The sisterhood bond here in the Zeta Phi Beta community is real. It’s not something that comes from wearing matching letters or singing the same songs at every meeting, it’s an authentic connexion made of respect and shared values.

I often can’t help but share memorable highlights from weekly gathering- Heart to heart conversations during sitting rooms where we engage in intimate discussions about our daily experiences; Empowering workshops around Career development, Mentoring newcomers. This sorority provides ad infinitum opportunities for growth both personally and professionally that members should capitalize on.

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was founded on January 16, 1920, at Howard University, Washington, D.C. The Klan was active during this period, and the Harlem Renaissance was acknowledged as the first important movement of Black artists and writers in the U.S. This same year the Volstead Act became effective, heralding the start of Prohibition and Tennessee delivered the crucial 36th ratification for the final adoption of the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote. The worst and longest economic recession to hit the U.S. would define the end of the decade-The Great Depression.

Within this environment, five coeds envisioned a sorority that would directly affect positive change, chart a course of action for the 1920s and beyond, raise people’s consciousness, encourage the highest standards of scholastic achievement, and foster a greater sense of unity among its members. These women believed that sorority elitism and socializing overshadowed the real mission of progressive organizations and failed to address fully the societal mores, ills, prejudices, and poverty affecting humanity in general and the black community in particular.  

Since its inception, Zeta has continued its steady climb into the national spotlight with programs designed to demonstrate concern for the human condition both nationally and internationally. The organization has been innovative because it has chronicled several firsts. It was the first National Pan-Hellenic Council organization to centralize its operations in a national headquarters, first to charter a chapter in Africa, first to form auxiliary groups, and first to be constitutionally bound to a fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated. The sorority takes pride in its continued participation in transforming communities through volunteer services from members and its auxiliaries. Zeta Phi Beta has chartered hundreds of chapters worldwide and has a membership of 100,000+.

Zeta phi beta sorority (1920- ).

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. (Zeta), one of four college sororities for African American women, was founded on January 16, 1920, on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. by five women, now known as the “Five Pearls.” Zeta is a historically black sorority founded during a tense political climate of race riots and lynchings at the beginning of the Harlem Renaissance and just as all American women received the right to vote. Zeta formed to be a socially conscious service based organization, aware of the cultural and political changes taking place in society.

Zeta is a non-profit service organization whose members now number more than 125,000 worldwide.  Its principles are Finer Womanhood, Scholarship, Service, and Sisterly love.  Upholding these standards, Zeta has established many national programs in neighborhoods across the nation. Storks Nest is a strong example of a service based project which developed out of a partnership between Zeta and the March of Dimes in 1972. The program supports prenatal health through education and incentive programs. Zeta’s Helping Other People Excel (Z-HOPE) is an outreach service program which builds community partnerships, and offers informational activities to the community.

Zeta is known for many firsts in its history. In 1948 it became the first black Greek-letter organization to charter a chapter in Africa (in Monrovia, Liberia). It was also the first to form adult and youth auxiliary groups affiliated with the sorority.  The groups were the Archonettes, for girls ages 14-18, Amicettes for ages 9-13, Pearlettes for ages 4-8, and Amicae, women without college degrees who are still interested in community endeavors sponsored by Zeta. Additionally, Zeta was the first Greek-letter organization to establish a national headquarters in Washington, D.C. Finally, the sorority was the first black Greek-letter organization to be constitutionally bound to a brother organization, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc .

Women who have become members span a variety of talents and disciplines, including former International Grand Basileus, Sheryl Underwood , a nationally known comedian.  Zora Neale Hurston , prominent writer and folklorist was extensively involved in the Harlem Renaissance. Other members include prominent educator Dr. Elizabeth Koontz , singer Dionne Warwick , Bernette Johnson , the first African American woman to serve on the Louisiana Supreme Court, civil rights icon Autherine Lucy Foster , actress Esther Rolle , and Dr. Joyce Payne, founder of the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund.  These and other remarkable women have paved the way for Zeta to be a strong example of service and dedication for black women everywhere.

Divine Nine: Zeta Phi Beta

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was the third sorority founded within the Divine Nine on the campus of Howard University, in Washington, DC. Their five founders believed in the need for a new and different type of Greek-lettered organization and acted upon that need. To these women, Zeta was more than an organization – it was a movement, a belief system that reflected, at its core, the desire to provide true service, to embrace scholarship, to set a standard for sisterly love and to define the noble concept of finer womanhood.

