4. Academic advantages of learning English

Given that the main language of instruction in many renowned universities and academic programs is English, you may find that you need to achieve a certain level of English proficiency before you can proceed with your studies.

This is especially true if you wish to pursue higher degrees, participate in research collaborations, and engage in academic discourse within your field of interest.

You may also decide to study in a country where English is spoken as the primary language, and you will certainly need a good command of the language in order to succeed with this.

In this way, studying English can open doors to other fields of study, too.

5. Learning another language boosts cognitive ability

One of the many benefits to learning a new language is that it encourages your brain to work in different ways.

This study looked at adults learning a second language and noted that after an initial learning period, and with sustained practice of at least five hours per week, the subjects benefitted from longer attention spans and a better ability to maintain attention when switching between tasks.

There is growing evidence that people who can speak more than one language are more creative and empathetic toward others. It’s also believed that language learning can counteract some of the negative cognitive decline brought on by aging. Specifically, it can improve memory recall and delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease .

6. Cultural benefits of learning English

Learning to speak English can also help make you more culturally aware and broaden your horizons in life.

Firstly, as you study the language you are also learning about the culture of English-speaking countries: national holidays, family traditions, history, food, music, and more.

Secondly, learning English will give you chances to meet people from other countries who are also learning the language. As you practice speaking together, you will discover fascinating things about how they do life differently to you.

Another benefit of learning English is that you can more easily access and enjoy movies, books, TV shows, music, and podcasts. Once you have a reasonable knowledge of English, you can also start using these forms of entertainment to continue learning, building your English fluency and comprehension .

For example, there are many ways you can use podcasts for learning English or learn new vocabulary from movies.

8. It’s a gift to your children

If you already have children or plan to start a family in the future, it’s an amazing gift to teach them English from birth or from a very young age.

Growing up bilingual, kids will experience the many benefits of knowing English without having to study it as a second language later in life. It’s a great way to give them a headstart in the globalized world they are living in.

Bilingual children also tend to have better attention spans, be better at multitasking, and be more emotionally perceptive than monolingual children, according to an article published by MindShift .

Speaking English at home can be a lot of fun, especially if you incorporate some  English-learning games into your family time.

9. Learning English can help you communicate better in your native language

As you learn a foreign language, you become more aware of how your primary language works.

If you want to learn English grammar , for example, you must first understand the grammar of your native language so you can recognize exactly what you are trying to say. It’s this kind of thing that you may never really consider if you only speak one language your whole life.

Second language fluency can also give you a better appreciation of the range and limitations of your native vocabulary. There are many words that exist in other languages that do not have an equivalent in English, and vice versa. This is why languages end up ‘borrowing’ words from one another so speakers can express themselves more eloquently.

10. You’ll form new relationships when you can speak English

English is the language of communication not just in business, but also when it comes to forming international friendships and relationships.

Whether you want to participate in global networking opportunities, write to a pen pal abroad, or even check out the international dating scene, you’ll find more opportunities opening up as you start learning the English language.

One great way to learn English and start meeting new people is with a language exchange program . You pair up with an English speaker who is interested in learning your native language, and you help each other by chatting in both languages.

11. English skills will give you greater confidence

Our final benefit of learning English (or anything else, for that matter) is that it will build your overall confidence in yourself.

As you use English more and realize your comprehension and communication are improving each day, you will gain confidence in your own ability to take on new challenges and meet the goals you set for yourself.

In this way, learning English will help motivate you to try other new things and continually develop yourself. If you’re lacking motivation right now, these quotes about learning English may help inspire you!

If you’re currently in the throes of trying to pick a language to study at school, or you fancy taking on a new language in your spare time, we’re willing to bet that the English speakers of this world would join us in giving you the following words of advice: if you have to choose one additional language to learn during the course of your years at school, make it English. Why? Let us count the ways…

1. English is one of the most widely spoken languages

Although it comes second to Mandarin in the total number of speakers, English is the language you’ll be able to use most widely, as it’s spoken in more countries than any other language. That means that English is the language that will give you the best return for your efforts; after all, intellectual challenge aside, there’s little point putting a huge amount of time and effort into learning a language that you’ll hardly ever have the opportunity to use.

As well as the UK, a whopping 60 of the world’s 196 countries have English as their official language:  the USA, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, to name but a few. It’s the language of diplomacy and the official language of the European Union, the United Nations, NATO and the European Free Trade Association, not to mention many Commonwealth countries. What’s more, English is the commonly adopted second language of people in a great many more countries, including Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Holland. In total, around 1.5 billion people speak English worldwide – and another billion are in the process of learning it. Will you make this number even bigger by learning it yourself?

2. English will open up more opportunities for you

Image shows a black and white photograph of two tourists on a road in the desert, themselves taking photographs.

Being able to speak English allows you to communicate effectively in numerous countries, and this opens up lots of possibilities for you in terms of the countries you could choose to seek work in one day – not to mention travel to as a tourist. You won’t have to worry about getting lost when you travel to an English-speaking country, as you’ll easily be able to ask for directions, and taking guided tours, ordering food and chatting to the locals will no longer be a source of stress.

What’s more, careers that involve lots of travel or international exposure, such as the airline, tourism and film industries, use English as their official language, and many employers in these sectors are likely to require evidence of a certain level of proficiency in English before they will consider employing you. This means that if you can speak English, you’ll find that you have a greater number of possible careers to choose from after you finish at university.

3. english will make you more desirable to employers.

Being fluent in a second language clearly demonstrates a powerful brain and reflects someone who has put in the huge amount of time, resources and commitment needed to master another language. But while being bilingual is impressive full stop, no matter what combination of languages you speak, adding English to your CV will be particularly useful. Not only is it an especially complex language to get to grips with, a fact that reflects well on you for having mastered it, but as we’ve seen, it’s also an incredibly useful language to learn because so many countries speak it. You’ll be in a much stronger position to apply for jobs overseas if you’ve reached a good level of fluency in English.

English has been referred to as “the language of business”, and it’s not hard to see why. If you have ambitions to become an international businessperson, it’s essential that you’re able to speak English fluently; business conducted internationally is done in English more often than not. Even if you’re not thinking of living and working abroad, that doesn’t mean you won’t find English a helpful language to put on your CV. There may well be plenty of English-speaking multinational corporations with offices in your home country. What’s more, English skills are just as desirable to employers in your own country and language as they are to employers in English-speaking countries. Here are just three examples to give you an idea of the kind of situations in which English may come in useful in your own country:

  • Business meetings – being able to speak English puts you in a position to be able to attend or hold international business meetings. Where several languages are represented, the chances are that the meeting will be conducted in English – and if you’re the only one in your team who can speak English, you may find yourself being put forward to attend important meetings, advancing yourself up the career ladder in the process.
  • Customer service and sales – you’ll be able to help with any English-speaking customers your employer may have – and sell to them. This gives you the chance to build relationships with overseas customers, and the ability to build relationships is an important business skill that puts you at an advantage over non-English speaking fellow employees and makes you more valuable to the company you work for.
  • Marketing and communications – if the company you end up working for markets its products or services to English-speaking countries, or releases other sorts of communications such as press releases to these countries, your knowledge of English may come in handy for translating marketing materials or communications with customers or sales prospects. The cultural knowledge you’ll acquire through learning English may also come in handy in knowing how to pitch products and ideas to English-speaking nations.

4. English gives you access to some of the world’s best universities

Image shows the entrance of Christ Church, Oxford.

English is widely regarded as the language of higher education. Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard and MIT are just a few of the famous universities that occupy the lofty heights of the top of the world education league tables, and you’ll need to speak English fluently for access to any of these, as they’re all English-speaking. It goes without saying that if you are able to study at one of these institutions, you’ll start your career with an illustrious name on your CV – and the benefits of that speak for themselves. If English isn’t your native language, you’ll need to take an English test during the admissions process to prove that your level of English is up to scratch for the demands of the academic environment. If you have your sights set on a top university, the effort you put in to study English as early as possible in your school years will be rewarded when it comes to the choice of universities to which you can apply.

