How To Make A Holiday Scrapbook With Kids: 13 Awesome Ideas

How to make a holiday scrapbook with children.

A couple of years ago we took our son out of school to have a fun trip in America, visiting New York, Naples, and Florida.

At the time he was only 6 years old, so we spoke to the school who didn’t fine us but asked if he could compile a scrapbook while he was there.

This was before we decided to homeschool but this is a tradition we have continued.

I was all up for the idea as it would be a great memory for him, and in fact, he made one recently of our time in Jamaica.

More importantly, he was excited about doing it as well, so a result.

On our trip, we, of course, took a lot of photos, but we made sure our son collected as much as he could while we were there.

Pretty much anything he had over the space of the holiday we collected.

  • Boarding Cards
  • Luggage Label
  • Activity Books from restaurants – check out our free printable Christmas placemats .
  • Entrance Tickets
  • Subway tickets
  • Money (of course just loose change!!)
  • Theatre Tickets
  • Scorecards (when we played crazy golf!)
  • Handbooks (Wilderness Explorer handbook from Animal Kingdom)
  • Epcot Passport (see which are the best Disney parks for 6 year old )
  • Pictures he had drawn

Scrapbooking with kids

My top tip is to make your scrapbook as soon as you can after your holiday, so it is still very fresh in their memory.

Craft Supplies Needed

  • Scrapbook (we have used this one, or a photo album will work!)
  • Photo paper
  • Holiday scrapbook stickers
  • Scrapbook paper

FaCraft Summer Party Scrapbook Stickers,50pcs Summer Scrapbooking Sticker

Choose the photos you want to include with your child and put them in order. We did it in day order as we traveled quite a lot. We have a printer at home so it was easy, but you can very cheaply get these printed.

Collect all of the things you collected on your trip and put them in the order with the photos.

For every day of your trip ask your child to write a couple of sentences about what they did. I tried not to help too much, which is why some of the words are written phonetically rather than spelled correctly. But I was super proud of him.

a map in a holiday scrapbook

Make sure you lay everything in the pages of the scrapbook before you actually start gluing just to make sure you utilize the book properly.

We put all of the maps at the end of the scrapbook as we had collected so many, maps of the Disney resorts, Universal Studios, and New York.

Whilst we didn’t have access to a die-cutting machine, you can also easily create your own custom-themed stickers and shapes with the help of a manual scrapbook die-cutting machine . I’m sure your child will enjoy cranking the handle to cut out some fun designs.

Then the best part, sticking!!!! All we used was either sticky tape or a glue stick so was super easy for our son to use.

Holiday Scrapbook with hotel keys, photos, and handwritten note

This scrapbook was made 4 years ago, and he is still so proud of it. It regularly comes out and he loves showing family and friends.

Due to him making this scrapbook he now actually remembers the holiday really well as he looks through the scrapbook all the time. I have to say it was probably the best craft / educational thing we have ever done with him.

Do you have any scrapbooking ideas? If so I would love to hear your top tips.

Such a great thing to do. We did this with our kids who are a bit older now and they LOVE going back through them. I really like the maps, hadn’t thought of that.

We did a scrapbook last summer holidays and it was a great way to get my daughter to write and also keep for the memories. We will be doing the same this year.

I always used to do this for our big family holidays, and I can still remember them all so well, it’s such a great way to cement those memories. And I still look at those scrapbooks now! I’ve not done this yet with my son, but I think this year he will be old enough to and I think he’ll love it – he loves looking through old photos and his memory box.

It is so nice for them to make and collect all the things while on holiday as well. It certainly has made us remember the holiday much more, and we will do it for every big holiday we have 🙂

I recall doing this with my mum and look forward to doing kit with the kids too.

Its a really lovely thing to do and look back on 🙂 x

Oh this is such a lovely way to capture the memories of a special holiday. I’m sure you’ll always look back on it fondly together.

I know its so special for us, we look at it all the time. x

This is absolutely lovely! We love to collect bits from our adventures and holidays but haven’t yet compiled them into a scrapbook. Now that the kids are 6 I know this would be an activity they would thoroughly enjoy! x

I encourage N to do a scrapbook over the summer holidays. He quite likes doing it although hates writing. It’s just a faff printing out photos because our home printer doesn’t work.

Love this, reminds me of the school holidays when I was little. We always used to make scrapbooks over the summer

It is something I had never done previously, it was the school that suggested it, and I am so glad they did. Freddie absolutely loved making it and still looks through them now x

That is a fantastic thing to do and really good of the school to allow you to do that. Great memories to share.

