How to upgrade your seat on Hawaiian Airlines

Hawaiian Airlines Airbus A330 will be offering free Starlink internet access

A vacation to Hawaii can be the ultimate dream trip. Whether you choose Maui, Kauai or Waikiki, the beaches and mountains that await have the ability to take your breath away.

The remote location of Hawaii means you'll have a long flight to get to paradise regardless of where you start your journey. Hawaiian Airlines has been flying from Hawaii to destinations worldwide for over 80 years and offers a variety of ways to get to Hawaii with a bit more comfort.

Hawaiian Airlines has true lie-flat seats on some routes and offers seats with extra legroom in its economy class cabin. Hawaiian also offers a product similar to domestic U.S. first class on some intra-Hawaii flights.

As you can see, there are many upgraded seating options on Hawaiian Airlines flights. Here's what you need to know about getting an upgrade when flying Hawaiian Airlines.

Snag a free Hawaiian upgrade with elite status

If you hold elite status in the HawaiianMiles program , you may find yourself on the Hawaiian upgrade list. Pualani Gold and Platinum members have limited access to free upgrades to extra comfort, business-class and first-class seats.

For "neighbor island" flights or intra-island Hawaii flights, Pualani Gold and Platinum members get free upgrades to extra comfort seats (Hawaiian's premium economy product on its Airbus A330, A321neo and Boeing 717 aircraft) 24 hours before departure.

Pualani Platinum members also get free upgrades to first-class seats 24 hours before check in, while Pualani Gold members can purchase an upgrade for a 50% discount if available 24 hours before departure.

Hawaiian treats flights to the rest of North America and other international destinations differently. Pualani Gold and Platinum members get access to extra comfort seating at boarding. Pualani Platinum members earn certificates redeemable for upgrades to first and business class.

Each certificate is valid for an upgrade to first or business class on Hawaiian-operated flights of 3,500 miles or less. Still, members can redeem multiple certificates for flights longer than 3,500 miles.

Pualani Platinum members earn two certificates when they qualify for Platinum status each year, six additional certificates if they fly 75,000 miles in a calendar year and an additional certificate for every 10,000 miles flown beyond 75,000 in a year.

Pay for a Hawaiian upgrade

seat assignments on hawaiian airlines

Hawaiian Airlines employs a "Bid Up" system where eligible travelers can bid to upgrade to first or business class on a Hawaiian Airlines flight. Passengers traveling in main cabin basic — Hawaiian's version of basic economy — are ineligible for the Bid Up system.

Eligible passengers can enter their confirmation number into the Bid Up page on Hawaiian's website to make a bid. You can enter a different bid for each segment, but you'll need to bid for all passengers on your itinerary. If you're comfortable splitting up your party and only upgrading some travelers on your itinerary, you'll need separate reservations. Hawaiian Airlines will notify you between 48 and 24 hours before departure if you've been cleared off the Hawaiian upgrade list to a first or business class seat.

Meanwhile, if you want to secure an upgrade to extra comfort or preferred seats, you can pay to reserve these seats. The cost will be between $5 and $49 for "neighbor island" flights and between $9 and $399 for other flights.

The Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® doesn't offer any discounts or benefits related to Hawaiian upgrades. But you can still utilize many other credit card travel credits to cover upgrade fees.

For example, the Chase Sapphire Reserve offers a $300 annual travel credit , and The Platinum Card® from American Express offers an airline fee credit up to $200 per calendar year in statement credits (although you'd need to enroll and select Hawaiian Airlines as your airline of choice before making your purchase).

The information for the Hawaiian Airlines World Elite Mastercard has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Redeem miles for a Hawaiian upgrade

seat assignments on hawaiian airlines

HawaiianMiles members can also redeem miles for first or business class upgrades based on availability.

For "neighbor island" Hawaiian flights, the range of miles required to upgrade to first class is between 7,500 and 15,000. Meanwhile, the cost to upgrade Hawaiian flights to North America or other international destinations will range between 25,000 and 90,000 miles depending on the destination.

Pualani Platinum and Gold members, as well as HawaiianMiles credit card holders, may see discounted upgrade offers for certain flights in their accounts. Unfortunately, you can't redeem miles to upgrade to Hawaiian's preferred or extra comfort seats.

Bottom line

There are several ways to score an upgrade to Hawaiian first class. Intra-island flights are shorter, so upgrading may not be worth the price (in cash or miles). However, upgrading on longer flights may provide excellent value.

If you're a Hawaii resident or travel there frequently, elite status in the HawaiianMiles program may score you some free upgrades to Hawaiian first class or business class. And Hawaiian is one of the few airlines flying to and from the mainland U.S. that employs a bidding system for upgrades.

However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

Although the pandemic has hit travel to Hawaii hard, it’s just a matter of time until the Aloha State begins welcoming back travelers from around the world. In 2019, 10.4 million people visited the islands, many of them arriving via Hawaiian Airlines.

