Anticipated Experiences During Our College Life

College Life is one of the most remarkable and lovable times of an individual's life. Unlike School Life, College Life has a different experience, and a person needs to have this experience in his/her life. College Life exposes us to whole new experiences which we always dream of experiencing after our school life. Lucky are those who get the chance to enjoy their college life, as many people don't get this chance due to their circumstances or financial issues. For every person, College Life has a different meaning. While some people spend their college life partying with friends, others become more cautious about their careers and study hard. Whatever the way, every individual enjoys their college life and always wishes to relive that time once it is over.

College Life Experience: How is it different from School Life?

Both school life and college life is the most memorable time of a person's life, but both of them are quite different from each other. While in School life, we learn everything in a protected environment, College Life exposes us to a new environment where we have to learn new things and face new challenges by ourselves. We spend half of our young lives in school, and thus we get comfortable living in that environment. But College Life is for three years only, where every year introduces new challenges and lessons to us. While in school, our teachers and friends always protect and guard us, in college life we form a relationship with our mentors, and they don't protect us all the time as our school teachers did. 

Unlike school life, we don't have many limitations in college life, and it is up to us how we want to spend our college life. In college life, we see new faces and experience a unique environment in which we have to mingle ourselves. We make new friends there who stay with us for the rest of our lives. Also, we get a chance to shape our careers asking the right decisions and studying hard. College life is not only about the study but also about the overall development of an individual through various activities and challenges.

In College Life, one gets a chance to make their own decisions. In school life, students get an opportunity to be class monitors. In College Life, an individual gets a chance to nominate himself/herself for more prominent positions like College President, Vice President, Secretary, and Vice Secretary. Apart from deciding the course and stream, an individual gets a chance to build his/her confidence by being a part of various societies and events that take place all year.

Different from School Life, College Life has its importance in a person's life, and one should always enjoy his/her college life.

A Bridge Between Our Student and Adult Lives

College life is considered a bridge in our lives between our school days and our career. It prepares us with the finest academics and platform to generate dreams into realities. It acts as a transition to prepare us to be more independent. In school, we were dependent on our parents. However, we became independent in college regarding studying, traveling, decision-making, and financially independent after college. It is a valued and very smooth transition where we do not realize that we have become independent. 

Some Fun Memories from College Life

Firstly, some of the most fun memories of college are “college canteen”. The canteen is supposed to be where most of the students satisfy their hunger and hang out with their friends. 

Secondly, it’s the “annual fest” of the colleges. Fests always filled the student’s life with excitement and buzz. It gave new opportunities to explore, compare, compete and provide a platform to showcase their talent. It became a place where students take lots of pictures and record their experiences. 

Last but not the least, it’s the college trips. One of the best things in college life is field trips where they can go out and have quality time with their friends and teacher and learning experience. Field trips or just any other college trips are filled with stories and dramas. Every student has their own story to tell about their college trips. 

We should enjoy our college days as they cannot be brought back just like our school days. 

The Hardest Part of College Life

As a college student, the hardest part of college life was leaving college after graduation or post-graduation. The last days of college were the hardest, knowing that soon you will be departing your friends, the campus, teachers and completely leaving behind a part of life.  

My College Days Experience

Talking about my college life, I had enjoyed my college life to the fullest and had some of the best college days of my life. I was a student of one of the most reputed colleges of Delhi University and, i.e. Gargi College. I have completed my B.A. (Hons.) in Applied Psychology from there. Gargi College is one of the renowned and best colleges of Delhi University. Built in a larger area, it is a beautiful college with many courses in streams like Science, Commerce, Arts, and Humanities. With an outstanding academic record, it is a girls college.

When I took admission to this college, I was really afraid as all the people were new to me. But soon, I started enjoying my college life and made some fantastic friends. I loved everything about my college and participated in the events at my college. Even I joined the dance society of my college and participated in many dance competitions that occurred in different colleges of Delhi University. 

One of the best things about college life is that you get a new experience every day. In my college life, along with studying, I and my friends enjoyed a lot of other things. We traveled to lots of places, had new experiences, and learned many new things. Our college's canteen was a remarkable place in my college life as whenever we got time, we used to chill in the canteen. 

Another thing I loved about my college life is Annual Fests. Every year, every college of Delhi University organizes an annual fest that lasts for 2-3 days. In this annual fest, various competitions happen, and students from various colleges come to be a part of this annual fest. Every year, our college organizes a massive annual fest and all the students of our college participate in various events and enjoy a lot in this fest. These fests allow students to socialize with new people and showcase their talent to everyone which builds their confidence and helps them in their future. I have participated in my college's annual fest for all three years, and I have got the best exposure and experience of my life through this fest. I had the best time of my life in college, and my college life memories will always make me happy.

Life After College

One fine day, you will be silently smiling with wet eyes, looking at the pictures from your college and old friends, and remembering all the good times you had in your college days. That is the beauty of studying in a college. Despite climbing the ladders of success, you will cherish the memories of your college life.

College Life is a remarkable and essential time in a person's life, and everyone should enjoy it. College Life teaches us many things and builds our confidence to face the challenges and struggles in our future. Instead of just focussing on the study, a person must participate in other activities and socialize as much as possible in his/her college life as all these things help in the overall development of a person.

College Life Essay

One of the most memorable periods of a person's life is often their time in college. Compared to school life, it is completely different. We are exposed to new experiences and ideas during our time in college. Our schools were a secure environment where we had spent the majority of our time growing up. The move to college is so abrupt that you are no longer shielded by your teachers and schoolmates. Some people believe that college life entails living it up to the fullest and having a fun time. Others devote more time to their studies and take their careers seriously if they want a better future. From school life, college life is a significant adjustment.

College life will present you with numerous hurdles. You must make friends in this new environment where there are many unexpected faces. It teaches us how to interact with others and establish our own opinions. Students acquire their free will in college, which helps them grow more self-assured and collected. We were always dependent on our friends or teachers while we were in school. We learn to be independent in college. It strengthens us and teaches us how to face our own challenges. It also encourages us to take our careers seriously. We make decisions that will impact our future on our own, unlike when we were in school when our parents made those decisions for us.

The college experience for me was full of ups and downs. Even though I got admission to the college of my choice, the transition came as a complete shock to me. It was my first time travelling alone every day and meeting new people. I had a difficult time making new friends and getting familiar with the new professors. The newly found independence was exhilarating though. I could go anywhere I wanted, join any social activities, and become part of different programmes. It felt like there was nothing I couldn’t do in life.

Everyone should enjoy their time in college because it is a great and important period in their lives. We learn a lot from college life, and it also gives us more self-assurance to tackle difficulties later in life. A person should focus on other hobbies and socialise as much as they can during their college years rather than just studying because all of these things aid in a person's overall development.

There are many hurdles that come with being a college student. You're currently in a really strange environment where it would be difficult for you to mix with anyone. Students discover their strengths in college and how to persevere becoming more self-assured and composed.

My College Days Experience

Speaking of my time in college, I had a great time there and experienced some of the best days of my life. I attended Jesus and Mary College, one of Delhi University's most prestigious colleges. From there, I earned my B.A. (Hons.) in Political Science. One of Delhi University's most well-known and esteemed colleges is Gargi College. It is a stunning college with various courses in fields like science, commerce, the arts, and humanities that was constructed in a greater space. It is a girls' college with a stellar academic record.

I was quite nervous when I applied to this college because I didn't know any of the other students. However, I gradually got into college life and met some great friends. I took part in college events and enjoyed everything about my college. I joined the dance and quiz society at my college and took part in a number of dance and quiz competitions held at various Delhi University campuses.

The fact that every day is different is one of the finest aspects about college life. Along with studying, my friends and I enjoyed a variety of other activities in college. We visited different locations, witnessed unique experiences, and gained a great deal of fresh knowledge. In my undergraduate years, the canteen and the common room were special spots since we would hang out there anytime we had free time. Our garden was one of the most beautiful places in our college where we spent countless hours during wintertime. Sometimes, our professors would even take our lectures there when the weather was good.

Annual Fests were another aspect of college life that I cherished. Every year, each college at Delhi University puts on a festival that lasts two to three days. Several competitions take place at this annual festival, which attracts participants from different colleges. Our college hosts a sizable yearly festival every year, in which all of the students take part in numerous competitions and have a great time.

These events give students the chance to interact with new people and demonstrate their talents in front of everyone, boosting their confidence and assisting them in the future. I have taken part in my college's yearly festival for the past three years, and during this time, I have gained the most exposure and experience of my life. I had the time of my life in college, and I will always cherish my recollections of that time.

Method of teaching in a school is vastly different from what it is in a college. A class in a school consists of a limited number of students. Every day new lessons are given to the pupils and they are compelled to prepare their classwork and home task, failing which they are sure to get punished. No one can be absent from a class without being noticed immediately. Not only in the class-room but also in other activities of the school a student’s part is defined by the teachers and he has no choice. If an imaginative lad tries to escape with his ‘Arabian Nights’ during the games period, the drill-master will have him punished or even himself pull his cars in presence of the rest.

