It is always fun to incorporate Valentine's Day in therapy. I always teach it as a day of friendship and love. I do themed lessons during the week of the holiday and I wanted to share a few of my favorites. I also wanted to share some freebies for you to use with your students.

Valentine's Day Quick No Prep Language pack. This pack is handy for all elementary caseloads. It has everything from categories to story comprehension! It also comes with a FREE Google Slides version for a digital option.

Double Dotting Speech Valentine ! I created these art activity pages for speech therapy to keep students engaged. Double Dotting Speech is unique because I incorporated two “dotting” tasks for this activity. First connect the dots and then dot the pictures! It is great for groups because the other students will have plenty to work on (coloring, connecting the dots, dotting) while you work with the other students. I have my students color the hearts in between turns (optional). Designed for an elementary caseload (some pages can be used with middle schoolers depending on skill and interest level).

A Box of Articulation Chocolates ! A super fun (no prep) articulation craft! My students love filling their chocolate boxes with speech sounds! History of Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is a holiday celebrated every February 14; this year Valentine's Day falls on a Wednesday. Across the United States and in other places around the world, candy, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine.

But who is this mysterious saint and where did these traditions come from? Find out about the meaning and history of Valentine’s Day, from the ancient Roman ritual of Lupercalia that welcomed spring to the card-giving customs of Victorian England.

The Legend of St. Valentine

The history of Valentine's Day—and the story of its patron saint—is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite?

The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Still others insist that it was Saint Valentine of Terni, a bishop, who was the true namesake of the holiday. He, too, was beheaded by Claudius II outside Rome.

Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first “valentine” greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl—possibly his jailor’s daughter—who visited him during his confinement.

Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic and—most importantly—romantic figure. By the Middle Ages , perhaps thanks to this reputation, Valentine would become one of the most popular saints in England and France.

Origins of Valentine’s Day: A Pagan Festival in February

While some believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine’s death or burial—which probably occurred around A.D. 270—others claim that the Christian church may have decided to place St. Valentine’s feast day in the middle of February in an effort to “Christianize” the pagan celebration of Lupercalia . Celebrated at the ides of February, or February 15, Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus.

To begin the festival, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at a sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. The priests would sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification. They would then strip the goat’s hide into strips, dip them into the sacrificial blood and take to the streets, gently slapping both women and crop fields with the goat hide.

Far from being fearful, Roman women welcomed the touch of the hides because it was believed to make them more fertile in the coming year. Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The city’s bachelors would each choose a name and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. These matches often ended in marriage.

Valentine's Day Meaning: A Day of Romance and Love

Lupercalia survived the initial rise of Christianity but was outlawed—as it was deemed “un-Christian”—at the end of the 5th century, when Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine’s Day. It was not until much later, however, that the day became definitively associated with love.

During the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds’ mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of Valentine’s Day should be a day for romance. The English poet Geoffrey Chaucer was the first to record St. Valentine’s Day as a day of romantic celebration in his 1375 poem “Parliament of Foules,” writing, “For this was sent on Seynt Valentyne’s day / Whan every foul cometh ther to choose his mate.”

Valentine greetings were popular as far back as the Middle Ages, though written Valentine’s didn’t begin to appear until after 1400. The oldest known valentine still in existence today was a poem written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt . (The greeting is now part of the manuscript collection of the British Library in London, England.) Several years later, it is believed that King Henry V hired a writer named John Lydgate to compose a valentine note to Catherine of Valois.

Who Is Cupid?

Cupid is often portrayed on Valentine’s Day cards as a naked cherub launching arrows of love at unsuspecting lovers. But the Roman God Cupid has his roots in Greek mythology as the Greek god of love, Eros. Accounts of his birth vary; some say he is the son of Nyx and Erebus; others, of Aphrodite and Ares; still others suggest he is the son of Iris and Zephyrus or even Aphrodite and Zeus (who would have been both his father and grandfather).

According to the Greek Archaic poets, Eros was a handsome immortal played with the emotions of Gods and men, using golden arrows to incite love and leaden ones to sow aversion. It wasn’t until the Hellenistic period that he began to be portrayed as the mischievous, chubby child he’d become on Valentine’s Day cards.

Valentine’s Day Greetings and Gifts

In addition to the United States, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France and Australia. In Great Britain, Valentine’s Day began to be popularly celebrated around the 17th century. 

By the middle of the 18th, it was common for friends and lovers of all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes, and by 1900 printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one’s feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine’s Day greetings.

Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began selling the first mass-produced valentines in America. Howland, known as the “Mother of the Valentine,” made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons and colorful pictures known as “scrap.”

Today, according to Hallmark, an estimated 145 million Valentine’s Day cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year (more cards are sent at Christmas ).

8 Fantastically Fun Valentine’s Day Speech Activities For All

It’s the month of love! That means students are sitting at their kitchen table filling out those valentine’s while their adult at home is creating an over the top Valentine’s Day mailbox that will just be thrown out after they get home. Valentine’s Day is the holiday I remember loving in school, and now as a speech therapist, I get to come up with fun activities for students to do when they come to speech therapy on this lovely holiday. Here are some Valentine’s Day speech activities I use in my speech room.

Valentine’s Day Speech Activities

Valentine’s Day speech therapy sessions are run like most holiday sessions. I never want students to feel like they are missing out on something fun because they have to come with me to the speech room. I love to incorporate the holiday into my sessions while still helping students practice the skills they need help with. The speech therapy activities below are always winners when students come to speech on Valentine’s Day.

