It is the responsibility of the student to obtain housing. There is a limited amount of on-campus housing for graduate and professional school students offered through the Duke Housing and Residence Life office for the 2022-2023 academic year. Assignment priority will be given to graduate or professional students on student visa status. Please visit  Duke HRL's website for more information about on-campus housing.

Housing, Dining, & Transportation

Housing and residence life (hrl), undergraduate housing.

Housing, Dining and Residence Life manages all aspects of the university’s three-year undergraduate residency requirement. Residential programs are designed to build positive communities that value learning, create new opportunities for faculty engagement, and generate positive social connections. HRL, student residents and others in the Duke community develop and maintain environments that support classroom learning and encourage students to seek learning opportunities in the world around them. HRL promotes opportunities for students to connect with others and develop a strong and enduring sense of belonging; and intentionally provide opportunities for students to grow and develop as they continue to negotiate developmental issues related to identity, autonomy, and responsibility. HRL programs are rooted in the concepts of mutual respect and civility, and recognize and celebrate the dignity and self-worth of all members. Duke Dining

Duke is home to one of the most innovative, dynamic, and cutting edge collegiate dining programs in the country, with access to over 50 dining locations that include 33 on-campus locations, Merchants-on-Points (off-campus restaurants that deliver), and food trucks. Find more information at students.duke.edu/living/dining .

All Duke students are issued electronic Duke University identification cards through their mobile devices. This identification should be carried at all times. DukeCards are the means of identification for library privileges, athletic events, and other university functions or services open to them as university students. Students will be expected to present their cards on request to any university official or employee. DukeCards are not transferable and fraudulent use may result in loss of student privileges or suspension. For more information, visit dukecard.duke.edu .

Parking & Transportation

Duke Parking & Transportation provides the Duke community with parking options that balance price and convenience while managing supply and demand across the parking system. A valid permit is required in all locations; most locations are gated and the permit activates the entry and exit gates. Visitors who do not have a permit pay by the hour in facilities specially set aside for them. Accommodations are also available for patrons that require accessible parking or transportation.

Options include annual permits and short-term permits that allow for flexible or occasional parking. Anyone affiliated with Duke is eligible to purchase on-campus parking in available locations. There are also many transportation options available at Duke, including Duke Transit (buses), vans, city and regional buses, private taxi service, and a ride-hailing program. Housing at Duke Law

Most Duke law students live off campus in privately owned apartment complexes. Many of the complexes have swimming pools, exercise rooms, tennis courts, clubhouses, and running trails. Two bedroom apartments tend to range in price from $600 to $1,200 per month. Furniture can be rented or purchased at a very reasonable cost. Students usually try to buy a used car for transportation in Durham and surrounding areas. Public transportation is not readily available, however, Duke provides an on-campus bus service as well as a ride-home service at night.

Students with families are especially comfortable at Duke. There are very good child care facilities, an active program for spouses at the University’s International House , and the opportunity for accompanying persons to take classes in English and other subjects at a local community college. The ease of life in the Durham area and the friendliness and hospitality of its population are quickly noted by Duke’s international students.

The Housing Assignments Office hosts and sponsors an off-campus housing website for members of the Duke community. The website is a platform for students, faculty, and staff to find and advertise rental housing. Listings include a wide variety of options including apartment communities, homes for rent, duplexes, rooms for rent, and more. The website also offers helpful resources such as roommate matching, information on how to navigate living off campus, and survey results from graduate and professional students about their off-campus living experiences.

Duke University maintains data on a number of different childcare options in the area. For more information visit Child & Family Benefits .

Juniors assigned to dorms on East Campus after returning from studying abroad

housing assignments duke

Since returning from fall semester study abroad programs, several upperclassmen have been assigned to dorms on East Campus traditionally reserved for first-year and Duke Kunshan University students.

