Essay No 6 on ” Essay about my life” (400 words):

Life is full of ups and downs. I know this is a cliché, but this phrase summarizes my whole existence. Sometimes my life is fun, happy and almost enviable and at other times my life is boring, sad, uninspiring and sometimes downright disgusting. I know I am not perfect, I have never tried to be, but one thing is true – I AM WHO I AM.

Looking back at my childhood, I remember the fun times, the laughter we all shared the lavish parties my parents threw, my wonderful friends and my fancy dresses. I was the envy of my friends and I erroneously thought my life would follow this pattern forever. Was I ever wrong!

I was a good child. I never acted out like I do now. I was always obedient and I had good grades, even if they were not excellent grades. I had a positive outlook towards life. I cared an awful lot about people and I thought nothing would ever change this attitude that I had.

I was brought up by the crème de la crème, my parents were rich and influential in my town. I couldn’t imagine my life without the affluence and the excesses. My parents weren’t always around but at least they were together. I thought they were happy together and we were financially stable to withstand anything. Until my brother was involved in an accident that claimed his life and made my mother cripple.

Ever since joseph died, life had never been the same at the (insert your last name) mansion. Mum became bitter (who could blame her), she and joseph were quite close. I was the daddy’s pet. Eventually, they both got a divorce and I have been conveying myself from my mum’s house to my dad’s.

My grades have suffered quite a hit. I have never been a straight ‘A’ student, I barely even have an ‘A’ on my report sheet, but now my grades are quite laughable. We don’t have money like we used to. I don’t know the details but dad got jilted and there is hardly anything left to spend. I have to work on my grades now because if I don’t secure a scholarship, I am basically on my own.

Dad has gotten married to another woman and now they have a child. I am not eighteen so I can’t refuse to visit them. I know my little step-brother has committed no offence, but each time I look at how happy my father has become with his existence I get very jealous. Now you understand why I opened my introduction with the phrase I used. One thing I know is that change is the only constant and nothing lasts forever. My life is not perfect, but then again whose is?

Essay No 7 on “Speech About Myself” (500 words):

Millions of people have walked the earth and many will still do. However, no two people have the same characteristics even among identical twins. Personalities, regardless of how dissimilar, make the world full of varieties. This is why I know I am uniquely me and the best version of myself there is. Perfection is a mirage, however the best individuals are those give it their all in order to attain perfection while knowing that it is impossible to be perfect. I believe people should strive to improve their life and be the best they can ever be regardless of how impossible the task may be.

My name is (insert your first name and last name). I live in (insert your city here). I am a (insert your country here). I am the first born of my parent. We are four in number and I have always felt responsible for my family. I love my parents and siblings dearly and the feeling is mutual.

They may not be financially rich, but they have big hearts.

I am in class 8 at (mention the name of your school). I have a stable grade and although I cannot rank high among the brilliant people in my class, I get by quite well. My favorite subjects are art, literature and music. I love to draw, paint and read books. This is how I often clear my head or distress myself. I desire to go to the university and obtain a degree in any art related course. This will help me to become a successful person and also impact the lives of others while I am at it.

I cannot claim that I love school and I don’t hate school either, I guess I’m just indifferent. Although, I love my art classes and literature lessons too. People are nice to me in school, I don’t get bullied and I rarely ever get punished by my teachers nor have I been asked to report to the principal’s office.

I am an outgoing person with a good sense of humor and I make friends easily. My friends say that I am funny and fun to be with. I sometimes go out of my way to be nice to people and help them out. I guess this is rooted in my sense of responsibility which was honed into me by my parents considering that I am the first born of my family. Friendship and family mean a lot to me. I can go all out for my friends and my family and they know it. I think this is why I have had the same set of friends for years. We have transitioned from friends to family.

I’m always looking for ways to develop my skills and learn new things not just in school but outside the school environment. I share ideas with my friends, we learn interesting things about one another, and most of the people I associate with I met with while on the lookout for ways to advance my skills.

I have every intention to make the world a better place. I know I’m no superman and I have no concrete plans right now, but I am on a road to discovery. I feel happy and enthusiastic when people commend my art works and the poems I love to doodle every now and them. I pride myself as a motivational person, so I write poems for people to inspire them when they are down or don’t know what else to do. I know I’m on the right track and soon enough I’ll be close to where I want to be.

