What Is a Cover Letter and Why Is It Important?

A cover letter is a brief letter of introduction that usually accompanies a resume. It provides you with an extra opportunity to introduce yourself, highlight your skills, accomplishments, and goals, and explain what you hope to bring to the company if hired.

One key benefit to a cover letter is the ability to elaborate on your skills and experiences in a way that may not be as easily conveyed in the typical bullet-point format of a resume .

Parts of a Medical Technologist Cover Letter

Medical technologists are employed by independent laboratories or hospitals. Some of their responsibilities include testing blood and other samples from patients, which means they need to have strong technical skills and be competent in using complex equipment to produce accurate test results.

Other activities they’re responsible for include preparing cultures, generating lab reports, operating and maintaining the equipment, examining samples under a microscope, and sending results back to physicians.

Whether the cover letter is intended for an entry-level position , college application , internship , promotion, or full career change , the key parts to a standard cover letter that you need to include are:

Your contact information

The organization’s information

Dear [Manager Name],

First paragraph: intent and opening hook

Second paragraph: main body with key skills and accomplishments in relation to the job requirements

Third paragraph: closing lines with a compelling call to action

Best regards, followed by name and title

You’re limited to only one page to grab a hiring manager’s attention, so every sentence has to count. If you need help making sure your cover letter looks professional with a clean layout, browse free cover letter templates or Google Docs resume templates for a bit of inspiration.

It’s essential to include the basic contact information for both you and the company to which you are applying at the top of the letter so a hiring manager can easily contact you.

If possible, address your cover letter to the hiring manager by name. If you don’t know the hiring manager’s name , use a gender-neutral greeting such as “Dear [Company Name] Recruitment Manager.”

You definitely aren’t going to score any originality points by starting your letter with “Dear Sir or Madam” or “To whom it may concern.” The impersonal greeting feels generic, and even worse, it may result in a hiring manager suspecting that you might be sending a mass cover letter to multiple employers without taking the time to personalize each one -- not a great first impression.

While a neutral “Dear Hiring Manager” or similar phrase is acceptable in place of a name, consider mentioning the company and/or department to make it a little more personalized.

The beginning of your cover letter needs to grab attention immediately. Announce your application to the position, then follow with an impactful accomplishment. Numbers are eye-catching, so if possible, quantify your achievement with statistics, percentages, or dollar amounts.

Jane Doe Medical Technologist 9876 Home Avenue Sample, NC 27010 123-867-5309 [email protected] linkedin.com/in/janedoe March 10, 2021 John Smith Recruitment Manager Nu Company 5432 Bustle Street Commerce, CA 94108 Dear Mr. Smith, I am applying for the Medical Technologist position at Nu Company. With over three years of experience as a technologist at Old Pharmacy, I maintained a 100% error-free record and spearheaded the lab’s reorganization to improve efficiency by more than 40% as old equipment was updated. I believe a position at Big Global Company is the right choice for my skill set, experience, and career goals.

Note that instead of relying on market buzzwords and empty, generic claims, the applicant in the example used specific growth measurements. This is a proven technique that’s much more likely to make a recruitment manager want to keep reading.

Medical Technologist Cover Letter Body

Now that you’ve successfully captured a hiring manager’s attention, it’s time to prove that you’re the ideal candidate for the position. The cover letter body should explain:

Why you want this job

The skills that qualify you for the specific requirements of the job

Why you are the perfect fit for the position

Many applicants drop the ball here by listing general skills and accomplishments that have nothing to do with the job requirements. Instead of falling into that trap, you need to prove that you have thoroughly researched the position and fully understand what’s expected of you, then directly correlate your skills to the company’s exact needs.

My primary goal is to optimize the company’s processes for maximum efficiency with minimal waste, and I’m especially interested in the culture, innovation, and potential for future development with Nu Company. Your job listing specifies that you’re searching for a candidate who is efficient, detailed, and skilled at improving outdated procedures. My track record at Old Pharmacy proves that I have those necessary skills: Efficiency: After a thorough analysis of the company’s longtime practices, I incorporated a new filing system to increase overall efficiency and reduce inventory waste Detail: Successfully generated reports with a 0% margin of error for both basic and complex testing in hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, microbiology, immunohematology, histology, and serology Update procedures: Performed an in-depth efficiency analysis and proposed the most cost-effective equipment upgrades and reorganization recommendations to drastically improve the lab’s overall efficiency

Note that the applicant has not only demonstrated a clear understanding of what is expected in the job description , but also breaks down her exact qualifications to meet every requirement in a concise, easy-to-read format.

Medical Technologist Cover Letter Closing Lines

Now that you’ve made your case with the primary pitch, it’s important to keep up the momentum and tie it all together with a strong closing. The ending may not seem as relevant compared to the rest of the letter, but if you want to earn that phone call for an interview , you need to leave a lasting final impression.

