Eliot Michaelson, Jessica Pepp, and Rachel Sterken consider the implications of amplificatory speech in online communication.

It’s hard to deny that the digital age, and especially the smartphone revolution, has changed the way we communicate. Written messages, once ponderously slow, now travel virtually instantaneously to even one’s most distant acquaintances. With text and email exchanges taking place at roughly the same speed as verbal ones, written communication has become much more casual. This is no surprise – after all, if you can correct a misinterpretation almost as soon as it happens, why spend hours, minutes, or even seconds agonizing over the clearest way of putting what you are trying to say? Just say something and see if it works.

The shift to online communication has also brought with it a variety of new tools: hashtags, hyperlinks, and a standardized range of emojis and emoticons, of both the ASCII variety (“;)” or “¯\_(ツ)_/¯”) and the newer, more stylized kind (“😉” or “🤷🏿”). Linguistic analysis suggests that the latter kind have more standardized meanings than an individualized smiley face once might have, and have also given rise to morphological effects like duplication (“👍👍”).

It is far less clear, however, whether the shift to online communication has given rise to any fundamentally new forms of speech. Are there things we can do with our words – “speech acts,” in philosophical parlance – in the online world that we can’t do offline? We’re not certain whether the shift to online speech has given rise to any completely new types of speech acts, but we do want to draw attention to a type of speech act that has at least become much more pervasive because of online speech, especially on social media platforms. This is the speech act of amplification. Amplification has taken on a structural significance in online speech that is totally unprecedented in earlier, offline speech. Understanding the structure of online speech, therefore, requires understanding the nature of amplification.

Here’s one example of what we mean by amplification: Smith, who is rather shy, makes an excellent point in the course of a philosophy seminar. But they make the point too quietly for it to be heard by anyone but Jones, who is sitting right next to them. Taking care to make clear that they are merely repeating Smith’s idea, Jones restates what Smith said at a volume that others can hear. Commands and other exercises of authority can be amplified as well as suggestions and assertions. For example, suppose Diaz is trying to call a meeting to order, but cannot be heard over the boisterous conversation of the various participants. Martín intervenes by repeating Diaz’s calls to order, but at a much higher volume – effectively cutting through the cacophony.

It’s important not to conflate amplification with a nearby phenomenon which we might call “appropriation”: repeating a point that has been made by someone else, but which has been dismissed or ignored when coming from their mouth because they have either been interpreted uncharitably or presumed not to be credible (all too often because of their race, gender, ethnicity, non-conforming features, etc.). In cases of amplification, in contrast to cases of appropriation, the amplifier takes reasonable steps to see to it that the original speaker retains credit for their contribution to the conversation.

As the examples we just gave show, amplification is possible in ordinary face-to-face conversations. But it isn’t very common (it may be more common than we have made it out to be, depending on how we think about, for instance, quotation – but we will set that tricky issue to the side). Indeed, amplification in ordinary speech is uncommon enough that nothing like it is mentioned in any of the standard taxonomies of speech acts (such as those found in J.L. Austin’s seminal 1962 book, How to Do Things with Words, in John Searle’s 1969 book, Speech Acts, or Kent Bach and Robert Harnish’s 1979 book, Linguistic Communication and Speech Acts). In online speech though, amplification is an extremely important thing that we do with our words.

Consider “liking” on Facebook: in liking some content, one may well be expressing agreement or some other positive attitude towards it. But, inevitably, one is also interacting with Facebook’s ranking algorithm by means of this act. That algorithm tends to rank posts higher when they have received greater levels of engagement, in the form of likes, shares, or comments – particularly, shares by your “friends” and their “friends”. This means that, within the communicative system set up by Facebook, liking inevitably involves an element of amplification, even if it often involves more than that as well. Part of what it is to like a post is to make it more likely that your “friends” see the post, and for that post to become an acknowledged part of the conversation between you.

Retweeting is another type of online speech act that seems to be largely an amplificatory act. Whatever else one might manage to express via a retweet (approval, endorsement mockery, scorn, etc.), retweeting a tweet has the effect of ranking it higher both in general and, in particular, amongst one’s followers.

And because of how the retweet function and similar functions are designed, there isn’t much risk of people using them to appropriate rather than amplify. Unlike offline means of amplification, online amplification via retweeting on Twitter or sharing on Facebook is designed to automatically credit the content to its original creator, as a share or retweet preserves something like a copy of the original post along with its metadata.