Interactive Books

I absolutely love using interactive books during my speech therapy sessions. They work so well if you have mixed groups because you can give each student a book that focuses on their goals. I have created multiple Valentine’s Day-themed interactive books because, as I said above, I just love this holiday. 

Cupid, What Do You See on Valentine’s Day?

Cupid, What Do You See on Valentine’s Day? is a themed vocabulary interactive book. It’s a great labeling activity to introduce pictures of Valentine’s Day, such as a heart, box of chocolates, flowers, etc. Students can match the pictured items when they are named. Instructions for book assembly are included.

What Can You Do On Valentine’s Day?

What Can You Do On Valentine’s Day? is an interactive Book that introduces eight VERBS related to Valentine’s Day activities, such as hug a friend, eat chocolate, give a gift, mail a card, etc. Students can match the verbs when they are named. Instructions for book assembly are included.

Mia, Be My Valentine

Mia’s Be My Valentine WH Questions is an interactive book that is part of a book series about how Mia celebrates holidays and seasons. This interactive book is a perfect tool for students to practice answering various who, what, where, and where questions.

Interactive books are great resources and help students practice the speech-language skills needed, but they can also be used to practice holiday-specific words like Valentine’s day vocabulary.   These are just perfect addition to your Valentine’s Day speech activities because they are just so easy to use!

Valentine’s Day Worksheets

I love a fun Valentine’s Day worksheet. Students often come into the speech room all excited about the cupcakes they get to eat when passing out valentines, or they already ate that cupcake and are totally hyped up on sugar from the said cupcake. Either way, it can be hard to get them to focus. This is the time when I pull out worksheets that require some movement. Cutting, pasting, coloring, etc.

WH Questions For Valentine’s Day

These valentine’s WH question cut-outs are great practice for students who have trouble with answering and identifying WH Questions. It includes WHO, WHAT, WHERE & WHEN questions. Valentine’s Day Fun

When coming up with speech therapy ideas for Valentine’s Day, I quickly realized that I needed to incorporate some fun if I was going to actually get students to pay attention and learn throughout the session. That’s why I use these activities.

Valentine Sentence Expansion Cards

These valentine’s sentence expansion cards are great for students struggling with expanding from single words to phrases and sentences. These sheets include 40 flashcards with items you usually see on Valentine’s Day, such as hearts, flowers, cupid, etc. By adding adjectives (colors, numbers, sizes, etc.), students will be on their way to increasing their vocabulary and improving their language skills.

Valentine's Day Language: Learning Idioms, Metaphors, and Similes

Since the language of Valentine's Day cards is so flowery and romantic, it provides the perfect opportunity to help your child learn about some of the different ways people make language more interesting. In particular, you can use Valentine's Day writing to teach your child about idioms, metaphors , and similes .

Figurative Language

One way to help your child understand what you mean when you talk about figurative language is to have him look at some of his Valentine's Day cards.

Any card that uses words to compare something to something else ("your smile is like...") is using figurative language. There are three types of figurative language your child is most likely to see on Valentine's Day:

• Simile: A simile uses language to compare two things that are not alike, applying the words "like" or "as" to compare them. A good Valentine's Day example of a simile is the line " O, my Luve's like a red, red rose," an excerpt from Robert Burns' poem "A Red Red Rose."
• Metaphor: A metaphor is similar to a simile in that it compares two things that are not alike, but it doesn't use "like" or "as" to do so. Instead, a metaphor says that the first thing is the other, but figuratively. For example, Samuel Taylor Coleridge's classic lines: "Love is flower-like, Friendship is a sheltering tree" do not directly compare love and friendship to plants; they say that aspects of love and friendship are similar to aspects of trees in that, for example, they both provide a type of shelter.
• Idiom : An idiom is a phrase or expression in which the figurative meaning is different from the literal meaning of the words. For example, "having a heart of gold" doesn't mean someone has a gold heart but that a person is very generous and caring. It takes the form of a metaphor but has been used often enough to become an accepted unit of a language.

Practicing Similes and Metaphors

There are a few ways you can practice using figurative language with your child on Valentine's Day. One way is to ask her to create a list of similes and metaphors using the word "love."

They don't have to be poetic and can be silly if she wants, but make sure she identifies which ones are similes and which are metaphors. If she's having trouble, provide her with your own phrases and ask her to identify whether they are metaphors or similes.

Deciphering Idioms

Another way to practice figurative language with your child is to provide him with some Valentine or love-related idioms to try to decipher. Ask him what he thinks the phrases mean literally and then what idea they are trying to express, which might differ from the literal meaning. Here are some heart and love idioms to get you started:

• Have a change of heart
• From the bottom of my heart
• A soft spot in my heart for you
• Having a heart-to-heart talk
• My heart skipped a beat
• Home is where the heart is
• Love at first sight
• A labor of love
• No love lost
• Head over heels in love

Valentine's Day Themed Lesson Plans for Speech Therapy

I can’t believe that it’s almost Valentine’s Day! The pandemic has certainly had an effect on the way time feels, last February feels like a lifetime ago but at the same time, how in the world is it already almost Valentine's Day again?!  Valentine’s Day is a fun holiday to target and celebrate in therapy because of its adaptability and it's message! I love teaching Valentine's Day as a way to show kindness to all and bring joy and love to the people who mean the most to us.   Here are some of my favorite ideas for Valentine’s Day Lesson Plans : 

