गरीबी एक ऐसी स्थिति है जिसमें लोग जीवन की मूलभूत आवश्यकताओं जैसे कि भोजन, कपड़े और आश्रय की अपर्याप्तता से वंचित रह जाते हैं। भारत में अधिकांश लोग अपने दो समय के भोजन को ठीक से नहीं पा सकते हैं, सड़क के किनारे सोते हैं और गंदे और पुराने कपड़े पहनते हैं।

उन्हें उचित और स्वस्थ पोषण, दवाएं, और अन्य आवश्यक चीजें नहीं मिलती हैं। शहरी आबादी में वृद्धि के कारण शहरी भारत में गरीबी बढ़ रही है क्योंकि ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों के लोग रोजगार पाने या कुछ वित्तीय गतिविधि करने के लिए शहरों और कस्बों में पलायन करना पसंद करते हैं।

गरीबी उन्मूलन के उपाय:

इस ग्रह पर मानवता की भलाई के लिए गरीबी की समस्या को तत्काल आधार पर हल करना बहुत आवश्यक है। गरीबी की समस्या को हल करने में कुछ उपाय जो बड़ी भूमिका निभा सकते हैं वे हैं:

• किसानों को अच्छी कृषि के साथ-साथ उसे लाभकारी बनाने के लिए उचित और आवश्यक सुविधाएं मिलनी चाहिए।
• जो लोग अनपढ़ हैं, उन्हें जीवन की बेहतरी के लिए आवश्यक प्रशिक्षण दिया जाना चाहिए।
• बढ़ती जनसंख्या और इस प्रकार गरीबी की जांच के लिए लोगों द्वारा परिवार नियोजन का पालन किया जाना चाहिए।
• गरीबी को कम करने के लिए दुनिया भर में भ्रष्टाचार को समाप्त किया जाना चाहिए।
• प्रत्येक बच्चे को स्कूल जाना चाहिए और उचित शिक्षा लेनी चाहिए।
• रोजगार के ऐसे रास्ते होने चाहिए जहां सभी श्रेणियों के लोग एक साथ काम कर सकें।

निष्कर्ष:

गरीबी केवल एक व्यक्ति की समस्या नहीं है, बल्कि यह एक राष्ट्रीय समस्या है। इसे कुछ प्रभावी समाधानों को लागू करके तत्काल आधार पर हल किया जाना चाहिए। सरकार द्वारा गरीबी को कम करने के लिए कई तरह के कदम उठाए गए हैं लेकिन कोई स्पष्ट परिणाम नहीं दिख रहे हैं।

लोगों, अर्थव्यवस्था, समाज और देश के सतत और समावेशी विकास के लिए गरीबी का उन्मूलन आवश्यक है। गरीबी का उन्मूलन प्रत्येक और हर व्यक्ति के एकजुट प्रयास से प्रभावी ढंग से किया जा सकता है।

प्रस्तावना : गरीबी एक ऐसी दर्दनाक स्थिति है जहाँ मनुष्य हर चीज़ के लिए बेबस और लाचार होता है।  वह संसार की तीन ज़रूरी चीज़ो को पाने में असमर्थ है।  वह है खाना , वस्त्र और मकान। पूरा दिन मज़दूरी करने के बाद भी भरपेट  खाना उन्हें नहीं मिलता है। तेज़ धूप और तेज़ बारिश से बचने के लिए उनके पास एक छत नहीं होती है। सर्दी के दिनों में उन्हें तन ढकने   के लिए कपड़े तक नसीब नहीं होते है। गरीबो का परिवार  अपने बच्चो को शिक्षा नहीं दिलवा पाता है।  शिक्षा  की कमी  के कारण उनका  मानसिक  विकास नहीं होता है। उनके सोचने समझने की कोई शक्ति नहीं होती है।  पर्याप्त भोजन ना मिलने के कारण उनका शारीरिक विकास नहीं हो पाता है।

हर रोज बढ़ती हुयी देश की जनसंख्या “गरीबी” बढ़ाने का प्रमुख कारण है।  सरकार के पास इतनी योजनाएं नहीं है कि वह देश के सभी लोगो को मकान , खाना और शिक्षा जैसी चीज़ें प्रदान कर सके ।  जितनी जनसंख्या अधिक होगी , सभी प्रकार की सुविधाओं  और संसाधनों में कमी आएगी। जनसंख्या वृद्धि की वजह से  जो लोग  गरीब या उससे भी निचले स्तर पर जी रहे है , उनके लिए   ज़िन्दगी नरक से कम नहीं होती है ।

