The idea of having a dream house someday fills me with excitement. It will be one place that will be solely mine– a place I can rest, unwind and call my own. 

When I think of where this dream house would be situated, I can only envision the cold and peaceful mountains. I have been to hills and mountains during many treks. It's one place that offers me the most joy. The happiness of walking on the side of the curvy, narrow roads and stopping at a small food stall to have a hot cup of tea and noodles makes me feel alive. Life feels simpler there. 

My dream house would ideally be small. I don't have the desire to live in a gigantic mansion with all the worldly and materialistic amenities. Although it would be small, it would have hundreds of plants– both inside and outside. My kitchen will be my happy place, where I will always keep everything stocked. The balcony will have a little hammock where I could read a book and get lost in the fictional world.

I would love to have this dream house as soon as possible, maybe in the next year or two. It's only about attaining financial stability and a job I love, and then I can move to my house in the mountains!

The day I move would perhaps be the happiest day of my life. This house will be perfect for me because I have thought of every aspect of it, in incredible detail, over and over. It'll be a house made of love and tranquillity, with a house cat running around to give me company!

In conclusion, my dream house, a harmonious blend of comfort, aesthetic appeal, and functionality, represents more than just a physical structure; it's a sanctuary that echoes my personality, values, and aspirations. Envisioned as a place of tranquility, inspiration, and warmth, it serves as a haven where memories are made and cherished. From its eco-friendly design to the cozy, inviting spaces, each element of this house contributes to an atmosphere of peace and happiness. In describing my dream house for this IELTS Cue Card, I not only share a personal vision but also articulate a future aspiration, showcasing my ability to communicate complex ideas and emotions effectively in English. Describe Your Dream House: IELTS Cue Card

Ever since I was young, I always thought that growing up would be so exciting. For one, it would involve having a house of my own, my dream house. A place that is just mine, where I can host the people I love and always be authentically myself. 

My dream house will be a beach house. So, every morning, I would first pull the curtains away from the life-size windows and watch the waves hitting the shore. I imagine the noise of crashing waves to be rhythmic and peaceful. Moreover, the idea of sitting on the porch while the salty winds rush through the tangles of my hair sounds beautiful to me.  

The house would ideally be big enough for me, my parents and my friends if they ever want to stay. I want to be the person whose house is always open for loved ones to stay over. It would have an all-blue theme to match the seaside atmosphere. I also envision a lot of artwork hanging on the walls of my house.

I think no other place would come close to being perfect for me than this one. I am a water baby, and I love the feel of sand under my feet. Moreover, I will personalize this space to match my taste and comfort. I will also add a library room.

If it were up to me, I would want to buy my dream house today. That said, it's not financially possible, so I will strive to work hard and gain stability in my life to have it one day.

My dream home will be large and spacious. I want my house to be built on a mountain with as many green materials as possible to help protect the environment. I also want my house to be located away from the hustle and bustle of a big city, but not too far from civilization. This house style, which I believe suits my personality, is more antique and sophisticated, with a touch of simplicity and aesthetic. The house will have beautiful interiors and all of the amenities, such as a kitchen, three bathrooms, a staircase leading to the terrace, and a bonfire place.

My backyard would be open and have a view of the mountain and valleys. There would be a bonfire in the centre surrounded by chairs, and a barbeque place. I want a swimming pool and a jacuzzi in my backyard.

My room would be the biggest one out of the 5 rooms I want in my home. It would have black coloured walls and blue curtains. There would be a small bed for my dog in the corner of my room. I want to have a common room where everyone can sit and watch TV, spend some quality time with the family and have a huge wooden dining table in the corner of the room.

This vision of a home is perfect for me because it aligns with my love for nature and my desire for a tranquil space. Answer:- In India, the type of housing people live in largely depends on the region and socio-economic status. The growing middle class in cities is also increasingly moving towards apartment living for amenities like security and community features. Answer:- In India, both renting and owning property have their place. For young professionals or those who frequently move due to job assignments, renting is often more feasible. In cities, the high real estate prices also make renting a popular choice for many. However, owning a home is a deeply ingrained cultural aspiration in India, and many work towards this long-term goal, valuing it as a symbol of stability and success.