Heart Sun Catchers: These colorful hearts brighten up any therapy space ! I love to make these with my students and I usually make them several times throughout the year to match different seasons, themes and holidays.  You’ll need black cardstock/construction paper, scissors, colorful tissue paper, and contact paper.  Cut out an outline of a heart using the black paper, and stick it to one sheet of contact paper.  I usually prep and cut the contact paper and the shape outlines ahead of time to save time in therapy.  Give your students small pieces of tissue paper and have them cover the inside of the heart.  Use this opportunity to target different speech-language goals like following directions, speech sounds, phonological processes, “wh” questions, yes/no questions, grammar, vocabulary goals , etc.  You can have your students earn pieces of tissue paper as they complete speech tasks, or simply go through some targets while they craft.  Once they have filled in their hearts with tissue paper, place another sheet of contact paper over top (sticky side to sticky side) to seal the heart together.  Cut out around the black, leaving a little bit of an edge so the contact paper can stick to itself and voila! I tape them up to my window, but I've also hung them around my room using a hole punch and some string.  It’s helpful to write the student’s names on the back of the heart in white crayon/pencil before they start so they can remember which one is theirs when it’s time to take them home! 

Valentine’s Day Headbands : I think I’ve mentioned this before, but I absolutely adore tiny humans in funny headbands/hat crafts.  These Valentine’s Day Headbands are a great way to target articulation and phonology goals while crafting in therapy. Students can decorate and color their headbands while targeting speech sounds and productions!

Q-Tip Hearts: Cut out hearts on construction paper or cardstock, then have your students create designs by painting dots with Q-Tips! You can use white or color paper to start, and have your students choose the colors they want to add.  This could be a fun way to target patterns for pre-k and kindergarten students, and can be a great way to follow directions for all students. I love how functional following directions activities can be during crafts , and that you can mix up the complexity of directions easily depending on your students goals or skill levels.

Games  

Feed the Monster: Bring in old tissue boxes and have your students decorate and create their own Valentine’s Monsters.  Use construction paper, googly eyes, fuzz balls, pipe cleaners, whatever craft supplies you have on hand to make the monsters but make sure you leave an opening for the mouth to feed.  Then target whatever speech and language goals you’re working on and for correct responses give your students a heart to feed to the monster! Or print out pictures of other food items, or use play food items to see if the monster likes other things besides hearts! My students love to be silly with these types of games to see what kinds of food combinations they can come up with to feed the monster.  Sometimes I’ll hold the box and shake it until the monster “spits it out” if it truly is a disgusting combination.  Whoever can feed the monster the most food or items wins! 

Bean Bag Heart Toss: Place different hearts around your therapy space of different colors, different sizes, etc., to play bean bag toss! You can write different categories, parts of speech, synonyms, antonyms, artic sounds , etc. Smaller hearts or hearts that are farther away can be worth higher point values, or simply make them all the same.  Take turns targeting different speech-language goals or tasks and toss bean bags to earn points for every bag that lands on a heart.  Keep track of points and see who can get the highest score! 

Bouncing Hearts: I recently invested in some ping pong balls to use as snowballs during some Winter and Arctic themed games , but now they can come in handy during a Valentine’s Day game too! Take a box and cut out a heart shaped hole (the bigger the heart, the easier it will be to bounce balls into so cut the size depending on your caseload and student population.) You could paint the box to be festive for this holiday, or even use wrapping paper.  I find that Exacto knives are easiest to use when cutting things into specific shapes like a heart.  Students can earn ping pong balls by completing different speech-language targets.  You can set a designated amount (once all kids earn 10) or set the task for a specific amount of time (however many they can earn in 5 minutes) then take turns bouncing the ping pong balls off the table into the heart.  Whoever can get the most balls through the heart wins! 

Valentine’s Day Bingo: There are some great free printable options for Valentine’s Day Bingo, but I love this one from Oriental Trading because it allows me to target different Valentine’s vocabulary easily with my students! I’ve used the conversation candy hearts as bingo markers in the past and then let my students snack on them after the game or what’s great about this set is that you can use dry erase markers on it! Makes it super easy to clean in between sessions! Do your students like bingo?! We have at least one bingo day for every major holiday and my students always look forward to it!  

Other Activities

Valentine Mail Delivery: Have you ever had those students who were so active and energetic, you had a hard time keeping them engaged during therapy?! Giving students jobs and responsibilities throughout their day can be so motivating and gives them opportunities for breaks throughout their day.  Valentine’s Day is the perfect way to combine therapy goals, thematic activities and increase the responsibility for some of our students! I love to have my students create Valentines or letters to send to students or teachers in different classrooms.  I keep file folders or big envelopes in my therapy space for each classroom that students can put complete Valentines into once they’ve addressed them. Before we go out to deliver our envelopes we talk about the different pragmatic language skills that we will need while delivering our mail.  Teaching students how to interrupt appropriately, gain someone’s attention, and effectively explain what they are doing are areas that I find a lot of my students need extra support with! It’s so much fun to see them put these skills to use in a practical, functional setting and its so much more impactful than acting out different social scenarios in our therapy room .  Mail delivery is a job I’ve given to students at all points of the school year. Ever have a day where for no particular reason you just want to pull your hair out and call it a day?! Boom.  Go deliver a letter. Write a note that just says something like “You can throw this out when we’re done, but please act like it was vital for my student to give this to you.” I’ve never had a teacher question it.  We’ve all had those days right?! We've gotta help each other out! 

