In fact, television brings vision and sound together from a distance which is beyond the range of human sight and hearing. It is a powerful and very useful invention of modern science. Television Essay in English: 350 Words
Television is a modern invention. When television was first invented, people of the world were very happy because they had the scope to know the world around them and to entertain themselves in the best possible ways. Television is no doubt something which ushered progress of civilization. Some electronic media like BBC took over the most important role to make the people of the world aware of the society to which they were belonging and the environment by which they were being nourished. It is quite well known that, BBC produced all of the plays of Shakespeare as films. Even this world famous electronic media focused on the two World Wars so much so that people of the world came to know how horrible was war and warfare. Thus social consciousness was an important factor that was first aroused by the aid of television.
But this television is now being abused constantly by some commercially debased people. In West Bengal, television is so abused that the young generation is now misguided. The young people follow the bad culture and become oblivious of the hoary tradition of our country. Mere entertainment has been presented on the different television channels. Meaningless serials and reality shows are heart-throbbing without any moral impact. Crimes and social disorder are presented so crudely that the minds of the young people are overwhelmed with frustration, dilapidation, and despair. It seems that there is no escape from despair. The ultimate result is social alienation which brings about moral dilemma.
Yet, the concerned authority is really callous to the problems. Advertisement, sponsors, etc. are the sources of the economic structure of the different channels. Thus, the producers intend to draw the attention of the businessman by claiming the popularity of the channels. The inevitable result of this kind of commercial debasement is of Course disintegration that causes serious disbelief in the sphere of culture and education. Therefore, we must be conscious of the fact that television is not merely a media for entertainment; rather it is a source of important social and cultural messages.

Therefore, the TV is a dual edged sword. Since its a useful entity an we can’t ignore it entirely. For that, we need to use it with maximum care, and discipline for gaining an added value and benefits for our life.

Essay on Television in 150 words
Television, originally known as the “idiot box,” has come a long way since its inception. Invented by John Logie Baird, it was initially designed solely for entertainment. Over the decades, technology has transformed it into a multifaceted medium. The word “television” itself reflects its essence, with “tele” meaning far-off and “vision” pertaining to seeing. It has become a device with a screen that receives signals, offering a wide array of channels and programmes.
Television is no longer confined to being a source of amusement; it’s a vital tool for education and information dissemination. News channels keep us informed about global events, and educational programmes expand our knowledge horizons. It’s also a source of inspiration, with motivational speakers and skill-building programmes motivating viewers.
However, television isn’t without its drawbacks. Inappropriate content, addiction, and the spread of misinformation are concerns. Yet, its advantages, including affordability and accessibility, outweigh the disadvantages when used responsibly.
Essay on Television in 200 words
Television, an electronic marvel, has evolved dramatically from its early days. Initially dubbed the “idiot box,” it was primarily a source of entertainment. However, with technological advancements, it has transformed into a versatile medium. The word “television” combines “tele,” meaning far-off, and “vision,” the act of seeing, reflecting its purpose as a device for receiving distant signals.
Television is now an indispensable part of modern life. It offers a multitude of channels and programs catering to diverse interests. News channels keep us updated on current events, while educational programs expand our knowledge in various fields. It’s also a source of motivation, with programs featuring inspirational speakers and skill development.
The affordability of televisions makes them accessible to a wide range of people. They provide a cost-effective means of entertainment and education, making them a valuable asset in many households.
Despite these advantages, television is not without its drawbacks. Inappropriate content can be easily accessed, posing risks to younger viewers. Excessive television watching can lead to addiction, resulting in reduced physical activity and social interactions. Furthermore, some programs spread misinformation, which can have lasting negative effects.
In conclusion, television, with its evolution and widespread use, offers a blend of entertainment, education, and information. Its benefits are immense, but users must exercise responsibility to maximize its potential while minimizing its drawbacks.

