There are several hobbies which one may pursue, such as photography, stamp collecting, reading, etc. A hobby should be pursued according to one’s nature of work and aptitude.

Certain hobbies such as photography are very expensive. Hobbies like gardening require hard physical work. Reading requires some serious intellectual exercise.

My hobby is stamp collecting. Every country in the modern world issues stamps off and on. Stamps are used to commemorate the birthday of renowned personalities of the nation, to mark some important events, and so on others occasions.

Stamps are of different colors, sizes, and designs. They contain pictures of birds, persons, animals, plants, factories, etc. They mention their fiscal value and sometimes dates, months, and years.

There are several philately societies concerned with the activity of stamp collecting. I’m a member of one such society known as the Indian Philately Society.

I have about five thousand postage stamps. I have arranged them in albums according to the countries belonging to different continents. I have also made a list of stamps of different kinds such as scenery, birds, animals, people, scientific inventions, and discoveries, those relating to historical and geographical spheres, etc. I’m happy with my collection of stamps and very proud of them too.

I believe that sports play an important role in the physical and mental development of an individual and everyone should participate in sports in order to be healthy and physically fit. I consider cycling as my favorite pastime and this sport is very important to me. I believe that cycling can be regarded as one of my qualities as I have participated in different competitions and in certain cases, I achieved a lot.

Cycling can be considered as my pastime, but I do cycling in order to be physically fit. Furthermore, I believe in the fact that cycling helps me a lot to overcome certain personal challenges that are associated with my life. Cycling energizes a lot and vitalizes the entire body and mind.

I believe that after cycling one can concentrate more on the studies and that is the reason why I have regarded cycling as one of the qualities. Lance Armstrong is my sporting hero and I have actually learned a lot from Lance Armstrong. This inspirational personality has actually developed my interest in cycling.

Just two hours of cycling can easily nourish your mind and it can have certain positive effects on your soul as well. Cycling can easily be related to my personal attributes and it gives a soothing effect to my entire personality and my overall outlook.

I learned about how people lived in bygone days of magic and mystery. I learned about the wonders of the world, space travel, human achievements, gigantic whales, tiny viruses, and other fascinating things of our world.

The wonderful thing about reading is that I do not have to learn things the hard way. For example, I do not have to catch a disease to know that it can make me stick to bed for days or even kill me. I know the danger so I can avoid it. Also, I do not have to go deep into the jungle to learn about the tiger. I can read all about it in a book. Books provide the readers with so much information and facts. They have certainly helped me in my daily life. I am better equipped to cope with living. Otherwise, I would go about ignorantly learning things the hard way. Reading helps me in many ways. My general knowledge has increased. I participated and won many quiz contests, science contests with the help of my hobby. It improves my grammar and vocabulary. My hobby helps me in my studies also. I always get distinctions in my subjects. So I continue to read. Besides being more informed about the world, I also spend my time profitably. It is indeed a good hobby.

A hobby is an interesting thing. It gives great joy. It makes life lively. It is something done in spare time. It is not done for money.

Kite-flying is my hobby. I like it very much. I have a good collection of kites. There are kites of many shapes and sizes. They are of many colors.

Kites are made of thin paper and bamboo strips, A special string is used in flying kites it is a popular hobby. Kite-flying matches are held at the sea beach.

On Sundays, I fly kites. I do it from the top roof of my house. It is very delightful to see kites flying in the clear, blue sky. It soothes our eyes.

Sometimes I go to the riverfront with my friends. There we enjoy kite-flying. Many elderly people also come there. They are skilled kite-fliers.

Gardening is my other hobby. There is a beautiful garden in my house. I have divided this garden into two parts.

In one part I grow flowers of different varieties. I look after the plants and water them daily.

I keep the spot neat and clean. I have four plants of tomatoes in any garden. Daily I pluck two or three tomatoes and eat them raw. They are very tasty.

My garden is very useful to me. I use my pocket money for hobbies.

I have got a number of hobbies such as story-telling and gardening. I take delight in telling stories of fairy godmothers and others. Wherever I find a story, I read it out to the children. They feel overjoyed to hear such rare stories. I love children very much and therefore I try to collect and read out as many new stories as I can. It is my hobby to learn stories and to narrate them to the children. In my home, you will find more than a hundred books on stories of different types. All these stories I have read out at least once. Now I can tell you tales from Greece, Rome or ancient Egypt, whichever you like. I know stories from ancient India as well. I think like a child who loves tales. In addition to the storytelling. I love gardening. This is the hobby which I have reserved for my spare time. I pass my spare time gardening. I have got a big bungalow, where my parents reside. All around the bungalow, there are plants of flowers and fruit trees. I am the person who has planted all these flowers. I water and manure them and look after them. I am a student of Agriculture and thus know all these things. I take special delight in planting flowers. Hobbies remove all our fatigue and worries. They prove to be our best companions. Hobbies are good for every person. I know one of my neighbours who sing and dances when he is free. I saw him in his moments when he was extremely happy. I wanted to know the source of his happiness and it was nothing but his deep interest in singing and dancing that I noticed in him.

