Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Sikhism, Buddhism, and Jainism are some of the significant religions in India. Each religion has its unique customs and traditions, which are an integral part of Indian culture. India also has a vast linguistic diversity, with over 22 official languages and over 1,600 dialects spoken across the country. Each language has its unique literature, music, and traditions, which add to the country’s cultural diversity.

Indian traditions are ancient and have been passed down from generation to generation. They are an essential part of Indian culture and reflect the country’s rich heritage. Indian weddings, for example, are grand affairs that last for several days and include various rituals and ceremonies. Similarly, Indian festivals such as Diwali, Holi, and Eid are celebrated with great enthusiasm and zeal across the country. These festivals are not only an occasion for celebrations but also an opportunity for people to come together and bond over their shared cultural heritage.

Traditional art forms such as dance, music, and handicrafts showcase India’s rich cultural heritage. Indian classical music is renowned worldwide for its intricate rhythms and melodies. Similarly, Indian classical dance forms such as Bharatanatyam, Kathak, and Kuchipudi are known for their grace and elegance. Indian handicrafts such as pottery, textiles, and jewelry are also unique and reflect the country’s rich cultural heritage. Each state in India has its unique handicrafts, which are a source of pride for the people of that state.

Indian cinema is also an essential part of Indian culture and has a global audience. Bollywood, as Indian cinema is popularly known, is the largest film industry in the world, producing over 1,500 films annually. Indian cinema reflects the country’s diverse culture and has contributed to the country’s soft power. Indian actors and actresses are popular worldwide, and Indian films are screened in various international film festivals.

Preserving and promoting Indian culture is important for national identity and global recognition. India’s diverse culture is a source of pride for its citizens and is celebrated worldwide. However, with globalization and modernization, there is a risk of losing traditional values and customs. It is, therefore, essential to preserve and promote Indian culture to ensure that it continues to thrive.

The Indian government has taken several initiatives to promote Indian culture, such as organizing cultural festivals, setting up cultural centers abroad, and promoting Indian cuisine and handicrafts. Various non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are also working towards the preservation of Indian culture. They organize workshops, seminars, and cultural events to raise awareness about India’s rich cultural heritage.

In conclusion, India’s diverse culture is a source of pride for all its citizens. It is a reflection of the country’s rich heritage and distinguishes India from other nations in the world. Traditional art forms, such as dance, music, and handicrafts, showcase India’s cultural diversity. It is essential to preserve and promote Indian culture to ensure that it continues to thrive and receives global recognition. By doing so, we can ensure that our culture remains our pride.

Essays about Culture and Identity: 9 Examples And Prompts

Writing essays about culture and identity will help you explore your understanding of it. Here are examples that will give you inspiration for your next essay.

Culture can refer to customs, traditions, beliefs, lifestyles, laws, artistic expressions, and other elements that cultivate the collective identity. Different cultures are established across nations, regions, communities, and social groups. They are passed on from generation to generation while others evolve or are abolished to give way to modern beliefs and systems.

While our cultural identity begins at home, it changes as we involve ourselves with other groups (friends, educational institutions, social media communities, political groups, etc.) Culture is a very relatable subject as every person is part of a culture or at least can identify with one. Because it spans broad coverage, there are several interesting cultural subjects to write about.

Our culture and identity are dynamic. This is why you may find it challenging to write about it. To spark your inspiration, check out our picks of the best culture essays.

1. Sweetness and Light by Matthew Arnolds

2. how auto-tune revolutionized the sound of popular music by simon reynolds, 3. how immigration changes language by john mcwhorter, 4. the comfort zone: growing up with charlie brown by jonathan franzen, 5. culture and identity definition by sandra graham, 6. how culture and surroundings influence identity by jeanette lucas, 7. how the food we eat reflects our culture and identity by sophia stephens, 8. identity and culture: my identity, culture, and identity by april casas, 9. how america hinders the cultural identity of their own citizens by seth luna, 1. answer the question, “who am i”, 2. causes of culture shock, 3. your thoughts on dystopia and utopia, 4. gender inequality from a global perspective, 5. the most interesting things you learned from other cultures, 6. the relationship between cultural identity and clothes, 7. describe your culture, 8. what is the importance of honoring your roots , 9. how can a person adapt to a new culture, 10. what artistic works best express your country’s culture, 11. how has social media influenced human interaction, 12. how do you protect the cultures of indigenous peoples, 13. are k-pop and k-drama sensations effectively promoting korea’s culture , 14. what is the importance of cultural diversity.

“… [A]nd when every man may say what he likes, our aspirations ought to be satisfied. But the aspirations of culture, which is the study of perfection, are not satisfied, unless what men say, when they may say what they like, is worth saying,—has good in it, and more good than bad.”

Arnolds compels a re-examination of values at a time when England is leading global industrialization and beginning to believe that greatness is founded on material progress.

The author elaborates why culture, the strive for a standard of perfection, is not merely driven by scientific passions and, more so, by materialistic affluence. As he esteems religion as “that voice of the deepest human experience” to harmonize men in establishing that ideal society, Arnolds stresses that culture is the effort to “make reason and the will of God prevail” while humanizing gained knowledge to be society’s source of “sweetness and light.”