5. English is the language of some of the world’s greatest literature

If you learn English, you’ll be able to enjoy works by some of the world’s most famous writers , in the language in which they were intended to be read or heard. The works of Shakespeare will take on a new meaning when you’re able to speak English, and you can look forward to enjoying such influential classics as Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights and her sister’s Jane Eyre , George Orwell’s 1984 and Animal Farm , Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and many, many more. Translation rarely does a writer true justice, so the only way to appreciate a classic literary work properly is to read it in its original language. Even better, through doing so, you’ll deepen your knowledge of English by enriching it with new words and sentence structures.

6. English allows you to get more from popular culture

Image shows Hogwarts Castle from Harry Potter.

The world’s highest-grossing movies are made in Hollywood, and needless to say, they are made in English. How many times have you been to see an American blockbuster and been frustrated by having to keep up with fast-paced subtitles? And how many times have you hummed a favourite pop song, but not been able to sing along because it’s in English and you don’t know the words? There’s a solution… Kiss those annoying cinema subtitles goodbye and get more out of the music you enjoy by learning English.

7. English allows you to attend international conferences and events

Major sporting events such as the Olympics are held in English, and so are international conferences, so competitors and delegates will need to be able to speak English to be able to get the most out of taking part. You may find yourself needing to attend conferences as part of your chosen career, so learning English now will be of enormous benefit to you in years to come. Not only will you be able to understand the talks, but you’ll get a lot more out of the networking opportunities that come with such events if you can talk effectively in English. You never know – there may be a new employer or client among the crowds of fellow delegates, so make sure you can communicate with them!

8. English has a simple alphabet and everyone’s equal

Image shows a disorderly pile of Scrabble tiles with various letters on them.

The English alphabet is straightforward, making it easier to master than the symbols or pictures that make up some languages. If you’ve struggled to learn more complex alphabets, you may find you make more progress with English, which shares an alphabet with many other languages.

There are no complicated symbols and characters to get to grips with in English, either; even in French, which essentially uses the same alphabet, there are several accents used on certain letters that alter the pronunciation. Not so in English. Furthermore, not matter how important they are, everyone is addressed as “you” – there are no polite and informal variants to agonise over (as there are in French with “tu” and “vous”, for instance), so you won’t need to worry about inadvertently creating social awkwardness by being overly familiar. And unlike many European languages, there are no masculine and feminine words to remember – it’s “a dog”, not “le chien”.

9. English gives you wider access to knowledge

Did you know that 55% of the world’s webpages are written in English? This absolutely dwarfs that of any other language, with the next most widely used language on the internet being Russian (which constitutes just 6% of pages). Knowledge of English therefore allows you to tap into far more of the world’s intellectual resources.

English is also the language of science. If you learn English, you won’t just have access to a greater proportion of the vast amount of knowledge available on the web; you’ll be able to educate yourself still further by being able to read scientific books and papers. English is, of course, essential if you intend to pursue a scientific career. Within the Science Citation Index, compiled by the Institute for Scientific Information, an estimated 95% of articles are written in English despite only around half being from English-speaking countries. According to the Open University , “At Oxford University two thirds of post-graduate students come from outside the UK. The students in the university’s chemistry research lab admit that working in English is a key attraction.”

10. English is a fantastic intellectual challenge!

Image shows a couple sat side-by-side, both reading.

English is undoubtedly one of the harder languages to learn . Full of nuances, unexpected pronunciations, odd rules and infuriating exceptions to rules, it takes dedication and perseverance to reach a good level of fluency. If you’re on the lookout for a new challenge, learning English may be just what you’re after. Not only that, but because it’s so widely spoken, it opens you up to a huge number of new cultural experiences, which will help you develop life skills, meet new people and grow your confidence in handling new situations.

Have we convinced you yet? If you’ve been inspired to learn English, consider enrolling on one of our English as a Foreign Language (EFL) courses   and develop your English skills in the company of like-minded students in the beautiful city of Oxford and Cambridge.

People will also seek you out to learn about you and your perspective on things. They will be interested in you and your experience in life. They will want to know the thoughts, hopes, fears and opinions of someone from another culture. When you feel more like you are more interesting, you will feel more special and confident!

If nothing else, learning English will make you smarter and keep your brain strong.

Scientists have been demonstrating that bilinguals are able to understand concepts quickly and get better scores on tests . Who would not want that?

One of the greatest benefits of learning any second language is increased cognitive flexibility or, in other words, how stretchy your brain is . By switching between two languages, bilingual people build this flexibility.

It’s been shown that bilingual children show better attention skills and have a greater ability to switch between tasks. Author Tracy Trautner writes that “Bilingual children may have a superior ability to focus on one thing and change their response, easily indicating cognitive flexibility.”

When you learn a language, you’re learning more words and making more associations between words . This is helpful when communicating in English, but it can also be helpful for communicating in your native language .

One of the reasons you may be learning English is because it’s considered a global language . More than 80 countries have formally listed English as an official language. A total of around 1.5 billion people around the world speak English —that’s a fifth of the world’s population!

There’s a reason why English is one of the most common second languages: it’s one of the most commonly used languages across the internet and in academia. By learning English, you can connect to this giant global network of English speakers.

Man-watching-TV-at-home

Because English is spoken by so many people around the world, it’s one of the primary languages of entertainment .

Many movies, TV shows, songs and books were originally created in English. Beyond their creative and educational value, these media products are just plain entertaining.

By learning the language, you can experience art and entertainment in its native language. While language dubbing is super helpful for many people, there’s nothing like watching a movie or TV show in its original language with the voices of the actors who you’re seeing on the screen.

two-women-talking-in-office

One of the great things about learning English is that it connects you to people around the world. You can connect with more people on social media, as you travel and in your daily life. These connections can actually turn into relationships if you’re able to communicate well.

Learning a language can be a very social activity. As you study English, you may practice by having one-on-one conversations with English speakers or other students learning English. You may join study groups or find a penpal, and you’ll probably meet other students in English classes who may not speak the same native language as you.

Speaking English is a great way to make connections with people around the world and build relationships that you might not otherwise be able to have.

English is the dominant language in the tech industry. Many programming languages, software documentation, and technical resources are available primarily in English. Proficiency in English can be beneficial for those pursuing careers in technology and IT.

English is the language of scientific research and academic publications. To stay at the forefront of innovation and contribute to global research, scientists and researchers worldwide need a strong command of English.

So, be smarter, more confident and helpful, get a job and date more.

That sounds good, right?

English is one key that unlocks a world of possibility.

By the end, you’ll see that there are plenty of good reasons to start learning (or continue learning) ESL!

Learning English can help you get a better job

It can improve your communication skills, it can help you understand other cultures, it can make traveling easier, it can give you a competitive edge in school or college applications, you’ll be able to enjoy more tv shows, movies, and books, improving your english, experienced, efficient, and free for students.

In the modern global economy, learning English can be an invaluable asset in helping you to get a better job. With a basic ability to speak and read the language, you will vastly expand your employment opportunities, unlocking positions that would otherwise be out of reach.

Not only do an increasing number of companies require a working knowledge of English for potential employees, but it is also one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, giving you access to international markets.

Additionally, having English skills listed on your CV can make recruiters take notice – many multinationals and organizations look for individuals who have a good level of proficiency. If you want to demonstrate that you are capable and employable, consider learning English: it can help greatly in your attempt to secure more lucrative work.

There is a direct correlation between the way we communicate and our overall success in life.

Most of us can likely recall a time when well-chosen words resulted in better outcomes at school, work, or even in our personal lives. As such, it pays to invest in developing strong communication skills.

Doing so can help you make powerful connections, construct persuasive arguments, and understand complex topics more easily.

Before becoming proficient in any language, you must first practice communicating with clarity and brevity. The more conversational situations that one finds themselves immersed in, the quicker one’s language skills will improve.

Additionally, reading literature is another natural way to develop these skills. You can tailor your vocabulary by understanding diverse terminology or simply become accustomed to new phrasings that you can use in everyday speaking.