I also like to sing and dance, but everyone can’t pursue the same hobby to the same extent. I cannot find so much pleasure out of singing and dancing as I do from gardening, photography, and other pastimes that I have already mentioned. Different tastes are the basis of all of them. My hobby is a very useful pursuit and it not only delights me, but it delights many others also.

Then there are books written by stalwarts like Jiddu Krishnamurty, Sri Aurobindo, S. Radhakrishnan, etc. which have filled me with hope and pleasure. These great thinker-philosophers have been successfully redeeming my faith in mankind. I have the same feeling when I read about everyday incidents of communal harmony and religious tolerance I feel proud of my country when I read about young people who have achieved great heights in fields of science, management, arts, etc.

Reading besides providing emotional satisfaction, also gives valuable information about people, places, and objects. It is through books that I have visited many foreign countries, traveled in spaceships, had conversations,s and gained insight into the thoughts of the world leaders.

Indeed reading for me is more than a hobby. it is a passion, that I can never leave.

Last but not least, it is worth pointing out that we should never ride a hobby too hard. We should not make a toil of pleasure. In other words, we should not indulge in a hobby to such an extent as to convert it into a dull and cheerless task. A hobby should be regarded just as a mental recreation.

If I were to pick one favourite hobby of mine out of the many I have, I will definitely pick gardening. I developed a taste for dancing when I was very young. I have several hobbies, but the one that makes me the happiest and gives a lot of mental freshness is reading storybooks. I love to read adventure stories and stories on animals and science fiction. Some of my favourite storybooks are Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe, The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells, The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling, The Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard Pyle, and Man-Eaters of Kumaon by Jim Corbett. I am now looking forward to reading more books especially, Moby Dick by Herman Melville and fiction written by Ruskin Bond. Whenever I get some leisure time I read a book and that’s why exam breaks are my favourite.

I have another hobby- making recycled toys and origami. I use old, broken toy parts to make miniature aeroplanes and cars and watch a lot of origami videos on Youtube to make my own paper toys and craft items. I also like to write about my toys and origami items on my blog that my mother helped me to create two years ago. I keep doing these two activities- reading storybooks and making craft items in my free times alternatively so that I never get bored. In fact, my hobbies give wings to my imagination!

My aim in life is to become a globetrotter. And in the pages of the storybooks, I already get to visualize many beautiful places. I wish to travel a lot someday and write down my experiences in a blog. For that, I think my hobby of reading storybooks is going to help me significantly. Reading broadens the horizon of thinking of a person, improves vocabulary and cultivates sensitivity towards people of different cultures. A good book can guide one in the right direction in his journey of life. In fact, it has been proved that the mind of a reader is more concentrated and focussed about various aspects of life.

When the mind is focussed, it has the capability to be more attentive in practical situations of life. As a result, the body and mind of such people remain calm; they look at the problem objectively and are better decision makers.

Additionally, reading improves memory as when one reads a book, he/she has to remember an assortment of characters, their backgrounds, ambitions, history, and nuances, as well as the various arcs and sub-plots. The Indian cricket team selects its players through the BCCI’s zonal selection policy. In this policy, there is one selector for each of the five zones, and the BCCI appoints one member as the chairman of the selection committee.

The Traditional Way

If you are a normal player hopeful of getting selected in India Cricket Team one day, then the traditional procedure for you is to begin from playing in your school or club level cricket team. Not only that, you must also make a mark by playing in local tournaments and get noticed. If you play good enough, you will be selected for the under 13 cricket team of your district. Remember this all has to happen during your early teens.

Today, man lives in a world where strenuous struggles and efforts are necessary to for survival. He works like a Trojan from dawn to dusk. Physical and mental exertions leave him utterly exhausted and enervated. The invariable drudgery of daily routine rusts. In the words of Coleridge, his “Shaping spirit of imagination”. He needs some pleasing pursuits to sooth this stress and strain. Such pleasant activities that fill our idle hours are called hobbies.

Different people take different hobbies to effect. Though there are various things I do at the leisure moments, the thing that attracts all of my attention is gardening. Francis Bacon in his essay ”Of Garden” says “God Almighty first planted a garden. And, indeed it is the purest of human pleasures”. Thus this hobby of mine is the ultimate source of joy and pleasure for me. It invigorates both my body and soul. It breathes a new life into my lethargic and lazy body. Gardening or growing plants is exciting activity. The gardeners generate lovely landscape, flagrant flowers, fresh fruits and tall trees. Today elaborate and decorative gardens have become part and parcels of elegant houses. Gardening for pleasure has become pervasive pursuit all over the world. One needs a little soil, small seeds and e few basic tools to grow a garden.

I delve deep and carry out radical research before selecting a plant to grow. Range of plants available is remarkably rich. The nurseries offer constantly new varieties. Plants differ in tolerance for heat, cold and moisture. Before sowing and growing a plant, I take into account the climate it needs. I evaluate the soil type, the sunlight that falls on the proposed site and may other such factors that can affect the growth of plant. I also consider the life cycle of plant before growing.

