How to Use ChatGPT for Creative Writing

  • by Amalia Alonso Rodríguez @amalia.alonso

Discover how to maximize the advantages and overcome the limitations of artificial intelligence to improve your texts

Just a year ago, including “creativity” and “artificial intelligence” in the same sentence would have been largely implausible. However, the arrival of several free AI applications and, specifically, the free ChatGPT system in December 2022 has paved the way for a revolution. Is creativity something uniquely intrinsic to humans? Now, the answer may be, "It depends."

Whether or not ChatGPT will take the place of writers, copywriters, and content creators is still up for debate, but we can be certain that it's a useful tool for facilitating the work of these professionals. Thus, analyzing and understanding its features can help enhance productivity.

The arrival of ChatGPT in December 2022 has paved the way for a revolution.

To do just that, we'll review what ChatGPT is and how it works , examine its role in optimizing creative writing, and take a closer look at both its advantages and its most common pitfalls.

What is ChatGPT and how does it work

ChatGPT is a system developed by OpenAI that has been trained to generate text, similar to how a person does. Thanks to the extensive, wide-ranging data and information it has access to, it's capable of solving very specific tasks.

When a request is made, whether it's a concrete question or just a fragment of text, the chat-style platform responds based on everything it has learned. In other words, the system is capable of understanding the meaning of the words that make up the request and providing a coherent response.

ChatGPT is a system that has been trained to generate text in a similar way to people.

How to use ChatGPT for creative writing

Creative writing is a major aspect of content creation that includes the development of texts, both fictional and not, that go beyond the standard structures and norms that define styles such as journalistic, academic, or technical writing. In this case, the writer must think outside the box to surprise the reader.

It's difficult to imagine that an AI system could simulate the spontaneity that lies at the heart of creative writing; but what if we view it as an "idea generator?" In all processes, especially creative ones, there are times when one faces a figurative or literal blank page or even writer's block. It's in those precise moments that ChatGPT can help us find a starting point.

Advantages of writing content with ChatGPT

Let's take a look at some of the main advantages of writing with the help of ChatGPT:

1. Overcoming creative block

2. maintaining a consistent tone, 3. adapting a text to the reader, 4. imitating a particular style, 5. detecting keywords, 6. avoiding plagiarism.

ChatGPT can be useful to use as a starting point in creative writing.

Most common GPT Chat errors

Despite all the benefits and possibilities that ChatGPT offers, as a machine, it still has some limitations that we can often detect in its texts:

1. Word repetition

2. simple grammatical structures, 3. outdated information, 4. possible google penalties, what does chatgpt think about replacing copywriters with artificial intelligence systems.

Artificial intelligence has divided the art community into those who applaud the opportunities it offers and those who fear its potential. Following our analysis of this groundbreaking tool that has surpassed both Facebook and Spotify in number of registered users, what do you think? Before you answer, we asked ChatGPT for its opinion on how it may be appropriating the work of copywriters and creativity in general. The following is a representative summary of its responses:

“As a language model, my role is to automatically generate text in response to a given input. However, copywriters are professionals specialized in creating persuasive and compelling advertising content and are capable of adapting to different audiences, brands, and business objectives.

While I can generate copy quickly and efficiently, I can't completely replace a copywriter in terms of creativity, audience understanding, and ability to build a brand. Copywriters often have years of experience and specialized knowledge in their field, which allows them to create highly effective and strategic content.

While I can be helpful in generating content ideas and providing inspiration, I'm not a complete solution to replace a copywriter. Rather than replace copywriters, it may be more effective to use my technology to complement a copywriter's work and help streamline and accelerate their creative process.”

ChatGPT has achieved a milestone in registered users surpassing Facebook and Spotify.

Can ChatGPT be creative?

“Yes, as a language model, ChatGPT has the ability to generate text that can be considered creative in certain contexts. However, it is important to note that creativity itself is a complex and multifaceted concept and that the evaluation of what is considered creative depends on several factors, including the context, audience, and purpose of the text.

Generally speaking, ChatGPT can be creative to the extent that it can combine and generate new ideas, concepts, and words in an original and novel way. This can be particularly useful in generating ideas for marketing content, for example, where a fresh and original perspective is required to stand out and capture the audience's attention.

However, it is important to note that creativity also involves critical judgment, decision-making, and the ability to assess and adjust the quality of creative work. These abilities are typically attributes of humans, and while ChatGPT can offer a different and original perspective, it still can't make creative decisions on a human level.”

Understanding ChatGPT and Its Limitations

Gpt-4 architecture.

ChatGPT is built on the powerful GPT-4 architecture, which allows it to generate highly coherent and contextually relevant text based on user inputs. It's a massive language model trained on a diverse range of text data, which enables it to respond to a variety of prompts with human-like accuracy. However, it's essential to understand its limitations to create effective prompts and manage expectations.

Potential Biases

As a result of the data it's trained on, ChatGPT may sometimes exhibit biases present in the source material. These biases can manifest in the form of stereotypes, political inclinations, or controversial opinions. When using ChatGPT for creative writing, it's crucial to be aware of such biases and review the generated content for potential issues.

Limitations in Context and Understanding

While ChatGPT can produce impressive results, it may struggle with understanding the context or the nuances of certain prompts. As a result, it might provide responses that are irrelevant or off-topic. To overcome these limitations, it's essential to craft prompts that are clear and unambiguous.

Example Prompts:

Write a descriptive paragraph about a mysterious forest, focusing on the sights, sounds, and smells.

Create a dialogue between two characters who are meeting for the first time at a coffee shop.

Describe a futuristic cityscape from the perspective of a person visiting it for the first time.

Write a poem about the fleeting nature of time, using imagery from nature to illustrate your points.

Imagine a world where animals can speak, and write a conversation between a dog and its owner about their daily routine.

Create a short story about a detective solving a seemingly impossible case, with a surprising twist at the end.

Crafting Effective Creative Writing Prompts for ChatGPT

Set clear goals for your writing project.

Before diving into the world of ChatGPT, it's essential to have a clear idea of your writing goals. Are you looking for inspiration to write a novel, a poem, or a script? Knowing your objectives will help you create targeted prompts that generate the desired output.

Be Specific with Your Instructions

ChatGPT relies on your prompts to understand your expectations. Providing specific instructions will guide the AI to produce content that aligns with your vision. The more explicit your prompt, the more accurate and relevant the generated output will be.

Write a 500-word short story set in a dystopian future where technology controls every aspect of life.

Compose a sonnet about unrequited love, using a Shakespearean rhyme scheme.

Write a scene of a play where two characters argue about a moral dilemma, with one taking a utilitarian stance and the other a deontological one.

Experiment with Different Prompt Styles

There are various types of prompts you can use to inspire creative writing with ChatGPT. Experimenting with different styles will help you discover what works best for your writing goals.

Open-Ended Prompts

Open-ended prompts allow ChatGPT to generate content that is broad and creative. These prompts provide general guidance, giving the AI more freedom to explore diverse ideas.

Guided Prompts

Guided prompts are more specific and direct the AI towards a particular outcome. These prompts are ideal when you have a clear vision for your creative writing project.

Write a 300-word horror story set in an abandoned asylum, with a vengeful ghost as the main antagonist.

Describe a medieval feast from the perspective of a court jester who is secretly plotting the king's downfall.

Compose a haiku about the serenity of a snow-covered landscape.

Image-Based Prompts

Image-based prompts use visual cues to inspire creative writing. You can describe a scene or an image in your prompt and ask ChatGPT to generate content based on that description.

Write a short story inspired by a scene depicting a lonely lighthouse on a stormy night.

Describe a bustling marketplace in a fantasy world, with various mythical creatures selling their wares.

Compose a poem based on an image of a serene lake surrounded by autumn foliage.

Adjusting the Level of Detail in Your Prompts

The level of detail in your prompts can significantly impact the generated content. You can experiment with adding or removing details to achieve the desired level of creativity and specificity in your output.

Write a sci-fi story about a group of astronauts stranded on an alien planet. (less detailed)

Collaborative Writing with ChatGPT

You can use ChatGPT as a writing partner by taking turns in crafting a story or a poem. This approach allows you to combine your creativity with the AI's capabilities, resulting in unique and engaging content.

