Subjects Covered in Online IAS Coaching

Online coaching for UPSC exam includes a broad spectrum of subjects. This prepares aspirants for the Civil Services Examination. The exam structure is divided into three unique stages. These are the Preliminary exam, the Mains exam, and the Interview or Personality Test. Each stage evaluates various skills needed for a role in civil services. A brief explanation of these 3 phases:

Preliminary Exam:

The Preliminary exam, often referred to as Prelims, acts as the initial filtering stage. It comprises:

GS Paper I: This paper covers a wide array of topics such as Geography, Polity, Economy, Ecology, Science, and Current Events. It aims to assess a candidate’s general awareness and its significance in governance.

GS Paper II: also known as CSAT, evaluates analytical abilities. This includes comprehension and decision-making capabilities. To pass prelims, candidates must secure at least a 33% score in this paper.

Mains Examination:

Moving on to the Mains examination, it is the second phase for those who clear the Prelims. This phase is descriptive, focusing on the depth of knowledge and the ability to present information effectively. The syllabus is extensive and includes:

General Studies Papers: There are four papers dedicated to General Studies. These cover a broad range of subjects including Heritage, Governance, Technology, and Ethics. (Refer to the provided syllabus for complete details)

Optional Subject: Here, candidates select an optional subject from a list offered by UPSC . This selection allows them to specialize in an area of their interest.

Essay Paper: In this segment, candidates must write essays on two topics, choosing one from each of the two sections provided. The essay paper scrutinizes the candidate’s skill in constructing well-reasoned arguments on complex issues within a limited timeframe. (For tips, look up: Essay Writing for UPSC Exam )

Language Papers: Candidates are tested in two languages. One is of the candidate’s choice from the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, and the other is English. Both papers serve as qualifying in nature.

Interview/Personality Test

At this phase, the examination goes beyond mere knowledge assessment. It scrutinizes the aspirants’ personal characters, quick thinking, leadership capabilities, and ability to relate socially. The evaluating panel determines the suitability of candidates for a civil service career. This segment holds significant weight as it influences their overall ranking and the allocation of services.

UPSC Online Coaching’s Role: The significance of online coaching for the UPSC exam is profound. It delivers exhaustive preparation across all the examination stages. In fact, during the coaching, you cultivate the necessary traits for these three important phases. It allows you to simultaneously understand the subjects for both the Prelims and the Mains. This dual approach fosters a deeper comprehension of topics for the Mains while aiding in the retention of facts for the Prelims. Consequently, preparation for both examinations progresses in tandem.

Teachers not only introduce you to relevant current affairs but also teach you how to incorporate them into your UPSC answer writing. This integration skill is crucial for the exam.

Our UPSC online coaching engage candidates in regular mock tests for both the Prelims and the Mains. They participate in simulated interviews to prepare for the final hurdle. This holistic approach ensures readiness in academics, and personality development. Excelling in both domains is crucial for success in the Civil Services Examination.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)

Answer:  Yes, if adequate study material is available, interactive sessions with experienced faculty are available, and mock tests and practise papers are provided for regular assessment of the candidate, UPSC online coaching can be extremely beneficial in IAS Civil Services preparation.

Answer:  When you have to cover a syllabus as extensive as the UPSCs, every minute counts. Enrolling in a coaching institute can eliminate that extra work from your routine, allowing you to focus solely on your ultimate goal.

Answer:  After each class in the regular classroom course, the videos of the lectures are uploaded to our study portal. Even after the course is completed, you will have access to these videos for review. All of the study material books are shipped to your address within 10 days. Similarly, the test series are also administered online via our study portal. So you don’t notice any difference between the classroom and the online course.

Answer:  Students enrolled in our classroom courses can ask their teachers for clarification at any time. We understand that if a student has a question, it should be answered right away. As a result, our teachers are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to assist students with their problems.

Answer:  Elite IAS has always provided its students with high-quality content, and now it is assisting them with current-affairs seminars. The most effective way to prepare for current events is to use high-quality content and classes. Students benefit from the classes because they learn what to study and how to study.