The key takeaway is that communication should never be underestimated – by investing time and effort now, you will reap the rewards of an improved ability to express yourself both logically and effectively later on down the line.

Learning about other cultures is an invaluable part of developing a global perspective. Whether it be exploring the art and literature of another country, or attending a language class, each experience offers us a chance to broaden our view of the world.

Ultimately, it helps us build stronger relationships with those around us and challenges our perspectives on humanity itself by making us consider how we are all interconnected. Understanding other cultures is a crucial part of being able to relate with others effectively, no matter where they come from or what their professed beliefs may be.

We begin to understand how different backgrounds and beliefs shape one another’s opinions and open up to more diverse points of view. Additionally, it offers us an opportunity to reflect on our own values and customs. By studying another culture, we can get a better sense of where we stand in relation to other people outside our home environment.

It fosters greater trust, and appreciation, and ultimately empowers us all when faced with navigating differences between one another.  As such, learning more about various cultures is an incredibly beneficial investment toward taking charge of one’s worldview and growing more tolerant as an individual in today’s ever-changing society.

When it comes to traveling, having the right equipment can make all the difference. Not only is it important to have the correct travel bag and clothing, but having the right accessories can make your trip much smoother and easier.

For example, having a good-quality folding umbrella can ensure that you’re prepared for unexpected rainfall while out on vacation. Or if you’re going somewhere with slippery surfaces, a pair of good grip shoes or boots can provide added security while you explore new places.

These seemingly small things might seem insignificant, but they can make a big difference in how your journey unfolds. Other items such as noise cancellation headphones or multi-taskers like a combination USB charger and flashlight can help to keep all your electronic devices running smoothly and stress-free when out of town on vacation.

Quality travel accessories are essential tools for making any traveling experience more convenient, manageable, and enjoyable!

Choosing to undertake an extracurricular activity can provide a student the all-important edge when applying for college or university, and help to create a memorable impression. It shows that you have gone the extra mile not just to get good grades but also to develop specific interests and build character.

Furthermore, by participating in co-curricular activities, you gain valuable skills such as working as part of a team, communication, problem-solving, self-discipline, and leadership skills, which may otherwise be difficult to show on paper. Employers are also attracted to students who have developed interests and actively taken up challenges.

Therefore taking part in an extra-curricular activity helps provide future tangible benefits by allowing the presentation of unique abilities not just in your educational qualifications but also through your life experiences.

Ultimately, choosing to pursue an active interest beyond academics can prove invaluable when it comes to gaining entry into higher education or acquiring celebrated jobs.

In this time of social distancing, many people are looking for ways to occupy their downtime. One way to ensure you won’t run out of entertainment is to explore all the TV shows, movies, and books that are available.

You can browse specific streaming services to find a wide variety of selections from various movie genres, watch live TV programs from different countries and cultures, and read great works of literature from around the world. Studies have shown that reading regularly has a calming effect on the brain and is soothing for the soul.

Plus, if you’re looking for knowledge or enrichment, there are plenty of educational materials available as well. To ensure maximum enjoyment from your free-time pursuits in this era of staying at home, expand your horizons by exploring all the amazing content out there – you’ll never be bored again!

8 Benefits of Learning English in 2023

8 Benefits of Learning English in 2023

In today’s globalised world there are many reasons to learn a foreign language, and many benefits to studying English specifically.

Currently, there are around 1.5 billion English speakers around the world , which represents a fifth of the world’s total population. English is spoken in some of the most economically and culturally influential countries globally, and over the centuries has become the main language not only of international communication , but of international business , academia , medicine , science , technology and law .

When you consider this, it’s no wonder that so many people select to learn English as a way to enhance their life and the opportunities available to them, as well as exercise their brain!

In this article, we’ll look at eight of the many advantages that learning English will give you in 2023.

Benefit #1: Improve & Widen Employment Prospects

Benefit #2: Explore the World With Confidence

Benefit #3: Access World-Class Education Systems & Establishments

Benefit #4: Increase Cognitive Ability

Benefit #5: Start a Life in an English-Speaking Country

Benefit #6: Improve Communication Skills

Benefit #7: Open Up a World of Entertainment & Popular Culture

Benefit #8: Improve Your Confidence

Benefit #1: Improve and widen employment opportunities

As the primary language of communication across the globe, proficiency in English is a highly sought-after skill in the international workplace and one of the benefits of learning English is therefore that it significantly boosts your job opportunities.

Job applicants with fluency in English on their CV/resumé are statistically proven to have increased hiring potential . This may prove especially important in 2023 as many countries experience economic downturn and unemployment, partly as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is also widely recognised that those with second language fluency, whether they are bilingual or have studied a foreign language, can generally expect a higher salary (up to 10% – 15%) than those without.

It’s worth noting that some global professions have a particular need for English speakers, given that the main language within them – and global communication conducted within their communities – is English.

The business world and international trade are, of course, known for their use of English, and English has, for example, also become the international language of science and medicine since the mid 20th century. English is also the main language of the internet . An estimated 565 million people use the internet every day, and an estimated 55.5% of the world’s most visited websites are displayed in the English language.

American companies such as IBM, Microsoft and other tech pioneers were the ones who invented the first programming languages, and English is still the most widely used and therefore most important language in the world of programming and coding.

Benefit #2: Explore the world with confidence

Travel and exploring the world are once again on many people’s agendas.

As well as countries where English is the main language, such as the UK, United States, Canada, New Zealand and Australia , there are scores of different countries which also list English as an official language! These include Malaysia , Singapore , Fiji, Kenya, Hong Kong, India, Mauritius and the Philippines .

english benefits essay

Knowledge of English equips you with the tools to travel and communicate more effectively in so many parts of the world, which, in turn, allows to you to explore and travel more confidently and to learn more about the countries and cultures you visit.

Benefit #3: Access world-class education systems and establishments

Another reason to study English is the access it can give you to some of the best education systems and institutes in the world.

Many of the world’s best universities are either situated in the UK and the USA, or use English as the main language for their courses, and English skills are therefore key when it comes to applying.

english benefits essay

If you aspire to study at an English-speaking university, including the likes of Harvard , Stanford , Oxford , Cambridge or MIT , then achieving English proficiency is essential.

Benefit #4: Increase your cognitive ability (aka, brain power!)

Learning a second language is proven to be one of the best ways to keep your brain challenged and active. Studies have shown that the brain undergoes changes in electrical activity and even structure and size while learning another language; changes which do not occur when learning any other type of task or skill.

No matter what age you start at, there are benefits to learning a new language in addition to your native language.

It is now known that people who speak more than one language fluently have better memories and are more cognitively creative than those who don't, and in addition, studies suggest that the onset of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are diagnosed later for bilinguals than for monolinguals, meaning that knowledge of a second language can help us to stay mentally healthy for longer.

Benefit #5: Start a life in an English-speaking country

Another benefit of learning English is that it can offer you the chance to move to an English-speaking country. Often, to become a citizen in an English-speaking country, you must achieve a certain level of English proficiency.

Speaking and understanding English will also improve your chances of finding employment, and will help you converse and communicate successfully with those around you – whether it’s at the supermarket, the doctors, or with new friends and neighbours.

Benefit #6: Improve communication skills

english benefits essay

When you learn English as a second language, you are also learning new ways to think and express yourself both verbally and through the written word.

Learning multiple languages can help you communicate more clearly in any language as you learn more about how language itself works and how to use it to communicate with others in all kinds of social, educational and professional settings.

Benefit #7: Open up a world of entertainment and popular culture

english benefits essay

Many of the world’s most iconic film and TV shows have been produced in the English language, much of it in Hollywood, and English fluency will offer you the chance to enjoy and appreciate them in their original form — either with or without subtitles.

The same applies to literature, and with so many world-famous works produced originally in the English language, you will have endless options to enjoy. From JK Rowling to Shakespeare , there is something to suit all tastes!

Watching and reading English language media will also enhance your language skills, in particular your listening skills and reading skills. Familiarity with this type of world-famous pop culture will open up endless topics of conversation when you come to practising your speaking skills too!

