Gere was born in Philadelphia on August 31, 1949, [4] the eldest son and second child of homemaker Doris Ann ( née Tiffany; 1924 – 2016) and NMIC insurance agent Homer George Gere (1922–2023). [5] [6] His father originally intended to become a minister . [7] Gere was raised Methodist [8] [9] in Syracuse, New York . [10] His paternal great-grandfather, George Lane Gere (1848–1932), changed the spelling of his surname from "Geer". One of his ancestors, also named George, was an Englishman who came from Heavitree , England, and settled in the Connecticut Colony in 1638. [11] Both of Gere's parents were Mayflower descendants; his ancestors include Pilgrims such as John Billington , William Brewster , Francis Eaton , Francis Cooke , Degory Priest , George Soule and Richard Warren . [12]

In 1967, he graduated from North Syracuse Central High School , where he excelled at gymnastics and music and played the trumpet. [7] He attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst on a gymnastics scholarship, studying philosophy; after two years, he left and did not graduate. [7] [13]

Gere first worked professionally at the Seattle Repertory Theatre and the Provincetown Playhouse on Cape Cod in 1969, where he starred in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead . His first major acting role was in the original London stage version of Grease , in 1973. [7] He was one of the first notable Hollywood actors to play a homosexual character, starring as a gay Holocaust victim in the 1979 Broadway production of Bent , for which he earned a Theatre World Award .

Gere began appearing in Hollywood films in the mid-1970s. Originally cast in a starring role in The Lords of Flatbush (1974), he was replaced after fighting with his co-star Sylvester Stallone . He played a small but significant part in Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977) and starred in director Terrence Malick 's well-reviewed drama Days of Heaven (1978). [7] The crime drama American Gigolo (1980) significantly boosted his profile and the romantic drama An Officer and a Gentleman (1982) (co-starring Debra Winger ) cemented Gere's ascent to stardom, grossing almost $130 million [14] and winning two Academy Awards out of six nominations; [15] Gere himself received his first Golden Globe Award nomination. [16] For the remainder of the 1980s, Gere appeared in films of varying critical and commercial reception. [17] [18] His career rebounded with the releases of Internal Affairs (1990) and Pretty Woman (1990), the latter of which earned him his second Golden Globe Award nomination. [19] The 1990s saw Gere star in successful films including Sommersby (1993) (opposite Jodie Foster ), Primal Fear (1996) and Runaway Bride (1999) (which reunited him with his Pretty Woman co-star Julia Roberts ). [17] He also took a leading role in the action thriller The Jackal (1997), playing former IRA militant Declan Mulqueen; Gere affected an Irish accent for the role. [20]

Gere was named People magazine's " Sexiest Man Alive " in 1999. Not long thereafter, all in the same year, he appeared in the hit films The Mothman Prophecies (2002), Unfaithful (2002) and the Academy Award -winning musical film adaptation Chicago (2002), [7] for which he won his first Golden Globe Award . Gere's ballroom dancing drama Shall We Dance? (2004) was also a solid performer that grossed $170 million worldwide. [21] His next film, the book-to-screen adaptation Bee Season (2005), was a commercial failure. [22] Gere went on to co-star with Jesse Eisenberg and Terrence Howard in The Hunting Party (2007), a thriller in which he played a journalist in Bosnia . He next appeared with Christian Bale , Heath Ledger and Cate Blanchett in Todd Haynes ' semi-biographical film about Bob Dylan , I'm Not There (2007); Gere was one of six actors to portray a variation of Dylan. He co-starred with Diane Lane in the romantic drama Nights in Rodanthe (2008). The film was widely panned by critics [23] (making #74 on The Times Worst Films of 2008 list), [24] but grossed over $84 million worldwide. [25] The film is his most recent to have been produced entirely by a major film studio .

Gere has expressed a belief that his politics regarding China, an important financial resource for major Hollywood studios, have made him unwelcome within Hollywood . [26] He embraced his apparent exile from Hollywood and instead appeared in independent films that garnered some of the best reviews of his career. [18] He was notably singled out for portraying businessman Robert Miller in Arbitrage (2012), earning his fourth Golden Globe Award nomination. Among many positive reviews, [27] Peter Travers of Rolling Stone cited Gere's performance as "too good to ignore" and "an implosive tour de force". [28] Also in 2012, he received the Golden Starfish Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Hamptons International Film Festival and the Career Achievement Award from the Hollywood Film Awards . [29] [30] He had earlier received an award from the 34th Cairo International Film Festival in December 2010. [31]

Gere made a notable departure from his traditional screen persona with Joseph Cedar 's political drama Norman (2016). The film saw him portray Norman Oppenheimer, a small-time Jewish fixer . Gere himself described the character as an embodiment of the "sides of us we know are annoying and needy". [32] His portrayal of Oppenheimer was called "consistently, completely fascinating" by RogerEbert.com [33] and was singled out as a worthy Academy Award contender by Variety . [34]

Gere is an accomplished musician, composing and performing the Pretty Woman piano theme and a guitar solo in Runaway Bride . He learned tap dance for his role as lawyer Billy Flynn in Chicago , [35] and karate for An Officer and a Gentleman . [36]

Multiple film critics and media outlets have cited Gere as one of the best actors never to have received an Academy Award nomination. [37] [38]

Gere regularly visits Dharamshala , the headquarters of the Tibetan government-in-exile . [39] He is an advocate for human rights in Tibet and is a co-founder of the Tibet House US , creator of the Gere Foundation, and Chairman of the Board of Directors for the International Campaign for Tibet . Because he supports the Tibetan Independence Movement , he is permanently banned from entering China . [40] [41]

