research elements journals

The set of journals have been ranked according to their SJR and divided into four equal groups, four quartiles. Q1 (green) comprises the quarter of the journals with the highest values, Q2 (yellow) the second highest values, Q3 (orange) the third highest values and Q4 (red) the lowest values.

The SJR is a size-independent prestige indicator that ranks journals by their 'average prestige per article'. It is based on the idea that 'all citations are not created equal'. SJR is a measure of scientific influence of journals that accounts for both the number of citations received by a journal and the importance or prestige of the journals where such citations come from It measures the scientific influence of the average article in a journal, it expresses how central to the global scientific discussion an average article of the journal is.

Evolution of the number of published documents. All types of documents are considered, including citable and non citable documents.

This indicator counts the number of citations received by documents from a journal and divides them by the total number of documents published in that journal. The chart shows the evolution of the average number of times documents published in a journal in the past two, three and four years have been cited in the current year. The two years line is equivalent to journal impact factor ™ (Thomson Reuters) metric.

Evolution of the total number of citations and journal's self-citations received by a journal's published documents during the three previous years. Journal Self-citation is defined as the number of citation from a journal citing article to articles published by the same journal.

Evolution of the number of total citation per document and external citation per document (i.e. journal self-citations removed) received by a journal's published documents during the three previous years. External citations are calculated by subtracting the number of self-citations from the total number of citations received by the journal’s documents.

International Collaboration accounts for the articles that have been produced by researchers from several countries. The chart shows the ratio of a journal's documents signed by researchers from more than one country; that is including more than one country address.

Not every article in a journal is considered primary research and therefore "citable", this chart shows the ratio of a journal's articles including substantial research (research articles, conference papers and reviews) in three year windows vs. those documents other than research articles, reviews and conference papers.

Ratio of a journal's items, grouped in three years windows, that have been cited at least once vs. those not cited during the following year.

Elements of a Scholarly Article

How to read a scholarly article.

  • Research Help

Scholarly journal articles generally follow a specific structure:

Title:  The title is a succinct description of the purpose of the article.

Abstract: The abstract provides a short, concise summary of the article, stating its purpose and its findings. Read the abstract first to determine if the article is related to your research question or general area of research.

Introduction:   Why was this research conducted? Who else has conducted research on this topic? The problem or research question is introduced in this section. The introduction often includes a literature review, which will tell you what is already written or known about the problem. Sometimes the literature review may be in its own section.

Methodology/Materials and Methods :  How was the research conducted?  This section tells you what procedures were used to conduct the research. Methods is the most technical and complex section of the article, making it difficult to read. Suggestion: read everything else first, and then concentrate on this section on your second reading of the article.

Results:  What were the findings from the study?  This section often includes graphs, charts, and statistics in addition to text.

Discussion or Conclusion: What do the results mean?  Here is where the results are explained in terms of their implications.  Suggestions for future research are discussed here as well.

References:  This section lists all the sources used by the authors when conducting their research.

A first-of-its kind lithium-metal battery recycling process may be on the horizon as SES AI will fund a two-year research initiative at Worcester Polytechnic Institute to develop the new technology.

SES AI, a li-metal battery manufacturer, is a global enterprise with headquarters in Boston, and operations in Singapore, Shanghai, and Seoul. Qichao Hu, founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of SES AI, reached out to WPI’s professor of mechanical and materials engineering, Yan Wang, to lead the research.

Wang’s research at WPI has helped develop materials recycling processes for the EV industry. In 2015, he and a group of cofounders created Ascend Elements , a Westborough-based firm, which has based billions to build EV battery recycling facilities in Kentucky, Poland, and Germany.

“Eventually, my goal is to help the industry,” said Wang. “To lower carbon dioxide emissions, lower the cost … that’s one of my passions as a researcher, as a professor.”

Neither SES AI nor WPI disclosed the amount of funding.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with WPI, Professor Wang, and his team of experts on this initiative to develop a critical new battery recycling technology that will allow SES AI to implement a more sustainable and efficient approach to battery manufacturing,” Hu said in an SES AI press release Friday.

Li-metal is a new technology yet to experience wide-scale commercialization, said Hu. Thus, there isn’t li-metal to be recycled yet, though a time when there needs to be that option is coming soon, he said.

“Because we’re the furthest ahead and because we produce more lithium metal batteries, the recycling of lithium metal becomes important,” Hu said in a phone interview with WBJ.

The impending heightened use of li-metal batteries is a motivating factor for developing a recycling process for Wang as well.

“One thing [that] convinced me to work on the topic is I truly believe that electrification of the industry, that means that there will be lots of parts powered by batteries,” Wang said in an interview with WBJ.