Benefit #8: Improve your confidence

Being able to speak a foreign language is a sought-after and much admired skill, no matter what your motivation for learning. A final benefit of learning English, or any other foreign language, therefore, is the pride and self confidence that comes with knowing your language skills can help you work and travel in different parts of the world, and communicate with people from all kinds of cultures and backgrounds.

Self-confidence can take you far in the world of today, and mastering a new and useful language will certainly help you achieve it.

Benefits of learning English

benefits of learning English

Learning a language is considered one of the most beneficial undertakings, with English being one of the most useful to learn. Currently, there are 1.5 billion people speaking and learning English. The benefits of learning English are vast and numerous for any individual.

English and your social life

Learning English prepares learners for the wealth of daily interactions that they may encounter, especially when travelling abroad. Even at a basic level, learning English allows learners to successfully order food, go shopping and buy tickets for events. The confidence gained from this is priceless, and is only a small part of what learning English has to offer. Learners of English can also form friendships with people from a variety of backgrounds and this gives them a better understanding of the world and its cultures.

Just as importantly, learning English opens learners up to the vast English-language media and culture that is available locally and internationally, whether that is film, news or literature. For many, this is not only an advantage in itself but also an opportunity for further learning. Adult courses at the British Council in Malaysia enable students to develop communicative and receptive skills for these various social situations and have a strong emphasis on feeding back on how our learners are developing.

English and your career

English is the default language option in the business and career-oriented world. Companies and organisations throughout the world rely on English as their language of communication. Having English on your resume opens doors in the professional world and boosts your hiring potential both in local organisations and across the globe. English allows individuals to seek jobs and pursue opportunities in many countries, leading to better salaries and training prospects within the company. Employers value those who can use their language skills to write emails and reports, give presentations or vocalise their opinions in meetings, and even communicate with clients. Here at British Council, we focus on developing our language learners to take on challenges within the workplace by improving their professional skills through our everyday SMART classes and Business Skills workshops provided for different levels. We encourage our students to use their language skills to further their professional career.

English and your Academic life

Another clear benefit of learning English is how it opens doors to pursue educational opportunities. There are two common types of learners in this area: those that desire to take IELTS to enter universities and those that are developing general academic skills. Enrolling in IELTS-focused classes allows learners to develop the test-taking techniques which enable them to apply to the school they want and pursue their desired major or post-graduate studies like a Master’s or PhD.

The British Council in Malaysia provides support for students who want to develop in these areas, with courses designed both for those preparing for IELTS exams and those who are looking to develop their academic skills in a broader sense.

Why Learning English Is Important: 7 Benefits of Studying English

english benefits essay

No one can deny it.

English is the dominant language of the world.

People with good English have serious advantages over those with poor English skills, and these advantages will only get bigger as time passes.

If your English is weak, better start improving your English now!

Here are the benefits of learning English.

Benefit #1: Earn More Money

If your English is good, you qualify for more job opportunities and higher pay.

If you visit any job search site, you’ll find that most jobs require a good command of English.

english benefits essay

Everything else being equal, people with good English earn more than those with poor English.

Here’s a real-world example: my sister, who works at Bumrungrad International hospital (largest private hospital in Southeast Asia), receives a monthly bonus on top of her base salary simply because she got a high score on the TOEIC English test.

Even if you aren’t looking for a job, having a good command of English still benefits you financially.

For instance, if you’re a freelancer who can write English well, you can sell your services through international freelance sites like Fiverr or Upwork instead of the local ones. This way you reach a wider audience, get more work, and earn more!

My English-Language YouTube Channel

Here’s a personal example of how I benefit from my ability to speak English:

I have a small YouTube channel where I share tips for learning English. Due to my laziness, the channel has only 13 public videos — a miniscule number compared to other channels.

But because the channel is in the English language , it reaches people worldwide and has generated over 22 millions views and has earned considerable income for me.

If I had made the videos in my native language, my channel would be attracting a much smaller audience, earning less income (due to fewer views and lower ad rates), and making less impact.

Where should I send the English course to?

close-link

Benefit #2: More Career Options

A good knowledge of English opens up new career possibilities.

With decent English skills, you might be able to become an English teacher, a private English tutor, a tour guide, or a translator. You can take up one of these jobs on the side, or you can make it your primary way of earning income.

Your English doesn’t even have to be perfect to qualify you for these jobs.

Sometimes, having slightly above average English skills is enough.

Even though your English is not that great, you can still teach English to children.

Even though you speak English with an accent, you can still be a tour guide.

Although your written English isn’t perfect, you can still translate English into your native language.

You just have to make sure that your English is above average.

I used to be a software engineer, but thanks to my English skills, today I make a living teaching English online. My English is not perfect, and people make fun of my accent on my YouTube channel all the time, but that doesn’t stop me.

Benefit #3: Access to More Knowledge & Information

english benefits essay

Today you can find information about almost anything.

There are books, articles, videos, audio programs, online courses, and podcasts on every topic imaginable.

But here’s the caveat: most of the information is in the English language.

So if you’re unable to read or listen in English well, you have access to only a limited amount of information.

english benefits essay

I’m speaking from experience here.

As a website owner, I sometimes have to search online for ways to fix issues on my site, which is built using the WordPress software. However, it’s difficult to find useful information about WordPress in my native language.

But if I search in English instead, the task becomes much easier because there’s plenty of information in English.

If you have good English reading and listening skills, you are at a big advantage; you have access to an enormous supply of knowledge.

Benefit #4: Communicate Globally

english benefits essay

If your English is good, you can communicate with people all over the world.

This comes in handy in various situations.

Here’s a personal example: one time my PayPal account was suspended for some reason, so I couldn’t withdrew my money. I tried contacting them via email but got no response. But since I could speak English, I called customer support (located in Singapore) and explained the situation. The problem was resolved soon after.

I’m comfortable using English-language services like PayPal, Fiverr (freelance services site), Google Drive, Hostgator (web hosting). If there’s a problem, I know I can explain the problem in English and get it sorted out quickly.

Sadly, many people aren’t comfortable with these services because they can’t communicate in English so well.

Benefit #5: Travel

english benefits essay

Do you enjoy visiting new counties?

Does your job involve traveling abroad?

If so, learning English will make your travel life easier.

English is the most commonly spoken language in the world.

It’s the most popular “second language.” Most people choose to learn English after their native language. In many countries, it’s a mandatory subject in school.

This means when you’re abroad, you’re more likely to find someone who knows English than someone who knows Mandarin Chinese or Spanish.

And as you can see from the map below, the English-speaking populations are more “spread out” across the globe, whereas the speaking populations of other languages are usually confined to a single country or continent.

english benefits essay

This makes English the most useful language to learn.

If your spoken English is good, you can travel abroad without worrying too much about language barrier. You can confidently communicate with foreigners without resorting to sign language or translation apps.

Benefit #6: Enjoy Books, Movies, and TV Shows in English

The English-speaking cultures have produced many creative works in various forms such as books, movies, and TV shows.

english benefits essay

If you have good comprehension in English, you can enjoy these creations in their original language—English.

Now you might be thinking, “Why bother with the originals when I can enjoy the translated versions?”

Unfortunately, there are two problems with translated works.

Problem #1: Availability

Sadly, many creative works are not available in a foreign language, especially the less popular ones.

But if you understand English well, this won’t be a problem. You can just go straight to the source materials.

It’s nice being able to enjoy things in their original forms. Lately I’ve been listening to the Harry Potter audiobooks. (It’s a different experience than reading the books.) I usually listen to them during my workouts.

These audiobooks aren’t available in my native language. If my English listening was poor, I wouldn’t be able to enjoy them.

Problem #2: Loss of meaning

english benefits essay

No two languages are equal.

When something is translated into another language, it’s inevitable that some meaning will be lost, no matter how good the translator is.

Sometimes this is due to poor translation. Other times it’s because of certain differences between the two languages, or because of some unique characteristics of English.