In 1993, Gere was banned from being an Academy Award presenter after he denounced the Chinese government while announcing the nominees. [42] [43]

In September 2007, Gere called for the boycott of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games to put pressure on China to make Tibet independent. [44] [45] He starred in a Free Tibet-themed Lancia commercial featuring the Lancia Delta . [46] On June 27, 2011, he meditated in Borobudur Temple [47] in Indonesia . He actively supports Survival International , an organization dedicated to protecting the rights and lands of tribal peoples throughout the world. [48]

Gere campaigns for ecological causes and AIDS awareness. He currently serves on the board of directors for Healing the Divide, an organization that supports global initiatives to promote peace, justice and understanding. [49] He helped to establish the AIDS Care Home, a residential facility in India for women and children with AIDS, and also supports campaigns for AIDS awareness and education in that country. In 1999, he created the Gere Foundation India Trust to support a variety of humanitarian programs in India. [50]

On April 15, 2007, Gere appeared at an AIDS awareness rally in Jaipur . During a live news conference to promote condom use among truck drivers, he embraced Bollywood superstar Shilpa Shetty , dipped her, and kissed her several times on the cheek. As a result of that gesture, a local court ordered the arrest of Gere and Shetty, finding them in violation of public obscenity laws. Gere has said the controversy was "manufactured by a small hard-line political party". About a month later, a two-judge bench headed by the Chief Justice of India, K. G. Balakrishnan , described the case as "frivolous" and believed that such complaints against celebrities were filed for "cheap publicity" and have brought a bad name to the country. They ruled that Gere would remain free to enter the country. [51]

Gere contributed some of his writing for the book We Are One: A Celebration of Tribal Peoples , released in October 2009. [52] He discussed the persecution and loss of land of the Jummas as an example of a tragic story that repeats itself in different continents of the world, calling attention to the crime against their peaceful culture and how it reflects on humankind's own relationship with nature and capacity to survive. [53] The royalties from the book's sale go to the indigenous rights organization Survival International .

In 2010, Gere stated that the war in Iraq was not supported by the American people and that the Bush administration had "bullied" Americans into the decision. [54] He called George W. Bush a "very poor president". [55] In a press conference held on the sidelines of the 34th Cairo International Film Festival , he said, "I'm very sorry about what the U.S. has done in Iraq. This war has been a tragedy for everyone. I hope that the people of Iraq can rebuild their country." [56]

In 2016, Gere endorsed Hillary Clinton for president and donated $2,700 to her campaign . [57]

In 2017, Gere criticized Benjamin Netanyahu 's policies on the Palestinians and Israel 's expansion of settlements in the occupied West Bank , stating, "Settlements are such an absurd provocation and, certainly in the international sense, completely illegal—and they are certainly not part of the program of someone who wants a genuine peace process." [58]

In February 2023, Gere was one of the 480 global figures who signed a statement from Freedom House expressing support for Mahsa Amini protesters , urging sanctions on Iranian officials, and calling for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to be proscribed as a terror group. [59]

Gere had on-again/off-again relationships with actress Penelope Milford from 1971 to 1978, [60] and painter Sylvia Martins from 1978 to 1986. [61] During those years, he was also sporadically linked with Tuesday Weld , [62] Carole Mallory , [63] Dawn Steel , [64] Loree Rodkin , [65] Barbara Carrera , [66] and Barbra Streisand . [67] It was suggested that he had affairs with Priscilla Presley and Kim Basinger in tell-all books written by Presley's ex-boyfriend Michael Edwards [68] and Basinger's ex-husband Ron Snyder. [69] He has also reportedly dated models Laura Bailey , [70] Tina Chow , [71] Dalila Di Lazzaro , [72] and Padma Lakshmi . [73] He was married to model Cindy Crawford from 1991 to 1995.

In November 2002, Gere married model and actress Carey Lowell . [74] They have a son, Homer James Jigme Gere, who was born in February 2000 and is named for his grandfathers as well as the Tibetan name "Jigme". [7] [75] In September 2013, the two separated after 11 years of marriage. They spent three years in highly contested divorce proceedings in New York County Supreme Court . [76] The case was settled in October 2016. [77] In early April 2018, Gere married Spanish activist Alejandra Silva . [78] In August 2018, they announced that they were expecting their first child. [79] [80] Their son, Alexander, was born in February 2019. [81] [82] In April 2020, the birth of their second son was reported. [83] [84]

Gere's interest in Buddhism began when he was in his 20s. [85] He first studied Zen Buddhism [85] under Kyozan Joshu Sasaki . After studying Zen for five or six years, [85] he and Brazilian painter Sylvia Martins traveled in 1978 to Nepal , where he met many Tibetan monks and lamas. [48] He then met the 14th Dalai Lama in India [85] and became a practicing Tibetan Buddhist (specifically of the Gelugpa school) [85] and an active supporter of the Dalai Lama. [7]

In February 2023, Gere was diagnosed and hospitalized with pneumonia during a family vacation in Nuevo Vallarta in Mexico . It was reported by his wife that he had fully recovered from his illness. [86]

Gere has often been included on lists of famous vegetarians; however, there is no clear evidence either way. [87] [88] [89] [90]

In 1995, Gere was the President of the Jury at the 19th Moscow International Film Festival . [92]

On May 17, 2012, Albanian President , Bamir Topi awarded the "Medal of Gratitude" to Gere with the citation: "With gratitude and honor outstanding personality of the world art, great humanist and activist for the protection of human rights, which unmasked and the American public made known, and further, inhuman crimes, ethnic cleansing in Kosovo , in 1999 , the Serbian military machine against the Albanian civilian population living in its land." [93] On February 16, 2012, the George Eastman Museum honored Gere with the George Eastman Award for distinguished contribution to the art of film. [94]

Richard Gere’s Iconic Roles Explored

The cinematic journey of richard gere.

