Advice for students regarding Turnitin and AI writing detection

On 5 April 2023, Turnitin launched a new tool that identifies material that has potentially been written by artificial intelligence (AI) software (eg ChatGPT). The tool is in the early stages of development and is currently only available in staff view – this setting cannot be changed by the University.

How reliable is the tool?

This is an early release of the tool which the University has chosen to deploy so that we can thoroughly test it and actively provide input to Turnitin on its design.

The tool looks for English language patterns it scores as likely generated from an AI source and produces a conservative identification of AI written content. The scores per sentence and across groups of sentences assigned by the tool must collectively reach a high confidence threshold (98%) before they are flagged as likely having been written by AI.

This means that if the tool indicates that 40% of the overall text has been AI-generated, it is 98% confident that is the case. The University, along with others in the sector, are seeking more detail on the sensitivity and specificity of this model and how confidence intervals are calculated as well as conducting our own tests on its reliability. This information will be publicly shared as it becomes available.

What will the University do if the tool reports a high score for submitted work?

As with the similarity report generated by Turnitin, the result of the AI writing detector tool is a prompt for further investigation.

Should there be a suspicion that part or all of your submitted assessment has been produced using generative AI, you may be asked to explain your essay and argument (how you developed the argument, what sources you used, how you reached the conclusion you did), or to provide drafts or notes of early versions of the assessment.

The Turnitin AI writing detector is a new tool and has only been in use at the University since Semester 1, 2023. This may mean that the tool incorrectly identifies some assessments as having been produced by AI when they have not. Should you be asked to discuss or explain components of your assessment task, understand that this, alone, is not an accusation of academic misconduct. The AI writing detector score would not normally be used as the only evidence to raise an allegation of academic misconduct – but it might be one of several indicators.

When is it OK to use AI tools?

The acceptable use of AI will vary across disciplines, subjects, and assessment tasks. Your subject coordinator will provide this information, but it is your responsibility to check the assessment guidelines and relevant policies, and to understand what is expected of you. Resources on academic integrity are available to you through your subject’s LMS site, Academic Skills , and the Library .

If an assessment task does permit the use of AI tools and technologies in the preparation of the submission, this usage must be appropriately acknowledged and cited in accordance with the Assessment and Results Policy (MPF1326) .

If an assessment task does not permit the use of such tools, or if you use such tools in the preparation of an assessment submission without acknowledgement, this is academic misconduct. In accordance with the Student Academic Integrity Policy (MPF1310) , any student who commits academic misconduct is subject to the penalties outlined in the Schedule of Student Academic Misconduct Penalties .

As other tools to detect the use of AI become available, the University will consider adopting their use. Work submitted for assessment is subject to checking through these tools at any stage. This includes in the years following graduation, and the University has the right to amend marks or rescind degrees should academic misconduct be found at any stage.

If you grow up to be a professional writer, everything you write will first go through an editor before being published. This is because the process of writing is really a process of re-writing —of rethinking and reexamining your work, usually with the help of someone else. So what does this mean for your student writing? And in particular, what does it mean for very important, but nonprofessional writing like your college essay? Should you ask your parents to look at your essay? Pay for an essay service?

If you are wondering what kind of help you can, and should, get with your personal statement, you've come to the right place! In this article, I'll talk about what kind of writing help is useful, ethical, and even expected for your college admission essay . I'll also point out who would make a good editor, what the differences between editing and proofreading are, what to expect from a good editor, and how to spot and stay away from a bad one.

What's next, what kind of help with your essay can you get.

Rather than talking in general terms about "help," let's first clarify the two different ways that someone else can improve your writing . There is editing, which is the more intensive kind of assistance that you can use throughout the whole process. And then there's proofreading, which is the last step of really polishing your final product.

Let me go into some more detail about editing and proofreading, and then explain how good editors and proofreaders can help you."

Editing is helping the author (in this case, you) go from a rough draft to a finished work . Editing is the process of asking questions about what you're saying, how you're saying it, and how you're organizing your ideas. But not all editing is good editing . In fact, it's very easy for an editor to cross the line from supportive to overbearing and over-involved.

Ability to clarify assignments. A good editor is usually a good writer, and certainly has to be a good reader. For example, in this case, a good editor should make sure you understand the actual essay prompt you're supposed to be answering.

Open-endedness. Good editing is all about asking questions about your ideas and work, but without providing answers. It's about letting you stick to your story and message, and doesn't alter your point of view.

Think of an editor as a great travel guide. It can show you the many different places your trip could take you. It should explain any parts of the trip that could derail your trip or confuse the traveler. But it never dictates your path, never forces you to go somewhere you don't want to go, and never ignores your interests so that the trip no longer seems like it's your own. So what should good editors do?

Help Brainstorm Topics

Sometimes it's easier to bounce thoughts off of someone else. This doesn't mean that your editor gets to come up with ideas, but they can certainly respond to the various topic options you've come up with. This way, you're less likely to write about the most boring of your ideas, or to write about something that isn't actually important to you.

Help Revise Your Drafts

Here, your editor can't upset the delicate balance of not intervening too much or too little. It's tricky, but a great way to think about it is to remember: editing is about asking questions, not giving answers .

Revision questions should point out:

• Places where more detail or more description would help the reader connect with your essay
• Places where structure and logic don't flow, losing the reader's attention
• Places where there aren't transitions between paragraphs, confusing the reader
• Moments where your narrative or the arguments you're making are unclear

But pointing to potential problems is not the same as actually rewriting—editors let authors fix the problems themselves.

Bad editing is usually very heavy-handed editing. Instead of helping you find your best voice and ideas, a bad editor changes your writing into their own vision.