At this point, you might have the following worry: given that, as best anyone can tell, ranking algorithms don’t just take account of likes and retweets, but also screen time engagement, don’t we risk having to say that merely watching a cute cat video, or watching it several times over, amounts to engaging in the speech act of amplification? Intuitively, that seems a strange thing to say; after all, we don’t typically think of reading or viewing or similar passive activities as speech acts, though undoubtedly these are acts which (often) involve language.

The reason why these passive consumption activities are not speech acts of amplification is that these activities do not have a characteristic aim of amplifying the content consumed. That’s not to say that no one could ever watch a video with the express aim of making it more visible to others. But this aim is not characteristic of the act of watching a video. And speech acts are at least partly defined by their characteristic aims: an assertion is an act whose characteristic aim is to inform someone, a command is an act whose characteristic aim is to direct someone's actions, and so on. Again, that's not to say that acts of these types always have these aims. Likewise, retweeting might not always be aimed at amplifying the original post. But amplification might well be the characteristic aim of retweeting and other forms of resharing.

Now let’s consider a different sort of worry. We’ve allowed that amplification is not usually all that people want to achieve with a like or retweet. So why count likes and retweets as amplificatory speech acts as opposed to just acknowledging that they have amplificatory side-effects? We can break this worry down into two parts. First, there is the question of whether liking or retweeting are speech acts at all. Second, there is the question of whether they are specifically amplificatory speech acts.

Starting with the first question, consider that liking and bare retweeting (that is, retweeting without any comment) might at first appear to be mere button pushing. After all, these acts typically amount to little more than pressing a small icon on one’s phone. So why think of these as speech acts, which one might reasonably expect to involve the production of language?

The way we see it is that different social media platforms have set up different structural contexts, different systems, within which speech can take place. Twitter limits the length of your posts, Instagram didn’t initially support hashtags, and so on. These contexts and systems build on those in which face-to-face conversation has always taken place, but they also add new means of interaction. One of the basic ways in which social media platforms allow their users to interact with others’ posts is via liking and retweeting or sharing. Importantly, these aren’t private ways of interacting with others’ posts. Rather, this behavior will, at the very least, be evident to one’s “friends” or “followers”. And it will be evident in terms of its effect on raw numbers to anyone on the platform. So liking and retweeting appear to be outward, other-directed ways of interacting with the speech of others.

Earlier we mentioned the characteristic aims of speech acts, and it’s worth asking what the characteristic aims of liking and retweeting are. In the case of liking something on Facebook or Twitter, it’s probably not amplification, but something more like serving to express a positive attitude (agreement, acceptance, amusement, etc.) towards the relevant content. But this is enough to make it a bona fide speech act, and amplification is a predictable, if often unintended, secondary effect of that act.

Bare retweeting, on the other hand, is a much better candidate for being a primarily amplificatory speech act. We have to be a little careful in how we make this suggestion, because ultimately we think that bare retweeting is too basic an act to have a characteristic aim. (We have written about this in a not-yet-published paper called “On Retweeting.”) Like uttering a sentence, retweeting a tweet can be used to do a wide range of things in different sorts of contexts, such as endorsing, condemning, mocking, informing, exhorting, and much more. To retweet is to make use of a bit of communicative structure that has many uses, in much the same way as to utter a declarative sentence of English is to make use of a bit of linguistic structure which can be used not only to assert things, but also to make requests, give commands, offer permission or advice, make pronouncements, and even ask questions.

That said, we are also inclined to think that a great many bare retweets are used to perform amplificatory speech acts. Consider the controversy over whether a retweet constitutes an endorsement: this is clearly a widespread view, as you can tell by the number of people who take the time to reject it in their Twitter bios. We think this view is wrong for a variety of reasons, one of which is that it simply fails to match up with the experience of bare retweeting. In our own experience at least, we often retweet and share items precisely because we find them of interest in one way or another and we simply wish to bring them to our friends’ and acquaintances’ attention. This sort of intention squares nicely with the view that these retweets are amplificatory speech acts. It would also go some way towards explaining why so many have been tempted to view retweeting as a form of endorsement: it is a natural enough assumption that the posts we hope to amplify are the very same ones that we endorse. But, in fact, we can aim to amplify posts which lack the right sort of content to endorse, as with questions or pictures, or which we have no interest in endorsing but merely find interesting, offensive, entertaining, and so on.