Essay No 8 on “ Myself Essay” (500 words):

I cannot say exactly how I have survived school even till now, but I did and I have come out somewhat stronger. Bullying has been an awful experience that characterized the most part of my school life. I have endured bullying for so long that it has shaped who I have turned out to be. I know for a certain that we can reduce bullying (I doubt it can be totally stopped), by paying attention to people who have been bullied, the bullies themselves, analyzing how it happened, what led to it, the impact it has on both parties, and how best it can be dealt with.

Initially, I was a very quiet and calm girl. I never spoke back to my elders and I was very kind and accommodating of others. Now I can’t stand tardiness and I am always on the defensive. So I react before thinking of the consequences.

I am the last of seven children and I have endured bullying at home. Although, I wouldn’t exactly compare what I go through at home with what I endure in school. My six siblings are all boys and it is their nature to make my life miserable. I sometimes find it endearing because that is the only way they relate with me. I’m not athletic in any way, I am lanky and awfully small for my age. I get teased by my brothers for this, so when others bully me in school for being a size too small for my class, I take it all in stride.

I have never told my brothers or my parents about the bullying I constantly endure at school. Why should I? Mum works extra hard to support my dad and my dad already works two jobs as it is. I have a scholarship that covers my tuition fee, which was why I didn’t attend the same school as my brothers in the neighborhood. I was constantly reminded by the rich students why I don’t belong to their world and if not for the scholarship I wouldn’t even be breathing the same air they breathe.

This is true though, and as much as I wanted to flunk school, I couldn’t because attending a prestigious school was going to help my college application. So also would maintaining an outstanding college grade. I used to find trash in my bags, lockers and basically everything I brought to school.

Like all things that had a beginning this came to an end. I don’t know how it did but it did and I’m forever grateful that it did. I know I should analyze the root cause for the abrupt end, but I’m only human. Life is not a bed of rose, this I learned while still a student at (mention the name of the school).

Essay No 9 on “Essay about Myself” (600 words):

Three major things characterize my whole existence; my intellect, my spiritual doctrines, and my social life. The intellectual aspect of my life consist of my creativity, my studies and basically my life pursuits that involve my intellectual capabilities. My social life is quite vibrant. I am an outgoing person and I make it a habit to meet people. My spiritual doctrines and my faith inform the decisions I make and consequently guide who I have become today.

My name is (insert your first name and your last name her). I am a (mention your nationality). I am seventeen years old. I am in (mention your class) and I attend (mention the name of your school here). I live with my parents and my siblings. I am the second child in my family. My parents have missed most of the big events in my life. They’ve missed most of my graduations in school, they’ve missed most of my birthdays and every important even that marked my existence. I don’t hate my parents. I don’t know them.

My siblings have never been around either. My birth was considered a mistake. I don’t know all the details but I know mum was not supposed to get pregnant when she did. The bottom line is I was an inconvenience and I have always been made painfully aware of just how inconvenient my birth is. Most of my siblings are married, some are away at college and the ones who aren’t think I am a child so they hardly relate with me.

I am not perfect and I have never claimed to be. However, I know what I want out of life and I pursue it doggedly. I am a focused person and it has often been said of me that I am quite focused-driven and that I have a one-track mind. I don’t know if I should consider that as a compliment or not.

My career aspiration is to go to the university and study law. I spend most of my time at the libraries or at my best friend’s house (mention the name of your close friend(s)). I am an intelligent person and I always top my class. I guess my need to always top my class stem from my need to get the attention of my parents or from the need an escapist sentiments.

I am not a blusterous person, neither do I seek to impress anyone. I figured if cant so much as compel my parents to care enough to be there for me when I need them, then there is no way I can ever impress others. I do not have lots of friend but my small circle of friends I cherish a lot. I am an observer. I try to learn a lot about the people I associate with, so I study their characters before I react. By studying others, I have learnt an awful lot which I have incorporated into my belief systems and general behaviour.

I mentioned earlier that I am quite religious. I was brought up into a Christian family. I have always gone to church every Sunday. My parents may never be around, but they always ensure that we all go to church on Sunday. I am generally good and I try to always do the right things to everyone. I live by the word and never on the edge. In fact, my life is quite plain and I never ever rebel. Not once in my whole life. I always take things in stride.

IT IS A TRUTH universally acknowledged that a high school student in possession of a good résumé must still be in want of a personal essay. In the best of times and the worst of times, first impressions matter. Any student who hopes to be the hero of his own life will strive to write a great opening line.

