five essential leadership lessons pixabay yourwealthymind your wealthy mind

Mula kay Warren Bennis (“ On Becoming a Leader ”)

Isang “guiding vision” o pangarap .

Passion o Pagkahumaling .   “Do what you love” sabi nga nila.

Pagkamausisa at pagkatapang (curiosity and daring) .

Mula kay Stephen Covey (“ The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change ”)

leadership essay tagalog

Mula kay Marcus Buckingham at Curt Coffman (“ First, Break All the Rules: What the World’s Greatest Managers Do Differently ”)

leadership essay tagalog

Mula kay John Wooden (“ Wooden on Leadership: How to Create a Winning Organization ”)

leadership essay tagalog

School and the workplace became the second home for students and employees. It served as the residence of knowledge and source of income of individuals. From this found home, the school and the workplace may shape who we will be in the future. The role of an effective leader is crucial for this to happen.

An effective leader cultivates an environment that protects mental health. The Department of Labor and Employment mandates workplaces to implement mental health policies and programs following the Mental Health Act [1] . Likewise, the Department of Education launched a series of mental health and psychosocial programs this year to support learners, parents, and school personnel [2] .

Leaders, managers, and supervisors in organizations affect the mental health of their employees [3] . It is important to look at how Filipinos leadership impacts our mental health.

Filipino Leadership

Classic leadership literature abounds with examples of leaders’ aim to predict, categorize, classify, and control within organizations for every possible variable. The majority of research academe defines leadership as a behavior, a relationship, and in various cases, activity [4] .

Filipino leadership and Filipino management may appear to be misleading because Filipino culture is based on deeply ingrained indigenous core values. Filipino culture focuses on kinship, family, and social acceptance. Thus, Filipinos’ distinct leadership styles may include pakiramdam, takutan, kulit, and patsamba-tsamba, among others. Filipino leadership styles have a significant effect in the workplace setting, as well as in schools [5] , and may significantly affect one’s mental health. For example, leaders who use takutan as their leadership style may cause stress and anxiety among employees. These leaders have been taught earlier on that the best results are achieved by those who are toughest, driven, and demanding [6] .

Franco (1982), in his study, identified the different Pinoy management styles that are distinctly Filipino.

  • Management-by-Kayod and the Realist Manager. Kayod means working hard like an ant. These are the types of leaders who work day in and day out. Work is their pleasure in life. The characteristics of a manager like this include: when there is a problem, he immediately reacts to it, is an autocrat, and yields experience to ensure the organization’s success [7] .
  • Management-by-Libro and the Idealist Manager. Libro means book. Leaders who follow this management style prefer American management styles with technical jargon. They are characterized by reflecting on the problem first before acting on them, a technocrat relying on the authority of facts and statistics. He tends to be process-oriented [7] .
  • Management-by-Lusot and the Opportunist Manager. Lusot means shortcut, bribery, and rule-breaking. These are the types of managers and leaders who often pay off problems and take shortcuts in tasks. They are characterized by having no definite philosophy or commitment in tasks, without conscience, and a maker of deals as if everything is a game [7] .
  • Management-by-Suyod and the Reconsider Manager. Suyod means to take away lice from the hair precisely and neatly. A reconsider manager looks at the problem at all angles until everything is precise and neat. The characteristics of leaders like this include having balance in terms of work. They are also accepting, and work hard to integrate the idealist and realist manager and have a contingency management style. They are disciples of knowing the strengths and limitations of the project and the members he is working with [7] .

While most leadership and management theories are Western, it is also interesting to explore the comparisons between American Management system to the Pinoy Management system [7] :

Problems in Workplace and School

In applying Filipino leadership styles, leaders must consider their approach to leadership and make sure how their strategy will reach their members. The ability to relate to members requires a complete understanding of specific groups’ historical context, norms, and dynamics.

Father of Filipino psychology Virgilio Enriquez explains that Filipino relationships are formed through the core concept of kapwa [8] . Indigenous values such as kapwa were passed on through generations and are rooted in having a strong, shared identity within an organization and gives importance to present leaders’ relationships to their followers. It emphasizes harmony. Good relations are needed to be maintained or else a person is described as walang pakikisama, walang hiya, and walang utang ng loob. Torres (2019) [9] has found values such as kapwa to be present in both the school setting and workplace. A study by Ng & Rivera (2018) [10] noted the prevalence of this value in the workplace and how transformational leaders should contextualize member and leader exchange to push for a more successful organization.

Moreover, leadership in the school setting is still traditionally principal-centered [11] . Principal-centered approaches to leadership rely on a single authority figure to spearhead instructional and administrative tasks, with teachers only acting as support to the principal. The principals’ perspective on the local dynamics of educational leadership is based on a mixture of cultural, organizational, and political factors [12] . In this dynamic type, coordination between various sector leaders and their members primarily focuses on kinship or pakikipagkapwa, social norms, and power dynamics. An example of this is forming good relations with the government to gain funding in public schools and pass policies that would improve education. However, prioritization of kinship, while beneficial, may also foster tolerance in situations where there is an exploitation of power [12] . Kinship and establishing patron-client relationships like in school and government relationships result in debts of gratitude or utang ng loob. Utang na loob is formed out of acts of favors offered by the requesting client to the patron [11] .

In following the principal-centered approach, student leaders have limited control over school governance and decision-making processes. There is difficulty promoting systemic change using this approach, for ideas are enforced by a single person or governing body.

Last 2020, the Department of Health (DOH) called for a unified response towards mental health as part of the year’s theme. It brought to light the students’ difficulties and allowed them to have a voice during countless crises [13][14] . In those times, petitions for a call to action from the government and the students’ respective schools were made in response to the growing mental health concerns. Though schools created mental health programs, it was found that there is a considerable gap in the mental health policies and strategies made by schools because of a lack of reference in creating said policies and strategies [14] . There is also an added challenge when DepEd cannot maintain the current administrative setup as principals are being transferred to other jurisdictions [11] . This factor and other factors lead to failure in making organizational changes [15] . Organizational change, when done repeatedly, will affect the psychosocial environment and health of the organization’s members [16] . Crises, such as the COVID-9 pandemic, should be considered when reflecting on leadership and organizational management [17] .

Changing existing systems to fit the current school and workplace environment is determined by explicit and hidden dynamics. It requires a deep examination of the organization’s situations and knowing how to utilize relationships and distinct leadership styles. In the event of a crisis, learning all these things can strengthen the foundation of organizations and can provide change and improvement on the welfare of its members. The need for leaders who are responsive to the mental health concerns of their members while making necessary decisions that could benefit the organization as a whole makes one a great leader and promoter of mental health.

Improving Filipino Leadership

With the current COVID-19 situation, a study conducted by MindNation finds out that 2 out of 25 employees are at risk for mental health problems also brought by the COVID-19 anxiety followed by a personal matter, financial pressure, work performance, etc. It revealed that employees experiencing mental health difficulties have a hard time talking about these issues with their managers. The study recommended three steps that a leader could do to address mental health problems [18] .

  • Make mental health services available to the employees [18] .
  • Create mental health policy in the company to reduce the stigma about mental health and create a safe space for mental health conversations in the workplace [18] .
  • Create virtual social activities to ease the loneliness of the employees [18] .

The COVID-19 crisis tested the leaders on how well they could handle their people during these uncertain times. A study was conducted by graduate students from Ateneo De Manila University to explore what Filipinos expect their leaders to be and to do in different settings. The qualitative study utilized interviews of 48 individuals from different sectors and socioeconomic classes. Participants included executives, supervisors, professionals, support staff, and informal sector workers such as tricycle drivers and market vendors. The result shows that Filipinos want an authoritarian leader to enforce strict obedience to authority [19] .

The study also shows two distinct meanings of the term firm leader. The first meaning indicates a firm leader as an individual with an iron fist or a strict leader who can ruthlessly use power, while the other firm leader shows a leader who has the courage and can stand with their convictions. The preferred leader demonstrates both qualities [19] .

We all have differences in leadership style. Despite this, a transformational leadership style fits the criteria of effective leadership. This style of leading utilizes the fullest potential of every follower to have improvement for their performances. An effective leader must need the behavior of fellowship (kapwa), charisma, empathy (individualized consideration, intellectual stimulation, inspirational, motivational, and idealized influence). A transformational leader constructs an environment that aims to make a difference and foster success [10] .

Being an effective leader, embodying the Filipino leadership qualities, is still vulnerable to health dilemmas, especially in this pandemic. Working on a remote set-up became challenging as people are used to working with interactions face to face.

“With great power comes great responsibility.” This famous line from the Spiderman movie reminds us that being a leader, the source of power is enclosed with the responsibility not just the duty to take over the people to achieve objectives, but also the responsibility to take care of the self both physically and mentally. With this, mental health plays a vital role for an individual to function effectively. Here are some pieces of advice for coping up that a leader and even a follower must consider when experiencing stress [20] :

  • Make the team. Be a family. Being alone is not bad, but it makes us more susceptible to sadness, worrying, etc. Having companions helps us relieve our stress and sentiments in our life, as these people who are close and similar can feel the same thing and can relate to us.
  • Move around, take some steps. It is important not to stay in our working area all the time. There should be time to stand up and move around to have fresh air and take steps for good posture. Enjoy walking away from the busy place for a while.
  • Exercise. The benefits of exercise are indeed incontestable.  It is a well-proven approach that exercise can help us to improve our mood and stabilize our health.
  • Me time, my time. Choose to have a schedule for rest, a movie marathon, and any enjoyable recreational activities. Leaders and followers deserve that time to rest.
  • Help, I am yelp. It is about ending the stereotype that a leader must be strong all the time. It is okay to seek help from our family members, workmates, schoolmates, guidance counselor, employee assistance such as the human resource department. Your well-being is essential above anything else. This supporting-care system is essential in an environment for being able to achieve goals and be someone’s source of comfort and peace.

Every individual must ensure that leaders are empathic, perceptive, and responsive to maintain a productive and healthy working environment. The school and workplace are homes of comfort, understanding, and family. Let’s cultivate a place for an individual’s training ground for improvement and betterment by being a good leader and a good follower.

Defining the innovative Filipino leader

ONE of humanity’s deepest needs is to be led by a good leader.

Across the ages, around the world, we have seen and heard people long for a leader to inspire, guide, and even rule them.

Even within the organizations we work in, people search for a leader to see them through the rigors of life, often being more productive and able to contribute when there is someone to inspire them.

Not surprisingly, investors gravitate toward countries with strong leaders, recognizing that good leadership benefits society and people tremendously.

Much has been written about leaders and leadership styles, but I have yet to find a distinct style that would resonate strongest with the Filipinos of today.

In a world that is quickly shifting due to the pervasive and constant influence of technology, changing social-economic realities, and evolving cultural mores, I have always believed that Filipinos need an innovative leader, yet I have struggled how to best define him or her.

I must admit that the last person I expected to help me define the innovative leader was a man of the cloth, better yet, a Cardinal of the Catholic Church.

But during the 2015 Inaugural Meeting of the Management Association of the Philippines (MAP), I listened intently as His Eminence Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle offered a rich working definition of the innovative leader, highlighting important leadership tenets and traits that he should possess.

The Cardinal described each of these traits, as exemplified by Pope Francis, whose leadership has brought back the fervor of many lapsed Catholics and has inspired even non-Christians. Yet one does not have to be a Pope to become an innovative leader.

With dedication and commitment, we can nurture innovative Filipino leaders right in our midst.

Ethical imperative

Because of what he does and what he stands for, a true innovative leader inspires, said the Cardinal.

He is competent and is a person of integrity, inspiring people not so much with words or what he has built, but what emanates from him or what people feel or even imbibe from him.

Moreover, a true leader is ethical and has an ethic-inspired view of the society, the economy and development.

He recognizes that building trust is an imperative in leadership, and establishes trust by three important ways:

First, a true leader has genuine concern for others. This concern is real and goes beyond what is superficial. An innovative leader gives generously of himself, and is selfless. His acts of giving are ethical and authentic, and do not come with egoistic motivations.