If you’re patiently waiting out the coronavirus for a well-earned escape to Hawaii, consider traveling there in comfort and style in Hawaiian Airlines’ aloha-spirit infused first class cabin.

The first-class seat

Hawaiian Airlines prides itself on its seats. In first class, you’ll get a full 180 degree lie-flat seat with all the perks.

Even on a short six-hour flight from a West Coast city like Los Angeles, you’ll still get one of these comfortable lie-flat seats in first class. This sets Hawaiian apart from many competitors that don’t offer fully lie-flat first class seats from the West Coast to Hawaii.

The lounges

seat assignments on hawaiian airlines

The Plumeria Lounge in Honolulu. (Photo by Sally French)

If you’re flying first class out of Hawaii to a destination in the U.S., you’ll get access to the Hawaiian Airlines Premier Club . Here you can get a nice respite with free Wi-Fi, drinks, snacks and a comfortable place to relax.

If you’re lucky enough to be flying first class out of Honolulu to an international destination, you’ll also get access to the Plumeria Lounge .

Not flying internationally, but still want to experience the luxury? You can snag a Plumeria Lounge pass at check-in for $40. It's also offered at a discount depending on your level of Hawaiian Airlines elite status .

Onboard amenities

If your flight is more than eight hours, you’ll get premium bedding for a good rest before landing. Plus, each seat also comes with two USB charging ports and an AC power port with universal connections so you won’t arrive with a drained battery.

And what’s a first class flight without first class food? Hawaiian airlines partners with local chefs to bring inspiration from the islands onto your flight. Currently, Hawaiian Airlines is partnering with Lee Ann Wong, executive chef and owner of the Koko Head Café in Honolulu. You might recognize her from her TV series or appearances on cooking shows.

Booking first class with cash

Depending on your dates, you can find first class seats from the West Coast starting around $1,250 round-trip. Considering the economy class ticket price, this might be an up-charge of just a few hundred dollars each way to travel in comfort and style from the West Coast. From East Coast cities, first class fares start just over $3,000.

Booking with miles

If you have a stash of Hawaiian Airlines miles, you can find first class seats from either coast for 40,000 miles each way, or you can spend 25,000 to upgrade from economy to first class. At times when flights are in high demand ("First Class 2"), a seat will cost you 80,000 from a western departure city or 130,000 from New York or Boston.

How to book

Hawaiian Airlines offers direct service to Hawaii from 13 U.S. cities.

Long Beach.

Los Angeles.

New York City.

Sacramento.

San Francisco.

Hawaiian Airlines has its own frequent flyer program, HawaiianMiles , which lets you earn miles toward travel several ways, including by flying and by using the Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® for everyday purchases. For JetBlue flyers, a partnership between the two airlines allows you to use your JetBlue TrueBlue points to fly to and from Hawaii. Frequent flyers of China Airlines, Japan Airlines, Korean Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Australia can also enjoy the benefits of these carriers’ partnerships with Hawaiian .

The number of HawaiianMiles you’ll need to travel first class to the islands depends on whether you’re boarding a Hawaiian flight from the western U.S. or from one of the airline’s two East Coast cities — New York (JFK) and Boston.

Convert Marriott Bonvoy points to HawaiianMiles

Hawaiian Airlines is a transfer partner of Marriott Bonvoy . Marriott points can be transferred for HawaiianMiles at a 3:1 ratio. Transfer 60,000 points and Marriott will add an extra 5,000 miles on for you. So 60,000 Marriott points will get you 25,000 HawaiianMiles — enough for a one-way upgrade to first class.

For travelers who don’t have many opportunities to earn HawaiianMiles, this is a good way to get the miles you need to fly.

Yes, Hawaiian Airlines offers a first class cabin, with lie-flat seats and other premium amenities. This cabin is offered as business class when flying internationally and first class when flying domestically.

The number of miles needed to upgrade to first class on Hawaiian Airlines depends on the length of your flight. These upgrades start at 7,500 miles for short flights between the islands and go up to 90,000 for a “saver” upgrade for long-haul international flights in business class.

First class flyers on Hawaiian Airlines receive lounge access when available, two free checked bags, priority boarding and complimentary premium food and beverages in flight.

Should you fly Hawaiian Airlines First Class?

In short, absolutely. The seats are some of the best flying to the islands, and the onboard experience helps you start your Hawaiian vacation off on the right foot. While paying $3,000 for a round trip from the East Coast may seem a bit high, there are plenty of options using miles and points to get there, making it that much sweeter.

Child Restraint Systems (Car Seats)

Your child’s safety is very important to us. That’s why we recommend purchasing a seat for children, under the age of two , as well as using an approved front-facing or rear-facing child restraint system in-flight.