Picture the dark and stormy nights and the rosy-fingered dawns during which college applicants for the Class of '12 took pen in hand. What would work best—a poem, a stink, a grating noise, a quality of light, a tone, a habit, a nostalgia, a dream? A screaming comes across the sky as lines are written, then abandoned. The rewriting and editing seems to last till the clocks strike thirteen.

But at last their personal statements for the Common App are crafted. The undergraduate admissions staff, while evaluating students on their total merit, take notice of the first lines that make essay-reading a particular pleasure. We asked them to share some of their favorite openers from those students who, starting in September, can write, Call me Cardinal.

Unlike many mathematicians, I live in an irrational world; I feel that my life is defined by a certain amount of irrationalities that bloom too frequently, such as my brief foray in front of 400 people without my pants.

Sitting cross-legged on the floor of a Bhimanagar slum dwelling in Bangalore, I ran my fingers across a fresh cut on my forehead.

I almost didn't live through September 11th, 2001.

When I was 8 years old, I shocked my family and a local archaeologist by discovering artifacts dating back almost 3,500 years.

Good Grief! You never would have guessed that an unassuming meek lovable loser like Charlie Brown would have an influence on anyone; but indeed he has.

Self-Introductions in English: “My Name is…” & Beyond!

So, you’re getting ready for a visit (or stay) in an English-speaking country and are eager to make friends. But in the back of your mind you’re thinking: “I have no idea how to introduce myself in English!”

Self-introductions are the cornerstone of beginning a new relationship. It’s during a self-introduction that you let the other person know all the basics: your name, your age, your occupation, what you enjoy doing in your spare time, and so on. Self-introductions can be difficult and nerve-racking enough in your own language (they are for me, anyway!), so doing them in another language might leave you feeling shy or diffident.

While I can’t help you feel less shy, I can help you feel more prepared for your first few introductions in English. In this article, I’ll be going over how to identify yourself, how to place yourself in society, and how to share personal details with those you want to form a deeper bond with, all in American English.

1. Body Language

There is one thing I want to go over before verbal introductions: body language. Body language is something you can use to your benefit, regardless of your English-language skills.

It’s important to know what your posture, gestures, and facial expressions are telling others about you, and how to use your body language to your advantage. Below is a quick list of things you should do when introducing yourself

Smile when introducing yourself. Smiling indicates a positive mood and is likely to make you a more appealing conversation partner.
Stand (or sit) up straight. This indicates that you’re confident, comfortable, and ready to engage in a conversation. You can also use this to your benefit by appearing more confident than you really are—and sometimes appearing more confident can help you feel more confident, too!
Shake hands. A brief, friendly handshake is one of the most common ways to greet someone in the United States upon first meeting, and can be done with almost anyone you meet, regardless of gender or social status. This is a good way to begin an introduction, particularly in business environments.
Maintain eye contact (but not too much). In the United States, most people prefer to speak with someone who’s not “afraid” to look them in the eyes. It’s considered a sign of honesty, trustworthiness, and friendliness to maintain eye contact during a conversation. Maintaining eye contact indicates that you’re listening and interested in the discussion. But be careful not to come off as “creepy” by staring into their eyes for very long periods of time; allow yourself to casually look away from time to time, and be sure to blink. 😉

2. Identifying Yourself

How do you introduce yourself in English? Or better yet, how do you introduce yourself briefly in English? The best way to initiate a conversation is with a cheery “Hi” or “Hey,” and a smile! If you need to do some brushing up on greetings, you can learn more about English greetings in our dedicated article .

1- Stating Your Name

Once you’ve gotten the conversation started with an initial greeting, you can offer your name. There’s a variety of ways you can do this; below I’ve outlined the most common sentence structures with examples.

My name is Jamie .
I’m Ira .
My name is Lillian , or Lily for short.
You can call me Bob .

If you want to ask someone else’s name, you can use one of the following sentences:

My name is Valerie . What’s yours?
This a more formal way of asking someone’s name and is usually the best option, especially in business environments.
This is less formal, but it’s acceptable in most social situations that don’t require a high level of professionalism.

During this stage, also be sure to say “Nice to meet you,” as this is seen as respectful and friendly. If the other person has already said this, you can say “ It’s nice to meet you too ,” or “ Thank you. Likewise. ”

In the United States, it’s not very common to ask about someone’s age unless there’s a good reason to. That said, it’s not a taboo either. My recommendation for most social situations is to keep from asking about age unless the person seems to be about the same age as you.