Start a short story with an intriguing opening line, and ask ChatGPT to continue the story.

Write alternating stanzas of a poem, using ChatGPT to compose every other stanza.

Blending Multiple Prompts

Combining two or more unrelated prompts can lead to highly creative and unexpected results. By merging different ideas, you can create unique scenarios and storylines.

Write a short story that combines a time-traveling scientist and a mythical creature in a modern-day city.

Compose a poem that blends themes of nature and technology, exploring the harmony and discord between the two.

Implementing Constraints for Unique Output

Adding constraints to your prompts can encourage creativity by limiting the options available to ChatGPT. This technique can lead to innovative ideas and unexpected twists in your writing.

Write a short story without using any adverbs.

Compose a poem where each line begins with a different letter of the alphabet.

Write a dialogue between two characters using only questions.

Best Practices for Using ChatGPT in Creative Writing

How To Use ChatGPT for Creative Writing in Three Easy Steps

ChatGPT is currently in beta mode and is a free service upon sign-up. Due to high usage, the site sometimes reaches capacity, and you have to wait a few minutes before you can get on, but this is rarely much of an issue.

After sign-up, the ChatGPT website gives you an overview of some ways you can use the bot and lets you get started right away.

The most effective way to use ChatGPT is to begin feeding it information relevant to your selected topic and string texts together so it can generate content best suited to your needs.

Here’s an example of text we put into the bot:

“Write a short character description for a noble knight who serves his kingdom.”

This was the bot’s response:

Sir Reginald is a noble knight who serves his kingdom with honor and distinction. He is a brave warrior, skilled in both swordplay and horseback riding. Despite his great power and status, Sir Reginald is humble and kind, always putting the needs of his kingdom and its people first. He is a true defender of the realm.

Although this isn’t what you would call an end-all-be-all description for a character, it’s a solid starting point based on proven archetypes. You can adjust it manually, or you can continue stringing text together in the bot to have it elaborate further on the character.

In the same chat, we followed up with this question:

“Adding on to his character description, does Sir Reginald have a family?”

To which the bot responded:

Yes, Sir Reginald has a family. His wife, Lady Isabella, is a beautiful and kind lady. They have two children, a son and a daughter, who he loves dearly. Despite his duties as a knight often taking him away from home, he makes sure to spend quality time with them whenever he can.

Sir Reginald now seems to have more depth as a character than before. You can continue your creative writing with ChatGPT by building upon his character or having the AI generate some short stories involving “Sir Reginald.”

Using ChatGPT as a Story Aid

If you’re working on a short story and are having trouble progressing, you can provide ChatGPT with the first few paragraphs and ask it to generate a continuation based on the patterns and structures it has learned from its training data.

However, the bot can’t perfectly capture style or tone and is often generic. You shouldn’t rely on the bot for integral aspects of creative content, but it can help write filler and segments.

Using ChatGPT for Poetry

Another way to use ChatGPT for creative writing is to create poetry . By providing the model with a theme or a prompt, ChatGPT can generate a poem. This can be a good starting point for poets who need inspiration or want to explore different writing styles.

Tips for Using ChatGPT for Creative Writing

Creative writing with ChatGPT can be an excellent way to get unstuck. It can help writers to get started on a project, explore new writing styles, and generate ideas. It’s also free, which makes it an accessible resource to everyone with a computer.

Still, it’s essential to use it cautiously and be aware of its limitations. While you can certainly maximize your potential as a writer, you must remember that the bot can’t completely replace a human in creative writing. Check out an online creative writing course and grow your writing skills today!

How to get chatgpt to write better fiction.

With ChatGPT, it's all about the prompts.

Quick Links

Chatgpt's fiction writing capabilities and limitations, understanding fiction writing, tips for improving chatgpt's fiction writing, techniques for enhancing chatgpt's writing style, using machine learning to fine-tune chatgpt's writing.

ChatGPT has increasingly been entering creative fields once thought impossible for an AI to succeed in---such as fiction writing. However, ChatGPT needs some help. It needs solid prompts, otherwise, its writing can be very generic.

As an AI, ChatGPT does not have any innate creativity. It cannot come up with original concepts on its own or use its imagination. It needs to be given specific requests (called prompts) in order to generate bodies of text.

Keep in mind that ChatGPT remembers what you said in earlier parts of a given conversation and that you can correct it with feedback. As for its limitations, the most important one for getting it to write fiction is that ChatGPT needs to use existing world information and prompts; it can't come up with anything original by itself.

We'll teach you how to get ChatGPT to generate more interesting content, how to enhance its style, and how machine learning works so that you can further experiment on your own.

However, first, we need to break down the most important elements of fiction writing and how ChatGPT uses these elements.

There's a lot that goes into creating an interesting and engaging story. This can make it quite tricky to generate useful prompts. That's why it's crucial to phrase your prompts properly to give ChatGPT the best possible chances of generating worthwhile text.

The sequence of events that make up the story. This includes the event that begins your tale, the factors that push the story and characters along a certain path, the climactic moment, the aftereffects of that climactic moment, and some sort of resolution.

ChatGPT has been trained through many texts---including fiction ones. When asked to generate fiction, it tries to replicate patterns found in existing works of fiction. It will always use the following to generate a plot:

  • Rising action
  • Falling action

Getting ChatGPT to write an outline for a fantasy western set on Mars.

ChatGPT sees these components as crucial parts of the plot equation. It never deviates from this formula unless specifically directed otherwise. Therefore, the quality and originality of the plot will depend on the quality and originality of the data it has been trained on and the input prompts given to it.

The beings involved in the story. These can be people, animals, or other kinds of beings. Each should have their own distinct personality, motivations, and conflicts. By having a dynamic cast of characters, a story becomes more entertaining and relatable.

To create characters, ChatGPT can analyze the prompts given to it and produce the main characters based on three main factors:

  • Character descriptions
  • Relationships

Once more, this AI model follows a specific formula for creating characters (albeit a simpler one than when generating a plotline). Do you see a pattern yet?

The time and place where the story occurs. It includes the physical environment, culture, historical context, and many more worldly components. The religions, myths, and legends of a setting's sapient races all fall into this category as well.

When coming up with a setting, ChatGPT uses the following components:

  • Time period

ChatGPT comes up with a setting called Erebus in Greece.

Due to a setting being much more physically defined than other essential elements of fiction writing, the AI model has an easier time coming up with tangible parts of the described world, such as noteworthy locations and the appearance of the landscape.

Perspective

The point of view from which the story is told. It can be first-person, second-person, or third-person. It's important not to swap between any of the aforementioned three unless you have a great reason. If you do, you may end up with confusing text that leaves the reader lost and frustrated.

ChatGPT tries to pick the perspective that it thinks is best for the prompt. However, this can backfire if you leave this element unspecified, which can result in ChatGPT mixing up perspective types. This ends in a narrative that's all over the place and confusing.

The reason why the AI model has such a hard time with perspective is that it cannot quantify perspective like it can with other fiction elements. It has no formula for generating a point of view.

The central messages or ideas of the story. These can be straightforward and easy to grasp, or obscure and shrouded in mystery. Depending on your goals, either explicit or implicit themes can make your story more interesting---sometimes even both in a unique mix.

ChatGPT will be broad with themes, as it judges the importance of potential ones based on the prompt given. This ties into the components it analyzes from existing works. For example, if you get it to generate a story about aliens, it will use humanity's innate fear of the unknown as a key theme.

Due to themes being story-specific, the AI model doesn't have a true formula for generating them; it picks themes synonymous with those found in known works of fiction. It basically just copies the themes from similar stories unless you specify otherwise.

The spoken or written words between characters. This is the avenue through which characters reveal their personalities, relationships, and conflicts. Not all stories necessarily need dialogue, but it's a great way to naturally incorporate important aspects of the characters. Furthermore, dialogue breaks up the prose in ways that result in better readability for most audiences.

ChatGPT uses traits of the characters in a story to generate dialogue between them. It also tries to keep a story's context in mind. Here are the factors it will consider when creating dialogue text:

  • Internal character traits (personalities, thoughts, and emotions)
  • External character traits (speech patterns, dialects, and colloquialisms)
  • Scene context

ChatGPT writes a dialogue scene for characters from the Wreck-It Ralph universe.