In the college, professors scarcely know the faces and the names of their pupils nor ever care to do so. After the lectures, professors need not inquire about the progress made by the students. But it is not so easy to give one’s definite opinion as to which of these two conditions, the rigid discipline existing in schools, or the complete liberty prevalent in colleges is more desirable for a learner. In the school, a student, though shackled by the strict watch, is still free from the responsibility of improving his own mind. For, this responsibility is borne by his teachers. College students may enjoy some freedom no doubt, but that freedom is weighed down by a heavy responsibility on his shoulders. Very few students can appreciate and utilize their liberty. For the lazy, unintelligent, indifferent boys and girls this absence of restraint and direction proves to be the doom of their academic career.

In schools, much greater intimacy between the teachers and the pupils enlivens the atmosphere with a homely spirit, whereas in the college an average student completely loses his identity in a large crowd and is reduced to a mere roll number. But then, the college common room and the library offer him an ample opportunity to spend his time profitably and pleasurably which the school does not provide so liberally.

Games and sports are organized both is schools and colleges. For school children, games are more or less a spontaneous outburst of energy. In the college, a well-equipped gymnasium is maintained for students to build up their body by systematic exercises.

It is not so much before as after we have left both school life and college life far behind us, that we are in a position to appreciate fully their respective values and charms. Both our school and college have great influence in molding our life and character. Most of us are just what our alma maters have made us. The school is left behind and the college also is about to be crossed overalls. And as the memories of both will become more and more things of the past, they will appear in our vision in their real perspective – as ideal homes of joy, where so many invaluable lessons of life have been learned and precious friends made. College Is All About Curiosity. And That Requires Free Speech.

I have served happily as a professor at Yale for most of my adult life, but in my four-plus decades at the mast, I have never seen campuses roiled as they’re roiling today. On the one hand are gleeful activists on the right, taking victory laps over the tragic tumble from grace of Harvard’s president, Claudine Gay. On the other is a campus left that has spent years crafting byzantine and vague rules on hate speech that it suddenly finds turned back on its allies. For those of us who love the academy, these are unhappy times.

The controversy began with criticisms of some universities, Harvard included, for soft-pedaling their responses to the horrific Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel, and for then ignoring the overheated rhetoric of many pro-Palestinian protesters on campus. It has since spiraled into a full-bore battle in the never-ending culture wars.

There’s something sad but deeply American about the way that the current crisis stems not from the terror attacks but from a subsequent congressional hearing at which the presidents of Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology gave such cautious responses that it was hard to understand their positions. It was all very embarrassing; and, in its way, very McCarthyist.

Still, some good may yet come of the debacle. I have in mind not, as the left might think, a fresh rallying of the angry troops; nor, as the right might think, an eager readiness for the next battle. Rather, the controversy provides us with an opportunity to engage in a serious debate about what higher education is for.

The Oct. 7 attack was hardly an auspicious moment to unfurl campus demands that the world pay attention to the context underlying the vicious assault. Measured by casualties, the Hamas attack is the third-deadliest terror incident in the half century for which we have data; measured in per capita terms, it was by far the worst, with more than 1 in every 10,000 Israelis killed. I have a fair degree of sympathy — quite a lot, actually — for many aspects of decolonial theory. I have taught, for example, the works of Frantz Fanon and Talal Asad, both of whom seek, in different ways, to offer an explanation for anti-Western violence that most observers find inexplicable. I have no sympathy whatsoever for the intentional targeting of children and the weaponization of sexual violence. Drawing a distinction between civilian and military targets might benefit the more powerful side, but the distinction is nonetheless correct.

In the wake of so traumatizing and polarizing an episode, to say nothing of its aftermath, students of different ideological persuasions will nevertheless behave like the rest of us, selecting facts from sources that share their predilections. This behavior is intellectually inside-out. A goal of higher education must be to train our students (and often ourselves) away from re-enacting endlessly the famous 1954 experiment by Albert H. Hastorf and Hadley Cantril, in which students at Dartmouth and Princeton watched a film of a penalty-ridden football game between the two schools. When questioned about what they witnessed, each side’s partisans saw mainly the fouls committed by their opponents.

In short, they found only what they were looking for.

The university classroom is the place to press students to look for more.

The classroom is said to be an outdated technology: A teacher stands up front explaining a subject as students take notes. Future-minded critics insist that the model is near its inevitable end. The Covid-19 shutdowns accelerated the drive to develop better tools for asynchronous learning. The rise of generative A.I., together with the mutually parasitic relationship between young people and their screens, suggests that the old way is nearly done.

Here I am moved to argue for the defense. These dire predictions might fall into line with what’s happening on campus, but what universities are becoming bears little relation to what the classroom should be. The difficulty stems, as my Yale Law School colleague Anthony Kronman has accurately noted, from the yielding of universities to the “vocational ideal,” the notion that what’s most important in life is work (together with the wallet), and concomitantly that the purpose of higher education is to inculcate the skills needed to excel in the labor market. In short, college as a path to a better job and a higher income.

If that’s how the mavens of higher education see their institutions, they will deservedly lose the battle over how students are taught. For if the purpose of the university classroom is simply to impart information, digital agents will soon perform the task better than experienced teachers, and colleges will find themselves unnecessary, merely duplicative of what students can get at home, cheaply and efficiently.

But this stumble toward redundancy rests upon a fatal misunderstanding of why the classroom exists. Teaching a subject is important; it is also in a sense incidental. The classroom is, first and foremost, a place to train young minds toward a yearning for knowledge and a taste for argument — to be intellectually curious — even if what they wind up discovering challenges their most cherished convictions. If the behavioral economist George Loewenstein is right that curiosity is a result of an “information gap” — a desire to know more than we do — then the most vital tasks of higher education are to help students realize that the gap always exists and to stoke their desire to bridge it.

Impediments to free speech are impediments to free thought and can only interfere with that search. That’s why academic freedom is so precious.

The lineage of academic freedom can be traced back at least to the 15th century, but historians tell us that the modern conception comes largely from the German universities of the 19th century. As the physicist and philosopher Hermann von Helmholtz put the point in 1869, scholars must be “more fearless of the consequences of the whole truth than any other people.” In a world where so many “other people” are on the lookout for wrongthink, the ability to pursue truth becomes more precious still.

A 1938 essay in Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science described academic freedom as the professor’s “special need of elbowroom in his work”; with apologies to Virginia Woolf, we might call it the need for elbowroom of one’s own. The image is one of adequate space to do your work, secure in the knowledge that nobody is looking over your shoulder to enforce ideological conformity. For the university to do its job of inculcating curiosity, academic freedom should be a near-absolute, within the classroom as well as without. College administrators who believe otherwise shouldn’t be college administrators.

In her fine book “Curiosity: A Cultural History of Early Modern Inquiry,” Barbara M. Benedict shows how this quality that we nowadays consider a virtue was in the past often regarded as a dangerous disruption of the social order. The view on campus today is often much the same, with scholarly work guided along particular ideological paths, and with those who transgress often marked down as unpersons. What the essayist and literary critic George Steiner derided half a century ago as a “nostalgia for the absolute” is these days everyday academic life.

What made the congressional hearing so sad was not merely the accusatory quality of the committee’s questions, or even the evasive quality of the presidents’ answers. It was that the presidents were being asked to interpret their own rules on campus speech — and couldn’t.

They’re not alone. Existing campus speech rules have led to all sorts of horror stories. Many are true. Because the regulations tend to be standardless — often, deciding what’s hateful based on the response of the listener, a so-called “heckler’s veto” — they give no fair warning of what’s forbidden, leading to such absurdities as stopping a student from passing out copies of the Constitution on Constitution Day; or investigating a professor for the sin of stopping to watch a “Back the Blue” rally; or rebuking an untenured lecturer who in a discussion about race showed a documentary that included graphic images of lynching, and read aloud from the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” Evidently the film, like the letter, included what we’re now supposed to call the N-word. (Full disclosure: I’ve used the word often in my books — fiction and nonfiction alike — and, seemingly only yesterday, I used it in the pages of The Times.)

But even were the rules crystal clear, they’d have both students and faculty looking over their shoulders, wondering which of their ideas might bring forth not disagreement — the mother’s milk of academic life — but condemnation from their fellows and, most dreaded of all, investigation. The inculcation of fear as part of daily work on campus is very McCarthyist; more McCarthyist, even, than hauling college presidents before Congress to try to force them to place even more speech off limits. Because having to look over your shoulder is something you contend with every day.

Many investigations and rules are justified on the grounds of ensuring that students feel safe. But I’m not at all sure the college classroom should be a place of comfort. It should be a place, rather, where students regularly face the challenge of difficult questions, as their professors help prepare them for the life of the mind. The more successful the teaching, the more students will carry their taste for the give-and-take of argument out of the classroom and into the larger world.

This is why those who insist that pro-Palestinian protesters be punished for their views have matters inside-out: What campuses need is less regulation of speech, not more.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the “free speech” movement that began among students at the University of California, Berkeley, and spread swiftly across the country. The anniversary is a reminder of a sort that students, too, are entitled to academic freedom — and I don’t just mean the freedom to protest, cherished as that right may be. What’s far more important is the freedom of students to grow into distinct thinking individuals. The student must be, in the phrasing of the German philosopher Friedrich Paulsen, “free to devote himself wholly to his task of forming himself into an independent personality.”

I agree with the philosopher Seana Valentine Shiffrin that when we search for the justifications for free speech, we tend to overlook its value in crafting our own identities, the way that a self can try on ideas like clothes, to discover which fit best. Sometimes the ideas will be beautiful; sometimes they’ll be ugly; sometimes they’ll look better on one person than another.