देश में बेरोजगारी इतनी बढ़ गयी है कि बहुत लोगो के पास करने के लिए एक नौकरी तक नहीं है।  अगर देश में लोग इतने अधिक होंगे तो जाहिर तौर पर सभी  को नौकरी मिलना मुश्किल है। छोटी  नौकरी भी आजकल विलुप्त हो रहे है। बेरोजगारी गरीबी को अधिक बढ़ा रही है। जब प्राकृतिक आपदाएं आती है तो सबसे अधिक गरीब लोग प्रभावित होते है। गरीबो को बचाने वाला  कोई नहीं होता है।  कुछ लोग है जो गरीबो की  स्थिति में सुधार लाने के लिए उन्हें NGO के माध्यम से मदद करते है।  कुछ जगहों पर गरीब बच्चो के लिए निशुल्क शिक्षा दी जा रही है।  यह सभी गरीबो को प्राप्त नहीं हो पा  रहा है।  गरीबी की रेखा से नीचे जीने वाले लोगो की हालत और अधिक दयनीय है।

सरकार गरीबी को मिटाने की पूरी कोशिश कर रही है , मगर अभी भी बहुत कुछ करना बाकी है।  गरीबी देश की उन्नति में बहुत बड़ी बाधा है। गरीबी को मिटाने में कोई भी लोकप्रिय सरकार सफल नहीं हो पायी है। सरकार ने बच्चो को मुफ्त शिक्षा , गैस की सुविधा इत्यादि कार्य करने का प्रयास किया है।  लेकिन अभी भी हज़ारो चीज़ें करनी बाकी है।

गरीब  बच्चे अक्सर संपन्न घरो के बच्चो को विद्यालय जाते हुए देखते है। उन्हें खेल कूद  करते हुए देखते है।  मगर दुर्भाग्यवश उनकी जिन्दगी ऐसी नहीं होती है। गरीबी और पैसे की कमी गरीब परिवार को हर बुनियादी आवश्यकताओं से उन्हें दूर रखती है। अच्छे स्कूल में पढ़ना गरीब बच्चो के लिए एक सपना बनकर रह जाता है। गरीब लोग को दो वक़्त की रोटी मिलना भी टेढ़ खीर बन जाती है। गरीब परिवार अपने बच्चो को पुस्तकें और खिलोने खरीद कर देने में असमर्थ  है। अच्छा संतुलित और पौष्टिक भोजन परिवार और बच्चो को नहीं मिल पाता है।  ऐसे में उनका मानसिक और शारीरिक विकास नहीं हो पाता है। गरीब परिवार बिना सोचे समझे कई बच्चो को जन्म देते है और अपनी कठिनाईयां भी खुद बढ़ा लेते है। ऐसे में घर पर थोड़ी बहुत कमाई के लिए अपने बच्चो को बचपन से काम पर लगा देते है।  अक्सर चाय की दुकानों और उद्योगों में छोटे बच्चो से काम करवाया जाता है।  इससे बाल मज़दूरी जैसी समस्याएं उतपन्न होती है , जो कानूनन जुर्म है।

देश में गरीबी बड़ी आम सी हो गयी है।  सड़को के आस पास छोटे छोटे झोपड़ियों में जैसे तैसे गुजारा करने को विवश है। देश की आबादी का बहुत बड़ा हिस्सा बिना कपडे , रोटी और मकान के गुजारा करने को बेबस है। उनकी दयनीय हालत उनके आँखों से झलकती है।  कोई भी उन्हें इज़्ज़त नहीं देता है और हर जगह उन्हें तिरस्कृत किया जाता है। यह देश की विडंबना है एक और इतने अमीर लोग है और एक तरफ गरीब लोग जिसके पास खाने के लिए सिर्फ सूखी रोटी है।

गरीबी के दिन कोई भी मनुष्य झेलना नहीं चाहता है।  गरीब व्यक्ति  पैसे के अभाव में जीवन के मूल्य साधन जैसे भोजन और मकान जैसी आवश्यक सुविधाएं कभी भी प्राप्त नहीं कर पाता है। दिन रात मेहनत करने पर कुछ पैसे मिलते है , मगर वह भी पर्याप्त नहीं होता है। गरीब परिवार के बच्चे बाकी बच्चो की तरह एक  अच्छा   जीवन जीने में असमर्थ है।

गरीबी का प्रमुख कारण है देश में व्याप्त भ्रष्टाचार और अशिक्षा है।  भ्रष्टाचारी  नेताएं वोट पाने के लिए कई झूठे वादे करते है और गरीबो को उनका हक़ कभी नहीं दिलाते है।  उनके उत्थान के लिए कई योजनाएं बनाई जाती है।  मगर उनमे से कई योजनाएं सिर्फ कहने के लिए  रह जाती है। गरीब लोग पशुओं की भाँती सड़क किनारे पाए जाते है। सही पोषण और भोजन ना मिलने के लिए के कारण उनकी मानसिक हालत भी स्वस्थ नहीं रहती है। अमीर लोगो के पास इतना पैसा होता है और गरीबो के पास खाने के लिए एक रोटी तक नहीं।  ऐसी असमानता के कारण देश उन्नति कभी नहीं कर पायेगा।