The tale of Richard Gere’s ascent in Hollywood reads like a script from one of his blockbuster films – a tale of passion, intrigue, and the relentless pursuit of acting excellence. His journey began far from the glitzy lights of Tinseltown, in the humble city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Gere’s early life and career beginnings were no cakewalk. Like a true method actor, he delved into a smorgasbord of roles, refining his craft with Broadway stints and a sprinkling of film appearances, laying down the gauntlet for his future in Hollywood.

Bearing both the chisel of classic good looks and a steely determination, Richard Gere became the darling of the silver screen in the 80s. From the raw, unadulterated allure of Days of Heaven to the high-flying thrills of An Officer and a Gentleman , Gere’s diversity and depth made him a force with which to be reckoned. In every character, he breathed life, entrenched in complexities and nuances – a foundation for the iconic roles that were yet to come.

Breaking Out of the Mold with “American Gigolo”

In 1980, Richard Gere set the silver screen ablaze as Julian Kaye in American Gigolo . It was the role that unraveled the seams of Hollywood’s leading men stereotype, injecting a lethal dose of depth into what it means to be desirable. Gere’s Julian wasn’t just a convoy of sex appeal; he was vulnerability incarnate, a man stitched together with the silk threads of sensitivity and woes. This role took Gere’s career from simmering potential to full-boil stardom.

Indeed, showcasing Gere as the haute couture-clad escort navigating the complex weaves of Los Angeles’ indiscretions and legal drama, American Gigolo was not just a film. It was a cultural totem, an oeuvre that redefined the Hollywood leading man. While Gere’s on-screen wardrobe became synonymous with the “ all things worn ” link by the ultra-chic, it was the gutsy performance, blending raw sensuality with piercing vulnerability that shattered the mold.

Richard Gere’s Cultivation of Charm in “Pretty Woman”

Flying down from the heavens of romantic cinema, Gere’s portrayal of Edward Lewis in Pretty Woman landed with the elegance of a perfectly constructed parachute dress in the world of edgy fashion mag narratives. Gere sported the sort of disarmingly handsome, suave sophistication that wouldn’t feel out of place in a Vivienne Westwood gala. Yet, it was his embodiment of charm that turned the stone-set expectations of romantic heroes into confetti.

Imagine this: Gere and Julia Roberts entanglement of fiery chemistry. Their on-screen magic in Pretty Woman was as palpable as the tension in a crowded massage parlor , capturing audiences’ hearts across the globe. Scenes such as the lavish shopping spree or the operatic emotional crescendo highlighted the dynamic between the two, becoming an immortalized emblem of romantic synergy.

Tackling Legal Drama in “Primal Fear”

Courtroom dramas need actors who can swagger through legalese as if it were colloquial banter at a ritzy cocktail party. Cue Richard Gere in Primal Fear . His turn as Martin Vail, the lawyer who swims in a shark tank of moral ambiguities, was a performance that made even the most skeptical critics sit up. Gere leveraged his charm offensive not just to dazzle the jury but also the audience.

Against the backdrop of legal jargon and dark courthouse corridors, Gere’s performance was a beacon, shining brighter still when contrasted with the explosive Edward Norton. This was a heavyweight bout of acting prowess, and Gere, with his nuanced portrayal of a defense attorney and his complex dynamics with his client, left an indelible mark on the genre of the legal thriller.

The Understated Power of Performance in “Chicago”

Who knew Richard Gere could sing and dance? In a brassy and brilliantly razzle-dazzle-ridden Chicago, Gere tap-danced and crooned his way into our consciousness as the silver-tongued lawyer Billy Flynn. This role was as much of a sartorial statement, resonating with an edginess that Vivienne Westwood would wink at, as it was a symphony of Gere’s versatility.

“Chicago” was jazz, sex appeal, and scandal wrapped in a fishnet stocking – and Gere was its heartbeat. Critics roared and audiences swooned; Gere’s performance was a linchpin in the film’s six Academy Award wins. Here was a film soaked in the mischievous unpredictability of a Tim Burton plot twist, with Gere’s show-stopping number, “All I Care About Is Love,” establishing his multifaceted talent.

Richard Gere Triple Feature (An Officer and a Gentleman Primal Fear Runaway Bride)

Richard Gere Triple Feature (An Officer and a Gentleman Primal Fear Runaway Bride)

Embark on a cinematic journey through the diverse roles of one of Hollywood’s most charming actors with the Richard Gere Triple Feature. This exclusive collection showcases Gere’s remarkable range, from drama and romance to suspenseful thrillers. “An Officer and a Gentleman,” the perennial 1982 classic, delivers a powerful blend of romance and personal growth, with Gere starring as Zach Mayo, a young Navy recruit with a troubled past who finds love and purpose under the stern tutelage of a drill sergeant. The film is celebrated for its inspiring storyline, iconic performances, and its unforgettable ending which has cemented it as a staple of American cinema.