“Few innovations in sound production have been simultaneously so reviled and so revolutionary. Epoch-defining or epoch-defacing, Auto-Tune is indisputably the sound of the 21st century so far.”

Reynolds shows how Auto-Tune has shaped a pop music genre that has cut across cultures. The article maps out the music landscape Auto-Tune created and examines its impact on the culture of song productions and the modern taste for music. While the author debunks accusations that Auto-Tune destroyed the “natural” process of creating music, he also points out that the technology earned its reverence with big thanks to society’s current custom of using technology to hide blemishes and other imperfections.

“… [T]he heavy immigration that countries like Italy are experiencing will almost certainly birth new kinds of Italian that are rich with slang, somewhat less elaborate than the standard, and… widely considered signs of linguistic deterioration, heralding a future where the “original” standard language no longer exists.”

American linguist McWhorter pacifies fears over the death of “standard” languages amid the wave of immigration to Europe. On the contrary, language is a vital expression of a culture, and for some, preserving is tantamount to upholding a cultural standard.

However, instead of seeing the rise of new “multiethnolects” such as the Black English in America and Kiezdeutsch in Germany as threats to language and culture, McWhorter sees them as a new way to communicate and better understand the social groups that forayed these new languages.

“I wonder why “cartoonish” remains such a pejorative. It took me half my life to achieve seeing my parents as cartoons. And to become more perfectly a cartoon myself: what a victory that would be.”

This essay begins with a huge fight between Franzen’s brother and father to show how the cultural generation gap sweeping the 60s has hit closer to home. This generation gap, where young adults were rejecting the elders’ old ways in pursuit of a new and better culture, will also be the reason why his family ends up drifting apart. Throughout the essay, Franzen treads this difficult phase in his youth while narrating fondly how Peanuts, a pop culture icon at the time, was his source of escape.

“…Culture is… your background… and Identity is formed where you belong to… Leopold Sedar Senghor and Shirley Geok-Lin Lim both talks about how culture and identity can impact… society…”

In this essay, Graham uses “To New York” by Senghor and “Learning To Love America” by Lim as two pieces of literature that effectively describe the role of culture and identity to traveling individuals.

The author refers to Sengho’s reminder that people can adapt but must not forget their culture even if they go to a different place or country. On the other hand, Lim discusses immigrants’ struggle to have double identities.

“Culture is something that surrounds all of us and progress to shape our lives every day… Identity is illustrated as the state of mind in which someone or something distinguishes their own character traits that lead to determining who they really are, what they represent.”

Lucas is keen on giving examples of how his culture and surroundings influence an individual’s identity. She refers to Kothari’s “If you are what you eat, then what am I?” which discusses Kothari’s search for her identity depending on what food she eats. Food defines a person’s culture and identity, so Kothari believes that eating food from different countries will change his identity.

Lucas also refers to “Down These Mean Streets” by Piri Thomas, which argues how different cultural and environmental factors affect us. Because of what we encounter, there is a possibility that we will become someone who we are not.

“What we grow is who we are. What we buy is who we are. What we eat is who we are.”

Stephens’ essay teaches its readers that the food we grow and eat defines us as a person. She explains that growing a crop and harvesting it takes a lot of effort, dedication, and patience, which mirrors our identity.

Another metaphor she used is planting rice: it takes skills and knowledge to make it grow. Cooking rice is more accessible than cultivating it – you can quickly cook rice by boiling it in water. This reflects people rich in culture and tradition but who lives simpler life.

“Every single one has their own unique identity and culture. Culture plays a big role in shaping your identity. Culture is what made me the person I am today and determines who or what I choose to associate myself with.”

Casas starts her piece by questioning who she is. In trying to learn and define who she is, she writes down and describes herself and her personality throughout the essay. Finally, she concludes that her culture is a big part of her identity, and she must understand it to understand herself.

“When it comes to these stereotypes we place on each other, a lot of the time, we succumb to the stereotypes given to us. And our cultural identity is shaped by these expectations and labels others give us. That is why negative stereotypes sometimes become true for a whole group or community.”

In this essay, Luna talks about how negative stereotyping in the United States led to moral distortion. For example, Americans are assumed to be ignorant of other countries’ cultures, making it difficult to understand other people’s cultures and lifestyles.

She believes that stereotyping can significantly affect an individual or group’s identity. She suggests Americans should improve their intellectual competence by being sensitive to other people’s cultures.

How to Write an Essay about Your Culture

write short essay about our culture and pride

Do you need to write an essay about your culture but don’t know where to start? You’ve come to the right place! I’m Constance, and I’ll show you how to write an essay about your culture. I’ll guide you step by step, and we’ll write a sample essay together. Let’s dive in.

Writing an essay about your culture includes 5 steps:

Step 1. Plan how many words you want in each paragraph.

When you know the exact number of words you need for an essay, planning the word count for each paragraph will be much easier.