Answer:- Certainly, living in a foreign country has always piqued my interest. I am fascinated by the idea of immersing myself in a new culture, language, and way of life. Such experiences broaden horizons and provide opportunities for personal growth. Given the chance, I would love to reside abroad for a few years, not just for professional prospects but also for the enriching life lessons it would offer.

Answer:- Modern home design in India markedly differs from the past. Historically, Indian homes emphasized courtyards and open spaces, facilitating communal living. Today, with urbanization and space constraints, homes have become more compact. Modern designs lean towards minimalism and functionality. Additionally, while traditional homes were built with local materials, contemporary ones incorporate global influences, blending Indian aesthetics with international trends.

The idea of having a dream house brings joy and happiness. The dream will be solely for me to chill, rest and rejuvenate.

I would love to have my dream house around mountains and water streams. I would want to have a small house with basic amenities. The house will be around a lot of greenery.

My dream home will not be very modern, and I would design it to reflect the old architectural style. I prefer to have a large space on the balcony to sit and enjoy nature. The house will have 2 rooms. 1 room will be solely dedicated to making a library.

Nowadays, my whole week is very hectic, which sometimes gets hectic and stressful. I prefer to stay at the dream house during my holidays and weekends and relish the environment.

The day my dream house is built will be the happiest day of my life. It will be a house made out of love and a house where cats will run around.

When you work hard, the first priority that comes to your mind is a house. Similarly, even I envision having a dream house for my family.  

I have spent all my life in a small house on the narrow roads of Banaras. Since I shifted to Mumbai for job opportunities, I have always dreamt of having a house in Mumbai. 

I imagine my dream house to be a 4-bedroom house with all the modern amenities. The area of the apartment should preferably be in a posh area. The accessibility of all the requirements should be easy.

I would shift to my dream house when I have stability in financial requirements and settled in a job. This house can change my lifestyle forever.

Getting a house in Mumbai will fulfil one of my bucket list wishes. The dream house will change my lifestyle and bring my family more happiness, prosperity and growth.

In the past, homes were more spacious and not equipped to handle the latest electronic gadgets and equipment, like washing machines, microwaves, dishwashers & so on.

Answer. India is a vast and diverse country. People live in different types of houses, depending on the area and the climate. For instance, houses made from bamboo in eastern India are very common. In regions where there is snowfall, sloped houses are common. 

Q. Do young people in your country like to live with their parents or by themselves?

Answer. In my country, young people prefer to live with their parents. When they have to move to another city or country for higher education or better career prospects, it’s part of the Indian culture for children to live with their parents.

The IELTS speaking test is of a relatively more minor duration than other IELTS test parts. However, the weightage of the score band is equally divided among all the test sections: writing, reading, listening and speaking.

I am a student, and constructing such a house requires a boatload of money. Therefore, I have given myself six years. It is ideal for me because, since childhood, I have dreamed of living an opulent lifestyle in the countryside instead of a city. However, I am an urban dweller, and traffic congestion and air pollution are pressing problems for me. By shifting to the countryside, I will maintain good physical health by avoiding pollution because, in villages, you get clean and pristine air.

Short Version

My current house is sufficient for me and my family. But like anyone else, I would like to have some more features in the house. So in future, I want to have house located in less crowded area. The streets of localiaty should be wide enough for a car.

Exterior of house should be painted white. There should be a shady tree just outside the main gate of house. I want at least 4 bedrooms, one kitchen, store room, living room, attached bathrooms and a balcony on first floor. The living room must be spacious so that my all family member can join and stay together in the living room for talking or watching TV.

The interior must appear luxurious, with brown polished wooden furniture, square design glass tables, wall mounted wardrobes and coloured glass fittings. Electricity, water and AC fittings must be done underground. Since we all family members feel it a blessing to have dinner together, so I want a big dining table close to the kitchen where we can comfortably stay connected over meal. I would prefer modern and latest kitchen and other household items like a 42 inch LED, 3-door refrigerator.