Answer:  Students should begin studying Current Affairs on a regular basis and not wait until the exam date to do so. Students should start studying at least ten months before the Prelims. Regular coverage of current events allows a student to stay informed, arrange events, learn more deeply, and analyse.

Answer:  No, it’s a fallacy that you need to take a course to pass the exam. Self-study is sufficient for preparation. However, the true difference that coaching institutes make is that they improve your preparation by providing good supervision, be it UPSC online coaching or offline.

Any queries we will call you, important elements of an essay.

Essay writing is an art and so by the very definition can be learnt by practicing it correctly.

Truth be told, there is not a single and specific way to write an essay and for that matter GS answers too, what is more, important is to have an approach and keeping oneself open to ideas and creativity.

We strictly ask you not to have any mental block about Essay’s; do not mug up anything, as said by  Edgar Rice Burroughs: “I have been successful probably because I have always realized that I knew nothing about writing and have merely tried to tell an interesting story entertainingly”.

The final and often unstated rule of good writing is Practice, practice and practice. Practicing one’s craft is how one internalizes and perfects it. So it would suffice to end with relevant thought: “Hard Work beats the Talent when Talent doesn’t Work Hard”.

Shubham Singh

Attending classes by Shabbir sir was the turning point in my UPSC preparation. Apart from UPSC Preparations, there were many other aspects that I have learnt from the classes. The structure of writing answers in which I have excelled would not have been possible without the guidance of Shabbir sir.

Anjali Shrotriya

Shabbir Sir teaches in a way that helps us address questions in exams. This along with Model Answers gives an idea about how to write and answer in Mains. The handwritten answers were a life-saving strategy and made my answer-writing experience easier.

Dheenah Dastageer

Essay was more than class; it was learning via interaction and conversation. It was one of the best experiences and enriching. It took care of all aspects starting from sentence framing to ideation. The detailed coverage of Previous Year Questions via assignments was the most appropriate approach.

Kriti Chachra

With Right Mentorship provided by the Edukemy anyone can qualify the exam in the very first step. The exam is also of your own personal awareness. Focus on your strength and weakness.

Sonalika Jiwani

Model Hand-Written Answers, provided by the Edukemy, helped in articulating the answers in Mains and came handy while revising the complete syllabus just before the Mains.

Deeksha

I have cleared UPSC CSE this year (AIR-331, UPSC CSE 2021). Want to thank Edukemy from the bottom of my heart as I had geography optional in which I got help from Shabbir Sir. A big thanks to you sir and your team. It's your dedication towards us (students) that help us excel and achieve our dream.

Vandana Meena

The Interview Guidance Programme helped me analyze my strong and weak points. The mentors taught me to stay at ease and be up-front, which paid off in the final Interview.

Divya Arjun Gunde

I am very happy with the One-on-One Interview Session that I got to attend with Edukemy. The Panel Discussion was enlightening, and it helped me gauge the areas where improvement was required!

The Importance of IAS Coaching in Civil Services Preparation

IAS coaching involves comprehensive support tailored to candidates aiming to excel in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) examinations, including the Civil Services Examination (CSE), and the Indian Forest Service Examination (IFSE), among others. Its primary objective is to guide aspirants effectively, potentially minimizing the number of attempts required to achieve their desired rank, post, and cadre.

Quality IAS coaching extends beyond classroom instruction, offering valuable post-class assistance such as mentorship, assessments, schedules, and supplementary resources to reinforce learning.

Effective IAS coaching ensures students retain and apply the knowledge acquired during classes, empowering them to tackle various assessment formats confidently.

What are the benefits of IAS coaching?

IAS coaching provides candidates with structured guidance, study materials, simulated exams, and expert insights to bolster their prospects in the fiercely competitive IAS examinations.

Consider a scenario where you aspire to become an IAS Officer. Upon reviewing the syllabus, you notice potential overlaps between the Prelims and Mains syllabi. The sheer volume of questions becomes overwhelming while exploring the previous year's questions (PYQs) for insights.

