How To Use Spelling Worksheets

Use this spelling worksheet generator to create your own spelling practice worksheets. If your child’s teacher has provided spelling words for your child, you can simply type those words into the word box and select which worksheet you would like to create. The word lists are made by spelling rules and include several words that follow that rule. Spelling lists do not go by grade level until your child has mastered all of the spelling rules. Some children will master the spelling rules sooner than others, so until then, use the spelling assessment to see which rules your child needs to work on and select from the pre-made lists. You should select which words on the list fit your child’s needs and delete the others – they are only there for ideas.

For extra spelling practice worksheets, we provide fun ways to practice spelling words such as look-cover-write worksheets, write your spelling words 3 times each worksheets, use spelling words in a sentence worksheets, define spelling words worksheets, put your spelling words in alphabetical (ABC) order and spelling word scramble worksheets.

The read it, write it, make it and read it, make it mats are there for you to print and laminate and use with other multisensory materials. There are links for those materials at the bottom of this page.

Free Spelling Worksheet Makers

I have always loved words, and spelling for me was one of the easiest subjects to teach. Spelling can be stressful and frustrating, or it can be fun and exciting. I like it to be the latter. That’s why I love hands-on, simple but challenging spelling worksheets.

This list of free spelling worksheet makers and activities has many different spelling ideas, including sight word spelling, word building, online spelling test generators, and more! I think you will find them very handy for your next spelling lesson.

Add even more language arts practice with these fun ways to practice spelling  with your kids!

What are ideas to make spelling fun for kids?

Incorporating play into the learning process can often help children to become more enthusiastic. This is certainly true of learning spelling; when children have fun while they are studying, the task becomes less intimidating and more enjoyable.

One way to ensure that kids have a great time while they learn is by using music and rhythm activities.

Have your child listen to a song through headphones and then spell each of the words as they hear them. To increase the level of challenge you could even add movement: have your child spell out each word as they dance around in circles!

Another idea is to introduce physical materials such as colored magnetic letters or plastic block pieces for children to recreate the targeted words.

For an extra challenge, consider adding an element of competition — for example, dividing students into teams so that each group races against the clock, see who can create all their target words first!

What are some of the easiest words to help your child learn how to spell?

Ready to help your child start mastering the art of spelling? Introducing simple words into their repertoire is essential for learning those tricky rules of grammar.

Start with common, three-letter words that use basic letter sounds like ‘at’, ‘up’, and ‘dog’. As your child becomes comfortable with these, move onto other short words such as ‘run’, ‘top’ and ‘big’.

Such words have minimal irregularities making them easier to learn than longer, more complex words.

As your child progresses, you can introduce them to other variations such as plurals and adjectives – adding a ‘s’ or an ending such as ‘ing’ or ‘ed’.

With concrete examples and practice sessions tailored to their needs, your child can make steady progress in their spelling capabilities.

How many spelling words should a child work on learning at once?

When learning how to spell, it is important for children to focus on a manageable number of words at a time. The exact amount will vary depending on the child’s age, learning ability, and comfort level.

The best approach is to break up the process into smaller incremental steps – rather than overwhelming them with an entire list of words.

This might involve focusing on 1-3 new words each day, along with reviewing any from the day before.

Over time, parents can gradually increase the number of words presented as the child becomes more comfortable.

While this approach takes patience and perseverance, it will be beneficial in the long run by helping children develop strong spelling proficiency.

Free Spelling Activities

spelling word homework maker

I’m sharing 12 FREE, NO PREP, printable and digital Spelling Activities for Kindergarten, first and second grade students! These activities provide meaningful and engaging spelling practice and are perfect for any word work literacy center. I also offer details about my Year-Long Weekly Word Study Resource that offers weekly word lists, practice activities, parent letters, assessments and MORE for k-3!

Hey Friends!

I’m curious…. in your already crowded instruction schedule, does word study have a place?  Have you found a way to make spelling instructiion more than just giving a list of words on Monday and assessing on Friday?  Resources for teaching spelling can be hard to come by. Sometimes it feels like with the intense focus on more critical thinking skills in literacy, explicit spelling instruction (or word study) has become an outdated practice.