For example, consider these wordplay jokes:

Q: How do you count cows? A: With a cow culator. Q: Why did the school kids eat their homework? A: Because their teacher told them it was a piece of cake . Q: What do you call a bee that can’t make up its mind? A: A may be . I have a few jokes about unemployed people, but none of them work .

It’s impossible to translate these jokes. You must read them in English to get the jokes!

Benefit #7: Mental Fitness

english benefits essay

This may be the most overlooked benefit of learning English.

Just like how your body needs physical exercise to stay fit, your brain needs mental exercise to stay sharp and healthy.

And based on many research studies, learning English (or any other language) has many benefits to your mental capacity.

Here are a few examples:

  • People who speak two or more languages show symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease at a later time than speakers of a single language.
  • Babies growing up in bilingual homes are better at adapting to changes in their environments.
  • Bilinguals are better than monolinguals at switching between two tasks (thanks to the practice of switching back and forth between two languages).
  • Bilinguals are twice as likely to recover from a stroke than monolinguals. (A stroke is the death of brain cells caused by a lack of blood flow in the brain.)

The evidence is clear: being bilingual is beneficial throughout life, from infancy to adulthood to old age.

No matter how old you are, your brain will benefit greatly from the challenge and stimulation of learning English.

English has taken a new meaning in some countries that native speakers would call improper English. " Yes, we want" (Baron, 35) is the new battle cry of Madrid 's campaign on English. This may be bad English, but Baron is considering the possibility of it becoming a new form of English.

In the persuasive article “Why Teens Are Getting Shut Out of the Workforce”, Andrew Soergel argues that teens are not holding a job because the elders are not moving up and the teens college enrollment rate is very high. A research shows that there is nearly 40 percent decline in the employment rate among 16-19 years old over the last 12 years. This is the lowest rate since World War II. There must be some reasons that makes the teens employment rate extremely low. A report also noted that people who work at a young age are more likely to earn more money.

How to Structure an Essay | Tips & Templates

Published on September 18, 2020 by Jack Caulfield . Revised on July 23, 2023.

The basic structure of an essay always consists of an introduction , a body , and a conclusion . But for many students, the most difficult part of structuring an essay is deciding how to organize information within the body.

Table of contents

The basics of essay structure, chronological structure, compare-and-contrast structure, problems-methods-solutions structure, signposting to clarify your structure, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about essay structure.

There are two main things to keep in mind when working on your essay structure: making sure to include the right information in each part, and deciding how you’ll organize the information within the body.

Parts of an essay

The three parts that make up all essays are described in the table below.

Order of information

You’ll also have to consider how to present information within the body. There are a few general principles that can guide you here.

The first is that your argument should move from the simplest claim to the most complex . The body of a good argumentative essay often begins with simple and widely accepted claims, and then moves towards more complex and contentious ones.

For example, you might begin by describing a generally accepted philosophical concept, and then apply it to a new topic. The grounding in the general concept will allow the reader to understand your unique application of it.

The second principle is that background information should appear towards the beginning of your essay . General background is presented in the introduction. If you have additional background to present, this information will usually come at the start of the body.

The third principle is that everything in your essay should be relevant to the thesis . Ask yourself whether each piece of information advances your argument or provides necessary background. And make sure that the text clearly expresses each piece of information’s relevance.

The sections below present several organizational templates for essays: the chronological approach, the compare-and-contrast approach, and the problems-methods-solutions approach.

Prevent plagiarism. Run a free check.

The chronological approach (sometimes called the cause-and-effect approach) is probably the simplest way to structure an essay. It just means discussing events in the order in which they occurred, discussing how they are related (i.e. the cause and effect involved) as you go.

A chronological approach can be useful when your essay is about a series of events. Don’t rule out other approaches, though—even when the chronological approach is the obvious one, you might be able to bring out more with a different structure.

Explore the tabs below to see a general template and a specific example outline from an essay on the invention of the printing press.

  • Thesis statement
  • Discussion of event/period
  • Consequences
  • Importance of topic
  • Strong closing statement
  • Claim that the printing press marks the end of the Middle Ages
  • Background on the low levels of literacy before the printing press
  • Thesis statement: The invention of the printing press increased circulation of information in Europe, paving the way for the Reformation
  • High levels of illiteracy in medieval Europe
  • Literacy and thus knowledge and education were mainly the domain of religious and political elites
  • Consequence: this discouraged political and religious change
  • Invention of the printing press in 1440 by Johannes Gutenberg
  • Implications of the new technology for book production
  • Consequence: Rapid spread of the technology and the printing of the Gutenberg Bible
  • Trend for translating the Bible into vernacular languages during the years following the printing press’s invention
  • Luther’s own translation of the Bible during the Reformation
  • Consequence: The large-scale effects the Reformation would have on religion and politics
  • Summarize the history described
  • Stress the significance of the printing press to the events of this period

Essays with two or more main subjects are often structured around comparing and contrasting . For example, a literary analysis essay might compare two different texts, and an argumentative essay might compare the strengths of different arguments.

There are two main ways of structuring a compare-and-contrast essay: the alternating method, and the block method.

Alternating

In the alternating method, each paragraph compares your subjects in terms of a specific point of comparison. These points of comparison are therefore what defines each paragraph.

The tabs below show a general template for this structure, and a specific example for an essay comparing and contrasting distance learning with traditional classroom learning.

  • Synthesis of arguments
  • Topical relevance of distance learning in lockdown
  • Increasing prevalence of distance learning over the last decade
  • Thesis statement: While distance learning has certain advantages, it introduces multiple new accessibility issues that must be addressed for it to be as effective as classroom learning
  • Classroom learning: Ease of identifying difficulties and privately discussing them
  • Distance learning: Difficulty of noticing and unobtrusively helping
  • Classroom learning: Difficulties accessing the classroom (disability, distance travelled from home)
  • Distance learning: Difficulties with online work (lack of tech literacy, unreliable connection, distractions)
  • Classroom learning: Tends to encourage personal engagement among students and with teacher, more relaxed social environment
  • Distance learning: Greater ability to reach out to teacher privately
  • Sum up, emphasize that distance learning introduces more difficulties than it solves
  • Stress the importance of addressing issues with distance learning as it becomes increasingly common
  • Distance learning may prove to be the future, but it still has a long way to go

In the block method, each subject is covered all in one go, potentially across multiple paragraphs. For example, you might write two paragraphs about your first subject and then two about your second subject, making comparisons back to the first.

The tabs again show a general template, followed by another essay on distance learning, this time with the body structured in blocks.

  • Point 1 (compare)
  • Point 2 (compare)
  • Point 3 (compare)
  • Point 4 (compare)
  • Advantages: Flexibility, accessibility
  • Disadvantages: Discomfort, challenges for those with poor internet or tech literacy
  • Advantages: Potential for teacher to discuss issues with a student in a separate private call
  • Disadvantages: Difficulty of identifying struggling students and aiding them unobtrusively, lack of personal interaction among students
  • Advantages: More accessible to those with low tech literacy, equality of all sharing one learning environment
  • Disadvantages: Students must live close enough to attend, commutes may vary, classrooms not always accessible for disabled students
  • Advantages: Ease of picking up on signs a student is struggling, more personal interaction among students
  • Disadvantages: May be harder for students to approach teacher privately in person to raise issues

An essay that concerns a specific problem (practical or theoretical) may be structured according to the problems-methods-solutions approach.

This is just what it sounds like: You define the problem, characterize a method or theory that may solve it, and finally analyze the problem, using this method or theory to arrive at a solution. If the problem is theoretical, the solution might be the analysis you present in the essay itself; otherwise, you might just present a proposed solution.

The tabs below show a template for this structure and an example outline for an essay about the problem of fake news.