Broken Heart Puzzles: This is such a fun way to target language skills in a different format and with a theme! You’ll need colorful paper, scissors and a dark marker.  Cut out hearts of various sizes and colors.  Then cut them in half using different lines, shapes and styles; you basically want to make it into a puzzle piece! Then, depending on your student’s goals, write different targets on each side of the heart.  For “wh” questions, write the question on one piece and the answer on the other, kids have to match up the correct question to its answer and in doing so, they’ll complete the puzzle! You could also do this with synonyms, antonyms, homophones, rhyming words, and so much more ! If you have students that love games, make it a race! See you can match all of the hearts together the fastest.  To make it more challenging, make all of the hearts the same color, that way students really have to look at the language targets to match them together, and can’t sort just based off of the color of paper.

I’m breaking this post up into preschool , elementary , and middle school interests, so you can find what best suits your speech and language caseload!

Valentine’s Day Speech Therapy Activities for Preschool

First, check out these Valentine’s Day Following Directions task cards. I created these to work on following directions with a variety of embedded concepts. These task cards are great for preschool through first grade. This Valentine’s Day activity includes 68 following directions cards that target the following concepts:

• inclusion concepts (all, and, all but one)
• sequence concepts (first, second, middle, last)
• location / spatial concepts e (first, second, middle, last), location (top, bottom, between, next to, in front of, behind)
• temporal / time concepts (before, after, then, at the same time)

Valentine’s Day Speech Therapy Activities for Elementary Students

Valentine’s day activities for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade speech therapy students.

A fun Valentine’s Day activity to check out for your upper elementary speech students is No Prep Valentine’s Day Worksheets . You’ll enjoy using these with your second, third, and fourth-grade elementary speech therapy students. This packet includes worksheets to target a variety of language objectives, including pronouns, spatial concepts, vocabulary, comprehension, and main idea. There is also an open-ended articulation option. In other words, you will be able to write any articulation targets on the page.

Do your students love using a magnetic wand and chips?

Then I bet they will love this Chip Flips Valentine’s Day Activity ! I created this to go along with my piles of magnetic chips. These no prep pages are a hit in my speech therapy room. The best part is that they are no prep. I recommend laminating them if you print out the color version. I included low ink options. These low ink Valentine’s Day printable activity sheets are perfect for pairing with daubers.

Valentine’s Day Worksheets for 4th and 5th Graders

Valentine’s Day Articulation Activity for Speech Therapy

Try using this fun Manicure- themed activity ! This speech therapy articulation resource is just the ticket to work on speech sounds with your students. This speech therapy articulation resource includes  48 articulation sounds task cards.   Just print, cut and laminate and you’ll have an articulation activity that you can use over and over again with your speech therapy students. Use them in mixed groups and individual speech and language therapy sessions. Your speech therapy students will love the  “manicure theme”  of these articulation activities. Just choose the speech sound target, grab some play dough and let the speech fun begin!

Valentine’s Day Activities for Middle School Speech Therapy

Finally, your students will be excited to try out these Valentine’s Day Speech and Language Worksheets ! This is the perfect activity to use with your middle school speech therapy students around Valentine’s Day. It keeps them engaged and motivated. Many different skills are addressed.

Roses are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink! by Diane DeGroat is a fun story about how it’s better to be nice than mean! A great conversation starter about social skills and how to be a friend.

  Here Comes Valentine Cat  by Deborah Underwood Cat is not too sure about his new neighbor, Dog. He’s going to make a valentine for Dog, but some of them may not be quite nice… A funny story about not judging others, and being a good friend. This one is fun for elementary, as the cat gets a bit… ornery!

Free Valentine’s Day online games for teletherapy

Online games can be fun in speech teletherapy if you can give kids control of the mouse. I like to give a turn at the game after every few trials and I look for games that don’t take up too much of your precious speech therapy time to play. Here are some winners for your Valentine’s Day speech therapy sessions:

Curious George Hearts and Crafts by PBS Kids is a simple puzzle game that would be fun as a motivational activity for PK and Kinders. Find the shape to complete each of four hearts.

Valentine’s Day Puzzle at ABCya The chocolates fell out of the Valentine candy box! Little ones will enjoy matching each chocolate to the right spot in the candy box.

Be My Valentine at Starfall.com is great for PK-2nd. Make a Valentine card, build your sentence with a connecting word (and, because), and send it. Watch as your Valentine gets delivered to the character you chose! Non-readers will need your help choosing sentence parts for the card.

Valentine Parts of Speech Valentine Jeopardy from Jeopardy Labs is fun for upper elementary. Find the verbs, nouns, adverbs, and adjectives in the Valentine-themed sentences! This jeopardy game can be used for understanding grammatical parts of speech, generating new sentences with the focus words, and practicing articulation at the reading or conversational levels.

Game Word Generator from Game Gal is super useful for elementary games. Use this any time of year to generate random words or choose “Holiday” for a list of Valentine’s Day words. Use them in:

• Guess Me Describing Games Show the word to one student and have them give clues until the other students guess the item…but you can’t say the name of the item or you’re out!
• Story chain You start the story using a word you generated. The next person adds a sentence or two to the story using the next word generated, and so on. Go ahead and jump in when needed to keep the story going! You’ll target sentence construction, narratives, and articulation.
• Charades would be fun in front of the camera but set a time limit for each turn. Generate a word, then one student acts it out. Fun for conversational articulation or fluency practice.