The AI model will try to advance the plot through dialogue as well as reveal character motivations. Keep in mind that it can be a bit on the nose and clumsy with such story components, so you'll need to insert some subtlety via your prompt.

The author's writing style. This includes word choice, tone, and the use of literary devices. It contributes to the overall mood and atmosphere of the story. An author's life, upbringing, moral values, and more contribute to their writing style. However, don't expect ChatGPT to perfectly emulate a famous writer.

When coming up with a style through which to tell a story , ChatGPT will use the following components:

  • Mood (how readers should feel about the subject of a scene)
  • Tone (how the characters act and feel in regard to the subject of a scene)
  • Story genre

ChatGPT writing a generic story due to a too-simple prompt.

Since an AI model can only work with what it's given via details in your prompts, you need to refine them by making sure you speak ChatGPT's language.

Providing Context and Backstory

You can provide context in your prompts by including details about the setting; what the characters are seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching. Mentioning what your characters should be physically experiencing lets ChatGPT learn what the world is like without you literally mentioning everything in a location.

Incorporating flashbacks can be a solid way to reveal a backstory in a direct manner. When you tell ChatGPT to do this in a prompt, it will provide more depth and understanding of your story.

There are sometimes important story components that you can't bring up directly. As such, using a bit of exposition can close unnecessary gaps in your world-building. However, you want to use exposition sparingly, as too much can result in boring text. Give ChatGPT a parameter for how much exposition to include so that it doesn't get carried away. For example, include "Use two sentences of exposition" in your prompt for a scene.

Building a Solid Plot Structure

Start by giving clear goals for a plot's concept. Mention the genre, the main characters, and the central conflict or problem so that ChatGPT understands what you're trying to achieve with your story.

Outline the major plot points in the story. Specifically, include the inciting incident, the rising action, the climax, and the resolution in your prompt. This is pretty much the exact formula that ChatGPT is looking for in order to answer your plot equation.

Provide clear character goals and motivations. ChatGPT needs to understand the goals and motivations of the characters in the story to build a solid plot structure. Otherwise, the story may come out feeling like it lacks a direction or that the plot isn't progressing as it should.

Consider breaking down your story into three, four, or five acts. Segmenting the story and then giving it to ChatGPT via a prompt can keep things organized and balanced in terms of pacing and structure. You don't want a story with an elongated beginning and short end---or similar imbalances.

ChatGPT creating a three-act structure for a goofy story.

Developing Compelling Characters

Give ChatGPT detailed descriptions of your characters, including their physical appearance, personality traits, and personal backstory. This will help the AI model generate more nuanced and complex characters.

While mentioning a character's goals and motivations is crucial for the plot, it's equally important for developing the character themself. Guiding ChatGPT's output in this regard will help your characters become more relatable.

You can also use individual character prompts to ask ChatGPT to generate a character's backstory, a monologue from a character's perspective, or a conversation between two characters.

Crafting Engaging Dialogue

Each character should have a distinct voice, with unique speech patterns, vocabulary, and tone. Provide ChatGPT with clear character descriptions and sample dialogue to guide its output.

Avoid using overly formal language. Instead, focus on creating dialogue that sounds like something real people would say. Try to emulate a conversation you've had recently to practice coming up with good dialogue prompts.

Dialogue should be grounded in the context of the story. Provide ChatGPT with clear descriptions of the setting, the characters' relationships, and the current situation to help it generate dialogue that is appropriate for the scene.

ChatGPT coming up with an overly formal response due to a prompt that's too broad.

Furthermore, dialogue is often more engaging when there is an underlying subtext. This can be achieved through the use of indirect language, sarcasm, or implication. People also lie a lot, so throw some of those into your character conversations as well for added realism.

In addition to getting ChatGPT to generate more interesting text, you'll want to improve the style of such text. This is different than coming up with an initial style for ChatGPT with which to write fiction.

We briefly went over how to do so, but now we're going to go into more specific details on how to accomplish style improvements.

Using Descriptive Language

Give ChatGPT detailed descriptions of the setting, characters, and objects in the story. Mention physical aspects of the landscape, the appearance of characters, and why particular objects are important.

Employing Figurative Language

Figurative language refers to metaphors, similes, and allusions. Such writing techniques are more subtle ways of getting across the importance of subjects, themes, and more.

ChatGPT writing a scene full of metaphors, similes, and allusions.

Despite not being quantitative in nature, ChatGPT has a solid understanding of these techniques due to there being plenty of examples of them in existing works. Remember that this AI model learns from what humans tell it as well as what it has learned from available information about fiction writing.

Incorporating Sensory Details

Encourage ChatGPT to include sensory details, such as sights, smells, sounds, and textures, to help bring the scene to life. People are sensory beings; we perceive the world around us through what our senses tell us about our surroundings. As such, readers will become more immersed in the story if you tell ChatGPT to include such details.

Varying Sentence Structure

You want to have varying sentence structures for multiple reasons. Firstly, it makes the text more interesting to readers. On top of that, the length of a sentence can help emphasize points or explain concepts in greater depth.

Shorter sentences---including sentence fragments---can make a simple point resonate in a reader's mind. This can be done through both dialogue and prose. Conversely, longer and more complex sentences let you explore a point in better detail and allow readers to gain a better understanding of what you're trying to say.

Machine learning is a type of artificial intelligence that enables computers to learn from data and determine things without being directly programmed to do so. Put simply, machine learning involves the use of algorithms to analyze large datasets, identify patterns and relationships, and make predictions or decisions based on that analysis.

How Machine Learning Works

The first step in machine learning is to collect and organize data. In regards to fiction writing, ChatGPT looks at the vast volumes of existing written works---as we've mentioned a few times before in this article.

We're stressing this point because you need to always remember that ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence that cannot do things on its own. Keeping this in mind will prevent you from getting frustrated when ChatGPT doesn't give you the results you want.

A user getting angry and giving ChatGPT negative feedback.

Once the data is collected, it must be cleaned and preprocessed to ensure that it is in a usable format. This might involve removing irrelevant or duplicate data points, standardizing the data, and more.

After the data is preprocessed, it can be used to train a machine learning algorithm. During the training phase, the algorithm analyzes the data to identify patterns and relationships. This is done by adjusting the algorithm's parameters until it can accurately predict or classify data based on the patterns it has identified. With that said, due to the amount of misinformation out there, ChatGPT is prone to sometimes generating inaccurate information---so always be wary and do your research.

Following the training process, the AI model must be tested to ensure that it can accurately predict or classify new data. This is typically done by using original data to evaluate the algorithm's performance.

Lastly, once the algorithm has been trained and tested, it can be deployed to make predictions or decisions based on new data. When getting ChatGPT to write fiction, this last part comes about when you give it prompts.

How You Can Use Machine Learning to Enhance ChatGPT's Fiction Writing

As the AI model receives feedback and is exposed to more examples of good writing, it can learn to refine its output and generate more engaging and compelling stories.

Make sure you regularly give ChatGPT feedback so that it has a chance to learn what you want from it. If you don't, you're unlikely to get the results you want. ChatGPT can only improve if you help it. It cannot make improvements on its own.

Examples of Machine Learning Techniques for Improving ChatGPT's Fiction Writing

You can fine-tune ChatGPT's writing techniques by training it on a specific task. Get it to generate stories from a specific genre, like high fantasy or cosmic horror, and then give it feedback about what you liked and didn't like regarding what it generated.

For example, if the high fantasy text it created didn't have enough magic, give the AI model feedback like "include more magic spells" or "put more wizards and witches in the story."

This can be done with all aspects of a story; not just the genre-related points. Use this method for the choice of words, theme implementation, character personalities, and more.

Here's a summary of the main points we explored in this article:

  • Remember ChatGPT's capabilities and limitations
  • Understand how ChatGPT uses fiction writing elements to generate text (plot, setting, etc.)
  • Improve ChatGPT's content by giving it solid prompts to work off
  • Enhance ChatGPT's writing style by giving it specific feedback
  • Use machine learning techniques to help you get what you want out of the AI model

The old adage "practice makes perfect" is as true here as it always is. You'll need to experiment a lot to get a suitable product from ChatGPT. It's always learning and improving---therefore you should as well---not just by coming up with good prompts, but also by deepening your understanding of fiction writing. Keep reading stories from other authors and practice writing without ChatGPT.