  • Introduce the problem
  • Provide background
  • Describe your approach to solving it
  • Define the problem precisely
  • Describe why it’s important
  • Indicate previous approaches to the problem
  • Present your new approach, and why it’s better
  • Apply the new method or theory to the problem
  • Indicate the solution you arrive at by doing so
  • Assess (potential or actual) effectiveness of solution
  • Describe the implications
  • Problem: The growth of “fake news” online
  • Prevalence of polarized/conspiracy-focused news sources online
  • Thesis statement: Rather than attempting to stamp out online fake news through social media moderation, an effective approach to combating it must work with educational institutions to improve media literacy
  • Definition: Deliberate disinformation designed to spread virally online
  • Popularization of the term, growth of the phenomenon
  • Previous approaches: Labeling and moderation on social media platforms
  • Critique: This approach feeds conspiracies; the real solution is to improve media literacy so users can better identify fake news
  • Greater emphasis should be placed on media literacy education in schools
  • This allows people to assess news sources independently, rather than just being told which ones to trust
  • This is a long-term solution but could be highly effective
  • It would require significant organization and investment, but would equip people to judge news sources more effectively
  • Rather than trying to contain the spread of fake news, we must teach the next generation not to fall for it

In longer essays whose body is split into multiple named sections, the introduction often ends with an overview of the rest of the essay. This gives a brief description of the main idea or argument of each section.

The overview allows the reader to immediately understand what will be covered in the essay and in what order. Though it describes what  comes later in the text, it is generally written in the present tense . The following example is from a literary analysis essay on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein .

Transitions

Transition words and phrases are used throughout all good essays to link together different ideas. They help guide the reader through your text, and an essay that uses them effectively will be much easier to follow.

Various different relationships can be expressed by transition words, as shown in this example.

Because Hitler failed to respond to the British ultimatum, France and the UK declared war on Germany. Although it was an outcome the Allies had hoped to avoid, they were prepared to back up their ultimatum in order to combat the existential threat posed by the Third Reich.

Transition sentences may be included to transition between different paragraphs or sections of an essay. A good transition sentence moves the reader on to the next topic while indicating how it relates to the previous one.

… Distance learning, then, seems to improve accessibility in some ways while representing a step backwards in others.

However , considering the issue of personal interaction among students presents a different picture.

The structure of an essay is divided into an introduction that presents your topic and thesis statement , a body containing your in-depth analysis and arguments, and a conclusion wrapping up your ideas.

The structure of the body is flexible, but you should always spend some time thinking about how you can organize your essay to best serve your ideas.

An essay isn’t just a loose collection of facts and ideas. Instead, it should be centered on an overarching argument (summarized in your thesis statement ) that every part of the essay relates to.

The way you structure your essay is crucial to presenting your argument coherently. A well-structured essay helps your reader follow the logic of your ideas and understand your overall point.

Comparisons in essays are generally structured in one of two ways:

  • The alternating method, where you compare your subjects side by side according to one specific aspect at a time.
  • The block method, where you cover each subject separately in its entirety.

It’s also possible to combine both methods, for example by writing a full paragraph on each of your topics and then a final paragraph contrasting the two according to a specific metric.

You should try to follow your outline as you write your essay . However, if your ideas change or it becomes clear that your structure could be better, it’s okay to depart from your essay outline . Just make sure you know why you’re doing so.

The English language has become the language of international communication. Many people living in the European Union speak English as a foreign language and use English to communicate with people from all over the world There are over 750 million people who speak English as a foreign language. In the year 2000 the British Council said that there were about a billion people learning English. These people are benefiting from the many advantages of learning English as a foreign language. Travel

Travel and tourism around the world is carried out in English. If you are planning a holiday to a foreign country you will probably be speaking English not only at the airport but also in the country itself. Information exchange

One of the biggest advantages of learning English as a second language is that you will be able to discover a world of information. English is the language of the internet world. If you are learning English as a foreign language you will be able to send e-mails to people in English from all over the world. These are only a few advantages of learning English as a foreign language. Why not take a language course with inlingua Malta and experience these advantages yourself!

1. Business * English is the primary language of business throughout the world. Most international business transactions, including emails, memos, reports and contracts, are written in English. Employment Opportunities

* The ability to fluently speak the English language in addition to your native language can be beneficial if you’re seeking job opportunities with international companies. The ability to speak a language spoken by most business people can place you a step ahead of the competition. Movies

* Major Hollywood movies have dialogue in English. The plot of these movies is easier to follow if the person watching the movie speaks English. Subtitles in other languages can sometimes cause the meanings of words to be lost in the translation, and they can be a distraction or even block the action taking place on the screen. Travel

* The English language is predominantly spoken throughout the world, so international travelers may find that speaking English can make their travels a little easier. Most hotel and restaurant employees, as well as store merchants, probably speak English to some degree. Schools

Jeanne Baird is a freelance writer with a decade of experience as a proofreader, editor and writer. She has been the associate editor for an engineering society handbook and a project manager for an independent publishing company. Baird also has edited business and entertainment news from several international newswires.

English is the primary language of business throughout the world. The English language is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, second only to Mandarin. That English is used almost everywhere is only one of the many advantages of learning the language.

Learning English can also help you to meet new people. You can practice your English with someone who is also learning. Another option is to do a sort of “trade-off” in your language practicing. For example, if you speak Spanish and are learning English, you might practice speaking with someone who speaks English and wants to learn Spanish. It can be a fun way to get practice and learn to speak in a more natural way. There are also numerous opportunities to teach English as a second language, which can be a great way to travel and see the world. Traveling to a foreign country is another great way to practice your language skills, but it also makes for a less stressful experience when you have some knowledge of the spoken language. Because English is a first language for many countries including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland, among others, many other foreign countries teach English as a requirement in schools.

It is estimated that over a billion people in the world speak English on at least a basic level. Learning English presents many new opportunities that you may not have had before, so if you have the time and the motivation, it can be a very rewarding experience. There are numerous benefits to learning English as a foreign language. English is now the language of global business, or the lingua franca. This means that in the international business community, English is used for communication by people who do not speak the same language. English is generally considered to be second only to Mandarin Chinese in the number of people who speak the language. It is, however, impossible to know at any given time how many English speakers there are in the world, or how many people are currently learning English. Estimates are quite high. There are many classes offered in learning English as a second language at universities, schools and community learning centers. Some are even free, so it is a great idea to take advantage of the opportunity.

Depending on where you live in the world, you may be educated in American English or British English. American English is the language spoken in the United States, whereas British English is the language spoken in the United Kingdom. The languages are quite similar, though there are naturally different words, dialects and accents found in each. Learning English can broaden your employment opportunities. People who speak two or more languages are ideal candidates for jobs in travel, international business, or translation. People who work with the general public, such as those who work in hospitals or in law enforcement, are often encouraged to speak a second language to better improve communication when it is most vital. 1. The main benefit a person gains when committing to learn English or any language is the ability to communicate with the language itself and create connections with a wider range of the world’s population. 2. The brain benefits from language learning by undergoing a change in electrical activity.

Before this study it was believed this change in brain functioning only occurred when students had obtained a high level of language ability in the new language, but this study revealed this change may occur at the earliest stages of language learning. 3. Another benefit of language learning is a “superior memory function.” Language learning showed an increase in memory capacities, this was especially strong in short-term memory. This is a huge benefit because it allows the brain to keep information in the brain for longer durations while thinking processes are activated. 4. The brain also benefits from language learning by gaining increased mental flexibility. The article explains this keeps mental path ways “opened up” which allows a person to use “differing avenues for thought.” Language learning helps “exercise” the brain to keep it flexible and agile. 5. A person also benefits from language learning by gaining increased problem-solving abilities in all of the following areas: abstract thinking skills, concept formation, creative hypothesis formulation, strengthened capacity to identify, understand and solve problems; the ability to focus on a task by filtering out distractions and extraneous information and an increase in multi-tasking ability. 6. Language acquisition also benefits a person by creating a greater comprehension for how language works and is used.