All safety seats used in-flight must meet the following requirements:

Safety seats that do not have a label stating certification for use in aircraft, or seats manufactured before January 1, 1981, are not acceptable for use in-flight.

Child booster seats or other types of child restraints, regardless of stamp/seals of approval the devices carry, may not be used during take-off, landing and surface movements. For additional details on approved child restraint systems, visit Additional Notes .

Rear-facing Child Restraint System

Rear-facing child restraint systems will be allowed provide you've:

  • Purchased a seat for your child
  • Notify an aiport agent upon arrival at the airport that you'll be using a rear-facing child restraint system

Note: your child’s restraint system will not be counted as a carry-on item when a seat has been purchased for your child.

Traveling today and forgot to let us know in advance?

Don’t stress, just be sure to notify a Hawaiian Airlines airport customer service agent at check-in or at the gate prior to boarding. For more information regarding car seats as a carry-on baggage click here .

Will your Car Seat fit on our Aircraft?

In order to help our guests determine whether their CRS (Child Restraint System or car seat) fits properly on the aircraft in which they expect to travel, the following chart provides the width of the narrowest and widest passenger seats (in inches) for each of our aircraft.

While we will try our best to utilize the originally scheduled aircraft type for your journey, operational circumstances may result in an aircraft swap to an aircraft with different seat dimensions.

If you have further questions, please call Hawaiian Airlines Reservations .

Seat Dimensions

Seat dimensions represent the width of the distance from the inside of one armrest across the seat to the inside of the opposing armrest.

*Children using child restraint systems are not permitted to sit in the Exit row.

Seat Restrictions

For the safety of your child and all guests, Child Restraint Systems (CRS) are not permitted in the following seats and rows:

  • Aisle seats on the A321 and B717 aircraft
  • Aisle seats for the A330 and B787 aircraft are prohibited unless the child's traveling party occupies all seats in that row. EXAMPLE: A330: A CRS may be accepted in seat 23 C/G if the traveling party occupies the entire row 23, all seats CDEG. B787: A CRS may be accepted in seat 23 D/F if the traveling party occupies the entire row 23, all seats DEF.
  • Rows immediately in front of or behind an exit.
  • Row 4 on our B717 aircraft.
  • First/Business Class on the 787 aircraft.
  • Any seat that blocks aisle access from individuals, not in your traveling party.

This restriction is enforced to prevent the safety seat from impeding a possible aircraft evacuation.

Hawaiian Airlines reserves the right to change seating assignments in order to ensure compliance with federal regulations.

Additional Notes

Backless booster type seats, safety belts, belly belts, harness type and vest type devices are not allowed during taxiing, takeoff, and landing. Exception: CARES Harness.

Cares is designed specifically for aviation use for children ages 1 and older, who weigh between 22-44 pounds. Cares is approved by the FAA as an alternative to a car seat for aircraft transportation and may be used during all phases of flight.

The Art Of Choosing Seats On Flights To Hawaii

Choosing the best seats on a long flight to Hawaii can be an ordeal. That is if you pay a high enough fare and choose an airline that offers advance seat selection. It’s an important part of the airline ticketing process and choosing wisely can determine in part how much you enjoy your 5+ hour flight to Hawaii.

It is always great to travel with extra legroom or get upgraded using points or cash into premium economy or business class, but that isn’t always possible either due to affordability or availability. As we mentioned, premium seats to Hawaii are in far greater demand than ever before, and people stand ready to fork over the extra money in order to be comfortable. So the only option may be to select the best economy seats available, especially for such a long duration.

Airlines, including Hawaiian, are now charging extra for some regular economy seats.

Earlier this week we wrote Hawaiian Adds $19-23 Fee for Many Economy Seats . Airlines other than Southwest let you pick your seat. But there can be an extra charge for seat assignments, especially on the cheapest tickets and for those seats found near the front, plus aisle or window seats. But when the alternative is sitting in the middle, or not being seated together with your travel companions at all, that can be a real bummer when starting out on your Hawaii vacation.

Everyone has their own take on what’s best.

Seats that are in one class are the same as others, in terms of their physical dimensions. But in other ways, they may not be equal, as experienced travelers will definitely attest to.

One thing to decide on is whether you want an aisle seat or window seat, or whether, when two are traveling together, will one of you accept a middle seat? Also, make note of the distance from restrooms in terms of potential convenience as well as annoyance.

Do you prefer seating near the front of the plane?

We definitely both do. We like not seeing all the other people on the plane. It doesn’t really make sense, but somehow it feels less claustrophobic. Also, it’s great to be among the first to get off the plane on arrival in Hawaii. When you have a connection en route, sitting forward helps reduce the concern about a missed flight.

Will you be able to easily stow your carry-ons?

That’s a real concern. And it isn’t always easy to figure out since it involves both where you’re sitting and the airline’s boarding plan. Sometimes, too, overhead bins near bulkheads will be used by flight attendants. Generally, sitting near the back gives you more access to overhead storage, depending on when you board.