This process of testing ideas should be encouraged, particularly among the young. But it carries risks, not least because of what we might call influencers, who wind up dictating which ideas it’s fashionable to wear and which should be tossed out. When large majorities of college students report pressure to self-censor, this is what they’re talking about. Surveys suggest that the principal reason students keep controversial ideas to themselves is to avoid the disdain not of their professors but of their peers.

That is unfortunate, not least because it tells us how badly the educational process has failed.

The strength of my commitment to free inquiry and free speech might be traceable in part to an adolescence spent in mostly white schools, full of students and teachers alike who sought to tell me what I should think and say. I didn’t like it then; I don’t like it now. My father used to say that from the time I was a toddler, all I seemed to do was ask questions. Yet a chunk of my formative years was spent among peers who thought answers were obvious and questions were in poor taste. As it happened, the views they pressed upon me were mostly conservative; but I didn’t fight them off so that I might later subject myself to the same condescending nonsense from progressives.

I was probably attracted to academic life because I believed I had found in it the antithesis of that attitude. But then I was fortunate enough to come along at a time when campuses, still embarrassed by their feckless surrender to the McCarthyist right in the 1950s, had developed a broad and rich tolerance for uncomfortable speech.

My undergraduate education at Stanford in the 1970s was full of serious argument over controversial propositions. Little was out of bounds. In my history courses, we eagerly debated such subjects as whether slavery was more efficient than wage labor, or whether the influence of Christian missionaries on Asia and Africa and Latin America had been a net negative or net positive. When the great Carl Degler solemnly told a lecture class that slavery in Brazil had been harsher than slavery in the United States, nobody got mad, nobody circulated an outraged petition; instead, a group of Black students, myself among them, went to the lectern afterward to question, argue and learn.

Few professors tried to foist their own views on students. I thoroughly enjoyed a philosophy-of-religion seminar where the professor, an adamant atheist, took obvious glee in slapping down student arguments against the existence of God; and a political science course in which the professor was unapologetic in his view that Brown v. Board of Education was wrongly decided. Nobody boycotted him; in fact, his classes were hugely popular, even though his use of the Socratic method, for most of us our first exposure, had us trembling. Yet arguing with him over fine points of constitutional law not only improved my ability to defend my positions; it also helped establish my love of argument, of studying the evidence and listening with care.

Perhaps the high-water mark of my tiny corner of the Golden Age was my brief encounter with William Shockley, a brilliant engineer who shared the Nobel Prize in Physics as an inventor of the transistor, a device whose descendants we use every time we start our cars, fire up our laptops or pick up our phones. By the time he crossed my path, Shockley had become notorious for his avowed certainty that racial differences in I.Q. were driven principally by genetics — and for his proposal that we could increase national intelligence by paying those with low I.Q. scores not to reproduce.

Student protesters argued that Shockley shouldn’t be allowed to teach; on more than one occasion, they disrupted his classes. But I didn’t want to see him punished. I wanted to see him refuted.

As it happened, I worked at The Stanford Daily, which sponsored regular lunches at which a faculty member would be peppered with questions. During my sophomore year, The Daily invited Shockley, who much to our surprise agreed to participate. I spent weeks before his appearance haunting the campus libraries, reading every article I could find on the relationship among race, genetics and I.Q. — and learning a lot along the way about a subject into which I otherwise might never have delved. (Again, curiosity had its innings.)

On the appointed day, Shockley showed up, bringing along a tape recorder. He gave his talk (which I didn’t find impressive) and then answered questions in his polite, but firm way. After all these decades I don’t remember what I asked, except that it was long and complicated and well rehearsed, and that it was related to potential weaknesses in a particular study he kept citing; what I remember instead is the way his eyes narrowed as he listened. “That’s rather clever,” he said when I was done. I like to think that I put him off his game a bit; but, in truth, I doubt it.

That same year Shockley appeared on a campus stage, debating the issue of I.Q. and inheritance with Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza, one of the world’s great geneticists. Cavalli-Sforza made mincemeat of Shockley’s arguments — which is the way that academic disagreements should be decided. It’s a tragedy that subsequent debates at Harvard (1973) and Yale (1974) were canceled because of student protests. The more exposure Shockley got, the weaker his claims appeared.

This, I thought then and think now — this is how one lives the life of the mind! No, not everyone on campus need see things this way; but no one should interfere with those who do.

What should happen to those who do interfere? Yale suspended a dozen students from among those who, in the words of the physicist’s biographer, “jeered and booed for more than an hour until Shockley finally left the stage.” President Kingman Brewster Jr. accused them publicly of “storm trooper tactics.” Well, maybe; or maybe they were passionate about their cause and, in their passion, went too far. I quite agree that schools should punish those who disrupt the educational process, no matter how noble-sounding their reasons. Interrupting classes, making noise so that others can’t hear speakers, blocking access, taking over buildings — all of these are less acts of dissent than assertions of raw power.

The commitment to curiosity includes a commitment to understanding why those whose views are objectionable think as they do. The sharp line between propounding a position and trying to suppress dissenting voices is one that the campus should always honor.

I find something admirable in protesters who willingly suffer punishment for their actions rather than disrupting the academic enterprise and expecting (even demanding) no consequences. A student who takes an ugly position should be tolerated. A student who tries to prevent someone else’s ugly position from being heard should be suspended.

Stanford could have taken action against Shockley on other grounds, entirely consistent with academic freedom. He was accused of telling a Nigerian graduate student in a quantum-mechanics seminar that he did not belong in the class because of his race and should consider merely auditing the course. That act of singling out an individual illustrates how weakly the famous physicist understood statistics; it also constitutes a form of discrimination that a university can regulate without violating academic freedom, for Shockley was evaluating not the abilities of the student as an individual but the abilities of the student as representative of a class. But in the end Stanford took no action. (The student in question subsequently earned a physics Ph.D.)

If telling students and faculty what they must not say is bad, telling them what they must say is often worse. The success of the university, Paulsen wrote, rests upon the notion “that truth is the sole aim and not the proof of officially prescribed and quasi-officially desired or at least permitted views.” During the second Red Scare, which began after World War II, the most significant threat to this view was the loyalty oath. Faculty members across the country were asked to swear allegiance to the United States and, often, to affirm that they were not and had never been Communists. Many who refused lost their jobs — including at the nation’s wealthiest and most powerful institutions.

Nowadays, I worry that we’re repeating the same mischief, with mandated (or strongly encouraged) “diversity statements” and the like. I’m often told that because I obviously agree with the goals the statements promote, I shouldn’t make a big deal out of them. But this objection misses the point. The “what’s the big deal?” approach puts me in mind of the philosopher Sidney Hook, who in a 1953 essay in The Times argued that an academic who refused to swear to not being a member of the Communist Party was like a chef who refused to say whether he was the one who poisoned the food. Not for a moment did Hook entertain the notion that the hypothetical professor might simply believe, as a matter of principle, that it is wrong to screen the professorate for ideological conformity.

It was wrong then; it is wrong now.

Don’t mistake me. I’m not against ideology and social movements, except when they interfere with academic curiosity. On campus, at least, you should be able to support Israel in the Gaza War, yet feel free to argue that the Israelis have prosecuted the conflict too aggressively; or to support the aspirations of the Palestinians, yet be willing to condemn unequivocally Oct. 7.

This understanding points toward the proper resolution of other campus conflicts as well. Consider, for instance, the recent controversy at the University of California, Berkeley, law school over student organizations that require invited speakers to be “anti-Zionist,” an explicit ideological screen. The answer is not to argue over whether such demands violate school rules, but to emphasize the ways in which such restrictions violate the norms of curiosity and engagement that lie at the heart of higher education. Hanging out only with those they already agree with is one of the worst ways for young people to waste their years on campus.

Should the scope of campus debate be unlimited? Of course not. There will of necessity always be a palisade marking the boundary line of civilized conversation, and some opinions will always rest in the wilderness beyond freedom’s protection. Most obviously, calls for violence based on racial or other differences rest in that wilderness, and need not be tolerated in the classroom. Neither should playing Shockley’s game, judging intellectual ability according to the color of a student’s skin. But the force that exiled these topics from serious discussion was history, not top-down ordering. If we believe in the values of the academy, then the wilderness must be small, and the palisade in the far distance, scarcely visible to the unaided eye.

All of which brings us back to the tragedy of Claudine Gay. One way to look at the question she had such trouble answering was whether the universe of rational discourse — the space education properly occupies — is broad enough to accommodate demands for genocide. Of course, the only reasonable answer is no, and that is what the presidents should have said, clearly and concisely. Yet I think I know what they were worried about. On today’s campuses, the word “genocide” is tossed about frequently by activists, to describe what might better be called “sharp disagreement.” Part of the responsibility of the classroom teacher is to guide debate away from apocalyptic terminology, in the hope that students, rather than reaching for the language of horror, will seek to engage their opponents — that they’ll be more curious.

I’ve argued elsewhere that each generation should be permitted to place, at most, one issue beyond the fence. I believe it still. But that exclusion should follow, not precede, the waves of social change. Especially today, as the world teems with ferment, as every activist left or right pushes to move this issue or that outside the universe of rational discourse, the academy must be the last to yield.