Apart from this, I believe that a small yard with plantation will enhance the beauty of house where I would grow vegetables and flower plants. Besides, I also want sufficient space for parking the car and scooter in the house. I would like to have CCTV camera installed, and also theft alarm system in this house.

This house would be incomplete without my family so my family would fill this house with charm, love and joy.

So this is my dream house.

The basic feature of a house is to provide shelter, safety, security and privacy however nowadays, modern technologies has made us desire for strongly built houses which include modern designs, household technologies, security, comfort with an added appearance of luxury. Old houses are being replaced with modern house buildings.

My current house is, no doubt, sufficient for me and my family. But like anyone else, I would like to have some more features in the house. So in future, I want to have house located in less crowded area, like away from bustling city, most preferably close to the city suburbs.

It would be better if house is fronting the main road, because in that case, I would not need to go through narrow colony roads to get on to the main road.

I would want a small bungalow with a garden in the backyard. I am fond of gardening and I will use the garden to grow plants like tomatoes, chilly, lemons, spinach, and a variety of flowers. I will also own a dog which will surely enjoy the huge garden space and run around as he pleases.

Once I start earning well, I will pay occasional monthly visits to the place to get the work done as per my requirements. When I finally secure a stable financial position, I shall move here permanently, and spend my days in a clean and beautiful surrounding.

The hustle and bustle of city life make a person really stressed, and one has no time to rejuvenate. Owning a place in the hilly areas will ensure peace and tranquillity, and I shall also be away from unhealthy air, which is a major health hazard in cities these days. It will be the most ideal place for me, to spend time with my family for the rest of my days.

Describe an ideal house/ Describe a perfect house you saw

So I have been living in a 4-storeyed house for the last twenty years. It seemed fine at first, but as time went by, I gradually realised that there are many things about this house that I don’t like. For example, the stair is so steep that I’m almost always out of breath when I reach my room on the third floor. I want to move somewhere else.

I have to say I prefer a high-rise flat to a house. This is mainly because the air there is fresher and there are fewer mosquitos, which are a terrible nuisance by the way. My ideal flat would be on the 20th floor or so, overlooking the whole neighbourhood. It would have a spacious living room, a fully-fitted kitchen, three bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms.

The living room would need to be large enough to accommodate about 30 people, because I often invite friends over or throw small parties . I would like my sofa to be comfy and big enough to lie in and sleep. The walls have to be sound-proof as I can’t deal with noise; I must have a quiet environment to work or relax.

• Steep: (of a slope) rising or falling at a sharp angle: Eg: The tent is set up on a steep mountain, where you can spot a breath-taking view. 
• Out of breath: gasping for air, typically after exercise.  Eg: After climbing the mountain, she was out of breath. 
• High-rise: tall modern building with many floors Eg: Rose lives in a high-rise apartment in the city. 
• Overlook:  to provide a view of,  especially from the above.  Eg: John’s house overlooks the valley. 
• Nuisance: someone or something that causes a problem for other people, an area, etc.   Eg: Sheela is such a nuisance that I hate her her company 
• Throw party: to host or hold a gathering.  Eg: John decided to throw a party to his friends. 
• Sound-proof: to prevent sound from coming into a room or building, or from being heard outside it  Eg: Rose was looking for a soundproof apartment. 

Sample Answer 2

I would want my ideal house to be comfy and spacious, and it should be located in a not-so-urban area with a peaceful and quiet atmosphere.

Painted in yellow and white, the house would somehow look like a little palace for a royal family. The natural glare of the sun is a must for this house and must contain an effective window system for good ventilation. The home would be equipped with air-conditioning and modern appliances for convenience and comfort. Flowers and trees would be planted around it to decorate and make it look captivating.

My ideal house, full of natural light and surrounded by many exquisite gardens, would be the perfect place for me when I need an escape from my heavy workload in the city. I would be able to relish the fresh air, and living there would be the perfect way to relieve stress.