गरीबी को मिटाने  के लिए किसानो को अच्छी सुविधाएं दी जानी चाहिए ताकि वे कृषि क्षेत्र में उन्नति कर सके । भारत एक कृषि प्रधान देश है , फिर भी किसान कृषि छोड़कर शहरों में तरफ पलायन करते है।  शहरों में आकर उनकी हालत और अधिक खराब हो जाती है। वह जैसे तैसे अपना गुजारा करते है। शहरों में भी गरीबी बढ़ रही है। गरीबो को निशुल्क शिक्षा और प्रशिक्षण दी जानी चाहिए ताकि उन्हें रोजगार के अवसर मिले। गरीबी को कम करने के लिए परिवार को परिवार नियोजन के बारें जागरूक करना अनिवार्य है।  जितने परिवारों  में सदस्य कम होंगे , गरीब लोगो को दिक्कतें कम होगी। इससे देश की बढ़ती हुयी आबादी को रोका जा सकता है।

देश में एक नियम का लागू होना ज़रूरी है। वह है सभी बच्चो को शिक्षा का अधिकार मिलना। गरीबो के बच्चो को भी पढ़ने का उतना ही अधिकार मिलना चाहिए जितना सभी को मिलता है । जनसंख्या  कम होगी तो रोजगार के मौके भी लोगो को अधिक मिलेंगे और देश में सदियों से चल रही गरीबी का उन्मूलन हम कर सकेंगे।

गरीबी एक  राष्ट्रिय समस्या है। गरीबी के निवारण के लिए सरकार को और अधिक प्रभावी तरीका अपनाना होगा। सरकार ने गरीबी मिटाने के लिए बहुत सारे प्रयत्न किये मगर कोई ख़ास नतीजा नहीं निकला है। देश में व्याप्त ख़राब अर्थव्यवस्था , भ्रष्टाचार  और शिक्षा की कमी जैसे मुद्दों को समय रहते मिटाना ज़रूरी है , तभी गरीब लोगो के आंसू हम  पोंछ पाएंगे और उनकी लाचारी मिटा पाएंगे। ऐसे सकारात्मक कोशिशें करनी होगी कि गरीबो को  भी आम आदमी जितने अवसर , मूल वस्तुएं और समाज में इज़्ज़त प्राप्त हो।

ग़रीबी एक ऐसी दयनीय स्थिति है, जिसमे व्यक्ति निर्धनता के बेहद सकरे रास्ते पर अपनी जीवन की गाड़ी को चलाता है। एक गरीब इंसान को अपनी अनेक इच्छाओं व सपनों का निर्धनता के कारण त्याग करना पड़ता है। समाज में, गरीब वर्ग के व्यक्तियों को प्रत्येक क्षेत्र में कड़ी मुश्किलों का सामना करना पड़ता है। चूंकि आज हर क्षेत्र में धन को महत्व दिया जाता है इसीलिए एक गरीब व्यक्ति प्रतिभाशाली होते हुए भी पीछे रह जाता है।

गरीब इंसान की जीवन शैली –

एक गरीब व्यक्ति व अमीर व्यक्ति की जीवनशैली में आकाश पाताल का फर्क होता है। एक ओर जहां अमीर व्यक्ति विलासिता पूर्ण जीवन जीता है वहीं दूसरी ओर एक गरीब व्यक्ति अपनी जरूरतों को भी पूर्ण नहीं कर पाता। अपर्याप्त भोजन, कपड़ा, छत से मजबूर एक गरीब व्यक्ति दिनभर इन्हीं की पूर्ति में प्रयासरत रहता है। धन की आपूर्ति के कारण गरीब बच्चों को शिक्षा का अवसर मिलना भी अत्यंत कठिन हो जाता है। इसी कारण गांव में रहने वाले हजारों गरीब परिवार अशिक्षित ही रह जाते है।

आज के दौर में हर व्यक्ति गरीबी रेखा को पार करके अमीर बनना चाहता है। क्योंकि आज की धन प्रधान इस दुनिया में गरीबी इंसान का जीवन दुखमय बना देती है। भारत में बढ़ती जनसंख्या को गरीबी का विशेष कारण बताया है। जनसंख्या वृद्धि के कारण नौकरियां मिल पाना मुश्किल हो गया है। पूंजीवादी अर्थव्यवस्था के चलते देश के गरीबी रेखा के लोगों को गरीबी से उभरने का अवसर ही नही मिल पाता है। गरीब मजदूर, नौकर, रिक्शा चालक आदि अशिक्षा होने के कारण ना तो अपनी कोई प्रगति कर पाते है, ना ही अपने बच्चों को शिक्षा के प्रति अग्रसर कर पाते। क्योंकि गरीबी की एक अत्यंत गरीबी स्थिति में घर का छोटा बालक आर्थिक सहायता देने हेतु मजदूरी या अन्य कामों में लग जाता है। इसके साथ ही प्राकृतिक आपदाएं व महामारी भी व्यक्ति के आर्थिक जीवन स्तर को बर्बाद कर देती है। गरीब बस्ती के निवासी, जो दिन भर जो कमाते उसी से रात में दो वक्त की रोटी खा पाते है। ऐसे में आपदाएं व महामारी उनके जीवन में अभिशाप बनकर दस्तक देती है।