Here are a couple of ways you can ask about someone’s age:

I’m thirty years old. How about you?
May I ask how old you are?
May I ask your age?
Note that this is the most informal way of asking someone’s age, but it does sound more natural in speech than the others. This phrase is best used in laid-back, informal environments with people about your own age.

Now, here are the most common ways to answer the question:

I’m thirty years old.
I’m twenty-five .
I turned twenty last June .
I’m turning forty-three this November .

3- Nationality

In the United States, you may be asked about your nationality , or where you’re from. Here are a few simple ways to answer the question:

I’m from China .
I’m Norwegian .
I came here from Russia .
I’m visiting from Japan .

3. Placing Yourself in Society

After you and the person you’re speaking with have established the basics, it’s only natural for the conversation to steer toward what you do . Three major factors of society (and your place in it) are: education , work, and family. Here, I’ll be going over each of these factors.

1- Education: Stating Your School & Major

If you’re in school, you’ll likely be asked a lot about what school you’re going to and what you’re majoring in. Here are a few basic answers to these questions:

I’m a student at Harvard .
I’m studying at Arizona State University .
I’m studying Psychology .
My major is Food and Nutrition .
I haven’t chosen a major yet.

If you recently graduated or are no longer going to school, you can answer like this. Note the use of past-tense verbs in these answers.

I used to be a student at Harvard .
I went to school at Arizona State University .
I studied Psychology .
I majored in Food and Nutrition .

Below is a list of popular majors (in no particular order), but you can also take a look at our list of common school subjects for more possibilities!

2- Stating Profession

In the United States, one of the most common questions and conversation topics is work. When you first meet someone, they’re likely to ask what you do for a living. As you continue to interact with that person, many conversations will likely have to do with work.

Here are a few ways you can respond to someone after they ask about your profession:

I work at NASA .
I’m working at Apple .
I work as an engineer .
I work as an engineer at NASA .
I’m a doctor .
I do accounting for a living.
I’ve been a pilot for thirty years.
Here, you can also use one of the above sentences to explain what you do while self-employed. You’ll see an example of this in the sample essay section.
I’m not currently employed.

To ask about their profession or job, you can use the following sentences:

What do you do for a living?
What’s your occupation?
I’m a real estate agent . What about you?

3- Talking About Family

Family may be the most unique topic in this article, and one that’s both personal and societal. You may or may not be asked about your family during your first conversation with someone. But if you are, and you feel like opening up a little bit, below are a few sentences you can use to talk about your family .

I have a big family.
I have a younger brother .
I have one sister .
I have two uncles and one aunt .
My grandma is a bookkeeper .
My mom and I aren’t very close.

If you’re not comfortable talking about your family, that’s completely fine and the other person will likely understand. You can let them know this as follows:

I don’t really like talking about my family. Can we talk about something else?

4. Sharing Personal Details

Usually, a conversation will begin to drift toward lighter, more personal matters after the basics are out of the way. This doesn’t always happen during your first conversation with someone, but the following topics are likely to come up sooner or later.

In the United States, people love (and treat) their pets like family. Don’t be surprised if the person you’re talking with brings up their pets, or wants to know about yours.

I have a bird named Chirpy .
I have two fish .
I have a cat and a lizard . Their names are Lola and Slinky .
I have one cat and one lizard .
I used to have a dog , but we gave it away .
I don’t have any pets.

Many friendships begin when two (or more) people realize they have similar interests. Talking about hobbies or favorite activities is one of the simplest ways to have a deeper conversation with someone. And you never know; you may find yourself a new gym buddy, writing critique group, or fellow foodie.

Here are a few ways to describe what hobbies you’re into and what you enjoy doing in your spare time:

I enjoy doing free writing .
I like drawing .
I play video games in my free time.
I jog and watch TV in my free time.
I don’t have any hobbies.

5. Bonus: “Favorite” Questions!

So far, I’ve gone over basic questions and topics that usually come up during introductions. But you may find that people you meet are curious to know more about you and will start asking about your favorite of something (which of something you like the most).

The following questions are commonly asked when people are getting to know each other, and are usually a lot more interesting than talking about work or school. 😉

What’s your favorite color ?
What’s your favorite animal?
What’s your favorite subject in school?
What’s your favorite movie/ TV show ?
What’s your favorite band/song?
What’s your favorite book?
What’s your favorite food ?
What’s your favorite candy/dessert?

