How to pick and use an assignment notebook

You’re here because you want to know how to pick and use an assignment notebook. But I’m going to start by giving you the best assignment notebook tip ever: write it down.

Write down assignments. Write down due dates. Write down appointments. Write it all down.  You could have the BEST assignment notebook in the universe, and it will still be horrible if you don’t use it .

Why you need an assignment notebook

Our brains were made for way cooler things than storing boring information like what pages we’re supposed to read for homework and what day we are going to the dentist.

Our brains were made for thinking. And creating. And day dreaming, or whatever.

So when we try to use our brains to store “shallow” information like homework assignments, guess what we end up doing? Yup, having less brain energy to think and create.

How does that affect us in school? We will have difficulty paying attention, learning, remembering, studying, reading, etc. — all because we are using up our background brain energy (our mental bandwidth!) trying to subconsciously remember when the heck our project is due.

What’s the solution?

Write it all down. Everything. Every time.

Here’s where having an assignment notebook or student agenda comes into play. You need one. And you need one that works for you .

Just as we all think and learn differently, we are all going to have unique preferences for what this system looks like and how we use it. But no matter your unique tastes and preferences, the whole point of using an assignment notebook or agenda is to have a place to deposit the information that sucks up our brain power. We all need a place to write down what we can’t forget but don’t need to store.

Why you think you don’t need an assignment notebook

The biggest resistance I hear from students about keeping an assignment notebook is this: “I can remember everything myself.”

Ugh. Please. Just because we CAN do something doesn’t mean we SHOULD. And just because we CAN do something, doesn’t mean it’s GOOD for us.

Even if you CAN remember all your assignments and due dates and tasks and appointments, you must also remember this: trying to store this information in our heads uses up brain energy that we should be using for other things!

I recommend that every student use an assignment notebook that has at least two basic components. After that, the rest is up to you. All assignment notebooks should have at least:

• a monthly calendar view
• a daily calendar view with space

The monthly calendar view

This is an essential component to any proper task management / assignment notebook system. A calendar view allows us to see, at a glance, what we have going on for the month. This is where we write down and keep track of anything that is time-sensitive, like appointments, due dates, work hours, practices, games, etc. Basically anything that requires us to BE at a certain place at a certain time goes in this section. We can also use this monthly calendar to mark important dates such as birthdays.

A quick glance at your monthly calendar should essentially alert you to what you’ve got going on in the next week, as well as any due dates that are lurking around the corner.

The daily calendar view

This is the second essential component to any good assignment notebook or student agenda. In the daily view, we write down what we have to do on that particular day . This information isn’t usually time sensitive, other than it needs to get done that day. (Unlike a doctor’s appointment, at 3:00, which you would put on your monthly view.) Here, we write down homework assignments (all of them! Every time! Even if it’s small!), tasks and to-dos. This stuff can be school related, life-related, job related, or personal. It’s important that this section have enough space for you to feel comfortable writing in. If it’s too small, you will probably end up leaving some items off, and that’s very much not the point!

Optional assignment notebook components

Although this part isn’t totally necessary for everyone, I think that most people would benefit from a simple list-like section in the front of their notebook to write down things that pop up and need to be addressed, but that aren’t necessarily tasks or appointments.

This is where you could jot down ideas you have, random things you want to remember for a later time, and projects you want to get to at some point. This could also be where you do your brain dumps .

If you came to this post looking for assignment notebook recommendations, I’m hesitant to offer any because anything I link here will eventually become outdated (you should always have a dated assignment notebook). But if you need a reference point, this is a good one.

Assignment notebook extras

Apart from having an assignment notebook or calendar with a monthly and daily view, you can play with any other components you want. I have a ton of different lives (mom, teacher at one school, teacher at another school, business owner, graduate student, etc. times infinity!!) so I have a lot of other sections in my own personal task management system. But that’s all the fun stuff that you get to play around with and figure out over time.

My last assignment notebook tip is based on the same principle for everything I teach: keep it simple. Start with the basics and only add sections if you need to.