For example, a 300-word essay typically consists of five paragraphs and three key elements:

  • The introductory paragraph.
  • Three body paragraphs.
  • The conclusion, or the concluding paragraph.

Here’s a simple way to distribute 300 words across the five paragraphs in your essay:

write short essay about our culture and pride

You’ll get 300 when you add up these numbers.

Step 2. Decide on what your main and supporting points will be.

First, you must take a stand, meaning you must decide on your main point. What do you really want to say about your culture? Whatever you want to say, that becomes your thesis.

For example, “My culture is very rich.” That is enough to get started. You’ll get a better idea of how to expand or tweak your thesis after the next step.

Next, divide your topic using the Power of Three to prove the point that your culture is rich using three supporting ideas.

write short essay about our culture and pride

The Power of Three effectively divides an essay’s main idea into its supporting points. It means your main idea is true because of the three reasons you will provide in the body. So, it is a three-part structure that helps produce your body paragraphs .

Let’s try it for an essay about Filipino culture!

For example, here are three supporting ideas explaining the richness of Filipino culture:

  • The Philippines has incredible food .
  • Traditional Filipino clothing reflects the country’s heritage.
  • Family values in the Philippines are essential.

Great! Now we have everything we need to write an essay about Filipino culture. We’re all set for the next step!

Step 3. Write your introductory paragraph.

Here are the key components of an introductory paragraph you need to remember in writing your essay:

write short essay about our culture and pride

Our first sentence is the introduction, which should pull our reader into the world we want to portray in our essay.

And the rest of the introductory paragraph is our thesis statement. It includes our main idea and three supporting points.

Example of an introductory paragraph about culture

“Having been colonized for centuries, the Philippines boasts a vast heritage. It has a rich culture characterized by food, clothing, and family values. Filipino culture has delicious food inherited from diverse parts of the world and periods of conquest. Traditional Filipino clothing reflects the country’s history, as well. And Filipinos prize their family values probably above all else.”

Look at how the introductory paragraph goes from a general statement to specific ideas that support our main idea.

Our introductory sentence is a general statement that serves as the opening in our essay. It briefly sets the essay’s context. Next comes the thesis statement — our main idea. Finally, we have three supporting ideas for our thesis.

Step 4. Write your essay’s body paragraphs.

Again, a 300-word essay typically has three body paragraphs containing your three supporting ideas. Here’s how to structure a body paragraph:

write short essay about our culture and pride

Looking back at our word count plan, we know that our body paragraphs should have roughly 70 words each. Remember your word plan as you write.

Body Paragraph 1

“The Philippines boasts a diverse food culture. It reflects indigenous flavors and foreign influences, such as American, Spanish, Indian, and Chinese. Whether it’s a typical or special day, Filipinos love eating these various dishes with rice, a staple. For example, rice goes well with curry, noodles, and adobo. It is also common to see various foods like pizza, pancit, lumpia, paella, (Filipino-style) sweet spaghetti, cakes, and ice cream at parties.”

As you can see, the first sentence in this body paragraph is a topic sentence . It gives context to the paragraph and briefly summarizes it.

The second sentence explains why the Philippine food culture is considered diverse.

The remaining sentences illustrate your main point (topic sentence) by providing examples, starting with rice in sentence 3.

Body Paragraph 2

“Traditional Filipino clothing reflects Philippine cultural heritage. Although Filipinos now conform to current fashion trends in their everyday lives, the traditional clothing style is often used during celebrations. The traditional fashion sense exhibits influences from indigenous tribes, Chinese immigration waves, the Spaniards, and Americans, portraying the chronology of Philippine historical events. For example, the Philippines’ national costume, the baro’t saya, is an elegant blend of Spanish and Filipino clothing styles. Even some modernized forms of clothing also display other global influences.”

Just like Body Paragraph 1, this paragraph follows the same structure outlined in the diagram. It proceeds from a general statement to more specific points :

  • The topic sentence.
  • An explanation.

Body Paragraph 3

“Family values are vital in the Philippines. The daily lives of most Filipinos revolve around close and extended family, making them known for their family-oriented lifestyle even when they’re overseas. It’s common for children to live with their parents after reaching legal age; some even stay after getting married or obtaining a job. Filipinos also cherish their extended families (aunts, uncles, grandparents, and cousins) and hanging out or celebrating significant events together.”

Once again, this paragraph follows the body paragraph structure. Now, we’re all set for the final step — the conclusion.

Step 5. Write the conclusion.

The easiest way to write a concluding paragraph for your essay on your culture is to restate your main idea and its supporting points using different words. You can even paraphrase your introduction — a time-proven method!

Let’s write the conclusion for our essay.

“Because of its history, the Philippines has a rich, diverse culture rooted in a vast heritage. Filipino cuisine is a blend of indigenous and foreign flavors. The nation’s history is reflected in its traditional clothing. And family values display a distinct Filipino trait.”

Note that this conclusion uses different words to restate the points we’ve already made, including those in the body paragraphs.

Hope this was helpful. Now go ahead and write an essay about your culture!