Having the opportunity to live in such a place would be a dream come true for me, feeling like a king in his castle, and I hope that one day I can build a place like this to live in.

My dream is to live in a big house surrounded by a big garden full of flowers and trees. My house should be located outside the city, on the outskirts of town where I can find true peace and happiness. Therefore, my dream house should have the characteristics that represent who I am with its location as well as its interior and exterior design. From my point of view, the location of my house is very important and the surroundings and the design should be carefully considered.

I've always been fascinated by the sounds of the outdoors. I'd feel very lively every morning if I was woken up by the sound of doves perching on the branches of the trees in my yard. In this respect, I imagine my house

near a flowing river, built in the countryside. It would be located in such a place that I could find fresh water and air. Also, I'd like to be near to the center of a big city so that I will be able to go sopping when I needed to.

As a matter of fact, peace and harmony combined with nature would be the basic feature of the location of my dream house. The exterior of my home would have a long concreted circled driveway. I would have a lot of flower beds around my home with flowers of vibrant colors. I also would love to have a patio that wrapped around the front and the back of my 4500 square foot home. Also in the backyard I would love to have a in ground swimming pool, Jacuzzi, ball court, and a family gym. In my swimming pool a small bar built in the pool would be great, especially for the summer months. The interior of my home would consist of eight bedrooms, ten bathrooms, one living room, two dining, areas, one kitchen, one library, one playroom, and one office. My bedrooms would be adorned with rustic furniture, vibrant colors for the bedding with matching curtains and rugs. In each bedroom there would also be a huge spacious walk in closet.

All ten bathrooms would be furnished with Mexican art work on the walls and the counter tops around my tub, sink, and shower will be adorned with Mexican tiles. I also would like to have a humungous closet in each bathroom for storage, and a lot of cabinet space. My living room would be almost the biggest room in my home to accommodate a large family. It would need to have a lot of sitting area, a huge flat screen TV on the wall, a fireplace, and a theater style surround sound. In the two dining areas they would need to consist of tables and seating for around twenty people.

Kitchen area would be the biggest part of my dream home. I would like all appliances in my kitchen to metal and all matching. In the center of my kitchen would be an island that was spacious and one of my stoves would be placed at the end of the island. I would have barstools around part of the island so my

children could sit there and eat their breakfast every morning. I would need an enormous amount of cabinet and storage in my kitchen as well, so that I would have enough storage area for thing i would need in my kitchen. It would be stocked with all sorts of need cooking tools.

Family room

My family room, library, and play room will be where my books, games, Nintendo’s, will be stored. My office would need to be spacious, as i do not like to feel suffocated in small areas. I would have all new office furniture and equipment that would accommodate my working from home. All in All, I do not realistacally see myself having such a spacious and gorgeous home, but i still will strive for this so that maybe one day i will be able to afford my dream home. I enjoy visualizing about this extradinary home. I will always continue to have dreams and hopes.

My dream house is simple yet it is a house where I think I can live happily and comfortably with my family. I choose it to be made out of wood so that it would be environment-friendly and to be appropriate with the location near the lake. This concludes my dream house.

The house will also have a bathtub where I will play with squeeze toys, splashing water. There will be a pinboard next to my study table where I will put up positive thoughts. We will also have a small library that will stock many books. On the lawn, we will play throw and fetch balls. Lucky enjoys it when she fetches the ball for us. We will also play badminton. I love to play these two games. There will be a tea table under an umbrella with a few chairs on the lawn. We will have a nice time sipping juice while the elders take tea or coffee. At night, we will lie down and count stars in the sky. The whole family will have the best time in this house!

Prepositions.

Use these prepositions and phrases to describe where you live. You should review prepositions of place before writing this essay.

• I live in a small house/big apartment.
• The house is in/on a quiet street.
• It’s near/not far from the train station.
• There’s a garden behind the house.
• It’s a ten-minute walk to/from the town centre.

