Transcribe now

To transcribe a video, you’ll need to use an extension, converter, or third-party tool. I spent tons of hours researching the best methods to transcribe YouTube videos to text . Here are 5 ways that will help you quickly convert YouTube videos into text.

[Method 1] How to Transcribe a YouTube Video With its Own Free Feature

Advantages:

It’s a quick way to get a transcription

Ability to skip to different parts of the transcription and play the audio.

Disadvantages:

Not very accurate

No ability to edit or highlight text

Not available for every video

First, we’ll look at how to transcribe a YouTube video to text using Google’s built-in algorithm. This doesn’t work great for every video. However, we’ll look at one where it works well enough for this example.

Step 1:  Go to  YouTube  and click on the video you want to transcribe.

Go to YouTube

‍ Step 2:  Click on the  ‘...’  on the bottom right of the video.

Click on the ‘...’

Step 3:  Click  ‘Show transcript’ .

Click ‘Show transcript’.

You will then see a  transcript  of the video appear on the right.

see a transcript of the video

Nice work! Not every video on YouTube has a  ‘Show transcript ’ button. If you want to transcribe one of those videos, you’ll want to try some of our other methods below.

[Method 2] How to Transcribe a YouTube Video With Google Docs

Ability to edit text after transcription.

Possible for many videos.

Very inaccurate and slow.

Requires a microphone and good sound to get a decent transcription.

Requires lots of editing to get it right.

Here let's look at how to transcribe a YouTube video with Google Docs . If there is not a microphone built into your computer or laptop, you’ll need an external microphone.

The quality of your transcript will depend on 3 factors:

How close your microphone is to the speaker.

How clear the audio in the video is.

How fast Google Docs can keep up with the audio.

Step 1:  Go to  Google Docs  and click on  ‘Blank ’.

click on ‘Blank’

Step 2:  Click on  ‘Tools’  on the toolbar and you'll see  ‘Voice typing’ .

Step 5:  Wait for Google Docs to transcribe the audio. The length of the video will determine how long it takes to transcribe the video.

You’ll need a fairly sophisticated mic setup to achieve a decent transcription with this method. If this is all you have your laptop speakers and your laptop microphone, you’ll be doing a lot of editing.  Let’s look at some other methods.

4 Ways to Convert YouTube Video to Text or Transcript

From the down and dirty to the more accurate

Author avatar

Whether you’re uploading a YouTube video for the first time, or already have a channel populated with videos, you may want to consider converting those YouTube videos to text. Why? Well, there are several reasons creators may want to do this.

For instance, you may want to repurpose your YouTube video content and use it on your blog. If you’re creating a gaming video for your YouTube gaming channel, captions can help your viewers make sense of the commentary that could sometimes get buried under the background noise.

Transcripts and captions also increase your video’s accessibility for the disabled and help users facing issues with playing sound on YouTube . Plus, captions can help improve a viewer’s experience with your video even if they don’t have a disability.

4 Ways to Convert YouTube Video to Text or Transcript image

The good thing is, converting YouTube videos to text isn’t very difficult. There are four ways of converting a YouTube video to text or transcript.

1. Convert YouTube Video to Text Using the Built-In Transcription Tool

YouTube has a built-in tool for converting your YouTube videos to text. It’s free and built right into the interface, so it’s only logical that this is the option you’d want to use as a go-to in most cases.

YouTube generates captions using its speech recognition tech, and you can also extract the transcript once the captions are generated. However, the accuracy can be a little off, so you may need to make some changes in the text.

  • Log into your YouTube account and head over to YouTube Studio. Select Subtitles from the left sidebar.

  • Select a video you want to convert to text. On the next screen, choose a language and select Confirm .

Notice how the text lacks punctuation. Words are also all lowercase. You’ll need to fix the punctuation and capitalization manually.

You can also view the transcript once it’s published from the video page. Go to the video page and select the ellipsis at the bottom of the video. Select Open transcript and you’ll see the transcript at the right of the video.