Two-across economy seating is becoming somewhat of a rarity.

Airlines flying to Hawaii have moved to more single-aisle, narrow-body aircraft for the majority of their flights. These are almost exclusive 3-across seating. Check when booking to see if some flights might still be on wide-body aircraft. Those are offered depending on route and flight by American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, and United Airlines. Both Alaska Airlines and Southwest Airlines only fly narrow-body aircraft to Hawaii.

Aisle and window seats are now monetized.

The airlines know that we hate middle seats and they are in the process of fully monetizing window and aisle seating whenever possible. Even on aircraft with two-abreast seating, airlines will try to charge extra for those sections to the degree they can.

This old trick no longer works.

In a plane with three-across seating, an old trick was to reserve in a row that was open, even better towards the rear, and then select window and aisle seats, leaving the middle seat open. When the plane was not full, that often provided an opportunity for two people to share three seats. But airlines filling nearly every seat, that is not likely to happen any longer.

But this old trick still does work.

When traveling with a companion and neither of you is willing to sit in a middle seat, many will opt to select adjacent aisle seats. We have done that ourselves. We had a comment on that practice from Ted, who said, “An annoying pattern I’ve noticed is that before when 2 people traveled they usually took aisle/middle or window/middle seats. What’s happening now is each person taking aisle seats across each other.”

And so does this one.

Check on your reservation frequently from the time of booking until your flights. In today’s rapidly changing travel world, your flight could have been changed, the aircraft type might not be the same, or other seats may have become available. Whatever may have happened, do check to be sure everything is as you expect.

How to check for the best seats on your flight to Hawaii.

Some seat locations simply are more comfortable than others. Depending on the aircraft, seats can include more or less legroom, and some seats in front of exit rows may not even recline. There are other issues too, such as fixed armrests between seats. Two websites that we use to check seating on all aircraft are Seat Guru and Seat Maestro. We like checking both to see if they yield the same results. You’ll enter the date and flight in most cases or may need to identify the specific aircraft type assigned for your flight. Both websites show you a depiction of the seat map, with indications of which seats are better and why, as well as which ones you should avoid. You can also check the seat width and the seat pitch using these websites, which is especially helpful if, like editor Rob, you happen to be 6′ 4″.

Choose your seats as soon as possible.

That gives you the best selection of seats to choose from. Ideally, that happens in the same process as purchasing flights. If that isn’t possible, and you have to obtain seats 24 hours before departure, set an alarm so you’re there at the exact moment you can check in and not one minute later.

Twenty-four hours before travel is also the ideal time to change seats if you had reserved ones that aren’t your favorite, or are hoping for an upgrade. When that doesn’t work either, the last choice is to arrive at the airport early to see what is possible.

What are your airline seat tips and tricks?

Well I am on a A430 neo and don’t think there is an avenue to choose a best seat. They are all small seats for a 6 foot woman, unless you can afford the big upgrades.

Yes, Airlines Do Have the Right to Change Your Seat Without Warning

Here's what to do when it happens.

When right-wing pundit Ann Coulter resorted to complaining on Twitter about having her seat moved on a 2017 Delta flight, she gave the world a golden example of how not to behave.

Perhaps she wasn’t fully aware of her rights — or the airline’s — but the tweetstorm that unfolded reminds us why it’s always important to know your rights as a passenger.

When you purchase an airline seat, you are required to acknowledge that you agree to the contract of carriage, a legally binding agreement between you and the airline, usually by checking a box next to the phrase “I agree to the terms and conditions of the contract of carriage” or some variation thereof.

Delta’s contract of carriage states : “Delta may substitute alternate Carriers or aircraft, change its schedules, delay or cancel flights, change seat assignments, and alter or omit stopping places shown on the ticket as required by its operations in Delta’s sole discretion.”

When you buy a plane ticket, the airline is only obligated to get you from point A to point B. Everything else that comes with it (reserved seating, overhead bin space, baggage allowance, and food and beverage service) is at the discretion of the airline. Because you’re not buying an actual seat — you’re purchasing transportation.

What to Do When an Airline Moves Your Seat

When you’re asked by a flight attendant or gate agent to change seats, it’s usually to help families sit together, allow caregivers to sit next to patients, or accommodate an air marshal or other airline employee. They also might ask you to move for safety reasons or to help redistribute the weight balance of the aircraft, especially on smaller planes.

If it happens to you, respond politely and graciously. Over the years, I’ve been asked countless times to move seats and have done so without complaining. Nearly every time, the flight attendant thanked me for my willingness to be flexible with free bottles of wine or a snack.

Your Boarding Pass Is Your Assigned Seat

If a gate agent comes onboard and hands you a new boarding pass, that is the seat you are required to sit in, regardless of how much you paid for your ticket or the class of service you purchased. The gate agent has supreme power of seating assignments for every flight and dictates who sits where. If they ask you to move, do it.