गरीब इंसान की स्थिति –

गरीबी जीवन की एक ऐसी स्थिति है जिससे कोई भी गुजरना नहीं चाहता। गरीबी उसे कहते है जिसमें व्यक्ति अपनी मूलभूत आवश्यकताओं – रोटी, कपड़ा, मकान को पूरा करने में असमर्थ होता है। इन मूलभूत आवश्यकताओं की आपूर्ति व्यक्ति के जीवन को गरीबी के बेहद भयावह मंजर पर ले आती हैं। जहां वह मानसिक रूप से तथ शारीरिक रूप से कमजोर हो जाता है। परंतु वह हर संभव प्रयास करता है, जिससे कि वह अपने जीवन को सुचारू रूप से व्यतीत कर सके। गरीबी इंसान में ईर्ष्या, चोरी- डकैती, आत्मविश्वास में कमी इत्यादि कुछ अवगुणों को भी जन्म दे देती हैं। जिससे गरीबी केवल एक वर्ग के लिए ही नहीं अपितु राष्ट्रीय चिंता का कारण बन जाती है।

वर्तमान में सरकार द्वारा गरीबी रेखा से नीचे आने वाले व्यक्तियों के लिए कई योजनाओं को शुरू किया है, जो काफी हद तक सफल हुआ। परंतु फिर भी देश में बहुत से ऐसे गांव अभी मौजूद है जहां इन सेवाओं के विषय में गरीब व्यक्तियों को कोई ज्ञान नहीं है। इसी कारण देश में गरीबी को समाप्त करने के लिए और अधिक प्रयासरत होने की जरूरत है।

गरीबी पर निबंध

गरीब वह लोग होते है जो जीवन के आधारभूत जरुरतों से महरुम रहते हैं जैसे अपर्याप्त भोजन, कपड़े और छत। आज भारत एक विश्व शक्ति के रूप में उभर के आगे आ रहा है पर हमारे देश में अभी भी बहुत सरे लोग ऐसे है जिनको दो वक़्त की रोटी नही हासिल होती। यह लोग गंदे कपड़े पहनते हैं और रात को सड़क किनारे सोते हैं। यह स्वस्थ पोषण, दवा और दूसरी जरुरी चीजें से कोसो दूर है। ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों से लोग शहरों की ओर नौकरी और धन संबंधी क्रियाओं के लिये रुख कर रहे है। शहरी जनसंख्या में बढ़ौतरी के कारण और ग्रामीण लोगो की बढ़ती संख्या के कारण शहरों में गरीबी और बढ़ती ही जा रही है। आंकड़ों की बात करे तो लगभग 8 करोड़ लोगों की आय गरीबी रेखा से नीचे है और लगभग 4.5 करोड़ शहरी लोग सीमारेखा पर हैं। सरकार द्वारा उठाये गए कदमों के बावजूद गरीबी दर में कोई भी संतोषजनक परिणाम नहीं दिखाई देता है।

भ्रष्टाचार, बेरोज़गारी, अशिक्षा, पुरानी प्रथाएं, बढ़ती जनसंख्या, कमजोर कृषि, अमीर और गरीब के बीच में बड़ी खाई आदि ऐसे बहुत सारे भारत में गरीबी का मुख्य कारण है। भारत में जनसंख्या का एक बड़ा भाग कृषि पर निर्भर करता है जो कि गरीब है और गरीबी का कारण है। बढ़ती जनसंख्या बढ़ती गरीबी का प्रमुख कारण है क्योकि अधिक जनसंख्या मतलब अधिक भोजन, पैसा और घर की जरुरत। गरीब और ज्यादा गरीब होता जा रहा है और अमीर पहले से ज्यादा अमीर होता जा रहा है जिसने दोनों के बीच की खाई को बहुत चौड़ा कर दिया है। ये अंतर ही किसी देश को अविकसित की श्रेणी की ओर ले जाता है।

गरीबी गरीब लोगो पर बहुत हावी होती जा रही है जैसे अशिक्षा, बाल श्रम, खराब घर, बेरोजगारी अदि क्योकि गरीबी इन समस्याओ को भी जन्म देती है। इन्ही कारणों से गरीब परिवार का गरीब बच्चा अपनी छोटी सी आयु से ही कम मजदूरी पर काम करने को मजबूर है। यह उम्र उनके स्कूल जाने की खेलने कूदने की है किन्तु गरीबी ने इन बच्चो का बचपन उनसे छीन लिया है।