Plunge into the heart of legal drama with “Primal Fear,” where Richard Gere’s portrayal of Martin Vail, a high-powered defense attorney, brings to the fore his character’s intellectual prowess and moral complexities. Released in 1996, the film follows Vail as he defends an altar boy accused of murder, only to uncover a web of corruption and deceit that threatens to upend his understanding of truth and justice. Gere’s dynamic interaction with co-star Edward Norton makes for a suspenseful psychological thriller that keeps you guessing until the very last moment. The layered plot and compelling performances earned “Primal Fear” critical acclaim and a loyal audience following.

Completing the set is the delightful romantic comedy “Runaway Bride,” which pairs Richard Gere with Julia Roberts for an unforgettable on-screen duo. Gere charms as Ike Graham, a cynical newspaper columnist who decides to write an article on Maggie Carpenter, a woman who has left a string of fiances at the altar. The film, which hit theaters in 1999, captures the essence of a modern fairy tale, filled with humor, love, and the enchanting chemistry between its two leads. Its heartfelt story and feel-good moments have made “Runaway Bride” an enduring favourite among rom-com fans.

The Internal Struggle Personified in “Unfaithful”

Moving on to a film that channeled the stark chiaroscuro of human emotions, Unfaithful presented Gere as a man haunted by the specter of betrayal. Gere, portraying a husband in the throes of his wife’s affair, handed in a tour de force of controlled devastation. His face was an unmapped road of emotions, each turn revealing a landscape marred by pain and sorrow.

Directorial finesse used shadow and light to amplify Gere’s angst-ridden performance, painting a portrait of a man fractured by the seismic tremors of heartbreak. Unfaithful strummed on broader societal guitars, plucking out themes of fidelity, the fragility of love, and the volcanic eruptions of jealousy.

Richard Gere Movies: The Transformative Years

Venturing into the twilight of his career was not about dimming lights for Richard Gere but rather about the gentle glow of sunset offering a different ambiance to explore. In movies like Arbitrage and Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer , he chose roles as sinewy and complex as a Shakespearean monologue, diverging from the archetypal leading man to characters with a tenuous grip on morality and success.

In these films, Gere continued to showcase an arresting dynamism, proving that his craft is like fine whiskey – only getting better with age. His portrayal of power-hungry magnates and fixers was devoid of vanity and permeated with a vulnerability that suggested a chess game with high stakes playing out beneath the veneer of control.

Activism and Legacy: More Than Just an Actor

But let’s not confine Richard Gere to the silver screen’s celluloid. Off-camera, Gere is a symphony conductor of humanitarian efforts, orchestrating movements for human rights and political activism with the same intensity he brings to his roles. This passion perhaps is the lens through which he chooses his roles – moving pictures that reflect something deeper than an actor’s whimsy.

His engagement with issues from Tibet to AIDS research suggests an interweaving of life and art that mirrors the deepest folds of method acting. In his activism, there exists a stirring narrative, a subplot that enriches his performances and speaks of a legacy beyond the applause of Hollywood.

The Little Prince

The Little Prince

The Little Prince is an enchanting novella that transcends the boundaries of age, inviting readers into a world of imagination and profound introspection. Penned by the illustrious French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, this literary masterpiece is both a children’s fable and a parable for adults, illustrating the importance of human connections and the innocence of childhood. Through its pages, we follow the journey of a young prince from a distant asteroid as he ventures across the universe, encountering a variety of extraordinary characters. Each of these encounters, depicted in beautiful, watercolor illustrations, imparts a timeless lesson about life, love, and the essence of human nature.

The story begins with a stranded aviator in the Sahara Desert, who meets the mysterious Little Prince, instantly forming a bond that frames the narrative. As the Little Prince recounts his travel from planet to planet, he shares his observations about the grown-up world, often poking fun at the absurdity of adult behaviors. The narrative is simple yet deep, with discussions about the significance of a single rose or the purpose of a repetitive task carried out by a peculiar inhabitant, serving as allegories that resonate with readers of all ages. Saint-Exupéry’s eloquent writing style and philosophical musings elevate the novella to a literary classic that continues to inspire and teach long after the last page is turned.

Both whimsical and poignant, The Little Prince endures as a meditation on the complexities of love and loss, friendship and loneliness. The story’s universal themes are artfully woven together with its author’s own experiences as an aviator and adventurer, which add authenticity to the tale. Each character, from the wise fox to the self-important king, embodies a unique facet of human experience, challenging the reader to reflect on their own life and the people in it. The book’s compact length belies a depth of emotion, making it the perfect keepsake to treasure and share with others, solidifying its legacy as a beloved fixture in international literature.

The Timeless Resonance of Richard Gere’s Filmography

In being hospitalized with pneumonia earlier this year, Gere was reminded of his mortality, something that perhaps gave him an even greater appreciation for his recovery, as reported by his wife, Alejandra Silva. As his journey continues, we’re left pondering the enduring resonance of Richard Gere’s repertoire. His cinematic contribution is like a well-thumbed script in the library of Hollywood history—forever influential, with pages that actors of every generation have bookmarked for inspiration.

Looking to the horizon, what roles await a man whose career has flirted with every genre, every emotion, every facet of humanity? One can only speculate, but odds are, they’ll be roles brimming with the unpredictability we’ve come to relish—stories that grip us, that challenge us, that entertain us.

As we await the divulging of future projects, like anticipating the newest twists in “ Outlander Season 6 ” or being introduced to the “ Cast Of Fire country ,” Richard Gere’s oeuvre stands tall, reminding us of a man who brought more than just good looks to the screen—a man who raised the bar for what it means to be an icon in the world of film.