You may be dealing with a bad editor if they:

• Add material (examples, descriptions) that doesn't come from you
• Use a thesaurus to make your college essay sound "more mature"
• Add meaning or insight to the essay that doesn't come from you
• Tell you what to say and how to say it
• Write sentences, phrases, and paragraphs for you
• Change your voice in the essay so it no longer sounds like it was written by a teenager

Colleges can tell the difference between a 17-year-old's writing and a 50-year-old's writing. Not only that, they have access to your SAT or ACT Writing section, so they can compare your essay to something else you wrote. Writing that's a little more polished is great and expected. But a totally different voice and style will raise questions.

Where's the Line Between Helpful Editing and Unethical Over-Editing?

Sometimes it's hard to tell whether your college essay editor is doing the right thing. Here are some guidelines for staying on the ethical side of the line.

• An editor should say that the opening paragraph is kind of boring, and explain what exactly is making it drag. But it's overstepping for an editor to tell you exactly how to change it.
• An editor should point out where your prose is unclear or vague. But it's completely inappropriate for the editor to rewrite that section of your essay.
• An editor should let you know that a section is light on detail or description. But giving you similes and metaphors to beef up that description is a no-go.

Proofreading (also called copy-editing) is checking for errors in the last draft of a written work. It happens at the end of the process and is meant as the final polishing touch. Proofreading is meticulous and detail-oriented, focusing on small corrections. It sands off all the surface rough spots that could alienate the reader.

Because proofreading is usually concerned with making fixes on the word or sentence level, this is the only process where someone else can actually add to or take away things from your essay . This is because what they are adding or taking away tends to be one or two misplaced letters.

Laser focus. Proofreading is all about the tiny details, so the ability to really concentrate on finding small slip-ups is a must.

Excellent grammar and spelling skills. Proofreaders need to dot every "i" and cross every "t." Good proofreaders should correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar. They should put foreign words in italics and surround quotations with quotation marks. They should check that you used the correct college's name, and that you adhered to any formatting requirements (name and date at the top of the page, uniform font and size, uniform spacing).

Limited interference. A proofreader needs to make sure that you followed any word limits. But if cuts need to be made to shorten the essay, that's your job and not the proofreader's.

A bad proofreader either tries to turn into an editor, or just lacks the skills and knowledge necessary to do the job.

Some signs that you're working with a bad proofreader are:

• If they suggest making major changes to the final draft of your essay. Proofreading happens when editing is already finished.
• If they aren't particularly good at spelling, or don't know grammar, or aren't detail-oriented enough to find someone else's small mistakes.
• If they start swapping out your words for fancier-sounding synonyms, or changing the voice and sound of your essay in other ways. A proofreader is there to check for errors, not to take the 17-year-old out of your writing.

What Do Colleges Think of Your Getting Help With Your Essay?

Admissions officers agree: light editing and proofreading are good—even required ! But they also want to make sure you're the one doing the work on your essay. They want essays with stories, voice, and themes that come from you. They want to see work that reflects your actual writing ability, and that focuses on what you find important.

On the Importance of Editing

Get feedback. Have a fresh pair of eyes give you some feedback. Don't allow someone else to rewrite your essay, but do take advantage of others' edits and opinions when they seem helpful. ( Bates College )

Read your essay aloud to someone. Reading the essay out loud offers a chance to hear how your essay sounds outside your head. This exercise reveals flaws in the essay's flow, highlights grammatical errors and helps you ensure that you are communicating the exact message you intended. ( Dickinson College )

On the Value of Proofreading

Share your essays with at least one or two people who know you well—such as a parent, teacher, counselor, or friend—and ask for feedback. Remember that you ultimately have control over your essays, and your essays should retain your own voice, but others may be able to catch mistakes that you missed and help suggest areas to cut if you are over the word limit. Proofread and then ask someone else to proofread for you. Although we want substance, we also want to be able to see that you can write a paper for our professors and avoid careless mistakes that would drive them crazy. ( Oberlin College )

On Watching Out for Too Much Outside Influence

Limit the number of people who review your essay. Too much input usually means your voice is lost in the writing style. ( Carleton College )

Ask for input (but not too much). Your parents, friends, guidance counselors, coaches, and teachers are great people to bounce ideas off of for your essay. They know how unique and spectacular you are, and they can help you decide how to articulate it. Keep in mind, however, that a 45-year-old lawyer writes quite differently from an 18-year-old student, so if your dad ends up writing the bulk of your essay, we're probably going to notice. Now let's talk about some potential people to approach for your college essay editing and proofreading needs. It's best to start close to home and slowly expand outward. Not only are your family and friends more invested in your success than strangers, but they also have a better handle on your interests and personality. This knowledge is key for judging whether your essay is expressing your true self.

Parents or Close Relatives

Your family may be full of potentially excellent editors! Parents are deeply committed to your well-being, and family members know you and your life well enough to offer details or incidents that can be included in your essay. On the other hand, the rewriting process necessarily involves criticism, which is sometimes hard to hear from someone very close to you.

A parent or close family member is a great choice for an editor if you can answer "yes" to the following questions. Is your parent or close relative a good writer or reader? Do you have a relationship where editing your essay won't create conflict? Are you able to constructively listen to criticism and suggestion from the parent?

One suggestion for defusing face-to-face discussions is to try working on the essay over email. Send your parent a draft, have them write you back some comments, and then you can pick which of their suggestions you want to use and which to discard.