गरीबी पूरे देश की एक बहुत बड़ी समस्या है जिसे प्रभावी तरीकों को लागू करके जल्दी से जल्दी सुलझाना चाहिये। भारत सरकार द्वारा भी कई प्रकार के कदम उठाये गये, जिनका कोई स्पष्ट परिणाम नहीं दिखा। गरीबी हो हराने के लिए सरकार के साथ साथ भारत के नागरिको को भी एक-जुट हो कर ही इस समस्या का समाधान निकलना होगा। तो चलो आईये, हम सब मिलकर एक साथ इस समस्या को जड़ से उखाड़ दे जिससे हम और हमारा देश आगे बढ़ सके।

This has further caused the problem in the Indian economy. Poverty not only affects a single individual, their family , or their community, but it overall affects the economy of the country. 

Overall, the Indian economy depends on the output produced, and poverty decreases efficiency in such cases.

Poverty is the condition of being extremely poor for a human being. In this condition, the individual starts to lack the basic important things in their life: a roof over their heads, necessary food, medicine, clothes, etc., to continue their life. Several reasons for the cause of poverty are possible. 

Poverty in India comprises low income and the inability of an individual to acquire the basic goods and services necessary for his survival with dignity. It also encompasses the low levels of health and education .

India has a large population that is below the poverty line. That’s the reason that makes it a poor country. Even after 74 years of independence, we are still struggling , and poverty has plagued our nation. The poverty level in India is very high, and it affects the development of the country. 

Central and state governments have successfully collaborated with many of the private and public sector organisations to deal with this situation. Their main agenda is to eradicate poverty in India completely. 

Together, they have been able to roll out some successful schemes to eradicate this major problem to a certain extent and keep their citizens satisfied. 

They are trying their best to provide every individual with basic requirements. This task has not helped remove poverty in India. This is India’s worst situation ever, and it can’t be solved by judging it by its face value.

But over time, the invaders plundered these resources, and the economic health of this country slowly started deteriorating.

Poverty in India bloomed in the British Raj during the 19th and 20th centuries. The expansion of industries and agricultural exports are increasing day by day. Farming was forced on most individuals who were not farmers by profession. 

Due to British exploitation, workers could not afford a proper meal for the day. By 1943, poverty had reached such a stage that people were starting to die due to starvation. According to Sir Antony MacDonnell, people die like flies due to starvation. 

Effects of Poverty in India

Its effects are far-fetched. Overall health condition is merely affected due to this. Further, these people are even malnourished. Balanced and nutritio us diets are absent from much of the food children eat. 

As a result, their immune systems are merely affected, making them prone to several ailments. It makes them susceptible to anaemia, cardiac issues, poor vision, etc. 

A recent study reveals that nearly 40 out of every 1000 infants die within a year of age. A poverty-ridden society is more vulnerable to violence and crime. Poor people indulge themselves in criminal activities to feed themselves. 

Homelessness is a typical issue associated with poverty in India. This ultimately risks the safety of the woman, and it also promotes child labour in India . It also led to the development of terrorism . 

How to Reduce Poverty in India?

It’s not a problem that can be resolved in a week or a year. The eradication of poverty requires careful planning from the country’s government to implement some of the policies that cater to the population falling below the poverty line. 

Illiteracy and unemployment are the other two factors contributing to poverty in India. This issue can only be tackled with proper education and financial support. 

Access to education can promote higher education, and higher education can increase the employability of such individuals. In this way, poverty can be elevated as the individual starts earning. Education is the most effective way to combat poverty in India. 

Following features must be taken to eradicate poverty in India-

• GOI should invest in the poverty-stricken area.
• Increasing the employment opportunities in India.
• Skilled training must be provided to the illiterate labourers.
• Free education and health care should be provided.
• The public distribution system must be effective in its duties. People who are below the poverty line must be able to access free food and fresh water. 
• The growing population must be checked. Several schemes that promote birth control must be implemented. 
• Proper agricultural resources must be provided to farmers . In this way, their profit can also be increased. As a result, they will not migrate to the urban regions in search of food.

More than 1 billion people have escaped extreme poverty—so many, so fast, that the world might be able to declare, within a decade, the end of this most miserable form of deprivation. “The global poverty rate is now lower than it has ever been in recorded history,” Jim Yong Kim, a former president of the World Bank, recently argued . “This is one of the greatest human achievements of our time.”

Or perhaps not. In an acidic rebuke to world leaders, the outgoing United Nations special rapporteur on poverty and human rights, Philip Alston, argues that the effort to end global poverty has failed. More people live in deprivation now than two decades ago. “We squandered a decade in the fight against poverty, with misplaced triumphalism blocking the very reforms that could have prevented the worst impacts of the pandemic,” Alston wrote in his last report .

So who’s right: Alston or Kim? The pessimistic argument is a hard one to make when looking at the raw, headline numbers. The global extreme-poverty rate fell from 36 percent in 1990 to 10 percent in 2015; the number of poor people dropped from 2 billion to 700 million. But Alston believes that by focusing only on those numbers, the world is deluding itself.