Richard Gere’s Legendary Performances: A Walk Down Memory Lane

So, let’s dive into some fun trivia and jaw-dropping facts about this Hollywood heartthrob’s most iconic roles – you never know, you might just find out something that tickles your fancy!

The King of Chic—Edward Lewis in “Pretty Woman”

Whoa, talk about striking gold! Playing the dashing and suave businessman Edward Lewis in “Pretty Woman” is probably what catapulted Gere into the league of eternal charmers. But did you know he wasn’t the first pick for the role? Yep, it’s true! The part could have gone to another leading man, but fate had other plans and Gere’s on-screen chemistry with Julia Roberts turned this into the fairytale blockbuster of the ’90s. It’s like finding out that Shiloh Jolie Pitt has a secret twin – unexpected but totally intriguing!

The Dancer with a Secret—John Clark in “Shall We Dance?”

Man, oh man, did Richard Gere tap into his inner Fred Astaire or what? As John Clark in “Shall We Dance?”, he twirls his way right into your heart. This role showed us a more vulnerable side of Gere as he played a dude stuck in the monotony of life, secretly swingin’ to the beats of ballroom dancing. Who knew lawyers in mid-life crises could be so endearing? You can bet your bottom dollar that seeing Richard Gere bust a move gave everyone a bit of that “I wanna dance with somebody” feeling.

The Officer and the Gentleman—Zack Mayo in “An Officer and a Gentleman”

Hold onto your hats! Here comes Gere as Zack Mayo, a rough-around-the-edges Navy cadet in “An Officer and a Gentleman”. This part didn’t just rake in the green—it showed there was more to Gere than just perfect hair and a killer smile. His portrayal of Mayo, a guy with a chip on his shoulder who’s trying to straighten up and fly right, is nothing short of stellar. And let’s be honest, the iconic scene where he sweeps Debra Winger off her feet? Swoon city!

The Corrupt Cop—Dennis Peck in “Internal Affairs”

Now let’s switch gears to one of Gere’s darker roles. As the corrupted cop Dennis Peck in “Internal Affairs,” Gere flipped the script and brought on the bad boy vibes. This ain’t your typical cat-and-mouse game; it’s Gere like you’ve never seen him before—slick, manipulative, and downright chilling. It’s the kind of juicy role that any actor would kill for, and Gere knocked it out of the park. Just goes to show, even good guys can play wicked convincingly.

Alright, you film connoisseurs, that’s a wrap on our Richard Gere trivia fest! Whether he’s got you hot under the collar as a romantic lead or giving you chills as a baddie, it’s clear that Gere’s got that special something. So next time you’re flipping through channels or streaming your favorite flick, keep an eye out for this Hollywood mainstay. Who knows, you might just see him in a whole new light!

What does Richard Gere’s son do?

Well, what’s the scoop on Richard Gere’s son? Homer James Jigme Gere, cool name, eh? Anyway, he’s a bit of a private lad—likes to keep it low-key—so he’s not exactly hogging the spotlight. But word on the street is he’s inherited some of his dad’s charm and is doing his own thing. No acting gigs yet, but who knows? The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree!

How old is Richard Gere’s new wife?

Alright, so Richard Gere’s new wife, Alejandra Silva, is a spring chicken compared to our silver-haired actor. She’s in her late 30s, which, let’s face it, in Hollywood years is practically just out of the crib! She’s living proof that love knows no age—these two seem to be smitten kittens.

Talk about not being afraid to dive back into the love pool! Richard Gere has tied the knot three times. Yep, thrice! Dude’s not just a hopeless romantic on screen; seems like he’s been searching for that storybook ending off-screen, too.

How many biological children does Richard Gere have?

When it comes to kiddos, Richard Gere has two biological children. First, there’s his son with Carey Lowell, Homer, and then there’s the littlest addition to the Gere clan, Alexander, with his current wife, Alejandra Silva. Looks like parenting round two is another role he’s embracing full tilt!

How many children does Richard Gere have with his new wife?

Ah, Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere—now that was a fairytale of the ’90s that fizzled, huh? These two were the ‘it’ couple but eventually called it quits. The constant limelight can be tough on any relationship, and, alas, they went their separate ways. Guess the ’till death do us part’ bit wasn’t in the cards.

How old was Richard Gere when he had a baby?

Richard Gere wasn’t exactly a spring chicken when he welcomed his latest child— he was a whopping 69 years old! Talk about an age-defying dad move! Goes to show, there’s no age limit on adding a little more love to your life.

Are Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford still married?

And last, but not least, are Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford still married? Nope, that ship sailed a long time ago. They untied the knot back in the ’90s and have since sailed off to new horizons. Goes to show, not all Hollywood romances are built to last—even the ones that look picture-perfect.

Richard Gere Through the Years: From ‘American Gigolo’ to ‘Pretty Woman’ and Beyond

