Continued Decline of Wetlands Documented in New U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Report
WASHINGTON — A new report released by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reveals wetlands – 95 percent of which are freshwater — covered less than 6 percent of the lower 48 states as of 2019 – which is half the area they covered since the 1780s. The report also identifies that loss rates have increased by 50 percent since 2009 and that without additional conservation actions taken to protect these ecosystems, wetland loss will likely continue, reducing ecosystem benefits for people and habitat for fish, wildlife and plants.
This sixth edition of the national “Wetlands Status and Trends” report to Congress measured wetland change from 2009 to 2019 and builds on data from a series of reports spanning 70 years, highlighting the importance of wetlands.
“The reasons for these losses are multiple, but the results are clear – wetland loss leads to the reduced health, safety and prosperity of all Americans,” said Martha Williams, Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. “This report serves as a call to action to stop and reverse wetland loss and ensure we continue to provide future generations with clean water, protection against natural disasters, and resilience to climate change climate change Climate change includes both global warming driven by human-induced emissions of greenhouse gases and the resulting large-scale shifts in weather patterns. Though there have been previous periods of climatic change, since the mid-20th century humans have had an unprecedented impact on Earth's climate system and caused change on a global scale. Learn more about climate change and sea level rise, as well as habitat for many plants and animals.”
The report shows wetland loss has disproportionately impacted vegetated wetlands like marshes and swamps. The rapid disappearance of vegetated wetlands between 2009 and 2019 has resulted in a loss of 670,000 acres, an area approximately equal to the land area of Rhode Island. Declines in vegetated wetlands primarily occurred in the Southeast, Great Lakes, and Prairie Pothole regions. Decreases were particularly prevalent in the coastal watersheds of the Carolinas, the Delmarva Peninsula, Florida, Louisiana and Texas, as well as near the Mississippi and Mobile rivers.
The main drivers of wetland loss have shifted over time. In the mid-1900s, loss was primarily caused by drainage and fill associated with agriculture. During the 2009 through 2019 study period, loss was associated with development, upland planted forest, and agriculture. However, other drivers also likely contributed to the loss, including climate change and sea level rise, especially along the coasts.
To achieve no net loss of all wetlands, including vegetated wetlands, the report concludes that a strategic update is needed to America’s approach to wetland conservation. Conserving and restoring vegetated wetlands will be critical to addressing climate change and threats to biodiversity.
Wetlands are one of the most productive and biodiverse habitats, with 40 percent of all plant and animal species living or breeding in wetlands. Threatened and endangered species are no exception, with approximately half of all Endangered Species Act species in the United States being wetland dependent. Wetlands provide stopover and wintering habitats for more than 4 billion birds from Canada as well as breeding habitats for nearly five billion migratory birds en route to the tropics. Wetlands also provide shelter and vital nursery habitat for many species of fish and are an important source of cultural resources for communities and many Native American Tribes.
Positioned at the transition between dry land and deepwater systems, wetlands are characterized by unique biological, chemical and hydrological conditions. Wetlands provide a multitude of ecological, economic and social benefits, as well as habitat for fish, wildlife and a variety of plants. Wetlands hold and slowly release flood water and snow melt, buffer against coastal storms, recharge groundwater, act as filters to cleanse water of impurities, recycle nutrients and provide recreational opportunities for millions of people. Wetlands are also nurseries for many salt and freshwater fishes and shellfish of commercial and recreational importance.

What is Natural vegetation? Natural Vegetation refers to plants that grow and develop by themselves without human help .
Why do we have to learn about Natural vegetation? The study of natural vegetation is important to geographers for two reasons. • Vegetation is an integral part of the physical environment • Humans depend on vegetation for food, fuel, shelter, medicine etc.