But I think we can all agree we all want our students to be strong spellers!  Spelling is important!  It is related to reading.  If students can spell well, they will read well.   It’s related to writing.  When students spell well they can focus on communicating their ideas, rather than worrying about how to construct words.

If you are looking for a word study program to use with your students, or maybe just looking to freshen up your spelling activities then you have come to the right place.  Today I’m excited to describe to you the Year-Long Weekly Word Study bundles I have created for kindergarten, first, second and third grade, as well as share my FREE, NO PREP Spelling Activities!

spelling word homework maker

Free Spelling Activities

You’ve got a lot on your plate, so to help lighten your load I created this resource that includes 12 different EDITABLE spelling printables!  It is totally free and provides meaningful practice and the repetition students need for mastery of the spelling words and phonics patterns you teach.  With many activities to choose from, spelling practice will always feel fresh and engaging for students.

To save you time, I created these Spelling Activities as an editable “autofill” document.  This means the ONLY thing you have to do is insert your spelling words (up to 12) into the spelling activities word list.  That’s it!!  Once you type your words into the word list, you simply print the pages you want to use.

Any of these activities make a great addition to your weekly word work routine.  Simply pair the spelling word cards with a pocket chart and print a few activities for an instant literacy center!  They also make great morning work or homework practice.

The FREE resource includes ALL of the following activities:

💗 Trace and Write Spelling

💗 ABC Order

💗 ipad Spelling

💗 Vowel Consonant Spelling

💗 Sign Language Spelling

💗 Rainbow Spelling *note this has been updated to include Rainbow Sound Spelling

💗 Triangle Spelling

💗 Spelling Illustrations

💗 Make a Word Search

A Year-Long Weekly Word Study Resource for K-3

So while the activity pages I’ve shared above could be used in a variety of ways, I know there are teachers who are looking for more.  They want an actual program that explicitly teaches students different spelling patterns each week and offers them meaningful practice so students can master those patterns. That’s why I created Year-Long Weekly Word Study Resources for Kindergarten, first, second and third grade students.

spelling word homework maker

Word study units are different from traditional spelling units.  Instead of giving students a list of words to memorize each week, word study units focus on a specific phonics skill.  Students are given explicit instruction on the phonics pattern.  They engage in activities throughout the week that allow them to practice the phonics skill and investigate and discover the patterns in words.

Word study offers students opportunities to investigate and discover the patterns in words. When students have knowledge of these patterns they don’t learn to spell just one word at a time.  They can generalize and apply their new learning to their reading and their writing.

spelling word homework maker

My Weekly Word Study Units have EVERYTHING you need to provide your students with effective word study instruction and spelling practice all year long!

I have different units for kindergarten , first , second , AND third-grade students. While the units vary a bit from grade to grade, they all contain these core components:

💕 A Scope and Sequence

We know that for instruction to be most effective, it must be systematic and follow a scope and sequence . The scope and sequences included in these resources are based on my learning including Wiley Blevins’ book,  A Fresh Look at Phonics *,  The Reading Teacher’s Top Ten Tools, and  Speech to Print  and are specific for each grade.

The word study units each include a phonics scope and sequence specific to the grade.

💕 Word cards

These word cards can be printed out on card stock and used in centers, small groups, or for your whole group instruction.

spelling word homework maker

💕 3 Editable Practice Printables for Each Unit

We know that in order for students to master the skills we teach they need a lot of practice.  For every unit, you’ll get 3 editable practice printables. The activities vary slightly depending on grade and the skill that is being taught.

spelling word homework maker

💕 Editable Assessments

spelling word homework maker

While the assessments vary a bit from grade to grade, they all include:

– Word Dictation:  words that follow the week’s phonics skills and bonus spaces for review or high-frequency words.

– Sentence Dictation:  a sentence that includes target phonics skill words, previously taught phonics skill words and high-frequency words.

– Spelling Error Analysis:  a sentence that includes target phonics skill words, previously taught phonics skill words and high-frequency words. Students must correct the mistakes and rewrite the corrected sentences.