The study found individuals with multilingual communication were able to better read and interpret social situations, which improved their performance in social settings. 7. Learning multiple languages also helps prevent the deterioration of brain functioning over time. The study reports that individuals who were multilingual had a decreased rate of 2 to 4 years in the development of age-related cognitive problems such as dementia. 8. The culmination of all these advantages results in one last benefit: an increased ability in digital literacy. Because of these quickened mental abilities individuals which are multilingual have a noticeable ability to stay up to date with modern technologies. Reading about this benefit reminded me of this quote: “Our intelligence tends to produce technological and social change at a rate faster than our institutions and emotions can cope with…

We therefore find ourselves continually trying to accommodate new realities within inappropriate existing institutions, and trying to think about those new realities in traditional but sometimes dangerously irrelevant terms.” (War: The Lethal Custom, p. 441). Clearly having increased mental agility due to language acquisition helps the average language learners better stay adrift all of the technological and informational changes constantly evolving in today’s world. * Travel – As we know that English is an international language, which is spoken by a majority of population in the world. So you do not have to worry about being totally misunderstood when you visit a new place or country. * Study – Most of the books and instructions are written in English. Almost every subject such as Science, Math, History, Geography and others are all taught in English. Learning will be much easier if you know how to speak it.

* Information – Most information provided through printed materials or from the internet are mainly written in English. If you’re able to master the language you have higher opportunity to learn more. Studies indicate that more than 80% of the webpages are written in English. Imagine the loss of valuable information you will be missing if you don’t know to speak or write English. * Communication – More than a billion people around the world speak English language. Most of the international conferences, seminars and trainings are in English. The language is considered to be an international medium of communication. * Entertainment – Most of the time, good movies and theater plays use the English language. So if you know the language you’ll be able to appreciate them even more.

How Fraudsters Break Into Social Security Accounts and Steal Benefits

Thousands of people receiving Social Security benefits have had their money diverted into criminal accounts. Here’s what to know.

A building in the distance with a shadowed figure walking nearby.

By Tara Siegel Bernard

For the past two decades, Liz Birenbaum’s 88-year-old mother, Marge, has received her Social Security check on the second Wednesday of each month. It’s her sole source of income, which pays for her room at a long-term care center, where she landed last October after having a stroke.

When the deposit didn’t arrive in January, they logged into Marge’s Social Security account , where they found some startling clues: the last four digits of a bank account number that didn’t match her own, at a bank they didn’t recognize.

“Someone had gotten in,” said Ms. Birenbaum, of Chappaqua, N.Y. “Then I hit a panic button.”

It quickly became evident that a fraudster had redirected the $2,452 benefit to an unknown Citibank account. Marge, who lives in Minnesota, had never banked there. (Ms. Birenbaum requested to refer to her mother by her first name only to protect her from future fraud.)

Ms. Birenbaum immediately started making calls to set things right. When she finally connected with a Social Security representative from a local office in a Bloomington, Minn., the rep casually mentioned that this happens “all the time.”

“I was stunned,” Ms. Birenbaum said.

Social Security -related scams, overall, are pervasive — fraudsters pose as employees to try to extract both money and valuable identifying details from people in a variety of evolving schemes . But this particular fraud — where criminals use stolen personal information to break into online Social Security accounts or create new ones, and divert benefits elsewhere — has plagued people for more than a decade .

Once fraudsters gain access to an individual’s online Social Security account, they can change a beneficiary’s address and direct deposit information, or request replacement cards.

Nearly everyone is a potential target. The Social Security Administration sends checks to more than 70 million beneficiaries, including retirees and disabled people, totaling nearly $120 billion every month. An estimated 2,000 beneficiaries had their direct deposits redirected last year, according to anti-fraud officials at the Social Security Administration.

It can be a lucrative fraud, and a devastating benefit to lose. An estimated $33.5 million in benefits — intended for nearly 21,000 beneficiaries — were redirected in a five-year period ending in May 2018, according to the most recent audit from the Office of the Inspector General, an independent group responsible for overseeing investigations and audits at the agency. Another $23.9 million in fraudulent redirects were prevented before they happened over the same time period.

“Fraudsters were able to obtain sufficient information about a true beneficiary to convince the Social Security Administration that they were that beneficiary,” said Jeffrey Brown, a deputy assistant inspector general at the Office of the Inspector General , who analyzed the issue in 2019 . “Once they were in the front door, they were able to change their direct deposits.”

Social Security-related scams spiked during the pandemic, according to O.I.G. officials, when Social Security offices were closed to the public, forcing people to rely on the agency’s online services.

The Federal Trade Commission, which collects self-reported complaints from consumers, said more than 7,600 people reported that their benefits had been diverted from 2019 through the end of 2023, with an uptick in activity last year.

“A lot of consumers are letting us know they found out that their direct deposit was redirected to another account or a fraudulent account,” said Maria Mayo, associate director of the F.T.C.’s division of consumer response and operations. “A lot of times they are saying they got an impostor call and they provided their information, and they believe that is how that information was used to redirect the benefit.”

In another twist, there were roughly 6,100 fraudulent claims last year, or 0.3 percent of all web-initiated retirement claims, that involved criminals who filed for benefits on the earnings records of Americans who had reached retirement age, but had not yet claimed benefits, anti-fraud officials at Social Security said.

Criminals collect the personal identifying information they need in any number of ways, which they later use to break into government accounts or create fraudulent ones. You need a Social Security number to establish an online account with the agency, but you don’t need the entire nine-digits to crack open an existing one.

Amy Nofziger, director of fraud victim support at AARP Fraud Watch Network, recently scanned through her database of cases and came across a handful of victims who had a third-party snag their Social Security number within the past six months. One unsuspecting person gave it to an impostor promising insurance subsidies. Another criminal posed as a representative of the victim’s bank. In yet another case, the fraudster pretended to be calling from a credit bureau to verify the victim’s Social Security number.

Sometimes identity thieves claim they’re calling from a doctor’s office, and in other instances they’re able to compromise a person’s device and collect valuable information, such as passwords or other personal details saved.

When gathering various pieces of a person’s identity, fraudsters may also turn to marketplaces on the dark web, where much personal identifying information — often stolen through security breaches — is for sale.

Pam Dixon, executive director of the World Privacy Forum, a research group focused on data governance and protection, said people living in medical or assisted living facilities were also often vulnerable to these crimes. “It is among the ugliest forms of identity theft,” she added.

Just months before Marge’s benefits were redirected, the O.I.G. issued a report that said the administration’s portal, called my Social Security, did not fully comply with federal requirements for identity verification: It said it didn’t go far enough to verify and validate new registrants’ identities, in all cases. And once an account is established through one of two identity verification portals , which is required to access the my Social Security account, the agency does not require users to reverify their identities using strong enough proof (such as presenting a driver’s license along with, say, a selfie).

This wasn’t the first time the independent investigators found deficiencies, which date back to the introduction of the my Social Security portal in 2012. The Office of the Inspector General recommended bolstering its digital identity verification process in 2016, and while the agency has made several improvements, O.I.G. officials said it still wasn’t fully compliant when it released its latest audit in 2023.

The Social Security Administration said it had carried out several of the office’s recommendations since the portal was introduced, including the addition of a fraud analysis team for investigations. The agency has also updated its identity verification process to respond to emerging threats, it said, and plans further updates.

“Our office conducts ongoing analytics of online transactions and we look for anomalous behavior, and if we see new characteristics, we flag those and implement additional controls to stop any behavior that is potentially fraudulent,” said Joe Lopez, assistant deputy commissioner for analytics, review and oversight at Social Security.

“The environment is always developing,” he added, “and we modify our models as needed.”

The Social Security Administration sends notices to beneficiaries through the mail asking them to contact the agency if they didn’t authorize a recent change to their direct deposit information, which has thwarted millions of dollars in benefits from being diverted and lost, O.I.G. officials said. It is also possible to block changes to the accounts.

The issue would have been impossible for someone like Marge to rectify on her own. It was challenging enough for Ms. Birenbaum, a marketing consultant, and her brother, based near their mother in a Minneapolis suburb, who worked together to recover the benefits and secure Marge’s account.

Ms. Birenbaum — who reported the crime to the O.I.G. and the F.B.I. and alerted her state and federal representatives — once spent two and a half hours on hold with the Social Security Administration before connecting with a regional case worker. The rep was able to see that her mother’s direct deposit information had been altered in early December, the month before the benefits vanished.