It’s always a good idea to do a quick grammar check on transcripts generated by YouTube, because they’ll almost always need some fixing. If YouTube failed to generate subtitles for a particular video, it’s probably because your video has poor audio quality or in a language not supported by YouTube.

2. Convert YouTube Video to Text Using Third-Party Transcription Tools

Automatic transcription tools are one of the fastest, most efficient ways of converting a YouTube video to text. You can use them to transcribe pretty much everything from videos to audio-only content like podcasts.

There’s only one caveat, though. Most decent transcription tools cost money. They either charge a monthly or annual subscription fee, or charge a per-minute or per-hour rate.

If you want to take one of these tools for a spin before you commit by investing in a subscription, you can use the ones that offer a trial. For instance, you could try Temi. It allows free transcription for audio of up to 45 minutes.

  • Go to Temi’s website and select the Select audio/video file button.

  • Let Temi process your file. This could take a while depending on how long the file you’ve uploaded is.

  • Once it completes processing, Temi will ask for your email. The transcript will be sent to you over an email.

The benefit of using a good video to text tool is the accuracy. They can transcribe videos with a clear voice and little to no background noise with roughly 90% (or more in some cases) accuracy.

3. Convert YouTube Video to Text Using Video Editors

When you use a video editor for polishing your YouTube video , it’s possible that the editor also has a transcription tool. Of course, not every video editor has video-to-text functionality. But you can always use an editor just to convert YouTube videos to text, or do a little more if you so wish.

For instance, VEED has a video-to-text tool that allows you to generate transcriptions for your YouTube videos.

  • Go to VEED’s video-to-text page and select the Choose Video button.

Convert YouTube Video to Text Using Video Editors image

  • Enter the link to your YouTube video in the bottom field in the dialog box, and select the page icon at the right end of the field.

  • Let the tool import the video. When it’s done, you’ll need to choose Auto Subtitle to continue.

  • Then, select a language that the audio is in and select Start .

  • On the next screen, you’ll see the subtitles for your YouTube video and a few other video editing options, in case you need to do some trims or splits on the video.

4. Convert YouTube Video to Text Using Google Docs

Did you know that Google Docs can also help you convert YouTube videos to text? It has a built-in voice dictation tool that can get the job done. However, the option is only available on Chromium-based browsers like Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge.

You can go about using the voice typing tool in two ways.

First , you can turn on the Voice typing feature, play the video like you normally would, and let Google Docs do the rest.

However, there’s a possibility that there are some disturbances in the background or that the audio echos. To remedy this, you’ll need to tweak a few settings on your PC first.

That’s where the second method comes in. You can change the sound settings on your PC so it will internally listen to the audio without you having to use the speakers.

Since the first method is a subset of the second method, we’ll illustrate the second method here. If you want to use the first method, start from step 3.

  • On Windows 11, press Ctrl + I to launch the Settings app, navigate to System > Sound > All sound devices > Stereo Mix , and select Allow .

Convert YouTube Video to Text Using Google Docs image

  • Next, return to the Settings home screen and navigate to System > Sound > Volume mixer . Select the Input device as Stereo Mix from the dropdown.

Convert YouTube Video to Text Using Google Docs image 2

At this point, the sound from whatever you play on your computer will be directly relayed to the tool that is using your microphone—Google Docs in this case.

  • Next, open a new Google Doc and select Tools > Voice typing .

Convert YouTube Video to Text Using Google Docs image 3

  • You’ll now see a mic icon appear on the document. Select the mic icon when you want Google Docs to start listening and transcribing. Then, play the YouTube video you want to convert to text.

Convert YouTube Video to Text Using Google Docs image 4

Remember that you can’t navigate away from the Google Docs tab while you’re using the tool, or it will stop transcribing.

If you’re using the stereo mix method, you’ll only need to play the video. But if you’re using your speakers, make sure you don’t place them too close or too far away from the mic.