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

A rom-com icon! Richard Gere ’s career skyrocketed in the '80s with his breakout role in American Gigolo and he has since become a critically acclaimed actor over five decades. The actor was born in 1949 in Philadelphia, but was raised mainly in Syracuse, New York. After dropping out of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Gere went on to land his first major acting role in the original London stage version of Grease in 1973. After transitioning to film in the mid-70s, the Unfaithful actor had his breakout role in 1980’s American Gigolo. Two years later, he starred in An Officer and A Gentleman, which went on to win two Academy Awards. “Like a lot of things, it was timing,” Gere told Interview magazine in 2012 when asked why he thought An Officer and A Gentleman had so much success. “[My 1979 film] Yanks was a very good picture in the realm of An Officer and a Gentleman. But the timing was wrong; the studio didn’t believe in it – it was dumped by the studio. Paramount happened to believe in An Officer and A Gentleman and pushed it. Word of mouth was good. People enjoy seeing a people movie.” In 1990, Gere really established himself as a leading man thanks to the rom-com Pretty Woman with Julia Roberts . The two later reunited in the 1999 romantic comedy Runaway Bride. “[I still talk to Julia Roberts] all the time. I spoke to her three or four times a day,” Gere explained to Entertainment Tonight in April 2017. “I would call her right now.” Throughout the years, Gere has had many high-profile relationships, including his marriage to Cindy Crawford from 1991 to 1995. Years later, the model called her marriage to the actor a “great chapter” in her life, explaining that their big age gap caused issues in their relationship. “I think a lot of what happened with Richard and I was that I was still 22 and at 22 – as a young woman – I was kind of still figuring out who I was and what I wanted to be and he was already 37,” she said in a 2013 interview. “So in some ways, he knew that I was still growing and changing. I just didn’t want to hear it from him because at 22 you think you know everything. You think you’re already formed. And then you realize, 10 years later, that they were totally right.” After his romance with Crawford, Gere was married to actress Carey Lowell from 2002 to 2016. The pair welcomed son Homer in February 2000. Aside from Crawford and Lowell, Gere was also linked to Barbra Streisand, Priscilla Presley and Susan Sarandon. The Pretty Woman actor married Alejandra Silva in 2018 after two years of dating. The couple – who have a 34-year age gap between them – welcomed their son, Alexander, in February 2019 followed by their second son in April 2020. Gere is also stepdad to Silva’s son Albert whom she shares with ex-husband Govind Friedland. “I have found the quiet and happy life that I have always sought,” Gere told Hola! magazine in 2018 about his romance with Silva.Sign up for Us Weekly's free, daily newsletter and never miss breaking news or exclusive stories about your favorite celebrities, TV shows and more! The Untold Truth Of Richard Gere

Richard Gere in a Peaky Blinders cap

When Tom Cruise earned worldwide recognition in 1986 as the Navy bad boy Maverick in " Top Gun ," the character wasn't a million years removed from the role Richard Gere played four years earlier in "An Officer and a Gentleman." Like Maverick, fellow Navy brat Mayo also wanted to fly jets. He was also a renegade who had a hard time with authority, carried himself with a certain arrogance, and had a habit of writing checks his body couldn't cash. Yet Mayo has a depth, a complexity, and a characterization that leaves Maverick looking like a one-dimensional fly-boy. In part that's due to the script and the themes of "An Officer and a Gentleman," but Gere's nuanced and brooding acting style also plays a major contribution.

Gere's role in "An Officer and a Gentleman" was career-defining and the key which unlocked the heart of a watching world. Yet it was by no means a fluke. The man from Philly has played a lot of parts in his 40-year-plus career, but he never goes into a role half-hearted, has a simmering intensity that's always engaging. As he told The Guardian , "Acting is a fraud – but if you don't fill it with the truth then it has no power." From "Breathless" and "The Cotton Club" to "Chicago" and "Time Out of Mind," Gere has packed a powerful punch . In his later years, he has been quite selective about the work he takes and admitted, "They don't send me stuff now unless the script is good because I don't want them to waste my time." You've seen the movies, read the PR, and now it's time to reveal the untold truth of Richard Gere.

Richard Gere has fans in the remote jungles of Borneo

You know you're a big noise in the world of film when you can't walk down a city sidewalk without being mobbed by hordes of fans and a stray opportunistic paparazzi looking for that exclusive pic. Yet being a household name in, for want of a better term, the civilized world, is a garden variety kind of fame when compared to being a pin-up in the remote corners of the globe untouched by modern life. Take Richard Gere for example, he's not just big in Japan — he also has fans who also inhabit the jungles of Borneo. During an interview on The Graham Norton Show , Gere explained how he once visited the island in the Malay Archipelago of Southeast Asia and chartered a missionary pilot to take him from Samarinda into the heart of the jungle.

In a small aircraft with no other passenger apart from his Brazilian girlfriend, the pilot performed the extremely tricky maneuver of landing on a tiny strip of land alongside a river. Gere and his girlfriend departed the plane and the pilot took off. With the help of tribespeople, they took a canoe upriver and came to a longhouse. Communicating solely by hand gestures the tribesmen ushered Gere and his girlfriend toward the building. At that point, Gere revealed the whole tribe came out, and in unison began excitedly chanting, "Officer, gentleman, officer, gentleman!"

He's a committed Buddhist

Richard Gere explained in an interview with Lion's Roar that during his early twenties he felt unhappy, unfulfilled, and was constantly asking questions about the nature of existence. In his quest for meaning, he scoured late-night bookshops and read prolifically hoping to find something that helped him make sense of the universe. He eventually stumbled upon some books on Tibetan Buddhism by Walter Evans-Wentz and it ignited a life-long adherence to the Buddhist faith. Gere explained, "They had all the romance of a good novel," but added that the book's real strength was the revelation that living in the world and being detached from it were not mutually exclusive. Soon after Gere began studying in the Zen tradition under Sasaki Roshi.

Six years after becoming a Zen student, Gere met the Dalai Lama in India, who asked the actor if he was really angry and sad when he was playing a part. Gere admits he gave "some kind of actor answer" to which the Dali began to laugh hysterically at the very thought that Gere "would believe emotions are real." Gere explained that it was a life-transforming event meeting "His Holiness' and has since called him "my root guru." When asked if he brings a Buddhist approach to filmmaking, Gere explained that because in essence, film fragments time and space for a new "reality," he believes the process helps with "loosening the mind." He added that although, "we're the magicians doing the trick, even we get caught up thinking that it is all real."