Teachers or Tutors

A humanities teacher that you have a good relationship with is a great choice. I am purposefully saying humanities, and not just English, because teachers of Philosophy, History, Anthropology, and any other classes where you do a lot of writing, are all used to reviewing student work.

Moreover, any teacher or tutor that has been working with you for some time, knows you very well and can vet the essay to make sure it "sounds like you."

If your teacher or tutor has some experience with what college essays are supposed to be like, ask them to be your editor. If not, then ask whether they have time to proofread your final draft.

Guidance or College Counselor at Your School

The best thing about asking your counselor to edit your work is that this is their job. This means that they have a very good sense of what colleges are looking for in an application essay.

At the same time, school counselors tend to have relationships with admissions officers in many colleges, which again gives them insight into what works and which college is focused on what aspect of the application.

Unfortunately, in many schools the guidance counselor tends to be way overextended. If your ratio is 300 students to 1 college counselor, you're unlikely to get that person's undivided attention and focus. It is still useful to ask them for general advice about your potential topics, but don't expect them to be able to stay with your essay from first draft to final version.

Friends, Siblings, or Classmates

Although they most likely don't have much experience with what colleges are hoping to see, your peers are excellent sources for checking that your essay is you .

Friends and siblings are perfect for the read-aloud edit. Read your essay to them so they can listen for words and phrases that are stilted, pompous, or phrases that just don't sound like you.

You can even trade essays and give helpful advice on each other's work.

If your editor hasn't worked with college admissions essays very much, no worries! Any astute and attentive reader can still greatly help with your process. But, as in all things, beginners do better with some preparation.

First, your editor should read our advice about how to write a college essay introduction , how to spot and fix a bad college essay , and get a sense of what other students have written by going through some admissions essays that worked .

Then, as they read your essay, they can work through the following series of questions that will help them to guide you.

Introduction Questions

• Is the first sentence a killer opening line? Why or why not?
• Does the introduction hook the reader? Does it have a colorful, detailed, and interesting narrative? Or does it propose a compelling or surprising idea?
• Can you feel the author's voice in the introduction, or is the tone dry, dull, or overly formal? Show the places where the voice comes through.

Essay Body Questions

• Does the essay have a through-line? Is it built around a central argument, thought, idea, or focus? Can you put this idea into your own words?
• How is the essay organized? By logical progression? Chronologically? Do you feel order when you read it, or are there moments where you are confused or lose the thread of the essay?
• Does the essay have both narratives about the author's life and explanations and insight into what these stories reveal about the author's character, personality, goals, or dreams? If not, which is missing?
• Does the essay flow? Are there smooth transitions/clever links between paragraphs? Between the narrative and moments of insight?

Reader Response Questions

• Does the writer's personality come through? Do we know what the speaker cares about? Do we get a sense of "who he or she is"?
• Where did you feel most connected to the essay? Which parts of the essay gave you a "you are there" sensation by invoking your senses? What moments could you picture in your head well?
• Where are the details and examples vague and not specific enough?
• Did you get an "a-ha!" feeling anywhere in the essay? Is there a moment of insight that connected all the dots for you? Is there a good reveal or "twist" anywhere in the essay?
• What are the strengths of this essay? What needs the most improvement?

Should You Pay Money for Essay Editing?

One alternative to asking someone you know to help you with your college essay is the paid editor route. There are two different ways to pay for essay help: a private essay coach or a less personal editing service , like the many proliferating on the internet.

My advice is to think of these options as a last resort rather than your go-to first choice. I'll first go through the reasons why. Then, if you do decide to go with a paid editor, I'll help you decide between a coach and a service.

When to Consider a Paid Editor

In general, I think hiring someone to work on your essay makes a lot of sense if none of the people I discussed above are a possibility for you.

If you can't ask your parents. For example, if your parents aren't good writers, or if English isn't their first language. Or if you think getting your parents to help is going create unnecessary extra conflict in your relationship with them (applying to college is stressful as it is!)

If you can't ask your teacher or tutor. Maybe you don't have a trusted teacher or tutor that has time to look over your essay with focus. Or, for instance, your favorite humanities teacher has very limited experience with college essays and so won't know what admissions officers want to see.

If you can't ask your guidance counselor. This could be because your guidance counselor is way overwhelmed with other students.

If you can't share your essay with those who know you. It might be that your essay is on a very personal topic that you're unwilling to share with parents, teachers, or peers. Just make sure it doesn't fall into one of the bad-idea topics in our article on bad college essays .

If the cost isn't a consideration. Many of these services are quite expensive, and private coaches even more so. If you have finite resources, I'd say that hiring an SAT or ACT tutor (whether it's PrepScholar or someone else) is better way to spend your money . This is because there's no guarantee that a slightly better essay will sufficiently elevate the rest of your application, but a significantly higher SAT score will definitely raise your applicant profile much more.

Should You Hire an Essay Coach?

On the plus side, essay coaches have read dozens or even hundreds of college essays, so they have experience with the format. Also, because you'll be working closely with a specific person, it's more personal than sending your essay to a service, which will know even less about you.

But, on the minus side, you'll still be bouncing ideas off of someone who doesn't know that much about you . In general, if you can adequately get the help from someone you know, there is no advantage to paying someone to help you.

If you do decide to hire a coach, ask your school counselor, or older students that have used the service for recommendations. If you can't afford the coach's fees, ask whether they can work on a sliding scale —many do. And finally, beware those who guarantee admission to your school of choice—essay coaches don't have any special magic that can back up those promises.

Should You Send Your Essay to a Service?

On the plus side, essay editing services provide a similar product to essay coaches, and they cost significantly less . If you have some assurance that you'll be working with a good editor, the lack of face-to-face interaction won't prevent great results.