Author:  Elizabeth Brown

No matter where you study, composing essays of any type and complexity is a critical component in any studying program. Most likely, you have already been assigned the task to write a cultural identity essay, which is an essay that has to do a lot with your personality and cultural background. In essence, writing a cultural identity essay is fundamental for providing the reader with an understanding of who you are and which outlook you have. This may include the topics of religion, traditions, ethnicity, race, and so on. So, what shall you do to compose a winning cultural identity essay?

Cultural Identity

Cultural Identity Paper: Definitions, Goals & Topics

cultural identity essay example

Before starting off with a cultural identity essay, it is fundamental to uncover what is particular about this type of paper. First and foremost, it will be rather logical to begin with giving a general and straightforward definition of a cultural identity essay. In essence, cultural identity essay implies outlining the role of the culture in defining your outlook, shaping your personality, points of view regarding a multitude of matters, and forming your qualities and beliefs. Given a simpler definition, a cultural identity essay requires you to write about how culture has influenced your personality and yourself in general. So in this kind of essay you as a narrator need to give an understanding of who you are, which strengths you have, and what your solid life position is.

Yet, the goal of a cultural identity essay is not strictly limited to describing who you are and merely outlining your biography. Instead, this type of essay pursues specific objectives, achieving which is a perfect indicator of how high-quality your essay is. Initially, the primary goal implies outlining your cultural focus and why it makes you peculiar. For instance, if you are a french adolescent living in Canada, you may describe what is so special about it: traditions of the community, beliefs, opinions, approaches. Basically, you may talk about the principles of the society as well as its beliefs that made you become the person you are today.

So far, cultural identity is a rather broad topic, so you will likely have a multitude of fascinating ideas for your paper. For instance, some of the most attention-grabbing topics for a personal cultural identity essay are:

  • Memorable traditions of your community
  • A cultural event that has influenced your personality
  • Influential people in your community
  • Locations and places that tell a lot about your culture and identity

Cultural Identity Essay Structure

As you might have already guessed, composing an essay on cultural identity might turn out to be fascinating but somewhat challenging. Even though the spectrum of topics is rather broad, the question of how to create the most appropriate and appealing structure remains open.

Like any other kind of an academic essay, a cultural identity essay must compose of three parts: introduction, body, and concluding remarks. Let’s take a more detailed look at each of the components:

Introduction

Starting to write an essay is most likely one of the most time-consuming and mind-challenging procedures. Therefore, you can postpone writing your introduction and approach it right after you finish body paragraphs. Nevertheless, you should think of a suitable topic as well as come up with an explicit thesis. At the beginning of the introduction section, give some hints regarding the matter you are going to discuss. You have to mention your thesis statement after you have briefly guided the reader through the topic. You can also think of indicating some vital information about yourself, which is, of course, relevant to the topic you selected.

Your main body should reveal your ideas and arguments. Most likely, it will consist of 3-5 paragraphs that are more or less equal in size. What you have to keep in mind to compose a sound ‘my cultural identity essay’ is the argumentation. In particular, always remember to reveal an argument and back it up with evidence in each body paragraph. And, of course, try to stick to the topic and make sure that you answer the overall question that you stated in your topic. Besides, always keep your thesis statement in mind: make sure that none of its components is left without your attention and argumentation.

Conclusion

Finally, after you are all finished with body paragraphs and introduction, briefly summarize all the points in your final remarks section. Paraphrase what you have already revealed in the main body, and make sure you logically lead the reader to the overall argument. Indicate your cultural identity once again and draw a bottom line regarding how your culture has influenced your personality.

Best Tips For Writing Cultural Identity Essay

Writing a ‘cultural identity essay about myself’ might be somewhat challenging at first. However, you will no longer struggle if you take a couple of plain tips into consideration. Following the tips below will give you some sound and reasonable cultural identity essay ideas as well as make the writing process much more pleasant:

  • Start off by creating an outline. The reason why most students struggle with creating a cultural identity essay lies behind a weak structure. The best way to organize your ideas and let them flow logically is to come up with a helpful outline. Having a reference to build on is incredibly useful, and it allows your essay to look polished.
  • Remember to write about yourself. The task of a cultural identity essay implies not focusing on your culture per se, but to talk about how it shaped your personality. So, switch your focus to describing who you are and what your attitudes and positions are.
  • Think of the most fundamental cultural aspects. Needless to say, you first need to come up with a couple of ideas to be based upon in your paper. So, brainstorm all the possible ideas and try to decide which of them deserve the most attention. In essence, try to determine which of the aspects affected your personality the most.
  • Edit and proofread before submitting your paper. Of course, the content and the coherence of your essay’s structure play a crucial role. But the grammatical correctness matters a lot too. Even if you are a native speaker, you may still make accidental errors in the text. To avoid the situation when unintentional mistakes spoil the impression from your essay, always double check your cultural identity essay.

In this essay, I explore the profound connection I feel to my culture, celebrating the richness it brings to my life and the pride that comes with embracing the traditions that define my identity.

