Flexible and part time jobs: why teaching in further education could be a great next step

further education quality jobs

Many working parents who juggle childcare and a career might be looking for better flexibility in their working lives, and teaching in further education is one option to explore.

It’s a route that allows you to continue working in your current industry, while also enjoying a better work-life balance.

Here’s everything you need to know about teaching in further education (FE) and why it could be a great next step for your career.

What do further education teachers do?

FE teachers teach academic and vocational courses to young people and adults.

FE refers to all education options for those aged 16 and over who are not studying for an undergraduate degree, so it’s a perfect choice if you’re interested in teaching young people and adults, and you’re keen to share your industry knowledge and skills.

FE courses range from construction and engineering to law and healthcare, meaning that teachers can stay closely connected to their own industry, as they help prepare the next generation of talent for an exciting career.

Teaching in FE is varied and isn’t just restricted to the classroom. Lessons can take place in workshops, on-site, or anywhere that allows learners to get hands-on experience in their field.

How do I become a further education teacher?

If you have real world industry experience, your skills could make you a great FE teacher, and you don’t always need a prior teaching qualifications or an academic degree to get started.

Industry experience is invaluable in FE, helping to inspire and motivate the next generation of workers.

A genuine passion for your field will help you to pass on valuable knowledge and transferable skills to create a supportive learning environment for your students.

Why might teaching in further education be a good fit for working parents?

According to a recent study, over three quarters (77 percent) of working parents remain passionate about their industry, and nearly 9 in 10 (88 percent) would be interested in more part time or flexible opportunities to improve their work-life balance.

Many FE teachers work flexibly – in fact, as many as 40 percent of FE college teachers are on part-time contracts.

This makes FE teaching a good option for working parents who are looking for new, adaptable opportunities which make use of their existing industry skills.

Where can I find jobs in further education?

AoC jobs and FE jobs are a good place to begin your search for a role in FE teaching.

Alternatively, reach out to your local college to see what opportunities are available.

To find out more about how you can share your skills by teaching in FE visit this page .

A dedicated support service is also on hand to provide more information or advice on finding the perfect further education job for you:

What are the next steps?

Realising that you have the skills and expertise to become a further education teacher is the first step to getting yourself in front of your soon-to-be learners.

There are just a few more simple steps to take before you start planning your lessons.

Check you’re eligible.

No teaching qualifications or degree? No problem. To get started in many further education teaching jobs, you’ll just need industry experience in the topic you want to teach.

Find a job.

Discover what opportunities are available in your local area and find jobs that match your experience and lifestyle. Find your local colleges with our college finder, or browse the latest jobs on a dedicated jobs board.

Get started.

Once you’re ready, you can start applying for vacancies all year round. If successful, you can often start right away and join the thousands of other further education teachers across the country.

A few things to bear in mind when searching for jobs in FE

  • Further education providers are independent organisations, so they can set their own entry requirements and benefit packages.
  • Teaching vacancies within further education may sometimes be advertised as ‘FE lecturers’ or ‘tutors’, so consider looking at these roles too.
  • Providers may also refer to trades or industry areas in different ways. If you can’t find a job that matches your specific occupation, try widening your search term or contacting your local further education provider.

Where to find a job.

We’ve shortlisted some of the job sites that can be used to start your search today.

With a wide range of vacancies in different teaching environments and courses across the country, you can find the right job for you. Some of the job boards will also allow you to search for jobs by postcode.

Find your local colleges

Finding your local colleges is your first step towards a new career in further education. Use our college finder to:

  • find your nearest colleges in England
  • visit their websites to see if they are right for you
  • get in contact and apply for a job

Getting Started

What training is available.

You don’t always need a teaching qualification to start teaching in further education. Depending on your course and provider, you may be able to do funded training while you work.

This means you could get paid while completing your FE teacher training. Your employer will decide which qualification you work towards.

This may be the best approach if:

  • you want to start teaching FE soon
  • there is a suitable job available at a local college or training provider
  • you do not want to pay for teacher training yourself

If you want to train as a further education teacher before you apply for a job, then you may be able to get financial support while you train.

  • you do not want to be committed to any one provider after you qualify
  • you want to get a taste for FE before you commit to teaching

You may be able to apply for a student loan to help pay for your course fees and living expenses. Depending on your subject, you could also get a tax-free bursary. Find out more about training on the job, including student loans and bursaries, on GOV.UK .

I’m not sure whether I’d like to be a teacher, could I gain some work experience to see whether I like it?

There are many initiatives that could allow you to gain some work experience.