These are questions that you can ask your conversation partner as well to keep the conversation going and entertaining! This is also a great way to find similarities (and differences) between you and the person you’re meeting.

6. “Introduce Myself in English” Essay

Here, I’ll write an example “Introduce Myself in English” essay. To introduce myself in English, I might write the following:

Hi! My name is Tabitha, or Tabby for short. I’m turning twenty-one this June, and I’m from the United States. I used to be a student at Lumerit Scholar, and I majored in Creative Writing. I’m self-employed as a writer and editor. I have a big family. I have one sister and one brother. I used to have a cat, but she passed away. I do writing and walking in my free time. My favorite color is blue, my favorite book is The Thorn Birds , and my favorite candy is Reeses’ Peanut Butter Cups.

Note that as your English skills improve and you become more familiar with the language as a whole, your self-introductions will become more fluid and meaningful!

Let me ‘Introduce’ myself: Writing an Introduction

Introductions are key to a good essay and a good grade. Why? Because they are the first thing an examiner reads and judges you on. Now let me give you a little insight. Examiners, people who mark for the exam board – often teachers, will have potentially read the same answer 300 times. What does this mean? They are bored! Your challenge then is to write an engaging (or at least different) introduction to spark their interest (not easy hence the ‘challenge’).

Now in my experience of marking a lot of essays I think there are a few simple things you can do to catch your readers attention.

Explore what the words in the question actually mean
Add a rhetorical question
Mention the main key names/ topic areas which will be explored in your answer
Finish off the introduction properly
Add a quote or point of interest

Note: You do not need to use all 5 for an effective introduction – just what works for your writing style or the question asked.

How to Write an Essay Introduction | 4 Steps & Examples

A good introduction paragraph is an essential part of any academic essay . It sets up your argument and tells the reader what to expect.

The main goals of an introduction are to:

Catch your reader’s attention.
Give background on your topic.
Present your thesis statement —the central point of your essay.

This introduction example is taken from our interactive essay example on the history of Braille.

The invention of Braille was a major turning point in the history of disability. The writing system of raised dots used by visually impaired people was developed by Louis Braille in nineteenth-century France. In a society that did not value disabled people in general, blindness was particularly stigmatized, and lack of access to reading and writing was a significant barrier to social participation. The idea of tactile reading was not entirely new, but existing methods based on sighted systems were difficult to learn and use. As the first writing system designed for blind people’s needs, Braille was a groundbreaking new accessibility tool. It not only provided practical benefits, but also helped change the cultural status of blindness. This essay begins by discussing the situation of blind people in nineteenth-century Europe. It then describes the invention of Braille and the gradual process of its acceptance within blind education. Subsequently, it explores the wide-ranging effects of this invention on blind people’s social and cultural lives.

Your first sentence sets the tone for the whole essay, so spend some time on writing an effective hook.

Avoid long, dense sentences—start with something clear, concise and catchy that will spark your reader’s curiosity.

The hook should lead the reader into your essay, giving a sense of the topic you’re writing about and why it’s interesting. Avoid overly broad claims or plain statements of fact.

Examples: Writing a good hook

Take a look at these examples of weak hooks and learn how to improve them.

Braille was an extremely important invention.
The invention of Braille was a major turning point in the history of disability.

The first sentence is a dry fact; the second sentence is more interesting, making a bold claim about exactly why the topic is important.

The internet is defined as “a global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities.”
The spread of the internet has had a world-changing effect, not least on the world of education.

Avoid using a dictionary definition as your hook, especially if it’s an obvious term that everyone knows. The improved example here is still broad, but it gives us a much clearer sense of what the essay will be about.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is a famous book from the nineteenth century.
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is often read as a crude cautionary tale about the dangers of scientific advancement.

Instead of just stating a fact that the reader already knows, the improved hook here tells us about the mainstream interpretation of the book, implying that this essay will offer a different interpretation.

Next, give your reader the context they need to understand your topic and argument. Depending on the subject of your essay, this might include:

Historical, geographical, or social context
An outline of the debate you’re addressing
A summary of relevant theories or research about the topic
Definitions of key terms

The information here should be broad but clearly focused and relevant to your argument. Don’t give too much detail—you can mention points that you will return to later, but save your evidence and interpretation for the main body of the essay.

How much space you need for background depends on your topic and the scope of your essay. In our Braille example, we take a few sentences to introduce the topic and sketch the social context that the essay will address:

Now it’s time to narrow your focus and show exactly what you want to say about the topic. This is your thesis statement —a sentence or two that sums up your overall argument.