Second, a true leader recognizes the inclusion of the poor as a non-negotiable, seeing it as both a spiritual and ethical imperative.

He includes the poor in his personal and corporate vision, factors them into planning and the formulation of goals, and considers their real needs when thinking of products to produce and sell.

Moreover, he is incredibly patient in finding ways to engage the poor.

Third, a true leader believes in personal encounters. He encounters people and recognizes that they are, like the rest of us, beings with feelings, dreams and pains.

We’ve all seen the Pope personally reach out to the marginalized and disfigured people—something that makes him understand the people he leads.

Personal encounters

This personal encounter makes the leader well grounded, making him real to the people that he will lead.

Needless to say, a good and inspiring leader must know how to deal with persons and must be an authentic person, emphasized Cardinal Tagle.

He draws strength and learns from the people he encounters. He goes to people, touches them and learns from them.

I wholeheartedly agree with the Cardinal’s definition of an innovative leader, not only because they resonate with me, but because they are the exact traits that engender trust among people.

Innovative leadership

The Third Philippine Trust Index (PTI), released late last year, offered insights on how trust is built between people and institutions.

As it happens, the traits that evoke trust are the qualities that Cardinal Tagle mentioned in describing the innovative leader.

For instance, the PTI showed that integrity, or being free from graft and corruption, is the most important driver of trust in government among respondents, with about 40 percent of respondents citing this as the most important attribute they are looking for from the government.

Apparently, for these respondents, being free from corruption reflects genuine concern for people.

The PTI findings also showed that competence, the ability to provide better jobs, attend to the needs of the poor, transparency, and communication are necessary to earn the trust of people.

For businesses, the most important trust drivers are how employees are treated, specifically by giving fair salaries and benefits, having competent leaders and keeping fair labor practices.

For NGOs, three out of 10 Filipinos identify incorruptibility as a major trust driver.

Being free from political interest is also a significant trust driver, as are being able to help those in real need, employ competent leaders, provide livelihood, and communicate and listen to their stakeholders.

In sum, the ability to win people’s trust is the mark of an innovative leader.

Nurturing leaders

This brings us to an important question: How can we nurture innovative leaders?

Leadership can definitely not be developed overnight, but the PTI shows us one way to develop innovative leadership using an important tool—communication.

Across all sectors, communication was shown to be a very important trust driver.

Communicating frequently, listening for feedback, and reaching out to audiences are important trust drivers that can help one become an innovative leader who constantly listens to and engages his followers and constituents.

The PTI also showed that organizations need to deliver good results in order to win the trust of their stakeholders.

These are the hallmarks of innovative leadership, and will show that it is indeed sincere in its engagement with their stakeholders.

Innovative leadership should not be a mere concept for us, but an evolving target that we should aspire to constantly define and live up to.

As we seek to build trust, so should we seek to develop innovative leaders who can show us the way forward.

What kind of leadership do we need to bring us to the realization of this dream? Many have gone on the journey towards understanding and shaping Filipino leadership. The essays in this volume give us insights that can help us define it. They are also reflective of a defining leadership characterized by excellence with purpose, meaningful change, systematic social development, and depth. They honor Fr. Bienvenido F. Ramon Magsaysay: 6 Reasons Why He’s The Best President Ever

Ramon Magsaysay: 6 Reasons Why He’s The Best President Ever

Honest and efficient presidents are like white lions–they are a breed of politicians so rare we sometimes think they don’t exist anymore.

And then came Ramon Magsaysay, the humble automobile mechanic-turned-president who became known as the “Champion of the Masses.” We remember him as the one who blazed a trail through his “servant leadership” in the 1950s–half a century before President Noynoy Aquino uttered the words  “Kayo ang BOSS ko!”  in his inauguration address.

Magsaysay was not a perfect president; his administration faced several issues and controversies. But his greatness overshadowed the flaws of his administration, and had he not died in that plane crash, he would have achieved more than all his successors.

In author Jose Veloso Abueva’s words, despite its brevity, Magsaysay’s governance remains “the yardstick by which Filipino presidents should be judged.”

So, is Magsaysay the best president our country ever had? Read this article, and you be the judge.

1. his brilliant counterinsurgency efforts were unprecedented.

In the early 1950s, the insurgency launched by a group of peasant farmers called Hukbalahap ( Hukbo ng Bayan Laban sa Hapon or People’s Anti-Japanese Army) was at its peak. Both the previous and incumbent presidents struggled to stop the rebellion: Roxas banned the organization in 1948, while his successor, Quirino, was stained with corruption and cronyism, infuriating the Huks even more.

Desperate to stop the Hukbalahap threats from worsening, Quirino made a strategic move: He appointed Ramon Magsaysay–a celebrated WWII guerrilla leader–as the new Secretary of National Defense. As a new appointee, Magsaysay did what his predecessor failed to do: He identified the root cause of the problem and started from there.

With the help of Lieutenant Colonel Edward G. Lansdale, an Air Force intelligence officer who served as his advisor, Magsaysay toured the whole country and saw firsthand the driving force behind the insurgency. At that point, he realized that most of the Huks were not Communists; they were simple peasants who thought that rebellion was the only answer to their suffering.

In the words of historian Teodoro Agoncillo, the Hukbalahap was the “culmination of centuries of peasant degradation, loss of self-respect, and abject poverty.”

Of course, for Magsaysay to execute his plans to end the rebellion, he needed the help of the Armed Forces. But here’s the catch: The country’s military arm was also suffering from several issues, the most serious of which were poor leadership, corruption, and a patronage system.

In other words, ending the insurgency wouldn’t be possible without first addressing the serious problems plaguing the Armed Forces. It was a challenging task, but this is when Ramon Magsaysay showcased his exemplary leadership skills and political prowess.

Magsaysay completely transformed the AFP. He fired the AFP Chief of Staff, the Chief of Constabulary, and other officers implicated in graft and corruption. He also changed how the AFP fought the insurgents, emphasizing that “the Huks are fighting an unorthodox war,” so they should also fight them “in unorthodox ways.”

This warfighting innovation, also known as  “Find Em, Fight Em, Fool Em,”  combined intelligence, combat operations, and psychological warfare.

Eventually, the Huk rebels were tracked down, and their members surrendered one after another, culminating in Luis Taruc’s arrest on May 17, 1954. All of these were achieved through the newly revamped AFP and Magsaysay’s social reforms, namely the legal assistance program for the peasants and the Economic Development Corps (EDCOR), a rehabilitation program that gave surrendered Huks an opportunity to have their own houses and land.

Magsaysay’s military and social reforms were so effective that the Communist Party leader Jesus Lava himself admitted that many Huk soldiers left the insurgency group “because repression was ending.”

2. He Gave Land to the Landless

When Magsaysay ran for president, the barrio-to-barrio campaigns only opened his eyes even more to the issues of the rural folk neglected by previous presidents.

He realized that the Philippine government shouldn’t be a government of the elites but an entity fully dedicated to the welfare of all its people–especially the peasant farmers long considered to be the “backbone of the nation.”

Magsaysay believed that insurgency would continue to exist as long as the government stayed deaf to the calls of the rural folk.  “To  be really secure,” he once said, “a country must assure for its citizens the social and economic conditions that would enable them to live in decency, free from ignorance, disease, and want.”

Magsaysay became the voice of the voiceless, and his impressive rural development programs only proved that he was sincere in uplifting the lives of the oppressed.

Ramon Magsaysay, man of the masses

To turn his vision into a reality, Magsaysay implemented several projects–all for the benefit of the rural poor.

He improved the land tenure system through the Agricultural Tenancy Act in 1954, which gave tenants the “freedom to choose the system of tenancy under which they would want to work,”  and the Land Reform Act of 1955, passed to enhance landlord-tenant relations.

Public lands were also distributed to qualified settlers: 28,000 land patents covering 241,000 hectares were issued during the first year of the Magsaysay administration alone. By 1955, an impressive 23,578 agricultural lots were distributed to landless applicants. In the same year, 8,800 families were also resettled by the  National Resettlement and Rehabilitation Administration (NARRA) in 22 settlement projects.

Magsaysay also initiated intensive community development through the Presidential Assistant for Community Development (PACD). The said agency helped build roads and other facilities for the rural folk and improved the medical and educational services in the barrios.

3. Ramon Magsaysay Created a Government of the People, by the People, for the People

President Ramon Magsaysay opened the Malacañang Palace to the masses

President Ramon Magsaysay was genuinely pro-Filipino. For instance, he wore the traditional  barong Tagalog  during his inauguration. He also used the Ilokano wine called  basi  to exchange toasts with foreign diplomats and took every chance to promote local products.

For the Filipino people, however, Magsaysay’s most memorable achievement was his effort to earn back people’s trust in the government. Known as the “The Champion of the Common Man,” Magsaysay would listen to the problems of the ordinary “tao”  at least two to three times a week. He established the Presidential Complaints and Action Committee (PCAC) to make sure that the complaints of the masses were taken care of.

Filipinos gained the courage to condemn corrupt public officials without fear of repression for the first time in many years. PCAC was so successful that in 1954 alone, they already received 59,144 complaints.

Wanting to prove that his government was for the people, Magsaysay also opened the doors of the Malacañang Palace to all its citizens–and he meant it literally. Soon, the masses began swarming the official residence, transforming the lawns into picnic grounds. So many people flocked to Malacañang during the Magsaysay era that some began to describe it as a “miniature Divisoria,” a combination of market and cockpit.

4. He Is a Good Role Model for the Youth

Magsaysay’s upbringing explains why he became a man of principle. Born in Iba, Zambales, to a blacksmith and a schoolteacher, the young Ramon Magsaysay was trained to respect the elders and develop humility, honesty, frugality, and a love for hard work.

It is said that when he was only six years old, Magsaysay’s father, Exequiel, lost his job in a public school after refusing to pass the school superintendent’s son in his carpentry class. For this reason, the Magsaysays were forced to move to Castillejas, where Exequiel built a small blacksmith shop to support his family.

Although a minor hurdle, this experience instilled the importance of honesty and clean living in the young Monching.

Ramon Magsaysay with his parents

As a young man, Monching loved to play with other boys of his age. He was a bit of a prankster, but he never forgot how to respect and shower his parents with love. Exequiel bought several blocks of ice one day because he expected to receive several guests the next day. He was planning to make ice cream but was surprised that the buried ice blocks were missing.

As it turned out, Monching and his friends took the ice blocks the night before, drove out of town, and enjoyed all the ice cream they made. In her biography, Perfecta (Monching’s mother) described how furious his husband was when he discovered no ice. He immediately rushed towards the rice field, where he found Monching with the other children.

Exequiel was so mad that he was ready to spank his son. However, his heart melted when Monching showed him the ice cream and said, ‘Father, I brought the ice in the field to make the ice cream myself so that you won’t get tired making it.’  In the end, he gave more ice cream to the boys, and what was left behind was given to the guests.

5. He Refused Special Treatment

Ramon Magsaysay, the quintessential mechanic

The masses loved President Magsaysay because he didn’t think highly of himself. He earned people’s trust because of his humility and sincerity in addressing the needs of ordinary citizens.

Unlike other politicians, Magsaysay refused to name towns, bridges, avenues, and plazas after him . He lived in a simple home, wore simple clothes (usually an “aloha” shirt and slacks), drove his car, and spoke a language easily understood by the masses. Indeed, the late President Ramon Magsaysay was the epitome of simplicity.

He wanted to set an example, someone that other public officials would look up to. For example, when he was still a Defense Secretary, he refused special treatment and lived within his means–a government salary of about $500 a month.

Historian Xiao Chua also shared two anecdotes about the great president. It is said that while Magsaysay was on his way to Malacañang to meet then-President Elpidio Quirino, their car suddenly stopped. Because his driver, Kosme, was clueless about fixing it, Magsaysay–who once worked as a mechanic at the Try Transportation Bus Company in Manila–didn’t think twice about fixing it himself, even while wearing a  barong Tagalog .