I love this idea! We also does scrap book with Ethan too, but we keep stopping and starting, and then we forgets about it now. I think we need to start ours again. Thank you for your inspirations. xx

I think scrapbooking is a great way to get the family together, as well as wonderful for curating all the lovely memories made – not to mention, most kids love the creative element too!

Yes I couldn’t agree more, Freddie is so proud of what he achieved and is such a great memory for him.

  • 10 Tips for Teachers: Creative Summer Holiday Homework

Imaginative activities and projects to pack your students' summer holidays with creativity

13 July 2022

Bonus: Homework for teachers. Take some time over the summer to look after your own wellbeing (although maybe wait until just before the new term starts!) with these Dreamachine Teacher Wellbeing CPD videos and creative activities .

1. Dreamachine Resources At Home Pack

Print off the entire pack or just one or two from this collection of activities from the Dreamachine Schools resources, specially picked out for families at home. They include science, global citizenship and wellbeing activities suitable for all ages, but will need adults to support the delivery as they are written in a lesson plan style. The activities include an interactive science survey into the senses: Life’s Big Questions – with videos to watch presented by Newsround’s Martin Dougan and fun illusions to try out.

2. British Science Week Activity Packs

For child-facing activities that are print off and go try this year’s British Science Week activity packs , which include a Dreamachine optical illusion challenge.

3. Summer Reading Challenge 2022

This year’s summer reading challenge is online and even if your school didn’t sign—up, children can still register to join in online and get books form the library: www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/

You could print out this resource from StoryTrails and Unboxed Learning , with lots of ideas for storytelling.

4. The Poetry Society and Stemettes About Us Competition

About Us is all about exploring the many ways life across the universe is connected. Young people aged 4-18 can enter their poems and/ or Scratch projects on the theme of ‘connectivity and the universe‘, to win books and tech goodies, talent development opportunities, and free workshops for their school. All entrants will receive an e-certificate for participating and the competition closes on 31 August 2022. www.aboutus.earth/about-the-competition

5. Teaching for Creativity Taster Cards

Our Teaching for Creativity Taster Card activities are short and simple so could easily be facilitated by a parent or carer!

6. Keep an alternative journal

Document your summer break in a diary, but try to do it without writing a word! Create a scrapbook (or box!) of your summer, to remind you of what you did and how you felt. Try to include something for every week, but you can include as many entries as you like. How many different types of entries can you do? Some ideas are:

  • Draw or paint a picture of what you did
  • Draw the weather that day
  • Close your eyes and draw how you feel
  • Take a photo
  • Collect a memento e.g. a ticket, a receipt, a food packet, newspaper, a leaf, a stone
  • Draw a list of the music you listened to / books you read / games you played
  • Make a collage of something you are looking forward to
  • Make a picture of the tastiest food you ate – try using something unusual in a collage like pasta, lentils or cut up food packaging
  • Listen to the noises outside and draw what you think you can hear

7. Design a new invention

Invent something to solve the problem of ____________.

Draw your invention and label it or make a model of it and a short video explaining how it will work. Think about: How does it work? What size will it be if you made it for real? What material is it made of? Where does it get power or energy from to work? What will you call it?

Check out Little Inventors for inspiration: www.littleinventors.org/ideas

Insert a problem to solve that you think your students will know about / connects to your learning this year or look on www.littleinventors.org/mini-challenges/

Some ideas are: plastic food packaging, ocean pollution, keeping cool in the heatwave, keeping house plants alive, how to stay dry when camping, learning times tables, getting to school on time.

8. Put on an art exhibition

Visit Tate Kids and choose some of the activities to create your own artwork: www.tate.org.uk/kids/make

Once you have enough pieces, stage an art exhibition in your home or garden and invite families and friends. Think about how you want them to feel when they are in the exhibition. Do you want them to feel excited/calm/intrigued or think about issues you care about? How can you display your work to try and achieve this? Take photos and collect some quotes of how they found the experience!

9. Learn some origami

Learn to make something out of origami, the art of paper folding. Maths on Toast have some how-to-videos: www.mathsontoast.org.uk/activity-category/videos/

All you need is some squares of paper – even newspaper will do (an easy way to make a square of paper is to fold one corner over to the bottom edge and then cut along ).

10. Write a cultural review

Write a review of a film/book/computer game/album/podcast /play/day out/experience – anything cultural that interests you! How did it make you feel? What were the best bits? What could improve? What surprised you?

