History and Purpose

The School of Nursing builds on a 120-year tradition of educational excellence at the professional, advanced practice, and doctoral levels, while raising the school’s profile in research and scholarship. As the nation’s largest healthcare profession, nursing represents a fundamental core of the workforce. Georgetown’s commitment to nursing is infused by our Jesuit values of caring for the whole person—cura personalis—and serving the common good.

The School of Nursing offers numerous MS and doctoral degree programs. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing is a traditional four-year program. A highly regarded faculty provides students with a grounding in clinical skills; knowledge in the biological, physical, and social sciences; and nursing theory. Students have access to diverse health systems and community-based organizations around the Washington region and at the O’Neill Family Foundation Clinical Simulation Center in St. Mary’s Hall. Students are well prepared for the NCLEX-RN examination. Georgetown educates nurses who are well prepared for licensure and certification examinations; first-time pass rates are exceptional, when not perfect. Alumni of the BSN Program have gone on to diverse careers, prestigious graduate programs, and leadership roles in various sectors.

The BSN is a direct-entry nursing program with hands-on clinical experience in the first year of study. Students obtain over 850 total clinical and laboratory hours in a variety of clinical settings. In addition, Georgetown houses the O’Neill Family Foundation Clinical Simulation Center, an immersive facility for nursing students to build and refine their skills as professional and advanced nurses. The senior nursing practicum allows students to gain further experience in an area of their choice. The BSN Honors Program allows those students in the undergraduate nursing major with academic potential to be challenged at the highest level. Participants in the nursing honors program will address, through scholarly inquiry, a contemporary issue related to clinical nursing practice.

Education at the School of Nursing is grounded in cura personalis—the care and development of the whole person—by educating students for a meaningful life, challenging them intensively, all while supporting them in their learning. The School embraces the Jesuit inspired principles shared by the entire Georgetown community, which emphasize the pursuit of knowledge with a responsibility to contribute to the common good. Students develop into health professionals who can recognize and respond to the full human experience encountered in the health field. During their first year at Georgetown University, BSN students participate in the First Year Colloquium. This course is taught by faculty across the interdisciplinary team at the School of Nursing and School of Health. All students are exposed to the various arenas of health care with opportunity to dialogue and critique health policy, quality and care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to commonly asked questions about Georgetown University’s online Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs.

What can you do with a DNP degree?

If you don’t already hold a graduate degree in nursing, a DNP program enables you to combine master’s- and doctoral-level coursework; prepares you for certification examination to become an APRN; and equips you with the clinical knowledge you need to provide primary, acute, and specialty care in your specialization.

Is a DNP the same as a nurse practitioner (NP)?

No. A DNP is a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree, whereas  nurse practitioner (NP)  is a professional job title requiring a degree and certification. Many DNP students are already licensed RNs and board-certified NPs. These students often enter DNP programs to prepare for advanced leadership roles in their organizations.

Can someone with a DNP write prescriptions?

The DNP is a terminal degree which, on its own, does not grant authority to write prescriptions. Board-certified NPs can prescribe medication in certain states; however, an NP’s scope of practice is determined by state regulatory bodies, not degree-granting institutions.

Are you called a doctor with a DNP?

A DNP-educated nurse may use the academic title “Dr.” Many choose to clarify their position in a clinical setting where “Dr.” commonly denotes a physician, often listing “DNP” after their name instead, and some states have strict legislation surrounding where and when a nurse may be referred to as “doctor.”

How do I earn my DNP degree?

It depends on your experience level and your preferred learning modality, specialization area, and pace of study. Many DNP programs offer different paths of study — ranging from one to four years in duration — based on your current credentials, such as an RN license, a BSN, or a master’s in nursing.

Is a nurse practitioner a doctor?

No. Nurse practitioners (NPs) and medical doctors (MDs) are highly trained professionals with similar responsibilities. However, with residency, it takes an average of 11 years postsecondary education to become an MD. Aspiring NPs may be ready to obtain licensure and begin leading patients’ care  with six to eight years of postsecondary education.

Pursuing a doctorate in healthcare administration can advance your career. But is an online or on-campus format right for you? Online learning prioritizes accessibility and convenience, allowing degree-seekers to attend a top-ranked program without relocating.

Before deciding to earn your doctorate online , consider the following factors.

What’s your budget for earning a doctorate in healthcare administration? Most doctoral programs require a substantial time commitment, which can influence the total cost of the degree.

Choosing an online format can save you money on tuition and expenses. For example, distance learners typically spend less on transportation and housing costs, because they study from home rather than commuting to campus or relocating for graduate school.

Online programs offer a significant benefit over in-person programs: the flexibility to complete coursework on your schedule. Most online healthcare administration doctoral programs use asynchronous classes, meaning you can earn your degree without set log-in times. That can make earning a doctorate easier for working professionals and busy adults.