Quality IAS coaching includes mentors who possess intimate knowledge of when questions on specific topics typically appear in the actual exam. This streamlines your study process, saving time and effort in navigating vast amounts of material for targeted analysis.

This is why we advocate for the  GS Integrated Course , among the premier IAS coaching programs. It offers a meticulously structured curriculum, emphasizing syllabus completion, answer writing practice, and thorough preparation for Prelims and Mains examinations.

Choosing the Right IAS Coaching Institute: Factors to Consider

From our perspective, a commendable IAS coaching institute encompasses all essential components. It should provide comprehensive study materials covering the entire syllabus, proficient teachers specializing in each subject, adequate infrastructure to facilitate engaging classroom sessions, supportive mentors available beyond class hours, and practice tests that mirror the standards of IAS examinations.

However, an exemplary IAS coaching institute goes beyond mere provision; it operates with a clear purpose.

Such an institution guides students on effective note-taking techniques and synthesis methods.

It features esteemed mentors, referred to as gurus, who offer profound insights into subjects and steer students toward their objectives.

Its infrastructure not only caters to classroom needs but also extends support to students seeking assistance outside of regular sessions.

Mentors at the forefront of top IAS coaching institutes act as beacons, illuminating the path to success.

Moreover, these institutes don't just offer quality tests but also impart strategies on how to approach them effectively, ensuring holistic preparation.

Top IAS Coaching Centers in Delhi

Delhi boasts numerous top-notch IAS coaching centers, each offering unique advantages. Among the renowned establishments are Edukemy IAS, Vajiram and Ravi, Chanakya IAS Academy, ALS IAS, and others. Selecting the right coaching center hinges on individual preferences and learning inclinations.

However, a pivotal aspect distinguishing a top IAS coaching center is the underlying philosophy it adheres to.

A robust philosophy, supported by a track record of producing successful candidates, serves as a reliable indicator of a coaching center's caliber.

One of the fundamental philosophies crucial for IAS coaching centers is prioritizing the needs of learners. A steadfast commitment to fostering both academic growth and personal development should be evident. Ideally, this mirrors the qualities expected of successful UPSC candidates.

Online vs. Offline IAS Coaching: Pros and Cons

Choosing between online and offline coaching for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) exam depends on various factors and individual preferences. Here are some pros and cons of each:

Online IAS Coaching:

  • Flexibility : Online coaching offers flexibility in terms of timing and location. You can access study materials and lectures from anywhere and at any time according to your convenience.
  • Cost-effective : Generally, online coaching is more affordable than traditional offline coaching. You can save money on commuting and accommodation expenses.
  • Wide range of options: With online coaching, you have access to a wide range of coaching institutes and study materials from across the country, allowing you to choose the one that best suits your needs.
  • Access to recorded lectures : Online platforms often provide recorded lectures, which you can watch multiple times for better understanding or revision.
  • Personalized learning : Some online coaching platforms offer personalized study plans and adaptive learning technologies that cater to individual learning styles.
  • Lack of personal interaction : Online coaching may lack the personal interaction and direct support that offline coaching provides. You may miss out on the opportunity for face-to-face interactions with teachers and peers.
  • Self-discipline required : Since there is no fixed schedule in online coaching, you need to have self-discipline to stick to your study routine and meet deadlines.
  • Technical issues : Technical problems such as internet connectivity issues or platform malfunctions can disrupt your learning experience.
  • Limited networking opportunities : Offline coaching provides opportunities for networking with peers and faculty members, which may be limited in online coaching.