Quick Overview:

  • My cultural identity is deeply rooted in the rich tapestry of traditions and customs passed down through generations.
  • It serves as a constant reminder of the resilience, wisdom, and beauty encapsulated in the heritage of my ancestors.
  • Language is a vital component of my culture, serving as a bridge that connects me to the wisdom of my ancestors.
  • It is not just a means of communication but a repository of stories, poetry, and the collective wisdom of generations past.
  • Engaging in traditional practices and celebrating festivals is a joyful expression of my cultural pride.
  • These rituals not only connect me to my roots but also create a sense of community and shared identity with others who hold the same cultural threads.
  • The flavors and aromas of traditional cuisine carry the essence of my culture.
  • Every dish is a journey through history, reflecting the resourcefulness and creativity of my people, and enjoying these meals is a celebration of my cultural identity.
  • My cultural pride is not exclusive; it extends to a profound respect for diversity and inclusivity.
  • Embracing my own cultural identity does not mean excluding others; instead, it fosters an appreciation for the diverse tapestry of human experiences.

Cultural Roots and Heritage:

My cultural identity is deeply entrenched in the roots and heritage that have been nurtured over centuries. It serves as a testament to the resilience, wisdom, and beauty encapsulated in the traditions of my ancestors. The rituals, stories, and values passed down through generations are not just historical artifacts; they are living expressions of the strength and depth of my cultural heritage. This connection to my roots provides a sense of continuity and belonging, reinforcing the idea that I am a part of something much larger than myself.

Language as a Pillar of Identity:

Language is a cornerstone of my cultural identity, serving as a pillar that connects me to the wisdom of my ancestors. It goes beyond mere communication; it is a living repository of stories, poetry, and the collective wisdom of generations past. Speaking my native language is not just a means of expressing thoughts; it is an act of preserving the cultural nuances, linguistic intricacies, and unique expressions that define my identity. Language becomes a bridge that spans generations, connecting me to the voices that echo through time.

Traditional Practices and Festivals:

Engaging in traditional practices and celebrating festivals is a vibrant expression of my cultural pride. These rituals are not just ceremonies; they are threads that weave a sense of community, connecting me to others who share the same cultural heritage. Whether it’s participating in traditional dances, observing religious ceremonies, or coming together for festive celebrations, these activities create a collective identity that transcends individual experiences. They serve as reminders of shared values, forging a sense of belonging that extends beyond family to encompass a broader cultural community.

Cultural Cuisine:

The flavors and aromas of traditional cuisine carry the essence of my culture. Each dish tells a story of resourcefulness, creativity, and adaptability, reflecting the unique history and geography of my people. Sitting down to a traditional meal is not just a culinary experience; it is a celebration of cultural identity. The spices, ingredients, and cooking techniques have been handed down through generations, preserving the authenticity of each dish. In savoring these meals, I am not just nourishing my body but also honoring the culinary legacy that is an integral part of my cultural pride.

Respect for Diversity and Inclusivity:

My cultural pride is not insular or exclusionary; it is a foundation for embracing diversity and fostering inclusivity. By celebrating my own cultural identity, I develop a profound respect for the rich tapestry of human experiences. It becomes a source of strength that enables me to appreciate and learn from the cultures of others. Rather than creating barriers, my cultural pride serves as a bridge, connecting me to a global community where diverse backgrounds and traditions enrich the collective human experience. In embracing my own cultural identity, I find the capacity to celebrate the uniqueness of others with open-mindedness and empathy.

Conclusion:

In the kaleidoscope of human identity, my culture is not just a facet but the very prism through which I perceive the world. The traditions, language, practices, and cuisine that define my cultural heritage are not relics of the past; they are living expressions of resilience, wisdom, and beauty. My cultural pride is not a shield that separates me from others; it is a tapestry that weaves a sense of belonging and understanding. As I navigate the complexities of the modern world, my cultural identity remains a source of unwavering pride, grounding me in the rich history and vibrant traditions that shape my identity.

Cultural Pride and Cultural Baggage Essay

Introduction, cultural pride and cultural baggage.

This paper is based on articles that seek to bring out a contrast between the concepts of cultural pride and cultural baggage.

One of the articles that was written by Kincaid gives her experiences in England which portrays her cultural baggage as she finds it quite hard to fit in this society and to adopt a similar culture as the local people in this society. Another article, which was written by Pells, talks about the American Culture.

It is pointed out in this article that the American culture is no longer a dominant culture in the nations of the world. Globalization has enabled nations to develop cultural pride and this has contributed to the development of local cultures within nations.

Before considering the definitions for the concepts, “cultural pride” and “cultural baggage”; there is need to consider what culture is. This term can mean a large number of things and it is a concept that can be given various definitions.

Among the simplest and all-inclusive ways to consider the term “culture” is to think of it as, the whole lifestyle of a group of people. Focus can be put on the aspects of culture that are linked to the code of behavior, communication, social and business relations, and other elements decisive to nurturing understanding and awareness in the continuously growing global community.

Cultural pride is a concept that refers to being proud of your own culture as well as traditions. However, by one being proud of his or her culture, this doesn’t mean anything if that person is not able to express important aspects of his or her traditions.