If possible, do a trial run by recording a few minutes of audio from your speakers beforehand to make sure the voice isn’t too loud or slow. If it is, adjust the placement of the speakers and the mic. The better the quality of the audio, the more accurate will be the transcription.

Hopefully, you were about to convert your YouTube videos to text using one of these methods. You can also hire someone to manually transcribe videos for you, but that can sometimes be expensive and time-consuming. YouTube has become a treasure trove of diverse content, ranging from music videos to educational tutorials and everything in between. However, accessing this content offline can sometimes be challenging. In this article, we will explore various methods and techniques to efficiently download audio from YouTube videos, allowing users to enjoy their favorite content anytime, anywhere, without the need for an internet connection. We’ll also explore the best YouTube video editor.

What is a YouTube audio downloader?

A YouTube audio downloader is a tool designed specifically to extract audio tracks from YouTube videos. These tools typically allow users to save the audio in various formats such as MP3, WAV, or AAC for offline listening convenience or convert videos between formats. These YouTube audio downloaders can be web-based tools or desktop software.

Use cases of downloading YouTube audio

Downloading YouTube audio has become increasingly common, serving a multitude of purposes ranging from personal enjoyment to educational use. However, within this widespread practice lie ethical considerations that warrant scrutiny. While some use cases of downloading YouTube audio align with ethical standards, others delve into murky ethical waters. Let’s break down the top ethical use cases of downloading YouTube audio.

  • Personal use: Downloading YouTube audio for personal use, such as listening offline or creating a private collection, may be permissible under certain circumstances, depending on the jurisdiction’s laws and fair use provisions.
  • Educational purposes: Downloading YouTube audio for educational purposes, such as research, criticism, or commentary, may be considered fair use in some cases, especially if it contributes to the creation of new content or facilitates learning.
  • Repurposing with explicit permission: If you have explicit permission from the copyright holder or the content creator to download and use their audio, then it is legal to do so, provided you adhere to any terms or conditions specified by the rights holder.
  • Public domain material: YouTube audio that is in the public domain or licensed under Creative Commons may be legally downloaded and used for various purposes, as long as you comply with the terms of the respective license.

Problems with downloading YouTube audio

The act of downloading audio from YouTube has become a widespread practice, offering users the convenience of accessing their favorite content offline. However, beneath the surface of this seemingly innocuous activity lies a myriad of problems that can arise. Here are just a few downsides users should be aware of:

  • Distribution of copyrighted material: Sharing downloaded YouTube audio files without permission violates copyright laws and can lead to legal consequences for distributing copyrighted material without authorization.
  • Monetary loss for content creators: By downloading YouTube audio illegally, content creators are deprived of potential revenue from views and ad placements, resulting in financial losses.
  • Violation of YouTube’s terms of service: Downloading YouTube audio against the platform’s terms of service constitutes a breach of contract, which may lead to the suspension or termination of your YouTube account.

Is it safe to download YouTube audio?

Downloading YouTube audio can be safe if done through reputable and legal means, such as using authorized YouTube audio download services or applications that comply with copyright laws and respect YouTube’s terms of service. However, using unauthorized or dubious downloaders may pose risks such as exposure to malware, pop-ups, adware, or copyright infringement. It’s essential to prioritize safety by choosing legitimate download services, ensuring the security of your device, and respecting copyright laws to avoid potential legal consequences or security breaches.

What to look for in a YouTube audio downloader

When choosing a YouTube audio downloader, consider the following factors:

  • Compatibility: Ensure that the downloader is compatible with your operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, etc.) and web browser (Chrome, Firefox, etc.).
  • Supported formats: Look for a downloader that supports various video/audio formats such as MP3, AAC, WAV, MP4, etc., to ensure compatibility with your devices and preferences.
  • Audio quality options: Check if the downloader offers options for selecting the audio quality, allowing you to choose between different bitrates for better sound quality.
  • Batch downloading: If you plan to download multiple videos in a playlist at once, opt for a downloader that supports batch downloading to save time and effort.
  • Download speed: Consider the speed at which the downloader fetches and downloads the audio files from YouTube. Faster download speeds mean less waiting time.
  • User interface: A user-friendly interface can make the downloading process smoother and more efficient. Look for a downloader with an intuitive interface that is easy to navigate.