On the minus side, however, it can be difficult to gauge the quality of the service before working with them . If they are churning through many application essays without getting to know the students they are helping, you could end up with an over-edited essay that sounds just like everyone else's. In the worst case scenario, an unscrupulous service could send you back a plagiarized essay.

Getting recommendations from friends or a school counselor for reputable services is key to avoiding heavy-handed editing that writes essays for you or does too much to change your essay. Including a badly-edited essay like this in your application could cause problems if there are inconsistencies. For example, in interviews it might be clear you didn't write the essay, or the skill of the essay might not be reflected in your schoolwork and test scores.

Should You Buy an Essay Written by Someone Else?

Let me elaborate. There are super sketchy places on the internet where you can simply buy a pre-written essay. Don't do this!

For one thing, you'll be lying on an official, signed document. All college applications make you sign a statement saying something like this:

I certify that all information submitted in the admission process—including the application, the personal essay, any supplements, and any other supporting materials—is my own work, factually true, and honestly presented... I understand that I may be subject to a range of possible disciplinary actions, including admission revocation, expulsion, or revocation of course credit, grades, and degree, should the information I have certified be false. (From the Common Application )

For another thing, if your academic record doesn't match the essay's quality, the admissions officer will start thinking your whole application is riddled with lies.

Admission officers have full access to your writing portion of the SAT or ACT so that they can compare work that was done in proctored conditions with that done at home. They can tell if these were written by different people. Not only that, but there are now a number of search engines that faculty and admission officers can use to see if an essay contains strings of words that have appeared in other essays—you have no guarantee that the essay you bought wasn't also bought by 50 other students.

• You should get college essay help with both editing and proofreading
• A good editor will ask questions about your idea, logic, and structure, and will point out places where clarity is needed
• A good editor will absolutely not answer these questions, give you their own ideas, or write the essay or parts of the essay for you
• A good proofreader will find typos and check your formatting
• All of them agree that getting light editing and proofreading is necessary
• Parents, teachers, guidance or college counselor, and peers or siblings
• If you can't ask any of those, you can pay for college essay help, but watch out for services or coaches who over-edit you work
• Don't buy a pre-written essay! Colleges can tell, and it'll make your whole application sound false.

All of us, for sure, will definitely agree to the fact that the kinship between us and our kinder garden teachers could not be well-defined. I like my nursery teacher, so much. There is something very magical about her. Maybe, she was the first teacher in my life or maybe, she was very sweet in talking to all of us, I am unable to portray why she is always my favourite. I relied on her blindly.

Unforgettable Memories:

I have some cherished memories with my teacher. Whenever I think of those memories, it makes me blissful. On the last day of my nursery school, I started crying at the very thought of leaving her and having a new teacher. I had fallen sick due to crying for hours together. I skipped my food. My parents were not able to do anything. They called for her to make me feel better. My teacher travelled a few miles across the city and reached the hospital. She, then, said that she would never forget any of her students and asked me to write to her. I started writing to her every week from then on and she replied to every letter of mine. Till date, I look at my teacher as my second mother and she guides me in all my difficult situations.

Conclusion:

Having a good teacher who can share an amalgamated relationship with the students is a boon. A good teacher should be a good mentor, a philosopher, a guide, a friend and above all a surrogate parent to the children. I am lucky that I had gotten one in my lifetime.

My favorite subject is English and my most favorite teacher is Chitra Ma’am. She teaches us English. She likes me a lot and appreciates my hard work. She joined our school one year ago. Before that, I was not so good at English. But after attending her classes, we have all become much better at this subject.

I like her for many reasons. First of all, she teaches the lessons in a very interesting way. Even when we have doubts or questions, she never gets upset with us. Her best quality is her loving nature. She would come to school daily without missing a day.

Her dressing sense is nice. She wears simple salwar suits. She always speaks to her students softly and respectfully. I eagerly wait for her class and do my English homework on time. Chitra Ma’am puts a lot of effort in explaining every chapter.

There are many activities given at the end of every lesson and she makes us participate in all of them. Not only that, but she also encourages us to take part in drama and poem competitions. Since her first day, she made a rule for us.

All of us has to speak in English during the English period. Every student tries to talk in English even if the sentence sounds improper. She has taught us to never laugh at each other’s mistakes. This has improved our spoken English in a great way. Now, we are able to talk in English with more confidence.

Another great quality of hers is that she treats every child equally. After explaining the lesson to us, she asks each one of us different questions about the chapter. Sometimes, we also love to talk about our personal lives, like what do we like about our lives, how our parents work hard for us, and things like that.

When we get confused or need an emotional support, she is the best person to talk to. Her advice and suggestions are always positive. Last month, on teacher’s day, all the students wished her and brought presents for her. We also sang a song to her.

I made a beautiful greeting card for her and a red rose with it. She accepted it with a smile and thanked us for everything. I feel grateful to have such a gentle and great teacher in my life who supports me in every way.

In school, you tend to interact with a lot of people who can either impact your life positively or negatively. A teacher is one neutral person who will manage to strike a balance between the positive and the negative. Teachers have a huge responsibility that we students may not understand. All in all our teachers try their best to provide an education, guidance and discipline despite the challenges we might impose on them. The life of a student is entirely dependent on a teacher because most of their time is spent in school rather than with parents that is why teachers play a major role in shaping the lives of young children through school.

Who Is my favourite Teacher?