A Guide to Using Quotations in Essays
Quotations Add Credibility to a Persuasive Essay
- Love Quotes
- Great Lines from Movies and Television
- Quotations For Holidays
- Best Sellers
- Classic Literature
- Plays & Drama
- Shakespeare
- Short Stories
- Children's Books
- M.B.A, Human Resource Development and Management, Narsee Monjee Institution of Management Studies
- B.S., University of Mumbai, Commerce, Accounting, and Finance
If you want to make an impact on your reader, you can draw on the potency of quotations. The effective use of quotations augments the power of your arguments and makes your essays more interesting.
But there is a need for caution! Are you convinced that the quotation you have chosen is helping your essay and not hurting it? Here are some factors to consider to ensure that you are doing the right thing.
What Is This Quotation Doing in This Essay?
Let us begin at the beginning. You have a chosen a quotation for your essay. But, why that specific quotation?
A good quotation should do one or more of the following:
- Make an opening impact on the reader
- Build credibility for your essay
- Make the essay more interesting
- Close the essay with a point to ponder upon
If the quotation does not meet a few of these objectives, then it is of little value. Merely stuffing a quotation into your essay can do more harm than good.
Your Essay Is Your Mouthpiece
Should the quotation speak for the essay or should the essay speak for the quotation? Quotations should add impact to the essay and not steal the show. If your quotation has more punch than your essay, then something is seriously wrong. Your essay should be able to stand on its own legs; the quotation should merely make this stand stronger.
How Many Quotations Should You Use in Your Essay?
Using too many quotations is like having several people shouting on your behalf. This will drown out your voice. Refrain from overcrowding your essay with words of wisdom from famous people. You own the essay, so make sure that you are heard.
Don't Make It Look Like You Plagiarized
There are some rules and standards when using quotations in an essay. The most important one is that you should not give the impression of being the author of the quotation. That would amount to plagiarism . Here are a set of rules to clearly distinguish your writing from the quotation:
- You may describe the quotation in your own words before using it. In this case, you should use a colon (:) to indicate the beginning of the quotation. Then begin the quotation with a quotation mark ("). After you have completed the quotation, close it with a quotation mark ("). Here is an example: Sir Winston Churchill made a witty remark on the attitude of a pessimist: "A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty."
- The sentence in which the quotation is embedded might not explicitly describe the quotation, but merely introduce it. In such a case, do away with the colon. Simply use the quotation marks . Here is an example: Sir Winston Churchill once said, "A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty."
- As far as possible, you should mention the author and the source of the quotation. For instance: In Shakespeare âs play "As You Like It," Touchstone says to Audrey in the Forest of Arden, "The fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool." (Act V, Scene I).
- Ensure that the source of your quotation is authentic. Also, verify the author of your quotation. You can do so by looking up the quotation on authoritative websites. For formal writing, do not rely on just one website.
Blend Quotations In
An essay can seem quite jarring if the quotation does not blend in. The quotation should naturally fit into your essay. No one is interested in reading quotation-stuffed essays.
Here are some good tips on blending in your quotations:
- You can begin your essay with a quotation that sets off the basic idea of the essay. This can have a lasting impact on your reader. In the introductory paragraph of your essay, you can comment on the quotation if you like. In any case, do ensure that the relevance of the quotation is communicated well.
- Your choice of phrases and adjectives can significantly boost the impact of the quotation in your essay. Do not use monotonous phrases like: "George Washington once said...." If your essay is written for the appropriate context, consider using emphatic expressions like: "George Washington rocked the nation by saying...."
Using Long Quotations
It is usually better to have short and crisp quotations in your essay. Generally, long quotations must be used sparingly as they tend to weigh down the reader. However, there are times when your essay has more impact with a longer quotation.
If you have decided to use a long quotation, consider paraphrasing , as it usually works better. But, there is a downside to paraphrasing too. Instead of paraphrasing, if you use a direct quotation , you will avoid misrepresentation. The decision to use a long quotation is not trivial. It is your judgment call.