Can Natural vegetation be classified into other forms of vegetation? Natural Vegetation can be classified into: • Forest vegetation • Grass land vegetation • Desert vegetation
There are three types of tropical forests: 1. Tropical rain forests 2. Mangrove forests 3. Tropical monsoon forests
Tropical rain forests
Where are they found… The tropical rainforest spreads like a green belt around the earth. The most extensive areas with this type of forests are: • The Amazon Basin in south America. • The Congo Basin of Africa • Indonesia and East Malaysia in Asia
Tropical rainforests • Tropical (or equatorial) rainforests occur near the equator • This provides a hot and wet climate for the majority of the year
TEMPERATURE RAIN FALL
Climate • overhead sun/high angle of sun/sun shining directly • high temperatures/hot climate • high rates of evaporation/transpiration • high humidity • rising air • condensation/build up of clouds • low pressure • convectional rainfall
Climate on the natural vegetation • Abundant vegetation due to hot/wet climate • Evergreen due to lack of a cold season/limited seasonal change • Drip tip leaves to repel heavy rain • Emergents reach for sun • Variety of species as growing conditions are ideal/hot/wet
Difference in plant species… There is great variety of plant species in tropical rainforests. One hectare of land in a tropical rain forest may contain as many as 400 species of trees. The trees in tropical rainforests are largely broadleaved evergreens. Many of the trees are hardwoods. Lianas and epiphytes (air plants) such as Bird’s nest Fern are also common in tropical rainforests.
Special characteristics of trees • Leaves: Tropical rain forests trees have waxy, hairy or leathery leaves that allow rain water to run off easily. The shape of the leaves are usually broad with narrow, downward pointing tips. • Roots: Some trees have buttress roots that can grow up to more than 5m high. The roots are rather shallow as they do not need to grow deep down into the soil to extract nutrition's. • Fruit and Flowers: The fruit and flowers of tropical rainforests tend to be colorful and sweet smelling in order to attract agents of pollination.
lots of different species/huge variety e.g. teak/mahogany etc. • tall/high • thin • little undergrowth • lianas • parasites/epiphytes/fungi • layers • canopy/under canopy • emergents • buttress roots • dense/thick • drip tips • leaves at top/branchless trees • shrubs/shrub layer/short bushes
Ground layer • Moist and dark with little undergrowth, consisting of small fungi, mosses and ferns. • The leaf litter is considerably thin as the rate of decomposition is fast because of the high temperature and rainfall.
Shrub layer • Isolated shrubs, ferns and young trees have to adapt to the lack of sunlight. • These include wild ginger, pandan and tapioca
Under canopy layer • Shorter trees with discontinuous canopy. • Shade-tolerant trees like palms and tree ferns are common • Leaves are much larger at this layer compared to other layers
Canopy Layer • Trees grow so close together that their crowns interlock to form a continuous canopy • Height of canopy layers is between25m and 35m • Common woody vines called lianas twine around the tree trunk • Epiphytes grow on branches of trees
Emergent layer • The tallest trees are found in this layer. • Trees can grow to more than 40m to capture direct sunlight • They also have thick and straight trunks.
Forest Floor • Also known as the immature and herb layer • Hot, still and humid • Shade tolerant plants such as mosses and ferns • Dead and rotting vegetation that falls to the floor supports a wide variety of small insects, animals, bacteria and fungi • Can support large animals such as tigers, elephants, leopards and wild pigs • In African and South American Rainforests there are few ground animals

India's rich biodiversity • India has nearly 8 per cent of the total number of species in the world (estimated to be 1.6 million). • Over 81,000 species of fauna and 47,000 species of flora are found in this country so far! • Of the estimated 47,000 plant species, about 15,000 flowering species are endemic (indigenous) to India.
Presentation Transcript. Definition • Plant species which grow in association with one another in a particular environmental framework. • Such plant species grow naturally without any human support. Crops/ DomesticatedPlants • Plant species which humans have selected from nature to grow for their use and benefit.
In regions with less than 70 cm of rainfall, the natural vegetation consists of thorny trees and bushes. Trees are scattered and have long roots penetrating deep into the soil in order to get moisture. The stems are succulent to conserve water. Leaves are mostly thick and small to minimise evaporation.