Your catch-phrase or your opening line is one of the most crucial part of your speech because it could either catch the attention of your audience or make their heads turn around (or roll their eyes or make them not want to listen at all). 3. Pause or Pausing

Let us all go back to the catch-phrase, “s ex ” — after the speaker said this, there was a few seconds of pause to let the audience process the word or to at least let them think again about the said line. “ And that ladies and gentlemen got your attention ” as the speaker continues.

Always remember when to pause. Do not pause for a very long time and do not pause in between the intensity of your speech as this is the part where they would actually want to listen and you don’t want to lose their attention. Also, do not pause in the part that where you will be finishing your speech as the listeners would want to hear the conclusion of it.

4. Intonation

Intonation is what we call the rise and fall of the voice when speaking and this is the part where you could put emphasis or emotions to words. Take time to practice when to raise your voice and when to put emphasis. Another trick would be raising your voice when you think and feel that your audience is losing contact.

Good intonation would actually help you and your audience to focus on your speech. Good intonation would include putting emphasis in the right “yous” in the speech. For example when Ashley Graham gave a speech to Glamour’s International Day of the Girl, she tackled the importance of knowing the beauty beyond size. She also had said in her speech, “ YOU is fine ” and was going on with the speech emphasizing the word “you”. “ You is fine ” is short but effective.

5. Hand Gesture

When your voice is rising and falling every now and then, why not add some actions and do some hand gesture? Hand gesture is a good way of showing your audience that this speech is not a joke and you want your audience to listen and look at you, and even take down notes. In relation to intonation, you could use hand gestures like pointing to the audience when saying “you!” to be more convincing. You can also use hand gestures like showing your three fingers while saying “take note of this 3 points, first…” while also snapping the fingers once in awhile just to keep the crowd awake.

The tricky part of hand gesture is sometimes using it in a wrong way. Some hand gestures can be offensive and the best way to avoid it is always know your crowd. Know that with the right amount of hand movement, you can hide the shaking of your hands from the audience.

6. Body Posture

Slouching is the one of the many bad habits we can’t just get rid off but slouching isn’t something you would do when reciting a speech. The moment you decided to slouch is the moment you are giving your audience a chance to think that you are no longer in control.

A good body posture indicates professionalism and in giving speech, you want to show your audience a high level of professionalism.

7. Structure

A good speech comes from a good structure. Structure includes the connection or the relation of the different parts or aspects of something complex. You must create a structure for your speech and surely, the rest would follow. Structure would cover your opening line, your topic, the body of the speech , conclusion and closing remarks. A structure could also serve as an outline for your speech since this is where you try to connect everything at once. You also need to look at the transition as your structure must include when and how to transition the speech from A to Z.

8. Right Location

When you are too nervous or lost, finding a right location in the classroom or stage would help. Look for a spot where the audience could see you and where you can see everyone in the audience. Also, find a spot where you could easily do a hand gesture free of objects, decorations and other display materials.

  • The Means of Social Media. This is an easy topic since almost everyone is on social media. This is like an every dose for college student — a means of escape. You can actually start your speech by taking a selfie and posting it online then announcing “ I just posted a selfie on Facebook but what difference does it make? ” This topic is very much relatable to the younger generation who are more adept and exposed to social media.

Follow each step to get a clear idea of what to say about every aspect of your college life in English.

Let’s start by looking at all the places and buildings that you might find in an average university college campus.

Some of these places are near identical around the world — whereas some places may exist in one country, but not in another.

College, School or University?

First of all, what do we call it? There seem to be different names for each country. A good idea is to define our terms.

The dictionary describes it as thus; an educational place to assist students to learn about a wide range of degrees via various faculties and employing different colleges and institutions.

In plain English, it means that a university offers many different courses to students. It is not one style of learning — there is often a big difference in the classes available.

A university is often quite big and could have thousands of students. And for all the courses available, the university has different faculties — these are like different departments for each area of study. And there could be different colleges within the university.

Universities these days can be private or public (government).

Many students shorten the word university to ‘uni’.

Expressions in English:

  • I am a student at Crawford University
  • I am a full-time uni student
  • I am at university — I’m studying economics

This is an educational institution that specialises in one subject or area of study.

So you could have an art college or a music college. But it could be any subject from agriculture to English literature.

Colleges are often smaller than a university and as such will have fewer students.

Colleges can also be private or public.

In America, many students refer to their university as college. This does not mean that it is a college, it is just a manner of speaking in America.

  • I am in my first year at college
  • I like going to college so far
  • I am having a great time at college

In America, any place of learning is a school. So if you are studying in America, you might hear students talk about going to school when they really mean university or college.

Confused yet?

  • I have just started school in Layfield
  • I am in my third year of school

The University or College Campus

The campus refers to all the grounds of the university or college.

There is usually a perimeter wall or fence to indicate where the campus boundaries are. Anything inside this wall is referred to as ‘the campus’.

The campus can refer to the actual grounds of the university but also all the buildings — lecture halls, library, canteen, sports grounds and student dormitories.

Some campuses can be very beautiful. If you are lucky, you might be a student at a campus with beautiful lawns and trees and plants. Many colleges and universities have these kinds of campuses. They want the environment to be perfect for studying.

There are many different buildings and facilities on a university campus.

These could include:

  • Lecture Halls
  • Library or Libraries
  • Canteen, Cafes or Restaurants
  • Coffee Shop
  • Any sports facilities

Depending on which country you are in, there may be more or fewer facilities and buildings than in the above list. For example, most Asian countries would probably not have a bar on the campus — whereas in many western countries this is most definitely certain.

Lecture Hall

Can’t have a university without any lecture halls.

This is the place where the lectures take place. Some lecture halls can be very big and have seating for hundreds of students. While others may only allow for around 100 students.

Most lecture halls have a podium — this is where the professor or teacher stands to deliver his talk.

And there may also be a screen to show pictures or videos as part of the professor’s talk.

  • We have to go to the lecture hall every Monday morning for a class on law
  • The lecture hall is very big so I try to get a seat at the front to hear the professor talking clearly
  • Our lecture hall is state-of-the-art — it has very modern equipment

The university will also have smaller rooms for smaller classes.

These are for the more specific classes on subjects. These rooms are very similar to any classroom you may find in a school, except they may have more advanced equipment for science purposes.

  • Our college has so many classrooms
  • The classrooms in our college are spread out all over the campus
  • Sometimes it makes me late for class as I go from one to the other

Seminar Room

Your university may also have rooms for seminars. These are for discussions and debates on a special subject. Students may have to actively deliver a short lecture of their own in these classes.

  • I have to attend a class in the seminar room on the east wing of the college

Where Students Live

The students have to live somewhere. And there can be a broad range of accommodation for students. Some of it provided by the university — but much of this accommodation is off-campus and privately owned.

Dormitories are the big buildings on campus where students live. There could be four students to a room in bunk beds — or they may be a private room where only one student stays.

Usually, there are shared bathrooms and kitchens in the dormitories.

Students are expected to consider other students and not have late-night parties — but in western countries they often do!

People often abbreviate the word to ‘dorm’.

  • I’m a freshman, so I sleep in the dormitory on campus. It’s okay, but next year I will find a room in a house.
  • There are four of us in one room in our dormitory. I don’t mind it but I don’t have any privacy.
  • There is a curfew in our dormitory — we have to be inside before ten at night or they lock the door.

College Digs / Student Digs

Digs is an old-fashioned term, which means residence or rooms.

Digs are usually cheap and very basic. They are usually privately owned by a landlord who specialises in student accommodation.

A typical student digs in the UK, for example, could be four bedrooms, a kitchen and a bathroom. The students living in this kind of place may know each other — or not.

Quite often there are arguments over students taking other students food from the fridge!

  • I share a house with three other students. We are all friends, so it’s a good arrangement.
  • I live with three other students from my college. The house is not great, but it’s all right for a student place.
  • I live in a house where I rent a room from the landlord. She lives in the same house. But she is very reasonable, and it’s quiet so I can study no problem.

Halls of Residence

This is a British-English term — it means dormitory.

The buildings and style are the same as a dormitory.

  • We have parties in our halls of residence most weekends. Things get pretty crazy at night too.
  • It’s great living in the halls of residence. All my friends are there, so I never feel lonely.

A homestay is usually for international students. They are designed to help the international student integrate into the culture of the country they are studying in.

A homestay is often a house with a typical family living inside.

  • I am staying with a local family. They all speak English in their house, so my English is getting better and better each day.
  • I live with a local family — the two parents and their children. I hang out with their son a lot and he has introduced me to some cool things in the area.

The Years of College

University courses can be three or four years in duration depending on which country you are studying in and what kind of course you are doing.

In America, they refer to each of the four years of study as freshman, sophomore, junior and senior.

In the UK and Australia, they just say first year, second year, third year and fourth year.

Freshman/1st Year

  • I have done almost no work in my first year. All I have done is made friends and gone to parties!
  • As I am a freshman, I don’t really have many lectures or classes. I guess that will start next year.

Sophomore/2nd Year

  • I have a lot more work to do now that I am a sophomore. I also have a lot of exams, which came as a shock after being a freshman.
  • In my second year, I now have to go to more classes. I have to be more responsible.

Junior/3rd Year

  • I am so busy now. Since being a junior, I never seem to have any free time.
  • I have to complete lots of projects. I am in different groups for all my classes, so I have to help them out as well as do all my own work.

