- PhD studies
PhD courses
The PhD programme includes coursework of approximately one semester of study, totaling 30 ECTS.
There are “generic” (general) courses arranged at Graduate School of Social Sciences . The topics of these courses are relevant to all of the faculty's PhD students. The students are to gain general competence in, e.g. pedagogy, communications, writing scientific papers in English, etc. The sociology courses, on the other hand, are typically offered by the department. See the website: Research – PhD student – PhD courses. They are usually first announced by e-mail and also posted at www.phdcourses.dk.
Taking a generic introductory course and a sociological project design course in the first semester of the program is mandatory. The department regularly offers courses in sociological theory and methods (sometimes in cooperation with the Sociology departments at Aalborg and Lund University).
PhD students may also take courses at other departments and universities, both nationally ( https://phdcourses.dk/ ) and internationally.
Further, PhD students are encouraged to participate in the suggestion and planning of course activities. This ensures that the specialised courses offered resonate with the interests of the PhD students, while providing the opportunity for the students to become part of an international academic network and build their capacity to organise academic events. On KUnet under the department you can find a description on how to plan a PhD course.

PhD courses
The PhD students take half a year’s worth of PhD courses beyond the master's degree requirement. These courses provide specialised knowledge about the dissertation topic as well as generic competencies within research, teaching and knowledge dissemination. The courses can be of shorter or longer duration, and can be offered in direct connection with the programme, by the Graduate School, by national and international graduate schools, or by other relevant higher education institutions.
For some years, the large majority of PhD courses have been offered by the two national graduate schools within the fields of Economics and Finance. These two schools are characterized by offering courses of high academic standard, covering broader foundational courses taught by the best Danish researchers as well as narrower topics courses drawing on leading Danish and international researchers. Each school offers many courses in its respective field to nicely meet the PhD students’ course demand.

Copenhagen Center for Social Data Science (SODAS)
New phd position at sodas, phd position at the copenhagen center for social data science (sodas), university of copenhagen, with a focus on investigating the role of adults’ curiosity for decisions, behavior, and life outcomes, apply here: https://employment.ku.dk/phd/show=161571.
Who are we looking for? The Copenhagen Center for Social Data Science (SODAS; https://sodas.ku.dk/ ), Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Copenhagen, invites applications for a PhD position (100%, 36 months). Supported by the Tryg Foundation, the chosen candidate will primarily work in a project related to curiosity in children and adults, together with a PhD student at the Department of Psychology, a post-doc (at SODAS), Guido Makransky (Department of Psychology), and Ingo Zettler (SODAS and Department of Psychology).
The position is available from 1 July 2024, but a sooner or later starting date is also possible.
The chosen candidate will be part of the research project “Shedding New Light on Curiosity in Children and Adults”. The main goal of this project is to generate new knowledge that can support children and adults in having a positive life both mentally and socially, by increasing the understanding of: 1) how to best conceptualize and measure curiosity in children and adults; 2) how interventions can foster individual’s curiosity levels; and 3) the role of (different aspects of) curiosity for important outcomes. The project has three intertwined work packages focusing on psychometrics; Virtual Reality (VR) measurement and interventions with children; as well as survey, experimental, and register data studies with adults.
The chosen candidate will be primarily responsible for organizing and conducting the studies with adults. The chosen candidate is expected to publish scientific articles in international journals as well as to present findings at national and international conferences. In general, the position is research-focused, and funding is available for conducting studies, conference attendances, and a research visit such that the chosen candidate can start building their international network and research expertise. For the chosen candidate, there will be possibilities to influence the project and develop new project ideas within the project frame. In addition, the chosen candidate will also be asked to fulfill other work obligations (typically teaching or supervising thesis students) to a small degree in the overall period.
Applicants should have a master degree in computational social science, social data science, psychology, another social science discipline, or adjacent disciplines. Next to interest in conducting research on curiosity, applicants should have experience with conducting survey and/or experimental studies, including quantitative analyses. Having experience with register data is an additional strength, but no precondition. It is expected that applicants will publish in internationally recognized scientific journals in English, and that the chosen candidate will contribute continuously with their collaboration skills to the interdisciplinary, international research team. High proficiency in spoken and written English is thus a requirement.
What do we offer? The chosen candidate will become part of the SODAS research environment and active doctoral program with about 20 PhD students. SODAS is an interdisciplinary research, teaching, and impact center, combining traditional social science theories and methods with novel data science methods and paradigms. In collaboration with partners in Denmark and abroad, SODAS is home to research projects funded by, among others, the European Research Council (ERC) as well as both independent and private Danish research foundations. SODAS hosts the English-language Social Data Science (SDS) Master degree program at the Faculty of Social Sciences.
The working language at SODAS is English. Our community maintains strong collaborative relationships with all Departments at the Faculty of the Social Sciences (Anthropology, Economics, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology), the Department of Computer Science at the University of Copenhagen, as well as internationally renowned, computational social science research groups and centers in the Copenhagen area, including the Networks, Data, and Society (NERDS) group at the IT University of Copenhagen, the Social Complexity Lab at the Technical University of Denmark, and the Pioneer Centre for AI which operates across all Danish universities.