Offline IAS Coaching:

  • Face-to-face interaction : Offline coaching allows for direct interaction with teachers, providing the opportunity to ask questions and clarify doubts in real-time.
  • Structured learning environment : Offline coaching provides a structured learning environment with fixed schedules and regular classes, which can help in maintaining discipline and consistency in studies.
  • Peer learning : Being part of a physical classroom allows for peer interactions and group discussions, which can enhance learning through shared experiences and perspectives.
  • Mentorship and guidance : Offline coaching institutes often provide mentorship and guidance from experienced faculty members, who can offer personalized advice and support throughout the preparation journey.
  • Networking opportunities : Offline coaching provides opportunities to build a network with peers, alumni, and faculty members, which can be beneficial for sharing resources, insights, and strategies.
  • Time and location constraints : Offline coaching requires physical presence at a specific location, which may not be feasible for everyone due to time and location constraints.
  • Higher costs : Offline coaching can be more expensive than online coaching due to additional expenses such as commuting, accommodation, and study materials.
  • Limited flexibility : Offline coaching follows a fixed schedule, which may not be suitable for those who require flexibility due to work or other commitments.
  • Quality may vary : The quality of offline coaching institutes can vary, and not all institutes may offer the same level of teaching and support.

Ultimately, the choice between online and offline coaching depends on factors such as your learning style, schedule, budget, and preferences for interaction and flexibility. It's essential to weigh the pros and cons of each option and choose the one that aligns best with your needs and circumstances.

Role of Mock Tests in IAS Coaching

Mock tests play a crucial role in IAS (Indian Administrative Service) coaching for several reasons:

  • Assessment of Knowledge : Mock tests help candidates assess their level of preparedness for the actual exam. By attempting mock tests, candidates can identify their strengths and weaknesses in different subjects/topics.
  • Familiarity with Exam Pattern : IAS mock tests are designed to mimic the actual exam pattern, including the format of questions, time duration, and marking scheme. This helps candidates become familiar with the exam pattern and reduces exam-related anxiety.
  • Time Management : Time management is critical in the IAS exam, which consists of multiple papers with a limited time frame. Mock tests help candidates practice time management strategies, such as allocating time to different sections and prioritizing questions based on difficulty level.
  • Revision and Practice : Mock tests provide an opportunity for candidates to revise the syllabus and practice answering a variety of questions. Regular practice through mock tests helps reinforce concepts and improves retention of information.
  • Identification of Weak Areas : Mock tests help candidates identify their weak areas or topics where they need to focus more attention. This enables them to tailor their study plans accordingly and allocate more time to areas that require improvement.
  • Performance Evaluation : Mock tests allow candidates to evaluate their performance objectively. They can analyze their mistakes, understand the reasons behind incorrect answers, and work on improving their problem-solving skills.
  • Real-time Feedback : Many coaching institutes provide feedback and performance analysis after each mock test, highlighting areas of improvement and suggesting strategies to enhance performance. This personalized feedback can be invaluable in guiding candidates towards success.

When considering IAS coaching, individuals often debate between personalized and group coaching approaches. Each has its advantages and can cater to different learning styles and preferences:

  • Peer Learning : Group coaching facilitates interaction with peers who share similar aspirations, creating a supportive environment for collaborative learning, knowledge sharing, and motivation.
  • Diversity of Perspectives : Interacting with a diverse group exposes aspirants to different viewpoints, approaches, and study techniques, broadening their understanding and enhancing problem-solving skills.
  • Cost-Effective : Group coaching is often more economical compared to personalized coaching, making it accessible to a wider range of aspirants who may have budget constraints.

  • Set Priorities : Identify the most important topics or subjects based on their weightage in the exam and your proficiency level. Allocate more time to these areas while ensuring you cover all subjects adequately.
  • Break Down Goals : Divide your syllabus into smaller, manageable goals. Set daily, weekly, and monthly targets to track your progress effectively.

  • Stay Healthy : Take care of your physical and mental well-being. Get adequate sleep, exercise regularly, and maintain a balanced diet. A healthy lifestyle enhances cognitive function and overall productivity.
  • Stay Flexible : While having a schedule is important, remain flexible to accommodate unexpected events or changes in your study plan. Adaptability is key to effective time management.
  • Seek Support : Don't hesitate to seek guidance from mentors, peers, or coaching instructors if you face challenges in managing your time effectively. They can offer valuable advice and support.