Note that when we say a ten-minute walk , a twenty-minute walk, etc.  we use a number + a hyphen ( – ) + the word minute in the singular.  

There is/are

Use there is/are to write about the things in or near your home.

Use there is with singular nouns. Use a before the singular noun. The negative form is there isn’t.

• There is a bus stop near the apartment.
• There isn’t a bath in the bathroom.

You can shorten there is to there’s .

• There’s a single bed in the guest bedroom.

Use there are with plural nouns. We often use some or a number before the noun.

• There are two bedrooms in the flat.
• There are some books on the shelf.

In negative sentences, we use any , NOT some .

• There aren’t any towels in the guest bedroom.

Has/Has got

You can also use has or has got to write about what is in the house. The negative form is doesn’t have or hasn’t got .

• The flat has WIFI. The flat doesn’t have WIFI.
• The house has got a garden. The house hasn’t got a garden.

You can use just or only when there are a small number of things. Look where just and only go in a sentence.

• There’s just one bedroom. / There’s only one bedroom.  
• The flat only has one bedroom. / The flat just has one bedroom
• The house has only got a shower, not a bath. /   The house has just got a shower, not a bath.

Use with to add extra information about a home, room, or piece of furniture.

• I live in a small house with a big garden.
• There’s a kitchen with three chairs.
• There’s a cupboard with five shelves.

Some useful adverbs

Start your sentence with one of these adverbs to talk about different parts of your home.

• Upstairs,   there are three bedrooms.
• Downstairs,   there is a kitchen and a living room.
• Inside,   there are five rooms.
• Outside,   there is a garden.

When we write about our homes we often include lists. Look at the list below.

• In the living room, there is a sofa, two armchairs and a television.
• we use there is because the first item on the list (a sofa) is singular.
• we use a comma ( , ) between the first items on the list. Before the last item, we write and .

To contrast between positive and negative things in a list, use but .

• The bathroom has a bath, a toilet and a washbasin, but it doesn’t have a shower.
• There’s a microwave, a washing machine and a fridge-freezer, but there isn’t a dishwasher.

One Thing Keeping Democrats Up at Night

The composition of the minority electorate in the United States is rapidly changing. This constituency was once dominated by Black voters loyal to the Democratic Party. Now, African- American clout has been eclipsed or at least threatened by Hispanic, Asian American and other nonwhite voters whose less firm loyalty to the Democratic Party lowers the party’s Election Day margins among people of color overall.

This multiracial, multiethnic population constitutes one third of the electorate, according to an article published by the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia’s, “ The Transformation of the American Electorate, ” which was written by Alan Abramowitz, a political scientist at Emory.

“Eight months out from the election, polls are still suggesting 2024 will be the largest racial realignment since the Civil Rights Act was passed,” Adam Carlson , a data analyst with the Brunswick Group, a corporate consulting firm, recently posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Three days later, John Burn-Murdoch , chief data reporter for the Financial Times, contended that “ American Politics Is Undergoing a Racial Realignment ”:

Many of America’s nonwhite voters have long held much more conservative views than their voting patterns would suggest. The migration we’re seeing today is not so much natural Democrats becoming disillusioned but natural Republicans realizing they’ve been voting for the wrong party.

Most recently, on March 15, the polling expert Nate Silver, citing Burn-Murdoch’s racial realignment article, posted “ Democrats Are Hemorrhaging Support With Voters of Color ” on his Substack.

These claims of a racial realignment in partisan politics have not gone unchallenged.

Brian Schaffner , a political scientist at Tufts who oversees data collection at the Cooperative Election Study , described his views in an email:

What I see is some fluctuation over the past two decades coinciding with unique presidential candidates, no major realignment. A lot of what people are prognosticating about is something that current polls suggest might happen in November, but at this point I don’t think we can say that there has been any kind of major shift yet.