This is the most important part of your introduction. A good thesis isn’t just a statement of fact, but a claim that requires evidence and explanation.

The goal is to clearly convey your own position in a debate or your central point about a topic.

Particularly in longer essays, it’s helpful to end the introduction by signposting what will be covered in each part. Keep it concise and give your reader a clear sense of the direction your argument will take.

As you research and write, your argument might change focus or direction as you learn more.

For this reason, it’s often a good idea to wait until later in the writing process before you write the introduction paragraph—it can even be the very last thing you write.

When you’ve finished writing the essay body and conclusion , you should return to the introduction and check that it matches the content of the essay.

It’s especially important to make sure your thesis statement accurately represents what you do in the essay. If your argument has gone in a different direction than planned, tweak your thesis statement to match what you actually say.

Literary analysis

This introduction to an argumentative essay sets up the debate about the internet and education, and then clearly states the position the essay will argue for.

The spread of the internet has had a world-changing effect, not least on the world of education. The use of the internet in academic contexts is on the rise, and its role in learning is hotly debated. For many teachers who did not grow up with this technology, its effects seem alarming and potentially harmful. This concern, while understandable, is misguided. The negatives of internet use are outweighed by its critical benefits for students and educators—as a uniquely comprehensive and accessible information source; a means of exposure to and engagement with different perspectives; and a highly flexible learning environment.

This introduction to a short expository essay leads into the topic (the invention of the printing press) and states the main point the essay will explain (the effect of this invention on European society).

In many ways, the invention of the printing press marked the end of the Middle Ages. The medieval period in Europe is often remembered as a time of intellectual and political stagnation. Prior to the Renaissance, the average person had very limited access to books and was unlikely to be literate. The invention of the printing press in the 15th century allowed for much less restricted circulation of information in Europe, paving the way for the Reformation.

This introduction to a literary analysis essay , about Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein , starts by describing a simplistic popular view of the story, and then states how the author will give a more complex analysis of the text’s literary devices.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is often read as a crude cautionary tale. Arguably the first science fiction novel, its plot can be read as a warning about the dangers of scientific advancement unrestrained by ethical considerations. In this reading, and in popular culture representations of the character as a “mad scientist”, Victor Frankenstein represents the callous, arrogant ambition of modern science. However, far from providing a stable image of the character, Shelley uses shifting narrative perspectives to gradually transform our impression of Frankenstein, portraying him in an increasingly negative light as the novel goes on. While he initially appears to be a naive but sympathetic idealist, after the creature’s narrative Frankenstein begins to resemble—even in his own telling—the thoughtlessly cruel figure the creature represents him as.

College Admission: What is you identity, tell us about yourself?

My culture and my passion for acting is what defines me as a person. To begin, I must further explain who I am; I was born in Puerto Rico, a minuscule island in the Caribbean. My first language was Spanish, however I was educated enough to speak English, though it was not as well-developed as it should have been. As problems arose in my home country, my parents decided it was best for us to move to the United States where we would be safer. Nonetheless, I struggled when it came to speaking proper English around my teachers and caustic classmates.

The experience only galvanized me to learn and understand the language, so I would quickly catch up to my peers. In fact, I joined my middle school’s theater program solely for that purpose, I knew that through acting and reading linguistic and complex scripts I would be able to learn the language quickly. As a result, acting became my passion, I devoted most of my life to being on the stage or in front of a camera thus allowing me to speak English superlatively. I acted in more than 18 plays and a short film, as well as directing a play and writing a short film by the time I began my senior year.

Moreover, during my junior year, I applied to compete in my school’s competition which resulted in my advancing to the Dallas Shakespeare competition, later ending with me taking home the 3rd place award. However, my success with the English language did not mean that I had forgotten where I was from. As I learned about the difficulties the people of my ethnicity were facing I knew I wanted to take action, thus provoking me to create my school’s first, Latino Student Union.

The LSU serves as a cultural group open to all to discuss topics of importance relevant to all Hispanics/ Latinos, in addition, it also serves as a community service opportunity. We as a group represent our culture by helping those in need, and create a voice. I hope to continue influencing and helping my peers learn more about the Hispanic culture beyond high school. I strive to continue acting as I grow, as well as representing my culture in the form of service and speaking.

This is my identity, this is me.

What is an Introduction?