The most important takeaway here is that AI models are a tool to help you improve; you shouldn't expect them to do all the work for you.

How to Use ChatGPT for Creative Writing: 6 Ways

ChatGPT can help with creative writing if you approach the tool correctly.

ChatGPT has far-reaching uses for many writing tasks, including informative and academic essays, copywriting, social media posts, and much more. It’s also an excellent resource for playing with poetry, short stories, and even personal essays and memoirs. Here’s how to use ChatGPT as a tool to help energize your creative writing and even overcome writer's block.

1. Work With Poetic Forms

When you're studying poetry, it's easy to get a bit overwhelmed by the variety of different poetic forms. Because ChatGPT can generate a poem in just about any form, however, it’s a fun way to play around with common poetic types, and you can endlessly tweak the prompts to create different responses.

Prompt ChatGPT to “write a villanelle about springtime” or “write a sonnet about going to the movies with your best friend.” The chatbot instantly generates a response.

3. Check Poetic Meter

The app can scan poems for meter and rhythm as well, which is handy if you’re trying to work with a specific metrical form in your own poetry. It can differentiate trochaic tetrameter from iambic pentameter in an instant.

Simply prompt ChatGPT to scan the poem, then paste in your verses.

4. Generate Story Ideas

ChatGPT really shines as an idea generator for just about any genre of story. Prompt it to “give me 20 story ideas for a sci-fi tale about space travel and adventure.”

ChatGPT sci fi story ideas

You'll get a huge list of ideas to spark your creativity.

Get as specific as you like with the prompts. For instance, ask ChatGPT to “provide 15 ideas for mystery short stories that feature a train, a key, and wintry weather” and watch the ideas flow.

You can also get the app to use specific authors for inspiration, too. For instance, prompt it to “provide 15 story ideas in the style of Hemingway about choosing a new pet” or “provide 12 ideas for love stories in the style of Philip K. Dick.”

ChatGPT story ideas similar to Hemingway

The app keys in on each author's familiar themes and styles to construct these inspiring (and sometimes a bit bizarre) story ideas.

5. Play With Audience and Tone

Because you can assign roles to ChatGPT, as well as instruct it to address particular audiences, it’s easy to adjust the tone of your pieces for different readers. This is a fantastic way to learn more about tailoring stories for various audiences.

For instance, a prompt to “tell a story about bears as though you are a kindergarten teacher addressing a classroom” produces a cute, kid-friendly tale about friendship.

ChatGPT kid friendly bear story

Meanwhile, a prompt to “tell a literary story about bears for a sophisticated adult audience” produces a much more rugged story.

ChatGPT literary bear story

In addition, you can insert your own work into the app and tailor it for different audiences. Use prompts like “adjust this story for an audience of primarily female readers in their 20s” or “tailor this story to fans of mystery fiction.”

It’s fun to see what changes appear, and it’s an instructive practice in customizing your work for different audiences.

6. Overcome Writer’s Block

Use ChatGPT to find the right word, rephrase sentences, and generally overcome some of the common hurdles associated with writer’s block. If you get stuck on one sentence, for instance, then you can prompt the chatbot to rephrase it a number of different ways.

In this instance, the chatbot offers some ideas for mystery story plot twists. You can also get more specific and ask it for "unexpected plot twists" or similar prompts.

In many ways, ChatGPT can help you overcome the biggest hurdle for plenty of writers: the blank page (or screen).

Caveats About Using ChatGPT for Creative Writing

Although ChatGPT is an amazing tool with impressive storytelling abilities, it's important to use the chatbot responsibly.

For starters, don’t submit an AI story as your original work. Tools like GPTZero can detect AI-generated language , and claiming AI content as your own can potentially count as plagiarism (AKA a big taboo for any writer).

In addition, ownership and copyright of AI-generated text and other content can get murky. If you're creating stories or poems for publication, then your best bet is to use ChatGPT for idea generation and perhaps some light editing.

Also, ChatGPT isn’t infallible, so remember that it may provide incorrect information. Double-check with reputable sources for nonfiction content in particular.

Lastly, remember that your own memories and experiences can’t be generated by AI, so tap into them for your creative writing. ChatGPT is an excellent tool, but it can’t tell your stories for you.

Boost Your Creative Writing Skills With ChatGPT

Whether you're writing fiction, poetry, journal entries, blog posts, or other nonfiction content, ChatGPT offers a wide array of guidance for writers. Dig deeper into poetic forms, find the word that's on the tip of your tongue, and generate endless story ideas with help from the popular AI chatbot. With a little help from ChatGPT, you may never have to stare down a blank screen again.

ChatGPT has taken the world by storm in a very short period of time, as users continue to test the boundaries of what the AI chatbot can accomplish. And so far, that's a lot.

Some of it is negative, of course: for instance Samsung workers accidentally leaking top-secret data while using ChatGPT , or the AI chatbot being used for malware scams . Plagiarism is also rampant, with the use of ChatGPT for writing college essays a potential problem.

However, while ChatGPT can and has been used for wrongdoing, to the point where the Future of Life Institution released an open letter calling for the temporary halt of OpenAI system work , AI isn’t all bad. Far from it.

For a start, anyone who writes something may well have used AI to enhance their work already. The most common applications, of course, are the grammar and spelling correction tools found in everything from email applications to word processors. But there are a growing number of other examples of how AI can be used for writing. So, how do you bridge the gap between using AI as the tool it is, without crossing over into plagiarism city?

In fact, there are many ways ChatGPT can be used to enhance your skills, particularly when it comes to researching, developing, and organizing ideas and information for creative writing. By using AI as it was intended - as a tool, not a crutch - it can enrich your writing in ways that help to better your craft, without resorting to it doing everything for you.

Below, we've listed some of our favorite ways to use ChatGPT and similar AI chatbots for writing.

A key part of any writing task is the research, and thanks to the internet that chore has never been easier to accomplish. However, while finding the general sources you need is far less time-consuming than it once was, actually parsing all that information is still the same slog it’s always been. But this is where ChatGPT comes in. You can use the AI bot to do the manual labor for you and then reap the benefits of having tons of data to use for your work.

The steps are slightly different, depending on whether you want an article or book summarized .

For the article, there are two ways to have ChatGPT summarize it. The first requires you to type in the words ‘TLDR:’ and then paste the article’s URL next to it. The second method is a bit more tedious, but increases the accuracy of your summary. For that, you’ll need to copy and paste the article itself into the prompt .

Summarizing a book is much easier, as long as it was published before 2021. Simply type into the prompt ‘summarize [book title]’ and it should do the rest for you.

This should go without saying, but for any articles or books, make sure you read the source material first before using any information presented to you. While ChatGPT is an incredibly useful tool that can create resources meant for future reference, it’s not a perfect one and is subject to accidentally inserting misinformation into anything it gives you.

One of the most extensive and important tasks when crafting your creative work is to properly flesh out the world your characters occupy. Even for works set in a regular modern setting, it can take plenty of effort to research the various cultures, landmarks, languages, and neighborhoods your characters live in and encounter.

Now, imagine stories that require their own unique setting, and how much more work that entails in terms of creating those same details from scratch. While it’s vital that the main ideas come from you, using ChatGPT can be a great way to streamline the process, especially with more tedious details.

For instance, if you need certain fictional words without wanting to create an entirely fictional language, you can prompt ChatGPT with the following : “Create a language including an alphabet, phonetics, grammar, and the most common 100 words. Base it on [insert real-life languages here]” and it will give you some good starting points. However, it’s imperative that you take these words and look them up, to ensure you aren’t appropriating sensitive terms or using offensive real-life words.

Another example is useful for those who write scenarios for games, especially tabletop games such as Dungeons & Dragons or Call of Cthulhu . Dungeon Masters (who run the games) may often need to create documents or other fake materials for their world, but doing so takes a lot of time and effort. Now, they can prompt ChatGPT to quickly create filler text that sounds interesting or authentic but is inherently useless; it's essentially like ' Lorem Ipsum ' text, but more immersive.