To summarize the argument so far: we began with the question of whether online speech environments have given rise to fundamentally new forms of speech, or speech acts. Rather than arguing directly for the “yes” answer, we instead chose to focus on a sort of speech act, amplification, which exists in offline conversations but is rare enough to have received virtually no attention in earlier philosophical investigations. Amplificatory speech, we then suggested, plays a prominent role in our contemporary online speech environments. This comes both in the form of direct amplificatory speech acts, such as a great deal of bare retweeting and sharing, and as at least a secondary effect of commented retweeting, commenting on a post, liking, and reacting.

In fact, we take the pervasiveness of amplification to be one of the most significant differences between online and offline speech: whereas offline, reacting to a given bit of speech might well serve to make that speech more prominent in the memory of those present, such reactions don’t directly increase the likelihood of others encountering the relevant bits of speech (except perhaps as a side-effect of mnemonic prominence). In online speech environments, the more that we interact with a given bit of speech, the more likely others are to come across it. So amplification has, effectively, gone from a vanishingly rare speech act and relatively weak secondary effect of other speech acts to a common type of speech act and a near universal, strong secondary effect.

What are the upshots of this shift? While we lack the space to delve too deeply into this question, we’ll mention one rather important upshot. The inevitability of amplification in the current structure of online speech makes it harder to determine the best response to problematic speech. As Robert Mark Simpson and Amia Srinivasan point out in their 2018 paper, “No Platforming,” it has probably always been too simplistic to think that the best way to confront problematic speech is with more speech, since this ignores the social significance of treating certain positions as positions to be taken seriously at all. But this approach becomes even more suspect in online speech environments. For unlike in a face-to-face conversation or even newspaper editorial, when one comments on or responds to a tweet or Facebook post, one also inevitably amplifies that original post, making it more likely that others will see it. This is an inevitable side-effect of the way that our social media ranking algorithms currently function. One question we ought to consider, then, is whether this is a desirable way for such algorithms to function. Another question is how we, as individuals, ought to respond to the recognition of this situation. We’re pessimistic about the prospects of offering a general theory of when and how individuals ought to respond to online hate speech and disinformation, for instance. But we can confidently say that when responding to such speech on- as opposed to off-line, there is another salient factor to consider: no matter how compelling your response might be, under present conditions, it will inevitably serve to amplify the very speech that you are responding to.

We know that communication is effortless, but miscommunication between two or more individuals sometimes leads to conflicts and distress. Building relationships at home, work, and social affairs will be easier if you know the right way to communicate effectively. It is required to have better communication skills such as non-verbal communication, listening and managing stress can improve the relationship between individuals.

Communication is essential for all of us, whether humans or animals. Communication is a part of written and spoken language, and altogether it completes the communication process. Both use different languages to communicate because it’s hard to survive in this world without communication.

Communication Essay Introduction

An introduction is the first paragraph of an essay. It should grab the reader’s attention, provide clarifying details, and present the main argument. The three main components of an introduction are a hook, background information, and thesis statement .

  • A hook is usually the first sentence of an introduction. Its purpose is to capture the readers’ attention and engage them. It can be a question, a surprising fact, a quote, or a provocative statement.
  • Background information provides context for the central argument. It should give enough knowledge to help the reader understand the topic and its significance.
  • A thesis statement is the main point of the essay. It explains what the paper will argue or explore. Your thesis should be specific, debatable, and focused.

Thesis statement : Effective communication is essential for building and maintaining relationships, achieving common goals, and resolving conflicts, and it can be achieved through clear and concise language, active listening, and nonverbal cues.

Body Paragraphs about Communication

The main body of an essay presents and develops the arguments or ideas in detail. It is vital to have a clear structure, including topic sentences, supporting evidence, and analysis .

  • Topic sentences should state the main idea of each paragraph and relate to the thesis statement.
  • Supporting evidence should back up the topic sentence and be relevant and credible.
  • The analysis explains how the evidence supports the topic sentence and the thesis statement.
Topic sentence : Effective communication requires active listening skills. Supporting evidence : According to a study by communication experts, active listening involves giving full attention to the speaker, maintaining eye contact, and asking clarifying questions (Smith & Jones, 2018).

Essays on Communication: Conclusion

The conclusion of an essay should include the main points and arguments, restated thesis statement, and some final thoughts.