He wasn't invited to the Academy Awards for two decades after making anti-China comments

When Richard Gere stepped onto the stage to announce the Oscar for Best Art Direction at the 1993 Academy Awards, everyone was expecting the standard teleprompter speech. What they got was something else . Gere used the spotlight to highlight "what a horrendous human rights situation there is in China, not only towards their own people but to Tibet as well." Gere then urged the audience to collectively, "send love and a kind of sanity to Deng Xiaoping right now in Beijing, that he will take his troops and take the Chinese away from Tibet and allow people to live as free independent people again." After Gere made his controversial stand in front of an audience of billions he wasn't invited back to the Oscars until two decades later.

Although the Academy Awards press office told GQ that they didn't ban Gere because they have no such policy, the actor told the Huffington Post , "If you stay around long enough, they forget they've banned you." Gere was reunited with other members of the "Chicago" cast for a musical performance at the 2013 Academy Awards. Although "Chicago" swept the board with six Oscars ten years earlier, and four actors from the film were nominated, Gere's name was not amongst them. The Daily Express reports that during an interview with The View, Gere, who plays Billy Flynn in the movie, explained that it was a bit of a sore point that his name never got called out alongside Catherine Zeta-Jones, Queen Latifah, Renee Zellweger, and John C. Reilly. "Wow, what happened? I have to admit that got to me," he revealed.

Richard Gere blames China for his lack of Hollywood job offers

The perceived slight from the Academy Awards was just the tip of a rather ugly iceberg. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter , Gere reveals he believes that fateful night in 1993 has harmed his acting career and led to a lack of job offers. As someone who has enjoyed a long-term relationship with the Dalai Lama and is a committed Buddhist, Gere continued to be vocal in his support for Tibet. As well as rallying people to boycott the 2008 Beijing Olympics, The Gere Foundation actively strives for the "cultural preservation of Tibet" and is firmly against the "continuing brutal occupation of the Chinese."

Gere believes that the strengthening of ties between the movie business and the authoritarian country, which is now the second-biggest market for films in the world, has hampered his opportunities. The former in-demand leading man explained, "There are definitely movies that I can't be in because the Chinese will say, 'Not with him!' I recently had an episode where someone said they could not finance a film with me because it would upset the Chinese." Yet the major studio's losses are the independent's gains. Since much of Hollywood turned its back on him, Gere's star has continued to shine in a series of low-key films that have earned him rave reviews. And as the man himself points out, "I'm not interested in playing the wizened Jedi in your tentpole."

He apologized to India for publicly kissing Shilpa Shetty

Richard Gere has always had something of a reputation as a ladies' man, but the former Hollywood heartthrob was once in the surreal position of having to apologize for kissing a lady in public. According to the Associated Press , the silver fox quite literally swept Indian actress Shilpa Shetty off her feet with a kiss and embrace that mimicked his move from the film "Shall We Dance." Gere gave the Bollywood star the unsuspecting kiss at an AIDS awareness event in New Delhi. On the surface, it appeared quite inconspicuous but hard-line Hindu groups took umbrage at the public display of affection which is taboo in much of India. In the city of Jaipur, a judge accused Gere and Shetty of breaking obscenity laws, and arrest warrants were issued.

On The Daily Show With Jon Stewart , Gere defended the kiss and blamed the "moral police in India" for causing such a furor. Gere, who spends a lot of time in India, was confident the matter would be resolved without jail time or a fine, and legal experts agreed with him. India's former attorney general Soli Sorabjee called the matter ridiculous and although a "bit vulgar, it does not amount to obscenity." Shetty was summoned before the court on a charge of not resisting a "highly sexually erotic" hiss. Feeling responsible, Gere issued a statement apologizing for any offense caused and stressed that his focus was as HIV/AIDS advocate. He appealed to the media to let the circus end and stressed Shetty was blameless in the incident.

Richard Gere owns a Westchester inn

If ever you're on the outskirts of New York, feeling a bit peckish and in need of spending some quality time in an eighteenth-century country inn that has been lovingly restored by its owner, then why not check out Richard Gere's Bedford Post Inn? New York Magazine reports that Gere opened the Inn with his former wife Carey Lowell, and although she once enthused her other half could boil "a wonderful egg," Gere explained, "I want this to be a place where the minds of people who could change the world would meet."

Gere stumbled upon the idea of buying the rotting historical landmark after riding past it on a horse trail and having a vision of rescuing it. The deal went down in 2007 and the local community embraced Gere and his Inn. "Everyone is welcome, but it's really for locals. There were really no good restaurants in the area." Since his separation from Lowell, the Inn now belongs to Gere and his business partner Russell Hernandez. As well as indulging in more "terrestrial delights" you can also feed the mind and enjoy a yoga course or two after booking in.

Richard Gere had a big falling out with Sylvester Stallone over Princess Diana

Sylvester Stallone and Richard Gere have something of a history. During the filming of "The Lords of Flatbush" things got a little heated when Gere began to play a little rough with Stallone during an improvised fight scene. In a question and answer session with Ain't It Cool , Stallone said, "He would strut around in his oversized motorcycle jacket like he was the baddest knight at the round table." Things escalated when the grease and mustard from half a chicken Gere was munching on dripped all over Sly's pants. Sensing difficulties between the two actors, the director gave Gere his marching orders and the part of Chico went to Perry King. The feud, apparently, would rage on.