An introduction is a way of saying “hello” and starting a conversation. It can be as simple as saying your name and asking someone how they are doing. This is an informal or casual way to introduce yourself. It works best with people you meet outside of a work setting.

In some cases, you may want to give more information about yourself in your introduction. For example, you may need to give a presentation, attend a job interview, or networking event. In these cases, you may want to talk more about who you are and what you do. This will require a more formal or professional introduction.

1. Introduce Yourself in Conversation

Let’s start with some basic phrases for introducing yourself.

These expressions are useful for starting a conversation when you meet someone new.

“Hi, my name is _______. I don’t think we’ve met before!”

“Nice to meet you. I’m _______(name). How are you?”

“I’m great, thanks. And you?”

These phrases are all straightforward and easy to remember. You can use them in almost any situation where you need to introduce yourself.

You could also give information about what you do, for example,

“Hi, my name is Caitriona. I am your English teacher . What is your name?”

“Hi everyone, my name is Sarah. I’m from Canada, and I like to play tennis and travel. I’m taking this class to improve my grammar and speaking skills.

“Hello, my name is John. I am moving to the United States for my studies. I like to play basketball and listen to music. I’m taking this class to improve my listening skills.”

Remember, when introducing yourself in class, be clear and concise. Try to avoid rambling on and on about topics that are not relevant.

If you are a teacher and you want to introduce yourself, you can say:

“Hello, my name is _____. I am your _____ teacher.”
“Hi everyone, I’m _____. I’ll be your teacher this semester.”
“Good morning/afternoon/evening class. My name is _____, and I’ll be teaching you _____.”

3. Introduce Yourself in an Essay

If you need to write an essay about yourself, start by brainstorming ideas of what they are looking for. Write down an outline of important information or points that you would like to include in the essay.

Once you have brainstormed some ideas, it’s time to start writing. Begin with a brief introduction that tells the reader about you and the essay’s purpose. Then, add a few sentences to each section of the outline, if required. Remember to proofread your work for grammar mistakes before you submit it.

Example of a Basic Essay Introduction:

“My name is _____and I am from _____. I am currently a student at the University of _____, studying _____. In my free time, I enjoy _____. I work in _____. I am also a member of the _____ club/organization. I am interested in _____. I am hardworking and attentive to detail. In the future, I hope to _____.”

In this example, the student has given information about themselves, their studies, responsibilities, and hobbies. They have also included some information about their future goals. Feel free to include anything else that is relevant to your introduction, such as character traits or skills.

4. Introduce Yourself in a Job Interview

If you need to introduce yourself in a job interview, start by researching the company and the role you are applying for. This will help you to understand what they are looking for in a candidate.

When you go into the interview, make sure to have a firm handshake and make eye contact with the interviewer. Smile and give them your name. It is also a good idea to have an “elevator pitch” prepared. This is a short summary of your skills and experience that you can give to the interviewer if they ask for it.

In these examples, the speakers have given their names and a brief overview of who they are and what they do.

Connect with the person you are talking to and build the foundation of your relationship.

“The _____ looks delicious. Have you tried it?”
“I see you work for _____. Do you happen to know _____? He works in the finance department. “

Be aware of your body language. Stand up straight, make eye contact, and smile. These nonverbal cues will show that you are confident and approachable in many western countries .

Tips for Introducing Yourself

Here are some tips to help you make a great first impression:

Be Culturally Aware

People from foreign countries have different ways of introducing themselves, for example, gift-giving, bowing, or kissing both cheeks. If you are introducing yourself abroad, learn about the culture before you go and respect their customs.

Be Approachable

When you meet someone new, you may want to give the impression that you are friendly and approachable. Avoid looking at your phone or fidgeting while the other person is talking. In many Western countries, smiling and making eye contact shows that you are interested in talking to them.

One of the most important things when introducing yourself in English is to be polite. You can do this by using phrases like “thank you for speaking with me” or “it’s nice to meet you.”

Dallas is a city of characters. Let me introduce them — and myself

Growing up, I never wrote about Dallas. I understood this city as the place you launched from, not the place you wrote about. I had imaginary interviews with Rolling Stone and People where I patiently explained how I’d fled Dallas as soon as I could, because that’s what the plucky protagonists did in the movies. A young innocent must forge into the unknown to discover the world beyond (let’s say) NorthPark mall and Pancho’s Mexican Buffet.