Before You Begin

Anyone writing a letter of recommendation should take some time to get to know the applicant. In conclusion, I feel that Mary would be an asset to the sorority and an ideal candidate for membership. She meets all academic requirements of membership and has many talents and gifts that will further enhance the reputation of the sorority.

Finishing Touches

You should double-check it for any spelling errors or typos it may contain and sign the letter at the bottom. Keep the formatting simple and professional looking. The recommendation letter should also be brief, fitting on a single sheet of paper when printed. When you're finished, seal the letter in an envelope and address it to the sorority. Most groups will ask that all sorority letters be mailed in to avoid potential tampering.

Writing a recommendation letter for a sorority for a young woman you know should be easy; simply be honest and talk about why you think the girl would make a great sorority sister and highlight any special achievements she may have. You should be able to draft a great recommendation letter in a single afternoon, helping a young girl achieve her dreams!

Brief Ov erview

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was founded in 1920, on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. as the sister organization to Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. Five women chose not to embrace the tenets of established black sororities, and chartered Zeta Phi Beta Sorority to encourage the highest standards of scholarship through scientific, literary, cultural, and educational programs; promote service projects on college campuses and in the community; foster sisterhood; and exemplify the ideal of Finer Womanhood.

A private nonprofit organization, Zeta Phi beta Sorority is incorporated in Washington, D.C. and in the state of Illinois. Since its inception, the sorority has chronicled a number of "firsts" among the established black sororities. In addition to being the only organization constitutionally bound to a fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma, the sorority was the first to charter international chapters, those in West Africa and Germany; to form adult and youth auxiliary groups, the Amicae, Archonettes, Amicettes, and Pearlettes; and to organize its internal affairs within the central, national office administered by a paid staff.

Zeta Phi Beta's purpose is to foster the ideals of service, charity, scholarship, civic and cultural endeavors, sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood. These ideals are reflected in the sorority's national programs for which its members and auxiliary groups provide untotaled hours of voluntary service to staff community outreach programs, fund scholarships, support organized charities, and promote legislation for social and civic change.

From its inception, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority established scholarship as paramount. it has never been simply a "social" organization. Academic achievement, not social or economic status, is a cornerstone of this sisterhood. 

Our Five Pearls

A rizona Cleaver Stemons : Arizona Cleaver was the first president of Alpha chapter and the first national president of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. She completed her graduate and post-graduate studies in the field of social work and was responsible for chartering numerous undergraduate and graduate chapters through out the United States.

Pearl Anna Neal : After graduating from Howard University’s Conservatory of Music, Founder Neal continued her studies at the Julliard School of Music. In 1938, she was the first black woman in New York to earn a master’s degree in music from Columbia University. An extremely accomplished musician, Founder Neal taught music in North Carolina public schools and served as a director of seniors majoring in music at Teachers College in Winston Salem, NC.

Myrtle Tyler Faithful : Myrtle Tyler was the second national president of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and blood sister to Viola Tyler. A high s cho ol mathematics and English teacher, Founder Tyler was an active member of Alpha Zeta chapter in Baltimore, Maryland.

Viola Tyler Goings : Viola Tyler graduated from Howard University with a teaching degree and a major in math. She taught school in Ohio for many years and was always very active in community affairs.

Fannie Pettie Watts : Fannie Pettie graduated from Howard with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education and taught junior and senior high schools in Savannah, Georgia. She was credited with organizing two additional Zeta chapters and had active membership in Delta Alpha Zeta chapter.

First Initiates

Although there were five Founders of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., there were many women who were initially interested but did not become a part of the founding group. Many feared the high academic standards they would need to meet to become a part of this new organization, others could not afford the initiation fee that appears nominal by today’s standards. However, soon after the light of Zeta shone clearly through our Five Pea rls, there were twenty-five women eager to join the Zeta movement. Of these twenty-five, only four – Gladys Warrington, Harriet Dorsey, Pauline Phillips and Nellie Singfield – went on to be initiated as a part of the second pledge class. Zeta Phi Beta took top scholastic honors on the Howard University campus when a member of this second pledge class, Pauline Phillips, graduated summa cum laude, thus setting a precedent of academic excellence still expected of Zeta members to this day.

Zeta Phi Beta’s mission is to foster the ideals of community service, scholarship, sisterly love, and Finer Womanhood. Meet Zeta Beta Zeta Chapter

Six women chartered Zeta Beta Zeta Chapter in the Flint community in 1959, becoming the second graduate chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated in the state of Michigan.