When writing a story, many people will use an outline to ensure they stay on track and that the narrative flows well. But actually sitting down and organizing everything in your head in order to create a cohesive reference is a lot more daunting than it seems. It’s one of those steps that can be crucial to a well-structured work of fiction, but it can also become a hurdle. This is another area where ChatGPT can come in handy.

The key to writing an effective outline is remembering that you don’t need to have all the answers first. It’s there to structure your content, by helping you hit critical points and not miss important details in the process. While there are AI generators with a more specific focus on this topic, ChatGPT will do a good job at taking a general prompt and returning points for you to keep in mind while you research and write around that topic.

For instance, I prompted ChatGPT with “I want to write a story about a black woman in 16th century England” and it gave me a well-thought-out series of steps to help me create a story that would reflect my topic. An outline such as this would be particularly useful for those needing a resource they can quickly turn to for inspiration when writing. After that, you can begin to develop more complex ideas and have the AI organize those specifics into much easier-to-follow steps.

What makes any great story are the characters that inhabit it. Writing strong, fleshed-out characters is the cornerstone of any creative work and, naturally, the process of creating such a character can be difficult. Their background, manner of speech, goals, dreams, look, and more must be carefully considered and planned out. And this is another aspect of writing that ChatGPT can aid with, if you know how to go about it.

A basic way to use ChatGPT in this regard is to have it generate possible characters that could populate whatever setting you’re writing for. For example, I prompted it with “Provide some ideas for characters set in 1920s Harlem” and it gave me a full list of people with varied and distinctive backstories to use as a jumping-off point. Each character is described with a single sentence, enough to help start the process of creating them, but still leaving the crux of developing them up to me.

One of the most interesting features of ChatGPT is that you can flat-out roleplay with a character, whether they're a historical figure or one that you created but need help fleshing out. Take that same character you just created and have a conversation with them by asking them questions on their history, family life, profession, etc. Based on my previous results, I prompted with “Pretend to be a jazz musician from 1920s Harlem. Let's have a conversation.” I then asked questions from there, basing them on prior answers. Of course, from there you need to parse through these responses to filter out unnecessary or inaccurate details, while fleshing out what works for your story, but it does provide you with a useful stepping stone.

If you’re having issues getting the results you want, the problem could be with how you’re phrasing those questions or prompts in the first place. We've got a full guide to how to improve your ChatGPT prompts and responses , but here are a few of the best options:

  • Specify the direction you want the AI to go, by adding in relevant details
  • Prompt from a specific role to guide the responses in the proper direction
  • Make sure your prompts are free of typos and grammatical errors
  • Keep your tone conversational, as that’s how ChatGPT was built
  • Learn from yours and its mistakes to make it a better tool
  • Break up your conversations into 500 words or less, as that’s when the AI begins to break down and go off topic
  • If you need something clarified, ask the AI based on its last response
  • Ask it to cite sources and then check those sources
  • Sometimes it’s best to start fresh with a brand new conversation

Of course, many of the above suggestions apply not just to ChatGPT but also to the other chatbots springing up in its wake. Check out our list of the best ChatGPT alternatives and see which one works best for you.

Ethical considerations surrounding the use of AI in creative writing

The "Ethical considerations surrounding the use of AI in creative writing" section of the article will explore the potential ethical dilemmas that may arise from the use of AI in creative writing.

One ethical consideration is the question of authorship. If a piece of writing is generated or heavily edited by an AI, who should be credited as the author? It could be argued that the AI is a tool and the human writer is the true author, however, it could also be argued that the AI played a significant role in the creation of the piece and therefore should be credited as a co-author.

Another ethical consideration is the potential for AI to replace human writers. If AI can generate high-quality writing at a faster rate and at a lower cost than human writers, it could lead to job losses and economic disruption in the writing industry. Additionally, if AI-generated writing becomes prevalent, it could lead to a decrease in the number of unique voices and perspectives in literature.

There is also a concern that AI-generated writing may lack the emotional depth and nuance that human writing can possess. Some argue that the use of AI in creative writing could lead to a homogenization of literature and a loss of the unique perspectives and emotions that make human writing so powerful.

Finally, there is a concern that AI generated writing could perpetuate biases and stereotypes present in the data it was trained on. This could result in literature that reinforces harmful societal prejudices and stereotypes.

In summary, the "Ethical considerations surrounding the use of AI in creative writing" section will explore the potential ethical dilemmas that may arise from the use of AI in creative writing. It will discuss the question of authorship, the potential for AI to replace human writers, the potential loss of emotional depth and nuance, and the potential for AI-generated writing to perpetuate biases and stereotypes. It will also touch on the importance of considering these ethical considerations as we move forward with the development and implementation of AI in the field of creative writing.

The impact of ChatGPT on the publishing industry

The "The impact of ChatGPT on the publishing industry" section of the article will explore the ways in which ChatGPT could potentially impact the publishing industry.

One way ChatGPT could impact the publishing industry is by improving the speed and efficiency of the editing and proofreading process. By using ChatGPT to analyze a manuscript, publishers and editors could quickly identify areas that need improvement and make necessary changes more quickly than they would be able to do manually. This could lead to faster turnaround times and the ability to publish more books in a shorter period of time.

Another way ChatGPT could impact the publishing industry is by improving the number of books that are published. ChatGPT could be used to generate new content quickly and inexpensively, which could lead to more books being published overall. This could be especially beneficial for niche or experimental works that might not otherwise be financially viable for publishers to produce.

ChatGPT also has the potential to change the way books are marketed and sold. By analyzing data on reader preferences, ChatGPT could assist publishers in identifying trends and making decisions about which books to publish, how to market them, and where to sell them.

On the other hand, ChatGPT could also lead to a decrease in the value of human-written literature, as the increased speed and efficiency of AI-generated content could lead to a surplus of books on the market. This could drive down prices and make it more difficult for human writers to make a living.

In summary, the "The impact of ChatGPT on the publishing industry" section of the article will explore the potential ways ChatGPT could impact the publishing industry. It will discuss how ChatGPT could increase the speed and efficiency of the editing and proofreading process, increase the number of books published, and change the way books are marketed and sold. It also highlights the potential downside of ChatGPT on the publishing industry such as decrease in the value of human-written literature and making it difficult for human writers to make a living.

The role of human authors in an age of AI-assisted writing

The "The role of human authors in an age of AI-assisted writing" section of the article will explore how the use of AI like ChatGPT in creative writing might affect the role of human authors.

One way in which the use of AI in creative writing could affect the role of human authors is by making the writing process more efficient. With ChatGPT, human authors could spend less time on tasks such as editing, proofreading, and research, and more time on the creative aspects of writing. This could free up more time for human authors to focus on the creative process of generating new ideas and developing characters, settings, and plots.

On the other hand, the use of AI in creative writing could also lead to a decrease in the demand for human authors. If AI can generate high-quality writing at a faster rate and at a lower cost than human writers, it could lead to job losses and economic disruption in the writing industry.

Despite this, human authors will always be needed in the creative writing process. AI can assist with tasks such as editing, proofreading, and research, but it cannot replace the unique voice, perspective, and emotional depth that human authors bring to their work. Human authors possess the ability to express their own ideas and emotions, and to create stories that reflect the human experience in a way that AI-generated writing cannot match.

Moreover, the use of AI in creative writing also has the potential to broaden the scope of writing by giving access to those who may have difficulties in writing (such as those with disabilities) and can also help to improve the craft of authors by providing them with a wide range of options.

In summary, the "The role of human authors in an age of AI-assisted writing" section of the article will explore how the use of AI like ChatGPT in creative writing might affect the role of human authors. It will discuss how the use of AI in creative writing could make the writing process more efficient, but also how it may decrease the demand for human authors. It will also emphasize that AI can assist with tasks such as editing, proofreading, and research, but it cannot replace the unique voice, perspective, and emotional depth that human authors bring to their work, and that AI can help to broaden the scope of writing and improve the craft of authors.

The potential for ChatGPT to generate new forms of literature

The "The potential for ChatGPT to generate new forms of literature" section of the article will explore how ChatGPT could be used to generate new forms of literature that are not currently possible with traditional writing methods.