You May Be Entitled to a Refund

If you’re downgraded from a seat with extra legroom to a regular economy seat, the airline will reimburse you the difference. In Coulter’s case, Delta refunded her the $30 extra fee she paid for the Delta Comfort+ seat that was given to another passenger.

The contract of carriage for American Airlines , as another example, states that you can request a refund for a variety of reasons , including getting re-booked on a flight that causes you to miss a connection, or if you get moved from a preferred seat to a non-preferred seat or a preferred aisle/window seat to a preferred middle seat. Those “preferred” seats refer to the coveted seats near the front of the economy cabin or in emergency exit rows that typically cost extra.

If your seat gets moved and you feel you are owed a refund, contact the airline’s customer service department to request one.

What It's Like to Fly in the Leihōkū Suites, Hawaiian Airlines' New Business Class Cabin

Last week, Hawaiian Airlines held the inaugural flights aboard its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner plane, a moment six years in the making. The plane was named “Kapuahi” after a star that holds cultural and navigational significance to the Polynesian wayfinders, some of the first people to make this voyage across the Pacific.

The inaugural Dreamliner flights departed from Honolulu for San Francisco , then returned the next day. For the next month or so, Kapuahi will fly between the Bay Area and Hawaii's capital once a day before adding routes to Los Angeles and Phoenix . By the end of this year, the carrier is scheduled to add two more Dreamliners to its fleet.

I flew on Hawaiian's second Dreamliner flight from SFO to HNL and there was much to celebrate as passengers and employees ushered in the airline's new flagship aircraft; live Hawaiian music and hula welcomed us at the gate, and leis were handed out as we boarded. But it's what's inside the plane that will make the biggest difference for travelers, thanks to the completely redesigned cabins and brand-new business class product, the Leihōkū Suites.

Below, details of Hawaiian's new premium economy and business class products, as well as Apartment 1929, the airline's exclusive lounge you'll want to gain access to for one last taste of the islands before leaving paradise.

The outdoor section of Hawaiian Airlines new lounge Apartment 1929

In Apartment 1929, you can squeeze in a little more time outdoors before boarding your flight home.

The airport experience

For a hands-off, curb-to-airport-door experience , travelers can now purchase Hawaiian Airlines' new Premium Airport Service at the Honolulu airport. This service starts at $500 for two people; travelers can call or email the airline directly to book the service , which is not included in any ticket class.

For departures, this starts with a handler greeting you at the terminal or rental car facility. They will then carry your bags, expedite you through security (it's even faster than Clear or TSA PreCheck ), and escort you to Apartment 1929, the exclusive new lounge only available to Premium Airport Service customers.

Capped at just 24 guests, the indoor-outdoor space feels like the oversized living room of a very well-to-do friend. As soon as the door shuts, the airport chatter is silenced and the smell of gardenia hits your nose—impressive on its own—but even more so when you round the corner and see the well-decorated lounge and grassy exterior space that lets you sneak in one last ray of sunshine before boarding your flight.

Apartment 1929 guests enjoy a three-course meal (a concierge emailed me about a week in advance to take my order), and drinks are on offer from a beverage menu curated by Bar Leather Apron , a cocktail bar in Honolulu. When you're ready to board (with the option to be the first on the aircraft), you'll be driven on a golf cart over to the gate.

Just next to Apartment 1929 is Hawaiian Airlines' more classic Plumeria Lounge , reserved for Business Class guests, East Coast First Class guests, and Pualani Platinums flying internationally. A level below is the Premier Club , which is open more widely to North America and Neighbor Island First Class guests, Pualani Gold & Platinum Elites, and Premier Club members.

Hawaiian Airlines' new Dreamliner planes feature 34 Leihōkū Suites.

Onboard comforts

On the way to Honolulu , I was seated in the first row of the premium economy, or Extra Comfort, cabin. I had more than enough leg room, especially as I was in a bulkhead seat. While this meant I had to store my personal item for takeoff and landing, I still had access to a pull-up entertainment system and fold-out table for meals. The seats were comfortable, and the extra-large windows helped the space feel a little more open than on older or smaller planes. If you're considering upgrading from the Main Cabin, but not all the way to Business Class, I'd say it's absolutely worth it for any flights over, say, four hours, to give yourself some extra breathing room.

On the return flight, I experienced the highly-anticipated Leihōkū Suites. There are 34 of these lie-flat seats onboard, making it the largest business class cabin in Hawaiian's fleet and the first to have sliding doors, allowing for a nice level of privacy. The suites, set up in a 1-2-1 configuration, with the option to combine the middle two for companions or families, offer plenty of space to spread out and get comfortable—I'm 5'6" and had a good half a foot of extra leg room when the seat was fully extended. A pillow and blanket was provided, though no pajamas. (Of note when booking the Leihōkū Suites: Hawaiian has historically referred to its front cabin as first class on domestic flights and as business class on international flights.)