Senior/4th Year

  • I am coming up to my finals, and then I will graduate. My senior year has been really flat out.
  • (flat out — very busy)
  • No one seems to have time to do anything else but study these days. We are all in our fourth year and it’s all go.
  • (all go — constantly busy, no time for any rest)

Times of Study

Each year of study is divided into one academic year — usually from September to June.

Most countries divide the academic year into two halves known as semesters.

In the UK, the academic year is divided into three parts known as terms.

  • This term I have to do a group project on local history. We have four more weeks, then we have to present our work in a seminar.
  • I am so broke as we are in the third term of the year — all the money has run out!

  • This semester I have quite a lot of exams to do.
  • This semester I ran into some trouble in one of my classes, but my academic adviser gave me some help.

Academic Year

  • I get almost enough money from my student loan and a bursary to last me for one academic year.
  • When I finish my academic year, I will get a summer job to get some money in.
  • We have to study for many credits every academic year.

Credits for Semester

  • I have to study for five more credits this semester, and I only have a short time to do it in!
  • My professor advised me to take fifteen credits this semester.
  • I have to complete three more credits for my English major.

Modules for Term

  • I have two modules left to do this term.
  • I am doing a module on finance this term.

  • My curriculum for economics is so busy this year.
  • I have so many classes on my curriculum.
  • My timetable in my first year was so easy — but this year it is hell!
  • (hell — bad or much worse than before)
  • My timetable has a lecture three times a week.
  • My schedule is pretty good — I don’t have too many exams this semester

Major and Minor

A major is the primary course that you spend most of your time studying. This is the one that you focus on.

A minor is the secondary course that you study. This one takes up less of your time.

In American colleges, a major requires 20 credits — while a minor only requires 10 credits.

In UK colleges, they have a combined degree system for students studying two different subjects. These are usually split into modules.

  • My major is maths
  • I am studying for a major in industrial design
  • My minor is business
  • My major is English but I am doing a minor in cultural studies
  • I am studying for a minor in French

The People in College

  • The great thing about college is that all the students are the same age, so we can make a lot of friends
  • I am in my final year at uni, and I have enjoyed being a student, but it is time to join the real world now and get a job
  • People think students just get up at two in the afternoon, go to one lecture a week and have an easy life — nothing could be further from the truth!
  • We have some really great teachers in our college — they are very helpful and give us a lot of advice
  • One of my teachers told me I had to retake a module — I was so upset about it
  • (retake — to do again)
  • My physics teacher helped me after class as I was having trouble with some theory
  • There’s a lecturer at my uni who always does these great presentations. It’s like he is telling us a story.
  • One of the lecturers in our college has a very strict ‘no phones’ policy in his lectures. If anyone’s phone goes off while he is talking, he fines the student responsible.
  • My English professor always has time to help me after class
  • I had to have a meeting with my economics professor about some a module I had missed

Principal/Dean

  • At the beginning of every academic year, the principal makes a speech to all the students
  • I know who the college dean is, but I have never spoken to him personally

Academic Adviser

  • I have to meet up with my academic adviser at least once a term so she can see how I am doing at college
  • My academic adviser always gives me a lot of encouragement

Paying for College

Going to college costs money. There are fees to pay, books to buy, and living costs to think of like rent and food.

Where does the money come from?

Being a student can often be three or four years of financial struggle. And they have to find any financial support they can.

Student Fees

These are the fees that students must pay at the beginning of the academic year. The fees cover the cost of the use of all the college and campus facilities plus attending classes and lectures.

  • The fees this year have gone up quite a lot. I have no choice, I have to pay for them.
  • I get some help from my parents to pay my college fees, but I also have to take out a student loan.

International Fees

For students from other countries, they have to pay international fees. These are a lot higher than the normal student fees.

  • As I am a student from China, I have to pay international fees. I have the same classes as the local students, but I must pay three times the costs. It’s not fair!
  • I have to pay international fees and I cannot get a student loan as I am not from this country. My parents help me pay for everything.

Sometimes the student might be eligible for a bursary. This is some money that the college or another educational body hands out to students in need.

  • My parents couldn’t pay all my fees, so I received a college bursary
  • I found out I could receive a bursary because of my dyslexia

Student Loan

This is how most students pay for college. They borrow the money. Then when they graduate, they have to make a plan to pay it all back. In America, this can be a lot of money.

  • After I graduate, I will have to start paying back my student loans
  • I had to take out many student loans to get through university

Student Grant

Some countries still give students educational grants. This is an amount of money to help through university or college.

  • I get a student grant which comes in really handy
  • (to come in really handy — to be of great help)
  • If I didn’t get a student grant, I would not be able to go to uni at all

In some cases, the student might be able to get a bank overdraft. The bank will always demand that this is paid back in full once the student graduates though.

  • I got an overdraft from the bank but I have to pay extortionate fees for it
  • (extortionate fees — very high-interest rates)

Best Years of My Life!

Many students — or ex-students — talk about their college days being the best days of their life.

This is because college is usually a great time for them. They are in an environment where they are studying with many other people the same age as them, and they don’t yet have any of the stress of working full time.

This is just a simple introduction to university or college in English. Hopefully, some of the phrases are useful to you.

If you are a graduate, these phrases may be useful to you if you ever have to talk about your university days.

For Higher Education

2023 Commencement Address

The following is adapted from a speech delivered on May 13, 2023, at Hillsdale College’s 171st Commencement Ceremony.

Congratulations to the Hillsdale College Class of 2023. It is a thrill to be here at Hillsdale, which I have heard about for a long time. Last night I had a wonderful tour of campus, and the evening culminated in a concert in your beautiful chapel. The concert included Mahler’s First Symphony played by the student orchestra and was just marvelous.

When I was a theology professor, I taught a course on the Reformation for many years, taking seriously the works of Luther and Calvin and other reformers. I believe the questions the reformers raise, questions that still divide the churches, are important. But right now, all of us who believe in God and are disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ have a common enemy in the agnosticism, atheism, and nihilism that are deeply affecting our culture and especially the minds of young people. I believe it is important for us to join together in common cause against this common enemy. And it is in that spirit that I come before you today.

It is to the permanent honor of this college that it was founded, almost 180 years ago, by Free Will Baptists who were committed to the abolition of slavery. Hillsdale’s founders were on the right side of the most compelling moral debate of the nineteenth century—and it is worth remarking that the leadership of this college today finds itself on the right side of the most pressing ethical argument of our time—namely, the protection of the unborn.

Frederick Douglass, a former slave who became one of the most eloquent advocates for abolition in the nineteenth century, spoke here in 1863, just after the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation. In the course of his lecture, “Popular Error and Unpopular Truth,” he remarked, “There is no such thing as new truth; error might be old or new, but truth is as old as the universe.” At the heart of the Hillsdale College curriculum is a presentation of these truths—epistemic, moral, and aesthetic—that are indeed as old as the universe, permanent things that participate in the eternity of God.

What I should like to do briefly in this commencement address is examine just one of these truths, which is articulated over and again in the great Western intellectual tradition. It is typically accessed by means of a question—not the question of what we are to do, as important as that is, but rather what kind of person we ought to be. Do we hunger and thirst for righteousness? Or do we seek our own advantage? In a way, there is no question in the moral and spiritual order more fundamental than that.

A locus classicus for studying this question is found in Plato’s Gorgias . In this dialogue, the character Gorgias is a sophist—which is to say, an expert in teaching the art of persuasive speech. Polus and Callicles are his students. Their concern is not being truthful or just but rather speaking in such a way that they appear truthful or just and hence become convincing to others. Such sophists were, obviously enough, enormously useful to prospective lawyers and politicians in ancient Greece, and it should be equally obvious that their intellectual descendants are rather thick on the ground today.

Socrates counters Gorgias and his students along these lines: if a rhetorician teaches a politician to do what is unjust, he does that man and his city far more harm than good. To this, Polus answers by means of a taunt: wouldn’t Socrates leap at the opportunity of having the power of life and death over others? No, Socrates says in response, for to put someone to death unjustly is in fact no power at all. And it is at this point that Socrates enunciates one of his most enduring teachings, a teaching that represents a watershed in the moral consciousness of the West: it is better, he says, to suffer wrongdoing than to do wrong oneself.

At this point, Callicles can no longer restrain himself. Giving clear voice to a position that endures to the present day, he says that what Socrates is calling “justice” is nothing but the constraints placed on the few strong by the many weak. It is a sort of guilt-trip imposed by the powerless to limit the capacity of the powerful to get what they want. If you notice a tight connection between this point of view and the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche, you are not wrong. Socrates’ argument for his position is simple: surely suffering injustice is terrible, but what is worse is the corrosion of soul that takes place when one commits injustice. In other words, being unjust is far more damaging to the moral structure of a person’s character than enduring the slings and arrows of injustice.

So there’s the question, young graduates. What kind of soul will you have? What kind of person will you be? Will you do whatever it takes to get what you want? Or will you accept even great suffering in order to do what is right? Everything else in your life will flow from your answer to that question.

I know that Hillsdale College is committed to the study of the Greco-Roman intellectual tradition, and it is for this reason that I commenced with Plato. But Hillsdale is also, and above all, committed to the Scriptures. The Bible gets at this very same issue, not so much through philosophical argumentation, but through the prophetic language of idolatry and right worship.