I have several teachers now that I am in high school but there is only one whom I can relate to as “the teacher” because of the impact he has made in my life. The teacher is male, of Indian origin and has a funny accent when he speaks. He is married and has three children. Actually, one of his children is my age and I know him through tennis practice because he comes to train with us sometimes. I like him because his sense of humor gives a good learning experience for the students. He is a math teacher and he is very good at what he does. Students tend to make fun of him because of his accent but he make fun of it himself, which gets even funnier. This teacher has been a great mentor to me and other student ever since we joined high school. I met him on a personal level one day after class when I needed clarification on a topic I had not quite understood. The teacher was kind to me and guided me through it. Since then, he took his own initiative to do follow-ups on me and I became really good in math due to his efforts.

Coincidentally, he also coaches my tennis team and we meet out on the field. We have won several awards as a tennis team under him. I feel connected to the teacher through his mentorship and he has become like a school parent to me because whenever I have an issue, he is free to help me out.

How the teacher has impacted my life in school .

Mentorship goes along way depending on the approach used. When I first joined high school, I did not have much confidence in myself. This teacher mentored me and made me believe in myself. The good thing is the attention he gives t is students because most of the times, he follows up on the performances and ensures that he does everything he can to help students improve academically. He has also been a role model to me through his way of doing things. He is dedicated to his work and he is an achiever. Through following his footsteps, I have been able to dedicate myself into studies and sports, which has helped me to achieve my goals.

In conclusion, good teachers are hard to find but when you find one, make the most out of them.

The word “teacher” depicts a person that teaches. English dictionary defines teacher as “a person who teaches, especially one employed in a school”. A more recent definition of teacher in the linguistics field is “a tutor that interacts with the learners in order to facilitate good learning”.

Types of Teachers

Old method teachers: the teachers found under this method adopt the rigid mode of impartation of knowledge. They control the class the way a king would rule over his subjects. Old method teachers are less concerned about the welfare of their learners, they are syllabus-oriented.

New method teachers: the tutors under this model are student-oriented. They are more concerned about their learners and their various levels of understanding. They accept and promote contributions in class unlike the old method teachers. New method teachers encourage the inquisitiveness of their students.

Attributes of a Teacher:

A standard teacher has all or most of the various characters imbedded in them:

• Compassionate
• Open-minded
• A good counselor
• Friendly and most importantly
• Approachable.

Attributes of My Favorite Teacher:

Personally, I see my teacher as a mini-god because he leaves his mark on me. He influences my life in ways that enables me affect changes wherever I find myself.

He is a perfect example of the new model teachers. Basically, he is student-oriented. In the classroom, he employs the Eclectic mode of teaching (this is the combination of all the modes of teaching “discussion mode, play way mode, role play mode, question mode” so as to facilitate standard learning).

He comes into the classroom; starts the lecture with a recap of what was discussed in the previous class, gives room for the students to ask questions that arose from the last class, answers them and then starts a new topic.

To start a new topic, he starts with a mind-capturing introduction that attracts the attention of all students. Once he is through with introducing the topic, he gauges our reaction in order for him to know if his students are on the same page with him or left behind.

Then, he moves on to the discussion mode of teaching, whereby he throws questions to his students and accommodates both relevant and irrelevant answers, at the end of this model, he sieves through the answers provided, pick the relevant ones and add his own iota to it, he also always applaud the courage of all who answers his questions.

He moves either into the role play method or the play way method, here he selects students to either act out the lessons from the day’s topic or summarizes what he has taught for the day. The use of this particular mode enlightens the students more on the topic being discussed.

Finally, he moves over to the questions and revision mode, where he personally go through all he has taught over the course of the period. During this mode, he entertains questions from students on their personal areas of difficulties. Occasionally, he gives assignments to back up his teachings.

During his teachings, he pays close attention to the expression, mood, sitting posture and carriage of his students. This tells him when his students are lost, sad, worried, hungry, sick, away in dream land or simply tired.

Once he is done processing the information gotten from our faces, he either finds a way of brightening the mood of his students, bringing them back from the dream world, or ending his class without breaking his stride or alerting the whole population of students to what is currently going on.

It is only normal for a human being to reflect his mood whenever he is talking or interacting, but my teacher hardly ever allow his bad, horrible moods interfere with his teachings.

Outside the classroom, my teacher is approachable, fatherly, and jovial. He entertains all and no one is excluded from his open arms, smiles and affections.

He is a good counselor who is always ready to help me out of my tight corners. He gives twenty first century advises in a fatherly way.

Although, due to my teachers lenient ways with students, some students tend to be lazy, disrespectful, stubborn or rude. He has a way of being firm, maintaining class control while teaching.

In conclusion, my teacher has all the attributes and more of a new method teachers. He is capable of combining all modes of teaching, he is compassionate, passionate, and friendly. From my interactions with him, I can confidently say that he is one of the best teachers around.

A good teacher is a blessing for the students in their early years and helps them understand the world; learn moral values along with education. Most importantly, a teacher helps you the art of survival and brings out the best of you.

During my formative years, I have come across many teachers who have influenced my life for the better. Her teachings have been so powerful and impactful that I can still feel them during my day to day decisions even today.

Ms Kirti was my class educator as well and took participation in the daily activities with us as well. She was a strict instructor anyway extremely amusing and mind in nature. At the same time, she was extremely restrained and dependable. She did her work perfectly with the class at a perfect time without getting late. I liked her, particularly as she attempted simple approaches to show us beneficial things. We made the most of her class. She taught us English subject as well. She even made us giggle by telling heaps of jokes in the middle of when she taught. Any time you copy, borrow, or quote someone and don't give them credit, you are plagiarizing. Any time you turn in something that was written by someone else and pass it off as your own writing, you are plagiarizing.