The same driver also once violated traffic rules. When the policeman saw the plate number and the passenger in the car, he allegedly said,  “My goodness! Pardon me, Mr. President. You can now proceed.”

However, Magsaysay refused to accept the “privilege” and said this instead:  “Oh no, Sargeant. You said a while ago that the law is the law.  And in that principle, I do believe.  While I am the president, the law applies to everyone; there is equality. Please give us the necessary ticket.”

6. Ramon Magsaysay Banned Nepotism and Corruption

President Ramon Magsaysay had all the qualities an ideal politician should have: Unpretentious, selfless, and utterly uninterested in money.

While the rest of Philippine politics was plagued with nepotism and a “compadre system,” Magsaysay worked hard to break the stereotype. He wanted to set an example, so he put the needs of the Filipino people above all–even at the expense of his relatives.

He hated nepotism so much that when he learned that a community well was being dug on a property owned by a relative, he immediately sent a directive and had the well moved to the middle of the village square. On the other hand, an uncle failed to get a big government cement contract after Magsaysay personally canceled the order.

He also banned his brother, who was a lawyer, from accepting any case for anyone connected with the government or for anyone “who wants to get close to the government.”

Magsaysay also hated corruption and started to fight it as soon as he entered Philippine politics. For example, on his first day as Defense Secretary, he fired several high-ranking officials in the AFP–including the Chief of Staff and the Chief of the Constabulary–as part of his military reforms. His administration was synonymous with honesty and clean governance when he became president.

Such was his effort to combat graft and corruption that public officials–from top to bottom–started to fear his presence.  “Every time I sit here and look at my stamp drawer,” recalled a local postmaster, “I start to think, well, I don’t have much money and my family needs food, maybe I ought to swipe some. Then I start thinking that that damn Magsaysay might suddenly show up … just as my hand is going into the petty cash drawer, and he’d throw me in jail.”

Filipino Leadership Styles – What are the Four Distinctive Filipino Leadership Styles

What are the four distinct filipino leadership styles (answers).

FILIPINO LEADERSHIP – Looking from the outside, some of the common practices in Filipino management can be misconstrued.

This is because the culture of Filipinos are derived from deep rooted indigenous core values. These included focusing on kinship, family, and social acceptance.

Filipino Leadership Styles - What are the Four Distinctive Filipino Leadership Styles

Those value were then intertwined with ideologies from Chinese mercantilism, American Westernization and Spanish Catholicism. Because of this, the leadership styles of the Filipino is what it is today.

The four types of Filipino leadership are Pakiramdam, Takutan, Kulit, and Patsamba-tsamba. This is according to Management And Culture In The Philippines .

Pakiramdam focuses on a passive style of leadership, with subordinates doing work that is not too little or too much to play safe. This is because this style does not provide workers with guidance required to give them sense of initiative.

Filipino Leadership Styles - What are the Four Distinctive Filipino Leadership Styles

Instead the leader motivates through being friendly or “Feeling the other” with the staff. This is done by inferring the manager’s absolute expectations, regardless of the relevance to organizational objectives.

Takutan is a style of leadership that puts the responsibility on the manager who relies on oppression, conceit, and hostility. This leadership is easily explained as a matter of professionalism.

Takutan

This requires social distance between leaders and subordinates. In other words workers and individuals with the “ranks” such as supervisors.

The manager persuades subordinates to obey without complaints to steer clear from threats and punishments. As to secure one’s acceptance within the work group, it was preferred to avoid dispute with higher-ranks.

Kulit which refers to a superior closely observes and controls the work of their subordinates by checking every detail of the assignment. This results in a lack of freedom within the workplace.

Kulit

Patsamba-tsamba is a style of management that has no goals, objectives, and direct instructions. It relies on trial and error leaving success or failure to fate.

Patsamba-tsamba

Rather than making rational decisions, the manager often prefers buoyant actions that creates disaster and disorder. This leads to confusion among subordinates resulting to inefficient organization on its operations.

Descriptive essay topics, tips for writing descriptively, descriptive essay example, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about descriptive essays.

When you are assigned a descriptive essay, you’ll normally be given a specific prompt or choice of prompts. They will often ask you to describe something from your own experience.

  • Describe a place you love to spend time in.
  • Describe an object that has sentimental value for you.

You might also be asked to describe something outside your own experience, in which case you’ll have to use your imagination.

  • Describe the experience of a soldier in the trenches of World War I.
  • Describe what it might be like to live on another planet.

Sometimes you’ll be asked to describe something more abstract, like an emotion.

If you’re not given a specific prompt, try to think of something you feel confident describing in detail. Think of objects and places you know well, that provoke specific feelings or sensations, and that you can describe in an interesting way.

The key to writing an effective descriptive essay is to find ways of bringing your subject to life for the reader. You’re not limited to providing a literal description as you would be in more formal essay types.

Make use of figurative language, sensory details, and strong word choices to create a memorable description.

Use figurative language

Figurative language consists of devices like metaphor and simile that use words in non-literal ways to create a memorable effect. This is essential in a descriptive essay; it’s what gives your writing its creative edge and makes your description unique.

Take the following description of a park.

This tells us something about the place, but it’s a bit too literal and not likely to be memorable.

If we want to make the description more likely to stick in the reader’s mind, we can use some figurative language.

Here we have used a simile to compare the park to a face and the trees to facial hair. This is memorable because it’s not what the reader expects; it makes them look at the park from a different angle.

You don’t have to fill every sentence with figurative language, but using these devices in an original way at various points throughout your essay will keep the reader engaged and convey your unique perspective on your subject.

  • Use your senses

Another key aspect of descriptive writing is the use of sensory details. This means referring not only to what something looks like, but also to smell, sound, touch, and taste.

Obviously not all senses will apply to every subject, but it’s always a good idea to explore what’s interesting about your subject beyond just what it looks like.

Even when your subject is more abstract, you might find a way to incorporate the senses more metaphorically, as in this descriptive essay about fear.

Choose the right words

Writing descriptively involves choosing your words carefully. The use of effective adjectives is important, but so is your choice of adverbs , verbs , and even nouns.

It’s easy to end up using clichéd phrases—“cold as ice,” “free as a bird”—but try to reflect further and make more precise, original word choices. Clichés provide conventional ways of describing things, but they don’t tell the reader anything about your unique perspective on what you’re describing.

Try looking over your sentences to find places where a different word would convey your impression more precisely or vividly. Using a thesaurus can help you find alternative word choices.

  • My cat runs across the garden quickly and jumps onto the fence to watch it from above.
  • My cat crosses the garden nimbly and leaps onto the fence to survey it from above.

However, exercise care in your choices; don’t just look for the most impressive-looking synonym you can find for every word. Overuse of a thesaurus can result in ridiculous sentences like this one:

  • My feline perambulates the allotment proficiently and capers atop the palisade to regard it from aloft.

An example of a short descriptive essay, written in response to the prompt “Describe a place you love to spend time in,” is shown below.

Hover over different parts of the text to see how a descriptive essay works.

On Sunday afternoons I like to spend my time in the garden behind my house. The garden is narrow but long, a corridor of green extending from the back of the house, and I sit on a lawn chair at the far end to read and relax. I am in my small peaceful paradise: the shade of the tree, the feel of the grass on my feet, the gentle activity of the fish in the pond beside me.

My cat crosses the garden nimbly and leaps onto the fence to survey it from above. From his perch he can watch over his little kingdom and keep an eye on the neighbours. He does this until the barking of next door’s dog scares him from his post and he bolts for the cat flap to govern from the safety of the kitchen.

With that, I am left alone with the fish, whose whole world is the pond by my feet. The fish explore the pond every day as if for the first time, prodding and inspecting every stone. I sometimes feel the same about sitting here in the garden; I know the place better than anyone, but whenever I return I still feel compelled to pay attention to all its details and novelties—a new bird perched in the tree, the growth of the grass, and the movement of the insects it shelters…

Sitting out in the garden, I feel serene. I feel at home. And yet I always feel there is more to discover. The bounds of my garden may be small, but there is a whole world contained within it, and it is one I will never get tired of inhabiting.

The key difference is that a narrative essay is designed to tell a complete story, while a descriptive essay is meant to convey an intense description of a particular place, object, or concept.

Narrative and descriptive essays both allow you to write more personally and creatively than other kinds of essays , and similar writing skills can apply to both.

If you’re not given a specific prompt for your descriptive essay , think about places and objects you know well, that you can think of interesting ways to describe, or that have strong personal significance for you.

The best kind of object for a descriptive essay is one specific enough that you can describe its particular features in detail—don’t choose something too vague or general.

A good descriptive essay creates a vivid picture of the topic in the reader’s mind. You may need to write a descriptive essay as a class assignment or you may decide to write one as a fun writing challenge. Start by brainstorming ideas for the essay. Then, outline and write the essay using vivid sensory details and strong descriptions. Always polish your essay and proofread it so it is at its best.

Brainstorming Ideas for the Essay

Step 1 Choose a person to describe.

  • You could also choose a fictional person to write about, such as a character in a book, a story, or a play. You could write about a character on your favorite TV show or video game.

Step 2 Pick a place or object to describe.

  • Another take on this option is to write about a made-up place or object, such as the fantastical school in your favorite book or the magic wand from your favorite TV show.

Step 3 Select an emotion to describe.

  • You could also choose a more specific emotion, such as brotherly love or self-hatred. These emotions can make for powerful descriptive essays.

Step 4 Make a list of sensory details about the topic.

  • For example, if you were writing about a person like your mother, you may write down under “sound” : “soft voice at night, clack of her shoes on the floor tiles, bang of the spoon when she cooks.”

Writing the Essay

Step 1 Outline the essay in sections.

  • If you are writing the essay for a class, your instructor should specify if they want a five paragraph essay or if you have the freedom to use sections instead.

Step 2 Create a ...

  • For example, if you were writing a descriptive essay about your mother, you may have a thesis statement like: “In many ways, my mother is the reigning queen of our house, full of contradictions that we are too afraid to question.”

Step 3 Write a strong introduction.

  • For example, if you were writing the essay about your mom, you may start with: “My mother is not like other mothers. She is a fierce protector and a mysterious woman to my sisters and I.”
  • If you were writing an essay about an object, you may start with: "Try as I might, I had a hard time keeping my pet rock alive."

Step 4 Describe the topic with vivid adjectives.

  • You can also use adjectives that connect to the senses, such “rotting,” “bright,” “hefty,” “rough,” and “pungent.”
  • For example, you may describe your mother as "bright," "tough," and "scented with jasmine."

Step 5 Use metaphors and similes.

  • You can also use similes, where you use “like” or “as” to compare one thing to another. For example, you may write, “My mother is like a fierce warrior in battle, if the battlefield were PTA meetings and the checkout line at the grocery store.”

Step 6 Discuss your emotions and thoughts about the topic.

  • For example, you may write about your complicated feelings about your mother. You may note that you feel sadness about your mother’s sacrifices for the family and joy for the privileges you have in your life because of her.

Step 7 Wrap up the essay with a strong conclusion.

  • For example, you may end a descriptive essay about your mother by noting, “In all that she has sacrificed for us, I see her strength, courage, and fierce love for her family, traits I hope to emulate in my own life.”

Polishing the Essay

Step 1 Read the essay out loud.

  • You can also read the essay aloud to others to get their feedback. Ask them to let you know if there are any unclear or vague sentences in the essay.

Step 2 Show the essay to others.

  • Be open to constructive criticism and feedback from others. This will only make your essay stronger.

Step 3 Revise the essay for clarity and length.

  • If you have a word count requirement for the essay, make sure you meet it. Add more detail to the paper or take unnecessary content out to reach the word count.

What is a Descriptive Essay? How to Write It (with Examples)

What is a Descriptive Essay? How to Write It (with Examples)

A descriptive essay is a type of creative writing that uses specific language to depict a person, object, experience, or event. The idea is to use illustrative language to show readers what the writer wants to convey – it could be as simple as a peaceful view from the top of a hill or as horrific as living in a war zone. By using descriptive language, authors can evoke a mental image in the readers’ minds, engaging readers and leaving a lasting impression, instead of just providing a play-by-play narrative.