Traditional in-person games can be fun virtually too

Simon Says: Get kids up and moving in front of the camera in your online groups, working on listening comprehension or articulation (if they are giving the directions). Make up a few Valentine’s day directions. Here are some to get you started:

• Draw a heart on your arm with your finger.
• Pretend to eat three chocolates.
• Pretend to put a valentine in an envelope.
• Put your hand on your heart.
• Hug yourself.
• Pretend to open a Valentine’s Day card.
• Blow a kiss to someone.
• Make a surprised face.

20 Questions: Hide an item (or pictured item) in a Valentine bag, box (or green screen pocket!) in front of the camera. Have students ask you questions to try and guess what it is. Great for question goals, sentence construction, describing, categories, and articulation too. A few ideas: teddy bear, cards, lollipop, candy heart, a red crayon, scissors.

Valentines’s Day jokes for speech therapy

Drop a few of these in each session this month and you’ll tickle their funny bone! Tell a joke, then explore the play on words… why is it funny?

• Valentine’s Day Jigsaw Puzzle – Choose the difficulty level right for your students, from a 4-piece puzzle to a 10-piece puzzle that has no guidelines.
• Valentine books online – ABC mouse also has 3 books you can read online, including Mr. Goat’s Valentine.

Valentine’s Day YouTube videos for teletherapy

Heart Song for Kids by the Kiboomers Practice your /l/, /v/ and sh sounds as the song repeats “I made a Valentine for you, the heart shape says I love you.”

Five Little Hearts by The Kiboomers is great for final /ts/ practice. This slow-paced song is perfect for littles.

Valentines, Valentines, What Colors Do You See? by the Kiboomers will be fun for PK groups. You or the kids can make hearts in all the colors, then hold them up as the colors are mentioned in the song. Kids can ask or answer “What color is the heart?”

Skidamarink by Super Simple Songs will give you lots of /v/ practice with “l love you” plus s-blend and /k/ practice.

Boom Chicka Boom by the Learning Station will get your students up and moving.

Valentine’s Freeze Dance with Stops is a music video that stops and displays “FREEZE!” Great for a quick movement dance party.

Is it Kind? A Speech Therapy Social Skills Activity by me-Speech Sprouts Work on verbs and social skills. What’s happening in each picture? Is it kind? Why or why not? Use annotation tools to draw lines from the lovebugs to the kind actions. Discuss “What have you done that’s kind?

Valentine’s day books for speech therapy.

Valentine’s Day is a GREAT opportunity to target those social language concepts (kindness, humility, giving, etc). As always picture books are a part of nearly EVERY therapy session I have. I’m sharing some of my favorite books I like to use for Valentine’s Day. You can download the free book companions at the bottom of the post to print and have handy as you use them too!

My favorite Valentine’s Day books for Speech Therapy

Although there are many great books, here are my favorite Valentine’s Day books to us in Speech Therapy. Comment below with your favorites and how you use them.

Hedgehugs   by Steve Wilson and Lucy Tapper – I absolutely LOVE hedgehogs – the illustrations in this board book are precious. A delightful look at friendship and perseverance.

Language goals I use it for:

• growth mindset
• story recall
• grammar: adjectives!
• compare/contrast

Somebody Loves You Mr. Hatch   by Eileen Spinelli – This book offers numerous social language opportunities and embedded messages. Call attention to the muted hues during “sad” parts that become brighter illustrations during times he is “happy.” This helps readers connect to the images of the book for deeper connections and understanding.

Roses Are Pink Your Feet Really Stink   by Diane DeGroat – You can probably read in the title how I use this book – social language! An EXCELLENT book for discussing things we think about vs. what is appropriate to say or write to someone.

Love, Splat   by Rob Scotton – The beloved Splat The Cat does not disappoint in this Valentine book. A great way to celebrate having courage when you are nervous and knowing that there is someone to love and accept you for who you are. I love this book for bullying issues and for trying to “outdo” others.

Are you on the lookout for fun and easy speech therapy activities for Valentine's Day?

These fun and easy games, songs, and resources will have your preschool and kindergarten students engaged in learning during your speech and language therapy sessions. Use these free speech therapy activity ideas to celebrate Valentine's Day to target speech sounds, receptive language, wh-questions, expressive language and more!

Youtube has a tonne of fun and engaging Valentine's Day songs for preschool and early elementary students! Songs are a great way to incorporate movement and fun into your speech therapy session. Some of my favorite songs are If you Love me and You Know it (great for verbs) and 5 Big Valentines (great repetitive lyrics). Check out my No Prep Song Companions ! Includes loads of song companions to use year round, not just at Valentine's Day!

One of the ways I save money on books is using YouTube Read Aloud . This lets me try out the book before I buy it! Some of my favorite YouTube Read Alongs are Pete the Cat: Valentine's Day is Cool!, Olivia and the Perfect Valentine , and The Night Before Valentine's Day. You can pair theme with these Valentine's Day Visuals to help your students with Comprehension and Retell.

Make Valentine's Day Cards: This is such a fun and easy craft. You can make it as open ended or structured as you wish. Grab some glue, tape, stickers, construction paper, and glitter (if you're brave), and get crafting!

Valentine's Day Party : Have a party with stuffs and dolls. You can mail your Valentine's to your friends. This its great for pronouns, possessive 's, turn taking, verb tenses, and social skills.