Along similar lines, Jacob Grumbach , a political scientist at the University of Washington, replied by email to my inquiry about racial realignment:

The overall takeaway is that we’ve seen some Latino movement toward Trump in some parts of the country, and potentially some Asian American movement as well. It’s an important shift, but it’s uncertain how durable it is, and it’s not unseen in earlier periods, such as George W. Bush in 2004.

There was universal agreement among those I contacted that recent polling data is problematic for the Biden campaign, which is reflected in the RealClearPolitics analysis of the 13 most recent surveys, which in aggregate give Trump a 1.7 percentage percent lead over Biden, 47.2 to 45.5.

The debate is over whether the adverse trends for Democrats are long-lasting and structural or temporary vacillations unique to the current campaign.

Let’s take a look at the conflicting evidence.

Compare some of the results of the March 10-12 Economist/YouGov Poll of 1559 adults to those in the virtually simultaneous March 9-12 Civiqs/Daily Kos survey of 1324 registered voters.

YouGov found Biden leading Trump 68-15 among Black Americans, 47-36 among Hispanic Americans and 56-29 among 18-to-29-year-olds. Civiqs found much higher levels of support for Biden among Blacks (79-8) and Hispanics (71-17), but among 18-to-34-year-olds in the Civiqs survey, Trump had a substantial lead (49-36) over Biden.

Carlson has aggregated polling trends for subgroups by combining data collected in February 2024 from 10 polling firms to get an 11,288 sample size, including 1,134 Black voters, 1,161 Hispanic voters and 1,003 young voters aged 18 to 29.

The trends in these subgroups provide little comfort to the Biden campaign.

Among Black voters, Biden led Trump by 55 points (73-18), far less than his 83-point margin in 2020. Among Hispanics, Biden led by 6 points (48-42), compared with a 24-point advantage in 2020. Among 18-to-29-year-olds, Biden led by 8 points (50-42) compared with 24 points in 2020.

Despite the erosion of Black, Hispanic and youth support since 2020, Biden remained competitive in Carlson’s data compilation — just two points behind Trump (47-45) among all respondents. This was possible because Biden made modest gains among very large subgroups: 1.3 points among 2,014 white college graduates, 0.6 points among 2,103 non-college whites, 4 points among 923 voters 50 to 64, 1.8 points among the 2,208 65 and over.

In an email, Carlson voiced caution about drawing conclusions based on the aggregated polling data:

We’ve seen zero evidence in recent election results that young voters and Black voters are abandoning voting for Democrats, so all of this is speculation based on polling. Among Latinos the evidence is a bit more mixed, but there’s more electoral evidence from 2020 and some from 2022 that they could be moving right.

Carlson however, pointed to additional polling trends daunting to Democratic prospects.

Gallup reported on Feb. 7 that

in 2020 Black voters self-identified as +66 Democratic, and in 2023 they’re at +47. They find Hispanics at +12 Democratic now — an all-time low since 2011, but that decline has been more gradual. They’re also seeing a Democratic decline among age 18-29 year olds (+21 in 2020 to +8 in 2023).

I asked Carlson how he could justify using the word realignment to describe what’s been happening, since realignment suggests a full-scale partisan conversion of the country or of a major constituency, as in the 1932-36 realignment that saw the electorate go from majority Republican to majority Democratic, or the post-civil rights realignment that saw the white South go from majority Democratic to majority Republican.

Carlson responded:

If what we’re seeing in recent polls regarding shifts among young, Black and Latino voters ends up happening in November, in my view “realignment” is the right term. It won’t be like 1932 or 1964 where the parties essentially swapped coalitions for the New Deal and civil rights, respectively. Essentially it would be a continuation of the trends we saw in 2020 among Latinos, a sizable but not earth shattering shift among Black voters (though even in the most pessimistic assessments Biden will still win at least 75 percent of Black voters), and a shift to roughly even among younger voters from a strong Dem advantage.

Carlson then added this caveat: “For what it’s worth, I am skeptical that these swings will be this large once all is said and done in November, but that’s neither provable nor falsifiable until then.”

Data from the Cooperative Election Study, which conducts surveys of more than 50,000 voters every election cycle, do not support the case for a realignment of any major voting bloc.

