family is something that is greatly overlooked and underrated in the world we live in today. The definition that the family had about one hundred years before now was very clear. Back then, a family was believed to be a unit that consisted of the father that was in charge of the finances of the family, a mother whose primary duty was to look after the home and take care of the children and then there were the children. Largely based on the region you are from, a family can also include members of the extended family like aunts, uncles and grandparents. This type of family system is referred to as joint family.

Family Importance:

A family that is important is one that is very strong. If a family is going to be very strong, there is a need for the bond between them to be very strong. Bonds that help in keeping the members of a family with each other are relationships. If there are very strong relationships among all the members of a family, there is going to be stronger commitment between all of them and the family as a unit will be very important.

Better communication is also a result of family relationships that are very strong. If all the family members can take time out to talk and know each other well, the bond between them is bound to be very strong. Even if the conversations are about big things or small things, it does not really matter. The most important thing is that all family members stay connected to one another. It is very important that they all list to each other and understand every member.

How to make Family Bonds Very Strong:

We have various things that can help our family bond to improve.

A few of them include:

1. Love: love is the most important thing we need for our bonds as a family to improve. When we love the members in our family, we will also be able to know all about privacy, intimacy, caring, belonging and sharing. When there is love in a family, the family will prosper.

2. Loyalty: loyalty is something that comes as a result of love. Family members should stay devoted to each other. It is important that we are able to count on our family to have our back anytime we are facing problems.

The importance of family can never be overstated even though we live in a different time now and our attitudes to relationships, marriage and what a family should be has changed. The family is something that we need to help share our problems and be there for us anytime we have issues. A lot of the things that were not acceptable in the past and we now see as normal. Even with all the changes that the society has effected on our family system, the family still remains the major foundation of our society and this will remain the same.

My family is the best gift I have got. A family can be simply said to mean a social group of different people in our society that includes one or more parents and also their children. In a family, every member of the family commits to other members of the family in a mutual relationship. A family is a very important unit and the smallest unit in the society. A family whether a big one or a small one is of very great importance and use to all of its members and is believed to be the unit of our society that is strongest because the society is formed from the coming together and culmination of various families.

In many cultures, the family serves a child’s first school where the child learns all about their traditions and cultures more importantly learn about all the rudimentary values in life. A family is very essential in the teaching of healthy habits and good manners to all the members of the family. It gives the members of the family the opportunity to become people with better character in our society. I feel very lucky to be born into a small and lovely family; I learnt a lot of things from my family.

I am from a middle class and average family with six members (my father, my mother, my grandmother, my grandfather, my younger brother and me). My grandfather is the head of the family and we all respect and listen to him. He is really wise and tries to advise each and every one of us using his many life experiences. He has been involved in many interesting and adventurous activities that he tells me about all the time. Most of the time, he has the final say on all of our family issues and he does his best to make all his decisions impartial.

Any time we are eating today as a family, he sits at the top of the table; we all have designated seats at the dining table. When my brother and I are available, my grandfather teaches us about our traditions and cultures. My grandfather is very friendly and has a cool and great personality and tries to talk nicely and calmly to everyone passing across his message without being rude. He helps my brother and sometimes me with our assignments. He majorly teaches us about all of the tools we need to be successful in life including punctuality, discipline, moral, cleanliness, continuity, honesty, hard work and trustworthiness.

My lovely grandmother is one of the nicest people I know, she tells my brother and I lovely stories every night. My father is a civil engineer and he is very hardworking, sincere and punctual. He is the breadwinner of the family and does his best to provide for every member of the family even if that means he has to work extra hours. My mother is very sweet and takes care of every member of the family even though she works as an accountant at a firm. She wakes up very early in the morning to make preparations for the day. My brother is a funny and jovial person that enjoys sporting activities and I love him so much.

Sometimes I wish my cousins, uncles and aunts lived with us, I love having them around. There are a lot of advantages and disadvantages of having everyone around. I have highlighted some below.

Some advantages are:

1. It gives a better routine of living that can contribute to a proper growth.

2. Having a joint family helps in following the numerous principles of an equitable economy and helps teach discipline and respect. It also teaches us how to share the burden of other family members.

3. There is the understanding of having to adjust to the needs of other family members.

4. The children in a large family get to grow up in a happy environment because they have children of their age around that they can play with.

5. All the members of a joint family are usually very disciplined and responsible as everyone has to follow the instructions of the family head.

Some of the disadvantages include:

1. There is always the chance of a rift or fight between the family members because of the possible imbalance of feelings of oneness, brotherly love and feeling of generosity.

2. There is a chance of the members of the family that earn very high looking down on members of the family that do not.

The concept of family is important in India for every individual. Family defines an individual background in terms of social relations and growth. Families influence the lives of individuals from childhood to adulthood especially in decisions concerning life milestones like marriage and career paths. Indian families live together for up to four generations under one roof and they manage to maintain lose family relations compared to other families across the globe. Indian families tend to stick to their cultural practices as a family and they maintain religious practices that cut across the family. Elders in Indian families are respected by the members of the family and their opinions are considered during decision making.