You could provide them with a quick list of family days out (preferably free and local) to spark ideas. If your students are London based, here is a list of some free goings on in the capital to get you started:

Greenwich + Docklands - International Festival 2022 (FREE) 26 August – 11 September / Festival - free theatre, art, dance and circus.

Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster: Alienarium 5 at Serpentine South Gallery (FREE) until 4 September / Art exhibition - a speculative environment that invites us to imagine possible encounters with extraterrestrials.

Covent Garden Cool Down – August Bank Holiday weekend / Experience - an annual ice cream festival on the streets of Covent Garden.

Take One Picture 2022 at the National Gallery (FREE) until 11 September / Art exhibition - primary schools from across the UK have responded creatively to 'The Finding of Moses' by Orazio Gentileschi.

Hew Locke: The Procession at Tate Britain (FREE) until January 2023 / Art exhibition – an installation of sculptures of people gathering and moving together to and ‘to celebrate, worship, protest, mourn, escape or even to better themselves’.

Kids Week – throughout August / Theatre - children 17 and under can go to theatre shows for free when accompanied by a full price paying adult.

Brent Biennial 2022: In The House Of My Love (FREE) until 11 September / Art exhibition - artists and community groups whose works explore the many meanings of homemaking.

Hold on to memories of adventures gone by with this super-easy holiday scrapbook layout. Armed with a few craft stash essentials and some of your favourite snaps, you're creative juices will be flowing in next to no time. We've opted for an A4 layout, however the design can easily be tweaked to fit a 12 x 12" or 8 x 8" page.

How to make

You will also need:

A typewriter

Craft Knife - available in store

Start by punching circles from a variety of card and paper stock using a 1″ craft punch. For this A4 layout you'll need 42 circles in total.

Position the cut circles in seven rows of seven on top of white cardstock. Once happy with the arrangement secure each circle in place with a sewing machine starting on the bottom row. Ensure a small gap is left between each circle. When it comes to sewing the row above in place, slightly overlap the circles. Once all of the circles are attached, trim the A4 sheet to 19.5cm square.

Cut a sheet of adhesive foam to 19.5cm square and secure to the back of the stitched panel. Add double-sided tape to the reverse and mount centrally to the bottom half of another sheet of white cardstock, trimmed to 20 x 29cm. Finally mat to a sheet of yellow card.

Print, then cut out your images and mount to white cardstock, leaving a 5mm border. Secure to the layout with double-sided tape.

Use alphabet stickers to create your title, utilising the white space at the top of the layout – we've experimented with overlapping our title onto our images too.

Add your journaling using a typewriter (you could also use alphabet stamps), trim to size with a pair of scissors before securing to the layout.

Christmas Scrapbook Ideas & Layouts

Last Updated on September 15, 2023 by Ellen Christian

I’ve been working on some Christmas scrapbook ideas and a basic holiday scrapbook layout so I can deal with all the other photographs I have from when the kids were little.

If I thought I had a bunch of Halloween photographs, I have way more from Christmas. This project has made me understand more than ever why it’s so important to organize my photographs regularly.

The kids really enjoyed seeing their Halloween photos in a scrapbook so I know they’re going to enjoy seeing the holiday scrapbook layout I made.

I’m using the Project Life method to scrapbook my photos. Project life is quick and easy and doesn’t take tons of time or a lot of special skills.

I just don’t have the patience to create a scrapbook page from scratch and cut out all my embellishments. With Project Life, I can get card collections, stamp sets and accessory packs for just about any theme I like.

The photo pocket pages are divided into different sizes so I can just insert the photographs and add different sized cards and accessories to dress up the page.

You may remember that last month, I organized my Halloween photos of the kids .

Christmas Scrapbook Ideas | Holiday Scrapbook Layout

One of the problems that I have with coming up with Christmas scrapbook ideas is that most of my photos are a bunch of different sizes. Remember how you use to be able to get photos 3×5 and 4×6.

Don’t even get me started on school photographs and Polaroid photographs. With Project Life, I can add different background cards using accessory packs so that all my photos fit in the photo pocket pages.

Then I add some stickers or some letters or some sequins and I’ll all set.

Christmas Scrapbook Ideas | Holiday Scrapbook Layout

I love how easy Project Life is to use and that it doesn’t require any special crafting skills. I can start and stop when I’m making my scrapbook page depending on how much time I have and I can move things around if I change my mind about what I want it to look like.