The percentage of Black voters choosing Democratic House candidates does not reveal a consistent downward trend that would signal a slow-motion realignment. Instead, this measure of Black Democratic support shifts back and forth from lows of around 88 percent in 2010, 2016 and 2022 and highs of around 93 percent in 2008, 2012 and 2018.

Asian American support for Democratic House candidates fell from 75.4 percent in 2016 to 64.7 percent in 2022, but the 2022 level of support was higher than it was in the elections of 2008, 2010 2012 and 2014.

Hispanic support for Democratic House candidates fell from a high of 71.4 in 2018 to 59.6 percent in 2022, but the 2022 percentage was very similar to the margins from 2008 to 2012.

Perhaps most significantly, more detailed election study data breaking down voting trends by race, ethnicity and ideology shows that the defections of Black and Hispanic voters from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party are heavily concentrated among those who describe themselves as conservative.

An estimated 16 percent of Black voters are conservative, and from 2012, when Barack Obama was on top of the Democratic ticket, to 2022, their level of support for Democratic House candidates fell from 84.2 to 47.7 percent.

Some 32 percent of Hispanic voters identify themselves as conservative. From 2016 to 2022, their support for Democratic House candidates fell from 33.7 to 13.4 percent.

These trends among ideologically conservative minorities lend credence to Burn-Murdoch’s contention that

Matthew Blackwell , a political scientist at Harvard, contended that the trend Burn-Murdoch cited is less consequential than it appears to be on the surface:

Burn-Murdoch is correct in the column that Black conservatives are increasingly voting for Republicans, but this also misses how the Black electorate has changed since the Obama era. In 2014, 25 percent of Black voters reported themselves as “conservative” or “very conservative,” and 31 percent reported themselves as “liberal” or “very liberal.” In 2020, only 17 percent of Black voters put themselves in the conservative categories, and 41 percent put themselves into the liberal categories. So while the connection between ideology and voting has become stronger for Black voters over the last 10 years, the overall voting rate has not changed nearly as much.

There is evidence that a substantial share of Black, Hispanic and other voters from multiracial, multiethnic backgrounds oppose some elements of the Democrats’ liberal social and cultural agenda.

A Jan. 22-27 YouGov survey, for example, asked whether it was “morally acceptable or wrong to have a sexual relationship with someone of the same gender?” 44 percent of Black voters answered “morally wrong,” and 17 percent said “morally acceptable.”

The same morally acceptable versus morally wrong question was posed on the issue of identifying “with a gender different from the gender assigned at birth.” By 39 to 13, Black voters said it was morally wrong and Hispanics agreed, 30-15.

By even larger margins, both Black (51-17) and Hispanic (49-27) respondents opposed policies that allow “transgender athletes to play on sports teams that match their gender identity, rather than their sex assigned at birth.

These numbers suggest that some aspects of Democratic liberal orthodoxy contribute to the exodus of conservative minorities from the party.

Marc Hetherington , a political scientist at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, expanded on this line of analysis in an email:

Racial and ethnic minorities are out of step with white Democrats in their worldviews. The former are much more tradition-minded and authority-minded than the latter. White Democrats were enthusiastic about Sanders and Warren, who wanted to blow up the system. Minority Democrats were enthusiastic about Clinton and Biden whose programs tended to work within the present system. I suspect this divide has implications for Black and Hispanic men, in particular. For example, the source of traditional authority over generations has been men. However, Democratic leaders argue for greater gender equality, along with equality for all sorts for groups that have generally occupied lower rungs on the societal ladder. This is bound not to sit well with groups that have traditionally held power and influence.

In an email responding to my questions about minority voting, Emily West , a political scientist at the University of Pittsburgh, argued that “Nonwhite Americans who previously may have voted Democrat for identity-based reasons are increasingly likely to vote more sincerely according to their conservative ideology or policy preference, and thus vote Republican.”