Truth be told, it's pretty easy to accidentally use a paragraph or sentence from some other source and forget to footnote it.

Once you have a clear understanding of the topic, all you can really do is go to your teacher and point out that your intentions were honest. If you did accidentally forget to include a source, fess up. Don't try to build a case when you know you don't have one. Explain the oversight, or your mistake, and assure your teacher that it wasn't intentional. Be honest, and then all you can do is hope for mercy. Maybe your teacher will be a bit forgiving based on your maturity by confessing the mistake.

If, on the other hand, you are being falsely accused, don't be afraid to say so. Always be respectful, but assure the teacher that you — and only you — wrote the essay. Consider taking any and all research materials that you used to your teacher to prove your point. Again, be direct and honest; maybe more than any other time, this is not the time to brown-nose. This can be an intimidating prospect, but I'm sure that your teacher will appreciate your initiating the conversation.

If you're unclear about your teacher's expectations or what, exactly, his or her definition of plagiarism is, ask your teacher if the two of you can continue the conversation after school or during office hours. If nothing else, this will let your teacher know that you are serious about your studies and interested in the class — and that you want to go about getting your grades honestly.

A Texas professor failed more than half of his class after ChatGPT falsely claimed it wrote their papers

• A professor at Texas A&M University-Commerce tried to fail some students, Rolling Stone reported .
• He said he used ChatGPT to test whether they'd used the software to write the papers. 
• However, ChatGPT is not designed to detect material that it has previously composed itself.  

A professor at Texas A&M-Commerce failed more than half of his class after ChatGPT falsely claimed it wrote their papers, prompting the university to withhold their diplomas, Rolling Stone reported on Tuesday.

In an email sent to his class of seniors on Monday, Dr. Jared Mumm said that he had submitted three of their last essay assignments into OpenAI's bot Chat GPT to test whether any students used the software to write their papers.

"I copy and paste your responses in this account and Chat GTP will tell me if the program generated the content," Mumm, who teaches agricultural sciences and natural resources, wrote in the email, misspelling Chat GPT.

"I put everyone's last three assignments through two separate times and if they were both claimed by Chat GTP you received a 0," he added. 

As a result, most of the seniors — who had already graduated — had their official diplomas put on hold by the university, Rolling Stone reported. Mumm offered the class the chance to re-do the assignment to avoid a failing grade.

However, ChatGPT was not designed to identify content created by artificial intelligence — including its own. There are several other programs, including Winston AI and Content at Scale, that are able to do this.

The email was originally posted to Reddit by someone called DearKick.

In a follow-up post , DearKick wrote that several students wrote to Mumm to show him their timestamped Google Docs in an effort to prove that they did not use ChatGPT.

However, the professor "ignored the emails, instead only replying on their grading software in the remarks: 'I don't grade AI bullshit,'" DearKick wrote.

DearKick also said that one student had been exonerated and that Mumm had apologized to them. Two other students had admitted to using ChatGPT earlier in the semester, which "no doubt greatly complicates the situation for those who did not," they added. 

Texas A&M-Commerce told Insider in a statement: "University officials are investigating the incident and developing policies to address the use or misuse of AI technology in the classroom." 

"A&M-Commerce confirms that no students failed the class or were barred from graduating because of this issue. Dr. Jared Mumm, the class professor, is working individually with students regarding their last written assignments," they added.

The use of AI technology in education has become a contested issue. While some schools in Texas have banned students from using ChatGPT, others are trying to incorporate the AI chatbot.

Rita Pierson is the kind of teacher you wish you had. An educator for 40 years, she is funny, sharp and simply has a way with words — so much so that today’s talk feels a bit like a sermon.

“I have had classes so low, so academically deficient that I cried. I wondered, ‘How am I going to take this group in nine months from where they are to where they need to be?” says Pierson, in this amazing talk . “I came up with a bright idea … I gave them a saying: ‘I am somebody. I deserve the education that I get here’ … You say it long enough, it starts to be a part of you.”

I Wish My Teacher Knew

As a first-year teacher, Kyle Schwartz just didn't know where to begin. "I just really didn't know what I didn't know," she says.

So, she came up with a very simple idea: She offered her third-graders notecards and asked them to complete the sentence, "I wish my teacher knew... ."

"Instead of making assumptions about my students, I really just allowed them the space to tell me what I needed to know," says Schwartz.

The responses were varied, and Schwartz came away with a deeper understanding of her students, their thoughts, and their home lives. As it grew, students began to read aloud what they had written to their classmates, creating a powerful community-building experience. This, in turn, says Schwartz, led to valuable learning.

"I do believe that relationships are at the heart of every learning experience," she says.

In this edition of the Harvard EdCast, Schwartz, now in her fifth year of teaching and author of the book I Wish My Teacher Knew — a collection of students' answers — speaks about the exercise, its effect on learning, and why she decided to share it with the world.

[Matt Weber] Hello and welcome to the Harvard EdCast, a series of conversations with thought leaders in the field of education from across the country and around the world. I’m your host Matt Weber and today we’re here with third grade teacher from Denver and author of the book, I Wish My Teacher Knew, How One Question Can Change Everything For Our Kids , Kyle Schwartz. Welcome to the EdCast.

[Kyle Schwartz] Thank you so much for having me.

[Matt Weber] So Kyle, I think our listeners would be really interested in the, sort of, the premise for your book and also how this whole thing originated. You asked a very simple question of your students. And the question is, “I wish my teacher knew...” What compelled you to stop and ask them about what they wished they knew?