If you are convinced that a particular long quotation is more effective, be sure to format and punctuate it correctly. Long quotations should be set off as block quotations . The format of block quotations should follow the guidelines that you might have been provided. If there are no specific guidelines, you can follow the usual standardâif a quotation is more than three lines long, you set it off as a block quote. Blocking implies indenting it about half an inch on the left.
Usually, a brief introduction to a long quotation is warranted. In other cases, you might need to provide a complete analysis of the quotation. In this case, it is best to begin with the quotation and follow it with the analysis, rather than the other way around.
Using Cute Quotes or Poetry
Some students choose a cute quotation first and then try to plug it into their essay. As a consequence, such quotations usually drag the reader away from the essay.
Quoting a verse from a poem, however, can add a lot of charm to your essay. I have come across writing that acquires a romantic edge merely by including a poetic quotation. If you are quoting from poetry, keep in mind that a small extract of a poem, say about two lines long, requires the use of slash marks (/) to indicate line breaks. Here is an example:
Charles Lamb has aptly described a child as "A child's a plaything for an hour;/ Its pretty tricks we try / For that or for a longer space; / Then tire, and lay it by." (1-4)
If you use a single line extract of a poem, punctuate it like any other short quotation without the slashes. Quotation marks are required at the beginning and at the end of the extract. However, if your quotation is more than three lines of poetry, I would suggest that you treat it like you would have treated a long quotation from prose. In this case, you should use the block quote format.
Does Your Reader Understand the Quotation?
Perhaps the most important question you must ask yourself when using a quotation is: "Do readers understand the quotation and its relevance to my essay ?"
If the reader is re-reading a quotation, just to understand it, then you are in trouble. So when you choose a quotation for your essay, ask yourself the following questions:
- Is this too convoluted for my reader?
- Does this match the tastes of my audience ?
- Is the grammar and vocabulary in this quotation understandable?

I Made a Show About Talking to White Nationalists. Then I Talked to My Audience
F or promotional purposes, I am often asked to sum up Just For Us . Sometimes, I get very technical and say itâs a comedy-theater hybrid, or a solo show about assimilation or something high-minded, but what usually happens is that the interviewer stares at me until I give them what they want. Which is this:
Just For Us , if you must know, is a show about a guy who attends a meeting of White Nationalists in Queens. The thing that makes this hooky, presumably, is the fact that that guy (me, Iâm the guy) was raised as an Orthodox Jew.
Eventually, Iâm found out. The resultant story, as crafted for the stage with a few related comedic tangents, wound its way through the Anglophone live comedy world over the past six years, making some fun stopsâ Broadway , Montreal, Australiaâbefore it airs on HBO April 6.
And the thing I like most about my corner of the pixelated comedy landscape, my own stall now set out at the farmers market of online streaming, is the tens of thousands of people who have come to see it live; stopped and visited and left their fingerprints on my countertop. In the cometâs tail behind the show there have been innumerable conversations afterwards in the lobby, bar, or the middle of the sidewalk outside the venue. Anyone with the patience and wherewithal to ask a question, has.
Not all the conversations have been good or illuminating. There are a lot of watery compliments, or Jewish geography (over the five years I attended a Jewish summer camp , I seem to have overlapped with literally everyoneâs cousin). A nice man in Detroit complained that I donât offer any answers, only more questions. Fair. The queries aimed at me mostly revolve around the White Nationalists in the room that night back in 2018. Am I still in touch? I am not. Would I do it again? Yes. Have any of them seen the show? No idea. I thought I saw one of them in Union Square in 2022, but going up to a stranger to ask, âHey, do I know you from a meeting of White Nationalists?â struck me as a bad move.