What Family Really Means :

Basic knowledge defines a family as a group of people who share genetic and legal bonds. However, the concept of family means a lot more for other people than just the bond and it incorporates the concepts of culture and religion. In India, the concept of family differs from what the rest of the world perceives as family.

Families in India go beyond nuclear and extend to wider circles, whereby the extended family lives together and are closely related. The relationships in the family are strong such that cousins are considered siblings and aunts and uncles are considered parents. Family also means the unconditional love among the members of the family whereby there is support in terms of finances and emotions.

Why the Family is so important:

The family plays a central role in lives of individuals in teaching of moral values. Parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents have been known to teach the children on morality and disciplinary issue s in most cultures. Both spiritual and moral values are instilled through family. Family give a sense of belonging to individuals because they are over by the family and supported at all times.

A family will always support its members with needs including financial and emotional needs. In a family, there has been established levels of satisfaction and happiness from the joy of being together. Families also helping community development through contributions and participating in activities in the community. The family is important in the society in maintaining order, discipline and peace.

I come from a big family. My family has not moved to an urban area and so we still live as a wider circle together with the extended family. In my nuclear family, I am the first born of four children. I have one sister and two brothers who are still at school. I have three aunts and two uncles. My cousins are twelve in number and most of them are at school except for the youngest ones.

My grandparents are very old and they do not get out of the house much and are being taken care by my parents and aunts. Most of the children are always at school and the house gets quiet but during holiday, we all unite together as a full house. My family is of the middle class in terms of wealth. Our religion is Hindu and we all practice the Indian cultures and traditions. What I love about my family is that everyone is a good cook and the food is always amazing. Members of my family are kind and respectful and that is why we rarely have disputes. The family support is strong and we all love each other.

Why I love My Family:

Having a big family is interesting because the house always feels warm. As I had earlier mentioned, my family is made of good cooks, which makes me love them. There is always teamwork within the family and good relationships are maintained. I like the adventurous nature of my family because we always have fun whenever we go for holiday vacations or have a family event.

Moral cultural and spiritual values are highly cared for in the society. My family is oriented in good moral values and believe we make a good role model for the society. Despite the influence of education, the family has been able to maintain the culture and traditions of Indian people. The love that exists in my family is precious and that is the most important value of all times because what family without love?

Our Weekend Outings and House Parties:

We do not have many of these in our family because of the different schedules among the members. We only have weekend outings and house parties during holidays. Birthday parties are and weddings are the parties that we frequently have as a family. I love parties at home because the food is usually exceptionally good. Also, the dancing and happy faces. Weekend outings are usually in form of picnics and they are usually full of games.

Cousins Visit during Summer:

My family is young and only three of my cousins are in college. The rest are in high school or elementary schools. Whenever my cousins come home from school, it is a happy moment for the whole family and we host parties to welcome them home. Whenever my older cousins are at home, I enjoy their company and I love to hear stories about college because that is where I will be in a few years’ time.

In the spirit of holidays, we have a vacation or two in a year. During these vacations, plans begin early and when the time comes, it is enjoyable and relaxing. Vacations for us as children tend to be more enjoyable because we have an environment away from home and with minimal parental supervision and we tend to explore and talk among ourselves. Team building during vacations strengthens the bond in families.

Family is a blessing to individuals because that is where they belong and it is what defines them. A good family is built through moral values and team effort. Having family events and parties or vacations re important is strengthening the relationships within a family. A happy individual is definitely from a happy family.

When everyone in the team works together to accomplish goals, everyone achieves more. Successful teams are characterised by a team spirit based on trust, mutual respect, helpfulness and friendliness. This teamwork essay will help students understand the importance of working as a team and how effective teamwork is. Also, it has been explained with the help of a short story.

Students can go through the list of CBSE essays comprising different topics to practise essay writing. Doing so will help them to score higher marks in the writing section. Moreover, they will be able to participate in essay writing competitions conducted at their schools.

500+ Words Essay on Teamwork

Teamwork means the ability of people to work together. It occurs when the members of a team work together and utilise their individual skills to achieve a common goal. It is a cooperative process that allows ordinary people to achieve extraordinary results. A team has a common goal or purpose where team members can develop effective, mutual relationships to achieve team goals.

Successful teamwork relies upon synergism existing between all team members. Team members create an environment where they are all willing to contribute and promote and nurture a positive, effective team environment. Team members are flexible enough to adapt to cooperative working environments. The goals are achieved through collaboration and social interdependence rather than individualised, competitive goals.

Importance of Teamwork

It is rare that a piece of work is successfully completed by a single individual working alone without interacting with anyone. With teamwork, the work gets done more quickly and with higher quality. Teamwork helps to promote deep learning, which occurs through interaction, problem-solving, dialogue, cooperation and collaboration. Shared goals can easily be achieved by working together and pooling experience and expertise.