How to turn your voice memos into text

Voice notes can be more useful when they're transcribed.

By David Nield | Published Feb 21, 2024 8:01 AM EST

The voice notes you've recorded don't have to stay in audio form.

Voice notes can be a handy way of recording ideas and reminders while on the go. But in audio form, they have limitations: You can’t easily search through them, and you can’t quickly check them when you need to be quiet (in the library, for example, or next to a sleeping partner).

This is where transcribing comes in, enabling you to have both the voice recording and the written text available. It’s useful not just for recording your own musings but also for interviews, meetings, and other scenarios when typing is burdensome.

You’ve got plenty of apps to choose from for the job, and you don’t necessarily have to pay for the privilege either. We’ve rounded up the best voice note transcription tools that we’ve come across, along with the features you need to know, and how you can get started.

Google Keep (Android, iOS, web)

screenshot of google keep with microphone icon

Google’s note-taking app does a fine job of recording your voice memos and attaching the text at the same time, and the accuracy of the transcriptions is impressive. Google Keep voice notes can be accessed in the app on Android , iOS , and the web , but bear in mind that you can only create voice recordings from the mobile apps, not on desktop.

screenshot of google keep with 'plus sign' for how to add audio

To create a new note using your voice, tap the little microphone icon at the bottom of the app interface, then start talking. When you’ve finished, your note pops up on screen, with the text on top and the embedded audio underneath (tap the play button to hear it). You can then access the usual note options for adding a title, changing its color, and so on.

Aiko (iOS, macOS)

screenshot of Aiko app with red microphone icon

When it comes to Apple’s own apps, you can’t automatically transcribe text from a voice note in either the Notes or Voice Memos apps that come installed on your iPhone. However, you can use Aiko for iOS or macOS to convert recordings you’ve already made. It’s free to use, and powered by an AI engine from ChatGPT developer OpenAI. Your recordings are kept private on your device too.

When using the app on the iPhone, the opening screen gives you the choice of either recording voice notes directly into the app, or loading in clips that you’ve already created. After the transcription is completed, you’re able to copy the text to the clipboard, send it to a different app, or search through it with just a few taps on screen.

AudioPen (web)

screenshot of audiopen with orange recording active

There are no native mobile or desktop apps available for AudioPen at the moment, but the web app is beautifully assembled in its intuitiveness and simplicity, and you can use it on Android and iOS too. Just click or tap on the record button, and start talking—your clip will then be quickly transcribed while you wait, and added to your bank of collected notes.

You can copy the text to the clipboard or turn it into a shareable image suitable for social media. If you pay for AudioPen Prime ($75 a year), you get extra export options, the ability to edit your notes, support for note tags and folders, and the option to upload audio recordings. On a free plan, your recorded notes are limited to three minutes in length.

Pixel Recorder (Android)

Tech Hacks photo

Google Pixel phones come with a free Recorder app for Android that works well for recording voice notes and adding transcriptions automatically. Among the useful features it offers are the ability to identify different speakers in the transcript, and tools for easily trimming recordings.

You won’t be able to use Recorder on non-Pixel Android phones, but if you’re using a Samsung Galaxy handset, Samsung makes its own Samsung Voice Recorder app for Android . As with the Google equivalent, it’s super easy to get your voice notes recorded, with text transcriptions popping up alongside them as you talk.

screenshot of Otter

As you move up to the more professional audio transcription apps and services, you’ll typically need to pay more money, but you get more features in return. Otter for Android , iOS , and the web will make short work of longer recordings, and is suitable for meetings, lectures, and interviews, as well as personal voice notes you make yourself.