Note that a description and descriptive essay are not the same thing. A descriptive essay typically consists of five or more well-written paragraphs with vivid imagery that can help readers visualize the content, as opposed to a description, which is typically one or more plain paragraphs with no particular structure or appeal. If you are still unsure about how to write a compelling descriptive essay, continue reading!

How to write a descriptive essay using a structured outline

Frequently asked questions.

A simple descriptive essay definition is that it is a piece of writing that gives a thorough and vivid description of an object, person, experience, or situation. It is sometimes focused more on the emotional aspect of the topic rather than the specifics. The author’s intention when writing a descriptive essay is to help readers visualize the subject at hand. Generally, students are asked to write a descriptive essay to test their ability to recreate a rich experience with artistic flair. Here are a few key points to consider when you begin writing these.

  • Look for a fascinating subject

You might be assigned a topic for your descriptive essay, but if not, you must think of a subject that interests you and about which you know enough facts. It might be about an emotion, place, event, or situation that you might have experienced.

descriptive essay computer

  • Acquire specific details about the topic

The next task is to collect relevant information about the topic of your choice. You should focus on including details that make the descriptive essay stand out and have a long-lasting impression on the readers. To put it simply, your aim is to make the reader feel as though they were a part of the experience in the first place, rather than merely describing the subject.

  • Be playful with your writing

To make the descriptive essay memorable, use figurative writing and imagery to lay emphasis on the specific aspect of the topic. The goal is to make sure that the reader experiences the content visually, so it must be captivating and colorful. Generally speaking, “don’t tell, show”! This can be accomplished by choosing phrases that evoke strong emotions and engage a variety of senses. Making use of metaphors and similes will enable you to compare different things. We will learn about them in the upcoming sections.

  • Capture all the different senses

Unlike other academic articles, descriptive essay writing uses sensory elements in addition to the main idea. In this type of essay writing, the topic is described by using sensory details such as smell, taste, feel, and touch. Example “ Mahira feels most at home when the lavender scent fills her senses as she lays on her bed after a long, tiring day at work . As the candle melts , so do her worries” . It is crucial to provide sensory details to make the character more nuanced and build intrigue to keep the reader hooked. Metaphors can also be employed to explain abstract concepts; for instance, “ A small act of kindness creates ripples that transcend oceans .” Here the writer used a metaphor to convey the emotion that even the smallest act of kindness can have a larger impact.

  • Maintain harmony between flavor and flow

The descriptive essay format is one that can be customized according to the topic. However, like other types of essays, it must have an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The number of body paragraphs can vary depending on the topic and available information.

It is crucial to remember that a descriptive essay should have a specific topic and goal, such as sharing personal experiences or expressing emotions like the satisfaction of a good meal. This is accomplished by employing exact language, imagery, and figurative language to illustrate concrete features. These language devices allow the writer to craft a descriptive essay that effectively transmits a particular mood, feeling, or incident to readers while also conjuring up strong mental imagery. A descriptive essay may be creative, or it may be based on the author’s own experiences. Below is a description of a few descriptive essay examples that fit into these categories.

  • Personal descriptive essay example

A personal essay can look like a descriptive account of your favorite activity, a place in your neighborhood, or an object that you value. Example: “ As I step out of the front door, the crisp morning air greets me with a gentle embrace; the big chestnut tree in front, sways in the wind as if saying hello to me. The world unfolds in a symphony of awakening colors, promising a day filled with untold possibilities that make me feel alive and grateful to be born again”.

  • Imaginative descriptive essay example

You may occasionally be required to write descriptive essays based on your imagination or on subjects unrelated to your own experiences. The prompts for these kinds of creative essays could be to describe the experience of someone going through heartbreak or to write about a day in the life of a barista. Imaginative descriptive essays also allow you to describe different emotions. Example, the feelings a parent experiences on holding their child for the first time.

Characteristics of descriptive essay s

The aim of a descriptive essay is to provide a detailed and vivid description of a person, place, object, event, or experience. The main goal is to create a sensory experience for the reader. Through a descriptive essay, the reader may be able to experience foods, locations, activities, or feelings that they might not otherwise be able to. Additionally, it gives the writer a way to relate to the readers by sharing a personal story. The following is a list of the essential elements of a descriptive essay:

  • Sensory details
  • Clear, succinct language
  • Organized structure
  • Thesis statement
  • Appeal to emotion

How to write a descriptive essay, with examples

Writing an engaging descriptive essay is all about bringing the subject matter to life for the reader so they can experience it with their senses—smells, tastes, and textures. The upside of writing a descriptive essay is you don’t have to stick to the confinements of formal essay writing, rather you are free to use a figurative language, with sensory details, and clever word choices that can breathe life to your descriptive essay. Let’s take a closer look at how you can use these components to develop a descriptive essay that will stand out, using examples.

  • Figurative language

Have you ever heard the expression “shooting for the stars”? It refers to pushing someone to strive higher or establish lofty goals, but it does not actually mean shooting for the stars. This is an example of using figurative language for conveying strong motivational emotions. In a descriptive essay, figurative language is employed to grab attention and emphasize points by creatively drawing comparisons and exaggerations. But why should descriptive essays use metaphorical language? One it adds to the topic’s interest and humor; two, it facilitates the reader’s increased connection to the subject.

These are the five most often used figurative language techniques: personification, metaphor, simile, hyperbole, and allusion.

  • Simile: A simile is a figure of speech that is used to compare two things while emphasizing and enhancing the description using terms such as “like or as.”

Example: Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving – Albert Einstein

  • Metaphor: A metaphor are also used to draw similarities, but without using direct or literal comparisons like done in similes.

Example: Books are the mirrors of the soul – Virginia Woolf, Between the acts

  • Personification: This is the process of giving nonhuman or abstract objects human traits. Any human quality, including an emotional component, a physical attribute, or an action, can be personified.

Example: Science knows no country, because knowledge belongs to humanity, and is the torch which illuminates the world – Louis Pasteur

  • Hyperbole: This is an extreme form of exaggeration, frequently impractical, and usually employed to emphasize a point or idea. It gives the character more nuance and complexity.

Example: The force will be with you, always – Star Wars

  • Allusion: This is when you reference a person, work, or event without specifically mentioning them; this leaves room for the reader’s creativity.

Example: In the text below, Robert Frost uses the biblical Garden of Eden as an example to highlight the idea that nothing, not even paradise, endures forever.

Then leaf subsides to leaf.

So Eden sank to grief,

So dawn goes down to day.

Nothing gold can stay

– Nothing Gold Can Stay by Robert Frost (1923)

Descriptive essays need a combination of figurative language and strong sensory details to make the essay more memorable. This is when authors describe the subject matter employing senses like smell, sound, touch, and taste so that the reader can relate to it better.

Example of a sensory-based descriptive essay: The earthy fragrance of freshly roasted chestnuts and the sight of bright pink, red, orange fallen leaves on the street reminded her that winter was around the corner.

  • Word choice

Word choice is everything in a descriptive essay. For the description to be enchanting, it is essential to utilize the right adjectives and to carefully consider the verbs, nouns, and adverbs. Use unusual terms and phrases that offer a new viewpoint on your topic matter instead of overusing clichés like “fast as the wind” or “lost track of time,” which can make your descriptive essay seem uninteresting and unoriginal.

See the following examples:

Bad word choice: I was so happy because the sunset was really cool.

Good word choice: I experienced immense joy as the sunset captivated me with its remarkable colors and breathtaking beauty.

  • Descriptive essay format and outline

Descriptive essay writing does not have to be disorganized, it is advisable to use a structured format to organize your thoughts and ensure coherent flow in your writing. Here is a list of components that should be a part of your descriptive essay outline:

  • Introduction
  • Opening/hook sentence
  • Topic sentence
  • Body paragraphs
  • Concrete details
  • Clincher statement

descriptive essay computer

Introduction:

  • Hook: An opening statement that captures attention while introducing the subject.
  • Background: Includes a brief overview of the topic the descriptive essay is based on.
  • Thesis statement: Clearly states the main point or purpose of the descriptive essay.

Body paragraphs: Each paragraph should have

  • Topic sentence: Introduce the first aspect or feature you will describe. It informs the reader about what is coming next.
  • Sensory details: Use emphatic language to appeal to the reader’s senses (sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell).
  • Concrete details: These are actual details needed to understand the context of the descriptive essay.
  • Supporting details: Include relevant information or examples to improve the description.

Conclusion:

  • Summarize key points: Here you revisit the main features or aspects of the subject.
  • Restate thesis statement: Reinforce the central impression or emotion.
  • Clincher statement: Conclude with a statement that summarizes the entire essay and serve as the last words with a powerful message.

Revision and editing:

  • Go over your essay to make sure it is coherent, clear, and consistent.
  • Check for logical paragraph transitions by proofreading the content.
  • Examine text to ensure correct grammar, punctuation, and style.
  • Use the thesaurus or AI paraphrasing tools to find the right words.

A descriptive essay often consists of three body paragraphs or more, an introduction that concludes with a thesis statement, and a conclusion that summarizes the subject and leaves a lasting impression on readers.

A descriptive essay’s primary goal is to captivate the reader by writing a thorough and vivid explanation of the subject matter, while appealing to their various senses. A list of additional goals is as follows: – Spark feeling and imagination – Create a vivid experience – Paint a mental picture – Pique curiosity – Convey a mood or atmosphere – Highlight specific details

Although they both fall within the creative writing category, narrative essays and descriptive essays have different storytelling focuses. While the main goal of a narrative essay is to tell a story based on a real-life experience or a made-up event, the main goal of a descriptive essay is to vividly describe a person, location, event, or emotion.

How to Write a Descriptive Essay

This could be something as simple as your favorite flavor of ice cream or as complicated as the politics of 13th century Vienna. Different than a simple description, a descriptive essay allows the writer to really show off both their imagination as well as their writing skills.

What is a Descriptive Essay?

A descriptive essay is a type of academic writing that asks the writer to fully describe a place, person, situation, event, or thing. They can be simple or they can be very complex depending on the subject matter and audience written for. These types of essays train a writer’s ability to express themselves accurately as well as build compelling sentences and arguments.

Descriptive Essay Ideas

There is no exhaustive list of things that can be described, but these are some of the most common things you may be asked to write about.

A Location - The goal of writing about a place is to make the reader feel as if they are there. Words, similes, and metaphors that ignite the reader’s imagination are essential. Try and immerse the reader in the sights, smells, and sounds of the place you are describing. Examples could be a city, a view, a particular building like your house, etc.

A Time Period - Similar to writing about a location, the goal is to make the reader lose themselves in the time you are describing. This requires great research to be able to describe physical characteristics as authentically and as well as possible. This could include how you felt a year ago, an ancient time period, or the future.

An Event - The goal of describing an event is to explain a series of interesting circumstances. Typical storytelling elements like describing the plot, setting, and characters are useful, but make sure you focus on the chain of events.

An Emotion - The goal of describing an emotion is to make the reader feel the sentiments of the character you are describing. Metaphors and similes are very useful when trying to evoke an emotion in a reader along with physical descriptions that express the emotion.

A Person - The goal of writing about a person is to make the reader understand something about that person. This includes physical descriptions of what they look like, what kind of clothing they wear, a sense of the physical presence along with their profession,  as well as how they behave.

Descriptive Essay Outline and Structure

Though a descriptive type of essay is quite different from a typical academic paper, it still follows a classic 5 paragraph format. Always follow any directions though, sometimes you may need more or fewer body paragraphs. This is a general structure you should keep in mind for this type of essay.

  • Introduction/background information

Body Paragraphs

  • Topic Sentence
  • Sensory Information
  • Physical Descriptions
  • Transition Sentence
  • Summary of the main points
  • Restate the thesis

An outline is always a good idea for any kind of writing, but it is particularly useful for this type of essay because it collects your thoughts and makes sure your essay stays on track.