Best of all, you don’t need to install a separate add-in anymore. Class Notebook, Stickers, Forms, and many other features you rely on in the classroom are now deeply integrated into OneNote for Windows 11. The Class Notebook experience on Windows 11 is identical to OneNote Online, and more improvements are coming all the time.

Go to source is a very basic text-editing program that comes as an included application on Windows operating systems. Notepad is great for writing short documents that you want to save in plain text. Notepad has some additional features to take advantage of as well. However, Notepad is just a text editor, so images are not compatible. Because Notepad is basically the same on both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, the only difference is how you open the program. Learning the basics of Notepad is quick and easy!

• On Windows 8.1, type “Notepad" into the Start screen search box.

• Whenever you save a file with either Save or Save As, Windows will automatically save the file in .txt format, which will launch it in Notepad.
• You can choose to save Notepad documents in HTML by choosing Save As and selecting All Files from the list of choices, then saving the file with .htm or .html as its extension. Type your HTML code directly into your document as if you would plain text.
• In order to properly save a document in HTML, you will need to have Word Wrap enabled. You will find instructions on how to enable this feature a little later.

• &d Print the current date
• &t Print the current time
• &f Print the name of the document
• &p Print the page number
• Leaving the Header or Footer text box empty will result in no header footer on your printed document.
• You can insert words into the Header and Footer text box and they will print in their appropriate position. Letters after the "&" sign do not need to be capitalized.
• In Notepad, your header is centered, regardless of the formatting codes you use, if the formatting code is not the first item in the Header text box. For example, to align a title to the left side of the page, use &lTitle text.

• The rest of the menu, Cut, Copy, Paste, Delete, Find, Find Next, Replace, Go To, Select All, and Time/Date, are standard in nearly all Windows programs that deal with word documents.
• The “Go To” option is only available if Word Wrap is disabled and if your document contains numbered lines. Notepad defaults with Word Wrap turned off.

• A change in font affects the entire document. You cannot use one type of font on one part of the document and another type on another part.
• From the dropdown menu item listed as “Script” in the Font window, you can find characters that are not available in the standard “Western” style fonts.

• Note that the “Tab” key will move your cursor ten spaces across your text line, unlike Microsoft Word, which moves five spaces.

• If you would like to save your document in a different place, simply browse your preferred folder from the “Save As” window and select it. Notepad will switch to this choice for future documents.
• Remember that all of your files will be saved with the .txt extension.

• To change the paper size, tap or click a size in the Size list.
• To change the paper source, tap or click a tray name or a feeder in the Source list.
• To print the file vertically, click Portrait; to print the file horizontally, click Landscape.
• To change the margins, enter a width in any of the Margins boxes.

• You can hold down the Shift key with either of these combinations to scroll through windows in the opposite direction.

That can include full-color photographs, screenshots of charts and diagrams, adding hyperlinks to videos or embedding them, animations, scanned notes, or any other materials to help students grasp the concepts being taught.

How to create your own digital notebook.

When creating a digital notebook for your class, start by determining what you want it to look like and what purpose it’s going to serve.

1. You can add a syllabus and other course materials to your digital notebook, which can be updated throughout the year as classroom policies change.

2. Add homework assignments that students can complete directly from the digital notebook, such as interactive worksheets with fillable forms where students can add their answers.

3. You may have a section where you upload a piece of assigned reading for students to annotate collaboratively from their devices.

4. Students can do research online and add links, photos, and videos to a multimedia section.

5. Add blank sections between lessons for students to take notes.

How Adobe can help you create a stellar digital notebook.

As you gather materials to add to your digital interactive notebook, you may find you have physical documents you’d like to include. Using the Adobe Scan app you can quickly digitize paper documents and insert them into your notebook as a high-quality JPG or PDF.

Once you’ve prepared your pages, merge PDFs or JPGs to combine all these individual files into a single document for your digital notebook. After they’re merged, you can delete or rearrange individual pages until they’re in the order you want.

