The habit of cleanliness should be taught to the children from the very childhood. The habits formed in early childhood continue for life. Clean surroundings lead to good health. Moreover, a clean workplace leads to higher productivity and efficiency in work.

This leads to success and development in work. Moreover, environmental cleanliness should be taught. This would develop respect towards the environment in the minds of the children. Hence, adults should tell them the many things that the environment does for us.  One who keeps every kind of cleanliness is a person of divinity, thus, praiseworthy.

Also, it provides greenery and life to everyone. Moreover, Narendra Modi has initiated a cleanliness campaign in the near past.

This was known by the name “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” or “Clean India Movement”. He focused on the sweeping of streets for maintaining cleanliness. Students must listen to his motivating speech on cleanliness. We all should try at our levels to be a part of such a good program.

We have all heard of the saying Cleanliness is next to Godliness, which means it is in clean places that God resides. Many would like to keep their houses clean but throw their household waste into the streets irresponsibly, which is harmful to the environment. 

When one thinks of cleanliness, it is important to understand that cleanliness can be explored on many levels. Personal cleanliness means maintaining personal hygiene on day to day basis in the ways like brushing your teeth twice a day, taking bath every day, keeping your hair tidy, making up your bed, cleaning your cupboard, wearing clean clothes, doing laundry regularly, eating clean by avoiding junk foods, tidying up your reading desk, and keeping your room clean. Personal cleanliness is very important in order to lead a healthy life. At the same time, it is important to be considerate of the environment we live in and take accountability to keep our surroundings clean as well. 

We must be aware of our surroundings and the harm it causes when we destroy it by making dirty littering plastics all around. Environment cleanliness is equally important, which is why our honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi has started a campaign to keep India clean by keeping our surroundings clean called “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.” It is our responsibility to make the Swachh Bharat Mission a successful one as this is also a responsibility towards our nation. Often when tourists visit India, they complain about the lack of cleanliness, leaking sewage, open defecation, and the lack of awareness to practice proper hygiene. This kind of attitude gives a wrong impression of India and Indians. 

There are so many steps already taken in the direction of the success of this mission, by making dustbins available on every street and by building public toilets, especially in villages. This practice will be helpful for our health as well. When one lives in unhygienic conditions, it is an invitation for diseases. Unhygienic conditions only serve as a breeding ground for more harmful bacteria and viruses. As we have learned during this pandemic due to the outbreak of a virus the only way to keep it afar is by staying neat and clean, always cleaning hands after touching a surface, and cleaning up after you come home from a long day of work. Cleanliness will keep you healthy, when you are healthy you are capable of taking healthy and fit decisions for yourself and lead an active life.

A cleaner lifestyle is helpful for you and everyone near you. So, when making these small changes, your life will also have a bigger impact. Share the same with your near and dear ones and help them to lead a clean and healthy life as well, and lead by being an example to them.

Our Surroundings

We all live in surrounding which includes living things and natural forces. Living things not only live in the surrounding but interact with it as well. They affect the surrounding and are affected by the surrounding. The places we live in consist of air, water, land, plants, animals and the micro- organisms; they all are part of environment. We depend upon our environment to fulfill our various needs such as oxygen, food and shelter etc. We must keep our surroundings neat and clean to live healthy life.

A Clean Environment

To stay healthy we need a clean environment. For a healthy living, two things are required, sanitation and hygiene. Hygiene means practice that we follow to stay healthy and clean. Sanitation means measure we adopt for improving and protecting health and well-being of ourselves.

Every household generates waste or garbage. We should not throw waste or garbage anywhere. Dirty surroundings help in the growth of germs that cause diseases, like cholera, typhoid, dengue etc. Dirty and stagnant water is the breeding ground of mosquitoes. Mosquitoes cause malaria.

Disposal of waste

Proper disposal of waste is necessary to keep our environment clean. Waste water from our houses should go through proper drainage system and should be treated before dumping it into water bodies such as sea or ocean. In metropolitan cities, there are huge underground pipelines that are connected to the main sewage line which passes through the treatment plant where waste water get treated by various method and then finally get disposed of.

Solid waste from houses such as vegetable peels, waste paper, plastic bags etc. should be thrown in covered garbage bins. Throwing of these solid wastes out of houses in open area cause piling of waste which attracts flies and germs and spread diseases. Open dumping of waste may cause land, air and water pollution.

Waste material such as fruits and vegetable peels, decomposes easily. These are called biodegradable materials. Biodegradable material can be disposed of making compost pits. Solid waste kept in pit turn into manure that can be used for crops. Many things like plastic, glasses etc. do not decompose. These are called non-biodegradable material.

The three R’s – Reduce – Rescue – Recycle

How we manage waste affect our environment and environment in turn affects us. The waste we create has to be carefully managed so that it does not harm our environment and our health. Practicing of three R’s will help us to keep our surrounding clean and healthy.  

Reduce Waste

This means to use less.

Use of water and power wisely - We can save electricity by not using it unnecessarily and can save water by closing water tap when it is not in use.

This means using things again.

     1.    Carry old plastic or cloth or jute bags to the grocery store for reuse.

     2.    Plastic or glass container in which we buy things can be used to store other products at home.

     3.    Material can be donated to the people who could use them in its original form.

     4.    Carry washable glass or cup instead of using disposable cups.

Many materials such as paper, glass, aluminum, plastic etc. can be recycled to make useful things out of them. Recycling means treating or processing material in certain way, so that it can be used again.

Benefit of Recycling:

     1.    By recycling paper we need to cut fewer trees to make newspaper.  Hence we can save our natural environment by cutting fewer trees.