One potential application of ChatGPT in literature is its ability to generate interactive fiction. With ChatGPT, authors could create stories where the reader is able to make choices that affect the outcome of the story. This could lead to a new form of literature that is more immersive and engaging for readers.

Another potential application is the use of ChatGPT in generating poetry. ChatGPT has been trained on a large corpus of text and has the ability to understand and generate poetry in a way that is similar to how a human would. This could lead to the creation of new forms of poetry that are not currently possible with traditional writing methods.

ChatGPT can also be used to generate a new form of literature which is called "generated literature" which is a literature that is generated entirely by AI. The generated literature can be in the form of novels, short stories, poetry, and even plays.

Additionally, ChatGPT can also be used to generate multiple versions of the same story, which can lead to the creation of a new form of literature. For example, an author could use ChatGPT to generate multiple versions of a story, each with a different ending. This could lead to a new form of literature that is more open-ended and allows for more interpretation by the reader.

In summary, the "The potential for ChatGPT to generate new forms of literature" section of the article will explore how ChatGPT could be used to generate new forms of literature that are not currently possible with traditional writing methods. It will discuss how ChatGPT could be used to generate interactive fiction, new forms of poetry, generated literature and multiple versions of the same story, which can lead to the creation of a new form of literature that is more immersive, engaging and open-ended, and allows for more interpretation by the reader.

The limitations of ChatGPT in creative writing

The "The limitations of ChatGPT in creative writing" section of the article will explore some of the limitations of using ChatGPT in the creative writing process.

One limitation of ChatGPT is that it can sometimes generate nonsensical or irrelevant text. This is because ChatGPT is trained on a large corpus of text and is not always able to understand the context of a specific writing prompt. This can lead to text that is not coherent or relevant to the writing prompt, which can be frustrating for writers who are trying to use ChatGPT as a tool to assist in their writing.

Another limitation is that ChatGPT is not able to generate original ideas or concepts. It can only generate text based on the information it has been trained on. This means that ChatGPT is not able to come up with truly unique or original ideas. It can only generate text based on the information it has been trained on.

Another limitation is that ChatGPT lacks the human-like emotions, creativity and imagination. ChatGPT can generate text that is coherent and grammatically correct, but it may lack the emotional depth or creative flair that a human author could bring to a piece of writing.

Additionally, ChatGPT's output may also be biased due to the bias that is present in the dataset it was trained on. This can lead to the generation of text that is not diverse or inclusive.

In summary, the "The limitations of ChatGPT in creative writing" section of the article will explore some of the limitations of using ChatGPT in the creative writing process. It will discuss how ChatGPT can sometimes generate nonsensical or irrelevant text, it is not able to generate original ideas or concepts, lacks human-like emotions, creativity and imagination and its output may be biased.

Conclusion and future outlook for ChatGPT in creative writing

The "Conclusion and future outlook for ChatGPT in creative writing" section of the article will summarize the key points discussed in the article and provide a future outlook for the use of ChatGPT in creative writing.

In conclusion, ChatGPT is a powerful language model that has the potential to assist writers in improving their craft and generating new forms of literature. However, it also has its limitations and ethical considerations that need to be taken into account when using it in creative writing.

Despite its limitations, the use of ChatGPT in creative writing has the potential to revolutionize the way we think about writing and storytelling. As technology continues to advance, it is likely that ChatGPT and other AI-assisted writing tools will become even more sophisticated and user-friendly.

In the future, we can expect to see more authors and publishers experimenting with the use of ChatGPT in their work. This could lead to the creation of new forms of literature that are more interactive, immersive and open-ended. Additionally, ChatGPT could also be used to generate multiple versions of the same story, which can lead to the creation of a new form of literature that is more open-ended and allows for more interpretation by the reader.

In the publishing industry, we can expect to see more use of AI-assisted writing tools in the editing, proofreading and content creation process, which could lead to more efficient and cost-effective ways of creating literature.

However, it's important to note that the use of AI in creative writing should not replace human authors altogether. The role of human authors will always be important in creating literature, as they bring their unique perspectives, emotions, creativity and imagination to their writing.

In summary, the "Conclusion and future outlook for ChatGPT in creative writing" section of the article will summarize the key points discussed in the article and provide a future outlook for the use of ChatGPT in creative writing. It will discuss how ChatGPT has the potential to revolutionize the way we think about writing and storytelling and its use will become more sophisticated and user-friendly in the future but the role of human authors will always be important in creating literature.

Final thoughts

The article "The Potential of ChatGPT in Creative Writing" explores the capabilities and potential uses of the powerful language model, ChatGPT, in the field of creative writing. It covers topics such as ChatGPT's capabilities, current use in creative writing, potential future applications, how it can assist writers in improving their craft, ethical considerations, the impact on the publishing industry, the role of human authors in an age of AI-assisted writing, the potential for generating new forms of literature, and the limitations of ChatGPT in creative writing.

The article concludes by summarizing that ChatGPT is a powerful tool that has the potential to assist writers in improving their craft and generating new forms of literature, but also has its limitations and ethical considerations that need to be taken into account. The future outlook is optimistic and it's likely that ChatGPT and other AI-assisted writing tools will become even more sophisticated and user-friendly in the future, leading to more experimentation and innovation in the field of creative writing. However, it's important to note that the use of AI in creative writing should not replace human authors altogether.

Post by Tom Daccord

[INTRO: A recent national report by the Watson Foundation found that teachers are using ChatGPT more than students and are using it to create new lesson ideas. To help out all of our teacher friends, we are offering a series of posts focused on practical ways that you can use ChatGPT to assist with your own lesson design! Each post will focus on a practical  strategy for using ChatGPT and will include ideas for both elementary and secondary school teachers. Here is the eighth part of our series:]

#8 Creative Writing

Why chatgpt for creative writing.

ChatGPT can be used to generate writing prompts and writing suggestions that can provide ideas, inspiration and motivation for students working through parts of the creative process. It can serve as a brainstorming assistant that serves up a steady stream of ideas to provide students with more flexibility in story development and help move their writing forward.

How to use ChatGPT for Creative Writing

For starters, ChatGPT can provide creative writing prompts to help generate story ideas. It can also suggest an outline that includes a plot structure. Once students have begun writing, ChatGPT can help generate new ideas and directions after their story is underway. As a student develops a story, ChatGPT can suggest character developments and more. In all, ChatGPT can provide multiple ways to inform and motivate students to undertake and complete creative writing tasks.

ChatGPT Examples

Here are examples of how to leverage ChatGPT for creative writing:

  • Brainstorming

For many students, getting started on a creative writing assignment is the most daunting part of the writing process. Many students just don’t know where to begin if left to their own devices to come up with an idea for a story.

So, here are a few examples of creative writing prompts generated by ChatGPT:

  • “In a world where time travel is possible, a detective must solve a murder that has taken place across different eras.”
  • “A young girl discovers a magical garden in the forest behind her house, but she soon learns that the garden comes with a dangerous secret.”
  • “A person wakes up one day with the ability to read minds, but soon realizes that this power comes with its own set of problems and consequences.”

Let’s say that the student must write a creative story about “the childhood experiences of someone growing up in the 1990s.”

Here are some ChatGPT writing prompts to that end:

  • “A young girl navigates the ups and downs of middle school in the 1990s, dealing with first crushes, friendship drama, and fitting in with her peers.”
  • “A young boy is torn between his love for video games and his desire to fit in with the popular crowd at school in the 1990s.”
  • “A family moves from the city to a small town in the 1990s, and the protagonist must navigate the challenges of adjusting to a new environment and making friends.”

These prompts can serve as a starting point for writers to develop their own unique stories and characters. Students might also relate to these ideas on a personal level, based on their upbringing, and be motivated to write about them.

  • Getting Unstuck

For other students, getting started is not the most challenging part of the creative writing process. Rather, it’s generating new ideas and directions after a story has begun. Many writers (presently company included) have spent countless hours staring at their screens, not knowing what to write next. ChatGPT-3 can help writers overcome writer’s block and continue the creative writing process.

Let’s say a student has begun writing a story about “Tim,” a shy and sensitive boy in middle school who has always struggled with making friends and fitting in, due to his quiet and introverted nature.