The 18" entertainment system is loaded up with new release movies, rewatch-favorite TV shows like Friends and Gilmore Girls, popular current shows like Abbott Elementary , and Hawaii-made music videos and documentaries on Hana Hou! TV. Along with personal charging outlets, a wireless cell phone charging station is conveniently placed next to the headrest.

Throughout the plane, those large windows are configured to different lighting modes throughout the flight, meant to delineate between dining, sleeping, and wake-up times. (Early in the flight these can be adjusted individually by the person in the window seat, but at some point a central programming takes over.)

Onboard WiFi is not yet enabled, unfortunately, though the hope is to get it up and running by the end of the year or early next. Hawaiian Airlines is in the process of rolling out Starlink internet across its A231 and A330 planes first.

Dreamliner design

In designing the plane's interiors, executive vice president and chief marketing officer Avi Mannis says the brand channeled on-the-ground hospitality spaces, particularly new hotel design in Hawaii , and aimed to evoke a sense of place. Following suit with much of Hawaiian design, the plane tells a story, Mannis says: one of Polynesian wayfinding, or navigation. Fiber optics in the ceiling simulate a starry night, wood-like slats in the airplane's entryway are inspired by canoes, and boxy, geometric silhouettes are softened to present a wave-like feel throughout the plane.

It is in fact a beautiful aircraft. When I first boarded, my eyes were immediately drawn to the dome in the entryway; it's a standard feature on 737s, but in this one, there are leaf designs etched into it.

In between attempts to snooze, take a look around at your surroundings: When not in night mode, the simulated cabin sky depicts soft daylight or soothing sunrises and sunsets. Different lavatories feature different patterned wallpapers (and excellent-smelling coconut hand soap), and the light-up bathroom icons were custom-made to include a Hawaiian shirt and dress. These small, thoughtful details aren't necessary, but they do add some fun and whimsy to the start (or end) of your vacation.

In the 79 Extra Comfort seats, travelers can enjoy early boarding, extra leg room, and AC power outlets.

In-flight dining

The airline's in-flight meal program is run by husband-and-wife duo Michelle Karr-Ueoka and Wade Ueoka of Honolulu's M-W Restaurant . The chef couple works with other Hawaiian-based restaurants and chefs to develop menus on a rotating basis; when I flew, Jason Yamaguchi's menu included a delicious curried braised brisket, papaya salad, and warm taro roll. Soon to join the Featured Chef club: Keaka Lee from Kapa Hale .

When seating in the Leihōkū Suites, I was offered a welcome drink of guava juice, a mai-tai from Kō Hana (an agricole rum distillery in the Honolulu area), or sparkling wine; meal service came with even more alcoholic and non-alcoholic options. In Extra Comfort, the meal was a chicken sausage, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich; while less noteworthy than the full dinner on my return flight, it was still a solid meal—and free, a rare treat on domestic airlines these days.

Travelers heading to or from Honolulu via San Francisco can travel on the plane's daily service through May 14; a second 787-9 will begin dedicated service between Honolulu-Los Angeles on May 14 and Honolulu-Phoenix on May 15.

Back in 2018, the airline announced plans to purchase 10 Boeing 787-9 aircrafts; while the first was expected to go into service in 2021, pandemic and aircraft delays extended the timeframe. Over time, the airline plans to use some of the 300-seat 787s for long-haul routes from Hawaii to New York, Sydney, and Japan.

The takeaway

Hawaiian Airlines passengers are predominantly leisure travelers, so it's fitting that the team designed this plane, and the onboard experience, to feel like the start of your vacation rather than just the means to get there. Warm staff greetings, Hawaiian music playing in some of the bathrooms, the starry night sky, and the plane's general ambiance help achieve that goal, while the Leihōkū Suites offer an especially luxurious way to kick off or close out your trip.

Trip Report: Hawaiian Airlines Boeing 787 Dreamliner Inaugural Flight

' src=

I flew on the inaugural Hawaiian Airlines B787-9 from San Francisco to Honolulu. This is a photo trip report of my onboard experience.

There were some celebrations and festivities at the gate before we board. Passengers were given Hawaiian Lei. (Flower ring) as a special gesture.

Hawaiian Airlines B787-9 First Class "Leihōkū Suite"

Hawaiian Airlines’ Boeing 787-9 features a total of 300 seats, including 34 premium suites and 266 economy class seats.

The fully enclosed suites (Adient Aerospace Ascent) are a huge step up for a leisure carrier like Hawaiian Airlines. Special lighting was presented in the cabin during boarding which makes it extra welcoming.

Features of the Hawaiian Airlines First Class "Leihōkū Suite" include a cocktail side table, personal storage with mirror, wireless phone charging, power point.