The divisions between the World Bank’s economists and the UN’s special rapporteur are in some sense technical, about where to set the poverty line. They are in a more important sense interpretive, about whether progress has been fast or slow, and whether today’s global poverty counts are laudable or tragic.

This is a realm of yes-and s and no-but s, not direct refutations. Extreme poverty has declined rapidly, but the extreme-poverty line is very low: A person living below it spends no more than $1.90 a day, enough in many poor countries to cover some starch, a few fruits and vegetables, some cooking oil, a bit of protein, and that’s about it—with nothing left over for utilities, education, health care, transportation, or investment in wealth-generating assets, such as a cow or a motorbike. That poverty threshold represents “a staggeringly low standard of living, well below any reasonable conception of a life with dignity,” Alston argues—it is a catastrophic-destitution measure, not a poverty measure. He emphasizes the lack of progress made at the $3.20-a-day and $5.50-a-day poverty lines, too. Half the world lives on less than the latter figure.

Alston takes issue with the fact that the World Bank’s extreme-poverty line is an absolute measure, not a relative one: It sets a line and sees how many people cross it, country by country, rather than pegging the poverty threshold to median income, country by country. But “relative poverty is what really counts these days,” Alston told me, as it captures social exclusion, and the way that living on a few dollars a day is more challenging in middle-income countries like India and Kenya than in low-income countries like Afghanistan and Chad. “In a poorer country,” the bank itself explains , “participating in the job market may require only clothing and food, whereas someone in a richer society may also need access to the internet, transportation, and a cell phone.”

The bank also acknowledges that the global extreme-poverty line is low. It has generated a measure that includes relative poverty, and produces counts at the $3.20-a-day and $5.50-a-day lines. Its economists, researchers, and program experts stress that rising above the extreme-poverty line is no guarantee against malnutrition, stunted growth, early death, or any of the other horrible consequences of destitution.

But Alston’s most controversial, and most important, argument is that the focus on progress measured against the $1.90-a-day line—the prevalence of “everything’s getting better” arguments, made by Davos types like Bill Gates and Steven Pinker —has hampered progress toward true poverty eradication, and toward civil rights, social inclusion, and a basic standard of living for all. “By being able to rely so heavily on the World Bank's flagship figure, they can say, ‘Look, progress has been consistent. We’ve been doing great,’” Alston told me. “The implication of that is that the triumph of neoliberalism has brought with it very significant benefits for poor people. In reality, that’s just not the case.”

What if world leaders and multilateral institutions focused on the $5.50 line, or measures of poverty that capture social exclusion and relative deprivation? What if the headline story were that half the world still qualifies as desperately poor, and poverty head counts remain stubbornly high in dozens of countries? What if the story were not that we are succeeding, but that we are failing?

That story would not capture all the good that has happened in terms of infant-mortality rates falling, school-enrollment numbers rising, and malnutrition fading. But it would hold the world accountable for the fact that poverty is, always and everywhere, a choice. Alston’s view, and a necessary one, is that the world cannot wait for economic expansion to lift people above the poverty line. It cannot count on trade compacts and infrastructure projects and the ticking of GDP growth rates from 2.3 to 3.2 percent to do it. It needs direct interventions by governments, as fast as possible, to eliminate inequality and build safety nets, even in the poorest places.

An economic bill of rights would give a job to everyone who wants one and who can work. It would also give an income to those who can’t work. Dr. King affirms his commitment to non-violence. He’s fully aware that tensions are high. He quotes a spiritual, writing “timing is winding up.” Even while the nation progresses, poverty is getting worse.

This essay was reprinted and abridged in The Guardian in an arrangement with The Heirs to the Estate of Martin Luther King. Jr. The most visible representative of the Civil Rights Movement beginning in 1955, Dr. King was assassinated in 1968. His essays and speeches remain timely.

“How Poverty Can Follow Children Into Adulthood” – Priyanka Boghani

This article is from 2017, but it’s more relevant than ever because it was written when 2012 was the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. That’s no longer the case. In 2012, around ¼ American children were in poverty. Five years later, children were still more likely than adults to be poor. This is especially true for children of colour. Consequences of poverty include anxiety, hunger, and homelessness. This essay also looks at the long-term consequences that come from growing up in poverty. A child can develop health problems that affect them in adulthood. Poverty can also harm a child’s brain development. Being aware of how poverty affects children and follows them into adulthood is essential as the world deals with the economic fallout from the pandemic.

“Climate apartheid”: World’s poor to suffer most from disasters” – Al Jazeera and news Agencies

The consequences of climate change are well-known to experts like Philip Alston, the special rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights. In 2019, he submitted a report to the UN Human Rights Council sounding the alarm on how climate change will devastate the poor. While the wealthy will be able to pay their way out of devastation, the poor will not. This will end up creating a “climate apartheid.” Alston states that if climate change isn’t addressed, it will undo the last five decades of progress in poverty education, as well as global health and development .