The Role of Current Affairs in IAS Coaching

  • Relevance to the Exam : The Civil Services Examination (CSE), which includes the IAS exam, extensively covers current affairs. Questions in the Preliminary Examination's General Studies Paper I and Paper II (CSAT), as well as in the Main Examination's General Studies Papers, often require a deep understanding of current events, both national and international.
  • Analytical Skills Development : Keeping up with current affairs enhances analytical skills as aspirants are required to understand the implications, causes, and consequences of various events and developments. This is crucial for the Mains exam, which includes essay writing, comprehension, and analysis of given topics.
  • Contextual Understanding : Many questions in the IAS exam demand an understanding of historical, social, political, and economic contexts. Current affairs provide real-life examples and case studies that can be used to illustrate points and arguments in the exam.
  • Interdisciplinary Knowledge : Current affairs cover a wide range of subjects, from science and technology to governance and international relations. Aspirants need to integrate knowledge from various disciplines to tackle questions effectively in the exam.
  • Interview Preparation : Current affairs are also important for the personality test stage of the examination. Aspirants must be well-informed about contemporary issues to express informed opinions and insights during the interview.
  • Adaptability : The nature of the Civil Services requires officers to stay updated with the latest developments and adapt to changing circumstances. Following current affairs during the preparation phase helps aspirants cultivate this habit of staying informed and adaptable.

To effectively integrate current affairs into IAS coaching, institutes typically offer daily, weekly, or monthly updates, conduct discussions and debates on relevant topics, provide study materials focusing on recent events, and incorporate current affairs into mock tests and practice sessions. Additionally, aspirants are encouraged to read newspapers, magazines, online portals, and other sources regularly to stay updated.

  • Create a Schedule : Develop a study schedule that is realistic and sustainable. Allocate specific times for studying, revision, breaks, and relaxation.
  • Find Your Why : Remind yourself why you want to become an IAS officer. Whether it's to serve the community, bring about positive change, or achieve personal fulfillment, keeping your reasons in mind can help maintain your motivation.
  • Stay Positive : Surround yourself with positivity. Avoid negative influences and self-doubt. Celebrate small victories and learn from setbacks.
  • Stay Organized : Keep your study space tidy and organized. Having a clutter-free environment can help improve focus and productivity.

  • Stay Healthy : Prioritize your physical and mental health. Eat well, exercise regularly, get enough sleep, and practice relaxation techniques such as meditation or deep breathing.

Remember, staying motivated is a journey, and it's normal to have ups and downs. Be kind to yourself, stay persistent, and keep moving forward towards your goal.

IAS Coaching: Does Brand Name Matter?

The importance of the brand name in IAS coaching can vary depending on several factors:

  • Reputation : Established coaching institutes with a strong track record of producing successful candidates may carry more weight in terms of brand name recognition. This reputation can attract students seeking assurance of quality coaching.
  • Quality of Faculty : While brand name can initially attract students, the quality of faculty members and their teaching methods ultimately determine the effectiveness of coaching. Institutes with renowned educators may naturally gain more recognition and trust, enhancing their brand value.
  • Past Results : Coaching institutes with a history of consistently producing successful candidates tend to have stronger brand names. Positive word-of-mouth and publicity surrounding past results contribute to the perception of quality associated with the brand.
  • Infrastructure and Facilities : The infrastructure and facilities offered by coaching institutes also contribute to their brand image. Modern amenities, well-equipped libraries, and conducive learning environments can enhance the perceived value of the brand.
  • Location : Institutes located in prominent educational hubs or cities with a high density of IAS aspirants may gain visibility and recognition purely based on their location, irrespective of their brand name.
  • Marketing and Publicity : Effective marketing strategies can elevate the brand name of coaching institutes. Aggressive advertising, endorsements from successful candidates, and participation in educational events can all contribute to brand visibility and reputation.