The Flight to Honolulu

We took off on-time from Runway 01 with a left turn towards the Pacific. You can watch the takeoff from my video .

Flight time from San Francisco to Honolulu was 5 hours and 11 minutes under the command of Captain Mary Scott and Captain John. We cruised at 38,000 ft with Mach .85 speed.

In Economy, flight attendants first came with a buy-on-board cart, followed by complimentary drinks and a free breakfast sandwich.

a man holding a bottle of alcohol in a plane

The breakfast in the Premium cabin was quite underwhelmed, it is on par with any other U.S. domestic flight with one tray breakfast. I was expecting better.

a tray with food on it

I'd say given the long flight, the food option in both Premium and Economy cabins could be better. Also, the pillow and blanket used in First Class are disposable grade. They could be better with a bigger pillow and a proper duvet.

In the main cabin, there are 72 "extra comfort seats" in front of the Economy cabin (See chart below). These seats have a lot more legroom. On my flight, it was offered for $109 extra.

Lucky Approach

As the wind came from the West, we were treated to a beautiful approach into Honolulu. I enjoyed a scenic landing with great views of the Diamond Head, Waikiki Beach and Honolulu downtown, followed by a 45-degree turn and a manual landing. I was told only about "10%" of the time they use this approach.

aerial view of a volcano in the middle of Diamond Head

The 5-hour flight went by quickly as the cabin was quiet and more comfortable with better humidity. With all the festivity onboard, the inaugural flight doesn't feel like a typical U.S. domestic flight. I appreciate the friendly crew making the experience extra enjoyable.

The Hawaiian Airlines new B787-9 is a huge step up in Premium Cabin with the fully enclosed suite. However, I'd say the soft product on domestic flight left a lot to be desired.

  • Brand new airplane with more premium seats/suites than their A330
  • Better cabin humidity and quieter
  • Proper in-flight entertainment (Starlink Wi-Fi to follow soon)
  • Soft products need to elevate to match the premium hard product

The Hawaiian Airlines B787 is available on the following routes:

  • Flights from Honolulu (HNL) to San Francisco (SFO)
  • Flights from Honolulu (HNL) to Los Angeles (LAX) as of May 14, 2024
  • Flights from Honolulu (HNL) to Phoenix (PHX) as of May 15, 2024

Bonus - Bellanca CH-300 Pacemaker

While I was in Hawaii, I get to experience the historical Bellanca CH-300 Pacemaker, which made history by introducing commercial air service to the Hawaiian Islands.

a man standing next to an airplane

The aircraft first launched with a series of sightseeing flights around Oʻahu. It sparked enough curiosity among locals and visitors to convince the Inter-Island Steam Navigation Company board to expand its footprint into aviation. One month later, on Nov. 11, 1929, Inter-Island Airways was inaugurated, which later became Hawaiian Airlines .

I am glad to experience this truly historical plane, which still flies high over the Hawaiian skies ninety-five years later.

You can see my video below for more flying action.

Hawaiian Airlines Premium Airport Service + 1929 Lounge

On my departure, I was invited to try out Hawaiian new Premium Airport service, which starts the moment when you arrive at the airport terminal.

The service can be purchased here . Pricing starts at $500 for a party of 2.

a man and woman standing next to each other

The staff already printed out my boarding pass while waiting for my arrival. Within minutes, I was through security and escorted to a "hidden" private lounge called 1929 (the year Hawaiian Airlines started flying).

a man standing in front of a door

There are several lounges, which can host up to 2-3 parties at once while remain private. There are also private shower room and toilet facilities.

a room with a television and couches

There is a free bar menu with cocktails, champagne, wine and juice available to order. I tried out 2 different cocktails and some Hawaiian sodas.

a table with drinks and food on it

In terms of food, you can pre-order it before your arrival. You will receive an email detailing the food options.

a screenshot of a cellphone

I pre-ordered the teriyaki chicken entree. Interestingly, It is presented the same as those on the flight...

The lounge attendant told me there are limitations to serve better food as the airport (state-owned) needs to approve any kitchen installation inside the lounge. Currently, the food came from Hawaiian Airlines caterer.

a plate of food on a table

Before the departure, the private car will take you to your gate/terminal and you will be escorted onto the plane.

a black suv parked in a parking lot

I think everything with the lounge is perfect, except they need to serve better food and improve the presentation.

$500 for 2 no doubt won't fit everyone's budget but for those who value privacy and time, this may be a good solution. This is the only premium VIP service offered at the Honolulu Airport.

Respected Samchui. I hope you must be in good health and cheers. My name is Dilip shah I am 83 years old.living in San jose airport area.sfo. I am always reading your e mail. And so much happy about your artical . My good wishes to you.and take care. With warm regards. Dilip shah.