“Nickel and Dimed: On (not) getting by in America” – Barbara Ehrenreich

In this excerpt from her book Nickel and Dimed, Ehrenreich describes her experience choosing to live undercover as an “unskilled worker” in the US. She wanted to investigate the impact the 1996 welfare reform act had on the working poor. Released in 2001, the events take place between the spring of 1998 and the summer of 2000. Ehrenreich decided to live in a town close to her “real life” and finds a place to live and a job. She has her eyes opened to the challenges and “special costs” of being poor. In 2019, The Guardian ranked the book 13th on their list of 100 best books of the 21st century.

Barbara Ehrenreich is the author of 21 books and an activist. She’s worked as an award-winning columnist and essayist.

Poverty is defined as a condition wherein people of a family are underfed and cannot meet the basic necessities of life such as food, shelter and clothing. This further leads to malnutrition, unemployment and lack of education. Obviously, a person who has nothing to eat and wear, cannot afford education and thus remains unemployed. According to a great personality namely, Nelson Mandela-poverty is not natural rather it is man-made. And this statement is completely true as we can count various causes of it but the most fundamental cause is overpopulation. Increasing population is placing a burden on the country’s economy and the resources are getting depleted day by day. Obviously, it is not possible for the government to provide food, shelter, and education to such a large number of population. However, they are still making efforts to help the people in need.

However, the lack of employment is the reason why most of the people in the world are not able to fulfil the basic needs of life. Government is making several efforts to reduce poverty and create balance in everyone’s life. Poverty and inequality are two matters at all times influencing one another. Undoubtedly, where there is poverty there is also inequality happening on a social level.  These two terms, applied when discussing society in its entirety, are utilized to describe how inequality on an economical level affects social statuses, making room for let us say lucky groups, the ones able to afford almost anything and the unlucky, those who can barely make it from one day to another. Thereof, these two terms describe the cause and effect of the economic system, however complex it might be.

The main actors included in this process are, actually, the people living in the society and, also, the system at work in the society, by means of which people can or cannot get advantage insofar as to make their lives better. The actors included in the inequality process are, therefore, people on the one hand and, on the other hand, the economic system active in a particular society. This is exactly why the matter could not be discussed generally, but applied to each country in part.

The main focus of each scholar is that of identifying the most efficient strategies by means of each poverty to be avoided and inequality disposed of. However, given the complexity of the problem and the variety of variables which influence it, my standpoint is that no general strategy can be found, no strategy which, if applied anywhere, could solve such a sensitive matter. More precisely, distinct solutions should be sought and applied, afterwards, in each country in part.  I do not ignore the fact that relevant insights could be derived from one country which could aid solve the problem in another country, but that is not, under no circumstance, enough. In other words, global citizenship philosophy should be understood as the point of departure for the struggle of highlighting the efficient solutions towards eliminating inequality in societies.

Thereof, the main question I wish to bring to debate is that of identifying whether it would be more relevant that a united team of researchers would study a corpus of distinct societies in order to put together a strategy which would help eliminate inequality or that the same team of researchers would study the same country and its society, irrespective of the other insights derived from distinct societies, with the same scope. This question parts from the discussions in ”Globalization. A very short introduction”, by Manferd B. Steger. This made me realize that such a scope implies a numerous of variables to be taken into consideration and, however, contextualization, especially at a time in which globalization is rapidly escalating.

Probably, the most important aspect of such a research consists of the capabilities of the specialists of identifying the exact characteristics of each society in part which would affect, in any way, the rise of inequality. The presupposition stands clear. Each society has characteristics that influence the economic process, some of which are the great historical moments it went through, the collective mentality, the political system, the social intake of the differences between people, from the ways in which one can go from one social status to another until the way in which women are being viewed in comparison to men. Thereof, the question I propose stands relevant from the point of view that the strategy which, for example, would be applicable in a society in which women are expected to be paid far less than men occupying the very same positions would not be efficient in a society in which women are already highly emancipated and are not expected to be stay-at-home mothers for a long period of time.

Many Patients Don’t Survive End-Stage Poverty

He has an easy smile, blue eyes and a life-threatening bone infection in one arm. Grateful for treatment, he jokes with the medical intern each morning. A friend, a fellow doctor, is supervising the man’s care. We both work as internists at a public hospital in the medical safety net , a loose term for institutions that disproportionately serve patients on Medicaid or without insurance. You could describe the safety net in another way, too, as a place that holds up a mirror to our nation.