That being said, be cautious about stretching your closing remarks out and losing your effectiveness. You’ve already made your main points; now connect everything with a quick recap and optimistic closing to remind the hiring manager why you are the perfect candidate for the job .

I look forward to discussing how my interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills can translate to an improved experience for your patients and a more efficient process for your team. Best regards, Jane Doe Medical Technologist 123-867-5309 [email protected]

Note that the applicant didn’t drop a short “Thanks for your time” and leave her strong pitch hanging. She wrapped up her closing in a summary that demonstrates her knowledge, enthusiasm, and desire for the company’s success.

Example of a Medical Technologist Cover Letter

Putting all the parts together illustrates how the ideal cover letter should start with an attention-grabber right off the bat and keep that same level of energy and competency throughout the entire pitch.

Tips for a Medical Technologist Cover Letter

Be sure there aren’t any typos or errors. Have friends and family look over it — the more eyes, the better. Accuracy is a critical trait in a medical technologist since the responsibility of accurate testing is so important.

If you didn’t bother to proofread your cover letter, why would an employer trust you to be meticulous about a patient’s test results?

Use confident language. Instead of using timid words and phrases like “might have” or “possibly” to undermine your skills, choose absolute phrases like “I do have” or “I am confident that.”

Put numbers to the facts. Citing quantifiable achievements will make a bigger impact. For example, instead of saying, “I helped my previous company grow its annual revenue,” provide a specific number: “I facilitated an annual 30% growth increase.”

Highlight your domain knowledge . This type of job typically requires specific software skills, so make sure those skills are highlighted in your resume and mentioned in your cover letter if possible. List any relevant work experience to build your credibility, including contract work .

Final Thoughts

A thoughtful, carefully constructed cover letter can make a world of difference. At the very least, it shows that you’re willing to put in extra work for the job in comparison to a candidate who didn’t bother to write a cover letter if it was optional.

Instead of dreading writing a cover letter, think of it as an opportunity. It may seem like a daunting task, but if you follow the proven formula and take it step by step, it will all come together and help you make the best pitch possible for your dream job.

Tips to write a memorable Medical Technologist cover letter

According to 83% of hiring managers, cover letters are an important part of every recruiter’s decision-making process.

What’s more, 72% of them will expect you to hand in a great cover letter, even if this part is listed as ‘optional’ on the job advert.

And if you ask our experts, cover letters are an amazing opportunity to tell a personal story and make the right first impression.

But what exactly is a cover letter and how to write a good one? Let’s see

medical technologist coverletter.png

The secret to making your Medical Technologist cover letter remarkable is to share your excitement about the company, the field, and the position.

It’s also a good idea to aim not to re-write your resume, but rather to build upon it and expand on your competencies.

Now, let's look at some other things that will make recruiters remember you.

Choose the right salutation and craft a strong introduction

It’s always better to address your cover letter to a specific person. This shows that you’ve taken the time to research who the hiring manager might be and that you’re attentive to detail.

However, in case you don’t know the recruiter’s name, you can go for traditional gender-neutral salutations.

Here are some of our suggestions:

  • To the Human Resources Department,
  • Dear [company name] Recruiter,
  • Dear Angela Stone,
  • To the Recruitment Team

The introduction of your Medical Technologist cover letter is what will get you remembered. But how can you make sure that your opening line is good enough?

Rumor has it, many people out there have started using phrases like “I found your job advert on website X and decided to apply” ever more often. But more importantly – that recruiters are already getting tired of it.

So instead of saying what everyone else is saying, we advise you to go for a more honest approach. Begin your cover letter by explaining what excites you about the company and how this excitement will help you on your journey towards success.

Focus on your soft skills but don't forget about the hard skills too

So what skills do you need to include? Well, unfortunately, there’s no one answer to this. It all depends on the job description and the skills you’ve currently got.

According to experts, what recruiters look for in cover letters is how you can link your soft skills to particular achievements and goals. So, try to figure out what has helped you on the way to success.

However, don’t forget about hard skills. Even if they’re not the focus of your happy story, you need to include at least the ones that were mentioned as part of the requirements section of the job posting. This will help you pass applicant tracking systems (ATS) that screen applicant documents for certain keywords and phrases.

Prove your passion about the company

Proving that you’re familiar with the company is a great way to win the recruiter’s heart. It shows that you’ve taken some time for research and that you’re attentive to detail.

What’s more, it will also help you find out the issues at hand. This way, you can link your own skills and qualifications to some potential challenges the company might have to deal with in the future.

End on a positive note."

Ending your cover letter in an actionable way is one of the things that increase your chances of getting a callback.

The conclusion is also your opportunity to thank the recruiter for their time and consideration, so don’t skip that.