Learning Style

Earning a doctorate online requires strong time management and organizational skills, especially if you plan to work while in graduate school. Self-motivated students often benefit from the flexibility of an online learning style, while others prefer the structure of an in-person program.

Which is right for you? If you haven’t taken classes online before, consider whether the format works well for your unique learning style.

Accreditation

You should always choose an accredited institution, whether earning your degree online or on-campus. Online universities with accreditation meet the same high standards as brick-and-mortar institutions, so check the school’s accreditation status before applying.

The best universities hold accreditation from an independent, nonprofit accrediting agency. In order to receive accreditation, institutions undergo a rigorous review that covers their graduation requirements, faculty qualifications and student learning outcomes. Accredited schools regularly repeat this process to maintain their credential.

In addition to institutional accreditation, healthcare administration programs may hold accreditation from specialized accrediting agencies. For example, the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education grants accreditation to master’s programs in healthcare administration and management. Doctoral programs housed in the business school may also hold accreditation from a programmatic accreditor in business.

The U.S. Department of Education maintains a Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs where you can check accreditation status.

Consider Your Future Goals

An online doctorate can prepare you for executive leadership positions, academic positions or top-level careers in healthcare administration . When researching your options, make sure you look for programs that match your future goals.

For example, Ph.D. programs often lead to academic and research roles, while D.H.A. and D.B.A. programs prepare graduates for leadership careers in the healthcare field.

It’s also a good idea to review each program’s curriculum to understand their emphasis areas and your opportunities to customize the program. Check if the degree requires you to complete a research-based dissertation or a doctoral project.

Understand Your Expenses and Financing Options

The cost of a doctorate in healthcare administration varies widely. Programs on our list range from $234 to over $1,000 per credit. Most degrees require 54 to 62 credits, totaling about $14,500 to $85,000.

Comparing costs and understanding your financing options can help you find a program that fits your budget. For example, distance learners attending accredited institutions qualify for federal student aid programs, including federal loans that offer lower interest rates and more repayment options. You can file the FAFSA to learn about your federal aid options.

Other financing options include grants, scholarships and assistantships. You can also cover some or all of your costs with savings.

Is it worth it to get a Ph.D. in healthcare administration?

Earning a Ph.D. in healthcare administration can prepare you for academic, research and leadership roles. For example, most college professors hold a Ph.D. When comparing doctoral programs in healthcare administration, you can also look at D.H.A. and D.B.A. programs.

How long is a Ph.D. in healthcare administration?

A Ph.D. in healthcare administration typically requires four to six years, including coursework and a dissertation. D.H.A. programs generally take less time; many full-time programs require three years.

What is the difference between a Ph.D. and a D.H.A.?

Both a Ph.D. and a D.H.A. are doctoral-level programs in healthcare management. However, a Ph.D. typically emphasizes research and theory, including a research-based doctoral dissertation. D.H.A. programs focus on applied knowledge and skills and may require a real-world project rather than a dissertation.

Is there a Ph.D. in healthcare management?

Yes, you can earn a Ph.D. in healthcare management. Many universities offer doctoral-level healthcare management and administration programs, including options to earn a Ph.D., D.H.A. or D.B.A. with a concentration in healthcare management.

A white woman in a bright blue jacket stands in front of a stone building on Georgetown's campus smiling.

Title: What This Alumna Has Learned in Her 35 Years at Georgetown

This story is part of Georgetown Faces, a storytelling series that celebrates the beloved figures, unsung heroes and dedicated Hoyas who make our campus special.

A white woman with short brown hair and a bright blue buttoned jacket stands smiling in front of a graphical image of an observatory behind her.

Theresa Torres (C’88) has worked in the same office for 35 years. Although her role has changed several times, this alumna’s steadfast commitment to serving students in the Office of Student Financial Services (OSFS) has not.

Torres is the graduate program director for OSFS, a role she assumed in 2000. She works closely with administrators across the university, staff in the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences and with over 100 graduate masters, executive masters and Ph.D. programs to streamline the financial aid processes. Before assuming this role, Torres was a counselor, loan coordinator and assistant director.

Torres attributes her longevity on the Hilltop to two things: early-career mentors and the family-oriented environment on campus. She comes from a family of Hoyas – her dad and brother both graduated from Georgetown – and she earned her bachelor’s degree in American government with a minor in psychology and minor equivalent in fine arts in 1988. Torres returned to Georgetown just two months after graduating for her first job.

“No year has been the same since I started,” Torres said.

Learn more about her family ties to Georgetown, her interests in iconography and inventions, and what keeps her on the Hilltop.

A white woman with brown hair wearing a bright blue sweater leans on a stone ledge with steps behind her.