Hi Sam, I am a 36-year retired airline captain. I love your presentations and have been following you for several years. I particularly appreciate your honesty in your critiques, whether good or not so good. For an honest critique, it’s the only way to go! I am sorry you did not get to sample the fantastic first-class services of Braniff International in Braniff’s Hay Day, which were of very high quality from one end to the other. I must add that when I joined Ansett Australia, I was very proud of our services. Keep up the great work, my friend: kindest Regards, Roger L Duncan Captain, Braniff International and Ansett Australia.

Thank you for posting yet another very interesting video and article.

I am sure that I will not be alone in saying that your posts are very much appreciated by your followers.

Your post and videos are both amusing and informative regardless of which airline you feature.

Long may you continue to entertain and inform those who appreciate your efforts.

are you catching aa flight on ANA third A380 to Narita ( the Orange one) welcome to Honolulu

What about main cabin economy? Do the seats have more legroom? Do the seats have more cushion? The configuration is 3-3-3. For main cabin would the A330 be preferred over the Dreamliner?

Given it was a full flight, I only managed trying the extra comfort Economy seat which is totally worth the $109 upgrade.

I would prefer it be 2-4-2 for more room and ease of seating assignments

Simple Flying

Usdot takes big bite out of airline ancillaries with new "junk fee" rules.

More transparency to help consumers avoid surprise fees when booking fares.

  • New DOT rule mandates airlines to disclose extra fees upfront, promoting fairer competition and transparency for passengers.
  • Passengers will now have clear information on potential added costs, preventing surprise fees and misleading promotions by airlines.
  • Despite potential impact on airline profits, these changes aim to build consumer trust and increase industry integrity over time.

The US Department of Transportation (DOT) has announced a rule mandating airlines and agents to inform passengers of any so-called "junk fees" they may face with their fares. This includes bag-checking fees and reservation change/cancelation charges.

DOT introduces junk fees rule

The final rule aims to establish a fairer and more competitive market by ensuring passengers have full clarity on the possible fees they may face when booking a ticket with an airline. It will require carriers and agents to unpack critical extra service fees " upfront, clearly, conspicuously, and accurately " the first time fares are displayed. While passengers booking tickets will eventually see all the added costs they may have to pay, it isn't always immediately evident when first exploring fares, leading to what the DOT terms "surprise junk fees" only being revealed later in the booking process.

For example, a passenger may be enticed to book an $80 fare with one airline over a $100 fare with another, only to discover that the added cost of critical services like checking a bag will ultimately make the former fare cost more than the latter. By this point, many will have progressed far enough with their booking that they will accept the added costs rather than start the booking process all over again with a different airline.

US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said the rule would help passengers save over half a billion dollars each year, adding,

"Airlines should compete with one another to secure passengers’ business—not to see who can charge the most in surprise fees."

Junk fee changes explained

The DOT defines critical extra services as checking a first or second bag, a carry-on bag, reservation changes or cancelations, and " any other services determined to be critical by the Secretary in the future after public feedback ."

Extra fees explained

Along with transparent disclosure of critical extra fees upfront during the initial presentation of fares, airlines and agents must provide specific details on the airline's policy for baggage and reservation costs. This includes weight and dimensions for baggage, and any restrictions on reservation changes or cancelations.

Share up-to-date information

Airlines will now be required to keep third-party companies, such as agents and ticketing websites, with " useable, current, and accurate information " on their baggage and reservation policies.

Seat selection

Seat selection is one of the key ancillary products offered by airlines. When booking with some carriers, it isn't always explicitly stated that you don't have to pay for a seat if you don't want to. Airlines and agents will now need to explicitly state the following: " A seat is included in your fare. You are not required to purchase a seat assignment to travel. If you decide to purchase a ticket and do not select a seat prior to purchase, a seat will be provided to you without additional charge when you travel. "

US Airlines Raking In Billions From Seat Assignment Fees

Standard and passenger-specific fees.

Some passengers, like those in loyalty programs, with disabilities or military status, can be exempt from certain fees. They must now be given the option to receive this information through " information affirmatively provided by the consumer. "

Discount tricks

Carriers can appear to offer a "discounted" fare that seems appealing to the consumer but only discounts a small portion of the overall fare. Airlines will now be banned from advertising discounts on the base fare that does not include mandatory carrier-imposed fees.

Good or bad for airlines?

Airlines, particularly low and ultra-low-cost ones, rely heavily on ancillary revenue to keep their margins profitable. Ancillary revenue continues to grow year-by-year, reaching a record $118 billion in 2023 - this is up almost 20% from 2022 and almost triple the revenue from just 10 years ago.

Why Ancillary Revenue Is Crucial For Airlines

While charging fees for extra services in itself is perfectly legitimate, airlines can implement disingenuous practices that, while legally compliant, often come at the cost of moral integrity and fairness. These changes may hit airline pockets in the short term but could ultimately help boost consumer confidence in the industry and encourage more people to fly.