For the biblical authors, it is never a question of “religion” vs. “secularism.” First of all, they were not trading in what we call religion, and secondly, they knew that there really is no pure secularism. Rather, they understood that the world is basically divided between those who worship the one true God and those who indulge in idolatry or false worship. Even in our supposedly secular society, we can appreciate the appropriateness of the biblical terminology, for everyone, even the most un-churched, operates under the aegis of something he or she considers supreme, a summum bonum or highest good. No one would get out of bed in the morning unless he believed in some value that is ultimately motivating his actions and decisions. This might be bodily pleasure or fame or material goods, or it might be one’s country or family, but if it is functioning as the prime mover of a person’s activity, it is playing the role of a god and it is being, in effect, worshiped.

So the biblical form of the question we have been considering is: whom or what do you worship? Again, everything in your life will flow from your answer.

There are numberless biblical texts that are relevant to this question, but I should like to look at a particularly clarifying and dramatic one—namely, the scene described in the First Book of Kings regarding Elijah and the priests of Baal.

We recall the setting. Elijah had called out King Ahab for his worship of the false gods proposed by his wife Jezebel. He subsequently challenged the avatars of these deities to a kind of duel on Mount Carmel. Standing alone against the 450 devotees of Baal, Elijah proposed that he and they should erect altars to their respective deities and see who would respond. All morning long, the priests cried out, “Oh Baal, answer us!” But, the Bible says, “there was no voice, and no answer.”

At this point, Elijah mocked them: “Cry aloud! Surely he is a god; either he is meditating, or he has wandered away, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.” In their frenzy and frustration, the priests of Baal proceeded to “cut themselves with swords and lances until the blood gushed out over them,” but it was to no avail. Then, of course, Elijah calls out to the Lord and the fire falls, consuming the sacrifice and vindicating the prophet.

What I would like to emphasize is that this is much more than a jingoistic story of “My God is bigger than your god.” In point of fact, it is an incomparably rich presentation of the dynamics of true and false worship. The altar erected to Baal should be taken as standing for all the ways in which we order the infinite longing of our hearts to something less than God. When we do this, the fire never falls, because merely worldly things cannot, even in principle, satisfy our hungry souls. And when we persist in worshiping falsely, we find ourselves, in short order, caught in an addictive pattern, hopping obsessively, as it were, around the altar of pleasure, power, or fame, desperately seeking a satisfaction that will never come.

The self-harm inflicted by the hapless priests of Baal speaks eloquently to the self-destructive quality to which any addict can attest. Only when the fondest desire of our soul is directed to the infinite God will the fire fall and addiction be avoided. So once again, young graduates, the question is simple: at which altar will you worship? Your whole life will unfold, for weal or for woe, from that decision.

If we would like to see the place where Plato and Elijah come together, we need look no further than the cross of Jesus, which St. Paul described as a divine weakness stronger than human strength and a divine folly wiser than human wisdom. Where could we find a clearer instantiation of the principle that it is better to suffer injustice than to commit it than in Jesus crucified? Sinless, blameless, he nevertheless took upon himself all the sin of the world: hatred, cruelty, stupidity, violence, institutional corruption, betrayal, denial—all of it. But rather than lashing out in answering violence, he said, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” Laboring under the full weight of human wickedness, his soul remained inviolate. And this is why, to the consternation of all of the advocates of “might makes right,” from Callicles to Nietzsche, we hold up the cross and say, “ Ecce homo ,” behold the true man.

My intellectual hero, St. Thomas Aquinas, said that if we want to live a happy life, we should love what Jesus loved on the cross and despise what he despised on the cross. What did he despise but all of those objects of false worship to which we tend to erect altars. Many of us worship wealth, but on the cross he was utterly poor, stripped naked; many of us worship pleasure, but on the cross he was at the limit of suffering, both physical and psychological; many of us worship power, but on the cross he was nailed in place, unable even to move; and many of us worship honor, but on that terrible cross he was the object of scorn and ridicule. In short, the crucified Lord said no as radically as possible to the idols. But what did he love on the cross? He loved doing the will of his Father. The cross itself functioned as the altar on which the sacrifice of his life to the Father took place, and this is why the fire fell.

The 1966 film A Man for All Seasons , based on Robert Bolt’s play of the same name, tells the story of St. Thomas More, a man well-acquainted with the philosophies of classical antiquity and a man in love with the Lord Jesus. One of the last scenes of the film depicts the dramatic trial of More, under accusation for high treason. Richard Rich, who as a young man had been Thomas More’s friend and protégé, falsely testifies against him, perjuring himself and practically guaranteeing that More will receive the death penalty. As Rich is leaving the courtroom, More notices that the younger man is wearing a chain of office. Inquiring of the judges what the symbol at the end of the chain means, More receives the answer: “Sir Richard is appointed Attorney General for Wales.” More grasps the pendant and with a look more pitying than indignant, comments, “Why Richard, it profits a man nothing to give his soul for the whole world—but for Wales?” More was not so much blaming Rich, as noticing, with infinite sadness, the kind of person he had become: a man with a corroded soul.

It might have been otherwise. In a lesser-known scene from earlier in the film, More suggests Rich pursue a job as a humble teacher, but Rich, ambitious for glory at the king’s court, balks. The wise More says, “You’d be a fine teacher, perhaps a great one.” His protégé retorts angrily, “If I was, who would know it?” More patiently responds, “you, your pupils, your friends, God. Not a bad public, that.” This exchange provides us a third way of asking our question: to which audience, finally, are you playing? A lost soul plays to the endlessly fickle audience of the world, hoping thereby to acquire the fleeting goods that the world can provide. The uncorroded soul plays to God and to the friends of God, seeking to please them alone.

St. John Paul II, in his writings on the moral life, observed that in every particular ethical choice a person makes, he is doing two things simultaneously. He is performing a moral act with definite consequences, and he is making his character—crafting, little by little, the person he is becoming. I have the confident hope that your years at Hillsdale College have prepared you, above all, to shape your characters, to become the kind of men and women who would endure injustice rather than commit injustice, who would never dream of worshiping at the altar of an idol, and who wouldn’t surrender the integrity of your souls for the whole world.

And if you become the persons God intends you to be, you will succeed in lighting a fire upon the earth.

Having said that, I don’t mean to scare you, all I want to say, we have prepared you all in such a manner that no matter, how forceful or critical the challenges are, always encounter those with full strength and vigour.

As you know, our college is famous for nurturing each student and for building a concrete base for their next level; I am proud to say that you have achieved this significant milestone under the guidance of the Principal and the VP Sir and each teacher who taught you important lesson of your life.

Today, I take immense pride in saying that we are highly proud of your achievements and accomplishments that you have established over these years. Our students enjoy good fame across the city as they are good not only in studies but also in sports and the majority of the credit goes to the Principal and the VP Sir who always support the students and encourage and appreciate the teachers for introducing innovation and novelty.

Though we have also been strict sometimes while delivering our duties towards you, it was only because we wanted to prepare you for all types of situations in the future. Life may not always be smooth; hence you must also know how to overcome challenges and disputes.

My advice to all my dear students is that you must be determined in your life and never look back. Past must always be considered a lesson not a deterrent. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and don’t lament your mistakes, instead, get up, learn from your mistakes and move ahead. Always look ahead and be optimistic while taking up new projects, assignments or challenges in your personal or professional life. You are certainly going to succeed in your life just remember the lessons learnt at this college.

I would also like to say, while you must do well in your professional life, don’t restrict yourself to the office’s boundaries, nurture some hobby as well; take out time for family and live your life to the fullest. Use your knowledge and power for making others happy and successful.

I want to begin my speech by congratulating all of you for having scored great grades in your final engineering exams. While I believe, these 4 years have been the most crucial years for all of you; some of you have actually made the most out of it. I, being the class teacher of the final year engineering students have witnessed most of my students being really nervous and anxious about the final exams; however, it used to make me very happy to see that all of you had been sincere and determined in achieving great scores, which you all have after we have received the scores.

At the same time, the college was also honest and sincere in providing you with the best facilities, amenities, best teachers, counsellor, and the education standard required by you to explore your knowledge to the fullest.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my fellow professors, teachers, VP Sir, and most importantly the Principal Sir. We all were determined to transform all of you to a highly skilled and knowledgeable professional who can easily mend any machine anytime, anywhere.

Dear students, here, I would like to add something; life is a journey and you may come across various situations that may seem to you erroneous and flawed. Don’t surrender in such situations and always remember, God has the capacity of mending everything on our life and our patience and the time are our two friends that help us tackle any situation.

While many of you might have plans to join big companies, some of you may prefer exploring your career abroad, many of you may also be considering starting your own business. I can’t resist myself sharing with you some motivational lines quoted by the great Swami Vivekananda; he said we must adopt one idea and make that particular idea our life by thinking of it, dreaming of it and living on that particular idea. Ultimately, the muscles, brain, nerves and each part of our body get filled with that idea. He shared this secret mantra of success with the youth like you and I would also urge you all to follow this and be successful in every sphere of your life.

While we are highly satisfied and extremely happy that you all have passed the final engineering exams and are graduates now, the feeling makes us sad that you all will leave the institute now. All the students have had shared a good relationship with the teachers and you all have been very well behaved; and we urge you all to behave in a professional manner in the world outside and bring good repute and fame to our college.

