On the Importance of Education

Profile image of Francis Ameh

It is no news that education forms an intrinsic part of man’s life. As such, an individual without education is as good as a man born blind, groping blindly in the dark world without any guideline principles to model himself. Just like culture, education is a means of transmitting a way of life from one generation to the other. By this, education cannot be divorced from both the learners and the society which they ultimately help to build. However, the quality as well as the personnel involved in education has widely become an issue of great concern to the world at large. The reason being that, the task and process of educating people cannot be entrusted in the hands of unskilled personnel, in other words, mediocre, for in sure, it will only lead to a dead end. In recognition of the foregoing matter of fact, this piece shall shed light on the importance of education. To achieve this feat, this piece shall kick off with a definitional analysis of education, to be followed by the importance of education. The study ends with a conclusion which is a peroration of our main findings and claims.

Ogunleye, B. O. (2009). Students' background in science, mathematical ability and practical skills as determinants of performance in senior secondary school chemistry. Abstract The need for Chemistry education and the invaluable role it plays in the development of the present day technology-driven society as well as the empowerment of students both for meaningful living and for career place the subject at a vantage position among the science subjects. To achieve the goals of chemistry education, the quality of students offering tiie-subject becomes relevant. This study therefore investigated students' background in science, mathematical ability and practical skills as determinants of performance in Chemistry. Three instruments: Mathematical Ability Test (r=0.74). Practical Skills Rating Scale (r=0.81) and Test on Students' Performance in Chemistry (r=0.72) were used for data collection from 503 chemistry students from Ibadan metropolis in Oyo State, Nigeria. Results revealed that the 3 factors positively correlate with students' performance while mathematical ability and background in science predicted the dependent measure. It was, therefore, recommended that the 2 predictors should be considered in placing students in the science class and by implication, chemistry class while practical skills should be given the required attention by Chemistry teachers in the course of teaching the subject.

The Nigerian educational system is based on the objectives that the system should be able to build a free, just and egalitarian society and a united, strong and self reliant nation among others. Achievement of these objectives depends largely on the quality of education given to the citizens. To develop capacity to learn, acquire knowledge and skills that are essential for transformation of individual and national values, there is need for learners to imbibe socially acceptable behaviours and positive habits that are necessary for development of self and the Nigerian society. Quality must be injected into the educational system to bring about the desired transformation in people. Social Studies is a discipline that helps students to imbibe healthy social habits and values and ensures that the right attitude to life is developed in them. It develops positive attitudes such as honesty, dedication, hard work, justice, integrity, cooperation etc in learners. This paper therefore discusses the importance and relevance of social studies to development of good character and values. These social attitudes are necessary for gainful living of individuals, smooth relationship among the people and healthy development of the society. The paper recommends that social studies be given priority at all levels of education in Nigeria.

Osakue Omoera

The Department of Theatre and Media Arts, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma (DTMA-AAU) took off as Theatre Arts Department in the 1996/1997 academic session as a unit under the Department of English. Since then no historical evaluation or critical study has been carried out on it with regard to quality assurance or service delivery in the areas of teaching, learning and research as a rib of humanistic study. Given such a scenario, certain facts may be lost to history and fundamental values ignored, if issues are not put under the arc light to get apposite perspectives, which may redound to national development. It is in view of this that this article employs historical-analytic and evaluative approaches to examine the state of affairs in the DTMA-AAU since its creation, and related issues in the Nigerian university system, with a view to improving the lot of theatre and media arts studies as an academic field in Nigeria. The study observes that poor funding, derisory human and material resources constitute the main challenges that the DTMA-AAU is confronted with. Consequently, the article argues that there is the need to improve on funding, staffing, infrastructure and curriculum design to reflect current trends in theatre and media arts studies. It further contends that, among other things, DTMA-AAU stakeholders, with the support of the Ambrose Alli University authorities should review the theatre and media arts studies programme to allow for the creation of the Faculty of Creative Arts (FCA), which would then be put before the National University Commission (NUC) for further review and possible implementation in the Nigerian university system. Such a deliberate effort will provide robust templates for more effective teaching, learning and research activities in the multifaceted discipline. In this way, viable degree options of radio and television studies, children dramatics, print media, costume and make up studies, dance studies, music, graphics and animation, theatre and cultural management, film studies, dramatic arts, etc, would have been given a lifeline to flourish. Apart from helping to equip students on the programme with marketable skills and multi-talent competencies, which are required of them in an increasingly competitive and knowledge-based society, an enforced FCA regime is expected to strengthen the Entrepreneurship Studies (ES) course that every Nigerian undergraduate is now expected to offer. As well, the internally generated revenue (IGR) drive of the Nigerian university system would have be bolstered because a well primed FCA will be the hub of creative and entertainment industries in Nigeria.