Because of the nature of live performance, and the way we tell stories, some of those conversations, besides being a more explicit window into what people respond to, have found their way into the show itselfâwhich is wild. The show is different from the show it was six months ago, a year ago, six years ago. I didn't even present as Jewish in the original draft of it. To offer work that is a living thing, responsive to the world around it, is a unique experience. Itâs a bit like if you were watching a movie and DiCaprio got to look directly into camera and say, âPeople get really sad here, when we hit the iceberg .â Live theater! Itâs the best.
And in the post-show conversations that light me up the most, I find my tribe: people animated by curiosity or a unique approach to discourse. Theyâre interested in the craft of telling a story, or they talk about a time where they connected with someone very different from them, or offer an anecdote about wandering into a room where they did not belong. After a show in Wales, out of nowhere, a woman in her seventies told me she liked âthat I knew enough to listenâ in that room. When I told her that the opinions at this meeting of White Nationalists were pretty offensive, regressive, etc., she said to me, genuinely baffled, âWhat does that have to do with listening?â

I now see that extant desire to listen and be heard, to be seen and understood, in so much. I catch glimpses of it in our newspapers, in courtroom testimonies, on Love is Blind .
I read once that there is nothing more romantic than being seen, and the average American is, in my opinion, looking for romance. Iâm not naive enough to think that we can head for a kumbaya moment that sees MAGA conservatives locked in tear-soaked embrace with Joy Behar , but Iâm encouraged by that desire for understandingâespecially from those who are different from us. I think it accounts for a huge amount of the resonance that Just For Us has had.
A few weeks ago, after a show in Atlanta, someone asked me, framed through their anger at anotherâs position on the current conflict in Gaza , âWhat should be the limits of our empathy?â I told them that I donât know, but I think the more you can extend, the more of the opposing perspective you can come to grips with, the higher your chances are of reaching something productive. Itâs an answer I donât know that I wouldâve given six years ago. Iâm resistant to âwhat Iâve learnedâ stuff from comedians and solo show artistsâitâs very patâbut I can say whatâs changed for me. Which is that Iâve found much more productivity when I can remove my self-righteousness from my arguments. Iâve found a surprising appetite for grace in the average person. And, Iâve found so much more comfort in asking questions than offering answers. Sorry, guy from Detroit.

Fallout , a new Prime Video series based on the popular video game franchise of the same name, is set in a post-apocalyptic America more than 200 years in the future.
Following nuclear war where the âhavesâ remain safe in fallout bunkers called Vaults and âhave-notsâ are left to fend for themselves against mutants in the Wasteland, the series centers around the intersection of three different characters fighting for their survival.
The series is executive produced by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy ( Westworld ), and co-created by showrunners Geneva Robertson-Dworet ( Captain Marvel ) and Graham Wagner ( Portlandia ).
Aaron Moten ( Mozart in the Jungle ) plays Maximus, a squire of the Brotherhood of Steel. In the Fallout universe, the Brotherhood is described as a paramilitary order that is tasked with protecting and regulating advanced technology.
Aaron spoke with Amazon ahead of the series release on April 10.
Check out our extended Q&A below:
What can you tell us about the characters in Fallout ?
â Fallout is this entirely different imagined past that then becomes this imagined future. The three main characters come from different aspects of the Wasteland: We have a vault dweller, who has lived her entire life in the vault; we have our cool character who has spent over 200 years walking the Wasteland; and we have Maximus, who I play, and is an initiate of the Brotherhood of Steel.â
How does the series compare to the games?
â Howard Cummings [production designer] has done an incredible job of pulling directly from the games. These worlds already do exist in three-dimensional form and the entire team, along with Jonathan Nolan and our showrunners, have made the series a live-action version of what already exists in the games.â
You play the character Maximus. Can you tell us more about him?
âMaximus in an interesting character, one I was jumping at the opportunity for a chance to play. He is a very concerned person with how he is viewed in this world. Heâs concerned about finding his place in it, and I donât think he really knows what that is. The wonderful thing about this show is that we get a nice starting place for all of these characters and understand them more and more as we go along and watch them make choices.â
Thereâs a lot of great talent attached to this series, both in front and behind the camera. What was it like working with them to bring this adaptation to Prime Video?