Introduction
  • Hook - The sting of salty water, the hypnotic crash of the waves, the breathtaking sunsets, the best vacation spot?
  • Background information - Everyone is different and everyone likes different types of things. When it comes to vacations though, there is a place that almost everyone enjoys.
  • Thesis - In my opinion, the beach is the best possible vacation spot because of the variety of ways one can enjoy it.
Body Paragraph 1
  • Topic Sentence - The beach has many kinds of natural beauty
  • Sensory information - The unlimited expanse of the ocean combined with glorious sunrises and sunsets.
  • Physical descriptions -The crunch of sand below your bare feet and the crash of waves on your body.
  • Transition sentence - There’s more than just natural beauty though, there are physical activities to enjoy as well
  • Body Paragraph 2
  • Topic Sentence - The beach has unlimited activities for physical enjoyment.
  • Sensory information - The thrill of battling with the ocean, the joy of falling on the sand, the wind streaming through your hair, and the pleasant tingling of the sun on bare skin.
  • Physical descriptions - Water sports like surfing, jet skiing, and the like allow you to exercise in one of the most fun ways possible. Not to mention sports like frisbee, volleyball, beach soccer, and more.
  • Transition sentence - If you just want to relax, the beach is perfect for that too!
  • Body Paragraph 3

Next, create an outline to better structure your thoughts and figure out the pieces of information you need to find out more about. The more time you spend creating a well-researched outline, the better your endpaper is going to be, and you’ll end up spending less time on actually writing the paper. Now you can move on the writing the descriptive essay introduction.

How to Write a Descriptive Essay Thesis

A thesis statement is the main argument you are trying to make in your paper. It is the main point you are trying to describe. A good thesis statement for descriptive essay is particular without being too brief. It should include not only just what the topic is, but also mention why the topic is important.

How to Write Body Paragraphs

You can have as many body paragraphs as you think are necessary to achieve the goal of describing something clearly. This means you could have just one body paragraph, the standard three, or more.

Start every paragraph with a topic sentence that explains what the main purpose of the paragraph is. Next fill in sensory details, describing the emotions before moving on to describing the actual physical details. End each body paragraph with a transition sentence that helps each paragraph flow into the other. Not only does this make your writing stronger, but it also helps you create an immersive experience.

How to Write the Conclusion

Summarize the main points of your essay and make sure that you reiterate the thesis statement. This reminds people of the point of your essay and ensures that when writing, you don’t stray too far from the point.

Descriptive Essay Format

There are 3 main formats of citation types for essays. Though the most common one is MLA, it is possible that you may have to use APA or Chicago Style citations.

MLA stands for Modern Language Association and is used primarily for the arts and humanities.  MLA uses in-text parenthetical citation in the format of (Author, Page). The page at the end that contains all the sources is called the Works Cited page. The format of these entries is unique to MLA but is easy to make with a citation generator.

APA stands for American Psychological Association and is used mostly for the sciences and social sciences. APA uses in-text parenthetical citations in the format (Author, Date). The page at the end that contains all the sources is called the References section

Chicago Style is used primarily for Business, History, and the Fine Arts. In-text citation can be either as footnotes or parenthetical citation in the format (Author, Date). The page at the end that contains all the sources is called the Bibliography.

Most descriptive essays will follow the MLA style of citation, but if you need any more help, find a guide on Studyfy.com for more information about citation styles in general.

The Modes of Discourse—Exposition, Description, Narration, Argumentation (EDNA)—are common paper assignments you may encounter in your writing classes. Although these genres have been criticized by some composition scholars, the Purdue OWL recognizes the wide spread use of these approaches and students’ need to understand and produce them.

What is a descriptive essay?

The descriptive essay is a genre of essay that asks the student to describe something—object, person, place, experience, emotion, situation, etc. This genre encourages the student’s ability to create a written account of a particular experience. What is more, this genre allows for a great deal of artistic freedom (the goal of which is to paint an image that is vivid and moving in the mind of the reader).

One might benefit from keeping in mind this simple maxim: If the reader is unable to clearly form an impression of the thing that you are describing, try, try again!

Here are some guidelines for writing a descriptive essay.

  • Take time to brainstorm

If your instructor asks you to describe your favorite food, make sure that you jot down some ideas before you begin describing it. For instance, if you choose pizza, you might start by writing down a few words: sauce, cheese, crust, pepperoni, sausage, spices, hot, melted, etc. Once you have written down some words, you can begin by compiling descriptive lists for each one.

  • Use clear and concise language.

This means that words are chosen carefully, particularly for their relevancy in relation to that which you are intending to describe.

  • Choose vivid language.

Why use horse when you can choose stallion ? Why not use tempestuous instead of violent ? Or why not miserly in place of cheap ? Such choices form a firmer image in the mind of the reader and often times offer nuanced meanings that serve better one’s purpose.

  • Use your senses!

Remember, if you are describing something, you need to be appealing to the senses of the reader. Explain how the thing smelled, felt, sounded, tasted, or looked. Embellish the moment with senses.

  • What were you thinking?!

If you can describe emotions or feelings related to your topic, you will connect with the reader on a deeper level. Many have felt crushing loss in their lives, or ecstatic joy, or mild complacency. Tap into this emotional reservoir in order to achieve your full descriptive potential.

  • Leave the reader with a clear impression.

One of your goals is to evoke a strong sense of familiarity and appreciation in the reader. If your reader can walk away from the essay craving the very pizza you just described, you are on your way to writing effective descriptive essays.

  • Be organized!

It is easy to fall into an incoherent rambling of emotions and senses when writing a descriptive essay. However, you must strive to present an organized and logical description if the reader is to come away from the essay with a cogent sense of what it is you are attempting to describe.

You need to focus on describing a certain person, place, or event.

Luckily for you, the following blog post will provide some helpful tips on how to create an engaging essay.

Continue reading to learn how to write an A-worthy descriptive essay.

Descriptive Essay

On this Page

A descriptive essay is a detailed paper that describes a place, person, situation, object, or emotion. Different people have different points of view and your job is to explain yours in detail.

You may be asked to write a descriptive essay about the beach or forest or about a person or situation. The purpose of this essay is to test the writer’s ability in expressing and explaining their experiences.

Descriptive writing should create a picture in the reader’s mind. You may be required to write a descriptive essay as a high school or college essay assignment.

For a compelling essay, using adjectives and adverbs, details, and figurative language is fundamental. Without proper usage of words, you will not be able to invoke the readers' emotions.

The purpose of a descriptive essay is to describe a person, place, or personal experience in vivid detail so that the reader can create a picture in his mind.

The descriptive essay is written to get the reader to understand by using descriptive language. It is different from narrative essays, where the writer tells the story about someone else. Usually, it starts with a real-life event and then the content follows the author's imagination.

Descriptive essays are not intended to persuade the reader or show facts and figures to prove something. Descriptive essays are like word paintings that contain personal and descriptive details and these are mostly assigned to students of creative writing.

A strong start for your descriptive essay is essential. Analyze your topic from every angle and document the following details:

Analyze the main subjects in detail and observe minute things.

  • Start with observing all the possible aspects of the subject.
  • Don't just observe the object but also its surroundings.
  • Focus on details and features of the subject and develop opinions about them.
  • Be thoughtful; this first step will be the basis for the essay.

Physical Settings

Describing the physical settings is a must in a descriptive essay. When describing, keep the following points in mind.

  • Focus on the subject's position and observe nearby objects
  • Note the time of day and kind of lighting: natural or imitated
  • Physical settings: all the basic and decorative elements
  • The position and shape of the objects
  • Alignment and any other observable information

Physical Features

When describing the physical features of the subject, living or nonliving, consider the following points.

  • Living or nonliving; describe the features in detail
  • The subject's skin color, texture, smoothness, expression, and age
  • The features of inanimate objects in the picture, color, surface, and texture

Create Drama

Storytelling and drama are the life and blood of a good descriptive essay. It turns your essay into an exciting and interesting piece of writing. However, be subtle about adding drama to your sentence structure and add it to complement your story only.

Focus On Your Feelings

Focus on how you feel about the particular topic or person and stick to it. It is easy to get involved when working on the essay. But, focus on your own feelings and write an essay based on them.

Use Of Specific Vocabulary

Vocabulary is important. Select the best words for describing an action or object. Don't always use the first word that comes to mind.

Write slowly and thoughtfully, and use specific words to convey your thoughts.

Psychological Aspects

Writing about a certain situation or behavior of a person focuses on the mental aspects and emotions involved in them.

For Example, describe your emotions when your friend misplaced your notes right before the exam.

You may have had several emotions in that incident. Maybe you were prepared for exams, but this situation put you under pressure and made you feel frustrated and hurt.

Explore those emotions and describe the feelings they aroused. Describe the body language also, if relevant.

Ask Yourself, WHY?

This is the most valuable tip for students. When you are looking at a particular subject, and having difficulty analyzing its aspects, ask yourself "WHY".

  • Why is the subject the way it is?
  • Why does the person you are describing have such a deep-set and cold eyes?
  • Why is the animal so wounded and terrified?
  • Why is this particular place famous?

It is a good practice and after some time you will do it naturally. Knowing the why is important if you want to describe your topic properly.

How To Write A Descriptive Essay?

When you write a descriptive essay, you help your readers visualize an event, a person, or a story. It is written to make your readers feel what you feel about the respective subject.

A descriptive essay seeks to appeal to some or all of the audience’s five senses. Some key things to consider are:

  • Discussing your subject thoroughly
  • Focusing on details and adding them in your essay
  • Sharing your personal feelings and experience about the subject
  • Observing and describing all sensory details of your subject

1- Choose an Engaging and Focused Essay Topic

An important step that all strong descriptive essays share is having a focused topic. Before you make the outline, identify the purpose of your essay and use it to create an appropriate thesis statement. This type of paper does not require much personal opinion from you. Its main goal should be focusing on information that will make a dominant impression in readers' minds instead.

2- Research and Gather Important Details

When writing a descriptive essay, it is important to make sure you include as many details and sensory information as possible. This helps your reader fully understand the images that are being presented in their mind's eye.You can organize these ideas into categories so they're easy for you to access when needed.

3- Create an Outline of Your Essay

Your essays must be organized by having subheadings that are clear and concise. Group your main points into individual body paragraphs, each of which should only cover one idea or topic at a time.

4- Write your Essay’s Introduction

A good introductory paragraph is much like a road map because it provides direction to your readers.

It provides relevant background information before diving into more specific details related to how something works or why something happens. These could include statistics or stories from real-life scenarios.

5- Write the Main Body Section of Your Essay

Each body paragraph should start with a topic sentence that keeps the reader hooked on what you are saying. Use specific details instead of making generalized statements, and make sure to give examples if necessary.

6- End with a Strong Conclusion

The conclusion of an essay is the final paragraph, and it should summarize all that you have said throughout. It's a good idea to restate the main points and key details from the essay in this section.

It is important so the reader has everything they need for better understanding before ending off on something new.

If necessary be sure not to introduce anything odd or unusual, to avoid any confusion.

7- Proofread and Revise the Essay Carefully

Once you are done writing the essay, proofread and revise it carefully. Make sure that it is free from all kinds of errors.

Descriptive Essay Outline

Like all the other essays, a descriptive essay also follows the usual 5-paragraph essay structure and format. Before starting, it is important to create an outline. Following are the fundamental elements of your descriptive essay outline:

Descriptive Essay Introduction

The introduction sets the footing for the entire essay. Before heading towards the body section, the reader will come across the introduction.

It is the first impression of your work. It is very important to write an engaging introduction so that the readers read the essay till the end.

Start the essay in an easy-to-understand way and language. Provide background information on your topic so they can understand it and its importance.

To make sure the reader feels your emotions and decides to continue reading further, incorporate the following points in your introduction.

The following tips will guide you on how to write a good introduction for a descriptive essay.

  • Attract the reader's attention with an interesting fact, phrase, or quote
  • Don't bombard them with information
  • Go straight to the main pointsInclude enough information to introduce the topic and its significance.
  • Summarize the argument and the main topic and craft your thesis statement

Descriptive Essay Thesis Statement

A thesis statement is an integral part of your essay. It focuses on the argument and the writer’s main idea, which is to be discussed in the essay.