At the start of the spring semester, 23 formerly-abroad juniors were assigned to East House, an East Campus dorm otherwise occupied by DKU students, according to Marijean Williams, director of housing assignments and planning. As of Jan. 26, only eight still resided in East House. The other students were moved to rooms on West Campus as space became available.

Such displacements are emblematic of the unique set of challenges that come with managing housing assignments for the spring semester. One of the biggest issues is predicting how many students are going to leave campus from the fall to the spring.

“It’s complicated. It’s complex,” Dean for Residence Life Deb LoBiondo said. “We know who’s graduating at the end of the semester and we know who’s leaving, but we don’t know the rest, really. So we’re constantly looking at the data, which is no easy feat.”

Williams agreed, adding that “it’s more than just the juniors returning from abroad.”

Housing and Residence Life also has to manage students on the waitlist for housing accommodations, who get priority over students returning from study abroad, as well as students returning from leaves of absence or other pursuits.

All students are put into a pool together and given a lottery number according to their class year. “We try to make the best assignments that we can, based on what their preferences are and what the space available is for us,” Williams said.

Though 23 students were originally assigned to East House, Williams noted that the priority was to enable all students who met the housing application deadline to move to West Campus as rooms became available.

“Everyone who met the deadline is in the situation that they want to be in right now,” said Williams.

Those who stayed on East Campus largely did so in order to live with their preferred roommate, which may not have been a possibility if they were moved to West Campus. The roommate issue was a “very important piece to this puzzle,” according to LoBiondo.

Junior Jax Nalley is currently living with his preferred roommate in East House. The Housing Office contacted him in December to give him the option between living with a randomly assigned roommate on West Campus or with his preferred roommate in East House.

“Both of us preferred not to live with someone random,” he wrote. “I definitely don’t think this is the most common post-abroad housing arrangement. Most people I know ended up on West Campus.”

The process of spring housing assignments was complicated this year due to the much larger number of juniors who studied abroad during the fall semester compared to those studying away during the spring semester.

"We had 600 students return from study away in the fall and only 100 leave," Williams said. "That right there, we're already imbalanced."

Additionally, the underlying trend is that more students, including juniors and seniors, want to live on campus.

“It’s the perfect storm,” Williams said. “We have a finite number of rooms that we can assign, and we’ve got more students than rooms. It’s a matter of working through all of that.”

“I think housing did a decent job,” wrote junior Sofia Hletko, who was abroad last semester and is currently an RA for juniors in East House. “It’s a tough situation having too many people and not enough spots, but from what I have heard they have moved everyone who wanted to be moved.”

Though the system isn’t perfect, Williams and LoBiondo emphasized the behind-the-scenes efforts of the Assignments office, saying that they “did everything in [their] bag of tricks to make housing assignments.” This included contacting students about swapping their randomly assigned roommates to better fulfill preferred roommate pairings.

In the future, Williams says that the office is working to be more proactive in encouraging consolidation among students living alone in double rooms, though Duke has no mandatory consolidation policy.

“There’s not much we can do with our physical buildings [to] add space,” Williams said. “... We have had a lot more interest from students to live on campus in the last two years.”

Pancakes, poetry and performances: A glimpse into Duke’s last day of classes celebration

Duke receives congressional resolution commemorating centennial, early barrage from campbell puts away no. 6 duke baseball in seven innings.

“The assignments office works really, really hard to wait until that magical double room comes open,” LoBiondo said. “... This year was way more challenging because we didn’t get the attrition that we thought we would.”

Though he said that East House is "no Shangri-La," Nalley is happy with his housing and plans to stay in East House with his roommate for the rest of the semester.

Apart from the hassle that would come from moving mid-semester, he has found a sense of community within East House. He and his roommate have started nightly ping-pong matches with their fellow junior East House residents.

“There are plenty of things that I complain about at this point in my life, but living a short bus ride away from my classes just doesn’t make the cut anymore,” Nalley wrote.