Despite tremendous efforts in the past decades, relationships among main avian lineages remain heavily debated without a clear resolution. Discrepancies have been attributed to diversity of species sampled, phylogenetic method, and the choice of genomic regions 1–3 . Here, we address these issues by analyzing genomes of 363 bird species 4 (218 taxonomic families, 92% of total). Using intergenic regions and coalescent methods, we present a well-supported tree but also a remarkable degree of discordance. The tree confirms that Neoaves experienced rapid radiation at or near the Cretaceous–Paleogene (K–Pg) boundary. Sufficient loci rather than extensive taxon sampling were more effective in resolving difficult nodes. Remaining recalcitrant nodes involve species that challenge modeling due to extreme GC content, variable substitution rates, incomplete lineage sorting, or complex evolutionary events such as ancient hybridization. Assessment of the impacts of different genomic partitions showed high heterogeneity across the genome. We discovered sharp increases in effective population size, substitution rates, and relative brain size following the K–Pg extinction event, supporting the hypothesis that emerging ecological opportunities catalyzed the diversification of modern birds. The resulting phylogenetic estimate offers novel insights into the rapid radiation of modern birds and provides a taxon-rich backbone tree for future comparative studies.

The Integrated MSc and PhD programme (3+5)
The Integrated MSc and PhD programme makes it possible to integrate the MSc programmes’ optional programme elements and the writing of the PhD dissertation. This allows students and their supervisors more time for the research element of the PhD programme.
The former 4+4 PhD is now a part of the Integrated PhD Scheme (3+5).
Admission requirements
The Integrated PhD programme is open to applicants who:
- have completed the Bachelors degree with a good result.
- are enrolled on an MSc programme offered by SCIENCE or have been offered admission to an MSc programme offered by SCIENCE
- can coordinate and integrate the remaining ECTS of their MSc programme with the proposed PhD programme.
- is qualified to be admitted to the PhD programme
- have not started writing the MSc thesis.
The academic content of the MSc programme must be related to the proposed PhD programme. Read more requirements in the programme description below.
Organisation of the Integrated MSc/PhD programme
The prescribed period of study for the integrated programme is five full-time equivalents (FTEs) (two for the MSc programme and three for the PhD programme). If, at commencement of the integrated 3+5 scheme, the student has passed one or more programme elements, the period of study is reduced correspondingly.
The 3+5 scheme is divided into two parts:
Part A: The student completes the MSc programme and concurrently completes one third of the PhD programme (one FTE). Part A is completed when the student completes the MSc programme and must be organized in such a way that the MSc programme is completed two years before completion of the entire integrated programme of study.
Part B : The student is a PhD student exclusively and completes the PhD programme in accordance with the approved PhD plan. Part B can be commenced once the student has completed the MSc programme (part A), and the regular assessments have been satisfactory, meaning that the student has lived up to the requirements in the PhD plan.

Uri college of nursing graduate programs ranked among nation’s best.
Doctor of Nursing Practice ranks 66 nationally; Master’s program remains in top 50
KINGSTON, R.I. — April 9, 2024 — The University of Rhode Island College of Nursing graduate programs are again ranked among the top of nursing colleges in the country, making an impressive year-over-year rise, according to the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings.
The College’s Doctor of Nursing Practice program is tied at number 66 of 354 nursing schools across the country with a DNP program, up from number 86 last year, according to the rankings released April 9. The College’s master’s program also continued its impressive performance in recent years. For the third year in a row, the program ranks among the top 50 in the nation, slotting in at number 48 among 603 nursing schools surveyed.
“We are committed to providing an excellent education to all our students, including our graduate students who benefit from our top-notch facilities and some of the best educators in their field,” said Dean Danny Willis . “Education is transformative, and students are not just a number to us. We get to know them and facilitate their professional and personal success. It is very rewarding to see the College’s efforts recognized on a national level.”
U.S. News & World Report , among the leading authorities in college and university rankings, surveyed 648 nursing schools with master’s or doctoral programs accredited by either the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The publication determined each school’s overall rank using 15 distinct ranking factors, including faculty credentials, student-to-faculty ratio, faculty research prowess and nursing practice experience, assessment scores from peer institutions, and more.
The URI College of Nursing met and exceeded the standards as it continues to increase its offerings at the undergraduate and graduate level. About one-third of the URI College of Nursing’s faculty members are recognized Fellows in national nursing organizations, including the American Academy of Nursing, for their distinguished academic achievements. Dozens of URI students were inducted in the Sigma Theta Tau honor society for nursing last year, and a handful were inducted into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. The number of faculty publications, funded external grants and committed gifts to the College have all increased over the last five years as the College continues to have major impacts on health and health care.
The advancements the College has made are obvious not only in the graduate programs, but in its undergraduate offerings as well. The College’s B.S. in Nursing program tied at number 67 out of 656 programs in the country for the second year in a row, in rankings released Sept. 17. The College has made an impressive rise in the rankings, climbing from number 96 just two years ago, the first year the publication ranked undergraduate programs, to 67 last year. According to U.S. News, rankings are generated through “ranking indicators” derived from reputation and/or data reported by each institution. For some programs, U.S. News evaluates key areas such as expert opinions in the field, opportunities for student engagement, resources for student support and career success, as well as faculty and student performance, in terms of existing credentials, research impact and metrics such as student job placement.
In addition to the graduate program rankings, in September 2023 U.S. News ranked USF as one of the nation’s top 50 public universities for the fifth consecutive year , and the university earned its highest ranking ever among all universities public or private.