Ms. Birenbaum’s brother visited their mother’s local Social Security office and became Marge’s “ representative payee ,” which allows him to handle her affairs (Social Security does not accept powers of attorney). They had to find ways to make the correction without bringing Marge to the office, which Ms. Birenbaum said would have been a “herculean task.”

Marge received the missing money on March 1, about a month and a half after they discovered the problem.

“For her, it ended on a happy note,” Ms. Birenbaum said, “but for many, who don’t have advocates pushing every day, cybercriminals win.”

How to Protect Yourself From Social Security Fraud

Consider locking down your accounts. Create a my Social Security account , but then add an e-services block , a feature that prevents anyone, including you, from seeing or changing your personal information online. You will need to contact your local office to remove it.

Another feature, a direct deposit fraud prevention block, stops anyone from enrolling in direct deposit, or changing your address or direct deposit information through your online account or a financial institution. You must contact a local office to make any changes or to remove the block.

Don’t trust, also verify. If your phone’s caller identification says “Social Security Administration,” don’t trust it — the number may be spoofed and the agency only calls beneficiaries in limited situations. Call back the agency through its mainline 1-800-772-1213 or call a local site using its office locator .

Report suspected scams and fraud to the Office of Inspector General’s website or call 1-800-269-0271.

Contact the Federal Trade Commission if you suspect someone has used your personal information, either through its website or calling 1-877-IDTHEFT (1-877-438-4338).

Review the Social Security Administration’s resource page on how to spot scams.

An earlier version of this article misstated the amount of money the Social Security Administration sends to beneficiaries every month. It is nearly $120 billion, not nearly $120 million.

How the internet—and Stephen Colbert—hounded Kate Middleton into revealing her diagnosis

Kate Middleton

Updated at 4:04 p.m ET on March 22, 2024

For many years, the most-complained-about cover of the British satirical magazine Private Eye was the one it published in the week after the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1997. At the time, many people in Britain were loudly revolted by the tabloid newspapers that had hounded Diana after her divorce from Charles, and by the paparazzi whose quest for profitable pictures of the princess ended in an underpass in Paris.

Under the headline “Media to Blame,” the Eye cover carried a photograph of a crowd outside Buckingham Palace, with three speech bubbles. The first was: “The papers are a disgrace.” The next two said: “Yeah, I couldn’t get one anywhere” and “Borrow mine, it’s got a picture of the car.” People were furious. Sacks of angry, defensive mail arrived for days afterward, and several outlets withdrew the magazine from sale. (I am an Eye contributor, and these events have passed into office legend.) But with the benefit of hindsight, the implication was accurate: Intruding on the private lives of the royals is close to a British tradition. We Britons might have the occasional fit of remorse, but that doesn’t stop us. And now, because of the internet, everyone else can join in too.

Read: Just asking questions about Kate Middleton

That cover instantly sprang to mind when, earlier today, the current Princess of Wales announced that she has cancer. In a video recorded on Wednesday in Windsor, the former Kate Middleton outlined her diagnosis in order to put an end to weeks of speculation, largely incubated online but amplified and echoed by mainstream media outlets, about the state of her health and marriage.

Kate has effectively been bullied into this statement, because the alternative—a wildfire of gossip and conspiracy theories—was worse. So please, let’s not immediately switch into maudlin recriminations about how this happened. It happened because people felt they had the right to know Kate’s private medical information. The culprits may include three staff members at the London hospital that treated her, who have been accused of accessing her medical records, perhaps driven by the same curiosity that has lit up my WhatsApp inbox for weeks. Everyone hates the tabloid papers, until they become them.

In her statement, Kate said that after her abdominal surgery earlier in the year, which the press was told at the time was “planned”—a word designed to minimize its seriousness—later tests revealed an unspecified cancer. She is now undergoing “preventative chemotherapy,” but has not revealed the progression of the disease, or her exact prognosis. “I am well,” she said, promising that she is getting stronger every day. “I hope you will understand that as a family, we now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment.”

This news will surely make many people feel bad. The massive online guessing game about the reasons for Kate’s invisibility seems far less fun now. Stephen Colbert’s “spilling the tea” monologue , which declared open season on the princess’s marriage, should probably be quietly interred somewhere. The sad simplicity of today’s statement, filmed on a bench with Kate in casual jeans and a striped sweater, certainly gave me pause. She mentioned the difficulty of having to “process” the news, as well as explaining her condition to her three young children in terms they could understand. The reference to the importance of “having William by my side” was pointed, given how much of the speculation has gleefully dwelt on the possibility that she was leaving him or vice versa.

Read: The eternal scrutiny of Kate Middleton

However, the statement also reveals that the online commentators who suggested that the royal household was keeping something from the public weren’t entirely wrong. Kate’s condition was described as noncancerous when her break from public life was announced in late January . The updated diagnosis appears to have been delivered in February, around the time her husband, Prince William, abruptly pulled out of speaking at a memorial service for the former king of Greece. Today’s statement represents a failure of Kensington Palace to control the narrative: first, by publishing a photograph of Kate and her children that was so obviously edited that photo agencies retracted it, and second, by giving its implicit permission for the publication of a grainy video of the couple shopping in Windsor over the weekend. Neither of those decisions quenched the inferno raging online—in fact, they fed it.

Some will say that Kate has finally done what she should have done much earlier: directly address the rumors in an official video, rather than drip-feed images that raised more questions than they answered. King Charles III has taken a different approach to his own (also unspecified) cancer, allowing footage to be filmed of him working from home. But then again, Kate has cancer at 42, is having chemo, and has three young children. Do you really have it in you to grade her media strategy and find it wanting?

Ironically, Britain’s tabloid papers have shown remarkable restraint; as I wrote earlier this month , they declined to publish the first paparazzi pictures of Kate taken after her withdrawal from public life. They have weighted their decisions toward respect and dignity—more so than the Meghan stans, royal tea-spillers, and KateGate theorists, who have generated such an unstoppable wave of interest in this story that its final destination was a woman with cancer being forced to reveal her diagnosis. If you ever wanted proof that the “mainstream media” are less powerful than ever before, this video of Kate Middleton sitting on a bench is it.

Rochester, NY — U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross announced today that Melanie Armstrong of Rochester, NY, pleaded guilty before U.S. Magistrate Judge Marian W. Payson to wire fraud involving national emergency benefits, filing false claims against a government agency, and transfer of a means of identification. The charges carry a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison and a $1,000,000 fine.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Katelyn M. Hartford, who is handling the case, stated that between July 2020, and August 2021, Armstrong falsely applied for New York State Department of Labor unemployment benefits under the identities of others and fraudulently collected benefits in their names. Armstrong also collected unemployment benefits in her own name by falsely representing that she had no source of income. Armstrong received $131,400.10 in benefits that she was not lawfully entitled to receive. Armstrong also applied for, but did not receive, additional benefits, resulting in a total intended loss of $250,916.

In addition, between January 2019, and April 2023, Armstrong filed 19 false income tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service for herself, and family members and associates, claiming false and inflated wages and false and inflated federal income tax withholdings. As a result, the IRS issued tax refunds to Armstrong and the others totaling $101,255. Between January 2020, and April 2023, Armstrong also filed 17 false tax returns for herself, and family members and associates, with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, claiming false and inflated wages and false and inflated state income tax withholdings. Armstrong attempted to obtain $45,363 in fraudulent refunds, but actually received $18,758 in fraudulent refunds.

The plea is the result of an investigation by the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation (CI), under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Thomas M. Fattorusso, the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Inspector General, under the direction of Jonathan Mellone, Special Agent-in-Charge, Northeast Region, and the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, under the direction of Acting Commissioner Amanda Hiller.

Sentencing will be scheduled a later date.

CI is the criminal investigative arm of the IRS, responsible for conducting financial crime investigations, including tax fraud, narcotics trafficking, money-laundering, public corruption, healthcare fraud, identity theft and more. CI special agents are the only federal law enforcement agents with investigative jurisdiction over violations of the Internal Revenue Code, obtaining a more than a 90 percent federal conviction rate. The agency has 20 field offices located across the U.S. and 12 attaché posts abroad.