  • Character Development : Since ChatGPT can be leveraged for character development, a student could enter her story into ChatGPT and ask: “How might Tim’s introverted nature manifest itself in his relationships with teachers at school and his parents at home?”

Here are a few ideas provided by ChatGPT:

  • “Tim may be less likely to participate in class discussions or speak up in front of the teacher. He may also struggle to approach his teachers for help or to ask questions. Despite this, Tim may still be highly attentive in class and have a strong desire to learn, making him a conscientious student.”
  • “At home, Tim’s introverted nature may manifest itself in a more withdrawn and reserved behavior. He may prefer to spend time alone, reading books or drawing in his sketchpad, and may have difficulty opening up to his parents about his experiences at school.”
  • Story Twists : Some students may be seeking a story “twist”, or a way that a story might move in a different or surprising way. ChatGPT can also help in this regard.

Here are three “twists” provide by ChatGPT:

creative writing with chatgpt

Any of these suggestions could be leveraged to move a story forward.

ChatGPT can also aid students by providing character-dialogue examples and point-of-view examples. Furthermore, it can be leveraged to maintain a consistent voice in a story and can provide students with feedback and revisions. There are even more possibilities, but ultimately the final product will hinge on the decisions, strategies and imagination of the student writer.

For many students, academic writing is often a joyless undertaking and ultimately we want students to embrace and enjoy the writing process. With its ideas and suggestions, ChatGPT can help inject energy and momentum into the writing process. ChatGPT can help students develop more enthusiasm to try out ideas and move in different literary directions. Tentative writers, in particular, may feel more confident in having a personalized guide available to suggest writing opportunities for where to begin, how to process, or what might happen next.

Keep in mind that ChatGPT may not always respond exactly as you expect. However, with a bit of creativity and effective prompts, ChatGPT can be a useful and engaging tool for creative writing with your students!

Generate Creative Ideas with ChatGPT Prompts

What would you do if you want killer content but get stuck and cannot generate creative ideas? Well, you can leverage the power of AI to overcome writer’s block. With the current technological capabilities, you can train ChatGPT to generate prompts for you.

Once you master the correct ChatGPT prompts, it will help you make your writing more creative. Whether you’re writing an essay, a video content script, or a blog post, ChatGPT can assist you in coming up with ideas for content that grab people’s attention and keep them hooked.

Whenever you start a project, it may take some time to think about your desired outcome. Fortunately, ChatGPT is a tool that can reduce ideation time by suggesting ideas for achieving your goal as quickly as possible. Although these are not perfect initially, they might inspire you to solve a problem.

Bonus Tip: State your goal and use clear, action-oriented words in your prompt, such as “generate,” “create,” “explain,” or “write. “

You can use the following prompt format:

“I want [insert your goal]. Generate [insert your desired outcome] for [insert your goal].”

Or, if you can’t think of a good title, you may use this prompt.

“I’m writing about [insert your topic]. I can’t come up with a catchy title. Provide 3 suggestions for the blog title for this blog post.”

Exploring the different types of ChatGPT prompts is also one way to get better results. The four types of prompts to use for large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT are:

Information prompts

When you prompt ChatGPT or other LLMs with an explanatory prompt, you are asking it to provide information in a specific format. Use an information prompt when you want to learn about a topic.

For example, to ask ChatGPT to explain shoppable video content, input the prompt “Explain the benefits of shoppable video content in 100 words.” Here is the outcome:

creative writing with chatgpt

Creative prompts

Creative prompts encourage the AI to generate engaging content, such as poems, stories, or scripts. You can enjoy playing with these prompts to fuel your imagination. These prompts can be paired with information prompts for your blogs, scripts, or speeches.

When used effectively, creative prompts can generate scripts for YouTube videos, keynote speeches, or meeting discussion guides. The key here is effectively setting the stage and describing what you want. Experiment and see the difference in the outcomes. If in doubt, add more information and context to guide the AI.

Instructional prompts

Use instructional prompts to request step-by-step tutorials on a specific subject. Large language models can format the response this way by searching the entire web. You can use instructional prompts for how-to guides and social media campaigns. For example, “Provide a step-by-step guide on setting up a Shopify store for a business selling cat accessories for pet lovers.”

creative writing with chatgpt

Problem-solving prompts

Problem-solving prompts are similar to creative prompts. However, these prompts have a more specific purpose: to solve a problem. Imagine ChatGPT as your competent business mentor, financial consultant, or ads specialist when using problem-solving prompts. While testing and verifying the response is still best, the suggestions help you get new ideas and learn new options to proceed with your writing.

Bonus Tip: In business and LLMs, the better you ask for what you want, the better your results will be.

Brainstorming is the initial step in creating compelling content. ChatGPT prompts can be a handy guide in researching blog topics and preparing outlines. When you enter keywords, the chatbot platform will generate possible blog ideas. However, it is recommended that you narrow down and improve the ideas generated by ChatGPT.

You may ask yourself these questions to refine the topics for your blog post:

  • What does my audience need to know?
  • What are the current trends in this topic?
  • How can I provide valuable insights on this topic?
  • What kind of story could I write around this subject matter?

Examples of ChatGPT prompts you can use for researching blog topics include:

  • “Suggest trending topics for a blog related to [your niche].”
  • “Provide blog post ideas [your niche] about [specific subject].”
  • “Give me blog post ideas that explain the latest developments in [technology or industry].”
  • Suggest blog topics that provide practical tips for [solving an issue or problem] in [your niche].”

Once you have selected a few potential topics, use them as prompts to generate an outline. This will help you get more focused information about each topic aligned to your goals and your readers’ interests.

It is crucial to consider the right tone for your target audience. The voice can vary greatly depending on the platform you are using. For instance, a more conversational tone may work best if you post on Instagram or X (formerly Twitter). For LinkedIn, it is better to go for a more professional style.

Crafting an intriguing copy that resonates with your followers is also essential. Consider what they want to learn about your brand and create content accordingly—in addition, using keywords and relevant hashtags strategically in your post so it appears in relevant searches. This ensures your post gets maximum reach and engagement.

With these tips, you can create compelling social media posts with ChatGPT that engage the audience while driving results for your business.

Podcasters and YouTubers can benefit from tools like ChatGPT to support planning, script preparation, audience engagement, and marketing. And the key to maximizing these benefits is knowing the correct prompts.

Understanding the best ChatGPT prompts for videos and podcasts can make every step of the content creation process a lot easier. And yes, these prompts can also be used in other AI chatbot tools.

Below are the significant tasks for which you can use ChatGPT prompts:

  • Topic ideation
  • Content Planning
  • Scriptwriting
  • Finding potential subjects or guests
  • Reaching out to potential sponsors
  • Marketing and promotion

Practice Collaborative Content Creation

Promoting your blog, videos, or podcast involves raising awareness about it. It entails attracting new audiences and encouraging existing ones to share it with their networks.

Promotional content creation . This can involve crafting social media posts, writing newsletter updates, or if it’s a video or podcast, creating teaser contents. ChatGPT can help you in creating this promotional content.

Collaboration outreach. Establishing partnerships with fellow content creators or relevant industry personalities can be a perfect way to reach a wider audience. ChatGPT can assist in creating outreach messages for possible collaborations.

While ChapGPT is a powerful technology with various applications, it has several limitations. Likewise, the following ethical considerations must be considered.

Bias in training data

Since the model is trained on a large dataset of text, any partiality present in that data will be reflected in the model’s response. Preparing diverse datasets to reduce bias and ensure fair and accurate outputs is essential.

Abuse of the technology

ChaGPT is prone to misuse and abuse. Its ability to generate human-like text could be used for vicious purposes like spreading misinformation. It is crucial to have safety nets in place to prevent such abuse and to hold those who abuse the technology accountable.

Security concerns

Privacy and security issues are also important ethical considerations when using ChatGPT. As the model generates text based on the user’s inputs, it may unintentionally reveal sensitive information. The results could also be used to track individuals. It is vital to formulate strict policy measures to protect user data.

Responsibilities of developers, users, and society

The responsibility of stakeholders must be considered when using ChatGPT. Developers must ensure that the model is trained on diverse and representative data. They must implement privacy policies to prevent misuse of the technology. On the other hand, users must use the technology appropriately. The society is responsible for considering the impact of technology and regulating its use as necessary.