What this handout is about.

This handout describes some steps for planning and writing papers in communication studies courses.

Courses in communication studies combine material from the humanities, fine arts, and social sciences in order to explain how and why people interact in the ways that they do. Within communication studies, there are four different approaches to understanding these interactions. Your course probably falls into one of these four areas of emphasis:

  • Interpersonal and organizational communication: Interpersonal communication concerns one-on-one conversations as well as small group behaviors. Organizational communication focuses on large group dynamics.
  • Rhetoric: Rhetoric examines persuasion and argumentation in political settings and within social movements.
  • Performance studies: Performance studies analyze the relationships among literature, theater, and everyday life.
  • Media/film studies: Media and film studies explore the cultural influences and practical techniques of television and film, as well as new technologies.

Understanding your assignment

The content and purpose of your assignments will vary according to what kind of course you are in, so pay close attention to the course description, syllabus, and assignment sheet when you begin to write. For now, let’s see how a general topic, same-sex friendships, might be treated in each of the different areas. These illustrations are only examples, but you can use them as springboards to help you identify how your course might approach discussing a broad topic.

Interpersonal communication

An interpersonal communication perspective could focus on the verbal and nonverbal differences and similarities between how women communicate with other women and how men communicate with other men. This topic would allow you to explore the ways in which gender affects our behaviors in close relationships.

Organizational communication

Organizational communication would take a less personal approach, perhaps by addressing same-sex friendships in the form of workplace mentoring programs that pair employees of the same sex. This would require you to discuss and analyze group dynamics and effectiveness in the work environment.

A rhetorical analysis could involve comparing and contrasting references to friendship in the speeches of two well-known figures. For instance, you could compare Aristotle’s comments about Plato to Plato’s comments about Aristotle in order to discover more about the relationship between these two men and how each defined their friendship and/or same-sex friendship in general.

Performance studies

A performance approach might involve describing how a literary work uses dramatic conventions to portray same-sex friendships, as well as critiquing how believable those portrayals are. An analysis of the play Waiting for Godot could unpack the lifelong friendship between the two main characters by identifying what binds the men together, how these ties are effectively or ineffectively conveyed to the audience, and what the play teaches us about same-sex friendships in our own lives.

Media and film studies

Finally, a media and film studies analysis might explain the evolution of a same-sex friendship by examining a cinematic text. For example, you could trace the development of the main friendship in the movie Thelma and Louise to discover how certain events or gender stereotypes affect the relationship between the two female characters.

General writing tips

Writing papers in communication studies often requires you to do three tasks common to academic writing: analyze material, read and critique others’ analyses of material, and develop your own argument around that material. You will need to build an original argument (sometimes called a “theory” or “plausible explanation”) about how a communication phenomenon can be better understood. The word phenomenon can refer to a particular communication event, text, act, or conversation. To develop an argument for this kind of paper, you need to follow several steps and include several kinds of information in your paper. (For more information about developing an argument, see our handout on arguments ). First, you must demonstrate your knowledge of the phenomenon and what others have said about it. This usually involves synthesizing previous research or ideas. Second, you must develop your own original perspective, reading, or “take” on the phenomenon and give evidence to support your way of thinking about it. Your “take” on the topic will constitute your “argument,” “theory,” or “explanation.” You will need to write a thesis statement that encapsulates your argument and guides you and the reader to the main point of your paper. Third, you should critically analyze the arguments of others in order to show how your argument contributes to our general understanding of the phenomenon. In other words, you should identify the shortcomings of previous research or ideas and explain how your paper corrects some or all of those deficits. Assume that your audience for your paper includes your classmates as well as your instructor, unless otherwise indicated in the assignment.

Choosing a topic to write about

Your topic might be as specific as the effects of a single word in conversation (such as how the use of the word “well” creates tentativeness in dialogue) or as broad as how the notion of individuality affects our relationships in public and private spheres of human activity. In deciding the scope of your topic, look again at the purpose of the course and the aim of the assignment. Check with your instructor to gauge the appropriateness of your topic before you go too far in the writing process.

Try to choose a topic in which you have some interest or investment. Your writing for communications will not only be about the topic, but also about yourself—why you care about the topic, how it affects you, etc. It is common in the field of communication studies not only to consider why the topic intrigues you, but also to write about the experiences and/or cognitive processes you went through before choosing your topic. Including this kind of introspection helps readers understand your position and how that position affects both your selection of the topic and your analysis within the paper. You can make your argument more persuasive by knowing what is at stake, including both objective research and personal knowledge in what you write.

