What we're about
The concept is simple: just turn up and start writing. With poets, novelists, screenwriters and even standup comedians we create the environment needed to concentrate hard on your chosen project. After the writing finishes, we go for a drink afterwards to get to know one another. All welcome!
Upcoming events (4+)
Wed, mar 22, 2023 , 6:00 pm gmt, writing meetup and social @ archive.
HOW WE WORK
Time to write!
For the first half (from 6.00pm to 7.30pm), we work on our own material before drifting into more of a social! We work on our own projects, from novels to screenplays to blogs, literally anything that involves writing! Bring whatever you feel comfortable writing with - notepad, laptop, tablet, pen and paper, etc.
Everybody is welcome, from amateurs to professionals. We aim to offer an all-inclusive and supportive environment. No need to be there on time either. We like to get in the zone for writing and save the chat for the social.
At 7.30 PM we start to socialise.
Archive has a huge event space at the back of their coffee shop that’s open as an extension of the coffee shop. Numbers aren’t really an issue for those still wanting some distance.
They serve delicious coffee and brunch as well as having a fully licensed bar, serving draught beer, bottles of craft beer, wines and cocktails too.
We plan to have both the writing session and social at the same venue, please be patient as we find our feet again!
The following buses will take you to the Archive: 14, 33, 34, 508, A1 (these buses can be caught on Wellington Street near the train station). The stop to get off at is Kirkstall Fire Station, there will be then be a crossing to take you over to the other side of the road.
UPDATE [masked]) - Please be aware that the Archive has changed opening hours and will close at 9.00 PM. Therefore, the event will now begin 30 minutes earlier and will start at 6.00pm.

Leeds Writers Circle
Welcome to the leeds writers’ circle.
Whatever you write, whether fiction, n on-fiction, horror, romance, children’s fiction, humour, thrillers, or poetry – or if you just enjoy listening to other people read their work – everyone is welcome.
Where we meet: The Carriageworks, Millennium Square, Leeds
When we meet: 7.30 – 9.30 pm, alternate Mondays
Every two weeks we have a manuscript evening (check our programme page for exact dates), where members are invited to read their work to the group, and receive constructive feedback from people who are writers themselves.
We try to hold occasional members-only workshops on Saturdays, run both by professional writers and by our own members. We also aim to hold three members-only competitions a year, with an external judge.
We also have special groups who meet on a regular basis outside of the regular manuscript evenings.
See our Groups and FAQs pages for details.
If you are interested in joining us, the best thing is simply to come along to a manuscript evening. Guests are always welcome. Please take a look at our information page for visitors and new members here . You can see for yourself how the Circle works and there is no obligation to join formally before you are sure it’s right for you. Annual subs currently stand at £15 with a £2 fee collected on manuscript evenings to cover the cost of the room we use. It would be lovely to see you.
A bit more about us as people can be found in our committee member profiles , and you can get a flavour of the variety of our work here , performed as part of the Ilkley Literature Festival Fringe in 2019.

Leeds Writers and Poets
A creative community of people based in leeds and beyond. .
Whether you're someone who's just dabbling in writing for the first time, or you're an experienced novelist, short story writer or spoken word poet, Leeds Writers and Poets welcomes everyone interested in creativity, story and words.
We offer a warm, supportive atmosphere, where we share our work and give each other feedback, take part in writing workshops, run socials, organise competitions, and produce an annual anthology.
We have regular meetings twice a month - once on Zoom and once in person in Heart Headingly.

What we get up to
The heart of our group is critique sessions. These are bi-monthly meetings where we read each other's work and give constructive feedback.
We run a Christmas Party and a Summer Social, with good food, drink, poetry reading and lots of bad puns. We also organise write-ins at the library and nights out for local literary events.
Competition
We run an annual members-only short story competition, which is judged by our members. Certificates are presented to the winners at the Christmas Party.
Every year we produce an anthology of our members' work. This is professionaly printed, and entered into the National Association of Writers Groups competition.

The Writers Club
Creative writing, experimental words on paper... be surrounded by inspirational folk in an amazing building.
We all have stories inside us, it might just be a tale of the squirrel you saw on your way to work, but if you tell it to me or write it down, it's a story.
Come and share those stories. This is an evening to get together to inspire, create, chat, advise, prompt or just hang out and word doodle.
The session is free of charge, whether you already write or fancy trying something new. Advice, prompts, creative sharing, coffee, tea and pencils. The cafe bar at Left Bank is open too.

Leeds Writers Circle
Founded in 1926, Leeds Writers Circle is thought to be the oldest such group in the country. Our aim is very simple: to help our members to become better writers. New members are always welcome: come along to a manuscript evening and give us a try. People interested in writing of all kinds are welcome – poetry, prose and non-fiction – and diverse skill levels are represented in the group!
We have around 60 members, and the annual cost is £15, plus a small attendance fee for each meeting. Visitors are welcome to attend a few times before joining up.
The mainstay of the circle is the Manuscript Evening, held on approximately alternate Mondays: members bring their work to read out and receive constructive critique. This is very stimulating for readers and listeners. For many, discussions continue afterwards at the pub. We are also able to offer Saturday workshops (some professionally-led); and monthly in-depth groups for novelists, short story writers and women’s fiction writers. Please see our website for a detailed programme.
We meet at The Carriageworks, Millennium Square, Leeds.

Speaking To The Shelves – Creative Writing Workshop with Antony Dunn
by The Leeds Library
Description
Have you always been a reader? Have you ever fancied having a go at writing creatively but haven’t yet devoted time to it? Perhaps you are an experienced writer looking for a new form to explore or need some good old-fashioned inspiration. Becky Cherriman curates a series of creative writing workshops, which will run on the third Saturday of every month at The Leeds Library. Guided by established writers, you will draw inspiration from the library’s collections to write and then receive feedback on your work in this stimulating environment. Workshops will draw on Dewey Decimal themes such as Contemporary Fiction, Home and Family Management, Biography, Sociology and Anthropology, Philosophy and the Theory of Religion. 16th February: Antony Dunn – autobiographical poetry The workshop is from 10am-12pm with the option to stay from 12-1pm for feedback. Antony Dunn has published four collections of poetry, most recently Take This One to Bed (Valley Press), and edited David Hughes’ posthumous collection Ex Libris , also for Valley Press. He is a regular tutor for The Poetry School and the Arvon Foundation. The rest of the workshop programme is as follows: 16th March: Clare Fisher – flash fiction 27th April: Emma Adams– script-writing for the stage 18th May: Sai Murray – writing the political (any form or genre) 15th June: Ali Harper – crime fiction Becky Cherriman is a Yorkshire writer, workshop leader and performer.