West, Bernard L. Fraga and Yamil R. Velez , political scientists at Emory and Columbia, recently published “ Reversion to the Mean, or Their Version of the Dream? Latino Voting in an Age of Populism ,” in which they maintain that there have been

significant pro-Trump shifts among working-class Latinos and modest evidence of a pro-Trump shift among newly-engaged U.S.-born Latino children of immigrants and Catholic Latinos. These findings, coupled with an analysis of the 2022 C.E.S., point to a more durable Republican shift than currently assumed.

More specifically, Fraga, Velez and West show that the strongest shift to Trump was among Latinos holding conservative views on crime and punishment, holding restrictionist beliefs on immigration, those with the lowest education levels and those making the least amount of money.

These shifts do not, in the view of Frega, Velez and West, constitute a realignment.

“Well over a majority of Latinos still support Democrats, so I hesitate to call it a realignment, but there are segments of the population that have grown more fond of the G.O.P. over time,” Velez wrote in an email elaborating on the paper. “There is much stronger evidence that some segments of the Latino population such as conservatives have shifted toward the G.O.P. and will stay there, but I’m skeptical that this is a broad-based racial realignment.”

Fraga also replied by email to my inquiry: “There is indeed a shift toward Republicans among voters of color, but I would characterize it less as a ‘realignment’ and more a sort of ideological ‘sorting’ where the relatively small population of conservative voters of color are now voting for the party more closely aligned with their ideological preferences.”

The three authors conclude their paper by noting that

The Republican gains we describe align with two key processes shaping American politics: ideological sorting and educational polarization. Unlike the general population, these mechanisms have been notably delayed among Latino voters.

Eric Schickler , a Berkeley political scientist and the author of the 2016 book, “ Racial Realignment: The Transformation of American Liberalism, 1932-1965 ,” contended by email that “it is premature to say that there is a realignment among nonwhite voters, but the survey results suggest some erosion in Democratic support that is clearly worrisome for the party heading into 2024.”

The polling data “certainly suggests the possibility that something substantial could be happening,” Schickler continued. “I do not think one can just dismiss the evidence that Biden and the Democrats’ numbers with respect to nonwhite voters have been concerning for several months.”

Kirill Zhirkov , a political scientist at the University of Virginia, suggested in an email that one of the factors driving Latinos from the Democratic Party could be Hispanic prejudice against African Americans.

The image of the Democrats as a Black political party, what Zhirkov called “the ‘Democrats-Black’ schema” has the same effect “among Latinos and Asians,” Zhirkov wrote. “It is possible that as Latinos and Asians assimilate in the United States, some of them also (at least partially) acquire anti-Black prejudice as one of the organizing principles of anti-progressive politics.”

In support of his claim, Zhirkov cited his own 2022 paper, coauthored with Nicholas Valentino , a political scientist at the University of Michigan, “ The Origins and Consequences of Racialized Schemas about U.S. Parties ,” and also cited a 2016 paper, “ The Political Consequences of Latino Prejudice against Blacks ” by Yanna Krupnikov , a professor of communication at the University of Michigan, and Spencer Piston , a political scientist at Boston University.

The conflict between competing analyses of recent voting and polling trends won’t be resolved until the votes are counted after Election Day, Nov. 5.

In the meantime, what can be made of the data currently available?

There is not yet adequate evidence to proclaim a racial or minority voting realignment. There may be significant and consequential defections from the Democratic Party among Black, Hispanic and Asian Americans, but it is very unlikely that any of these constituencies will cast a majority or anything close to it for Donald Trump.

It is also possible that the Biden campaign could make up for the losses it does incur among minority voters with improved margins among white liberals and moderates angered by the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision ending women’s constitutional right to abortion and by the litany of stories describing the inability of women in red states to get medically necessary abortions.

Even so, Biden has his work cut out for him in the coming months. Voting data and polling data are in conflict, which confounds analysis — tiny shifts among white voters can still have an outsized impact. Biden knows he has to raise both the level of his support and the level of turnout among America’s minority voters if Democrats are going to have a decent chance of beating Trump.
