World Computer Literacy Day is celebrated annually on December 2. Instituted by N.I.I.T in 2001, the holiday was created in honor of the company’s 20th anniversary and as a way to increase computer literacy among people, especially women and children. Though computers have become commonplace in our futuristic world, computer literacy day reminds us to contribute our quota towards making computers accessible and easy to understand for those who may struggle with innovation.

History of World Computer Literacy Day

World Computer Literacy Day was launched in 2001 by an Indian company called N.I.I.T to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Founded in 1981 by Rajendra Singh Pawar and Vijay K. Thadani, N.I.I.T, which stands for National Institute of Information Technology, is a skills and talent development company.

World Computer Literacy Day was founded by the company in response to a study that revealed that men formed the majority of computer users in the world. As a result, N.I.I.T took up the cause to educate more women and children by equipping them with computer literacy skills. Since its inception in 1981, the company has spread to over 30 countries of the world.

The history of the computer can be traced back to the early 1820s when Charles Babbage designed the ‘Difference Engine,’ a mechanical computer capable of performing simple calculations. Before this invention, people used all kinds of inventions to perform calculations, using the abacus, Napier’s bones, Pascaline adding machine, and Leibniz Wheel. However, what differentiated the ‘difference’ engine from others before it was that it was driven by steam and could solve logarithm tables.

Since then, computers have gone through various improvements and designs to become our laptops, phones, and desktop computers. In the past, computers could be so big as to occupy the length of a whole room! But, thanks to modern technology, we can hold all that scientific technology in the palm of our hands.

For a number of years, education authorities have responded to the importance of school students developing computer literacy by including it as part of the school curriculum, directly as a cross-curriculum capability, and by assessing the extent to which students are computer literate. Computer literacy and related concepts, such as ICT literacy, are defined so as to include both technological expertise and information literacy. Assessments of computer literacy, even though they vary, indicate that there are substantial variations in levels of computer literacy among students in the lower years of secondary school. In technologically developed countries, approximately one half of Year 8 students demonstrate proficiency, or advanced proficiency, in computer literacy, but up to 10% have very limited computer literacy. Assessments of computer literacy can also provide the basis for progression maps that could be used to inform curriculum development. Those progression maps will be more valuable if the frameworks on which they are based become more strongly integrated with each other. In addition, computer literacy appears to be influenced by student background, including familiarity with computers, as well as the emphases placed on it in classrooms and schools and the support provided by ICT in education systems. At present, there is less information about school and classroom influences on computer literacy than there is about student background influences. In the immediate future, the construct of computer literacy may need to accommodate increasingly to changes in software and hardware contexts in which it is manifested.

INTRODUCTION • Information technology (IT) - any computer-based tool that people use to work with information and support the information and information-processing needs of an organization • Hardware - consists of the physical devices associated with a computer system • Software - the set of instructions that the hardware executes to carry out specific tasks

Hardware Basics • Computer -an electronic device operating under the control of instructions stored in its own memory that can accept, manipulate, and store data • Hardware components: • Central processing unit (CPU) • Primary storage • Secondary storage • Input device • Output device • Communication device

Central Processing Unit • Central processing unit (CPU) (or microprocessor) - the actual hardware that interprets and executes the program (software) instructions and coordinates how all the other hardware devices work together • The CPU contains 2 main parts: • Control unit -interprets software instructions and literally tells the other hardware devices what to do, based on the software instructions • Arithmetic-logic unit (ALU) -performs all arithmetic operations (for example, addition and subtraction) and all logic operations (such as sorting and comparing numbers)

Central Processing Unit • The number of CPU cycles per second determines the speed of a CPU • Hertz (Hz) • Megahertz (MHz) - the number of millions of CPU cycles per second • Gigahertz (GHz) - the number of billions of CPU cycles per second

Central Processing Unit • Computers are digital, meaning that the data they process, whether it be text, sound, graphics, or video, is first converted into a digital (numeric) value. • Only the digits 0 and 1 are used. • Only two digits are used because they can be easily represented electronically by circuits in the computer being either off or on. • This numbering system is referred to as the binary language. 0 = Off 1 = On • Bit: Each off or on digital value—the smallest unit of data handled by a computer. Bit is short for BInarydigiT. • Byte: A group of 8 bits—can be thought of as a character (letter, number, symbol, mark of punctuation, space, etc.).

RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY (RAM) • Random access memory (RAM) - the computer’s primary working memory, in which program instructions and data are stored so that they can be accessed directly by the CPU via the processor’s high-speed external data bus • Volatile (temporary) • Primary Storage

READ ONLY MEMORY (ROM) • ROM (read only memory): contains permanent programs or data recorded in the memory by the manufacturer. • ROM is used to store the instruction set of a computer—BIOS, basic input/output system. • It retains its contents when the power of the computer is turned off. It is nonvolatile. • Data or programs in ROM can be read but not changed. • Many special-purpose computers used in automobiles, appliances, etc. use a small amount of ROM.

STORAGE DEVICES • Storage Devices - consists of equipment designed to store large volumes of data for long-term storage • Referred to as secondary storage • Permanent or non-volatile