Using evidence to support your ideas

Your argument should be supported with evidence, which may include, but is not limited to, related studies or articles, films or television programs, interview materials, statistics, and critical analysis of your own making. Relevant studies or articles can be found in such journals as Journal of Communication , Quarterly Journal of Speech , Communication Education , and Communication Monographs . Databases, such as Infotrac and ERIC, may also be helpful for finding articles and books on your topic (connecting to these databases via NC Live requires a UNC IP address or UNC PID). As always, be careful when using Internet materials—check your sources to make sure they are reputable.

Refrain from using evidence, especially quotations, without explicitly and concretely explaining what the evidence shows in your own words. Jumping from quote to quote does not demonstrate your knowledge of the material or help the reader recognize the development of your thesis statement. A good paper will link the evidence to the overall argument by explaining how the two correspond to one another and how that relationship extends our understanding of the communication phenomenon. In other words, each example and quote should be explained, and each paragraph should relate to the topic.

As mentioned above, your evidence and analysis should not only support the thesis statement but should also develop it in ways that complement your paper’s argument. Do not just repeat the thesis statement after each section of your paper; instead, try to tell what that section adds to the argument and what is special about that section when the thesis statement is taken into consideration. You may also include a discussion of the paper’s limitations. Describing what cannot be known or discussed at this time—perhaps because of the limited scope of your project, lack of new research, etc.—keeps you honest and realistic about what you have accomplished and shows your awareness of the topic’s complexity.

Communication studies idiosyncrasies

  • Using the first person (I/me) is welcomed in nearly all areas of communication studies. It is probably best to ask your professor to be sure, but do not be surprised if you are required to talk about yourself within the paper as a researcher, writer, and/or subject. Some assignments may require you to write from a personal perspective and expect you to use “I” to express your ideas.
  • Always include a Works Cited (MLA) or References list (APA) unless you are told not to. Not giving appropriate credit to those whom you quote or whose ideas inform your argument is plagiarism. More and more communication studies courses are requiring bibliographies and in-text citations with each writing assignment. Ask your professor which citation format (MLA/APA) to use and see the corresponding handbook for citation rules.

Two Exceptional Journalism Students Share 2024 Gridiron Scholarship Award

The Gridiron Club and Foundation of D.C. has been a long-standing financial supporter of American University School of Communication (AU SOC) journalism students.

Our latest scholarship applications asked students to articulate the role of journalism in democracy while identifying two challenges facing the industry and their plans to tackle those issues.

A judging panel made up of professional journalists was impressed with the thoughtful, passionate responses. The competition was intense, with a significant number of excellent entries.

We’re thrilled to announce our two winners for 2024. The $5,000 scholarship pool was split between one highly qualified undergraduate journalism major and one graduate student in the Journalism and Digital Storytelling (JRDS) program.

"The Journalism and Digital Storytelling graduate program has allowed me to exercise my creativity while learning new skills that will prepare me for success in a modern journalism field. Elite College Admissions Have Turned Students Into Brands

“I just can’t think of anything,” my student said.

After 10 years of teaching college essay writing, I was familiar with this reply. For some reason, when you’re asked to recount an important experience from your life, it is common to forget everything that has ever happened to you. It’s a long-form version of the anxiety that takes hold at a corporate retreat when you’re invited to say “one interesting thing about yourself,” and you suddenly believe that you are the most boring person in the entire world. Once during a version of this icebreaker, a man volunteered that he had only one kidney, and I remember feeling incredibly jealous of him.

I tried to jog this student’s memory. What about his love of music? Or his experience learning English? Or that time on a summer camping trip when he and his friends had nearly drowned? “I don’t know,” he said with a sigh. “That all seems kind of cliché.”

Applying to college has always been about standing out. When I teach college essay workshops and coach applicants one on one, I see my role as helping students to capture their voice and their way of processing the world, things that are, by definition, unique to each individual. Still, many of my students (and their parents) worry that as getting into college becomes increasingly competitive, this won’t be enough to set them apart.