The importance of creating technology enabling li-metal battery recycling is twofold, said Hu. One reason to create the technology is cost. Li-metal is mined in areas such as South America and Australia, then shipped to areas of Asia to be refined before being sent to the United States to be used in production, which is a pricey process, he said.

Traceability is the other incentivizing factor. There’s a lack of transparency when buying fresh li-metal, with companies unable to track the processes used to mine, refine, and transport the product, said Hu.

“If you do recycling, then you have the full history,” he said. “You can trace all that. You know which battery the lithium was used in in its previous life and then where it's recycled, and then which new battery that recycled lithium actually goes into.”

Another benefit to developing recycling technology is cutting down on the environmental harm occurring throughout the transport of li-metal, said Wang. Transportation of li-metal around the globe releases CO₂, contributing to global warming.

Creating a recycling process will allow for the procedure to take place on-site, said Hu. This means that handlers will be able to take the li-metal out of the batteries and put it into new ones, accounting for traceability accuracy, eliminating costly transportation prices, and reducing CO₂ emissions.

WPI will use the majority of the funds provided by SES AI for hiring graduate and postdoctoral students to participate in creating the technology, Wang said. In addition, because li-metal is highly reactive, both Hu and Wang said a portion of the financing will go towards protective precautions to keep students safe.

Though the deployment of a recycling process will initially benefit companies making products that use li-metal batteries, such as electric cars, consumers will eventually reap the benefits as well, said Hu. He predicts lower manufacturing costs will translate to lower prices of consumer goods.

Berkeley Pit ‘a unique opportunity’ for rare earth elements

Becca Phillips | Tuesday, April 16, 2024

A Montana legislative committee unanimously voted Wednesday to petition the U.S. Congress to support efforts to pull rare earth elements from the Berkeley Pit in Butte.

Rare earth elements are used in a broad range of high-tech devices ranging from electric vehicles and computer hard drives to components of fighter jets, missiles and drones used by the Department of Defense .

Pulling these materials from the Berkeley Pit, a former open-pit copper mine, supports a “critical initiative that has the potential to address our nation’s dependence on foreign sources of rare earth elements,” the Environmental Quality Council wrote in its letter to Congress. The EQC wrote that it would also appreciate Congress’ support in evaluating the feasibility of recovering rare earth elements and critical minerals from other mines that are currently operational or long shuttered.

The EQC, which includes 12 state lawmakers and four members from the general public, voted to submit the letter during a brief virtual meeting chaired by Rep. Steve Gunderson, R-Libby.

The council’s letter comes a month after the Montana Mining Association and Montana Resources Inc. presented to the EQC the results of a study demonstrating the feasibility of retooling the Berkeley Pit’s water treatment operations to extract rare earth elements and critical minerals and five months after the DOD emphasized the importance of “resilient supply chains” in its “ National Defense Industrial Strategy .”

During EQC’s meeting on March 14, Montana Mining Association Executive Director Matt Vincent said Montana is well-positioned to “cash in on” a national push to establish a domestic supply of rare earth elements so the United States can be less reliant on foreign supplies. According to the DOD, the United States, like much of the world, is currently reliant on China for most of its supply of rare earth elements.

Mark Thompson with Montana Resources, which has operated the copper and molybdenum mine outside Butte for nearly four decades, told the EQC that researchers from the Montana Bureau of Mine and Geology and West Virginia University found significant quantities of zinc, manganese, yttrium, lanthanum and cerium in the Berkeley Pit’s water. Smaller percentages of high-grade rare earth elements that “really make the Department of Defense guys’ mouths water” were also detected, Thompson said.

“The rare earths are the sex appeal,” Thompson added, “but the zinc is what’s going to pay the bills.” Thompson said there are clear benefits to building a rare earth and critical element “concentrator” in the United States — ideally near the Berkeley Pit’s water treatment plant, which is capable of processing about 5,000 gallons of water per minute. Concentrators separate the desired components from less valuable minerals.

“DOD has told me personally that this is one of the most advanced, shovel-ready projects they have in the country right now,” Thompson said. “I think it can go somewhere.”

EQC wrote in its letter that while the Berkeley Pit “presents a unique opportunity” for the recovery of rare earth elements and critical materials, “similar opportunities to recover [rare earth elements] and critical materials are likely to exist at other abandoned mine sites, as well as at currently operating mine operations.”

Vincent said at the March 14 meeting the Zortman-Landusky gold mine has strong potential in this regard. That north-central Montana mine closed after its owners declared bankruptcy, but it still has an active water treatment operation to mitigate the effects of acid mine drainage.