Among the members was Triumphant Soror Frances E. Faithful, the daughter of Triumphant Founder Myrtle Tyler Faithful and niece of Triumphant Founder Viola Tyler Goings. The other charter members were Soror Precious Buckner, Soror Connie Fraction, Soror Lelia Bryant, Soror Olivia Murdock and Soror Juanita Watson.

As this is the Centennial year, we wish to acknowledge the contributions of our past presidents: Triumphant Soror Frances E. Faithful, 1959-1961; Soror Precious Petross Buckner, 1961-1963; Soror Catherine Burton, 1963-1965; Triumphant Soror Lonnie Roquemore, 1967-1969; Soror W. Cosedena Thomas Guinn, 1969-1971; Triumphant Soror Odessa Jackson, 1971-1973; Triumphant Soror Alberta Jones, 1973-1975; Triumphant Soror Bettye G. Ware, 1975-1977; Dr. Ruth H. Buckner, 1977-1979; and Soror W. Cosedena Thomas Guinn, 1979-1981.

Other presidents were: Soror Ruth N. Boone, 1981-1983; Soror Rose Murphy, 1983-1985; Triumphant Soror Bettye G. Ware, 1985-1987; Soror Sherra Davis, 1987- 1989; Triumphant Soror Cassandra Bronson, 1989-1991; Soror Bessie Evans, 1991-1993; Soror Edna Rubin, 1993-1995; Soror Linda Thompson, 1995-1997; Dr. Leatha Hayes, 1997-1999; Soror Mary A. Current officers

Our officers are Centennial Basileus Trishanda Williams, Basileus Advisor Soror Elner Taylor, First Anti-Basileus Karen Utsey, Second Anti-Basileus Maria Boyd-Springer, Third Anti-Basileus Yolanda Collins, Tamias Jessica Banks, Tamias-Grammateus Kandi Thomas, Grammateus Jannora Lauderdale, Corresponding Grammateus Tracey Jackson, Phylacter Davina Whitaker, Epistoleus Pamela Hawkins and Antapokritis Sena Bell. The chapter had 36 members as of August 2020.

Community Involvement

ZBZ sponsors annual events such as Finer Womanhood, Founders’ Day, Scholarship fundraisers; and supports many community outreach programs, including Youth Leadership, Big Brothers Big Sisters, YWCA and Stepping for Babies baby shower. Our chapter maintains a Stork’s Nest at Flint Southwestern Classical Academy.

Zeta Beta Zeta Chapter is especially proud of our Sisters in Service program where we recognized the community service of the four sororities of the National Pan-Hellenic Council. It was an honor to have Past International President and CBS “The Talk” co-host Sheryl Underwood as our host. The event took place on Nov. 4, 2017.

On Feb. 13, 2016, Zeta Beta Zeta hosted a water drive that saw Sorors and our Sigma brothers from across Michigan and Ohio, as well as the city of Chicago, bring vans filled with water to our community. Our chapter augmented that with distributing water filters and water dispensers to 200 or more families.

A second water drive was held on Aug. 17, 2019 in partnership with the Michigan State Organization Legacy Club. It was needed because Flint residents were still dealing with not having clean water to drink, bathe and cook. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Iota Beta Sigma Chapter; Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; and Zeta Amicae from Flint and Oak Park helped us pass out the water.

The Flint water crisis has been raging since April 2014 when the city changed from a treated water source in Detroit to using water from the Flint River, which has been an unofficial dumping site for treated and untreated refuse from local industries.

Youth Auxiliaries

Zeta Beta Zeta Chapter has a flourishing youth auxiliary with four Pearlettes, two Amicettes and eight Archonettes. Serving as advisors are Sorors Jannora Lauderdale, Jessica Banks, Yolanda Collins, Kandi Thomas and Tomika Russell. Our youth have participated in workshops on human trafficking, self-improvement and financial education, and hosted some of their own. One taught youth how to save money; a camp sought to get girls to pursue science, technology, engineering and math careers. The young ladies also do service projects, such as participating in Making Strides Breast Cancer Walk, providing personal items to and serve food for the North End Soup Kitchen in Flint and holding a school supply drive annually.