âAmazing! Amazing to feel that you can trust your collaborators. Thatâs part of the power that Amazon brought to this project. It felt great to be guided by Jonathan Nolan, day in and day out. Itâs a freeing experience to trust your collaborators because you feel that you do have a safety net of some kind. You can take risks and try things and be able to get something beautifully put together by the end of it.â
What do you want to tell fans of the video games about why they should watch the series?
â Fallout , as a video game, has a tone to it that is drastically different than any other video game. Itâs what the fans of Fallout really hold dear to themselves. Itâs a game that stretches the drama, comedy, and outrageousness into this swirling mixing pot. In order to nail a tone like that, the conversation was always âwhat is possible in a moment?â with a script.
Is there anything you can tell us about the series that no one knows yet?
âIâm really most excited for people to enjoy this show because you donât know where itâs going. Theyâre going to keep us guessing as an audience as we watch this and itâs going to be thrilling because of that.â
Prime Video will release all eight episodes of Fallout on April 10 at 6 p.m. Pacific Time. Watch the official trailer and learn more about how MGM studios brought the Fallout world to life .

When the largest earthquake in Taiwan in half a century struck off its east coast, the buildings in the closest city, Hualien, swayed and rocked. As more than 300 aftershocks rocked the island over the next 24 hours to Thursday morning, the buildings shook again and again.
But for the most part, they stood.
Even the two buildings that suffered the most damage remained largely intact, allowing residents to climb to safety out the windows of upper stories. One of them, the rounded, red brick Uranus Building, which leaned precariously after its first floors collapsed, was mostly drawing curious onlookers.
The building is a reminder of how much Taiwan has prepared for disasters like the magnitude-7.4 earthquake that jolted the island on Wednesday. Perhaps because of improvements in building codes, greater public awareness and highly trained search-and-rescue operations â and, likely, a dose of good luck â the casualty figures were relatively low. By Thursday, 10 people had died and more than 1,000 others were injured. Several dozen were missing.
âSimilar level earthquakes in other societies have killed far more people,â said Daniel Aldrich , a director of the Global Resilience Institute at Northeastern University. Of Taiwan, he added: âAnd most of these deaths, it seems, have come from rock slides and boulders, rather than building collapses.â
Across the island, rail traffic had resumed by Thursday, including trains to Hualien. Workers who had been stuck in a rock quarry were lifted out by helicopter. Roads were slowly being repaired. Hundreds of people were stranded at a hotel near a national park because of a blocked road, but they were visited by rescuers and medics.
On Thursday in Hualien city, the area around the Uranus Building was sealed off, while construction workers tried to prevent the leaning structure from toppling completely. First they placed three-legged concrete blocks that resembled giant Lego pieces in front of the building, and then they piled dirt and rocks on top of those blocks with excavators.
âWe came to see for ourselves how serious it was, why it has tilted,â said Chang Mei-chu, 66, a retiree who rode a scooter with her husband Lai Yung-chi, 72, to the building on Thursday. Mr. Lai said he was a retired builder who used to install power and water pipes in buildings, and so he knew about building standards. The coupleâs apartment, near Hualienâs train station, had not been badly damaged, he said.
âI wasnât worried about our building, because I know they paid attention to earthquake resistance when building it. I watched them pour the cement to make sure,â Mr. Lai said. âThere have been improvements. After each earthquake, they raise the standards some more.â
It was possible to walk for city blocks without seeing clear signs of the powerful earthquake. Many buildings remained intact, some of them old and weather-worn; others modern, multistory concrete-and-glass structures. Shops were open, selling coffee, ice cream and betel nuts. Next to the Uranus Building, a popular night market with food stalls offering fried seafood, dumplings and sweets was up and running by Thursday evening.
Earthquakes are unavoidable in Taiwan, which sits on multiple active faults. Decades of work learning from other disasters, implementing strict building codes and increasing public awareness have gone into helping its people weather frequent strong quakes.