When one chapter of life gets over, the other starts; so does your journey! You all are certified graduates now and the next chapter of your life will bring another set of challenges and perks in the next stage of your lives. I am very sure that you would be successful there too, as you have been successful here.

On this note I am going to end my speech and just would want to add that you must always remain sincere in whatever you attempt to do next and always stay positive to be able to let success follow you.

We have assembled here to celebrate a very important day of our students’ lives and of course our college too, i.e. the farewell party. Like every year, this year too, all our students have successfully graduated keeping the fame of our college in high spirit. This day is important for both the students as well as for our college because this day is the turning point in their life as they would now get apart for making their respective careers. College life is a very remarkable bridge between a person’s adolescence i.e. school life and maturity i.e. professional life.

On this grand event, I would take the honour of delivering few lines for my students and make it a memorable day for them and myself. Today, 15th of August, is a day of great joy, especially for the students who are graduating this year and their respective parents.

My dear students, in spite of some hard work, unhappiness, depression and sadness encountered by you during your study course, you all have successfully completed this journey of your college life with remarkable grades along with a lot of enjoyable memories.

The teachers might have been little strict at times with you all, this is because our college holds very good reputation outside as you know; we didn’t want that image to be brought down by any act of our students or teachers. However, being strict with you sometimes didn’t mean that we do not love you all; it was only a way for preparing you for the greater challenges that lie ahead of your life.

I, along with all the fellow colleagues, wish to congratulate you all for the exceptional passion you have shown towards your course and studies and your relationship building with your teachers, fellow students, staffs, management and the junior students. This relationship management will help you a lot in your professional and personal life.

While I am discussing the good parts of our college, I would also like to highlight some dark side of our college, which are ragging and bullying. When I had joined as the Principal 5 years ago, the college had got bad repute in regards to ragging and some students had been expelled on the same ground. However, in the past 3 years, not even a single such incident has been recorded. I would like to especially thank you all for maintaining the decorum and of the college and for contributing towards image building of our prestigious college.

My dear students, God bless you and one more thing I want to say that after leaving this college surely, some big or small challenges await you, but I am sure that the skill and knowledge you get from here and the manner you managed yourselves definitely help you to overcome them.

Before I rest my speech, I would like to say that be nice and kind to every single person you meet in your professional and personal life irrespective of their post or position. Always listen to your heart, believe in yourself and tackle the challenges you come up in your life. Life is not beautiful unless we make it.

In the end, I would like to appeal to my dear students to project themselves as good ambassadors of this college and never let self-centred motives malign the honesty and ethics you have acquired here over the years.

Hence, on behalf of the entire college and the management, I wish you all the best for your life. May the almighty always guide you on your path and bless you!

Today is a very special day for all of us as one batch of our undergraduate students is leaving us after three years. We have gathered here today to celebrate and bid them goodbye. Looking back to the day they had entered this college, it feels great that they have made the most of this place and have become better human beings. They transformed from teenagers to mature people and we have witnessed of their growth. They have performed well both in academics and extracurricular activities. They have brought many accolades to the school. They have learned from us and in return, they have taught us many things.

On your farewell day, I want to tell you that your contribution to this college is valuable. This college has prepared you for your next flight. The world needs enthusiastic and creative people like you. It is your time to earn your name, make your career and make your parents and mentors proud. As your Principal, I feel very proud that despite the notoriety and mischief, you were able to make your place in our hearts. You never brought bad name to this institution and showed us that you belong from a good family. You have taken stand for the right things and fought against the wrong. You are everything that should keep your dreams alive. Some of you will head towards jobs and some will pursue further studies.

Many challenges await you, but one thing you should always keep in mind is that you must remain humble. I am sure your poised character will earn you accolades.

Dear students, this college was yours more than it was mine. You made it yours and nothing; it makes me happier to see your love and admiration towards the institution. We undertook your suggestions to make this college better and at par with the top universities. We may have not said it often but your batch indeed produced the most innovative ideas and helped us implementing those ideas effectively.

So, as you all leave this place today, I, on behalf of the faculty and administration, would like to remind you that you have been a wonderful batch and you will be missed. You are always welcomed to visit us and clarify your queries. We will definitely invite you all as alumina as we value every individual who was once a part of this institution. Good morning my dear students and others present here!

It’s your farewell function today and I am glad to be a part of it. Today is the day when we and your professors, formally bid you good bye with a heavy heart but also with uncountable wishes. You all have been great students (well, most of the times) and as your professor, I feel immensely proud that I have taught you. Students, you may think that you are not ready to take a flight after your college but trust me, you are. After college, one is left wondering about the next step. You must be feeling perplexed about what you will do after college and how you will reach your desired college or job but you have to believe in the fact that you in fact are ready to take the leap. It may appear to be difficult. But have faith in yourself. You have to make yourself believe that you are ready to go ahead in life and reach the zenith of success. Therefore, do not let anything stop you, not even yourself.

You people are young, energetic and enthusiastic in life and so, push yourself towards the good in life. Fresh and intellectual minds like yours are capable of achieving a lot in life. You have brilliant and revolutionary ideas. Do not let them go in vain. If you have decided about the next level, work harder towards it and if you haven’t, then do not worry. Take some time off and discover your area of interest, research about the options available and go for it. Students, always remember that it is never too late to make a future in what you love to do. So, there is no rush in life as it is not a race.

My dear students a piece of advice from my side is that do not let anything scare you. No exam is difficult enough not to pass and you have been prepared well to appear for all sorts of exams. Be fierce. Study hard. Dream big and stay humble. My good wishes and blessings are with each one of you and leaving this space does not mean leaving behind the people. So, stay in touch. Keep telling us about your accolades and achievements in life. Let us all continue to be a part of a one big family that we have been all this time. You can always ask to us if you have any queries in future and we all would be happy to offer our help.

Today is your last day at the college and we, your juniors, are certainly going to miss you a lot. We have had the pleasure of studying with you, learning from your experiences and bonding with you. In a bunch of seniors, we made some lovely friends. This is our chance to tell you that you have been very helpful and approachable. We were novice when we first came to this college but it was just because of you people that we opened up and started participating in the discussions. You did not bully, instead you have been extremely supportive these years. You made efforts to make all of us comfortable from the day we entered college and made sure we did not feel alienated. So this farewell party is a small token of respect for the seniors from their juniors. We have interesting games and activities lined up for you. We hope you have an amazing time today.

Before we move on to the fun part of the day, we would like to thank you for certain things and confess that you all were an important part of our college lives. Your batch was different from the other batches and even our professors agree to this. You have been our motivation so many times that not finding you by our side will definitely be a change we will have difficulty in adapting to. We have learned a great deal from you and have considered your suggestions before venturing into new fields. We all have curated many events together in these past two/three years and have put up successful shows in the college. Working together on projects was a great experience and it is true that we will cherish the moments spent in each other’s company. We would invite you to our literary events and will keep meeting you every now and then.

Bidding you farewell does not feel great but it is how life works; it keeps moving ahead. This is just a formality because we would remain friends even after this. We wish you all the very best in all your future journey and hope that you get all you desire for. We would like to thank you for everything you have done for us and we hope that we will stay in touch in future as well. We assure you that we would keep pestering you with our queries and problems and will not let you forget us. Now that you will not be seen on campus every day, we would miss the time spent with you in the classrooms, corridors, playgrounds and canteen. College was too stressful and expensive for me. But I loved grad school because it was free and incredibly fulfilling.

Parties with the iconic red cups, big tailgates, and no cares in the world: this is how college is often depicted in movies. While my college experience included these moments, those aspects were only a small fraction of my college experience . 

Despite loving school, I didn’t particularly enjoy my time in college. A large part of that was the financial implications. Since I had taken out student loans, I felt a lot of anxiety about the cost of college .

If I could do it again, I would have worried about money less and branched out more instead of rushing to get my degree. But my reality was that college meant a lot of work — inside and outside the classroom. I worked various jobs, including in fast food, to support myself. I spent a lot of solitary nights in the library studying. I was homesick , and I hated the bureaucracy around required classes.

Because of my less-than-stellar college experience, I wasn’t expecting much from graduate school , which I attended about five years after receiving my Bachelor’s degree. But I found that graduate school was incredibly fulfilling. 

Graduate school let me narrow in on one specific passion

Graduate school had a specific focus, which allowed me to hone in on my interests. My focus was creative writing, specifically poetry. 

I was able to do exactly what I wanted and concentrate on my craft. The classwork and homework felt purposeful. Each assignment was an exercise that would bring me closer to a thesis that I could be proud of and that could ultimately be transformed into a book for the next stage of my career. 

My program was fully funded, so money wasn’t as much of a concern

My graduate program was small, and because of that, it offered full funding for students who were residents of the state, which I was. Lifting this financial burden allowed me to fully enjoy my time without worrying about the cost. 

The program was also designed with professionals in mind, and the classes began in the evening. This allowed me to keep my full-time job and attend school at night. My graduate school program also allowed me to teach a college course to undergraduate students . This opportunity, which was paid, reaffirmed my desire to work as an educator in some capacity throughout my career.  

While college had me burning the candle at both ends, graduate school allowed me to be more intentional with my time. Instead of working several minimum wage jobs at once, like I did in college, I had a much more regular schedule. 