Being proud of a certain ethnicity implies spreading cultural understanding to the community through leadership, willpower, devotion, and enthusiasms. On the other hand, cultural baggage is defined as the tendency for a person’s culture to saturate thinking, talking, and behavior without the person having awareness of this.

Cultural baggage turns out to be a factor at a time an individual from one culture comes across another individual from a different culture, and their interaction can interfere with their behaviors or assumptions, which are made in an unconscious way.

Cultural baggage is a thing that is carried by a person all the time and can turn out to be a burden to the person, preventing him or her from moving from one place to the other. Both cultural pride and cultural baggage have a great influence on the way people conduct themselves within a particular society.

However, there is greater possibility for the cultural baggage to have a negative influence on a person living in a new society by him being discriminated against due to the cultural differences that he carries with him.

On the other hand, cultural pride can influence one positively because one is proud of his or her culture and is able to express important aspects of his traditions. Through this, one is able to achieve his goals without any fear.

People around the world have what is referred to judgmentally by scholars as ‘cultural baggage’; the assortment of hardwired memories, beliefs, emotions, and other behaviors and patterns which give people their fundamental identities.

Human beings are the “sum total” of the cultural baggage they have which originates from their history which is complicated as well as from their customs and traditions. It also comes from the people’s experiences that they have with those around them and also from the way they treat the broader world.

This was experienced by Kincaid as indicated in her article giving her autobiography by the title “On seeing England for the first time”. When she comes across people in England, she realizes that people here and the environment are too different from where she came from following the cultural baggage she had (Kincaid, n.d).

One day while in England, Kincaid was in a train travelling with her friend who was an English woman. Before they came to England, this friend liked her so much but when they came to England, as she puts it, she no longer liked her. She did not like the views held by Kincaid of England.

Kincaid points out that she herself did not like England and her friend too did not like England. However, her friend did not like her for not liking England too (Kincaid, n.d). The friend had England as her own country but she was no longer living there because she felt it was not being kind to her and that was the reason why she left it.

In some other incident, Kincaid narrates about her experience when she went to a store to purchase a shirt for her husband in the company of the same friend. It was the same store where the shirts for the Prince of Wales were made and the shirts there were quite beautiful.

She picked one shirt she believed her husband would like very much. She also wanted to buy a nice tie for the husband only to find out that she was not able to choose from among the many beautiful ties. Following this, the salesman opted to assist her in choosing.

The salesman chose a particular set, as he pointed out, because the ties bore the crest of the Prince of Wales and the Prince had never before permitted his crest to serve as a decoration on any clothing article. The salesman stated this in a slavish, respectful and awed tone.

This infuriated Kincaid and she felt like hitting him but didn’t do that. She pointed out that herself and her husband did not like the prince and the husband would not wear anything that bore the prince’s crest. This statement stiffened both the salesman and her friend.

She states that “they both drew themselves in, away from me” (Rincaid, n.d,. p.372). Her friend stated to her that the prince was a symbol of her “Englishness” and Kincaid had a feeling that she had offended her (Kincaid, n.d). Looking at her friend, she realized that “she was an English person, the sort who was nobody in England but somebody when they came to live among people like me” (Kincaid, n.d, 373).

Considering this scenario, the concepts of cultural baggage and cultural pride come out. Kincaid is affected by her cultural baggage that she has moved with to England and finds it hard to agree with all that goes on in England.

On the other hand, her friend who is an English woman but lives outside England and has just come to visit pretends that she does no longer belong to England. However, she has a cultural baggage in her which makes her not to like the idea that her friend does not like England.

She does not like the idea that her friend together with her husband does not like the Prince of Wales and defends the prince that he is a symbol of her Englishness. By doing this, she is trying to portray her cultural pride.

Taking another case, for a larger part of the 20 th century, the dominating culture all over the world was the American culture. At the present, this is no longer the case.

It is pointed out that “what is most striking about attitudes toward the United States in other countries is not the anti-Americanism they reflect, or the disdain for former president Bush, or the opposition to American foreign policies…..rather, people abroad are increasingly indifferent to America’s culture” (Pells, 2009, p.1).

Earlier on, the American culture used to be a giant in each and every person’s living room. It did not matter whether the people were not comfortable with the omnipresent American popular culture within their nations, they still could not ignore the power it had as well as its appeal.

Such people as artists or writers from America were regarded as superstars; serving as objects of admiration, envy as well as curiosity. At the present day, these superstars are mostly unnoticed or they are considered as ordinary mortals.

The main reason why the American culture is not valued in other nations as it used to be is the growth of globalization. In the course of the 1990s, a large number of people made an assumption that the coming up of what they referred to as the “global culture”, was only another system of “Americanization” of the world.

However, instead of strengthening the American culture, it made the culture of other countries to be stronger. It is pointed out that, “instead of defining what foreigners want, America’s cultural producers find themselves competing with their counterparts abroad in shaping people’s values and tastes…what we have in the 21 st century is not a hegemonic” (Pells, 2009, p.1).