Not far from the Uranus Building, for example, officials had inspected a building with cracked pillars and concluded that it was dangerous to stay in. Residents were given 15 minutes to dash inside and retrieve as many belongings as they could. Some ran out with computers, while others threw bags of clothes out of windows onto the street, which was also still littered with broken glass and cement fragments from the quake.
One of its residents, Chen Ching-ming, a preacher at a church next door, said he thought the building might be torn down. He was able to salvage a TV and some bedding, which now sat on the sidewalk, and was preparing to go back in for more. âIâll lose a lot of valuable things â a fridge, a microwave, a washing machine,â he said. âAll gone.â
Requirements for earthquake resistance have been built into Taiwanâs building codes since 1974. In the decades since, the writers of Taiwanâs building code also applied lessons learned from other major earthquakes around the world, including in Mexico and Los Angeles, to strengthen Taiwanâs code.
After more than 2,400 people were killed and at least 10,000 others injured during the Chi-Chi quake of 1999, thousands of buildings built before the quake were reviewed and reinforced. After another strong quake in 2018 in Hualien, the government ordered a new round of building inspections. Since then, multiple updates to the building code have been released.
âWe have retrofitted more than 10,000 school buildings in the last 20 years,â said Chung-Che Chou, the director general of the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering in Taipei.
The government had also helped reinforce private apartment buildings over the past six years by adding new steel braces and increasing column and beam sizes, Dr. Chou said. Not far from the buildings that partially collapsed in Hualien, some of the older buildings that had been retrofitted in this way survived Wednesdayâs quake, he said.
The result of all this is that even Taiwanâs tallest skyscrapers can withstand regular seismic jolts. The capital cityâs most iconic building, Taipei 101, once the tallest building in the world, was engineered to stand through typhoon winds and frequent quakes. Still, some experts say that more needs to be done to either strengthen or demolish structures that donât meet standards, and such calls have grown louder in the wake of the latest earthquake.
Taiwan has another major reason to protect its infrastructure: It is home to the majority of production for the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, the worldâs largest maker of advanced computer chips. The supply chain for electronics from smartphones to cars to fighter jets rests on the output of TSMCâs factories, which make these chips in facilities that cost billions of dollars to build.
The 1999 quake also prompted TSMC to take extra steps to insulate its factories from earthquake damage. The company made major structural adjustments and adopted new technologies like early warning systems. When another large quake struck the southern city of Kaohsiung in February 2016, TSMCâs two nearby factories survived without structural damage.
Taiwan has made strides in its response to disasters, experts say. In the first 24 hours after the quake, rescuers freed hundreds of people who were trapped in cars in between rockfalls on the highway and stranded on mountain ledges in rock quarries.
âAfter years of hard work on capacity building, the overall performance of the island has improved significantly,â said Bruce Wong, an emergency management consultant in Hong Kong. Taiwanâs rescue teams have come to specialize in complex efforts, he said, and it has also been able to tap the skills of trained volunteers.
Taiwanâs resilience also stems from a strong civil society that is involved in public preparedness for disasters.
Ou Chi-hu, a member of a group of Taiwanese military veterans, was helping distribute water and other supplies at a school that was serving as a shelter for displaced residents in Hualien. He said that people had learned from the 1999 earthquake how to be more prepared.
âThey know to shelter in a corner of the room or somewhere else safer,â he said. Many residents also keep a bag of essentials next to their beds, and own fire extinguishers, he added.
Around him, a dozen or so other charities and groups were offering residents food, money, counseling and childcare. The Tzu Chi Foundation, a large Taiwanese Buddhist charity, provided tents for families to use inside the school hall so they could have more privacy. Huang Yu-chi, a disaster relief manager with the foundation, said nonprofits had learned from earlier disasters.
âNow weâre more systematic and have a better idea of disaster prevention,â Mr. Huang said.