💕 A Teacher Assessment Guide and Master Word List

You’ll get an answer key for each unit to make it extra easy for you to quickly check those assessments!

spelling word homework maker

💕  A Family Letter for Each Unit

We know that word study looks a little different than traditional spelling that families may be accustomed to. This letter will help families understand the shift, inform them of the focus for the unit, and offer them ways to support their children at home.

Where can the Spelling Words (write the spelling words 3x each) be found? I must be overlooking them.

Hi Jennifer, you can sign up to download the 12 spelling activities in the blog post! 🙂 -Christina

' src=

I downloaded your free editable spelling activities. When I try to add my spelling words, Adobe tells me that it is “read only” and I need the owner password to edit. Your instructions didn’t include a password so I’m not sure what to do. 🙁

Hi Fay, I’m sorry you are having trouble, I’m happy to help! You will not need a password to edit the file. If you open the file in your internet browser, temporary files. or downloads the autofill features will not work!

You MUST open the PDF in your Adobe reader- it can be tricky, I made a quick video so you can verify it is open in Adobe https://youtu.be/Hdy_FZXD32I Here is how to open:

Download and save the file to your computer.

Open the file: it should automatically open in your Adobe Reader- if it does not, right click the file name and choose: Open in Adobe. If for some reason you don’t have the free reader installed on your computer, http://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/

Feel free to email me if you need more help! ~Christina

' src=

Love all the spelling activities and especially the autofill feature.. Is there a way to enlarge the text. It is too small for me to use with my class and don’t see a place to enlarge the font. Thank you.

Hi Rebecca, it sounds like there is a glitch, try closing the document and make sure to open in your Adobe reader for it to work correctly! You can see a video here of how it works! 🙂 -Christina

Create multiple text activities from a single text passage. Use one of the included text passages or create your own. Each text activity is automatically generated from the provided text. Includes cloze tests, cryptograms, spelling, punctuation practice, and more.

Sentence Activities

Generate sentence activities from any collection of sentences. Create your own collections with the sentence collection editor or use one of the built-in collections. Sentence activities include spelling, scrambles, matching, word shapes, and more.

Cloze Tests

Cloze Tests for Reading Comprehension

One of the most popular activity generators in Vocabulary Worksheet Factory is the cloze generator. Take any passage of text and instantly turn it into a cloze worksheet. Select the increment and miniumum word length, and optionally add a word bank, hints, and distractor words.

I use the vocabulary worksheet software. I have subscribed to another software package this year. I have just wasted US $30.00. No other software comes anywhere near your products. Your stuff is easy to use and adaptable to Australian needs. All the worksheets I make using Schoolhouse Technologies software look professional and are easy for children to use. The one off payment gives me a solid product that I can use almost daily.

Spelling Practice

Provide spelling practice and assessments in a variety of contexts. Turn any word list, text passage, or sentence collection into an instant spelling activity. Misspellings are automatically generated based on common typo, phonetic, and other spelling errors.

Word Searches Plus

Why settle for just the common style of word search? Mix things up with these word search variants: Word Angles, Wacky Trails, and Missing Vowels. With any of the word searches, employ a word bank or clues or both. Hide words in up to eight directions. Even use start bubbles to aid discovery.

Word Banks with a Twist

Word banks can be added to almost every word list activity to aid in solving the activity and to provide self-correction. But an extra fun challenge can be provided by turning the word list into its own jumble. Words can be reversed, split and rejoined in mixed order, or just completely scrambled. A puzzle within a puzzle.

I have been using the Vocabulary Worksheet Factory puzzles to teach math vocabulary and spelling. They are a big hit with the kids. Spelling and word recognition has improved. I assign them as homework and they return them completed dying to check the answer keys. I have left them as review work when a substitute teacher has been needed. I use them as a warm up exercise on Monday mornings...Keep up the good work.

Clues in Unexpected Places

We expect to find clues in crossword puzzles but not normally in word searches. So imagine a word search that, instead of a word bank simply providing a list of the hidden words, has a set of clues that must first be solved. Now imagine that option being available in 16 additional word puzzles from jumbles to decoding. A whole new level of challenge.