My family ties to Georgetown: My parents met in Washington, DC. My mother, Darlene, a registered nurse, was born in a rural coal mining town in West Virginia and my dad, Frank Torres Jr., was from Guam. He graduated from Georgetown College in 1956 with a degree in government and military science.

A black and white photo of a male alumni from Georgetown.

My dad served in the Army and was stationed in Massachusetts, Germany, Virginia, New Mexico and elsewhere. At the end of his distinguished military career, my parents retired to Guam. I am proud that he was the first Major General (two-star) from Guam in the United States Army.

My brother, Frank Torres III (C’85), also attended Georgetown and earned a degree in chemistry. My family heritage from the Pacific Islands and rural Appalachia, and deep Catholic faith, has given me a deep awareness and appreciation of other cultures, and has enabled me to be especially sensitive, as a person and a financial aid officer, to other people’s socioeconomic and related circumstances.

What I remember from my first day on the job: I remember walking up the steps of Village C and being overjoyed to return to the university to work full-time, having worked in the office while I was a student in the College. My boss, Rob Meck, who became a great mentor to me and was on vacation on my first day, left a very welcoming note and a stack of reading material to take me through.

I knew Georgetown from a student perspective and was then embarking on understanding it from an administrative one. This new job enabled me to give back to Georgetown through assisting the university’s efforts to help students secure affordable financial aid and study at Georgetown. And that has guided me since.

My first big assignment: was to revise the Financial Aid Handbook, which was one of the key documents used by the university community to understand the financial aid process. This was one of many major tasks that has benefitted people’s lives, for which I have had the privilege of working on during my career at the university.

phd nursing georgetown

What keeps me coming back to work : One noticeable characteristic about the OSFS is that historically our departure rate has been very low due to high morale, and for me, the office has always been a family. We’ve all had different challenges in our work and personal lives, but I attribute the respectful management approach to another early mentor: my dean and a pioneer in the financial aid field, Patricia McWade, as the force leading us through. This is where cura personalis really comes to light in our office: she has enabled OSFS to be student-centric, focusing on how we can best serve the students.

Outside of work, you’ll find that: I enjoy traveling, history, art, ancient archeology and inventions. Early on in my career, my mentor and director of the office during that time, Ken Ostberg, noticed I was becoming a workaholic, and he encouraged me to figure out what my hobbies were and to develop them over time. I never forgot that sage advice.

In Washington, I serve on the Advisory Council for Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens in Northwest DC, which displays a notable collection of Russian art and stately gardens. I enjoy bouncing ideas off a dear friend, Ali Jazairy, who holds 20 patents. One day, with his continued encouragement, I hope to add “inventor” to my list of achievements.

I also dabble off-and-on in a course with a Russian iconographer. This relates back to the fine arts courses I took in addition to my psychology minor in undergrad, including painting, drawing and sculpture. These classes were incredible in allowing me to create and not be boxed in – really helping me balance my government major.

My spiritual mentors were: Fr. Dick McHugh, S.J., Fr. Joe Lacey, S.J. and Fr. Brian McDermott, S.J. – all Jesuits from Georgetown and Holy Trinity Parish. They guided me to develop a greater awareness of myself and to be more present with others around me. This influenced me to be more empathetic toward other people, and I was able to identify tools for going through life.

Fr. Lacey taught me that even in our busy lives, we can always fit people in because we’ll get the time back. These Jesuits helped me focus on my spiritual growth and the people I’ve encountered, and connecting them together – shaping me into the person I am today.

A woman with brown hair and a bright blue jacket looks at the rounded dome of an observatory behind her.

My favorite place on campus is: the Father Francis J. Heyden Observatory and Gardens. The observatory was where I saw Haley’s Comet in 1986. At the time, the telescope was working, so it was a marvelous experience. It dates back to 1843 and was a premier observatory within the United States.

One thing I keep on my desk: is a cat puzzle. I’ve kept it there because it was a gift from a friend and Georgetown alumnus who knew I enjoyed problem solving and has brought me great joy over the years. It has multiple sides and can be reassembled daily in a different way, which resonates with the creative challenges I am tasked with solving in my job.

What comes to mind when I think about Georgetown: Family. Whether it be co-workers, external work colleagues, parents or students, each person has their own life story. It’s about understanding and listening to what is going on with them and working with them. There is also a caring aspect. We come together in times of joy and times of tragedy, and I really appreciate working and being in that type of environment. …

When I went to my class reunion in 2023, and I said to my classmates, ‘I never left Georgetown,’ and some would say, ‘Well wait a minute, because of you, think of how many people you’ve helped as they have gone through Georgetown.’ There were a lot of special people that I worked with, and they all had their stories. I’ll never forget them.