     2.    We can save energy, as factories needs energy/power to make new things.

     3.    We save the environment by reducing the amount of waste produced by the factories.

Steps that help in keeping our environment clean and healthy:-

     1.    We must keep our house and its surrounding clean.

     2.    We should not throw garbage out on the road.

     3.    All the drains should be kept covered.

     4.    Save paper by writing on both sides.

     5.    Recycle material such as toys, books, etc.

     6.    Make use of the recycle bin, for paper and cardboard at home and work place.

     7.    Use water and power judiciously.

Neat and clean environment has a cheerful effect. It is a sure sign of civilization. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to receive education. Our responsibility is to helpkeep our town clean. We ought to develop civic sense. A clean town hints on the people living as respectable, responsible and intelligent. Therefore it is verynecessary to keep a town clean. there are a lot of ways to do that but first in is to start from each house.

To see the change at the global level, we need to act at the local level. Acting at the local level only needs a sense of initiative. And in this way, A clean home will lead to a clean street, a clean street will lead to acity, a clean state will lead to clean nation and aclean nation will lead to a clean and a healthy Alma Mater…

Dustbins should be placed in front of each house where passers by can throw in their litter and the occupants themselves can throw that along with their daily garbage into the community dustbin or van be towed by a municipal corporation van/truck. Every school can install a handy ‘paper recycling machine’ as the school generates lots of waste paper in form of charts, answer books, other decorative sheets etc. We should ensure that dog foul is collected in a poop pack and be responsible pet owners. Students should be encouraged to use notebooks that are made of bagasse and handmade sheets/charts etc. Every public/school transport should be installed with an attachable dustbin so that it doesn’t overturns and the passengers need not throw garbage outside the vehicle’s windows.

Set a good example and don't litter. Besides the fact that you won't be contributing to the trash on the ground, other people may see what you do and follow suit. If your town is always plagued by litter, organize a town cleanup. This can be done by schools, churches, clubs, or any other groups of people willing to help pick up the litter.

If you feel there aren't enough trash cans around town or that your town doesn't have a good recycling program, write to the appropriate people to let them know. Instead of buying new pens, we can use refill the ink in the old ones. This will reduce production of waste. Esteemed Daily like ‘The Hindu’ and paper printing agencies like ‘Classmate’ make use of recycled paper. Lead free paints are introduced in the market. We can encourage their efforts by being a consumer to these products. Try carpooling or public transportation, and if you smoke, try to quit. To help prevent water pollution, only flush or pour things down the sink that will not damage the water supply; avoid putting paint, old medications, glue, and other potentially damaging items down the sink or toilet. Learn what the appropriate ways of disposing of these things are. We should avoid using deodorants since they are a source of air pollution and release CFCs into the environment.

As citizens we should work in tandem with the municipal corporation of our area and also act as watchdogs and report the misdemeanor of the corporation. We should reduce the consumption of ‘paper napkins/tissues’ or ‘toilet papers’ The reason for such action is necessary so that people who take cleanliness for granted should be reminded that their dirtiness can have harmful effects on themselves plus on the people living around them.

Seattle Public Utilities fosters healthy people and environment by working with you to manage our waste and water. We invite you to learn more about ways you can get involved and about how your public utility is protecting the environment 365 days each year.  

• Adopt a Street : Volunteer-run litter and graffiti removal program. 
• Steward our trees : Become a Seattle Tree Steward and preserve trees around Seattle’s urban forest. 
• Care for your storm drain: Reduce water pollution and flooding by raking leaves, stenciling storm drains, and/or Adopting a Drain! 
• Request a free pollution prevention spill kit: We provide free kits and spill prevention plans to Seattle businesses who need help complying with stormwater regulations.

Sanco leads the way in a clean-up campaign

Sanco held a clean-up campaign to raise awareness of the need for a clean environment in the community of alexandra..

More than 40 community members volunteered to be part of the clean-up awareness campaign hosted by the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) at Tsutsumani behind Alex Mall.

The campaign aimed to raise awareness about the importance of environmental protection and conservation. It was also an opportunity to educate people about recycling and reducing waste.

The chairperson of Sanco Dumisani Nkosi said it is everyone’s responsibility to keep the community clean and safe.

“This campaign serves as an educational awareness where the community can empower themselves instead of relying on community organisations or government. We have a huge problem of illegal dumping taking place because we find furniture and rubble on the open field, as well as normal household refuse.

“Our appeal for the clean-up awareness campaign is for our community to get involved to take pride in their environment because they live here and do not tolerate outsiders or even neighbours dumping dirt in the environment.

He added that this campaign is an important step in raising awareness about the importance of cleanliness and sustainability making sure that our neighborhoods are free from litter and debris because a clean environment is a healthy environment.

Volunteers from Sanco and the community members worked together to clean up streets, parks and open spaces. They collected litter and removed grass from the paths where people walk.

The project manager of Rekganyeng Leseding Development Initiatives Jankey Matlala said they want the residents to be responsible for taking care of their community.

“The reason we hold this campaign is to educate the community to keep their environment clean to protect themselves from diseases caused by rubbish.

“We want people to take care of themselves by keeping their environment clean at all times and by not throwing litter and papers anywhere. Today we are cleaning outside the mall because it does not make sense when it is clean inside the mall while it’s dirt outside,” Matlala said.

One of the volunteers who participated in the campaign Maria Ntshane said “It is great to see so many people come together to make a difference in the community because our environment is very dirty and the government is doing nothing about it.

“We decided to clean up on our own because it does not make sense when we are staying in clean homes while the outside is dirty and the clean environment means healthy lives.”