What is reflected can be difficult to face. It’s this: After learning that antibiotics aren’t eradicating his infection and amputation is the only chance for cure, the man withdraws, says barely a word to the intern. When she asks what he’s thinking, his reply is so tentative that she has to prompt him to repeat himself. Now with a clear voice, he tells her that if his arm must be amputated, he doesn’t want to live. She doesn’t understand what it’s like to survive on the streets, he continues. With a disability, he’ll be a target — robbed, assaulted. He’d rather die, unless, he says later, someone can find him a permanent apartment. In that case, he’ll proceed with the amputation.

The psychiatrists evaluate him. He’s not suicidal. His reasoning is logical. The social workers search for rooms, but in San Francisco far more people need long-term rehousing than the available units can accommodate. That the medical care the patient is receiving exceeds the cost of a year’s rent makes no practical difference. Eventually, the palliative care doctors see him. He transitions to hospice and dies.

A death certificate would say he died of sepsis from a bone infection, but my friend and I have a term for the illness that killed him: end-stage poverty. We needed to coin a phrase because so many of our patients die of the same thing.

Safety-net hospitals and clinics care for a population heavily skewed toward the poor, recent immigrants and people of color. The budgets of these places are forever tight . And anyone who works in them could tell you that illness in our patients isn’t just a biological phenomenon. It’s the manifestation of social inequality in people’s bodies.

Neglecting this fact can make otherwise meticulous care fail. That’s why, on one busy night, a medical student on my team is scouring websites and LinkedIn. She’s not shirking her duties. In fact, she’s one of the best students I’ve ever taught.

This week she’s caring for a retired low-wage worker with strokes and likely early dementia who was found sleeping in the street. He abandoned his rent-controlled apartment when electrolyte and kidney problems triggered a period of severe confusion that has since been resolved. Now, with little savings, he has nowhere to go. A respite center can receive patients like him when it has vacancies. The alternative is a shelter bed. He’s nearly 90 years old.

Medical textbooks usually don’t discuss fixing your patient’s housing. They seldom include making sure your patient has enough food and some way to get to a clinic. But textbooks miss what my med students don’t: that people die for lack of these basics.

People struggle to keep wounds clean. Their medications get stolen. They sicken from poor diet, undervaccination and repeated psychological trauma. Forced to focus on short-term survival and often lacking cellphones, they miss appointments for everything from Pap smears to chemotherapy. They fall ill in myriad ways — and fall through the cracks in just as many.

Early in his hospitalization, our retired patient mentions a daughter, from whom he’s been estranged for years. He doesn’t know any contact details, just her name. It’s a long shot, but we wonder if she can take him in.

The med student has one mission: find her.

I love reading about medical advances. I’m blown away that with a brain implant, a person who’s paralyzed can move a robotic arm and that surgeons recently transplanted a genetically modified pig kidney into a man on dialysis. This is the best of American innovation and cause for celebration. But breakthroughs like these won’t fix the fact that despite spending the highest percentage of its G.D.P. on health care among O.E.C.D. nations, the United States has a life expectancy years lower than comparable nations—the U.K. and Canada— and a rate of preventable death far higher .

The solution to that problem is messy, incremental, protean and inglorious. It requires massive investment in housing, addiction treatment, free and low-barrier health care and social services. It calls for just as much innovation in the social realm as in the biomedical, for acknowledgment that inequities — based on race, class, primary language and other categories — mediate how disease becomes embodied. If health care is interpreted in the truest sense of caring for people’s health, it must be a practice that extends well beyond the boundaries of hospitals and clinics.

Meanwhile, on the ground, we make do. Though the social workers are excellent and try valiantly, there are too few of them , both in my hospital and throughout a country that devalues and underfunds their profession. And so the medical student spends hours helping the family of a newly arrived Filipino immigrant navigate the health insurance system. Without her efforts, he wouldn’t get treatment for acute hepatitis C. Another patient, who is in her 20s, can’t afford rent after losing her job because of repeated hospitalizations for pancreatitis — but she can’t get the pancreatic operation she needs without a home in which to recuperate. I phone an eviction defense lawyer friend; the young woman eventually gets surgery.

Sorting out housing and insurance isn’t the best use of my skill set or that of the medical students and residents, but our efforts can be rewarding. The internet turned up the work email of the daughter of the retired man. Her house was a little cramped with his grandchildren, she said, but she would make room. The medical student came in beaming.

In these cases we succeeded; in many others we don’t. Safety-net hospitals can feel like the rapids foreshadowing a waterfall, the final common destination to which people facing inequities are swept by forces beyond their control. We try our hardest to fish them out, but sometimes we can’t do much more than toss them a life jacket or maybe a barrel and hope for the best.

I used to teach residents about the principles of internal medicine — sodium disturbances, delirium management, antibiotics. I still do, but these days I also teach about other topics — tapping community resources, thinking creatively about barriers and troubleshooting how our patients can continue to get better after leaving the supports of the hospital.

When we debrief, residents tell me how much they struggle with the moral dissonance of working in a system in which the best medicine they can provide often falls short. They’re right about how much it hurts, so I don’t know exactly what to say to them. Perhaps I never will.