For example, the Education & Training Foundation (ETF) offer a free course where you can explore what it is like to be a teacher in FE. Head to the  ETF website  for more details.

You can also contact your local FE provider to find out whether they have any upcoming open days or offer work experience.

In the meantime, learn more about  what it’s like to teach in FE  from those who are actually doing it.

Where can I go for more information?

If you need more information or advice on finding the perfect further education job for you, then speak to our dedicated support team. They can help you understand:

1. Information: the technical funding guide for individualised learner record funded skills bootcamps has been published

We have published an  updated technical funding guide for Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA)-funded Skills bootcamps  for learning started from 1 August 2023.

This guidance covers:

  • the different components that make up the funding for skills bootcamps funded by ESFA through the Individualised Learner Record (ILR)
  • co-funding and how it works
  • how we use the ILR to calculate funding

Additionally, this guidance now contains information about how we calculate funding for new contracts starting in the 2023 to 2024 funding year.

For further information please  contact us via the help centre .

2. Information: accountability agreements guidance webinar

We are holding a webinar on Thursday 14 March, 9am to 10am, about the updated ESFA college  accountability agreements guidance  which now incorporates the local needs duty.    The webinar will be hosted by Department for Education (DfE) officials who will be joined by 3 volunteer colleges to share their experiences.

The format of the session will be:

1.     summary of the main changes in the guidance

2.     reflections from the two volunteer colleges

3.     question and answers

The accountability agreement sets the overall expectations of providers in return for the DfE’s funding investment. The guidance aligns and simplifies the requirements for annual accountability agreements (for further education colleges, sixth form colleges and designated institutions), and the statutory duty to review how well the education and training they provide meets local needs.

College principals and executives are invited to attend. You can register by completing our  registration form .

3. Information: off-the-job training

DfE has had several enquiries to the help portal regarding off-the-job training. The full details of off-the-job training can be found on GOV.UK but we have included some detail below.

3.1 Off-the-job training guide

The off-the-job training guide (version 5) provides additional information on the calculation (paragraphs 84-85) and additional questions and answers (e.g. around revision).

3.2 Apprenticeship training plan template

In line with the 2023 to 2024 funding rules, the notes page has been updated (e.g. around progress reviews) and there are additional checks in the commitment to programme tab (e.g. that the apprentice is not self-employed).

On the plan of training tab, statutory leave will now auto-calculate and a box has been added to record the apprentice’s normal working hours (if different to the hours used in the calculation). The formula also includes a rounding up function.

3.3 Apprenticeship agreement template

The apprenticeship agreement template notes have been simplified and it is now clear that that the agreement must be extended, if the programme is extended.

If you use the training plan or apprenticeship agreement templates, please make sure you are using the latest versions, for new starts in future.

3.4 Off-the-job training calculator

A calculator has been created to help providers check compliance with the policy. To keep this as simple as possible, the start point (duration in weeks) and the end point (minimum number of off-the-job hours hours) are rounded to a full number. Statutory leave is not rounded.

You do not need to use this calculator if you have your own calculator. However, you must be satisfied that your calculation is in line with the funding rules. Note that if you are not using rounding, you may get a different result to the GOV.UK calculator; these learners may appear on the Funding Rules Monitoring (FRM) 37 report and monitored as one of the indicators in the apprenticeship accountability framework . If you are satisfied that the off-the-job training policy is being met, you don’t need to make any changes to the learners’ planned hours.

Budget 2024: £105m for 15 new special free schools

Budget 2024: Jeremy Hunt has announced £105m for 15 new special free schools

The government has announced that £105 million will be spent over four years on 15 new special free schools, as part of plans set out in today’s Spring Budget.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced the move as part of a public sector productivity plan aimed at delivering up to £1.8 billion worth of savings overall by 2029.

Mr Hunt also used his Budget speech to highlight the UK’s performance in international education rankings, and to reference an outburst by education minister Gillian Keegan that she later apologised for.

Treasury documents published after his statement say cuts to national insurance will save the “average teacher on £44,300” an extra £1,250 per year.

  • Spring Budget 2024: What do schools need?
  • Autumn Statement 2023: School leaders “bitterly disappointed”
  • School funding: Schools face “crossing red lines” with budget cuts

Budget 2024: New special free schools

On the 15 special free schools announced today, Mr Hunt told Parliament: ” Special education need provisions can be excellent when outsourced to independent sector schools but also expensive, so we’ll invest £105 million over the next four years to build 15 new special needs free schools to create additional high-quality places and increase choice for parents.”