If you want to add fillable worksheets or blank pages where students can take notes, use the Prepare Form function in Acrobat to create pages with interactive text boxes. Acrobat will scan your document and automatically place text boxes in the appropriate places, but you can also add your own manually.

Depending on how long your digital notebook is, it may take up more space on your device than expected. Fortunately, you can learn how to make a PDF smaller using a tool to compress file size small enough to send as an email attachment without sacrificing any quality.

Whatever the subject, digital interactive notebooks are an engaging and cost-effective way to help students take an active role in the learning process.

Creating an Assignment with a Class Notebook Page

Take full advantage of Microsoft Teams by using both Class Notebook and the Assignments feature . Class Notebook is a great place to house your content and different work from your students. But, to track their work and grade it, you’ll want to use Class Notebook in conjunction with the Assignments feature.

If you aren’t tracking when students turn in their work or grading their work in the Class Notebook pages, you can just distribute the pages to students and review them manually. 

Create an Assignment with a Class Notebook Page

Create a Page to Assign

First, make sure you are logged into your Microsoft EDU account so that you have access to both the Class Notebook and Assignment pivot in Teams.

To be able to make an Assignment based on a Class Notebook page, we first need to have a Class Notebook page that we plan on assigning to our students.  

To do that, under the General Channel we can go to the Class Notebook pivot. If you have never used the Class Notebook before, it will prompt you to create your notebook. If you need help with this, check out this Step-by-Step guide .

I create the page I plan on assigning in the Teacher-Only Space. This way my students won’t see the page until it is assigned. Click the + Page at the bottom in the correct section and add in your content for the students to complete.

Tip: You can add PDFs to Class Notebook pages and set them as the background for students to easily write and add text on top of. To do this, you can insert a file into your page as a Printout. Then, you will need to use the Desktop application of OneNote and right-click on the PDF and click Set as Background. Now students will not be able to move the PDF around on the page.

Create an Assignment & Attach the page  

Now that the page is created, the next step is to create the Assignment.  

Head into the Assignments pivot , and Create a New Assignment. If you need a refresher on creating and grading assignments, check out How to Use Assignments in Microsoft Teams: Quick 12 Minute Tutorial for Teachers . 

Add in the title and description for the Assignment. The next step is to attach the Class Notebook page. Click Attach a Resource , and click the Class Notebook option from the list on the side. Then, navigate to where you have placed the assignment, and attach it.

Lastly, you must choose where you want to place this assignment in the individual student notebook space. Once it is attached, you now can see that students can edit their own copy of the page.

Fill out the remainder of the assignment details, and click assign at the top!  

Review & Grade the Assignment  

Once the students have completed their work and turned in the Assignment, you can review it and grade it. Just view this assignment in the  Assignment pivot like you would any other assignment. Then, add in your feedback and grade it.  

In addition, you can go through the Class Notebook and choose to R eview Student Work. You can go through each individual student notebook to review their work and give them feedback. In doing it this way, however, you won’t have the opportunity to give the assignment a grade. So it is recommended to review and grade from the assignment tab.

A Notepad and Calculator for University Students

COVID-19 compelled many to innovate. This paper presents a notepad and a calculator app to enable students to do their work on a mobile device and submit their assignments using the mobile device. This means that they did not need computers at all. It also means that they did not need to be in a specific location. This app can be used in all disciplines to submit assignments for Engineering, Physical Sciences, Computer Sciences, Social Sciences, and many other fields. It can also be used to take notes in a meeting. Basic text-based information can be written and submitted using Email or WhatsApp or Telegram or any other file transfer capability on the mobile device. There are several benefits that can be derived from this solution. These benefits include no need for a computer or pen or paper or even a calculator. Nowadays, students spend the most part of their life on their phones and tablets. They may also be able to use this app while they are in transit in a taxi or bus or train. Once an assignment has been completed, it can be sent immediately. On the other side, the lecturer can receive a soft copy of the assignment on his or her device. He can mark it online and file it for future reference. There is no need for network availability. In this paper, different examples are explored in detail. Procedures and processes are also presented concisely in order to equip the user with the necessary skills to operate the App easily.