The Future of AI

ChatGPT and other language models will become even more versatile, opening up new opportunities for content creation. It can generate text customized to the user’s needs and preferences. Also, the technology may advance in providing more natural and conversational responses to user’s queries. Another future direction of ChatGPT is the ability to understand the meaning and context of a text and provide more coherent responses. It is important to note that the key possibilities depend on the progress of technology as the number of users and queries grows.

How to push the art of writing out of a computer’s reach

robot hands breaking a pencil

N o question is more dreadfully pretentious than “What is art?” except possibly “Can you come see my one-person show?” Yet I’ve accepted that at some point in the course of a life, both will need to be answered. Because I’m a writer facing the advent of ChatGPT, the time for the first question is now.

Most people (including some writers themselves) forget that creative writing is an art form. I suspect that this is because, unlike music or painting or sculpture or dance—for which rare natural aptitude straightaway separates practitioners from appreciators—writing is something that everyone does and that many people believe they do well.

I have been at parties with friends who are dancers, comedians, visual artists, and musicians, and I have never witnessed anyone say to them, “I’ve always wanted to do that.” Yet I can scarcely meet a stranger without hearing about how they have “always wanted to write a novel.” Their novel is unwritten, they seem to believe, not for lack of talent or honed skill, but simply for lack of time. But just as most people can’t dance on pointe, most people can’t write a novel. They forget that writing is art.

Read: The college essay is dead

Art plumbs the depths of human experience and distills the emotions found there. That’s hard work, which inherently—and perhaps conveniently for me—can be done only by a human . This doesn’t mean that all art humans make is effective or good, nor does it mean that a computer cannot generate content that might entertain or inform. A computer alone can’t make art. But it can, I expect, make “good writing.”

The rise of ChatGPT forces us to think about this distinction between art and good writing—or “craft,” as we’re taught to call it. For most writers, the path to publishing involves writing-preparatory programs—workshops and private writing classes and M.F.A. programs—that are structured around the mastery of writing as a craft. But if we want human writing to survive as an art (and as a profession), these programs need to reassess their priorities because they are facing an existential crisis.

I was 41 when I took my first intensive writing course during a week-long summer workshop. Its structure, I’d come to learn, was largely based on the same pedagogical model as most M.F.A. programs: an instructor-led workshop, where we would evaluate one another’s stories, supplemented by craft talks. I found my writing so improved by the course that I wanted more. By the following year, I was enrolled in a master’s-of-fine-arts program.

I loved graduate school. I had instructors who changed how I thought about writing and my art and who I could be as an artist. But I found myself occasionally frustrated, and one particular incident from my last semester sticks in my mind.

It was the pandemic, and we were workshopping a classmate’s story that, we all agreed, wasn’t “working.” On the Zoom, we danced around the reason, but privately, in a smaller chat, some of us were more frank: The author was evading the real reason their character seemed so distressed. In other words, the story was a well-written pile of emotional bullshit.

Encountering this in a story feels the same as hearing a well phrased but feeble excuse in real life: You might accept it, but you’re not buying it. Yet the professor’s advice was all about cleaning up the point of view and adding more action. In short, mechanical fixes for an emotional problem.

Maybe the endless Zooming had finally gotten to me, or maybe it was the impatience that has struck me post-40, but suddenly I unmuted and blurted out: “I’m sorry, is this a master’s in fine arts or a master’s in fine mechanics? The sentences could be perfect, but it won’t fix the fact that the story isn’t being honest.”

To which my professor replied, “What’s wrong with being a good mechanic?”

The answer, of course, is nothing. Writing beautiful, clear sentences that string together into gorgeous paragraphs that assemble into elegantly constructed narratives requires discipline and discernment and technical understanding. My work as a novelist has absolutely benefited from the improvement of my technical skills. But literary art is not about the mechanics of sentences. It’s about how those sentences support emotional honesty.

Jonathan Malesic: What ChatGPT can’t teach my writing students

You can dissect great writing without ever analyzing or even discussing the emotions involved or evoked, and walk away with some craft strategies to deploy in your own work. But a machine can do that too. It can read— it has read —the same great writers I have read. It can (and is beginning to) learn all of the clever lessons of craft. It will almost certainly become capable of producing what many M.F.A. classes would consider “good writing.”

But if that’s the case, maybe that “good writing” isn’t so good after all. If this new technology makes such writing ubiquitous, that writing may as well be obsolete.

If we want to push the art of writing out of a computer’s reach, the questions posed in writing workshops should go past “How could this piece work better?” to “How could this piece be more honest? More emotionally effective? More resonant?”

These are tougher questions, not only because they’re more subjective, but because they require skills that go beyond the command of language: insights into human nature, imagination, innovation, creativity, a mastery of pathos, ethos, and logos. These are harder things to teach. But we can try.

Some of the problem may lie in the tendency of literary-fiction writers to disregard what mass-market novels can teach us. These books are not always masterfully written, but—if the videos of readers weeping on BookTok are evidence—they are clearly tapping into human experience and making readers feel. A hell of a lot, apparently.

Consider Colleen Hoover, who self-published for years before readers drove her romance and young-adult novels to best-seller status. A lot of her books admittedly rely on “trauma narratives”—a critique that’s lately been wielded against some literary fiction as well. But readers keep reading her because they connect to her stories of women finding love while on the brink of financial collapse or seeking to break patterns of domestic violence . Say what you will about her sentences, but no Colleen Hoover fan thinks that ChatGPT can replace her.

To be fair, the best writing teachers were already pushing students to write with emotional honesty long before AI was breathing down their neck. The greatest lesson I ever got in the art of memoir was to write the story you felt, not a recounting of what was actually lived. A course in science fiction taught me that the complex emotions of humanity can sometimes best be conveyed outside the realm of reality. A novel workshop gave me the idea of the author as a maestro, conducting the reader through an emotional journey that should have many movements and variations.

And yet despite all of this, I’m not sure I actually believe that writing as art can be taught at all. One can certainly improve and gain greater mastery over the form. But the magic stuff that makes the great literary artists what they are cannot be manufactured and replicated. At least, not in a classroom. Only, possibly, out there in the wild world, by living and observing.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to see a one-woman show.

Bio-inspired surgical coatings fight infections and monitor strain

Researchers have designed a surgical coating inspired by the structure of cicada wings that has both antimicrobial and strain mapping properties

By: Eva Cornman

While spinal plates and knee screws may help save lives and limbs, these surgical implants still face some pressing problems; notably, infection risk and device failure. To combat these issues, researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have developed a coating for orthopedic implants that can both kill invading bacteria and monitor strain on the device.

This research, published in May in Science Advances , began with a bio-inspired approach. The wings of cicadas and dragonflies have a unique mode of natural antimicrobial resistance. Rather than fighting infections with medicine or immune cells, they fight with weapons: tiny, microscopic pillars that stab and destroy invading bacteria. Along with his research team, Dr. Qing Cao, a researcher who works on electronic and optoelectronic devices at the University of Illinois, decided to replicate those pillars in the lab and spread them across the outer layer of the coating.

Cao’s team then placed extremely thin layers of silicon crystals on the inner side of the coating. When the surgical device moves or bends, it simultaneously moves the atoms in the crystals. The motion of the atoms changes the resistance, which can be detected by using external wires to flow charge through the atoms.

But this is where the challenge lies. The team was able to test their coating in live mice and on an extracted sheep spine. While both animal models showed promising results, it will take some time before the coating is ready for clinical use. The reason? The strain mapping still isn’t wireless, and it might be tricky to go about your day with wires sticking out of your back. Since publishing their results in May, Cao’s team has been working on that very problem. They’re currently exploring both Bluetooth and near-field communication as potential solutions. But even then, the coating would still need to be tested in large animal models before it could reach the clinical trial stage.

It’s a long process, but an exciting application has emerged. Cao’s team has been working on a way to scale up the antimicrobial nanopillars for potential commercial use. Things like food packaging and surfaces in hospitals or even public transportation could benefit from this simple antimicrobial mechanism. The problem, Cao says, is figuring out how to scale up “not as centimeter-by-centimeter scales as what we’re doing now, but meter-by-meter scales.”