Teamwork has emerged in recent years as one of the most important ways of organising work. Many organisations have realised that teamwork enables employees to perform better, hence resulting in good organisational performance. Teamwork has the potential to improve the performance of individual employees and the organisation. Teamwork helps in developing the skills and perspectives of the employees through positive opinions, feedback, experiences and viewpoints. Teamwork is an important tool that is used to carry out varied functions accurately and efficiently. The core value of teamwork is the reduction of workload, which helps the employees perform better without any kind of work pressure because the tasks are distributed equally among all the members.

The Magic of Teamwork

Here is a short story that will help you to understand the importance of teamwork. Once upon a time, in a jungle, there was a monkey and an elephant who were good friends. One day an unusual quarrel happened between the two about who was better. Each one thinks of himself to be better than the other. While the elephant advocated it was better to be strong, the monkey was adamant that being fast and agile was better.

Unable to resolve the matter, they headed to the wise owl and posed the same question to him. The owl promised to answer the question provided they had to take a challenge. They had to go far away across the river, where a golden fruit was hung on a tall tree. Whosoever will bring the fruit will be the best.

So, the monkey and the elephant set out on their journey to bring the fruit to the wise owl. When the monkey reached the banks of the river, he realised that the river was too deep for him and the currents too strong. The elephant saw his friend and asked the monkey to climb on his back, and together they crossed the river. When they reached the tree, the elephant tried to push the tree. But the tree was huge and wouldn’t budge. So the monkey climbed up the tree and plucked the fruit. He climbed down, sat on the elephant’s back, and they reached the wise owl.

The owl then asked, “Of the two of you, who brings this fruit to me?” The monkey said he did because he plucked the fruit from the tree and the elephant said he did because he helped the monkey get onto the other side of the river. At this point, the wise owl stopped the argument and said, “Each one of us has unique abilities and strengths. Collectively as a team, we can achieve the impossible. All because we used your strength at the right time to do the right thing.”

Teamwork is the collective effort made by each member of a team to achieve the team goal. Individually, we all have certain skills, and we are good in one area. If all of us come together and use our strength and expertise in the right direction, then it will give the best result. Also, it gives an opportunity to each member to learn something new from each other.

Students must have found this teamwork essay useful for improving their essay-writing skills. They can get the study material and the latest updates on CBSE/ICSE/State Board/Competitive Exams at BYJU’S.

Bruce Drysdale 5th-grade student advances to national finals in DAR's essay contest

family teamwork essay

Bruce Drysdale fifth grader Lia Martinonis has advanced to the national finals in the Daughters of the American Revolution 2024 Essay Contest, and each time her essay has advanced, her family has celebrated with a cake.

She is anxiously hoping for more cake. Martinonis is one of eight fifth-grade finalists in the nation, and so far, she's won three awards for her essay — one at the local level, one at the state level and the latest for the Southeastern Division.

"I am unbelievably proud. I have felt both shocked and pleased each time I learned that I had won," she said.

And there's prize money involved: $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place and $250 for third place. The winners will be recognized at the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Continental Congress, which is being held June 26-30 in Washington, D.C.

The topic for the contest was “Stars and Stripes Forever.” Essay writers were asked to imagine they were a newspaper reporter for The Philadelphia Times on May 14, 1897, and the newspaper's editor asked them to attend and report on the first public performance of John Philip Sousa’s new march, “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” The students were to tell about Sousa’s life and the story behind the song.

Lia was with her family on April 20 in Durham to receive the state award, her mother, Andrea, said.

"This essay contest has been an incredible experience for Lia. My daughter aspires to be a writer when she grows up," Andrea Martinonis said. "This opportunity has given her the confidence to pursue that dream. Lia researched the essay subject, learned about American history, honed her writing skills, and read her speech to a large audience at the initial award ceremony.

"As an educator, I couldn't be more pleased that DAR sponsors this contest, encouraging students to write essays and learn about our nation's past. As a parent, I am thrilled that my daughter chooses to spend her free time reading and writing and that her interests and skills are being recognized."

Lia said her teacher, April Summey, assigned the essay contest to her class.

"I remember being frustrated when drafting my essay, but now I am so glad my hard work paid off. I still cannot believe this is all happening," Lia Martinonis said.

This part of her essay describes Sousa talking about composing his new march:

"...Sousa said that he composed the song in his head on his return to America as he grieved the death of his beloved band manager, David Blakely. Sousa said, “In a kind of dreamy way, I used to think over old days at Washington when I was leader of the Marine Band
when we played at all public functions, and I could see the Stars and Stripes flying from the flagstaff.” He also stated, “And that flag of ours became glorified
And to my imagination it seemed to be the biggest, grandest flag in the world, and I could not get back under it quick enough.”

Summey called Lia a phenomenal, gifted student who "always goes above and beyond."

"She thrives on a challenge and is an avid learner. Her contagious curiosity shines brightly as she lights up upon acquiring new knowledge," Summey said. "Every year, my fifth grade students work on the DAR essay. They are given a prompt and required to read multiple primary and secondary sources about the topic in order to prepare. I am very passionate about the contest, because it helps students learn history and get excited about it."