This statement also provides the writer with a chance of explaining the purpose and scope of the topic. It is intriguing and engaging.

A thesis statement is written at the end of the introduction, it is mainly a single sentence that describes the essay objective. The thesis statement should act as a guide to the reader on what to expect in the essay body. It is like a table of contents of a book, to the reader on contents you will get an idea of what the book is all about so you get to understand it better.

It is like a table of contents of a book. By reading it, you will get an idea of what the book is all about.

A good thesis should contain the following things:

  • Define the essay scope - it should narrow down all the points to clarify its purpose.
  • Avoid using common words - you should be creative with your choice of words.
  • Create suspense - it should attract the reader to the body paragraphs of the essay.

For further information on how to write a thesis for a descriptive essay, check out the following examples.

  • Descriptive essay example about a Place

“Even though monarchy is long gone, Buckingham Palace is here to remind us of the aesthetic beauty of that era.”

  • Descriptive essay example about a Person

“One of the characteristics of Spider-Man is his youthfulness, and the fact that he talks to himself more than Hamlet.”

  • Descriptive essay example about an Emotion

“For numerous reasons, the dark forest is my greatest fear, though not a fear which is necessarily smart to face.”

Descriptive Essay Body Paragraphs

Body paragraphs of the essay come next after the introduction and thesis statement. It is the main part that continues your essay.

Usually, an essay consists of three body paragraphs but you can add more if needed.

Don't add more than one central idea in one paragraph. Fusing different ideas will confuse the reader.

Build your paragraphs according to the thesis and introduction.

  • Start each body paragraph with the main sentence
  • Use transitions to move between paragraphs smoothly
  • Each paragraph should be five to six sentences long

Descriptive Essay Conclusion

The concluding paragraph is the last part of an essay, and probably your last chance to impress your reader.

The last part that the reader can keep in mind is the conclusion, which is as important as the rest of the essay.

To make it interesting and thought-provoking, include the following points:

  • Restate the thesis statement
  • Summarize the main points
  • Add an intriguing closing statement

After writing the conclusion, make a review of your essay, identify the mistakes and maintain a good tone throughout the essay.

Descriptive essay is one of the hardest forms of writing. To master descriptive writing, you must be creative and craft a scene that all readers can picture with words alone. This freedom and creativity can make it one of the most rewarding and fun essays to write. It is the backbone of all artful writing like poetry, novels, and even television scripts. We prepared this guide for You to learn all you need to know about descriptive writing. Let's start!

Descriptive Essay

The goal of a descriptive essay is simple, choose a subject and describe it. The subject could be anything:

The subject of the essay

A descriptive essay is all about describing the subject in great detail. Being a type of expository writing , it gives you great freedom to paint a picture with your words, shares a once in a lifetime event with the reader or makes them feel something.  It is better to choose a descriptive essay topic that has lots of qualities to discuss for example a person might have a more interesting feature to describe than a paper towel. Choose a subject you connect with emotionally or have a personal history with. The best descriptions come from retelling an experience.

The Difference Between Descriptive and Narrative Essays

The main difference between descriptive and narrative essays lies in the structure and purpose of the essay. A descriptive essay is used to describe a subject to present a clear picture of it. As such, it only requires you to describe the item in a logic fashion. A narrative essay’s purpose is to tell a story. As such, it requires a plot and logical progression to an outcome. A person’s face can be the subject of a descriptive essay. But it would be hard to write a narrative piece that follows the person’s face as the central plot of a story.

Showing VS Telling

Show details while describing

A descriptive essay values details over facts. This is also known as showing vs. telling. To  show  something is to describe using the five senses, how it looks, how it smells, how it tastes, how it feels and how it sounds. Imagine the reader as an alien, who has never experienced the subject for themselves. How would you describe it then?

To give you an understanding of how to differentiate between showing and telling I’ll write an example of a descriptive paper that describes my favorite place.

Description sample

The above example tells you, as it doesn’t evoke any of your senses. It is a senseless description . It’s vague and hard to imagine.

Good example of a Descriptive Essay

This description is more detail and easier to imagine because of the following changes:

  • The choice of words like ‘haven’ instead of ‘like’ add a showing element as it is showing in what way I like the library.
  • Putting describers before items like ‘brightly colored’ books makes it easier to see.
  • And choosing words with more like ‘towering’ instead of ‘tall’ makes the description less full.
  • The description of the books shows what they do, not what they are. These are important points to consider when writing a descriptive essay.

A good exercise for descriptive writing and is to read descriptive essay examples and pick out the words that do the four points outlined above. Analyzing other’s descriptive writing will make your own descriptive work stronger. Can you pick out another place in the descriptive essay example above where those four changes occur and what it lends to the description?

Still having problems with your descriptive paper? All you need is to request help from our top-notch essay writing service and our essay writer make it for you !

How to Choose a Descriptive Essay Topic?

When deciding what to highlight about your topic, take a step back and look at what draws you to it. A campfire has bright, flickering colors, a satisfying crackling sound, and a sort of flow as it moves from the bottom to the tip of the flame. Place yourself in proximity to the subject and describe the parts that stimulate your senses the most.

Here are some examples of descriptive essay topics that are fun to write:

How to Set Up a Proper Description?

Slow down and think about what you want to invoke. Don’t rush into a description or you’ll likely end up with something weaker than you could have. Take your topic aside and write some sentences describing how it charms each sense – the five senses being:

Keep a thesaurus on hand to switch some of the more basic words out. If you can read your paragraph back and vividly imagine the item you’ve described, you’ve done it.

How to write a Descriptive Essay Outline

The plan of writing

Starting your descriptive essay without a plan can lead to a messy and sprawling description.  Learning to outline your ideas is just as important as knowing how to write them.

Creating an Introduction for a Descriptive Writing

Once you have chosen the subject to write you need to plan the introduction for your descriptive paper. An introduction needs to include a thesis statement and three features of the thing you are describing.   The introduction should start with a thesis statement that states how you feel about your topic. This should then be supported with three qualities defining those feelings.

Examples of a thesis statement

These thesis statements aren’t meant to be complex. All they’re meant to do is to set up your reader for your descriptions. It is important to include three reasons that you can expand on describe in great detail as they will form the paragraphs of your descriptive paper.

Planning and Writing the Body of a Descriptive Essay

Looking at your thesis statement, take those three reasons and break them down into their own paragraphs. Describe hanging out with your friends at the beach, talk about the food you’d eat, the activities you’d participate in. Detail what huskies do when they’re energetic, what shows that they get along with other dogs?

It helps to write about each way you can describe an item on a separate sheet of paper. Use that sheet as your descriptive essay outline. Take each item and write what sense you can use to describe the item in each paragraph.

For example, if you want to talk about eating a popsicle on the beach you could include how cold against your tongue for touch, that it smelt and tasted like raspberries, it was a bright red, and shaped like a rocket for sight, and the sound you made it as you bit on it, or the sound you made as it rocketed into your mouth. Expand this into a paragraph keeping the most vivid description.

Force your reader to imagine objects

Force your reader to imagine these objects in their head. Help them visualize it, pour your vision into the paper and focus on both the small and the big details. Just don’t go overboard. It’s important to have a few great descriptors rather than a ton of average ones.

When describing an object, go about it in a practical sense. Don’t just throw details on the page, talk about them in order. Describe a mountain from its peak to it’s middle all the way down to its base. You wouldn’t go from the middle to the base to the peak, would you? This way, you’re keeping your reader engaged with the topic.

Concluding a Descriptive Essay

Concluding descriptive writing is easy. All you have to show why the subject you described is important to you. All you have to do is show the reader what you implied. Show why it has meaning, and why they should care.

Descriptive Essay Example

Drafting your essay.

Make sure that your essay responds to these questions

Where the organization comes to fruition. When writing your essay, keep the reader in your head at all times. Constantly as yourself: “Is this vivid enough?” Don’t focus much on grammar, get the content onto the paper.

Questions to Ask Yourself

Once you’ve finished writing your essay, read it back and make sure it responds positively to each of these questions:

  • Are these descriptions making my writing visual? Could I make them more vivid?
  • Have I used these descriptions to detail my emotions to the reader?
  • Do these descriptions convey each of the five senses?
  • Have I gone into enough details in each paragraph?
  • Are my descriptions in an orderly fashion?

If you believe your essay fits these criteria, then you’re good to go on the content side.

Perfecting the Essay

Double check your essay

Read it through a couple more times. Take some time away from it and then come back with a fresh mindset.  Correct any grammar issues you see, and double check that it answers all of the questions mentioned above. Once that’s done, you’ll have an essay worthy of an A+ grade.

From Our Writers: Tips on How to Write a Good Descriptive Essay

  • Be sensitive. Some writers are scared to show their true selves, but the point of a descriptive essay is to talk about how an object affects your senses and emotions. Keep this in mind during all stages of the essay.
  • Put effort into unique descriptions. Don’t settle for standard words, spend some time searching out alternatives to common descriptive words. It will only help the reader envision your thoughts.
  • Write about something that you care about. If you choose something you don’t have much personal experience with, you can’t truly write from the heart.

What Is a Descriptive Essay

A descriptive essay is a form of writing that employs vivid language and sensory details to create a vivid picture or experience for the reader. Unlike other types of essays that may focus on analyzing, persuading, or narrating, the primary goal of this type of an essay is to paint a compelling and detailed picture in the reader's mind. It often involves the writer using descriptive words, metaphors, and other literary devices to convey a sensory experience, allowing the reader to visualize, feel, hear, smell, and taste what is being described. The purpose is to evoke a strong emotional response and engage the reader's imagination, making them feel like they are part of the depicted scene or moment.

In a descriptive essay, the writer carefully selects and organizes details to convey a specific impression or mood. The subject matter can range from a personal experience to observing a place, event, or object. The effectiveness lies in the writer's ability to create a vivid and immersive experience, enabling the reader to connect with the described subject on a deeper level. Ultimately, a well-executed descriptive essay leaves a lasting impression by bringing words to life and making the reader experience the depicted elements in a tangible and memorable way. Description vs. Descriptive Essay

Description and descriptive essays are related concepts, but they differ in scope and form. Description is a broader term that refers to the act of detailing the characteristics or features of something, someone, or a specific situation. It can be a component of various types of writing, not limited to essays. Description can be found in narratives, expository writing, and even technical or scientific writing, where clarity and precision in detailing are crucial. In essence, description is a tool used in writing to enhance understanding and create a vivid mental image.

On the other hand, a descriptive essay is a specific genre of writing that focuses entirely on painting a comprehensive and detailed picture using descriptive language. It is a more concentrated form of expression, where the writer's primary objective is to engage the reader's senses and emotions. Our custom writers suggest that a descriptive essay typically centers around a particular theme, experience, or subject, and it employs vivid imagery, figurative language, and sensory details to create a captivating narrative. Unlike a simple description, a descriptive essay has a more structured and narrative-oriented format, often with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

Description vs. Descriptive Essay

What to Describe in Your Essay

In a descriptive essay, you have the opportunity to portray a particular subject vividly, and the key is to engage the reader's senses and imagination. Here are some ideas on what you can describe:

  • Scenic Locations. Transport your reader to a specific place – a serene beach, a bustling city street, a lush forest, or an ancient castle. Describe the sights, sounds, smells, and feelings associated with that location.
  • Memorable Experiences. Share a personal experience that left a lasting impression on you. It could be a significant event, a life-changing moment, or even a routine activity that holds special meaning.
  • People. Describe a person who has had a profound impact on your life or someone you find intriguing. Focus not only on their physical appearance but also on their personality, quirks, and the emotions they evoke.
  • Objects. Choose a specific object, whether it's a cherished possession, a historical artifact, or something mundane yet interesting. Explore its significance and how it makes you feel.
  • Seasons and Weather. Capture the essence of a particular season or weather condition. Whether it's the warmth of a summer day, the crispness of autumn, or the sound of raindrops on a window – make the reader feel the atmosphere.
  • Animals or Pets. Bring to life a beloved pet or an encounter with a fascinating animal. Describe their appearance, behavior, and the emotions they evoke in you.
  • Cultural Events. Attend a cultural event, festival, or celebration, and describe the vibrant colors, sounds, and traditions. Explore how these events make you feel and their cultural significance.
  • Art and Creativity. Choose a piece of art, a sculpture, or a creative work that captivates you. Dive into the details, uncovering the emotions it evokes and its impact on your perception.