I have divided my garden into various sections. Its main oriental section provides a wonderful vista. Then it has seating area for recreation, a vegetable plot, a children’s play area, walkways and many other eye-catching features. While planting my garden, I have kept in view the blending and contrast of colours. I have grown such plants that give maximum display of colors in summer. But I have never ignored such plants that that bloom in early spring. I have grown flowering and shrubs along the walkways.

Fertile soil is indispensable for the growth of a luxuriant garden. Plants obtain nutrients from soil for their healthy growth. Most plants thrive in a soil type known as loam. It contains 50 percent sand, 25 percent clay and 25 percent silt. All soils do not have a right balance of nutrients. Moreover plants consume nutrients from the soil as they grow. Therefore I use fertilizers to maintain and enhance the productivity of the soil.

Before sowing seeds, I till the soil by various methods. I turn the soil with a spade and at times loosen it with a garden fork. Then I rake it smooth before planting. To keep the soil loose, I cover it with compost. Seeds are sown close together. When the seedlings are several inches tall, I remove extra ones so that the remaining seedlings are evenly spaced. Sometimes I opt to use transplants. I purchase young plants from nurseries. It gives the garden a head start. I cover each transplant with a plastic soda bottle with the bottom cut off. It acts like a small greenhouse to trap heat around the plant. I place transplants in a large bottomless box with a clear top. It is called a cold frame. The sunlight passes through the top and heats the air in the cold frame.

Water is as vital for plants as it is for the other organisms. It is essential for plants’ biochemical reactions. It also stores the dissolved water nutrients. The best method of watering the plants is to apply water directly to the soil. Water should be applied directly so that it may percolate into the soil properly and no amount of it is wasted. This is how I water the plants.

Three types of pests can plague gardens. They are weeds, insects and disease. I pull up weeds by hand or dig them out with a hoe or cut them off with a mover. Sometimes, I use a weed killer, or herbicides to control the weeds. Some insects can be kept in check by introducing beneficial insects to the garden. Insect pests can also be reduced by growing a variety of plants in the garden. Diseases caused by fungi can damage plants. Some fungal diseases can be controlled with a fungicide. To provide plants with optimum soil, nutrients, light and water is the best approach to prevent diseases. I employ all these methods to save may garden from diseases.

I do my best to control the shape of shrubs and trees. I prune the branches growing in the wrong direction. I also remove the diseased or dead branches. In this way, I keep the plants in attractive shapes. In short I keep my garden perfect in all aspects. I love to work and sit there. It has proved to be a heaven of serenity and tranquility for me.

Similar is the case with me, as I need to devote a huge amount of time to my studies, entrance exam preparations, and coaching. However, I ensure that I spare at least 30 minutes a day to dance. Dancing relieves me of the day’s stress and I feel energetic to swiftly finish all tasks at hand. I am a good dancer, and have been awaredec various prizes in school for my wins in different competitions.

Out of my many interests, I would call reading my favourite hobby. I like to read for fun. Reading not only makes us happy but also broadens our understanding. Reading is a crucial activity that aids in developing skills and is beneficial. A good book makes us happy and also expands our knowledge. I make sure that I read at least for an hour everyday, which is usually before going to bed. Reading at bedtime not only relaxes my mind, but also welcomes a good night’s sleep.

Expands Knowledge | We know that reading books broadens our understanding of various topics. Different books touch upon different themes. Some educate us in Hindi, while others instruct us in Math or English.

Gives Peace | There is no physical exercise involved in reading books; instead, it is a very relaxing habit. It can be carried out in total silence and promotes inner tranquilly.

Fosters Imagination | Reading is a great way to improve our imagination, since, it is natural for human beings to create visuals in their mind of what they read in text. So, the more one reads, the more they imagine.

If I have to choose one out of all my hobbies, I will choose cricket. One of the most well-known sports in India is cricket. It is one of the sports practised widely in practically every country. The equipment needed for this activity is a wooden bat and a ball. There are two teams in this game, each with eleven players. The goal of this game is to score the most runs possible. This game is played outside on a field maintained explicitly for the occasion.

I have many interests, but I enjoy playing cricket the most. It also keeps me energised and helps me feel stronger and healthier. My interest in cricket began when I was just five years old. I was drawn to it as a sport and was enthralled by this activity. I used to be so hurried when I got home from school that I would play cricket right after eating my supper. I was a well-known student-athlete at the school.

Dhoni: My Inspiration

Like many other people, I was inspired to start playing by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, former Indian cricket team captain. My goal is to play like Dhoni. Even though I’m generously appreciated by my spectators during my matches, I am usually never delighted. I've always aimed to outperform myself. Everyone can have a hobby which rejuvenates them.
Some people enjoy reading, some like collecting old coins and stamps and there are some who enjoy colouring, sketching and drawing as their favourite pastime.
My favourite hobby is drawing and colouring as it makes me feel happy.