Just make sure to go for an ending that matches the company culture and language. If you prefer to be on the safe side, choose traditional closing lines such as “Looking forward to your reply”.

The best way to start a Medical Technologist cover letter is by addressing the hiring manager directly, if their name is known. Then, introduce yourself and state the position you're applying for. Immediately highlight your most relevant skills and experiences that make you a strong candidate for the role. For instance, you could say, "As a certified Medical Technologist with over five years of experience in performing complex testing and analyzing results, I am excited to apply for the Medical Technologist position at your esteemed hospital." This approach grabs the reader's attention and shows your enthusiasm for the role.

Medical Technologists should end a cover letter by summarizing their interest in the position and their qualifications. They should also express enthusiasm for the opportunity to contribute to the organization. For example, "I am excited about the opportunity to bring my specialized skills in laboratory technology and my commitment to patient care to your team. I am confident that my experience and passion make me a strong candidate for this position." It's also important to thank the reader for their time and consideration, and express a desire for further discussion. For example, "Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the possibility of discussing my candidacy further." Finally, end with a professional closing, such as "Sincerely" or "Best regards," followed by your full name. Remember to keep the tone professional and enthusiastic throughout.

A Medical Technologist's cover letter should ideally be about one page in length. This is because hiring managers often have to go through numerous applications and a concise, one-page cover letter ensures that your key points are easily digestible. In terms of word count, aim for around 250 to 400 words. This length allows you to clearly articulate your skills, experiences, and interest in the position without overwhelming the reader. Remember, the purpose of the cover letter is to provide a snapshot of your qualifications and to entice the hiring manager to read your resume for more details.

Writing a cover letter with no experience as a Medical Technologist can seem challenging, but it's definitely possible. Here's how you can approach it: 1. Start with a Professional Greeting: Address the hiring manager by their name if it's available. If not, use a general professional greeting. 2. Opening Paragraph: Start by mentioning the job you're applying for and where you found the job listing. Express your enthusiasm for the role. 3. Highlight Relevant Skills and Education: Even if you don't have direct experience, you can still highlight relevant skills and education. If you've completed a degree or certification in medical technology or a related field, be sure to mention it. Also, highlight any coursework or projects that are relevant to the job. 4. Showcase Transferable Skills: If you've worked in other fields or roles, highlight skills that are transferable to the role of a Medical Technologist. These could include problem-solving, attention to detail, teamwork, communication, and any technical skills. 5. Mention Internships or Volunteer Work: If you've done any internships or volunteer work in a related field, be sure to mention it. This can show that you have some practical experience, even if it's not in a paid role. 6. Show Enthusiasm and Willingness to Learn: As a candidate without experience, it's important to show that you're enthusiastic about the role and willing to learn. This can make you an attractive candidate, even without direct experience. 7. Closing Paragraph: Reiterate your interest in the role and your eagerness to contribute to the team. Thank the hiring manager for considering your application. 8. Professional Closing: Close the letter with a professional sign-off like "Sincerely" or "Best regards," followed by your name. Remember to keep the letter concise and to the point, and to proofread it carefully before sending. Good luck!

Medical Laboratory Scientist Cover Letter Writing Tips

1. showcase your experience.

When applying for a job as a medical laboratory scientist, it’s important to showcase your experience and expertise. Some great ways of doing this include:

  • Providing a brief overview of a past project (or similar projects) that shows how you worked with patients and helped them achieve their goals. This will also give hiring managers an idea of the type of work they can expect from you in the future.
  • Mentioning specific metrics for improvement (e.g., decreased turnaround time, increased accuracy) and positive results that stem from your efforts as well as any awards or recognition received for achieving such results.

2. Customize your cover letter

To convince employers to hire you, customize each application by highlighting how your past experiences make you a strong candidate for the job. For example, if one of the company’s goals is to decrease turnaround time, mention how your previous experience in a laboratory setting will help you achieve this goal. If there are any specific business problems listed on their website or job description as part of their hiring process, be sure to include these issues in your cover letter when referencing why you’re a good fit for the role.

3. Show results you can bring to the table

One of the most important parts of your cover letter is highlighting what you’ve done for previous employers, and how that past experience will be valuable in this new role. This shows hiring managers that not only do you have strong experience in a laboratory setting, but also that you know how to improve a laboratory’s efficiency and accuracy.

Here are some examples of successful cover letters where candidates show their value and results:

  • Successfully completed a quality assurance project that increased accuracy of test results by 95%
  • Managed all aspects of a research study including designing experiments, analyzing data, and preparing reports
  • Successfully implemented a new software system that decreased turnaround time by 50%

4. Proofread your cover letter

Hiring managers are looking for reliable, hardworking individuals who are committed to excellence. Provide them with no reasons to doubt you by proofreading your cover letter. If it’s riddled with errors, they will assume you won’t be able to provide high-quality medical laboratory services.