Duke Summer Experiences is an opportunity aggregator for undergraduate students. Opportunity-specific questions should be directed to the program's or opportunity's coordinator which is listed on each opportunity's individual database listing. General frequently asked student questions are outlined below. If you don't see what you are looking for, you can contact the Summer Experiences team at [email protected] .

Frequently asked student questions.

The DSE opportunities database aggregates programs and opportunities designed for undergraduate students. The eligibility requirements vary per program and are outlined at the bottom of each program’s individual database listing.

At this point, Duke Summer Experiences is mainly aggregating opportunities for Duke’s undergraduate students. However, if an opportunity does accept graduate students it is indicated on the program's profile page. Graduate students can also look for opportunities on this website:  Funding and Other Opportunities for Duke Graduate Students .

Each summer opportunity has a different due date. Please check the individual opportunity's listing for application timeline details.

Opportunities have different program dates. Most programming dates take place during the summer, but it should be noted that some programs have commitments that run into the fall and academic year. Each opportunity’s program dates are listed on their individual database listing.

Some of the opportunities listed in the Duke Summer Experiences database offer academic credit that can be applied to your Duke degree. You can determine if an opportunity offers academic credit by looking at each individual opportunity's database listing. You can also sort the database by the “credit” category found on the left side of the database search page.

For Summer 2024:

Students who are involved in a local co-curricular program or working in Durham as a research assistant, intern, etc. can apply to live on campus this summer through Conference and Event Services (CES) at the rate of $44.20/night for a double room or $55.10/night for a single room. The dates for CES housing are May 17 - July 28, 2024. Please reach out to  [email protected] with any questions.

On-campus housing is also available for students enrolled in Summer Session courses. For further summer information and a housing application, visit the  Housing and Residence Life  website or contact Housing Assignments: by phone, 919-684-4304; or email [email protected] .

Extension housing options between Spring and Summer terms 2024:

Extension housing is available to currently assigned residential students who need to remain on campus after the 12pm move-out at the end of the spring semester. Submission of the extension form does not guarantee approval. Requests will be reviewed on a rolling basis beginning mid-April. Students will be notified of their extension status within 3 days of submission. In the event your request is approved, you may be required to relocate out of your current spring assignment to a different assignment on campus. The application can be accessed through the housing portal. Please email [email protected] if you have any questions.

Extension housing options between Summer and Fall terms 2024:

Early Arrival Housing will be available for Duke students looking for housing after the end of CES Summer on July 28 th before the official move-in date for the Fall 2024 semester. The application for Early Arrival Housing will be posted on the Housing website in July 2024. Requests will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Please email [email protected] if you have any questions.

Each opportunity is different. You can determine if an opportunity has a cost to participate by looking at each individual opportunity's database listing. You can also sort the database by the “program cost” category found on the left side of the database search page.

The opportunities on Duke Summer Experiences take one of four compensation structures.

Hourly -  Students participating in an opportunity with hourly compensation can expect to be paid based on their time commitment to the program. This traditionally looks like filling out a time card or punching a time clock to track the hours worked. Opportunities with hourly compensation list their hourly rate.

Program cost covered in full -  There are no costs to participating in this program, but students might need to budget for costs not associated with the program. For example- DukeEngage's program costs are covered in full, but students would need to pay for the souvenirs purchased on the trip.

Stipend -  Stipend payments are made to support the recipient in education enrichment opportunities and where the student is not required to work for or provide any type of service for or on behalf of Duke in exchange for the payment. Stipends are also known as non-compensatory payments and may also include fellowships and grant payments. It should be noted that Duke reports all non-compensatory payments to the IRS on a Form 1099 (U.S. Citizens and residents) or Form 1042 (foreign nationals).

Unpaid -  These opportunities will not financially compensate students for their participation.

The Duke Summer Experiences team is active on Instagram at @dukeexperientialed to showcase experiential education happening across the university. We would love to promote your programs on our page and would appreciate your help in getting the word out about the DSE database. We have created a DSE Promotion Toolkit with instructions on how to submit your program information to our team and help share about DSE with others.