Valentine's Day Sensory Bin: I have a Sensory Bin for every season and holiday and they're all included in my Sensory Bins for Speech Therapy Product ! I love to use heart erasers, shredded pink paper, artificial rose petals, and plastic gems in my Valentine's Sensory Bin.

Valentine's Day Interactive Story : This story is available as a BOOM Card and as a Printable PDF. Each page of the story includes picture options to complete the scene . Not only does this provide opportunities to target a variety of goals , it also allows you to re-use the book with the same student because each time you read it, it’s a different story!

Valentine's Day WH-Questions : Each of the 40 questions are VALENTINE'S DAY RELATED and provide 3 visual options for students. This is a great way to build independence in little learners!

Last but not last, this no-prep Valentine Unit has loads of visuals, crafts, games, and structured activities for grammar, wh- questions , phonological processing and more! You will be able to use these speech therapy activities with your entire caseload. Best part? Just print and go!! Over 70 pages of activities and ideas!

Valentine’s Day Themed Activities and Resources for Speech and Language Therapy

Do you need new Valentine’s Day-themed activities and resources for your speech and language therapy sessions? I know for the longest time, I would have my students create valentine’s day cards for their parents and while doing so we would target their articulation sounds, language used to follow directions and give instructions, etc… Although that is still an engaging and functional activity for my students, it does get exhausting doing it session after session and year after year. Valentine’s Day Activities for Speech Therapy Sessions

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. What are you doing to celebrate?

I made these simple Valentine’s Day themed goodies for my son’s preschool class. Thank you, Skinny Pop ! I’m feeling so accomplished! Amazon affiliate links included for your convenience.

Now, I’m excited to share what I’m doing in my speech therapy sessions! Many of these activities include items from my Valentine’s Day product that is loaded with fun stuff to learn vocabulary associated with holiday – 52 pages and only $2.75 – yay!

Sensory Bin Fun

Hide flashcards – vocabulary words related to the Valentine’s Day in – a sensory bin. Have your students pick up the flashcards using tongs !

These unique Say, Color, and Display coloring sheet s are a fantastic way for students to see how to make the first sound in the word  – see the visual mouth cue in the top left corner? Use crayons, markers, glitter bingo markers, watercolor paints, OR the annotation tools on zoom for your virtual leaners!

Disperse the puzzles on a table top or floor and watch your students put them together and say the words!

Read some books about Valentine’s Day

There are so many wonderful Valentine’s Day books that explain the holiday, the tradition of writing Valentine’s, and express the general sentiment of loving and respecting each other. We need more warm feelings today!

Sandra Boynton’s Snuggle Puppy is an adorable, heart-warming book that is perfect to read year round but I like introducing it to families on my caseload around Valentine’s Day.

Play – Mail Some Valentines!

Use the valentines created in my Valentine’s Day produc t and mail them using a pretend play mailbox! Take it to the next level by smacking on a stamp and mailing them to family and friends! Do this activity even if your child cannot write! Scribbling encourages our children to become literate individuals!

Simple Craft – I Love You to Pieces

I Love You to Pieces only involves glue, a heart worksheet, and some ripped paper – can use tissue paper, construction paper, newspapers, or anything you have around the house! For toddlers and young preschoolers target those verbs like “rip”, “stick”, “rub”, “help” – I write about the importance of learning verbs in my book, My Toddler’s First Words .

3 FREE Speech Therapy Valentine’s Day Activities

Who doesn’t love free speech therapy Valentine’s Day activities that can help them get through the month? I know February can be bananas with progress reports and IEP meetings, so you can rest easy knowing you will have easy and engaging Valentine’s Day activities for your students! Today, I am sharing my three FAVE free speech therapy Valentine’s Day activities with you.

Easy Mixed Group Craft for Valentine’s Day

Use this free Valentine’s Day Mouth Loves _____ to pieces craft to cover ANY goal on your caseload. It is super low prep. You just need to print the mouth template and grab any colored construction paper.

You can have students write words that are related to their goals. Or, if you have students glue their target pictures to the craft. 

Love using crafts? There are a LOT of great February crafts for speech therapy.

Speech Therapy Valentine’s Day Verbs and Vocabulary Activities

When it comes to serving our students with language goals, we want themed materials that can cover a lot of different language goals. Did you know that it takes children with language impairments up to 36 engagements with a word before they master it? That’s why it is super important for the word targets you chose. When you use a Valentine’s Day theme, you want to choose words related to the theme. Those words are more likely to appear in the Valentine’s Day books you read and the words being discussed in the classroom in February.

List of Valentine’s Day Verbs to Use in Speech Therapy

If you are needing some ideas for themed verb lists for Valentine’s Day, here are some examples in the picture. You can use the EBP strategy of conversation recasting paired with explicitly explaining the grammar rule to teach different verb markers. 

Valentine’s Day Grammar Worksheet Activity

Are you struggling with keeping your older students motivated to practice their language goals? That’s when you introduce a challenge to them and it changes everything.

Giving your students a challenge, it makes the activity about what they produce rather than what you are directing them to do in the session. So, you can search Valentine’s Day photos on Google Photos and use those with this lesson. Have students write sentences or short stories about the pictures. Give them a challenge card to have them try and include elements in their writing. After you give them some time to write sentences, you can give them points for the elements in the sentence. Valentine’s day is all about friendship, love, and fun! Enjoy my speech therapy valentine's day activity.