Two Approaches to Writing a Descriptive Essay

Two Classic Approaches to the Descriptive Essay

There are generally two primary approaches to writing a descriptive essay, each emphasizing a different aspect of the subject. These approaches help shape the overall tone and purpose of the essay:

Objective Approach. In the objective approach, the writer strives to provide a detailed and accurate portrayal of the subject without injecting personal emotions or opinions. This method is often employed in academic and technical writing. The focus is on presenting an unbiased, factual description that allows readers to form their own opinions. For example, if describing a historical monument, the writer would focus on architectural details, historical context, and other observable features without interjecting personal feelings.

Subjective Approach. Conversely, the subjective approach encourages the writer to infuse personal experiences, emotions, and opinions into the description. This approach is often used in creative writing, personal narratives, or essays that aim to evoke specific emotions in the reader. When using a subjective approach, the writer might vividly describe how the subject makes them feel, drawing on personal memories and sensory experiences. For instance, if describing a favorite childhood place, the writer might delve into nostalgic emotions and memories associated with that location.

The choice between these approaches depends on the writer's goals and the intended impact on the reader. Some essays may even blend elements of both approaches, providing factual details while also conveying the writer's emotional connection to the subject. The key is to be intentional in choosing the approach that best serves the purpose of the descriptive essay. Or, you can buy cheap essay to avoid the trouble now and save valuable free time.

You ever read a really good travel essay? It makes you believe that you are there with the writer, it paints a vivid picture. This is because the essay is so descriptive, that it appeals to our senses. As a result, our brain starts imagining it. Let’s learn more about a descriptive essay.

Suggested Videos

What is a descriptive essay.

Our brain is so powerful that it can easily imagine scenarios and make use of our senses. The job of such an essay is to appeal to our senses in a way that it creates an image in our minds. Hence a descriptive essay plays with at least one of our five senses (touch, smell, taste, hearing, sight).

In other words, the description of the person, place or thing in an essay should be really vivid. This means it after reading the essay, the reader should be left feeling like they actually know the person, have held the object or have visited the place.

Descriptive Essay

In the light of the above-mentioned things, it is comfortable to say that a descriptive essay provides for artistic freedom. For example, assume you’re writing about a house.

Instead of simply stating that the house was beautiful, you should talk about the color of the house, the garden in front of it i.e. all the details about the house. In that way, the readers would be able to imagine the house because of a nicely written essay.

Contents of a Descriptive Essay

As it is with most of the written forms of English literature, the basic structure of a descriptive essay also comprises of an introduction, a body, and the conclusion.

  • The introduction of a descriptive essay should be interesting enough to catch a reader’s attention. The introduction should be all about creating a base or a background for the person, place or thing you’re going to describe in your essay.
  • Next, the main body of a descriptive essay should appeal to the reader’s senses. This includes unfolding the information by creating images in the reader’s mind. A trick to achieving this is to explain how the subject about which you’re writing in your descriptive essay, appeals to your senses.
  • Lastly, the conclusion should summarize the whole essay. Along with again going over the main details about the essay’s subject, you should end the essay in a way that it gives a sense of completion.

Before starting off with a descriptive essay, thinking about the subject in detail will be your best bet. Just take some time off and imagine about the subject. This means to imagine how the subject appeals to your senses- how does it smell, looks like and so on.

Further, if the subject is related to a past experience think about how it felt or your experience with the subject. Next, express all of these on the paper right in front of you. You can also take some time to think about how you want your essay to unfold. Lastly, a revision of the essay provides a great opportunity for improvements and small tweaks. Remember that a descriptive essay is all about teasing the reader’s senses.

Preliminary observations on the Quaternary deposits of Ladakh and Karakoram Himalaya and their palaeoclimatic significance are highlighted in this article. Based on the geomorphology and sedimentary field evidences, a tentative scenario of landscape evolution and climate is proposed. Our observations suggest that the Quaternary landscape was evolved due to the interaction of climate and seismicity. The earliest event was dominated by regional glacial activity that was followed by humid fluvio-lacustrine environments. This phase was succeeded by a renewed phase of glacial activity, though restricted to higher altitudes due to moisture-starved condition. Following this the region experienced marginal improvement in aridity that continued till Present The landform diversity and Quaternary deposits provide an opportunity to undertake a multidisciplinary approach for reconstructing the history of Quaternary climate and seismicity in the region.

Unified gravito-kinematics theory unifies gravity and kinematics on deeper level as current theories. It is generally compatible with quotations of General relativity, but it extends it and introduces different explanations to selected underlying principles on which is General relativity based. Unified gravito-kinematics theory explains or solves following open problems: primary cause and underlying mechanism of inertia, explanation of speed of light as speed limit, primary cause and underlying mechanism of relativity (Lorentz transformations), explanation of creation of rings of planets explanation of increasing speed of expansion of universe (dark energy), explanation of galaxy rotation problem, solving of some singularities in relativity theory and solution for compatibility of relativity theory with quantum mechanics, which will open door to merge of quantum mechanics and what is now relativity theory. What is most important, Unified gravito-kinematics theory makes very specific...

La produzione laterizia di Augusta Praetoria. Forme, tipi, bolli

Giordana Amabili

Leadership in the Philippines: How to Lead the Filipinos

January 19, 2012 Vic 3 Comments

Every country needs great leaders to attain its common goals, such as economic progress, national security and sustainable living for its citizens. That is why local and national elections of government officials and leaders are considered as among the most important events that happen in any nation. In the Philippines, poverty, crimes and corruption are still among the imminent problems that most Filipinos are grousing. These problems have already become so common that many Filipinos have already lost their hope of a great grand change. Instead of having a strong desire to join others in developing our nation, many of us have been stuck in making that goal only a dream.

Now, we all need to stop dreaming. Let us again transform that dream into a strong desire. Let’s put that desire in our heart – the heart that we can’t live without. A great leadership in the Philippines must become alive, and it’s never too late to start. If you’re a Filipino whose love is for his own country, you should learn how to lead the Filipinos. The following discussions shall guide all of us. Start leading the first Filipino that you can – yourself

Leadership is not only for mayors, governors, congressmen, senators or for the president. It’s not only for priests, famous artists or the business icons. Leadership is for all of us. You can be a leader of yourself. That is why if you want to lead the Filipinos, you should start by leading the nearest Filipino within your reach – you.  Corruption is not only happening in the government agencies or in the house of legislations. Corruption can also occur within us. There, it actually starts it all. Ask yourself why there are some people who succeed in life despite of the perhaps dirty politics that’s happening in our country. They actually live a better life despite of that. The reason is that they are not affected and corrupted by that external force of corruption. They are on their own uncorrupted selves which they have achieved through personal development. So how can you lead yourself anyway? Here are some things you can do to accomplish it.

– Lead yourself to finding your real talents and in developing it. – Lead yourself to learning good virtues, such as patience, diligence, kindness, generosity, compassion and humility. – Lead yourself to evaluating your current values and principles, and in correcting what’s wrong with them. – Lead yourself to a healthy lifestyle and in overcoming your vices. – Lead yourself to bringing your own business or profession to success. – Lead yourself to financial freedom. – Lead yourself to keeping honesty and integrity. – Lead yourself to loving God, your family, and our country. – Lead yourself to becoming a law abiding citizen. – Lead yourself to many other activities that can cause your self development. Analyze our national problems

If you have made yourself great and personally developed, you are now capable of becoming a selfless person. This is because you are now a stronger person who can prioritize others rather than yourself. You are now more capable of leading other Filipinos. To lead our countrymen, we need to find out the problems that our country is experiencing. We need to explore not only the problems that we see, but also the roots of these crises. Here’s how you can be aware of what’s wrong with the Philippines now.

– Watch, read and hear the news about the Philippines inside and out our country. You can do these with TV, radio, newspaper or the Internet. – Join and observe people’s discussions about what’s happening in our country. You can join forums and groups online, such as on Facebook or in Twitter. – Study economics – Learn the right politics. – Read our Philippine History and the previous governments. – Study the current laws and regulations in our country. – Look around you. – Talk and discuss with your friends, classmates and officemates any current issues about our country. – Do other things that will increase your awareness about the Philippines.

In other words, you should not ignore what’s happening with our nation. Remember that loving starts from knowing. Hence, if you want to love our country, you should start by knowing it. Know our country and analyze our problems. You can start it by gathering important data though the list above. We need to sacrifice our self-interest. If you spend more time in following the news about Lady Gaga, Britney Spears or Justine Bieber, why not start allocating more time on the news about the Philippine realities. If you are already bored and uninterested in hearing the current news, you can go back to our history or look forward to our future to get information that can be useful for our nation today. Discover solutions to those problems

After collecting information about our country and about us, it’s time to do something with those pieces of information. Leadership is not all about knowing, isn’t it? Thus we need to find solutions on those problems that we realize. But how? There are obvious crises that we are facing, such as poverty , war in Mindanao, street crimes, the possible destruction of our natural resources, overpopulation and corruption in the public offices. If we make researches, we can actually understand that the solutions to these problems are simple. It’s just not easy.

Because there can only be one president in our republic, it’s not practical to try to solve all of those problems above. What we can do is to choose the specific problem which we believe we can have the highest rate of success in solving it. For example if you’re an environmentalist, you can focus on protecting our environment. If you’re a businessman or an entrepreneur, you can concentrate on providing more jobs in the country. If you’re a financial expert, you can educate more Filipinos with financial literacy. If you’re a blogger, you can influence people online with nationalism. In other words, be an expert – be an expert servant. Test and practice those solutions

We need to ensure that we’re doing something right. That is why we need to not just promise ourselves to do them, but we need to actually execute them. For example, if you want to lead many Filipinos to good governance, you need to be a role model. You need to prove that you’re an effective leader. You need to show that you can indeed govern effectively even in just your small organization. The key to determining our effectiveness is to start doing what we need to do. Remember that as we go on, we will know what we need to change and improve. Therefore make your talk your walk. Influence other Filipinos

To better inflict a major change in our country, you need to expand your influence. This is because the more people you will convince the more force you can create. If you don’t have enough financial resources, you can use the Internet and the social media to widen your reach. Here are some ways on how you can leverage the social media to leading people into a common goal:

– Create a blog and post stories, images and videos that are related to your cause regularly. – Make a Facebook page and promote it to more people. Post your blog posts on your page. – Start a Facebook group, invite people and make it grow. – Create a Twitter account and also tweet your motivational messages, as well as the links to your blog posts. – Build your personal Facebook profile or timeline and attract more friends and subscribers. – Build a presence in Google+ and other popular social networking sites.

Nowadays, everyone who wants to promote something to a wider audience should not ignore the power of social media . Join forces with other leaders

It’s time to collaborate with other leaders who also want to bring our country to progress. We might have been in different and unique groups, but when it comes to uniting a nation, we should all go along to create a single force. Uniting with other organizations can help each group in strengthening their power. They can use each other to lift each other. This is the essence of collaboration, where everyone can enjoy their shared assets and resources. So if you are leading a group of people whose goal is to make our country clean and green, you can join forces with other groups, such as those in the financial, social, and spiritual groups. Conquer the problems and seize victory

It sounds pretty tough to accomplish, isn’t it? Of course it is. That is why we have discussed all the tough instructions above. But leadership is what it’s all about. And since our country is suffering from a difficult problem, we need leaders who can do the hard work. The hard work will actually start in developing ourselves – that’s what we’ve discussed at the top, right? It’s really tough to develop ourselves. The self-discipline, selflessness, compassion, kindness, generosity – those things are actually hard to achieve. But if we can overcome our own weakness, we can be stronger to conquer the problems of our society. The key to success is simply persistence, that is, we should not quit until we can claim our victory. Let’s not lose hope. Let’s try it all over again. Create new generation leaders to maintain success

We have a long way to reaching our nationalistic goals. But, if we become better leaders, we can lead a significant number of Filipinos to our righteous goals. We can also create our own success with the organizations we lead. And to reproduce and multiply that success, we should create new leaders. We should ensure that our legacy will be passed on to the new generations. This legacy is not about ourselves; it’s not about our fame or name. This legacy is about what we did. This legacy is about what the generations should be doing now and in the future.