Educational reform has been so misconstrued and confused with the concepts of educational change, educational innovation and educational planning which the paper clarifies. The thrust of the paper therefore, is the identification in the Nigerian education system of the policy indigestion and implementation diarrhea. It is further claimed that the provisions of the National Policy on Education (NPE) 2004, are enough to cause the desired changes in the Nigerian system of education, if implementation is given a serious attention. The various aspects of the NPE’s provisions are apparently examined. The paper equally clarifies that it does not mean that there is nothing to be changed in the system, but the implementation of the well thought out provisions of the NPE. A considerable attention is also paid to the earlier reforms which had crumbled and greeted with criticisms, leading to its revocation for another ones which of course stand revocation again. Suggestions are rendered to allow policy stay for use through implementation and appraisal for if reforms are then necessary. Attitudinal change, eschewing corruption, training and retraining of staff, provision of equipment and facilities, as well as funding and sincere commitment to promoting Nigerian education are all recommended. The study seeks to find out the relationship of students perception of the objectives of social studies at the NCE level and their attitude to religious tolerance. It examined the adequacy of the social studies curriculum at the NCE level and its relevance in achieving religious and peaceful coexistence among students in colleges of education. This study was driven by the desire of the researchers to see social studies attain its laudable objectives and full potentials in the teacher education in Nigeria. Data in this st and a post-test questionnaire designed by the researchers and validated by experts. test was a repetition of the previously administered questionnaires to the students after they had undergone educational session Pearson's Correlation Coefficient < 0.05) relationship between student's perception of the NCE social studies objectives and their attitude to religious tolerance. O ne of the first questions that arises when discussing free child primary education often concerns just how important schooling is to children, families, and society as a whole. And while it is well understood and quite obvious that education is essential for the development of the individual, what we find is that by offering primary education to children, a host of benefits resound throughout the community, often for years (and decades) following the schooling itself. In fact, it seems that almost every aspect of one’s life, particularly as it relates to socioeconomic rights, is in some way or another connected to the right to education. Thus, I shall discuss just how important education is to personal health, the welfare of children and family, and income and employment opportunities, among other things.

Importance of Education Essay

Education is one of the key components for an individual’s success. It has the ability to shape one’s life in the right direction. Education is a process of imparting or acquiring knowledge, and developing the powers of reasoning and judgement. It prepares growing children intellectually for a life with more mature understanding and sensitivity to issues surrounding them. It improves not only the personal life of the people but also their community. Thus, one cannot neglect the significance of Education in life and society. Here, we have provided an essay on the Importance of Education. Students can use this essay to prepare for their English exam or as a speech to participate in the school competition.

Importance of Education

The importance of education in life is immense. It facilitates quality learning for people throughout their life. It inculcates knowledge, belief, skill, values and moral habits. It improves the way of living and raises the social and economic status of individuals. Education makes life better and more peaceful. It transforms the personality of individuals and makes them feel confident.

Well said by Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon to change the world”. To elaborate, it is the foundation of the society which brings economic wealth, social prosperity and political stability. It gives power to people to put their views and showcase their real potential. It strengthens democracy by providing citizens with the tools to participate in the governance process. It acts as an integrative force to foster social cohesion and national identity.

In India, education is a constitutional right of every citizen. So, people of any age group, religion, caste, creed and region are free to receive education. An educated person is respected everywhere and well-treated in society. As a kid, every child dreams of being a doctor, lawyer, engineer, actor, sportsperson, etc. These dreams can come true through education. So, investment in education gives the best return. Well-educated people have more opportunities to get a better job which makes them feel satisfied.

In schools, education is divided into different levels, i.e., preschool, primary, secondary and senior secondary. School education comprises traditional learning which provides students with theoretical knowledge. However, now various efforts are being made to establish inbuilt application-based learning by adding numerous experiments, practicals and extracurricular activities to the school curriculum. Students learn to read, write and represent their viewpoints in front of others. Also, in this era of digital Education, anyone can easily access information online at their fingertips. They can learn new skills and enhance their knowledge.

Steps Taken By Government To Promote Education

Education is evidently an important aspect that no government can ignore in order to ensure the equitable development of a nation. Unfortunately, some children still do not have access to education. The Government has thereby taken initiatives to improve education quality and made it accessible to everyone, especially the poor people.