[Kyle Schwartz] Well, I started doing this very simple exercise in my class in my first year of teaching. And I just really didn’t know what I didn’t know. And, instead of making assumptions about my students, I really just allowed them the space to tell me what I needed to know. And it really was as simple that first year as passing out note cards and writing on the board “I wish my teacher knew blank” And then I collected them. But, over the years that I’ve done it, the kids really insisted on sharing them with the class. And so they, they were like, “Ms. Schwartz, I want to read mine out loud.” So, it really became a community-building exercise in my class where all of the kids kind of sat in a circle and they read out to their peers what they wished their teacher knew. And, it’s been a really powerful experience.

[Matt Weber] You know, at the heart of what you’re saying, the community-building component and the relationship-building component, it’s really that teachers listening to the students rather than just vice-versa. And, I’m curious, do you think that teachers today have a hard time hearing their students and why? I mean, just something to message out to all the other teachers across the country.

[Kyle Schwartz] Well, I think there are certainly like forces and pressures in education that would make us think that our time is best spent, umm, you know just, umm, collecting data and measuring everything. In that type of world, it really does take courage to value that which we can’t measure. Um, and, I do believe that relationships are at the heart of every learning experience. So, it’s about teachers really taking the time and making the space to hold sacred the time that it takes to make those human connections with students. I will say, I think most teachers are doing that work. Umm, but I would really like the education, you know, industry and the powers that be to really honor that relationship-building work, that community-building work that we’re doing every day in our classrooms.

[Matt Weber] Yeah, it’s something that’s sort of hard to quantify, yet it’s really at the core of so much of what makes education work and beautiful. Um, you used to, you do this exercise with elementary school students, Kyle. Um, do you see this is something that all ages can use? Teachers of different grades, as well?

[Kyle Schwartz] Well, I’ve heard from teachers, I mean, running the gambit, everything from kindergarten and students doing this all the way up to college students doing, “I wish my professor knew.” Um, so I really think that there’s no real age limit. I’m sure, of course, you’ll have to adapt it for your particular students. Um, but really what’s at the heart of it is just, you know, saying to students, “Hey, I want to know you better, and I want you, as the expert in your own learning, to let me know, you know, how I can be a better teacher to you. What information do I need?” So, really, at any age level this can take place.

[Matt Weber] Kyle, I think our listeners would be intrigued to know, like, that this was an activity that you did in your classroom, but then it had suddenly all sorts of national attention. Tell us about how this idea and this concept went viral for you?

[Kyle Schwartz] Well, like I said, I have been doing the lesson since my first year of teaching, and um, it’s always been a success for my classroom and I always really enjoy the experience with my students, but I didn’t really share the lesson, you know, not even with the teachers in the classroom next door. Um, you know, maybe I just thought it was, like, too simple to reach out and share to them. Um, but one day I found a crumpled orange piece of paper in my kitchen and as I unfolded it I noticed a child’s handwriting and that note said, “I wish my teacher knew I don’t have pencils at home to do my homework.” Um, and when I saw those words, you know, I kind of remembered that student, but I also saw something worth sharing and so I took a picture of it, I uploaded it to my new Twitter account, and I really just hoped that other teachers would ask the same question to their students and, much to my surprise, they did, and it ended up, you know, going viral and, you know, like TV cameras all of a sudden came to the school and there was a lot of attention on it, and it really amplified my students’ voices. And, while I was very surprised at the media attention, I do think it should, um, I think it should be noticed when, you know, kids are living with realities in their life, um, that are really difficult. You know, when kids are impacted by poverty, when they don’t have the resources that they need to learn. I do think that that’s a conversation worth having, and I’m really proud of my students for sparking it.

[Matt Weber] So you’ve been a teacher, is it now, for roughly five years?

[Kyle Schwartz] This is my fifth year, yes.

[Matt Weber] Well, you know, what is it that inspires you as a teacher? In so many ways others would probably say you, and your lesson, maybe now y our book inspired them as a teacher because it, you know, shows all the needs of the students and the sort of beauty of that relationship between teacher and student. But what would you say, now, going into your fifth year, inspires you as a teacher? Is it still the same things that inspired you when you were a first-year teacher?

[Kyle Schwartz] Well, I really got into education, um, after doing an AmeriCorps year through a program called City Year, where we worked on the public schools in D.C. And just noticing just how inequitable our school system was, was a real shock for me and it definitely angered me when I, um, first realized it. Really juxtaposing these schools in southeast D.C. to those suburban schools that I was able to go to. Um, and so I mean really the inequality in education, um, is definitely a motivator for me, because I see my students every day and they have so much potential and they’re so smart and, you know, oftentimes they’re met with a school system that’s not leveraging their potential, that’s not acknowledging their assets, and investing in them. So that’s certainly a motivator for me. But I also, um, have had really great mentors in my, in my career. Um, just, you know, the teacher across the hall who’s there every day and trying new things and, you know, trying new technology. That’s definitely a motivator for me. Um, as well as, um, I’m the product of a residency program, so I did a year of a teacher residency before I got my own classroom. And that teacher, Rachel Bernard, who I worked under, was a huge inspiration to me. And she really modeled for me that relationship-centered classroom. So I really get my inspiration every day, as hard as teaching is, um, you know, from the students and from my colleagues of teachers that I see working so hard.

[Matt Weber] Kyle, the question that you asked, you know, it’s-it’s a very simple, but a very profound question. Are there other, other lessons that you sort of have in your toolbox that you also bring out that are in that same vein as, as a question that you pose to the students that they are prompted to answer?