I have 2 free activities here:

Speech Therapy Valentine's Day Activity: No Hands

To celebrate this fun holiday, gran a piece of blank paper and some stickers, hearts, or whatever you have!

 You can use this activity any which way you want to; however, I will explain my favorite “game” to play with any child. It is adaptable to target any speech or language skill.

How To Play:

• Grab your materials
• Give a blank card to each student
• Place the decorations on the table but out of reach 
• Each student gets a turn to choose a decoration to glue on their card; HOWEVER, no one can point to the desired pictures (hence the “no hands” name). 
• Instead, each person has to describe which picture he/she wants using some attribute such as color, size, pattern, shape, category, or function. 

Skills To Target:

Again, you can target any skill; however, below are some of my favorites.

• Grammar (verb tense, pronouns)
• Use of complete sentences/complex sentences 
• Length of utterance 
• Vocabulary 
• Descriptive vocabulary (size, color, shape)
• Articulation  

* For Sorting: Organize the decorations by attribute before starting the game. This is a great idea if your students need a lot of cues or are still in the direct teaching phase of learning. Some ideas for categories are:

• Location 

How To Cue:

Cueing during this game is the most crucial part! Use the pictures as the visual prompts.

• If a child is having trouble describing a desired picture, use the pictures themselves as visual prompts. For example, if a student says “I want a heart,” lay out all the hearts. 
• Then, verbally prompt for another category such as color or size. 
• As the student adds another descriptive vocabulary word, take the pictures away until one is left. 
• Then, the student repeats the whole phrase. For example, “I want the small, red heart.”

Easy and effective!

Following Directions: Preschool to Early Elementary

If your child or student needs to work on following directions, this is a great activity to work on just that!

Following directions requires a person to know vocabulary, have working memory skills, and adequate attention.

Below are some practice ideas for following directions while making a card. Make sure to pay attention to the type of "direction" words you are using and be aware of your child's vocabulary level as well as attention. 

Sequential:  This direction is multi-step and something has to be done first, second, etc..

• First, glue and on the heart and then the balloon.

Before/After:   This is a temporal direction. Your child has to do something before or after he/she does something else. This is TRICKY!

• Before you glue on the candy, glue on a heart.

Spatial:   Give a direction with a spatial aspect (under, over, above)

• Put the candy under the heart

Basic:  Basic means one-step, simple directions. If your child is having trouble, start here!

• Give me the glue
• Glue on the kisses and hugs

Flowers, chocolates, handwritten cards — and flash mobs.

People around the world expressed their love in myriad ways on Valentine’s Day: hanging hundreds of paper hearts in the streets to honor a recently deceased “Valentine’s Day Bandit” in Portland, Maine; vowing to cherish and obey democracy by casting votes in Valentine’s Day-themed polling stations in Indonesia; and donning heart-shaped sunglasses at a victory rally for the Super Bowl-winning Kansas City Chiefs.

Images captured by Associated Press photographers around the globe Wednesday showed love is a many-faceted emotion, employed not just to root for long-lasting romances but to fight for justice and counteract anger and hatred.

In Rome, activists wearing matching red-and-black T-shirts reading “One Billion Rising” created a flash mob at the famed Spanish Steps to call for an end to violence against women and girls. In Kenya’s capital of Nairobi, women held candles and flowers during a “Dark Valentine” vigil to protest the deaths of at least 16 women police believe were killed by their partners this year.

In Washington, D.C., where the vitriol of politics usually reigns, giant fake candy hearts reading “keep the faith,” “reach out” and “be kind” sprouted from the White House Lawn, and pink-and-red paper valentine’s greetings covered the walls of the East Landing. One enormous card from President Joe Biden’s first lady read, “Happy Valentine’s Day 2024. Xoxo Jill.”

For many, love means having a sense of humor, whether it’s gathering to celebrate being “married for one day” and mounting life-size kissing skeletons at a “‘Til Death Do Us Part” installation in Bucharest, Romania, or carving a dozen hearts and scrawling the message “I love my wife” in the dirt covering the back of a van after a nor’easter in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Tradition also had its place. Couples embraced in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, viewed by many as the City of Love; posed for a selfie in front of a hotel in St. Petersburg, Russia, where windows were lit to form a heart; or bought heart-shaped balloons from vendors next to the Bosphorus in Istanbul.

In the ultimate gesture of Valentine’s Day, Justin Shady proposed to his girlfriend, Nicolette Miller, with a giant, lit-up billboard during a Love in Times Square event in New York. She said “yes,” and amid floating streamers and clouds of confetti, the couple sealed the deal with a kiss.

5 great movies to watch on Valentine’s Day

W hat better way to get in the spirit of Valentine’s Day than by watching a movie? While none of these movies are set around the holiday, they involve love and romance, two of the key ingredients of Valentine’s Day. If you’re looking for something with a happy ending, you came to the right place.

There are thousands of movies within the romance genre, and we picked out five that you can watch on Valentine’s Day. All five films are available on streaming, so you don’t need to leave your house or pull up your credit card information. Our selections include an airplane romance that just came out in 2024, a defining film from the 1980s, and an underrated rom-com from the 2000s.

Upgraded (2024)

The newest rom-com arriving just in time for Valentine’s Day is Upgraded . Ana ( Do Revenge’s Camila Mendes ) is an intern who dreams of working at a top art gallery. For that to happen, Ana must start at the bottom of the corporate ladder, with the hope of receiving a recommendation to advance he career. The person whom Ana must persuade is Claire Dupont (Marisa Tomei), a top New York City art director with a reputation for being difficult, à la Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada.