You can do all sorts of things with your recordings when you’ve made them, including leveraging AI to pick out certain details. As a free user, you’re limited to 300 minutes of audio per month and 30 minutes per clip. If you need more, paid plans start at $16.99 per month, with bonuses such as enhanced searches.

Supreme Court Seems Wary of State Laws Regulating Social Media Platforms

The tech industry argues that laws in Florida and Texas, prompted by conservative complaints about censorship, violate the First Amendment. The court’s decision could fundamentally alter the nature of speech on the internet.

A person in dark clothing walking past the steps of the Supreme Court.

By Adam Liptak

Reporting from Washington

  • Feb. 26, 2024

The Supreme Court seemed skeptical on Monday of laws in Florida and Texas that bar major social media companies from making editorial judgments about which messages to allow.

The laws were enacted in an effort to shield conservative voices on the sites, but a decision by the court, expected by June, will almost certainly be its most important statement on the scope of the First Amendment in the internet era, with broad political and economic implications.

A ruling that tech platforms have no editorial discretion to decide which posts to allow would expose users to a greater variety of viewpoints but almost certainly amplify the ugliest aspects of the digital age, including hate speech and disinformation.

Though a ruling in favor of big platforms like Facebook and YouTube appeared likely, the court also seemed poised to return the cases to the lower courts to answer questions about how the laws apply to sites that do not seem to moderate their users’ speech in the same way, like Gmail, Venmo, Uber and Etsy.

The justices, over almost four hours of arguments, differed about whether the laws, which have been blocked for now, should go into effect in the meantime. But a majority seemed inclined to keep them on hold while the litigation moves forward. Several justices said that the states violated the First Amendment by telling a handful of major platforms that they could not moderate their users’ posts, drawing distinctions between government censorship prohibited by the First Amendment and actions by private companies to determine what speech to include on their sites.

“I have a problem with laws that are so broad that they stifle speech just on their face,” Justice Sonia Sotomayor said.

Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh read a sentence from a 1976 campaign finance decision that has long been a touchstone for him. “The concept that government may restrict the speech of some elements of our society in order to enhance the relative voice of others is wholly foreign to the First Amendment,” he said, indicating that he rejected the states’ argument that they may regulate the fairness of public debate in private settings.

“I wonder,” Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. said, “since we’re talking about the First Amendment, whether our first concern should be with the state regulating what, you know, we have called the modern public square.”

Henry C. Whitaker, Florida’s solicitor general, responded that “the state has an interest, a First Amendment interest, in promoting and ensuring the free dissemination of ideas.”

Justice Elena Kagan said the major platforms had good reasons to reject posts inciting insurrection, endangering public health and spreading hate speech. “Why isn’t that a First Amendment judgment?” she asked.

The court’s three most conservative members — Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel A. Alito Jr. and Neil M. Gorsuch — seemed sympathetic to the state laws. All three said phrases like “content moderation” were euphemisms for censorship.

When the discussion turned to less prominent sites, the justices across the ideological spectrum were troubled by the lack of information about them in the record before the court. Several indicated that they might analyze the First Amendment question differently depending on the platform.

Justice Kagan asked whether states could tell services like Venmo, Dropbox and Uber that they may not discriminate on the basis of their users’ viewpoints.

“Wouldn’t that be all right?” she asked Paul D. Clement, a lawyer for the challengers.

Mr. Clement said no, responding that all of those services “are still in the expressive business,” meaning that speech is part of their core activities in ways not true of, say, a gas station or ice cream stand.

Other justices asked about email and messaging services.

“Does Gmail have a First Amendment right to delete, let’s say, Tucker Carlson’s or Rachel Maddow’s Gmail accounts if they don’t agree with his or her viewpoints?” Justice Alito asked Mr. Clement.

Mr. Clement responded that the service “might be able to do that,” adding that such questions had not been the focus of the litigation.

He added that forbidding the platforms to make distinctions based on viewpoint would destroy their businesses.