Though I was still busy, my schedule gave me a lot of time to socialize 

Graduate school actually gave me more time with friends. Though the stereotype is that college is all about partying, it was only in graduate school that I really got to enjoy hanging out with friends since my life had more structure, and I carefully planned my free time.

My obligations were more predictable, allowing me to build a more robust social life . 

Plus, since I had common ground with my cohort, we could do things inside and outside the classroom together, like go to poetry readings, which were part of our syllabus.

Ultimately, even though some things were unexpected, I wouldn’t change my experience

I graduated with my Master’s degree in 2020, so the pandemic impacted the last semester. While I couldn’t wait to finish college at the time, I was very sad that graduate school was over, and it was difficult to process the end, especially during that uncertain period. 

The differences in my undergraduate and graduate experiences showed me how vastly dissimilar expectations and reality truly can be — and it reaffirmed why it’s important to keep an open mind. 

Graduate school ended up being better than I could have imagined because of various unexpected pluses, and I’ll always think fondly of that period.

Biden Says Too Many Americans Are Saddled With School Debt as He Cancels Federal Loans for 153,000

CULVER CITY, Calif. (AP) — President Joe Biden said Wednesday that while a college degree was still a ticket to a better life, that ticket is often too expensive, as he announced he was canceling federal student loans for nearly 153,000 borrowers.

Biden, who is in the midst of a three-day campaign swing through California , made the announcement as part of a new repayment plan that offers a faster path to forgiveness, putting the spotlight on his debt cancellation efforts as he ramps up his reelection campaign.

“Too many Americans are still saddled with unsustainable debt in exchange for a college degree,” he said from a local library, before he went on to campaign-related events. Loan relief helps the greater economy, he reasoned, because "when people have a student debt relief, they buy homes. They start businesses, they contribute. They engage.”

The administration began sending email notifications on Wednesday to some of the borrowers who will benefit from what the White House has called the SAVE program. The cancellations were originally scheduled to start in July, but last month the administration said it would be ready almost six months ahead of schedule, in February.

“Starting today, the first round of folks who are enrolled in our SAVE student loan repayment plan who have paid their loans for 10 years and borrowed $12,000 or less will have their debt cancelled,” Biden posted on social media Wednesday. “That’s 150,000 Americans and counting. And we’re pushing to relieve more."

The first round of forgiveness from the SAVE plan will clear $1.2 billion in loans. The borrowers will get emails with a message from Biden notifying them that “all or a portion of your federal student loans will be forgiven because you qualify for early loan forgiveness under my Administration’s SAVE Plan.”

In his email to borrowers, Biden wrote he heard from “countless people who have told me that relieving the burden of their student loan debt will allow them to support themselves and their families, buy their first home, start a small business, and move forward with life plans they’ve put on hold.”

More than 7.5 million people have enrolled in the new repayment plan.

He said Wednesday it was the kind of relief “that can be life-changing for individuals and their families.”

“I’m proud to have been able to give borrowers like so many of you the relief you earned,” he said, asking the crowd gathered for his speech how many had debt forgiven. Many raised their hands.

During a quick stop at CJ’s Cafe before his library talk, Biden greeted customers, offering handshakes and hugs and posing for selfies. After his speech, Biden headed to San Francisco, where he was greeted by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and headed to a fundraiser at a private home, where he spoke of his efforts to combat climate change to a roomful of donors.

Biden announced the new loan repayment plan last year alongside a separate plan to cancel up to $20,000 in loans for millions of Americans. The Supreme Court struck down his plan for widespread forgiveness, but the repayment plan has so far escaped that level of legal scrutiny. Unlike his proposal for mass cancellation — which had never been done before — the repayment plan is a twist on existing income-based plans created by Congress more than a decade ago.

Biden said he remained steadfast in his commitment to “fix our broken student loan system," working around the court's ruling to find other ways to get it done.

Borrowers are eligible for cancellation if they are enrolled in the SAVE plan, originally borrowed $12,000 or less to attend college and have made at least 10 years of payments. Those who took out more than $12,000 will be eligible for cancellation but on a longer timeline. For each $1,000 borrowed beyond $12,000, it adds an additional year of payments on top of 10 years.

The maximum repayment period is capped at 20 years for those with only undergraduate loans and 25 years for those with any graduate school loans.

What You Need to Know About the Lawsuit  

The lawsuit was filed in September 2022 against ECTA and CCSD with student plaintiffs from ECTA Students for Life of America’s leadership team. 

In 2021, Students for Life at ECTA noticed that their school treated them differently than other student clubs. While other clubs could post flyers in the school hallways and write announcements for the school newspaper, ECTA Students for Life were denied these rights by their school. ECTA Students for Life’s flyers, which said, “I reject abortion,” were considered “too controversial” by their public high school.  

But that’s not all.  

When being interviewed by the media, Plaintiff Felipe Avila, former president of the ECTA SFLA chapter , said he was harassed and threatened in the hallways and online. He was even stalked by a peer , but the school did nothing.

As a public high school in Nevada, ECTA is required under the First Amendment to respect all student and student clubs’ rights to free speech — but instead, ECTA blatantly ignored and exacerbated the free speech infringements of the ECTA Students for Life of America group. 

After recent developments, ECTA Students for Life will finally be treated with the same privileges and rights as other student clubs.

Compound vital for all life likely played a role in life’s origin

A chemical compound essential to all living things has been synthesised in a lab in conditions that could have occurred on early Earth, suggesting it played a role at the outset of life, finds a new study led by UCL researchers.

The compound, pantetheine, is the active fragment of Coenzyme A. It is important for metabolism - the chemical processes that maintain life. Earlier studies failed to synthesise pantetheine effectively, leading to suggestions that it was absent at life’s origin.

In the new study, published in the journal Science , the research team created the compound in water at room temperature using molecules formed from hydrogen cyanide, which was likely abundant on early Earth.

Once formed, the researchers said, it is simple to envisage how pantetheine might have aided chemical reactions that led from simple forerunners of protein and RNA molecules to the first living organisms – a moment that is thought to have occurred 4 billion years ago.

The study challenges the view among some researchers in the field that water is too destructive for life to originate in it and that life more likely originated in pools that periodically dried out.

Driving the reactions that produced pantetheine were energy-rich molecules called aminonitriles, which are closely chemically related to amino acids, the building blocks of proteins and of life.

Members of the same team, led by Professor Matthew Powner (UCL Chemistry), have already used similar chemistry powered by aminonitriles to demonstrate how other key biological ingredients could be created at the origin of life, including peptides (protein-creating chains of amino acids) and nucleotides (the building blocks of RNA and DNA).

Professor Powner, senior author of the paper, said: “This new study is further evidence that the basic structures of biology, the primary molecules that biology is built from, are predisposed to form through nitrile chemistry.

“The ease with which different classes of biological molecules can be made using nitriles has convinced me that, rather than life being preceded by one molecule such as RNA, and there being an ‘RNA world’ before life began, the basic molecules of biology emerged alongside each other – a network of RNAs, proteins, enzymes and cofactors leading to the first living organisms.

“Our future work will look at how these molecules came together, how pantetheine chemistry talks to RNA, peptide and lipid chemistry for instance, to deliver chemistry that the individual classes of molecule could not deliver in isolation.”

A notable earlier attempt to synthesise pantetheine was made in 1995 by the late American chemist Stanley Miller, who had started the field of origin of life experiments three decades earlier, creating amino acids from four simple chemicals in glass tubes.

However, in the later 1995 experiment, the yields of pantetheine were very low and required extremely high concentrations of chemicals that had been dried out and sealed in an airtight tube before they were heated to 100 degrees Centigrade.

Dr Jasper Fairchild (UCL Chemistry), a lead author of the study, who conducted the work as part of his PhD, said: “The major difference between Miller’s study and ours is whereas Miller tried to use acid chemistry, we used nitriles. It’s the nitriles that bring the energy and the selectivity. Our reactions just run in water and produce high yields of pantetheine with relatively low concentrations of chemicals needed.”

Professor Powner added: “It had been assumed you should make these molecules from acids, because using acids appears to be biological, and that is what we are taught at school and at university. We are taught peptides are made from amino acids.

“Our work suggests this conventional view has ignored an essential ingredient, the energy required to forge new bonds. The reactions look a little different with nitriles but the end products – the basic units of biology – are indistinguishable whether formed through acid or nitrile chemistry.”

While the paper focuses solely on the chemistry, the research team said that the reactions they demonstrated could plausibly have taken place in pools or lakes of water on the early Earth (but not likely in the oceans as the concentrations of the chemicals would likely be too diluted).

Dr Saidul Islam (UCL Chemistry and King’s College London), a lead author of the study, said: “Because pantetheine looks so unusual and complex, it has always been thought that its creation must have come after the advent of complex life, but our work suggests this molecule has always been there, and if so, it certainly would have contributed to the beginning of life on this planet.

“This paper goes to show that just because the structure of a molecule looks complex, it doesn’t mean the chemistry that generated it needs to be as well.”

The new study was supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the Simons Foundation and the Volkswagen Foundation. As a result of his work on the origins of life, Professor Powner was named a finalist in the 2021 Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists. The awards are for scientists aged 42 or younger whose research “is already transforming technology and our understanding of the world”.