People in other nations are now taking pride in their own cultures. They are now culturally aware of their communities through leadership, determination, dedication, and passion.

Both cultural pride and cultural baggage have a great influence on the way people conduct themselves within a particular society. However, there is greater possibility for cultural baggage to have a negative influence on a person living in a new society by him being discriminated against due to the cultural differences that he carries with him.

On the other hand, cultural pride can influence one positively because one is proud of his or her culture and is able to express important aspects of his traditions.

Through this, one is able to achieve his goals without any fear. It should be realized that cultural backgrounds can serve as dividing forces and one should be careful to check on his or her cultural baggage in order to avoid being discriminated against or him discriminating against others.

Our culture our pride

Our culture our pride

Home » Blog » Our culture our pride

When I was in middle- School, our teacher used to ask us to write an essay on topics like the national animal, the national bird, the national festival and the culture of various athnic groups. In our Nepali text books, we read poems of Laxmi Prasad Devkota, and I vividly remember one of his essay that described Nepal, it resources and its culture. “4 castes with 36 sub-castes under one umbrella” used to be what I wrote in almost all of my attempts to describe Nepal. Today, I am proud that I was born to a culture that rich and living here in the U.S. has made me realize even more the diversity of our nation.

According to visitnepal.com, Nepal has over 40 different ethnic groups and tribes. From the popular and brave Sherpas of the Himalayans, to the Brahmans and Chhetris of the Kathmandu valley, and to the Tharus of the South, Nepal is composed of numerous ethnic identities. The Taute’s are another tribe of Nepal, who live the nomadic life and travel from one place to another within the western region of Nepal, I looking for shelter and food.

Today, the Kathmandu valley has become the melting pot, as it is the most developed part of the nation. While I was in Nepal during this past summer, I heard people on the streets talking in unfamiliar languages. Lot of people have migrated from the rural areas to live in the city. And the beauty of this diversity is that we are all under one common roof, and though we have different cultural identities, we are all Nepalese.

I may have not realized how much I value my culture if wasn’t away from it. In my collage, we have two functions in one academic year that are for representation of international diversity on campus. Hence, we all get so excited for the International Festival. We wear our traditional dresses, and dress in different cultural attires, just so that we can give justice to our cultural identity. When people ask us about any of our traditional practices we jump in with excitement to explain what it means, and difference in this context is highly appreciated.

If I wasn’t far away from home, I would care less about dressing in a sari for the international festival, or I would care less about wearing “Cholo and Fariya” to present myself in any international functions, coming to a foreign land has accentuated the value of my culture. This is probably because, the only way we can distinct we in this place filled with people from all parts of the world is through our culture. Our norms and traditions become our identification, and it is the need to stand out that pushes us further. So exposing the variation and diversity of our roots makes us proud to be who we are. Even though we may have not realized it when we were writing that essay in middle school for mere points, we do realize it now that in a foreign land our identity rests upon our culture and pride is what we get when we portray it exuberantly. Therefore, I can honestly say Our culture, Our Pride.

Essay on our Culture our Pride

Our Nepali Culture Is Our Pride

A long-standing tradition is called culture .  It is a sign of the ideas way of life, etc. which is being developed in the form of internal tradition of Nepalese. Nepali culture encompasses many aspects of our lives. Our culture is diverse and our country is a community in terms of culture. Our culture is the basis of our identity or pride.

our culture our pride

Different castes live in our society. Festivals are also celebrated according to different cultures. According to the tradition of the past, Nepali society is moving forward by uniting and assimilating. Nepalese of Hindu religion and culture celebrate various festivals in a grand manner. They celebrate Dashain, Tihar, Holi, Chath, ShreePanchami, Mahashivratri, Gurupurnima, Maghe Sankranti, Tirtha Aussi, New Year etc. and other small festivals with enthusiasm. It is a good practice in Hinduism to consider the Guru as a deity and to respect the elders and to give love and affection to the younger ones. The identity of our Nepali culture is the main basis. We Nepaleses have been respecting these traditional values and practices.

In today's Nepali society, there are people who believe in Buddhism, Islam and Christianity. Even those religions and cultures are being influenced by traditional Hindu religions and cultures and today Nepali culture has moved forward with cultural diversity. This cultural diversity is the identity or pride of our culture.

People of all religions living in our country wear their own style of dress. The special attire of Nepalese is Daura Suruwal, coat, hat and belt worn by men. Our Nepali women look really attractive and beautiful when women wear beautiful bodice, belts, Ear rings, red scarf on their heads and grandchildren on their cheeks. Our cultural dresses of Sherpa, Tamang, Gurung, Newar, Madhesi have their own kind of discrimination dress and languages. The national flag with the sun and the moon, the national bird, the scarecrow, and the national animal, the cow, are our pride.

From birth to death, Hindus and non-Hindus have their own customs and traditions. Here they are treated with respect and dignity. Many such rites and customs are also the basis of our own originality and identity of Nepalese.

The main thing is that today foreign culture has taken over our culture. Especially today's young men and women are falling prey to foreign lewd culture. We must also be careful to preserve our original culture, which we have inherited from our ancestors. In order to preserve the culture of our ancestors, we must all work together to advance our culture.