Easy Online Spelling Practice and Games

This website offers easy interactive spelling practice for kids in early elementary years (grades 1, 2, 3 and 4). Just type, listen and learn English - learning spelling can be as simple as that!

In this page you set up which words to test students on. The next page - after you hit the “Online Spelling Test” button - lets the kids tackle the spelling test and check their performance.

This free spelling website acts like an online computer program, in which you can create your own spelling lists, and have word games with your own words. All the games and the other educational interactive activities on this website are totally free!

The Word's Pronunciation

You can also use this website to learn how to pronounce English words. Each word is pronounced slowly and clearly, stressing and emphasizing each syllable and consonant. This makes it great for ESL students and special education students as well, helping to discover new English words and their correct pronunciation.

The Spelling Games & Activities

Online spelling test.

This is a simple test in which you hear the words of your list in random order, and type them inside the text boxes. Do your best to spell them correctly. At the end, you can press the "Check" button to see how well you have done. If you made a mistake, you can click a mistaken word to see its correct form. You can also ask to repeat the test with only the mistaken words.

Practice Your Words

This online practice will guide you step by step until you know how to write each word correctly just by hearing it. It consists of three phases: in the first phase, the letters to type are highlighted on the keyboard. in the second phase the word will still be presented, and you will copy it. In the third phase, you will type it from solely hearing it.

Reading With Spaceships & Reading With Balloons

These are two similar games, one in is more action themed, and the other is calmer. They practice reading the words and matching them to the words you hear. It's an easy reading activity, best for kids in 1st grade and 2nd grade.

Spelling Sharks

This is an action online spelling game. When you type correctly the words you hear, you can eliminate the sharks that are threatening the goldfish. The typing is under time pressure, yet you can press the "clue" button to have the word flashed on the screen. This activity can be challenging, and is more suitable for kids in 3rd grade and 4th grade.

This is a classic hangman game, using your own words. It's unique because you can actually hear the hidden words.

Word Search Puzzle

Immediately create a challenging online word search puzzle from your own list of words. After every word you find, you will hear it pronounced. The puzzles are dynamically created, and can sometimes be challenging even for kids in 5th grade and 6th grade.

The Spelling Lists

The lists are arranged in stages that coordinate to the children's development through spelling patterns, also called features. The beginning lists for first graders allow the kids to approach the words one sound at a time (i.e. initial consonants), to then building more of a sight word vocabulary (i.e. word families). Moving on from there, learners in second grade are able to chunk parts of words and process them more fluently when they read (i.e. consonant blends). Third graders continue the fluency of reading while they explore the meanings of words (i.e. silent consonants), while fourth graders can handle more complex spelling patterns (i.e. double consonant with e-drop). Of course, a student may overlap in stages, for instance, a second grader may still need some work on a few "first grade" features, or may dabble in some third grade features. They are merely an average "snapshot" for students in elementary school. In addition to the lists for each grade level, there are many "themed" lists for students of all ages to enjoy (themes such as September, Halloween, Winter, Earth Day, Science Day etc.) Spelling and studying words ultimately promotes a greater interest in reading and writing. When a child has word understanding and vocabulary knowledge, all aspects of Language Arts are enhanced.

Instructions

Which English words would you like to study? Type them into the empty spaces above. Once you do, you can click on the “Listen” button to hear how the word you typed is pronounced. Sometimes there is more than one way to pronounce a word - for example, “read” sounds different in the past: “I read this book yesterday” to the way it sounds in the future: “I will read this book tomorrow”. In this case you can hit the “Alternate” button to switch between the different pronunciations and choose the right one. You can also choose from the word lists we've prepared already in the drop-down menu. When you have finished adding words, choose an activity from one of the green buttons. The spelling list will appear for the students. They should read it carefully and, when ready, start the activity. When finished, the students will have the option to restart the activity or to exit to the main menu. In most cases, they will also get the option to repeat the activity with only the words they had trouble with.

Happy learning!