I came to understand this as the “hero’s journey,” a term coined by Joseph Campbell and made legendary by George Lucas, but I wonder if part of my resistance to seeing Dallas as a place for writers is that, well, I didn’t know any. My friends’ dads were real-estate developers and lawyers, while my own father worked for the EPA. Our family moved from the Philadelphia area to Dallas in 1978, the boom time, and we rented a small cottage in the Park Cities, having no idea what that meant. I carried my Dillard’s purse through hallways dotted with Gucci and Louis Vuitton. My mother was a social worker, but most of the other mothers stayed home, drove carpool, joined the Junior League.

I went to college in Austin, the slacker Valhalla of the ‘90s, but I returned to Dallas in my late 20s and became the music editor at the Dallas Observer . I watched local bands over endless pints at the Barley House and Double Wide, and I thought the best of the upstarts deserved a much bigger audience: Carter Albrecht (RIP), Trey Johnson (RIP), John Dufilho (thank you for sticking around) . But I figured anyone who wanted to matter had to push off their barstool and leave Dallas — so I did.

I spent six years in New York, four more than I’d promised myself. I ran the personal essays section at Salon , an online pioneer that hit turbulence after the economic crash of 2008, along with the entire media landscape. I experienced my own crash: I quit drinking in 2010 and moved back to Dallas the following year.

I figured that move was temporary. But cheap rent is nothing to sniff at, and over the next decade, I came to see this city was well worth chronicling. I wrote a column about beauty culture for D Magazine called “The Smart Blonde.” I wrote a best-selling memoir about drinking called Blackout . I did a Texas Monthly podcast about the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders called America’s Girls . My best stories came to me because I lived here, not somewhere else.

“A hero’s journey” is about launching outward, but it’s also about circling back. People talk less about that part: The return. You trace your orbit of derring-do till you land in the place where you started with more wisdom, more bruises and, if you’re like me, more credit card debt. But it strikes me as nuts I didn’t write about Dallas for so long. Consider the legends: Mark Cuban, George W. Bush, Jerry Freaking Jones.

Say what you will about this place, but we have characters. People may be our richest asset. It took a while for an arts nerd like me to recognize the value of a sports town: Luka, Dak and Adolis aren’t just amazing athletes; they’re amazing stories. Troy Aikman, Dirk Nowitzki, Michael Irvin — I’ve run into these guys at the gym (well, I saw Aikman once). But sports aren’t our only saga. We have music and megachurches: Erykah Badu, Robert Jeffress, T.D. Jakes. We have political firebrands: Glenn Beck, Harlan Crow, Stormy Daniels. And I haven’t even mentioned the galas and charity balls where social butterflies and billionaires likely swap funny anecdotes about private jets in line for the bathroom. From a writer’s perspective? What we have here is a land grab.

When Christopher Wynn suggested I take a gig at The Dallas Morning News covering big personalities and lively scenes, I was skeptical. I’ve spent the past years as a freelancer, the media equivalent of a feral cat, but I also knew this was part of my problem. I lived in Dallas, technically, but I wasn’t living in Dallas. I placed Texas Theatre screenings and Arts & Letters Live events on my Google calendar, and I watched Netflix instead, too tired from the solitary grind to brave traffic. But when he said, “High Profile,” I thought we might be onto something.

High Profile was the splashy section I read whenever it was lying around our living room. My father, who peddled all three local papers growing up in Detroit, is a news junkie who continues to pay a premium to turn the pages of this crinkly broadsheet. But High Profile disappeared, another casualty of the tectonic shift in media. The internet took news out of our hands, plunked local stories into the vast ocean of Facebook and iPhone alerts while sinking the economic model for nearly every paper that wasn’t The New York Times . But I couldn’t help thinking this was part of the problem for us, too, as a country: We argued across state lines about faraway scandals and triumphs, but what about our own? We have so many.

This brand of coverage is a blast from the past, but it’s also a reinvention. Glamour, yes, but also grit. Your local dynamo, your barista who knows Deep Ellum better than any guidebook. For me, the High Profile relaunch is an excuse to be an explorer in my hometown. To forge into strip malls and suburbs and tony sections of Dallas as well as neighborhoods where folks park trucks on their lawns. I hope to bring news of these characters to subscribers of The Dallas Morning News , and though subscribing to anything — a newspaper, a music service, Paramount+ — has become a modern irritant, the all-access policies of the early aughts replaced by the paywalls demanding credit card info, I hope you’ll join me.