Our Culture is our pride Essay 100 words

India is a country with a very different population , as well as many different languages and ways of life. In the north are the icy peaks of the Himalayas, and in the north and south are thick forests and rich plains.  We have 29 states, and these states are home to many different groups of people who speak many different languages. Even within each language, there are many different ways to say things . I’d say that India is a great country that is making great strides in all areas of economic growth.

Our Culture is our pride Essay 200 words

There are many different parts to a country, and they all contribute in their own way to the country’s greatness. Culture is one of the most important things that makes a country great, so don’t underestimate its importance. Similarly, the vibrant culture of our country, India, makes a big difference in the overall health of the country. The fact that our society is political has helped India’s many different religious traditions, groups, and regions of the world live together in a way that is truly amazing.

All of these things add to the richness and scope of the Indian cultural tradition. India’s different social and economic groups all add value to their own cultural traditions to make the country culturally diverse, rich, and, most importantly, “unified . ” Even though other parts of our country have had both highs and lows in recent years, the important royal approach has stayed mostly the same for a long time. Our culture includes a lot of different kinds of art , as well as literary and interior design traditions and many different kinds of parties. Our country’s respectable place in the world is being pushed to new heights by the rich culture we have here. So, we can come to the conclusion that our culture is, without a doubt, where our pride comes from.

our culture our pride essay in 300 words

I wouldn’t have known how much I loved my culture if I hadn’t been away from it for so long. During one academic year , my university holds two events that are meant to show how many different cultures are represented on campus . So, when the International Festival is getting close, everyone gets really excited.

Simply put, we dress in a variety of ways, including our traditional clothes and other clothes with cultural meaning, to make sure that our cultural identity is properly shown. If someone asks us about one of our traditional practices, we jump right in with enthusiasm to explain what it means, and the fact that our uniqueness is being recognized in this way is something we really value.

If I didn’t live so far from home, I wouldn’t think as much about wearing a sari to an international festival or “Cholo and Fariya” to international events. But moving to a new country has made me realize more than I did before how important my background is . This is most likely because our culture is the only way we can stand out in a group of people from all over the world.

Our Culture is our pride Essa

We go beyond our customs and traditions because we want to stand out from other people. These things then become a part of who we are. So, showing how diverse and rich our ancestry is makes us feel proud of ourselves as individuals.  Even if we didn’t realize it when we were writing that essay for points in middle school, we do now: in a foreign country, our identity is based on our culture , and we feel proud when we show it off in a big way.

Even though we didn’t realize it when we were writing that essay for points in middle school, we do know that our identity in a foreign country is based on our culture. So, I can say with complete honesty that Our Culture is Where Our Pride Comes From.

Our Culture is our pride Essay 500 Words (essay on our culture our pride for class 9)

My birthplace , India, is one of the most amazing and diverse countries in the world, and I count it as one of my greatest fortunes to have been allowed to call it home . Because it is also the largest secular republic in the world, I have the opportunity to personally engage with people of a wide variety of racial and cultural backgrounds.

It is a very large country with a diverse population and a landscape that ranges from the towering Himalayas in the north to the broad Indian Ocean in the south. It is located in South Asia. It also boasts a very significant number of flora and fauna, making it home to an extremely diverse array of both. Additionally, India is well-known for the range of cuisines and spices that it produces.

There are a total of thirty-one rivers, in addition to twenty-eight states and nine union territories. India is not only the most populous democracy but also the most diverse. Diwali, Eid, Christmas, and Guru Parwa are just some of the holidays that are celebrated throughout the year in India, despite the fact that India is officially recognized as a secular nation .

India has a long history of progress in the fields of science, farming, and literature. We were light years ahead of other countries when it came to scientific progress. There has been a lot of progress in medicine, science, and technology both in the past and now. We make almost anything you can think of and export a wide range of goods, such as industrial goods, medicines, and so on. In the agricultural sector, you can find beautiful churches, mosques, and other places of worship. The Taj Mahal has been called the “eighth wonder of the world.” The Red Fort, the Charminar, and many other old buildings are also worth seeing.

We have a lot of problems, even though we have all of these things that we should be proud of. Poverty and illiteracy are common, and there is a big difference between the wealth of the rich and the rest of the population. Unemployment is another big problem that makes the gap between the population that has been cut in half and the population that has not been cut in half even bigger.

Pollution was another problem we had to deal with. Urbanization, population growth, and a higher population density all led to more pollution. Along with the smoke from factories, the smoke from cars is another source of pollution that makes a living in the city a nightmare. In addition, the nation has been endowed with illustrious historical mathematicians and distinctive works of architecture. Both Ramanujam and Aryabhata are widely renowned for their contributions to mathematics, including continuing fractions and the discovery of zero.

As a citizen of this country, I consider myself fortunate and honored to be a part of the rich cultural diversity that exists here. I have a deep appreciation for the United States of America, and one day when I’m older, I wish to be able to make a positive contribution to the nation’s.