[Kyle Schwartz] Absolutely, and I talk about this in the book. It’s kind of broken up into chapters that really focus on an issue that could arise from these news, like grief or loss. Or, um, even, you know, even when a child is in danger. So one lesson I do with my classes, um, just who are your allies? Like, who can you go to if you need help? Who are the adults at school? Who are the adults at home that you can really trust, that you can confide in? And just having students, you know, identify those allies, I think it’s really powerful. But another thing I do for students, um, especially if they have experienced a grief situation, perhaps, you know, someone that they love has died, is to just say like, “How are you feeling about that?” or “Write it down.” Like, “I honor these feelings that you’re having. I know that it’s impacting your learning. Let’s take some time and let’s, let’s collect all your memories, and let’s write them down. And that’s something I do, in like, um, what I call the book, Memory Book. So I think that there’s a lot of really actionable steps that teachers, real life teachers like myself, can really do in their classrooms that are gonna respond to students’ needs and really impact their learning.

[Matt Weber] Kyle, last question, um, I’m assuming that you’ve probably participated in this activity yourself. And if you sort of flipped it, what would you write down if you have to answer the question, “What do you wish your students knew about you?”

[Kyle Schwartz] Well, I certainly have done that with my students. I think it’s kind of a prerequisite. If you’re going to ask students to share their life with you, you should really be willing to do the same. Um, but one thing my students are always surprised to hear is that their, you know, cuddly third-grade, elementary school teacher was once had major problems in school. I really struggled with behavior and connecting with my peers and forming relationships and making friends. I really had a prickly outer shell when I was a kid. So, I’m really honest with the kids about that. I had some things in my life that were really difficult to deal with. But I dealt with them in really difficult ways that made it hard for me to make friends and made it hard for me to succeed in school. And I think kids are always surprised to hear that because I think they idealize their teachers. But I think it’s a real model for growth for kids. And also it just gives me a lens for understanding students. Like, knowing every time I got sent down to the office, you know, the thing I needed wasn’t like, quote unquote, to be disciplined. The thing I needed was understanding and supports and resources. And so, I look for that in my students. Not just like, “How can I punish you for this behavior, but how can I get to the root it? What do you need from me? What are you looking for?” And that for me, it’s been really powerful in my teaching, but I think it’s also been powerful for my students to hear me being so honest about.

Hi everyone, Please help me fill in the following blank from the options. This question was asked in an online exam. I can't find a suitable answer from the options. My teacher said my essay needs............. by tomorrow. (correcting, to correct, corrected)  

"Correcting" is the least bad answer, but it really should be 'to be corrected'.  

What about " correction " ? It just sounds a bit more natural, in my opinion. "My teacher said my essay needs correction ."

Either "correcting" or "correction" will work: the other two options they've given you are both wrong.  

“needs corrected” is used colloquially by some people in the US. It’s not correct in standard English.

I mean here in the frozen wastes. And note "colloquially". When Englishpersons come up here and hear people say, for example, that "something needs done", they are often perplexed at first.  

I think it’s regional in the US too.

The reason for correcting being OK is, of course, that it’s a gerund – a participle acting as a noun, which means that it can replace the more formal correction . But in other cases, there may not be a suitable noun, so you have no choice but to use either a gerund or a passive construction, or another word meaning the same. For example: My bike needs mending/fixing​ My bike needs to be mended/fixed​ My bike needs repair/repairing​

My teacher used to scold and punish me daily, but I never lost my patience. His guidance and hard work paid off, and I can become an English teacher and a writer. I used to curse him earlier for being so strict with me, but now I am thankful to him because his strictness paid off.

We are taught small things in schools (manners) like, ‘do not tell lies’, ‘always say thankyou and please’, ‘ask for permission before entering a room or sitting on a chair’ etc. I thought they were small things but trusted me; these small things can make or break a situation (especially interviews).

A Teacher is a Guide, a Mentor

When I was in class 10 th , I was unsure which stream (science or commerce) I should pursue. The more I took opinions from others, the more I got confused. At last, I consulted my teacher, and he said,” listen to your heart, and you will get the answer”, and yes, I got the answer.

A Teacher is a Friend

I firmly believe that no matter how talented a person is, they can’t perform if they are emotionally not well. If one can consider their teacher a friend, trust me, your teacher will guide you through emotional turbulence.

Teacher- our Well Wisher

Some people will never betray you. One among them is your teacher. No matter what you think of him, they will always be your well-wisher.

I want to share one incident. When I was in school, there used to be one maths teacher who was very strict with us. He used to scold us, beat us, and give us punishment. In other words, he made our life hell. All students used to hate him. One day we lost our patience and decided to take revenge. We burnt his motorcycle. An FIR was registered. When one of my classmates was threatened, he took some names. When the police came to arrest those boys, our maths teacher withdrew his complaint.

No one of us expected this. We went to him and said sorry. We also asked him why he withdrew the police complaint. He said,” As students, you are bound to make errors, and as a teacher, I must correct them. But I can’t give you that punishment which will ruin your career and brand you as a criminal. This is why I withdrew my police complaint.” We all cried and said sorry again. This is what a real teacher is like.

When I was in class 8 th , my English was horrible. This is why I was not able to write answers correctly. One day my English teacher called me. She had my English literature copy in her hand. But thank God nothing like that happened. She politely asked about my problem, but I could not explain it because of fear. When I realised she wouldn’t scold me, I told her my problem. She then worked very hard on me, and only because of her hard work and my willpower improved my English. The point is, if she had scolded me or punished me, I am pretty sure things would not have worked out.

I try to do the same with my students. Sometimes, the situation becomes tricky. For example, once a girl student of mine asked me in class, “sir, mai AAP ko kaisi lagti hu”. I laughed and said, “You are a good kid”.