Undergraduate Chapter - Lambda Pi

Our undergraduate chapter was founded Feb. 10, 1995 with five members. They were associate members of ZBZ before the charter was established; that's when they got their official name. Lambda Pi Chapter was chartered in 1997. The charter members are: Sorors Chelan (Pea) Taylor, Yolanda (Dantzler) Collins, Therasa (Simpson) Martin, Keesha (Hankins) Holbrook and Meka (Vaughn) Young. This Flint citywide chapter serves University of Michigan-Flint, Baker College and Kettering University.

Zeta Amicae

The Zeta Beta Zeta Amicae Auxiliary of Flint was organized in 1966 and received its first charter in 1967. In 1968, Zeta Beta Zeta Chapter officially established its Amicae Auxiliary. The late Mrs. Odell Broadway was the group’s first president. In 2018, Zeta Beta Zeta Amicae celebrated their 50th anniversary.

A celebration featured speakers and dinner. It was a time for Zeta Beta Zeta Chapter to fellowship with then Michigan State Organization Director Angela Philmore; MSO Amicae Coordinator Friend Rosetta; Amicae throughout Michigan; Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated, Iota Beta Sigma Chapter; members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council-Flint; family; and friends.

Presently, the Zeta Beta Zeta Amicae has made a strong presence in the city of Flint through aiding ZBZ at the North End Soup Kitchen. It has provided personal hygiene packets to the homeless, participated in Zeta Beta Zeta’s Centennial Founders’ Day program, and supported community activities and scholarships to help Black students. Zeta Amicae have also partnered with Friend Davina Whitaker to support Holmes Stem Academy, Flint, for Adopt-A-School.

The Zeta Amicae contribute $100 annually to Bethune Cookman College in Daytona Beach, Fla. Then, every December for the last four years, Zeta Amicae have worked with the Archonettes teen auxiliary by introducing them to community service opportunities at Grace Emmanuel Baptist Church through the annual toys and food giveaway in Flint.

Currently, ZBZ Zeta Amicae have 11 financial members. They are: Amicae Tiny Presnall, President; Amicae Annie Duncan, Vice President; Amicae Glenna Gates, Secretary; Amicae Barbara Townsel, Treasurer; Amicae Mildred Hood, Financial Secretary; Amicae Earline Hawkins, Parliamentarian; Amicae Larlean Campbell, Chaplain; and Friend Judy Thornton, Friend Mildred Bowman, Amicae Ore Lee Love, and Amicae Betty Tipper. Advisors are Friend Davina Whitaker and Friend Karen Utsey.

Zeta Leaders & Trailblazers

Some of our members have risen to high heights in Zeta. Soror Elner Taylor served as past Michigan State Director and MSO Executive Board Chair. She was appointed Great Lakes Region Director in July 2020. She is also Resident Manager of Birch Haven in Idlewild, Mich. Soror Amie Garner is the Michigan State Organization Male Network Coordinator and Soror Jannora Lauderdale serves as Centennial Service Representative.

Zeta Beta Zeta Chapter has nine Zeta Doves. They are: Sorors Precious Buckner, Doris Carroll, Vera Birch, Ruth Boones, Shirley Collins, Mildred Jackson, Iris B. Marable, Life Member Soror Elner Taylor and Triumphant Soror Barbara Veasley, who passed away April 26, 2020.

Welcoming the Gamma Chi Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

On February 11th, 2024, the Gamma Chi Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was chartered at the University of Georgia. 11 women chartered the chapter just one week before their official new member presentation which took place on February 17th, 2024 at the Tate Student Center.

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated is one of the nine organizations that make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council.

“Returning to campus is a long-awaited homecoming for Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated, signifying a new beginning and an opportunity to make a lasting impact on UGA’s campus,” said President Ezra Lewis. “It means so much to the charter members of the Gamma Chi chapter that we get to contribute to the long and rich history of Zetas and we take that responsibility seriously.”

Although Zeta Phi Beta has only been on campus for a few months, they have been very active within the community. Some of the ways the chapter has served include the UGA Dawg Day of Service, participating in numerous Black History Month Programs, undergoing leadership training, performing at the NPHC Night basketball game, and doing street cleanups in Athens.

“Looking towards the future, we commit to uplifting Black and minority issues at UGA, weaving advocacy into the fabric of the Zeta vision to be a community-conscious, action-oriented service organization, both on campus and off campus,” said Lewis. “We also commit to providing safe spaces and support to all the people that we have the opportunity to impact. We are very excited for this opportunity to make a difference and show UGA what Zeta Phi Beta is all about!”