“If you have to be viewpoint-neutral,” he said, “that means that if you have materials that are involved in suicide prevention, you also have to have materials that advocate suicide promotion. Or, if you have materials on your site that are pro-Semitic, then you have to let on materials onto your site that are antisemitic. And that is a formula for making these websites very unpopular to both users and advertisers.”

The laws’ supporters said they were an attempt to combat what they called Silicon Valley censorship, through which major social media companies had deleted posts expressing conservative views. The laws were prompted in part by the decisions of some platforms to bar President Donald J. Trump after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

The laws, from Florida and Texas, differ in their details. Florida’s prevents the platforms from permanently barring candidates for political office in the state, while Texas’ prohibits the platforms from removing any content based on a user’s viewpoint.

“To generalize just a bit,” Judge Andrew S. Oldham wrote in a decision upholding the Texas law , the Florida law “prohibits all censorship of some speakers,” while the one from Texas “prohibits some censorship of all speakers” when based on the views they express.

The two trade associations challenging the state laws — NetChoice and the Computer & Communications Industry Association — said that the actions Judge Oldham called censorship were editorial choices protected by the First Amendment, which generally prohibits government restrictions on speech based on content and viewpoint.

The groups said that social media companies were entitled to the same constitutional protections enjoyed by newspapers, which are generally free to publish what they like without government interference.

Justice Kavanaugh appeared to embrace that position, asking Mr. Whitaker, the lawyer representing Florida, whether states could tell publishing houses, printing presses, movie theaters, bookstores and newsstands what to feature.

Mr. Whitaker said that newspapers and bookstores are engaged in “inherently expressive conduct,” while “our whole point is that these social media platforms are not like those.”

He said that, indeed, the platforms were common carriers required to transmit everyone’s messages and that the Florida law protected free speech by ensuring that users have access to many points of view.

Several justices said it was hard to reconcile the platforms’ arguments on Monday with what they had said last year in cases concerning Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which protects social media companies from liability for what their users post.

In those cases, Justice Thomas said, the platforms maintained that they were merely conduits for others’ speech. “Now you’re saying that you are engaged in editorial discretion and expressive conduct,” he told Mr. Clement. “Doesn’t that seem to undermine your Section 230 arguments?”

Mr. Clement responded that a key part of the provision was meant to protect platforms from liability for making editorial judgments

Federal appeals courts reached conflicting conclusions in 2022 about the constitutionality of the two laws.

A unanimous three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit largely upheld a preliminary injunction blocking Florida’s law.

“Social media platforms exercise editorial judgment that is inherently expressive,” Judge Kevin C. Newsom wrote for the panel. “When platforms choose to remove users or posts, deprioritize content in viewers’ feeds or search results or sanction breaches of their community standards, they engage in First Amendment-protected activity.”

But a divided three-judge panel of the Fifth Circuit reversed a lower court’s order blocking the Texas law.

“We reject the platforms’ attempt to extract a freewheeling censorship right from the Constitution’s free speech guarantee,” Judge Oldham wrote for the majority. “The platforms are not newspapers. Their censorship is not speech.”

The Biden administration supported the social media companies in the two cases, Moody v. NetChoice , No. 22-277, and NetChoice v. Paxton , No. 22-555.

The Supreme Court blocked the Texas law in 2022 while the case moved forward by a 5-to-4 vote.

Justice Alito wrote that the issues were so novel and significant that the Supreme Court would have to consider them at some point. He added that he was skeptical of the argument that the social media companies have editorial discretion protected by the First Amendment the way newspapers and other traditional publishers do.

“It is not at all obvious,” he wrote, “how our existing precedents, which predate the age of the internet, should apply to large social media companies.”

Because of an editing error, an earlier version of this article misstated the details of the social media laws enacted by two conservative states. Florida’s prevents the platforms from permanently barring candidates for political office in the state while Texas’ prohibits the platforms from removing any content based on a user’s viewpoint, not the reverse.