Their anxiety is understandable. On Thursday, in a tradition known as “Ivy Day,” all eight Ivy League schools released their regular admission decisions. Top colleges often issue statements about how impressive (and competitive) their applicant pools were this cycle. The intention is to flatter accepted students and assuage rejected ones, but for those who have not yet applied to college, these statements reinforce the fear that there is an ever-expanding cohort of applicants with straight A’s and perfect SATs and harrowing camping trip stories all competing with one another for a vanishingly small number of spots.

This scarcity has led to a boom in the college consulting industry, now estimated to be a $2.9 billion business. In recent years, many of these advisers and companies have begun to promote the idea of personal branding — a way for teenagers to distinguish themselves by becoming as clear and memorable as a good tagline.

While this approach often leads to a strong application, students who brand themselves too early or too definitively risk missing out on the kind of exploration that will prepare them for adult life.

Like a corporate brand, the personal brand is meant to distill everything you stand for (honesty, integrity, high quality, low prices) into a cohesive identity that can be grasped at a glance. On its website, a college prep and advising company called Dallas Admissions explains the benefits of branding this way: “Each person is complex, yet admissions officers only have a small amount of time to spend learning about each prospective student. The smart student boils down key aspects of himself or herself into their personal ‘brand’ and sells that to the college admissions officer.”

Identifying the key aspects of yourself may seem like a lifelong project, but unfortunately, college applicants don’t have that kind of time. Online, there are dozens of lesson plans and seminars promising to walk students through the process of branding themselves in five to 10 easy steps. The majority begin with questions I would have found panic-inducing as a teenager, such as, “What is the story you want people to tell about you when you’re not in the room?”

Where I hoped others would describe me as “normal” or, in my wildest dreams, “cool,” today’s teenagers are expected to leave this exercise with labels like, Committed Athlete and Compassionate Leader or Environmentally Conscious Musician. Once students have a draft of their ideal self, they’re offered instructions for manifesting it (or at least, the appearance of it) in person and online. These range from common-sense tips (not posting illegal activity on social media) to more drastic recommendations (getting different friends).

It’s not just that these courses cut corners on self-discovery; it’s that they get the process backward. A personal brand is effective only if you can support it with action, so instead of finding their passion and values through experience, students are encouraged to select a passion as early as possible and then rack up the experience to substantiate it. Many college consultants suggest beginning to align your activities with your college ambitions by ninth grade, while the National Institute of Certified College Planners recommends students “talk with parents, guardians, and/or an academic adviser to create a clear plan for your education and career-related goals” in junior high.

The idea of a group of middle schoolers soberly mapping out their careers is both comical and depressing, but when I read student essays today, I can see that this advice is getting through. Over the past few years, I have been struck by how many high school seniors already have defined career goals as well as a C.V. of relevant extracurriculars to go with them. This widens the gap between wealthy students and those who lack the resources to secure a fancy research gig or start their own small business. (A shocking number of college applicants claim to have started a small business.) It also puts pressure on all students to define themselves at a moment when they are anxious to fit in and yet changing all the time.

In the world of branding, a word that appears again and again is “consistency.” If you are Charmin, that makes sense. People opening a roll of toilet paper do not want to be surprised. If you are a teenage human being, however, that is an unreasonable expectation. Changing one’s interests, opinions and presentation is a natural part of adolescence and an instructive one. I find that my students with scattershot résumés are often the most confident. They’re not afraid to push back against suggestions that ring false and will insist on revising their essay until it actually “feels like me.” On the other hand, many of my most accomplished students are so quick to accept feedback that I am wary of offering it, lest I become one more adult trying to shape them into an admission-worthy ideal.

I understand that for parents, prioritizing exploration can feel like a risky bet. Self-insight is hard to quantify and to communicate in a college application. When it comes to building a life, however, this kind of knowledge has more value than any accolade, and it cannot be generated through a brainstorming exercise in a six-step personal branding course online. To equip kids for the world, we need to provide them not just with opportunities for achievement, but with opportunities to fail, to learn, to wander and to change their minds.

In some ways, the college essay is a microcosm of modern adolescence. Depending on how you look at it, it’s either a forum for self-discovery or a high-stakes test you need to ace. I try to assure my students that it is the former. I tell them that it’s a chance to take stock of everything you’ve experienced and learned over the past 18 years and everything you have to offer as a result.

That can be a profound process. But to embark on it, students have to believe that colleges really want to see the person behind the brand. And they have to have the chance to know who that person is.
