I Used LinkedIn to Build My Resume – and Here’s What Happened

by Laura Smith-Proulx | executive resume writing

executive resume LinkedIn

Did you know you can use LinkedIn to build a resume?

LinkedIn Resume

Just view your Profile, click under More, select Save to PDF, and your resume will magically appear!

As part of Microsoft’s AI initiatives, this is a clever way to create a resume with little effort.

Here are the advantages and disadvantages of using LinkedIn to build your resume:

Your LinkedIn Profile probably lacks the data needed for a truly outstanding resume.

Most LinkedIn Profiles do NOT contain interesting success stories , Skills, or other details that would otherwise attract recruiters.

On top of that, some LinkedIn users are wary of putting confidential data about their employers online, because revenue, client names, or losses, or stories about problems at the company should be disclosed with care.

executive resume LinkedIn

This means you must spend the time to gather the right achievements for a powerful personal brand message on your resume… and adjust confidential details as needed for public reading on LinkedIn.

Your LinkedIn-generated Resume will use fairly attractive formatting… but in the end, your resume will look just like everyone else’s document.

If you’re a novice in using Microsoft Word or other tools, you’ll be grateful to see your resume information populated very quickly by LinkedIn.

Chief Revenue & Sales Officer Resume

However, your resume is a business presentation and  the format of your resume DOES matter . Why use a format that fails to distinguish you from other candidates?

As you can see in this Chief Revenue Officer resume, important elements such as achievements, skills, metrics, and a personal quote are set off with headings, color, and precise placement.

STILL unconvinced that layout matters? This resume eye-tracking study  shows why a clean, clear format is essential.

Your LinkedIn Resume Builder-generated resume will “hide” your education.

Most employers want to see your education details to gauge your qualifications. Unfortunately, your LinkedIn Resume buries this data all the way at the bottom of your document.

Yes, hiring authorities can scroll down to see it, but remember the 6-7 second rule? Most will just glance at your resume and assume something is missing.

executive resume education

When LinkedIn Resume Builder produces your resume, it will only grab your top 3 Skills.

If you believe an ATS (Applicant Tracking System) or employer is only seeking 3 keywords, you’re MISTAKEN.

To be effective, both your LinkedIn Profile and resume will need a multitude of keywords suited for the exact career level you’re pursuing (see point #5 in What Your Resume Should Look Like ).

These terms must be scattered throughout your document to be most effective. You can also create a short grouping to show both ATS and human readers a strong snapshot of skills gained throughout your career. LinkedIn’s Resume Builder will unfortunately NOT allow you to do this.

Your LinkedIn Profile probably doesn’t address your career gaps or other problems.

A well-written resume isn’t a recitation of past jobs: it’s a MARKETING document intended to put your best foot forward.

LinkedIn, on the other hand, is designed to present your career history in a straightforward manner.

If your career has significant gaps, you’ll need a plan for how to present (and explain) these period in your work history. Take a look at 5 Strategies for Handling a Gap on Your Resume – and apply these ideas to your LinkedIn Profile, too.

In summary, using LinkedIn to build your resume has serious limitations.

It may be a relief to generate a resume with little-to-no effort, especially if you’re new to resume writing.

But if you haven’t fully populated your LinkedIn Profile, you’re in for a big challenge.  Even if you HAVE updated LinkedIn, you may not be able to feature top achievements (due to corporate confidentiality).

So you’ll still need to put in the work and document your biggest successes, personal brand, quantifiable career wins, and promise of value… whether you choose to work with a skilled resume writer or dedicate hours to writing a resume for yourself.

UFC 298: Topuria dethrones Volkanovski with emphatic KO victory

Ilia Topuria celebrates in disbelief after knocking out Alexander Volkanovski in the main event of UFC 298. (1:26)

We have a new UFC featherweight champion.

Alexander Volkanovski 's time atop the 145-pound throne is over as Ilia Topuria stunned the champion Saturday night with a second-round KO to become the new titleholder in Anaheim, California. Topuria, now on a seven-fight winning streak in the UFC and a 15-0 overall record, brings the first UFC title to Spain. Topuria joins an exclusive list as just the fifth champion in the division, joining Volkanovski, Max Holloway , Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor .

For Volkanovski, his reign concludes in the division he's owned for nearly seven years, with his 11-fight winning streak at featherweight ending. Volkanovski, 35, adds another loss to a discouraging stat for older fighters -- as with his loss, male fighters aged 35 and over are now 0-15 in UFC title fights at 155 pounds and under.

Brett Okamoto, Marc Raimondi and Jeff Wagenheim break down all the action from a drama-filled fight card in Anaheim.

"Really ironic": Analyst warns Trump's $400 golden sneaker drop "could be a lawsuit in the making"

The shoe trump is hawking after $355 million ruling could cost him even more money in court, cnn analyst says, by tatyana tandanpolie.

The red soles of Donald Trump's new sneaker line, a golden pair of which went for up to $400 a pop, could land the former president in deeper legal trouble than he's already in, a CNN analyst argued Monday. Political commentator Maria Cardona, a self-described "shoe diva" with knowledge of high-end shoe designer Christian Louboutin's recent trademark lawsuits over his signature red sole, told CNN's Wolf Blitzer that upon seeing the shoe, "I said, this is yet another lawsuit in the making."

"Louboutin, who is a hugely famous top-line designer of women's shoes ... his shoes famously have a red sole," Cardona said. "He has been in some lawsuits before where the court at the European Union , the court in India have said this red sole is a trademark of this shoe designer."

She added: "It would be really ironic for this thing that Donald Trump did in order to make money to pay his lawsuits to accrue yet another additional lawsuit."

The former president's shoe drop comes on the heels of his nearly $355 million plus interest fraud judgment  last week as an effort to abate his mounting legal fees, which also include the $83 million in damages he owes to defamed writer E. Jean Carroll. In addition to the red rubber soles, the gilded "Never Surrender High-Top" features matching gold laces, an American flag on the collar and an embossed "T" on the side. According to The New York Times , two low-top sneakers in red or white are for sale for just under $200 as well as  $100 "Victory47" fragrances. The shoes sold out just hours after their launch, Axios reported .

‘Constellation’ Review: Alice in Wonderspace

A sci-fi mystery from Apple TV+ turns quantum physics into a dark fairy tale.

  • Share full article

A woman in a spacesuit looks concerned

By Mike Hale

In “Constellation” on Apple TV+, the Swedish actress Noomi Rapace stars as Jo Ericsson, an astronaut whose time on the International Space Station takes a tragic and mysterious turn. The superbly capable Jo battles overwhelming odds to get back to Earth and to decipher why she feels so out of place once she’s there. But the real hero of the story — its emotional center and vigilant conscience — is Jo’s young daughter, a solemn girl with a significant name: Alice. To understand what’s up with her mom, she’ll have to go through the looking glass.

The uneven but seductively spooky “Constellation,” which premieres with three of its eight episodes on Wednesday, is a space adventure, mystery and family drama spun from the unstable fabric of quantum physics. People, places and events look different from episode to episode and scene to scene; when a NASA scientist tells Jo that curiosity killed the cat, he is definitely referring to the poor animal inside Schrödinger’s box .

In storytelling terms, though, the real quantum entanglement is that of straight science-fiction action with dark fairy tale. The show’s creator and writer, Peter Harness, working with the directors Michelle MacLaren, Oliver Hirschbiegel and Joseph Cedar, carries off both with aplomb, and maintains a dry tone and an appealing atmosphere of foreboding. The mechanics of the narrative, as “Constellation” shifts through its different gears, can be creaky, but the show continually draws you in.

The main action begins with a bang, as an unidentified bit of debris cripples the space station during an experiment that seeks “a new state of matter.” Across two episodes the echoes of Alfonso Cuarón’s “Gravity” are heavy as Jo, left alone in the station, deals with a cascade of problems while trying to escape in a Soyuz capsule. Where “Gravity” ended, though, “Constellation” is just getting started. The resourcefulness and sanity Jo displays in space define her for the audience, so that we stay on her side when things start to go wrong on Earth.

