Activity: Perform a poem

year 6 creative writing pdf

Read the poem, talk about what it means, and perform it to an audience.

5. Find story inspiration

You can find fun story ideas anywhere! Why not raid your kitchen cupboards or hunt through the attic to find lost treasures? Anything from an old hat to a telescope will do the trick. What could the object be used for? Who might be looking for it? What secrets could it hold? Suggest different genres such as mystery or science fiction and discuss how the item might be used in this kind of story.

Real-world facts can also be a great source of inspiration. For example, did you know a jumping flea can accelerate faster than a space rocket taking off into orbit? What crazy story can your child make out of this fact? Newspapers and news websites can be great for finding these sorts of ideas.

For more storytelling ideas, download our free Story idea generator  or our Character profile activity sheet .

6. Draw your ideas first

If your child isn’t sure where to start with a story or even a piece of non-fiction, it can sometimes be helpful to sketch out their ideas first. For instance, can they draw a picture of a dastardly villain or a brave hero? How about a scary woodland or an enchanted castle?

Your child might also find it useful to draw maps or diagrams. What are all the different areas of their fantasy landscape called? How is the baddie’s base organised?

Some children might enjoy taking this idea a step further and drawing their own comics. This is great practice – it stretches your child’s creativity, gets them thinking about plot, character, and dialogue, and is a big confidence boost once they’ve finished and have an amazing story to look back on.

What your child will learn

In Year 6 (age 10–11), your child will be aiming to build upon the goals and expectations they were first set in Year 5. They will be expected to:

  • Identifying the audience for and purpose of the writing
  • Noting and developing initial ideas, drawing on reading and research where necessary.
  • Selecting appropriate grammar and vocabulary, understanding how such choices can change and enhance meaning
  • In narratives, describing settings, characters and atmosphere and integrating dialogue to convey character and advance the action
  • Using a wide range of devices to build cohesion within and across paragraphs
  • Using further organisational and presentational devices to structure text and to guide the reader (for example, headings, bullet points , and underlining).
  • Assessing the effectiveness of their own and others’ writing
  • Proposing changes to vocabulary, grammar and punctuation to enhance effects and clarify meaning
  • Ensuring the consistent and correct use of tense throughout a piece of writing
  • Ensuring correct subject and verb agreement when using singular and plural , distinguishing between the language of speech and writing and choosing the appropriate register.
  • Proof-read for spelling and punctuation errors.

Handwriting, spelling, grammar, and punctuation are all important aspects of writing too. You can find out more about them on our dedicated pages:

Creative writing prompts – 5 worksheets plus word mats for KS1 and KS2 pupils

Laura Dobson

5 PDF creative writing prompts worksheets for KS1-KS2, plus 7 PDF word mats

Want to fit more creative writing into your school timetable but not sure where to start? These fun writing prompts take just ten minutes and are perfect for slotting in to small gaps in your day.

They’ll get children’s creative juices flowing and hopefully improve their writing skills too.

This download contains five creative writing prompts , suitable for KS1 and KS2 pupils, including:

Write your own Harry Potter paragraph

year 6 creative writing pdf

In this challenge, pupils will create a new character for Harry Potter to meet while aboard the Hogwarts Express train. They’ll need to think about who the character is, what they look like (including any distinguishing feature), and why they’re on the train.

Children can then use these ideas to write the next paragraph of the story starter on the worksheet.

Browse more ideas for  teaching with Harry Potter .

Character capers

year 6 creative writing pdf

You’ll need a 1-6 dice for this activity. Pupils roll a dice three times to find out who their character is, what their personality is like and what job they do. For example, they might be a grumpy dinosaur who works in a museum, or an excitable superhero who works in a school.

Children can then use this information to draw their character, think about questions they’d like to ask them, or come up with story ideas featuring their character.

Setting soup

year 6 creative writing pdf

This worksheet features four intriguing setting photos. Children can select their favourite then fill in a mind map about it, imagining what they see, hear, feel and smell.

Next they need to create an ingredients list for their setting, such as:

  • A dollop of calmness
  • A drizzle of a beautiful sunset
  • A generous helping of a still ocean

Browse more resources for setting description .

Writing consequences template

year 6 creative writing pdf

This classic classroom game will help children come up with the basic outline for a complete story. Working in pairs or groups, they’ll need to fill in character names, locations, actions and dialogue to create an amusing outcome.

Roll and write a story

year 6 creative writing pdf

Use a dice alongside this worksheet to generate two characters and a setting – such as a mythical creature and a time machine traveller in a busy city.

Pupils can use their generated ideas to write a story outline or create a book cover and blurb. For younger children, do the activity as a class and draw a picture or write about the outcome.

Bonus download: creative writing word mats

year 6 creative writing pdf

Assist students with their independent creative writing by printing out these useful vocabulary mats. Pupils can browse a range of exciting phrases and select ones to use in their own work. Included in the download:

  • Create a spooky atmosphere
  • Write an adventure story
  • Describe a character’s appearance
  • Describe a character’s personality
  • Describe how a character moves
  • Describe how a character speaks
  • Describe a mythical beast

Hello Year 6!

smiley

Today is the beginning of Summer Term 2 and although, again, it is very different to what we have been used to –  we need to make the most of it.

Starting today we are back to a formal way of learning and working, with tasks and activities that are hopefully going to help you prepare for Secondary School.

I want you to try really hard to complete these tasks daily and get yourself back into some kind of structure and working routine.

Please upload as many of your tasks as you can, onto Dojo or you can email them to me., to show that you are engaging.

I will be back in touch with you all this week via email and telephone where we will have a chat as to how your work is going.

It really is important that you engage as much as you possibly can!

Have a great a week, work hard and stay safe. I hope to see you all soon.

Love Mrs Douglas.

Well Year 6, this should have been your SATs week!

Some of you may be feeling very relieved, some of you may feel disappointed and some of you may be wondering … What would have happened?!

Know that I am very proud of you all, I miss you dearly and I am still cheering you all on in everything you do and hope you are keeping safe. A huge well done to you, for engaging with the tasks and the learning I am setting,  I know it is not easy and it is wonderful to see your efforts via email and DOJO!

As you will see this week is different and it is all about celebrating you as this is what we would have been doing in school this week – it would all be about you!! (I have also put on some Maths activities there for those of you who asked for more Maths work! We will go back to more formal learning next week.)

But for now, try to keep up with your daily reading, TT Rock stars and your other programs but have fun this week, with these activities! You deserve it.

Hello Everybody!

I hope you are all keeping safe, staying at home and taking very good care of yourselves and your families. I am missing you all very much and sending lots of love.

Unfortunately, we are not going to see each other for a while, so I will be updating this class page weekly with new learning, different activities and lots of encouragement to keep you all going.

To allow us to share our wonderful work and new learning I have created us a class page using the app Class Dojo. Adults you should have an email regarding joining information. If this is not the case please contact me via; [email protected]

On the weekly plan I have highlighted which tasks I would like to see uploaded onto our Class Dojo page so that we can see how we are all getting on. Other online tasks will be recorded on the system with a start and end date.

Great news - You are now able to quiz at home using Accelerated Reader.

All children MUST complete the quizzes INDEPENDENTLY.

Please make sure you allow children to complete quizzes on books that they have read, on their own – as this impacts their current reading age that we are monitoring in school.

To access the site;  https://ukhosted60.renlearn.co.uk/2235882

Children have their own log in to be able to quiz on books they have read.

Stay safe, thinking of you all, love Mrs Douglas x x