The Government passed the Right to Education Act 2009 (RTE Act 2009) on 4 August 2009. This Act came into effect on 1 April 2010, following which education has become the fundamental right of every child in India. It provides free and compulsory elementary education to children of the age group of 6-14 years in a neighbourhood school within 1 km, up to Class 8 in India. On similar lines, there are other schemes launched by the government, such as Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan , Mid-Day Meal , Adult Education and Skill Development Scheme, National Means cum Merit Scholarship Scheme, National Program for Education of Girls at Elementary Education, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, Scheme for Infrastructure Development in Minority Institutions, Beti Bachao , Beti Padhao, etc.

For our country’s growth, we require a well-educated population equipped with the relevant knowledge, attitude and skills. This can be achieved by spreading awareness about the importance of Education in rural areas. There is a famous saying that “If we feed one person, we will eliminate his hunger for only one time. But, if we educate a person, we will change his entire life”. Henceforth he will become capable of earning a livelihood by himself.

Frequently Asked Questions on Education Essay

How can the literacy rate in india be increased.

People in rural areas must be informed about the importance of providing education to their children. Also, with the COVID-19 situation, the government should take steps by providing laptops/phones for children to follow online classes.

Are girl children still denied their right to get educated?

Although awareness has now improved, there are still many villages in India where girl children are not provided with proper education or allowed to enrol themselves in schools. This mentality has to change for the betterment of the society.

Teaching subjects/academics alone is enough, or should students be introduced to other forms of educational activities too?

Extracurricular activities, moral value education, etc., are also as important as regular academic teachings.

Tips on Writing a Reflective Essay

Writing a reflective essay is not persuasive writing where you have to convince your readers to accept your opinion. You simply have to share an experience.

1. Write a draft. Do not jump hastily onto formal writing . Write a draft where you can create a bulleted list of the things that  you want to share.

2. Think logically. When presenting a story, do it in a chronological manner so that your readers can understand the plot. Do this as well when presenting your ideas.

3. Create a summary. Use a summary writing to briefly state your insights and to give your final thoughts of the topic.

Importance of a Reflective Essay

In this era that we currently live in, personal reflection can be considered a thing of the past. Because of the gradual change and development of the things around us, we find it difficult to pause and reflect on the things that happen to our lives. You may also see academic essay examples .

The importance of  writing an essay is to present to us the things that we rarely encounter in our day-to-day activities. In this time when material things are all that mattered, we have become unappreciative of the abstract things like love, compassion, and mercy. We cannot learn these things from those electronic gadgets that keep us busy.

How to Start a Reflective Essay Correctly

As mentioned above, a reflective essay presents and narrates the experience of a writer and how it changes the way he/she perceives life. In a simpler sense, it talks about how the author reflected on a certain adventure. As an essayist, since it’s you who bears the story and lessons, you are the one who is responsible for expressing it.

Just like any other composition, it’s your introduction that catches the attention of the reader. Thus, in order for your essay to be fully read, it is important to start your essay remarkably. If you find writing an introduction for your reflective essay challenging, don’t worry, you’re not alone. In this section, we are going to slowly tackle the ways to compose a compelling introduction.

1. Being catchy is the key.

In writing your reflective essay, you must start with something that would captivate the readers right away. Since the purpose of the introduction is to grab some attention, you may include some unique and interesting facts or beliefs. In this part, showcase your creativity by adding an introduction that is written in a bizarre manner and not those that depict cliché experience. You may also utilize a highly moving quotation or a dialogue that would also be appropriate for your reader.

2. Write the thesis statement in one sentence.

A thesis statement refers to the sentence that carries the topic being discussed in the whole essay. Therefore, it bears the central idea in which your essay revolves around. In writing your own essay, construct this statement in a clear and concise sentence. In this way, the reader will have a better grasp of your topic and would be clearly oriented on what you want to convey. In most cases, thesis statements are written at the end of the introduction.

3. Stick to the first person POV.

Remembering that this essay is subjective and depends on the author’s interpretation, it is important to use the first person point of view. By using this POV, it would be easier for you to convey your thoughts and opinions, and it would engage you to the readers like you’re telling a story in person. The first person involves the pronouns I , me , my , and mine .

4. Keep it brief.

When it comes to writing your own essay, you must perceive what your readers feel or see in reading your composition. Always put into mind that readers also have their own time to spend, and without a mark in the writing industry, people won’t invest much time on reading your essay. Thus, it is important to keep your composition concise. You can utilize a paragraph of five to ten sentences in your introduction. Using this number of sentences, you must already express a complete and clear thought of an essay that is worth reading.