In summary, while a strong brand name can be advantageous for an IAS coaching institute, it is not the sole determinant of success. Factors such as faculty quality, past results, infrastructure, and location also play crucial roles in attracting students and delivering effective coaching. Ultimately, the effectiveness of coaching depends on the quality of education imparted and the support provided to aspirants in their preparation journey.

Is UPSC coaching necessary

Is UPSC coaching necessary to crack Civil Service Exam?

We don’t want to be diplomatic here. You will get a definite answer if you go through the entire article.

Let’s delve into this intricate debate and explore both sides of the argument.

The Case for UPSC Coaching:

  • Structured Guidance: UPSC exams encompass a vast syllabus, including subjects like history, geography, polity, economics, and about ten others. Professional UPSC coaching institutes provide a structured approach to cover this extensive content, aiding candidates in staying organized and focused.
  • Experienced Faculty: UPSC Coaching centres often employ subject-matter experts and retired civil servants who possess in-depth knowledge about the exam pattern, question trends, and effective study strategies. Their guidance can be invaluable in understanding the nuances of the examination.
  • Mock Tests and Practice: Regular mock tests and practice sessions are crucial components of UPSC preparation. UPSC Coaching institutes simulate the exam environment and provide candidates with performance evaluations, enabling them to identify strengths and areas that need improvement.
  • Peer Interaction: Joining a coaching program allows aspirants to interact with fellow UPSC candidates. Sharing ideas, discussing current affairs, and collaborative learning can foster a conducive study atmosphere and enhance knowledge retention.

The Case Against UPSC Coaching:

  • Self-Study Potential: Some successful candidates have cracked UPSC exams solely through self-study. With the abundance of resources available, including textbooks, online materials, and previous years’ question papers, determined individuals, even though exception, can devise their study plans.
  • Personalized Approach: Every aspirant’s learning style and pace vary. UPSC Coaching classes might adopt a one-size-fits-all approach, which might not cater to individual needs. Self-studying allows candidates to tailor their study techniques to suit their strengths.
  • Financial Aspect: Joining a UPSC coaching institute can be expensive, encompassing fees, accommodation, and other associated costs. For candidates with financial constraints, this could become a major hurdle.
  • Time Management: Some individuals might have prior commitments like jobs or family responsibilities, making it challenging to attend regular UPSC coaching classes. Self-study offers the flexibility to manage one’s own time.

The Middle Ground:

While the coaching vs. self-study debate rages on, there’s merit in finding a balanced approach.

In general, we can say that ‘it takes two hands to clap’.

Aspirants can consider combining the benefits of UPSC coaching with self-study. Utilize coaching to gain a strong foundation, understand exam patterns, and access expert guidance. Simultaneously, personalize your study schedule to accommodate self-study, focusing on revision, practice, and current affairs updates.

Whether coaching is necessary for UPSC preparation depends on various factors, including an individual’s learning style, resources, and circumstances.

However, aspirants should also note that no singular path can guarantee success.

What matters most is dedication, consistency, and a deep understanding of the exam’s demands.

Whether you opt for coaching or decide to tread the self-study path, remember that UPSC success is born from a combination of rigorous effort, strategic planning, and a passion for public service.

Why do sportspersons take the help of a coach?

Before answering the ‘whether coaching is necessary for UPSC’ question, let us rephrase the same question in another way.

Is coaching/guidance/practice helpful or not ?

In general, they are helpful. Aren’t they?

Now, whether coaching/guidance/practice is necessary to top a highly competitive field?

In general, an expert coach or mentor provides a great advantage over others in every competitive field like exams or sports.

Even Sachin Tendulkar had a coach. Do you remember Ramakant Achrekar who won the Dronacharya Award in 1990 and Padma Shri in 2010?

In general, coaching/guidance/practice is treated as necessary to get an edge in most competitive fields.

There can be a few exceptions for candidates who succeeded without coaching. However, those are exceptions. Exceptions cannot be generalised.

To conclude, an expert coach, guide, or mentor is a great aid to achieving more things in life!