Jo’s memories — of names, cars, relationships — do not completely jibe with what she finds when she gets home to Sweden, and the show slides from adventure into increasingly paranoid thriller, smoothly though perhaps with more time-jumping confusion and open questions than some viewers will have patience for. It plays fair, however — by Episode 6 things begin to come clear. At which point Jo and Alice head into the dark northern woods.

And here the show shifts again, into its fairy-tale mode, with breadcrumb trails, howling winds, a seemingly magical closet and a child who carries the weight of understanding and judgment. The form of this section serves as a correlative for the strangeness of modern science — the explanation of what has happened to Jo, even though it is grounded in physics, plays out like fantasy.

Not everything in “Constellation” achieves liftoff. A parallel plot featuring Jonathan Banks of “Better Call Saul” as the former astronaut who designed the onboard experiment feels like warmed-over noir, and Banks doesn’t have his usual force. James D’Arcy can’t do much with the underwritten role of Jo’s milquetoast husband.

Rapace is solid as the hyper-rational Jo, however, and the British twins Davina and Rosie Coleman are excellent as the sad-eyed, levelheaded Alice. “Constellation” answers, or suggests answers for, most of the questions it poses, but it leaves the door open for a second season in which the looking glass will still need to be traversed.

Putin's Tucker Carlson interview seems timed to inflict maximum damage on US support for Ukraine

  • Vladimir Putin gave his first interview with a Western media figure since invading Ukraine.
  • It was with Tucker Carlson, who has long been more sympathetic to Putin than most of the US media.
  • The interview seems timed to further corrode US support for Ukraine.

Insider Today

As Tucker Carlson was hyping his interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin, US support for Ukraine hit a new low.

Wednesday saw another congressional attempt to get more aid to Ukraine unceremoniously collapse — keeping a proposed $66 billion injection of aid out of reach.

The timing doesn't feel like a coincidence.

The interview with Putin , due to drop on Thursday evening, gives the Russian president a golden opportunity to erode further the likelihood that the US will pass any more funding for Ukraine.

The Biden administration tried to pass a bill that would, in one stroke, satisfy three aims: get aid to Ukraine and Israel and also enhance security at the US southern border.

The latter was meant to placate the Republican Party, meeting their demands for action at the border. But the party's hardliners still rejected it, and with it, the best chance of getting further support to Ukraine.

Without US support, Ukraine's struggles against Russia are intensifying .

It's a moment Putin has long been waiting for: Analysts have long believed that Putin has been waging a war of attrition , betting that he had more staying power than Ukraine's Western allies.

In Carlson, Putin has found an interviewer likely to be receptive to his views.

Carlson has been accused of echoing Russian propaganda and misinformation on Ukraine and has questioned why the US should be spending billions to help the country defend itself.

During his time in Russia, Carlson has already been accused of pushing falsehoods. Even the Kremlin said he was wrong to claim no other Western journalist had even tried to interview Putin.

Putin's officials said they'd just turned everybody else down.

Many took issue with Carlson's omission of other reporters whose efforts were met not with an invitation to Moscow but with a prison cell.

The Wall Street Journal's Evan Gershkovich and Radio Free Europe's Alsu Kurmasheva have been locked up for months. Many Russian journalists have fled the country for fear they, too, will be punished.

Carlson is already a celebrated figure among pro-Kremlin propagandists in Russia , with clips from his shows broadcast frequently on state TV. The BBC noted that his every move in Russia had been widely reported on.

Though Carlson is a diminished figure after his days as Fox News' highest-rated host, he still has a huge audience among the Republicans Putin is seeking to reach out to.

Putin and other Kremlin figures have long tailored their propaganda to appeal to the Republican right , seeking to portray Russia as a bastion of Christian conservative ideals.

Carlson's skepticism about Ukraine aid has also been championed by former President Donald Trump, the GOP 2024 frontrunner, and his supporters in Congress. It's fast spreading among Republican voters who previously agreed with US support for Ukraine.

With the GOP holding the fate of future Ukraine aid, Carlson is handing Putin an opportunity to address the party's supporters directly on Thursday.