According to Elton John, the fierce rivalry between the two leading men came to a head at a dinner party where they both vied for the attention of Princess Diana. The Daily Express reports that in his 2019 book "Me," John describes the natural chemistry between Gere and the Princess which appeared to anger fellow guest Stallone who was reportedly staring daggers at the couple. The "Rocket Man" hitmaker wrote that he believes Stallone might have turned up just to hit on Diana only to find Gere had thrown a spanner in the works. He later alleges he had to break up a near fistfight between the two actors, with Sly snarling, "I never would have come if I'd known Prince f***in Charming was gonna be here."

His middle name is Tiffany and he was voted 2015's sexiest man over 60

During his career, Richard Gere has attracted a lot of female attention. The final scene in "An Officer and a Gentleman," the smoldering gaze he uses to maximum effect in "Pretty Women," and the naked scene in "American Gigolo" have all conspired to give an extra little boost to the Gere effect. Yet even after nearly four decades in the biz, the famously grey-haired actor with the unusual middle name of Tiffany was still turning heads and winning votes as the sexiest man over 60. The 100,000-plus global network of females over 60 who make up Sixty and Me , voted the 65-year-old Gere their sexiest man of vintage in 2015.

It's not as ego-boosting as the sexiest man alive award he picked up in 1999 , but it's still a strong honor to receive at any age. Gere was given the title because he has "a persona that appeals to women of all ages – intelligent, independent, playful, self-confident and sensual." Gere was described as "drop-dead gorgeous" and completely oblivious to the effect he has on the fairer sex. He was also given the label of being "beautifully humble while exuding charisma." In a nod to his Buddhist leanings they also called him sensuous but with an otherworldly detachment." If you could bottle that special something which Gere possesses in bucketfuls, then perhaps Pierce Brosnan, Liam Neeson, Harrison Ford, and Jeff Bridges would be interesting in buying some. They all were runners-up to Gere in the sexy over-60 stakes. Never mind boys! It's not the winning, but taking part which counts.

Richard Gere can trace his ancestors back to the Mayflower

Following 66 long days at sea, the Mayflower finally landed on the shores of the new world on November 21, 1620. Amongst the 102 settlers who had crossed the Atlantic from Plymouth, England looking for a better life, were the ancestors of man who would over three centuries later have the sort of job that would be beyond their comprehension. Still pictures were not a thing back then, let alone ones that moved. Nevertheless, Gere is one of 35 million people in the world who can trace their lineage to the Mayflower Pilgrims. According to Mayflower 400 , Gere is a descendant of William Brewster, as are Bing Crosby and Katharine Hepburn. Gere's descendants also include Lincolnshire couple John and Eleanor Billington.

During festivities in Yorkshire to mark 400 years since the Mayflower set sail, it was hoped by various dignitaries that Gere would be a guest of honor. The Yorkshire Post reports that Bassetlaw MP John Mann said that Tory Dame Caroline Spelman, who was invited to take part in the anniversary celebrations would "be very welcome to re-tread the streets of Scrooby. If she does, she might care to bring one of the many descendants of the Pilgrims with her, if she with her good contacts could arrange it. The most popular would probably be Mr. Richard Gere." Speaking in the House of Commons, Dame Caroline sighed, "Mr. Speaker, if only." Interestingly, Clint Eastwood, Christopher Reeve, and Hugh Hefner all share a common Mayflower ancestor as well. His name is William Bradford.

He's a versatile musician who can tap dance

Before he dropped out of university to pursue a career on the stage, Richard Gere always had one foot on it as a versatile musician. Gere played four different instruments in high school and wrote the scores for amateur productions. Gere explained to Interview that he used to play in a host of rock bands with names like The Strangers, and The Outsiders, and he took turns singing, playing guitar, tinkling the ivories, and once in a blue moon, bashing the drums. He said it wasn't a conscious decision to pursue acting but more of a direction that found him.

In the later years, Gere has been found playing the cello , and blowing the trumpet, which he perfected for his role in "The Cotton Club." Gere called the process magical and explained, "Through the process of practicing four hours a day you start focusing on emotion and when you pick up the trumpet it's filled with feeling." During the filming of "Chicago," Gere also added another string to his bow when he learned how to tap-dance from scratch. In an interview with The Early Show , Gere explained trying to become anywhere near plausible in the art of tap in a few months was both daunting and humbling. "I was very shy about it when I was learning it. And I'd be in a separate room and lock the doors. And no one was allowed to come in there, just me and my teacher," he said.

He has taken a lot of roles that John Travolta turned down

Five years before John Travolta made the character of Danny Zuko in the rock n' roll musical "Grease" familiar to millions of teenagers worldwide, the role was being played by another young and upcoming actor called Richard Gere. Coventry Live reports that the stage production of "Grease" was the 23-year-old Gere's big break. As an understudy in America, Gere jumped at the chance to play the lead in a tour of the UK's West End. In 1978 Travolta followed in Gere's footsteps and immortalized the role in the film version.

As if to make amends for not playing Zuko on the big screen, Gere would go on to develop a habit of picking up a lot of roles that Travolta had turned down, or couldn't commit to, and turn them into a success. On Kevin Hart's show, Hart to Hart , Travolta explained that was offered first dibs of playing Bill in "Days of Heaven" but had to take a raincheck. Travolta said, "It was such a significant role, that Richard Gere ended up doing, which ended up a theme, where he did many roles I didn't do."