Much to her surprise, Ana is summoned on a work trip to London and receives an upgrade to first class. While enjoying the luxurious seating and complimentary champagne, Ana meets Will (Archie Renaux), and the two flirt for the rest of the flight. When Will mistakes Ana for her boss, she doesn’t correct him and goes along with her new identity. Instead of fessing up, Ana doubles down and poses as her boss as she navigates her new double life. How long can she keep the ruse up before Will discovers the truth?

She’s All That (1999)

Nothing screams Valentine’s Day more than a cheesy 1990s teen romantic comedy . Enter She’s All That , a modern adaptation of My Fair Lady . Zack Siler (Freddie Prinze Jr.) is the king of his high school. The soccer star is dealt a punishing blow to his ego when his girlfriend, Taylor (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe), dumps him for a reality TV star. With his popularity diminishing, Zack says Taylor is replaceable with any girl in the school.

Hearing this, Zack’s buddy, Dean Sampson (Paul Walker), challenges his friend to transform an ordinary girl into the school’s prom queen. The girl in question is Laney Boggs (Rachael Leigh Cook), an unpopular nerd. Zack accepts and starts to befriend Laney. What begins as a mission eventually becomes a romance, forcing Zack to choose between winning a bet or hurting the person he loves.

Sixteen Candles (1984)

John Hughes is the Michael Jordan of teen comedies. Hughes helmed some of the most iconic coming-of-age films from the 1980s, including Ferris Bueller’s Day Off , Weird Science ,  and The Breakfast Club . However, his first directorial debut, Sixteen Candles , is probably his most sincere.

Sam Baker’s (Molly Ringwald) 16th birthday is anything but magical. Sam’s family forgets her birthday because of her sister’s wedding the next day. At school, Sam yearns for the popular senior, Jake Ryan (Michael Schoeffling). Yet, the only boy to give Sam the time of day is a nerdy freshman named Ted (Anthony Michael Hall). Will Sam’s birthday wish to be with Jake come true?

Licorice Pizza (2021)

Paul Thomas Anderson explores young love in the San Fernando Valley in the Oscar-nominated Licorice Pizza . In 1973, Gary Valentine (Cooper Hoffman), a 15-year-old child actor, meets 25-year-old photographer Alana Kane (Alana Haim) on his school’s picture day. Undeterred by their age difference, Gary asks Alana on a date, which she surprisingly accepts. From there, the two form an unlikely friendship that emerges into a business partnership selling waterbeds.

Over time, Gary wants to be more than friends, but Alana does her best to keep things platonic. As Gary and Alana try to separate, their paths inevitably intersect, forcing the friends to confront their feelings for each other.  Licorice Pizza capitalizes on Anderson’s strengths – good writing and an eye for emerging talent – as he pens a nostalgic love letter to his hometown.

Definitely, Maybe (2008)

Ryan Reynolds is an excellent action hero, with Wade Wilson in Deadpool  being his signature role. Before playing the “Merc with a Mouth,” Reynolds’ was best known for starring in rom-coms from the 2000s. There’s a case to be made that Reynolds is a better romantic lead than a superhero because of his performance in Definitely, Maybe .

After an eye-opening sex education class, Maya Hayes (Abigail Breslin) begs her father, Will (Ryan Reynolds), to explain how he met her mother. Despite going through a divorce, Will reluctantly agrees to explain his relationships with three women (Elizabeth Banks, Isla Fisher, and Rachel Weisz), changing their names so Maya can guess which one is her mother. Reynolds is the perfect leading man in a rom-com, with the looks, charm, and personality to back it up. Maybe after Deadpool and Wolverine , Reynolds can return to his roots and make a rom-com.

Censorship or safety? US Supreme Court to consider Wyoming election buffer zone challenge

Us supreme court will decide whether or not to weigh in on wyoming's years-long election buffer zone battle.

The U.S. Supreme Court will decide whether to hear a Wyoming-born First Amendment challenge to the state’s buffer zones restricting campaigning around polling sites.

The lawsuit claims that Wyoming’s Election Day buffer zone, which prevents campaigning within 300 feet of any polling place, creates ‘zones of censorship,’ violating federal precedent and the First Amendment.

According to Stephen Klein, a Washington D.C.-based attorney representing Cheyenne resident and plaintiff John Frank, Wyoming’s buffer zone law goes against the precedent set in the 1992 Supreme Court case Burson v Freeman, which found 100-foot political buffer zones to be constitutional.

“I don’t think it was ever meant to be as extensive as it is. The Election Day Zone is 300 feet or 100 yards in Wyoming, which is three times the radius that was upheld in Burson,” Klein said.

To Klein, the buffer zone question speaks directly to freedom of speech and censorship.

“Allowing people to enter and exit a polling place without being harassed is very important, but 100 yards, the length of a football field, is much too far. You just can’t censor so much speech in the name of that interest,” Klein said.

The state has filed waivers with the Supreme Court, indicating they will not respond unless asked. This puts the future of the case in the hands of the nation’s highest court, which only accepts about 100-150 cases out of more than 7,000 petitions per year—meaning the chances of the case being heard are slim.

Wyoming Attorney General Bridget Hill declined to comment, citing a policy of not commenting on pending cases.