Final thoughts

Making the Philippines as one of the most developed country in the world is such a difficult task. However, it is not impossible to realize. If our neighboring countries can make it, then why can’t we? I’m not proud to be a Filipino because I don’t want to give pride to my country. But I am honored to be a Filipino because I want to bring not pride, but honor and glory. In this kind of hard situation that our nation is facing, we don’t need pride. What we need is humility – the virtue we need to serve humbly. Yes, bringing our country to the top is such a tough mission. But if we will tell everyone we can’t accomplish a great goal like that, then it’s just the same as telling that there are already no great Filipinos that are living in our country today. I believe that there are still Filipinos who can raise their power to do the most difficult things for our country. I know that there are still many Filipinos in our time that can be great leaders. I believe that you are one of them.

Good governance is all around us, we just need the eyes to see it! Let’s raise our glasses to the people at the grassroots who are aiming for change from the ground up. It’s time to celebrate the best of Filipino leadership across all levels of government!

The news nowadays is full of negative reports about governance. But let’s not lose hope for our future, Pilipinas! In our desire for progress, let’s look at shining examples of good governance so we can use them as patterns of what promising leadership should be like.

Good News Pilipinas is developing a special series that showcases the good initiatives happening throughout the country. Explore the progressive projects nestled in the heart of Congress and the Executive, then take a trip to the cities and barangays of the Philippines that are positively changing the lives of their people! It’s time to see that good governance is not just an abstract ideal but a tangible reality – thriving right around us.

The First Step to Good Governance: Freedom of Information

Transparency and accountability are the launchpads from which good governance is drawn. The Freedom of Information Bill strives to make good governance a reality by promoting Filipinos’ right to know. Equipped with stronger access to information, Filipinos are empowered with the tools and knowledge to participate in community building, hold their government accountable, and contribute to the betterment of society!

More than Just a Walk in the Park: Iloilo City’s Tree Park Network

Green spaces equal better health for all! Iloilo City is paving the path for building open outdoor spaces with the upcoming Tree Park Network project. Stunning eco-parks and gardens are now in the works in Lanit, Jaro; Boulevard, Molo; and La Paz! With the project set to promote the native flora and fauna Iloilo has to offer, surely this will be a sight to behold.

Nutrition for All: Brgy. San Antonio’s Breastfeeding Project

Breastfeeding provides a wealth of benefits for both mother and child – but did you know that only 27% of Filipino children are exclusively breastfed, according to the National Institutes of Health? Brgy. San Antonio, Pasig City is seeking to increase this number through its Gatas ni Mommy, Ayuda for Family project. Lactating mommas can exchange their excess breast milk for kilos of rice, while low-income families, single fathers, and public hospitals can receive donated milk free of charge. Talk about a win-win!

On the Road Again: Expansion of Bike Lanes

Together, let’s work towards a less car-centric atmosphere! Protected bike lanes are slowly becoming more mainstream, with over 500 kilometers of lanes being built across Metro Manila, Cebu, and Davao in the past years. These bike lanes provide hope for a more diverse future for transportation and accessibility. Let’s get moving!

Marking Our Wins

With the Good Governance series, let’s commemorate what Filipino leadership has to offer. Let’s learn from the stories of people benefiting from these initiatives. Most importantly, let’s take their anecdotes to heart so we can be inspired to make the Philippines a better place. We aspire for good governance for a greater Pilipinas!

  • How to Structure a Leadership Essay (Samples to Consider)

Leadership is a complex concept, but it’s essential for boosting your career. That’s why a leadership essay focuses on applying the theoretical models and concepts of successful management to real-life situations.

If you don’t know where to start writing such a paper, please read on for professional tips!

What Is Leadership Essay?

A leadership essay is a paper that analyzes leadership concepts and their application to real-life situations that may involve everyday business management, crisis situations, and other scenarios.

Every essay on leadership is about defining a concept. Then, it’s either comparing it to similar management tools or proving that it’s useful (or not).

While some students enjoy writing such papers, other learners hate them. The below samples will come in handy, no matter which group is yours.

What Does Leadership Mean to You? (Essay Sample)

It is one of the most popular topics for a leadership essay. If you need to write a paper like that, ask yourself:

  • Who is a good leader?
  • What style do they use?
  • What are the situations when they might switch styles?

You may take a more personal approach to such an essay if your professor allows you to. In the example below, you will see the academic approach to this topic. It analyzes three leadership styles to discover which one corresponds to the meaning of leadership if one thinks of it as guidance and support.

Why I Want to Participate in a Leadership Program (Essay Sample)

It’s another example of a popular topic. Such papers often have a meaning beyond the classroom since they may decide whether you plan to participate in a specific program. It’s critical to make them as effective and compelling as possible.

A personalized approach is the best when it comes to essays like this. In the example below, you will see the paper that relies on individual beliefs and a personal life story to explain why it’s so important for the specific student to participate in the chosen program.

How to Write a Leadership Essay

Like every other essay, this paper has an introduction, several body paragraphs, and a conclusion summarizing your thoughts. (1) The most important part of the introduction is the final sentence,  aka  a thesis statement. That’s where you state your claim to prove or develop in your leadership essay.

Each body paragraph should correspond to the purpose of your essay. To ensure you don’t stray from the aim you’ve established in the thesis statement, write the topic sentences for all your paragraphs in the outline . In simple words, write the first sentence of every paragraph to define its development in advance and see if you cover everything you need.

And now, to the conclusion:

Its most essential element is thesis restatement or the first sentence of that paragraph. It’s not just paraphrasing your thesis; it’s also considering the new information you’ve discovered while writing the essay.

leadership-essay-structure

Structure :

  • Introduction (End it with a thesis statement.)
  • Body paragraphs (Each one starts with a topic sentence.)
  • Conclusion (Start it with a thesis restatement.)

Understand the purpose of a leadership essay

When starting to write, think about why you’re creating this paper. Before you sit down and type the words, think about the ideas you want to convey and their meaning in your life:

Can this essay teach you to take responsibility? Or maybe will it help you understand how to be a leader in crisis situations? When you’ve answered the “why” question, begin outlining.

Build a strong thesis

Always start with your thesis statement. It will help incorporate your answer to that notorious “why” question into your essay. Once done, you can plan out the rest of the paper and start working on the body paragraphs as soon as you finish the introduction.

There’s another important tip —don’t rush into writing the conclusion before you finish everything else!

It might seem like a good idea to create a thesis statement and thesis restatement right off the bat. However, you’ll find yourself with more refreshing ideas after completing all the research and thinking necessary for the introduction and each body paragraph.

Decide on a structure; format accordingly

Even if your essay about leadership seems not so formal, and you can use personal pronouns, you still need a clear structure.

The best way to write any academic paper is to keep your introduction and conclusion as short as possible. (But no shorter than three sentences and four lines of text).

Another important tip is to try making all your body paragraphs equal in length. That way, you’ll give the same attention to all the vital points of your essay.

Ready to Write Your Essay on Leadership Now?

Hopefully, this article has helped you understand the most critical elements of a leadership essay.

Remember the structure, grammar, and appropriate academic style to create a top-level paper. Please don’t forget to answer the “why” question and remember  why  you’re writing. Then you’ll impress everyone with your results!

6 Common Leadership Styles — and How to Decide Which to Use When

  • Rebecca Knight

leadership essay tagalog

Being a great leader means recognizing that different circumstances call for different approaches.

Research suggests that the most effective leaders adapt their style to different circumstances — be it a change in setting, a shift in organizational dynamics, or a turn in the business cycle. But what if you feel like you’re not equipped to take on a new and different leadership style — let alone more than one? In this article, the author outlines the six leadership styles Daniel Goleman first introduced in his 2000 HBR article, “Leadership That Gets Results,” and explains when to use each one. The good news is that personality is not destiny. Even if you’re naturally introverted or you tend to be driven by data and analysis rather than emotion, you can still learn how to adapt different leadership styles to organize, motivate, and direct your team.

Much has been written about common leadership styles and how to identify the right style for you, whether it’s transactional or transformational, bureaucratic or laissez-faire. But according to Daniel Goleman, a psychologist best known for his work on emotional intelligence, “Being a great leader means recognizing that different circumstances may call for different approaches.”

Fortune’s Best Companies to Work For credit trust and culture—not pay and benefits—for high employee satisfaction

Ed Bastian, CEO of Delta (ranked on Fortune's Best Places to Work list) says trust is "at the core of culture."

Good morning.  As the U.S. election heats up, many corporate leaders are backing down from their commitments to so-called “ESG” topics—climate, diversity, speaking out on social issues. They want to avoid being branded a “woke” CEO or getting caught in political crossfire.

But for the best companies, this discussion has never been about politics or adhering to some alphabet mandate. It’s about how you lead a great company in an economy where people are your most important asset and where engaging and inspiring people is the route to business success.

I spent an hour earlier this week with three of the best of this breed, in a webinar Fortune held in partnership with UKG , timed to the release of Fortune ’s 27th annual 100 Best Companies to Work For list. (You can find the list here .) Three CEOs ran companies on the list— Hilton (No. 1), Edward Jones (No. 31) and Delta (No. 94). But what I found interesting was that none of them focused on a splashy pay and benefit package, and indeed two of them achieved their success while recovering from the devastating effects of the pandemic.

How did they do it? Some excerpts from the conversation:

“ We used to write a lot about the perks. But what we know is that a great workplace is defined by trust— the trust that we have for the people that we work with. We want to be respected. We want to be communicated with in an honest way. We want to be treated in a fair and equitable way. We want to work with people that we enjoy working with and we expect leaders to add people to teams that are going to add to that enjoyment. And we want our work to have special meaning, which means, when we go to work, our personal purpose is somehow fulfilled by the work that we do. ”

—Michael Bush, CEO, Great Place to Work ( Fortune ‘s partner on the Best Companies list)

“ We’re in a service industry, and our job is delivering exceptional experiences to our customers all the time … If I want to do that, and I want to do it better than our competitors and deliver that  alpha . My team has to be inspired. They have to feel part of something bigger than them. They have to understand what the purpose is and understand how they fit into it and trust it. They have to feel good about it. And when they do feel good about it, they feel empowered. They give more effort, which translates into  alpha  and delivering better experiences for customers. ”

—Chris Nassetta, CEO, Hilton

“ Why are we here? Why do we get up every morning? Why do we continue to be resilient in the face of so many things that are changing for our clients and for us as professionals. Well, it’s because it really matters. It really matters in the lives of millions and millions of people that we are entrusted with their assets, with their hopes and dreams, with their financial plans. And so that trust, that human connection is very purposeful.  “

—Penny Pennington, Managing Partner, Edward Jones

“ Trust is foundational, as both Chris and Penny  expressed well. It sits at the core of culture. It sits at the core of our business. Our customers trust us with respect to their lives, you know. Every day we put 500,000 people on our planes, and we take the very best care of them to get them safely and comfortably to their destination, and we do it 5,000 flights a day, with over 100,000 employees scattered around the world. Our employees have to know we have their back .”

—Ed Bastian, CEO, Delta.

South Korea’s elections

South Korea voters rejected President Yoon Suk Yeol’s conservative party in legislative elections on Wednesday. Korea’s opposition Democratic Party is on track to win over 170 seats in the legislature, just short of a super majority that can override presidential vetoes. Yoon has tried to deepen Korea’s security relationships with partners like the U.S. and Japan, but has stumbled in implementing domestic policy changes, like tax cuts and eased business regulations.