However, sector leaders have warned the Department for Education that it cannot solve a places crisis in special schools through opening free schools alone.

And reaction to today’s announcement has been muted.

Julie McCulloch, director of policy at the Association of School and College Leaders, said a building programme for special schools was “welcome but does not address the wider crisis in special educational needs funding”.

She added: “A public sector productivity plan - whatever that actually is - will not pay the bills for schools and colleges any time soon.”

In August last year the DfE announced that it was creating seven new special free schools. This was in addition to 33 special free schools announced previously.

Ahead of the Budget, Robin Walker, a former schools minister and current chair of the Commons Education Select Committee , had urged the chancellor to extend capital funding to create more school places for pupils with special educational needs.

Separate to the Budget, the Department for Education today confirmed the locations of 20 alternative provision (AP) free schools being established.

Keegan doing ‘effing good job’

Speaking in the Commons today, Mr Hunt also referred to the “biggest ever expansion of childcare” announced last year.

“Our plan will mean an extra 60,000 parents enter the workforce in the next four years, a tremendous achievement for the education secretary, who I think is doing an effing good job.” This referred to comments that Ms Keegan famously made off camera last year.

Pisa rankings

The chancellor also highlighted the UK’s performance in the most recent Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa) rankings. He said: “In 2010 schools in the UK were behind Germany, France and Sweden in the OECD’s Pisa education rankings for reading and maths. Now, after Conservative reforms, we are ahead of them.”

National insurance ‘saving for teachers’

Today the chancellor confirmed reports of a further 2p cut to national insurance, from 10 per cent to 8 per cent from 6 April.

The Treasury says that this cut will mean “an average teacher on £44,300 will receive an annual gain of over £1,250”.

But Daniel Kebede, general secretary of the NEU teaching union, said that Mr Hunt, with his Budget announcement today, had “ turned his back on the teacher and support staff recruitment and retention crisis, the record class sizes, the decrepit state of our school buildings”.

The chancellor wanted schools “to just keep doing more and more with less and less. And it’s just not sustainable”, he added.

Last year the DfE said it would increase school funding through the national funding formula by 2.7 per cent for 2024-25 - but it later revised this figure down to 1.9 per cent after an error was discovered in the processing of pupil numbers. Unions said this revision equated to £370 million less funding.

Lack of tutoring funding ‘a disgrace’

As expected, the chancellor has not announced funding to extend the National Tutoring Programme and 16-19 Tuition Fund, in what tutoring groups called a “disappointing day for education”.

“The NTP and 16-19 Tuition Fund had taken huge steps towards making tutoring accessible to all who need it, not just the wealthy,” said Action Tutoring, Get Further and The Tutor Trust in a joint statement.

The groups warned that the government’s decision not to continue funding the programme , which ran for three years, will mean “young people from low-income backgrounds will miss out”.

Former education secretary Lord David Blunkett called the decision a “disgrace”, adding that “it will mean that tens of thousands of youngsters will lose out at a time when attendance levels are damaging the future of so many”.

His concerns were echoed by Nick Brook, chair of the DfE’s Strategic Tutoring Advisory Group, who said that cutting funding “will tilt the playing field further in favour of the better off”.

“With the attainment gap standing at a 10-year high, it beggars belief that the government thinks now is the right time to withdraw funding for tutoring, just as evaluations were proving its worth,” Mr Brook added.

Non-dom tax status

The chancellor also confirmed that he will abolish the “non-dom” system that lets foreign nationals avoid paying UK tax on money made overseas, replacing it with a “modern, simpler and fairer residency-based system”.

Abolishing the non-dom tax status is a key Labour policy, which it planned to use to fund its education policies , along with removing the VAT exemption from independent schools.

Violence reduction

Today’s Budget document also states that the government is committing £75 million over three years, from 2025 onwards, to expand the Violence Reduction Unit model across England and Wales.

“Violence Reduction Units enable local public services such as health boards, schools and police leaders to coordinate their joint strategy to tackle serious violence among young people, preventing violent crime and reducing burdens on healthcare, schools and criminal justice,” the document says.

Alternative provision

The 20 new alternative provision (AP) schools whose locations were confirmed today will create over 1,600 additional AP places across England as part of the Spending Review 2021 commitment to a capital investment of £2.6 billion in high-needs provision, the government stated today.

It says this will support early intervention, helping to improve outcomes for children requiring alternative provision, and helping them to fulfil their potential.

Here are the confirmed locations of new AP free schools:
