as Superman in Man of Steel

Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive… The Man of Steel fights a never-ending battle for truth, justice, and the American way.

From his blue uniform to his flowing red cape to the "S" shield on his chest, Superman is one of the most immediately recognizable and beloved DC Super Heroes of all time. The Man of Steel is the ultimate symbol of truth, justice, and hope. He is the world's first Super Hero and a guiding light to all.

The tip of the spear in a revolution that would change the landscape of pop culture, Superman has spent the last eighty years redefining what it means to stand for truth, justice and the American way. The last survivor of the doomed planet Krypton, raised in the quiet heartland of Smallville, Kansas, Superman is as much a legend as he is a man: the gold standard of heroism, compassion and responsibility.

Though his powers make him god-like next to his human compatriots, Superman's story is not one of greed or conquest. Instead, he strives to represent the inherent goodness of the human spirit, and the capacity of every living thing to do right by their neighbors.

Superman, known by his birth name Kal-El , also known as on Earth as Clark Joseph Kent , is a superhero and the title character and main protagonist of the Superman comic book series, as well as one of the protagonists of the DC Universe, and is one of the main protagonists of the Justice League franchise. He is considered to be one of the most powerful heroes in the DC Universe and is arguably the first major superhero.

Superman is an Kryptonian from the planet called Krypton. As a baby, he was sent to Earth in a spaceship by his scientist father Jor-El, moments before Krypton was destroyed in a natural cataclysm. His ship landed in the American countryside, where he was discovered and adopted by a farming couple. He discovered his various superhuman powers and abilities at a young age, such as superhuman strength, speed, agility, stamina, invulnerability, heat vision, that allows him to shoot powerful laser beams from his eyes, x-ray-vision, sense, hearing, breathing, and ability to fly at high supersonic speeds, his powers were derived from the yellow sun thanks to his solar energy absorption, which he now uses it to fight crime and benefit the humanity as Superman.

Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster created Superman in 1933 and made his debut in Action Comics #1 (1938), since then he has appeared in many comics, TV shows, and movies and is widely recognized as one of the most iconic heroes of all time, and as the character who defined the superhero genre.

Personality [ ]

Superman is commonly thought of as the purest of all heroes due to his upstanding, highly ethical nature. Righteous, brave, and kind to a fault, he makes a point not to kill, will not resort to violence unless it is truly necessary, and there are only a handful of villains that he actually hates: Lex Luthor, Joker, Mongul, Darkseid, and Brainiac. Not only believing in his ideals, but he also embodies them, and devotes himself to spreading peace and happiness wherever he goes, he is almost universally loved and recognized as the symbol of hope.

It’s this inherent goodness and charisma that allowed him to become good friends with Batman and Wonder Woman , to the point where they form the Justice League . As well as charm the heart of his love interest, the cynical city-girl Lois Lane .

However, despite these virtues, he does suffer from his status as a "last son of Krypton "; his gifts as a constant reminder that he doesn’t “naturally” belong to this world, he does wonder if his idealism might be unfounded in the modern world. Furthermore, seeing how lionized his image has become, Superman sometimes worries that he might not be able to fulfill the image the world has of him.

Also due to the fact that he is a endling of the Kryptonian species, Superman has occasionally suffered from loneliness despite his close kinmanship with humanity. The emergence of other survivors of Krypton like his cousin Supergirl did help remedy this to a extent.

Furthermore, Superman dreads the temptation that his sheer power offers to do whatever he wants, regardless what anyone else thinks, which drives Superman to defer to local authorities as much as he can. Regardless, Superman is still seen as the pinnacle of heroism and an example for everyone to follow.

Powers and Abilities [ ]

  • Invulnerability: Due to the interaction of his dense molecular structure and supercharged bio-electric aura, Superman is nigh-invulnerable to extreme energy forces. In addition, his extends this protection against toxins and diseases. Superman is also highly invulnerable to human-made weapons. For example, a bullet or a knife cannot kill Superman. In the bullet's case, it will reflect off of his body. In the knife's case, it is most likely to shatter the knife's glass or bend the knife. Superman is immune to radiation and its effects. Surprisingly, Superman can pass through areas where normal creatures would succumb to acute radiation syndrome. He can simply detect radioactive substances, through his effects alone and without a Geiger counter. Although Superman is vulnerable to Kryptonian-level radiation, such as kryptonite and red sun radiation, he shows strong resistance to conventional radiation, such as ionizing radiation, which merely bounces off him or sticks to his skin without causing any real damage. Superman is able to survive and adapt to extremely high or low atmospheric pressure (without becoming disoriented or deprived of his normal breathing capacity), as well as high wind friction; this is accompanied by an innate immunity to vertigo and/or fear of heights. Superman's lungs acclimatize and breathe in all gaseous environments, whether hostile or deficient. Clark's lungs also filter out non-gaseous substances such as dust, asbestos and so on. He can breathe toxic gases instead of oxygen and survive air deficiencies in the mountains, in the air or on land, which are among the longest and most painful deaths the average man can suffer. Superman is unaffected by the various effects of rapid acceleration, including air resistance, inability to breathe, dynamic shock resulting from contact with objects at high speed, etc.
  • Absolute Strength: Although the limit of his strength has not been clearly established, Superman can generate unlimited and unrivalled physical force, capable of confronting and even surpassing the strongest beings such as Darkseid and Doomsday with nothing more than the brute force of their physical blows. It doesn't matter how much weight Superman has to lift or move, because his body can emit an unlimited force capable of repelling an object of any mass. Thanks to this force, Superman can cover enormous distances in a single leap, unleash blows of unparalleled power, annihilate massive life forms in a single blow, cause destructive earthquakes by striking the ground, shatter planetary systems with his fists, create space-time anomalies or pass through them with his force, and so on. It should also be noted that he is immune to all powers that can manipulate, affect or deprive him of his strength. On one occasion, he struck so hard that reality itself was affected, bringing people back from the dead and dramatically altering the multiverse around him.
  • Ballistic Heat Vision: Superman can, as a conscious act, fire beams of intense heat at a target by looking at it. He can vary the heat and area affected. In extreme situations, Superman can emit a massive flash of destructive energy in all directions from his entire body, but this will drain all his internal solar reserves enabling his powers, requiring a roughly 24 hour period to recharge.
  • Supernatural Senses: Superman's senses of sight, taste, hearing, touch and smell are far more acute than those of normal humans. He can see thousands of kilometers with immense resolution and see/track things too fast for the natural eye, hear perfectly through dense walls and listen to the slightest vibration/noise from extremely distant places, even in deep space, smell anything over great distances down to individual molecules/atoms, taste the tiniest details to the point of distinguishing them on a molecular level, and feel the slightest vibration in the air, ground and water. Superman has even developed a sixth sense and various extra-sensory abilities, enabling him to perceive things that no ordinary sense can detect. Superman's hearing is sensitive enough to hear any sound at any volume or pitch. With skill and concentration, he can block out ambient sounds to focus on a specific source or frequency. Also, this ability is his best when it comes to eavesdropping on a villain's plans. His hearing is also use for distress calls when people are in trouble or need him. Superman's sense of hearing is infinitely more acute than that of humans, thanks to the rays of the yellow sun. This allows him to hear anything over incredible distances, to hear things that are apparently too silent to be discernible, as well as to hear sounds over an insane range of frequencies, including infrasound, even through extremely thick and thick walls. He is even able to hear individual molecules/atoms and their movements, or even the supernatural/paranormal, including the activities of spirits or immaterial beings and creatures. This also enables him to obtain auditory information about the future or the past. On various occasions, Superman has demonstrated that his sense of smell is significantly enhanced to the point he can smell odors across the entire planet without any problem. Superman has a more acute sense of smell than humans, thanks to the rays of the yellow sun. This means he can smell anything over any distance, including space, as well as individual molecules/atoms.
  • Electromagnetic Vision: Superman can perceive the world around him based solely on magnetic and electrical energy patterns. He is also able to see the natural magnetic auras that surround living beings. Clark can see almost the entire electromagnetic spectrum, and can "tune" his vision to interpret different energy ranges. He can see radio waves (which include AM, FM and TV Frequencies), Radar, Infrared, Visible Light, Ultraviolet, X-Rays and Gamma Rays. He also has Night Vision, which enables him to see perfectly in the dark. Superman can also see the energy flowing through power lines and technological objects (he can tell whether they are active or not). He can determine whether a radio transmitter is on and sending signals. Superman can see through any volume of matter except lead. Superman's can see things behind a solid, opaque object as if it were not there. He can focus this ability to "peel back" layers of an object, allowing hidden image or inner workings to be observed. The exact type of energy perceived - such as x-rays, cosmic rays, or some other energy invisible to normal humans - is unclear. this ability perceives an ambient energy source though, it does not involve the eye projecting a concentrated, possibly toxic, beam to be reflected back from objects. (Occasionally, Superman has used his lead limitation to his advantage: when the Joker tried to distract him claiming that had several hostages in lead-lined airtight coffins all over the city, the villain anticipated that Superman would spend hours frantically searching for them while he fled the city. However, all Superman had to do was to make a wide-angle sweep of the city from the air with his X-ray vision, which made all lead objects there instantly stand out as opaque objects. Thus Superman was able to search them quickly and had plenty of time to capture the Joker in his lead-lined truck, which was similarly easy to spot as a vehicle with an obvious overuse of lead.) Superman is able to perceive the far-infrared spectrum (i.e. heat signatures), enabling him to perceive variations in the temperature of objects and the environment. This ability is incredibly useful for observation purposes, as he is able to perceive the presence of heat from any living target. This power is the ability to see biological or artificial systems to detect infrared radiation. The terms thermal vision and thermal imaging are also commonly used in this context, as a body's infrared emissions are directly related to its temperature: hot objects emit more energy in the infrared spectrum than cold ones. Warmer objects emit more energy in the infrared spectrum than cooler ones. Cooler temperatures appear green or blue, while warmer temperatures appear yellow, dark pink or even red-orange-yellow.
  • Supernatural Speed/Flight: Superman can manipulate graviton particles to defy the forces of gravity and fly. This ranges from hovering to moving in any position, in any direction, which means he can travel faster than relativistic speed. It can move at a speed close to, equal to or greater than the speed of light. He can travel at a speed of 6175 - 1.0793e+7 km/h, exceeding hypersonic speed and reaching relativistic speed at its maximum. Superman has "immeasurable" speed. His speed cannot be measured because he can move beyond linear time. Since speed is equal to distance divided by time (S = D/T), if time is not defined, the speed formula cannot be applied. However, incommensurable speed is superior to infinite speed, which is defined as motion in zero time. The difference between the two is that Superman can travel at infinite speeds and everywhere instantaneously, whereas beings that can travel at immeasurable speeds and everywhere and always faster than instantaneously. Superman has infinite speed. He can cover any distance in "0" time, perceiving beings with finite speed as veritable statues, which only touch him if he lets them. But despite their speed, they remain bound to space and time.
  • Supernatural Health: Superman is able to maintain intense, continuous physical action for an indefinite period of time. This is because his body converts yellow solar radiation directly into energy, but is limited by his physiological and psychological needs to eat, drink and sleep. He can also hold his breath for an indefinite period. In the extreme case of Superman being injured, whether by an alien matching his own strength or by other events, he has the ability to heal almost instantly from moderate wounds, provided the process is not hindered by an external factor, e.g. Kryptonite. This "healing factor" is supplemented by his reserves of solar energy. As his healing factor works faster when he's close to the sun, he must continue to absorb solar energy to heal mortal wounds until the process is complete. The healing factor can keep him strong, healthy and young indefinitely, provided he remains under a yellow sun. Superman is physically, mentally, socially, spiritually and emotionally healthier than other superhumans. He has no physical flaws and is virtually immune to disorders, diseases, disabilities, etc. He can also take a great deal of damage before fainting or collapsing from the effects of illness, and has a superhuman metabolism. Overall, Clark's health is remarkably impressive.
  • Supernatural Mobility: Superman is able to move at incredible speed by sheer force of will. This extends to his perceptions and allows for feats such as catching bullets in mid-flight as well as covering vast distances in little or no time. Superman can run faster than anybody in the world, except for The Flash.
  • Supernatural Breath: Superman is able to create hurricane-force winds by exhaling air from his lungs. He can chill the air as it leaves his lungs to freeze targets. He can also reverse the process to pull large volumes of air or vapor into his lungs.
  • Freezing Breath: With this ability, Superman can release his breath as a freezing version of his vortex breath.
  • Ballstic Scream: Superman can emit extremely powerful sound waves by inhaling deeply and then releasing them by screaming at the top of his lungs, a scream so powerful that it can destroy almost anything it comes into contact with and can be heard the world over (even by the most deaf), whether it's objects, buildings or people, it can also level entire cities, continents, countries and even shake entire planets. Its cry is also capable of jamming and disabling the most advanced electronic and computer equipment.
  • Supernatural Mind: Superman's mind is insanely enhanced by yellow solar rays, enabling him to grasp an infinite amount of information unfolding at very high speed without missing any and retaining them all perfectly, this includes objects from living beings traveling at the speed of light or beyond, he is also able to track his own actions which are immeasurable, a fight with opponents who are gods, such as Doosmday, Darkseid, etc.... As well as performing numerous tasks simultaneously with extreme precision, while moving at very high speed. Once he was gfited with the infinite knowledge of the universe and it didn't kill him, Superman managed to hang on and stay strong long enough for it to pass. Superman has also shown incredible intelligence and computational abilities; his mind works sharply and with extreme speed relative to earth-humans. His analytical powers are impressive — he is able to use his senses to read information directly from machines (and, with careful usage of his heat vision, he can even reprogram machines). Recently after he regained his powers in the "One Year Later" arc, his brain's intelligence has increased and it operates with much greater speed, procession, and analytical prowess, to the point he can recall things in such detail that he knows the ballistics of every shot by Bloodshot and the vector and mass of each and every one of Riot's bodies. He can see into one of the most advanced Kryptonian Sun Stone Battle Ships and watch energy patterns shift and change, trace command signals at light speed down branching, maze-like pathways whilst, at the same time, finding one small knot of circuitry.
  • Telepathy: Rarely used though, Superman could read and talk to people through one's mind.
  • Self-Sustenance: Superman doesn't need to eat and sleep so long as he's under the effects of yellow sun radiation. His body stores the energy necessary to negate eating and sleeping for an indefinite period. Superman doesn't need to eat or sleep as long as he's under the effect of the yellow sun's radiation. His body stores the energy necessary to not eat or sleep for an indefinite period. Nor does he need to cleanse or cleanse himself.

Abilities [ ]

  • Combat Mastery: Born with the incredible powers and having been a superhero throughout his career, Superman has been a formidable hand-to-hand combatant, having taken down these powerful villains he had faced throughout his time, his fighting style is mostly boxing, having delivered his powerful punches either ground or aerial in mid-air, he was trained by both Wildcat (in Boxing), and Mongul in the fighting arts. Superman has fought and learned from Wonder Woman. He has also learned more advanced martial arts techniques from Batman.
  • Indomitable Nature: Superman has shown to have a powerful force of Will, completely free of evil or temptation. Having been raised by a kindly Kansas farmer and his wife, Superman was taught to protect life and help others. He is very optimistic and never gives up, even when things look bad. Superman has an indomitable nature; the property of being difficult, if not impossible, to defeat, subdue or overcome, possessing incredible strength and a personal form of invincibility linked to the physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, etc., that makes him invincible and unsubduable to anyone who is able to exceed his own limits and extend his nature of being, whether as a whole or selectively by nature of being (characteristic, principles, aspects, etc.). Superman's innate indomitability makes him an unstoppable force of nature that binds him to that which makes him what he is, allowing him to live up to all that he is meant to be and all that he can become, regardless of the efforts of others to control him, for he is immune to any form of alteration or control over him in general.
  • Leadership Mastery: Superman innately knows how to be a great leader, enabling him to effectively maintain order and morale. Superman has an intuitive mastery of associated leadership skills, speech and body language, expertly sending out all the right signals, giving him a major advantage in any social situation and enabling him to easily forge a fanatical level of trust and devotion in anyone who exercises these talents. Thanks to this ability, Clark has developed an incredibly charismatic personality, and is able to inspire and win others over to his beliefs. Over time, Superman has won the loyalty and devotion of humans, members of his team and even Batman (who initially saw him as a threat), changing anyone's opinions on anything, getting them to serve and follow him. Thanks to this ability, Superman obtains authority, rises to the top of any social hierarchy and occupies positions of leadership very quickly and easily, and performs feats such as always doing the right thing when it comes to administering, commanding, governing and directing.

Weaknesses [ ]

  • Green : It can weaken Superman both physically and mentally. Short term exposure will leave Superman weakened while long term exposure will kill him. This is also every Kryptonian's weaknesses. However, Superman can resist Green Kryptonite, but it will be hard, due to the fact that it is rare and that it can weaken him strongly.
  • Red : It can have various different effects on a Kryptonian. It can make Superman a completely different person. However, psychologically. It can make his personality have traits of a villain and have thoughts relating to evil stuff. This will also make Superman lose his social conscience and inhibitions. It even once turned his head like an ant's.
  • Blue : It can rob Superman of his powers and make him vulnerable at anything.
  • Black : It can separate Superman from both his Kryptonian and Human side. Other versions can corrupt him to become evil or separate his good and evil halves.
  • Gold : The Pre-Crisis version can give Superman permanent wounds or scars that can't ever be healed and it can also cause him to lose his powers and abilities forever. Post-Crisis, Gold Kryptonite will temporarily negate his powers so long as he is near it but his powers will return when he is away from it.
  • Kryptonians : On the rare occasions where he has battled other Kryptonians, they seem more easily able to harm one another as well. A noticeable observation is that other Kryptonians appear to develop superhuman abilities immediately upon entering a yellow star system, whereas it took Kal-El many years living under a yellow sun for his powers to develop (This may be because he arrived on Earth as a toddler. Had he been an adult or perhaps adolescent his powers would likely have manifested themselves much more readily).
  • Ionizing Radiation Absorbing Materials: Although Superman's X-Ray Vision is at first sight very powerful and impressive, it is unable to penetrate and see through surfaces and walls made of metals and materials reinforced or entirely made of Zinc (only Low-Energy Photons) - Lead - Gold - Osmium - Iridium - Platinum - Rhenium - Tungsten or Uranium.
  • Chi : Lex Luthor and Question argued that, because of Superman's solar-based powers, planetary based esoteric and vital forces could have an opposite effect on him. Luthor posited that concentrated doses of such energies could severely cripple Superman and become fatal, and he attempted to exploit this weakness with the Science Spire, which tapped into Metropolis' Earth energies, or chi, in this case.
  • Red Sun : When exposed to the same red solar radiation as Krypton's red sun Rao, it causes Superman to lose his powers within a large amount of exposure until the exposure to yellow sunlight will reverse this effect.
  • Solar Energy Exhaustion : Though not as common, much like with a Red Sun, as the yellow solar radiation stored within his body acts as fuel for his powers, Superman's powers can grow weaker to the point where he may not be able to use them if he continuously uses his powers without having enough time to replenish the yellow solar energy reserves within his body, especially if he doesn't have any direct contact to yellow sunlight.
  • Magic : Superman's biomatrix is his most powerful asset, but the strength of this field is also its greatest weakness. Its permeability to certain wavelengths makes Superman vulnerable to certain radiations, particularly magical energies whose chaotic electromagnetic or extra-dimensional signatures disrupt this force-field. Superman's vulnerability to magic varies depending upon the special effects of the magic. No magic seems to be able to directly destroy him unless it comes from a semi-divine or divine source. He can be injured and worn down by magical entities. Magic can have powerful and unpredictable effects on Superman and his magical enemies have often proven to be the most dangerous. Recently, Superman has learned more about magic with the help of Zatanna and he is able to counter almost every spell. Magic has unknown effects on him. He was able to survive when he had a magical sword in the chest and a magical arrow in his back. It was during a fight against four Elder Gods. A fight that Superman won. He was able to withstand a magical blast that managed to knockout the entire JLA and both Wonder Woman (magic being) and Zauriel (Angel). He went after the enemy in question and stopped him.
  • Fatal Injuries : While Superman is extremely powerful, fatal injuries can kill Superman-like any other human as he's mortal. Doomsday inflicted fatal injuries on the Man of Steel and he was unable to recover. Other heavy hitters can kill Superman such as Darkseid, Despero, Black Adam, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, Captain Marvel, amongst others.
  • Physical Limitations : Superman is a formidable opponent and one of the most powerful superheroes on the Justice League. However, there are weights he cannot lift and enemies he can't outrun. When facing enemies more powerful than himself, Superman calls the Justice League for help.
  • High Pitched Noises : Because of his super hearing, Superman's ears are extra-sensitive to extreme noises.
  • Phantom Zoners : Phantom Zoners, being aliens, can hurt him to varying extents depending on the alien.
  • Psionics: Another hitch to Superman and other Kryptonian's abilities is his interaction with psychic influences, i.e. mind control, telekinesis, possession and the like. An exceptionally powerful mentalist can manipulate the minds of even the strongest of Kryptonians or Daxamites due to their relatively weak defenses against telepathic intrusion, while at the same time a skilled telekinetic can also bypass their usually high levels of imperiousness by affecting them at a molecular-subatomic level. However, after he was nearly mind-controlled by Maxwell Lord to attack Wonder Woman, he spent some time training with the Martian Manhunter to overcome this weakness, with the result that he was later able to throw off Arion's attempt to take control of him in a similar matter.

  • The aura that Superman's body generates is the same that protects his body from damage, prevents grime and dirt from clinging long to his flesh to keep him perpetually clean. Aura was established only in John Byrne continuity in 1986 The Man of Steel mini-series and it only affected skintight part of the suit (and as long as Superman had enought sun energy to sustain it) so his cape would get teared up fairly quickly during that era (1986 - 2003). Before 1986 Superman was wearing suit made from invulnerable (as long as it was under yello sun, just like anything and anyone from Krypton) Kryptonian materials because otherwise any costume would tear pretty quickly. After 2003 Birthright reboot his costume was once again made from Kryptonian material including cape and could only be damaged after kryptonite exposure, red sun energy or heat vision of a Kryptonian. While aura still presented which enables Superman to move people at any speed without damaging them (as seen in Birthright #1) it is not clear if it still protects clothing from being damaged like before. When Post-Crisis Superman (ie The Man of Steel/Birthright/Secret Origin Superman) somehow ended on new52 Earth (aka Earth-0/Earth-52) his black suit was said to be made from experimental durable polymer to endure the damage to it (it was only cut by magical blade later on), it is not clear how he made his Rebirth suit but in Brian Michael Bendis run it was revealed suit was indeed from Kryptonian materials which Lois would wear to protect herself during space voyage with Jor-El and her son Jon. In the end Superman will return to red trunks suit but with metallic cuffs which will be teared up multiple times, cape and skintight part.
  • Superman is the best selling comic book character with over 600 million copies sold, with Batman coming in second with 460 million and Spider-Man coming in third with 378 million. In the 1950s Fawcett Comics' Captain Marvel was selling better, which is why DC Comics sued them and later on took it's writer Otto Binder as the main writer for Superman during Silver Age (50's-60's) period, along with returned Jerry Siegel.
  • Superman has many connections to the biblical figure, Jesus . They were both born from godlike families, they were both sent to earth with the purpose of being its savior, and they both died and came back to life.
  • His Kryptonian name translates to "Star Child".
  • Superman does not consider his actions as a superhero to be vigilantism, something which he considers beneath him. Iconically, His New 52 counterpart resorts to what could be considered traditional vigilantism after losing his powers for a time.
  • His Silhouette is an icon of Heroes Wiki

Did you know

  • Trivia He was cautious in his interaction with the young children who were fans of Adventures of Superman (1952) because they often tried to test his "invulnerability" by assaulting him. According to urban legend, at one appearance a young boy came up to Reeves, pulled out a pistol and pointed it at him. The boy had taken the weapon, a Luger that his father had brought home from World War II, to see if "Superman" really was invulnerable. Reeves convinced the boy to give him the gun by saying that someone else would get hurt when the bullets bounced off of "Superman". In fact, there is no citable evidence to support this story.

Superman , real name Kal-El/Clark Joseph Kent , is one of the most powerful superheroes in the world of DC Comics .

Background [ ]

Born as Kal-El on the dying planet of Krypton, his parents Jor-El and Lara sent him to planet Earth in a rocket as the last surviving member of his race. His rocket was discovered by a kind couple, Jonathan and Martha Kent, who took him in as their own under the name Clark Kent, and he was raised in the town of Smallville, Kansas. After discovering the truth of his identity, he discovered that he should use his unusual powers to protect this world that he calls home, and developed the persona of Superman... While as Clark Kent, getting a job as a reporter at the Daily Bugle in Metropolis.

Note: This takes info from Superman's extensive mainline comic book canon. We all know Superman and DC Comics as a whole have gone through multiple retcons. So Superman from the Golden Age, Silver Age, Pre-Crisis, Post-Crisis, New 52, Rebirth, Infinite Frontier, and so on. It would help to know which one is the main Superman, right? Well... they all are. See, the latest reboots basically said everything in the main series is kinda canon. Even when he had wacky powers like duplication, shapeshifting, matter manipulation, etc... Look, if you really dig into it, this isn't new. Plenty of characters have recalled events from supposedly retconned timelines before. See. Post-Crisis Superman did start as less powerful than in Pre-Crisis, but that was because of the mental blocks. Though he's not a complete composite; there's so many other Supermen out there. Superman One Million, Cosmic Armor Superman/Thought Robot, Red Son Superman, Dinosaur Superman/Supersaur, Injustice Superman! There's a bunch. Even beyond the "infinite multiverse" continuity, though, most mainline eras of Superman can be directly scaled to each other. Post-Crisis Superman fought Golden Age Superman, who matched Pre-Crisis Superman... you get the idea...

Powers & Abilities [ ]

  • Solar Energy Absorption: As a Kryptonian, his cells function like a super battery, hyper metabolizing specific wavelengths of radiation as fuel to enable living functions and/or superhuman abilities. Different wavelengths of radiation have different effects on Superman's physiology and well being, but his cells cannot absorb or utilize all types of radiation. The wavelength of his home solar system's red sun enables his body to function on an identical level of a healthy human while the Earth's solar radiation in both its raw and filtered state through the Earth's atmosphere acts as fuel to enable all of his powers. Every time Superman uses any of his superhuman abilities, his body expends absorbed sunlight and he is capable utilizing any of them to various degrees through controlled circumstances. The solar-based radiation of a foreign blue star proved to increase his known abilities under a yellow sun to a higher degree and enabled additional powers. The existence and constant exposure to proven "healthy" radiation sources is not required for him to live and utilize his powers, but prolonged periods without exposure to them and/or utilizing his powers will require Kal-El to recharge in order to live and continue using his powers. His emotional state correlates to fluctuations in his solar storage. The more stress he is under, the more energy he retains from the sun.
  • Cosmic Energy Absorption: Kal's solar receptors can also absorb solar energy from cosmic energy, such as when he absorbed energy from Starman, gained from the Totality itself. So much that he felt like he could crack the Earth in half with a footstep if he wasn't careful.
  • Electricity Manipulation:
  • Soul Absorption:
  • Kryptonite Radiation Absorption:
  • Magic Absorption:
  • Shock Wave Projection: Superman is strong enough to create powerful sonic booms with just the clap of his hands. These sonic claps are powerful enough to be heard across states.
  • Infinite Mass Punch: By vibrating his fist at just under the speed of light, Superman can use physics to his advantage by allowing his fist to gain a massive amount of mass, drastically increasing its impact force as he punches with the power of a dwarf star, which is equivalent to 10 octillion megatons of TNT.
  • Lineage Punch/World Forger Punch:
  • Knockout Death Punch:
  • Reality Shattering Punch:
  • Superhuman Agility: Superman's agility, balance, and bodily coordination are enhanced to superhuman levels. This allows him to easily make sharp turns and easily maneuver while flying and moving at superhuman speed.
  • Superhuman Reflexes: Superman possesses reflexes far greater than any normal human being. This allows him to easily react to danger and events, and perceive the world in slow motion. His mind is able to process information at such speeds that he can perceive femtoseconds and attoseconds.
  • Molecular Acceleration: Superman can vibrate his molecular structure at various levels to achieve various effects. If he chooses, Superman can excite the molecules of whatever substance he vibrates through to critical mass causing it to explode. He even casually caught Captain Marvel, Jr just by simply vibrating at hyper sonic speed, thus matching the speed of Mercury. By matching the vibratory frequency, Superman exorcised a phantom planet from reality, thus saving the universe.
  • Invisibility: He can also vibrate so fast that light does not reflect off him, rendering him invisible.
  • Afterimages:
  • Phasing: Superman possesses the ability to control his speed and angular momentum at the molecular level, and control his molecular interactions to allow his body to pass through any substance.
  • Vortex Creations: Superman can use his speed to manipulate airflow for various purposes. He was able to use his flight speed to funnel a toxic chemical out of the atmosphere and into space.
  • Dimensional Travel:
  • Superman can temporarily halt the beating of his heart.
  • Super-Friction:
  • Godly Stamina: Superman is able to maintain continuous strenuous physical action for an indefinite period of time. This based on his body converting yellow solar radiation directly to energy, but is limited by physiological and psychological needs to eat, drink and sleep.
  • Super-Hearing: Superman has the ability to expand his hearing range, giving him the ability to hear sounds before the sound waves actually reaches him. This also gives him incredible hearing at extreme variances of sound and pitch frequency, allowing him to pick up noises from across the globe. He has shown enough control to block out ambient sounds to focus on a specific source/frequency.
  • Super Smell/Superhuman Olfaction: On various occasions, Superman has demonstrated that his sense of smell is significantly enhanced to the point he can smell odors across the entire planet.
  • X-Ray Vision: By focusing his vision, Superman can see through any volume of matter, except lead. He can see things behind a solid, opaque object as if it were not there and can focus this ability to "peel back" layers of an object, allowing hidden image or inner workings to be observed. Superman's enemies have attempted to use lead to hide things from his vision, mistakenly believing that anything with that material is somehow invisible to him. On the contrary, lead's opaqueness to his X-ray vision makes the material easy to spot with a wide-angle scan and allows Superman to narrow his search to those opaque objects. He can even use intensify his X-Ray vision to the extent that he could use it at a Gamma level to short out a Space Station's electrical engine.
  • Telescopic Vision: This is the ability to see something at a great distance, without violating the laws of physics. Though limited, the exact extent of the ability is undetermined. In function, it is similar to the zoom lens on a camera.
  • Microscopic Vision: This is the ability to see extremely small objects and images down to the atomic level.
  • Infrared Vision: Superman can see with better acuity in darkness, and to a degree in total darkness.
  • Thermal Vision: The ability of see through the heat tracks left by a living being or object.
  • Electromagnetic Spectrum Vision: Superman can see well into most of the electromagnetic spectrum. He can see and identify radio and television signals as well as all other broadcast or transmitted frequencies. Using this ability, he can avoid detection by radar or satellite monitoring methods. This also allows him to see the aura generated by living things.
  • Theta Vision/Aura Vision:
  • Soul Vision:
  • Fourth Dimensional Vision:
  • Enhanced Sense of Touch: Kal-L could "read" the content of wire recordings with his fingers.
  • Accelerated Healing: After getting shot with a Kryptonite bullet by Metallo the wound was still closing up even though the bullet was slowing down his cellular restoration. He quickly healed after Wonder Woman cut his throat with her tiara.
  • Flight: Superman is capable of flying at supersonic speeds (over 2,000 miles per second) in a planetary atmosphere and at faster-than-light speeds while in space. He once traveled from the Vega star to Earth - a distance of over 25 light years - in minutes if not seconds, meaning he is capable of flying over one million times the speed of light.
  • Solar Flare/Super Flare: Superman's last resort power that he'd discovered through his heat vision, was the ability to immediately expel all of his stored solar energy in one gigantic burst of explosive force. This Solar Flare uses all the stored energy within his cells at once, allowing for an all out AoE attack. He cannot use it more than once or twice however, as it drains him of all his powers until he can recharge his cells with solar energy. Give or take 24 hours, in that expanse of time, he is rendered virtually human and vulnerable. Luckily for Superman, thanks to the training he received from the Justice League, he learned to keep his flares smaller and more contained, so that it doesn't take as long for his powers to come back.
  • Interstellar Travel: Superman is immune to the nature of space and is not inhibited by its lack of gravity. He can travel the reaches of space where no human body could possibly survive without the aid of technology or protection.
  • Enhanced Immunity:
  • Solar Shield: The solar energy Superman stores also extends from his body, protecting him from all but the strongest blows.
  • Longevity: Superman can potentially live indefinitely with little to no aging to his being, so long as he continuously retains enough yellow solar radiation in his body.
  • Freeze Breath: He can chill the air as it leaves his lungs to freeze targets. He can also reverse the process to pull large volumes of air or vapor into his lungs.
  • Fire Breath:
  • Super Sneeze:
  • Super Scream:
  • Radar-Sensing Capabilities: Superman, as of Action Comics #49, has the ability to sense transmissions, energy waves, and signals spanning all across the globe; giving him the ability of also being a "super antenna".
  • Self-Sustenance: He does not need to eat or sleep so long he has enough yellow solar energy (but is still capable of doing so), and doesn't require oxygen to breathe enabling him to travel in space and underwater unprotected.
  • Super Teeth:
  • Blood Weapon/Fortified Blood:
  • Super-Disguise: In several stories set in and before 1942, Superman had the ability to disguise himself by twisting his plastic features into new facial arrangements. This also occurs in his battle against the Collectors.
  • Sound Manipulation: Superman can emit a supersonic whistle so high in pitch that humans can't hear it, but strong enough to destroy a tower. He also can project his voice over Metropolis and everyone there can hear him.
  • Hypnosis: Kal-L can control the thoughts of others with great concentration.
  • Superman can stop his breathing and heartbeat, faking death. However, Superman can only sustain this effect for a limited time before his body gives out.
  • Telekinetic Rays:
  • Rainbow Rays:
  • Artificial Lightning/Super-Force Lightning:
  • Air Manipulation:
  • Image Duplication: Superman can duplicate images of himself, where one is like a ghost, one is like a hologram, and one is like a glass statue that shatters when hit.
  • Tiny Clones:
  • Telepathy/Mind Reading: As a Kryptonian, Superman is able to communicate telepathically.
  • Shapeshifting:
  • Memory Manipulation: Superman has the ability to erase memories. He used this ability on Lois Lane when he kissed her to make her forget that she had a relationship with him, and his secret identity.
  • Matter Manipulation:
  • Super-Sentries:
  • Mind Control:
  • Artificial Object Aging:
  • Super-Ventriloquism: He could project his voice without visibly moving his mouth or lips across large distances. He can project his voice through someone's body and threw radio signals.
  • Molecular Reconstruction: Superman was able to rebuild the broken bricks of the Great Wall of China with rays from his eyes.
  • Super-Mathematics:
  • Super-Weaving:
  • Super-Dancing:
  • Super-Eating: Can eat more burgers that are enough for an army!
  • ¨Super-Caller-ID¨/Telepathic Powers: He knows who's calling him with his telepathic powers, AKA, ¨Super-Caller-ID¨!
  • Super Plastic Wrap: SUPERMAN CAN THROW A PLASTIC WRAP S THAT CAN WRAP SOMEONE UP TEMPORARILY. This is akin to black magic. Where does this come from? Why doesn't this get used on low level criminals?
  • Super Aura Avatar/Orphan Box Avatar/Genesis Energy Avatar:
  • Mechanokinesis: Superman was able to freeze Lex Luthor's Warsuit with a thought and cause it to break apart with a touch through his bio-electric aura.
  • Teleportation: Superman is able to instantaneously travel across interstellar distances. When teleported away by Lex Luthor, Superman was able to quickly travel back to Lex though a rift in space.
  • Chi Manipulation: Superman learned the art of Bagua under the instruction of I-Ching. He learned how to manipulate his Chi or Qi to help him gain a better control over his powers. Superman recommended to Supergirl that she should go train with I-Ching herself. Just so that she could regain proper control over her powers, after her fight with the Fatal Five. When going over his lost memories after the merging of the essences of both his Pre-Flashpoint and Post-Flashpoint selves, he remembered Super-Man that happened in his past, as a reference to his training.
  • Space-Time Manipulation:
  • Reality Manipulation:
  • Total Recall: Superman had total and perfect recollection of all the events that transpired in his life since his birth on Krypton, being able to recall even trivial and minute details or information from decades ago with impeccable accuracy. He could learn surgery in minutes by reading the appropriate books, and re-build an exploded computer by recalling where each component was. This power was facilitated by augmentation of his already formidable intellectual capabilities by the Sun's rays.
  • Stick Fighting:
  • Swordsmanship: Considering Superman's reputation in hand-to-hand combat and his use of his powers. Superman is actually quite the skilled swordsman, capable of fighting on par with the Space Pirate Captain Freelance in a duel. Fighting alongside a magic based Justice League from a parallel future and even fighting Doomsday for a period of time. He fought on par with Hon-Ur when he briefly clashed blades with him, when he was powerless. He even slayed a Troll while protecting Jimmy Olsen, when he realized it wasn't even alive due to it not breathing and having no pulse. He overcame a copy of himself in a sword duel, when traversing the Fortress of Solitude without his powers.
  • Paralysis Inducement:
  • Kryptonian "Theta State":
  • Illusion Projection:
  • Mind Manipulation & Protection:
  • Astral Projection:
  • Energy Purification:
  • Increased Combat Instincts:
  • Horu-Kanu: The deadliest form of physical combat on Krypton. A martial art that involves taking advantage the body's pressure points. Superman learned this martial art in private and used it when fighting Batman who was filled with Green Kryptonite energy, Maxima, Tempest, Mongul II and Ultraman.
  • Marksmanship:
  • Intimidation:
  • Eidetic Memory: After his powers returned his memory became phenomenal. Clark's memory is so grand that he managed to memorize every nut, bolt and circuit of the Miracle Machine, after Brainiac 5 showed it to him no more than a few seconds.
  • Mental Resistance: After an attack by the Key involving telepathy, mind control and illusions. Batman suggested that the League should they should train with Martian Manhunter to combat this vulnerability, for future attacks. Thus Superman built up his mental defenses with the aid of Martian Manhunter, to make his mind more resistant against such threats. Which became useful when Clark fought against Arion's mind control spell; battling to reclaim his mind while utilizing the resistance techniques, that J'onn taught him.
  • Investigation: Both as a superhero and as a journalist, Superman is an expert at gathering evidence from all kinds of sources. Even Batman has given Superman props for his deductive reasoning skills. Green Arrow also refers to both him and Batman as the Hardy Boys. Clark even managed to solve how Massacre was capable of predicting his opponent's moves, by discovering that he can sense nerve signals, over the course of their battle. Kal reveals he was taught how to learn of his opponent's weaknesses and use it against them. Utilizing that skill, to identify and adapting to foes, that are able of getting stronger and smarter over the course of a battle. While striped of his powers, he has shown deducing the Key's identity via his voice and speech pattern, along with knowing he was still in the Fortress of Solitude, just by listening to the Key's prerecorded message.
  • Meditation: During his 20s, Superman traveled around to see the world and learn more about his powers. After first meeting with his "then" lover Terri Chung, they traveled to Bhutran. There, Superman learned of their customs and the secrets they had to offer, which involved meditation and yoga techniques; taught to him by Terri's father the former Rhana Bhutra. Superman even learned some mediation techniques that allows him to slow his heart rate down to mimic death and one to slow his metabolism down to allow him into a meditative state; all of which he learned while studying in Bhutran and from Batman. His training in Bhutran was most effective when his powers went out of control, due to excessive amounts of energy coursing through his body, at the time.He even resorted to meditation when creating the world of Metropia. His meditation practice was definitely useful when he first used Torquasm Vo to enter the Theta State, when fighting against Dominus.
  • Journalism: Clark is one of the best reporters on the Daily Planet , rivaled only by his wife Lois Lane. He gained a Pulitzer Prize at least in one occasion.
  • Leadership: Superman has proven many times over his ability to command respect and inspire others with his charisma, ardor and idealism. He often serves as the primus inter pares of the Justice League.
  • Multilingualism: Superman speaks Mandarin Chinese.
  • Fourth Wall Breaking:

Equipment [ ]

  • Indestructible Cape:
  • Sword of Superman:
  • Supergun/The Expunger:
  • Unchained Armor:
  • Anti-Kryptonite Suit/K-Suit/Lead Armor: Superman occasionally used an airight full-body armor suit made of lead to block lethal Green Kryptonite radiations from reaching his body. Although the armor had no eyeholes as such, Superman could navigate with the suit on by using a viewscreen built into the interior of the helmet. The suit was frequently destroyed or transmuted into glass by Superman's enemies, presumably being replaced each time.
  • Kryptonian Biotech Suit:
  • Kryptonian Lenses: Clark Kent can use glasses with lenses from his Kryptonian spaceship to project his heat vision without melting them.
  • Supermobile: Usually just flies under his own power, but occasionally made use of a Supermobile to compensate for temporary loss of powers or for protection against non-yellow sun-systems in which Superman would often lose his powers or find them diminished.
  • Rocket-Belt: During his time in Kandor as Nightwing, Kal-El used a rocket belt to give him the ability to fly as he would be able to under Earth's yellow sun.
  • Superman Robots: Android facsimiles of the Man of Steel imbued with inferior duplicates of Superman's main power set and used to stand in for him on occasions when it is necessary that Superman and Clark Kent be seen together in order to deflect suspicion or to defend Metropolis when their creator is unable to for a variety of reasons. Special Superman Robots have even been created to pose as Clark Kent in his civilian identity. Pollution eventually made it unsafe for them to use their superpowers.
  • Super-Computer: Superman's highly advanced supercomputer, located in the Fortress of Solitude.
  • Legion Flight Ring and Time Bubble: As a former or reserved member of the Legion of Super-Heroes Superman keeps a Legion Flight Ring (though he does not use it unless he cannot use his powers) and Time Bubble, the ring either cloaked on his hand, or like the Bubble, kept in the Fortress of Solitude.
  • Archer Rifle: As Commander El of the New Kryptonian Military Guild and leading Commander of the Red Shard faction, Superman kept a standard issue Archer rifle, though he only uses to disarm or hurt, never to kill.
  • Shrink Ray:
  • Gravity Gun:
  • Phantom Zone Projector:
  • The Miracle Machine:
  • Various technological artifacts from Krypton and other alien world Superman has visited in the past, usually contained within the Fortress of Solitude...

Alternate Forms [ ]

Electrical superman [ ].

  • Energy Form: Superman loses his traditional powers and transforms into a being of electromagnetic energy. In order to maintain physical cohesion in this form, he needs to wear a containment suit.
  • Lightning Bolt Travel: ability to travel as a bolt of lightning landing with a jolt when ever he landed.
  • Density Shifting: In this form, he can become intangible allowing him to phase through solid objects or down to the point where he is a normal human, but in this state he possessed no powers and was no more powerful that the average human male.
  • Electromagnetic Spectrum Manipulation: allows him the ability to influence all forms of energy allowing him to control magnetism, gravitational forces, radiation and electricity.
  • Electromagnetic Spectrum Sight: see in vastly expanded and different radiation spectra frequencies of energy.
  • Electricity Absorption: draw power from electrical sources.
  • Electrical Blasts
  • Solid Field: ability to produce a solid field that allowed him to physically interact with objects, he was also able to control the shape and size of his field.
  • Technopathy: ability to link with electronic systems such as computers
  • Electronic Teleportation: travel through systems much like electric current.

Sun Dipped Superman [ ]

This is Superman's power-up form, with it his powers are beyond the chart. Because of this form, his stats are powerful. His strength in this form allows him to lift 200 quintillion tons with one arm, casually tank supernovas like nothing and with it, telepathic powers barely work on him.

Strength [ ]

  • (Golden Age) Matched his Pre-Crisis self.
  • (Silver Age) Can crush coal into a perfectly cut diamond.
  • (Pre-Crisis) Pushed himself toward the center of the big bang and destroyed a structure that was withstanding it.
  • (Post-Flashpoint) Bench pressed 5.962 sextillion metric tons (the weight of the Earth) for 5 days straight without exposure to sunlight.
  • (Post-Flashpoint) The only method to truly test his upper strength would be through tapping into a pandimensional wormhole whose energies could swallow the Earth whole.
  • (Post-Flashpoint) Shattered chains of Kerenthium steel, which is the strongest metal in the universe, forged in inverted black holes; such steel is used to haul stars across galaxies.
  • (Pre-Crisis) In an alternate future, drilled the Earth in half.
  • (Post-Crisis) With help from Wonder Woman and Martian Manhunter, pulled the Earth.
  • (Post-Crisis) Stopped an asteroid that had a relative load of a 5 thousand megaton bomb.

  • (Post-Crisis) Used his heat vision to help Waverider, Captain Atom, Ray, Darkstar contribute to the energy of a Big Bang during the events of Zero Hour to restart the universe (56.77 nonillion light-years (31 zeroes)/ 1/5 of that power to Supes).
  • (Pre-Crisis) Pushes against the Big Bang, as well as destroying an object unaffected by its explosion.
  • (Post-Crisis) Was able to overpower the concept of his own death, which destroyed the entire universe via entropy.
  • (Post-Crisis) Was able to contend with Silver-Age Mordru, who had all the magical power of an entire universe.

  • (Pre-Crisis)  Was scientifically tested to have a voice which could reach over 1 million decibels (3.539899904 times Universal).
  • (potentially hyperbole, see before the verdicts for the above three feats).

  • (Post-Flashpoint) While split in half, fought the 5th dimensional demon Vyndktvx in a conceptual battle happening across past, present, and future, in all the different worlds there are, all at the same time, in order to save the entirety of creation.
  • This void exists as the pinnacle of existence in DC, the end-point of the infinite hierarchy of dreams, where all individuality stops existing whatsoever.
  • The Miracle Machine calculates the life equation, which is the opposite of the anti-life equation, and one half of the dyad which immediately emanated from the monad which is the Source.
  • The Book of Limbo contains every possible book and ‘only has one story’, with all the other ones in it. It was written by a Monkey within Limbo, who, due to having infinite time, was able to write anything and everything that could be possibly written on a typewriter. It is said that the Monkey will eventually write everyone out of Limbo, even though Limbo is the set of all possible characters that have not been told in a story yet. This is a reference to the Infinite monkey theorem, which states that eventually a monkey given infinite time will go through all possible permutations of English character strings and write down a famous work of art, such as Shakespeare. These writings in DC are self-referential and contain the realities that are described by the stories Rox Ogama is contained within the book itself.
  • The Phantom Zone is a dimensionless structure in the Godsphere, and exists as an equivalent to Comic Book Limbo, which contains the set of all characters not yet written.
  • (Post-Flashpoint) Was considered by Dr. Manhattan as legitimately being able to kill him with one punch, as it was impossible for him to ascertain whether or not in his future vision Superman killed him with a singular hit, or he just destroyed the entire multiverse.
  • (Post-Crisis) Could mend Boomtubes and destroy a cube that was made out of the same material Boomtubes are composed of, even as Boomtubes are stable enough to increase beings to sizes which infinitely surpass the mortal multiverse.
  • (Post-Crisis) Was able to generate energy with his vocal cords which could shatter the true form of Darkseid’s godhead.
  • (Post-Flashpoint) After momentarily sundipping, was able to one-shot the World Forger and destroy his replacement multiverse.
  • (Pre-Crisis) Is fast enough to reach the edge of the universe in seconds when he helped restore the shrunken cosmos. After it returned to normal, he flew the total distance back to Earth from its actual size.
  • (Post-Crisis) Could escape the Source, despite the fact that it specifically lacked any direction and is above spatial dimensionality in general (and therefore concepts of space and time) (Immeasurable).
  • (Post-Crisis) Was able to escape the primal void beyond space and time, the foundation of all universes and dreams, despite being dumped there by Neron (Immeasurable).
  • (Pre-Crisis) Could tear through the very fabric of space and rip through toward the future, through the worst of all possible futures that might bewilder humanity, until finally reaching the year 2975 (Immeasurable).
  • (Post-Crisis) Has on a few occasions sped up his reaction speed in order to not be affected by time dilation.
  • (Pre-Crisis) As a teenager, was able to consistently break the time-barrier on a whim, and travel into the past (Immeasurable).
  • (Pre-Crisis) Traveled through time through sheer speed to reach the year 1971 to give people milk (lmao) (Immeasurable).
  • (Post-Flashpoint) Could fly into and enter the 5th dimension proper in order to troll Mxyzptlk (Immeasurable).
  • (Post-Crisis) Could react to Wally and Barry running faster than they ever had before, entering a state of pure information while outpacing the Black Racer, the conceptual embodiment of death, through the 4th dimension (Immeasurable).
  • (Post-Crisis) Can react to and destroy reality blitzing missiles which were traveling from conceptual Monitor nanotechnology into the multiverse before Lois’ heart could beat once (Immeasurable).
  • (Post-Flashpoint) Can react in an attosecond.
  • (Post-Flashpoint) According to Batman, can halve distances in Planck time.
  • (Post-Flashpoint) Was able to process the entirety of all data in the universe in at least the greater part of a day, in an attempt to calculate the location of a zetabeam, which exists everywhere at once (6.1 Quattuortrigintillion c).
  • (Post-Crisis) Has flown from Apokolips to Earth without a Boomtube.
  • (Post-Crisis) Has experienced an infinite amount of universes simultaneously while fighting Dominus (Immeasurable).
  • (Post-Crisis) Could exist in an ‘eternal now’ where all moments existed simultaneously, allowing him to move across a quantum sea to push through the boundaries of space, memory, and emotion, bringing him to the ‘final barrier’ that could not be passed, the concept of death itself (Immeasurable).
  • (Pre-Crisis) Traveled into the future by flying “swifter than time itself”, breaking through the barriers of time and space (Immeasurable).
  • (Pre-Crisis) Flew so fast he broke time and space in pursuit of Supergirl, traveling out of the universe and beyond “the very bounds of infinity,” eventually flying into the Spectre after he had been dispatched by the Presence to stop him from bypassing the veil into the afterlife (Immeasurable).
  • (Post-Flashpoint) Can escape a prison of weaponized Hypertime, which is the temporal equivalent of the “omniverse” (Immeasurable).
  • (Post-Flashpoint) In moments, Superman can cross distances that cease to be distances (Immeasurable).
  • Keep in mind even early in his career as a member of The Flash family, Wally West could reach speed IMPOSSIBLE TO CALCULATE!!!

  • (Post-Flashpoint) A heavily weakened Superman shrugged the energy off from Umbrax the living Galaxy.
  • (Post-Crisis) Was only knocked out by an infinite mass punch’s recoil (which destroyed a constantly accelerating object the size of a moon).
  • (Golden Age) SURVIVED THE ANTI-MONITOR BLASTING HIM WITH ALL THE ENERGY OF THE ANTI-MATTER UNIVERSE!!!
  • (Post-Crisis) Survived the whole universe collapsing in on him during the heat death (539 Novendecicentillion times Universal).
  • (Post-Crisis) Tanked attacks from Blackstar, a being who had power over the energy of the cosmos.
  • (Post-Crisis) Survived Aztek’s 4th-dimensional sacrifice play.
  • (Post-Crisis) Upon sundipping, was stated to be able to survive Brainiac 13’s new power and eventually kill him, with Brainiac 13’s plan upon the absorption of the Imperiex being the total cyber-conversion of the universe in hours.
  • (Post-Crisis) Was stated by WoG to have been able to survive and eventually defeat Imperiex (who contains an entire Big Bang) on his own if he had taken down his mental inhibitions during Our Worlds at War.
  • (Post-Crisis) Took hits from the Entropy Aegis, which has the power to remake the entire universe.
  • (Pre-Crisis) Survived hits from Jaxon, whose energies (alongside Superman’s own) regenerated an infinite amount of timelines.
  • (Pre-Crisis) Tanked infinite barriers of reality being destroyed by tissue paper as he was traveling faster than infinity.
  • (Post-Crisis) Tanked shattering into infinite realities spawned by Neron and fragmenting them (confirmed to be actual universes alongside simultaneous mental experiences by WoG).
  • (Post-Flashpoint) The Anti-Life Equation combined with various isotopes of Kryptonite from the Dark Multiverse was unable to kill Superman, and was simply used for torture by a Dark Multiverse version of Batman fused with the Omega Effect.
  • (Post-Flashpoint) A heavily weakened Superman was able to survive a blast from the Anti-Monitor.
  • KEEP IN MIND DARKSEID’S OMEGA BEAMS ON THEIR OWN CAN ERASE YOU FROM EXISTENCE, MEANING SUPERMAN CAN RESIST BEING ERASED FROM EXISTENCE!!!
  • (Post-Crisis) Withstood the resulting energy from the the Source Wall exploding.
  • (Post-Crisis) Tanked blasts from Gog’s staff, which contained the emerald energy of the guardians of the universe, the cosmic power of the source, and the magical night of Zeus and Shazam combined.
  • (Post-Flashpoint) Was able to survive and overpower Mxyzptlk’s 5th dimensional magic attempting to obliterate him.
  • (Post-Flashpoint) Survived being hit with the entirety of magic in the multiverse, the entirety of the Speed Force, and the entirety of the Emotional Spectrum merged within a singular person, and was able to subsequently match this person’s attacks with his heat vision, though he did note that he couldn’t sustain for long due to the magic present.
  • (Post-Crisis) Survived a blast by Gog which breached the walls of Hypertime.
  • (Post-Crisis) Survived a mystical explosion which killed Lady Blaze herself.
  • (Post-Crisis) Survived as the last character in the DCU after Mandrakk the Dark Monitor sucked every other narrative dry, essentially being the only character left after the entire omniverse was erased during the events of Final Crisis.
  • (Post-Crisis) Survived being in the primal void after being sent there by Neron, despite the fact that this exists beyond creation and reduces individuality into nothingness, the reduction into the emptiness that exists before form and thought.
  • (Post-Flashpoint) Could not be destroyed by Vyndktvx’s 5th dimensional magic, despite being attacked simultaneously during all time-periods at once, as well as being exposed to red sunlight and kryptonite (and being put up against a copy of Superman Vyndktvx was incarnate in, the thought of a Superman better than Superman, a thought that gets more powerful the more you think about it).
  • (Post-Flashpoint) Was able to facilitate the unification of gravity with electro-magnetism through running an electric scalar field in his body which extended to the 5th dimension, destroying a 5th dimensional super-weapon.
  • The Pax Dei represents the Heavenly Host of God, the army of the Presence; such an army was the military force which ultimately cast down Lucifer Morningstar from Heaven.
  • (Post-Crisis) Survived being in the Source itself, with the Source being the ultimate energy source which created the entirety of DC comics. There exists no direction in it whatsoever, and no living beings could ever exist in it (until Superman, of course).
  • Defeated Lex Luthor, Bizarro, Brainiac, General Zod, Lobo, Arion, Ultraman, Superboy Prime, Doomsday, The Keeper, Anti-Monitor, Darkseid, Mxyzptlk, Vyndktvx, Time Trapper, Mordru, Orion, Captain Marvel, Parasite, Cyborg Superman, Manchester Black, Atomic Skull, Silver Banshee, Solomon Grundy, Mongul, Toyman, Livewire, Ultra-Humanite, Kalibak, Imperiex, Lady Blaze, Titano, Maxima, Jaxon the Mighty, The Prankster, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Black Adam, Metallo, Green Lantern, Chemo, Etrigan, the Galactic Golem, Rogol Zaar, other Supermen, and of course, even the wretched dictators of the 20th century. He has even defeated the concept of his own death, try that one on for size.
  • Founding member of the Justice League of the America in some continuities, member of the Justice Society, the Legion of Superheroes, the All-Star Squadron, Justice League International, the Authority, and many others.
  • Saved the planet, the universe, and the multiverse on countless occasions.
  • Exists as the center of the DC universe.
  • Is the primary reason for humanity reaching the heights of Krypton in the future (e.g. the Legion of Superheroes) instead of going extinct as many species do around the universe.
  • With his arrival in some continuities, heralded the beginning of the “fifth world”, the age of men as gods.
  • Fought against the KKK and racial discrimination.
  • Friends with Quicky and Bugs Bunny.
  • Has met the Avengers and gained their respect.
  • A good friend, a good teammate, and a good father.
  • Inspired several other people to become heroes in the DC universe.
  • Saved people from ending their own lives on numerous occasions.
  • Helped Santa Claus save Christmas.

Weaknesses [ ]

  • Green Kryptonite: The most common form of Kryptonite is Green Kryptonite, and its effect is directly poisonous to him. Kryptonite from other realities do not necessarily have the same effects on all Kryptonians.
  • Red Kryptonite: Red Kryptonite, on the other hand, emitted radiation that would mutate Superman in unpredictable ways for a time span of 48 hours. No two samples of Red K would have the same effect on Superman, while any given Red K chunk could only affect Superman or any other Kryptonian once through exposure.
  • Gold Kryptonite: Gold Kryptonite emitted radiations that would permanently destroy Superman's powers without causing him direct physical harm; he would became equivalent to a normal human man of his age and build from so on.
  • While other varieties of Kryptonite, typically synthetic, existed, these three main varieties were the most commonly found in nature and impacted Superman each in their own unique, detrimental way.
  • Vulnerability to Magic: Superman's biomatrix is his most powerful asset, but the strength of this field is also its greatest weakness. Its permeability to certain wavelengths makes him vulnerable to certain radiations, particularly magical energies whose chaotic electromagnetic or extra dimensional signatures disrupt this force field. Superman's vulnerability to magic varies depending upon the special effects of the magic. He can be injured and worn down by magical entities. Magic can have powerful and unpredictable effects on Superman and his magical enemies have often proven to be the most dangerous.
  • Solar Energy Dependency: Kryptonian abilities will eventually weaken without replenishing their energy reserves with normal (yellow) sun radiation. When exposed to the same red solar radiation as Krypton's red sun Rao, it causes Kryptonians to lose their powers within a large amount of exposure until exposure to yellow sunlight reverses this effect. When exposed to orange solar radiation from a different galaxy, Superman's strength and abilities will drastically diminished, eventually weakening him. The radiation also affects his intellectual capacity and reduces his ability to think.
  • Vulnerability to Red Sun Radiation: When exposed to the frequency range of electromagnetic radiation emitted by a red sun, whether naturally or artificially generated, Superman lost all his superpowers and became, for all intents and purposes, equivalent to a normal human man of his age and build. Even on worlds that exist under yellow suns, the projection of red sun radiation at close range could render him imminently powerless. However, unlike Green K, red sun radiation does not harm Superman directly, and unlike Gold K, its effect is not permanent.
  • Vulnerability to Green Sun Radiation: Similarly to Red Sun, Kal-El will temporarily lose all superpowers in the presence of green sun radiation.
  • Vulnerability to Psionics: Superman could be totally incapacitated by a psychic intrusion if the source of the intrusion were capable of subverting his mental defenses quickly enough. Potentially, a talented psychic could render Superman unconscious or place him under mind-control if Superman were not given the opportunity to respond.
  • Sensory Overload: With his extremely acute senses, Superman can be overtaxed to the point of pain when encountered by extreme external stimuli such as hypersonics (hearing), balance, sight (flash bang).
  • Power Limitation: Superman's sickness has caused his powers to fade and weaken. Although still significantly stronger than a human he is less powerful than an average healthy Kryptonian.
  • The Black Tide: If Superman's chi flow is disrupted by being overwhelmed by this disturbed substance, he'll suffer from fatigue and pain; until he sub comes to unconsciousness. Eventually he will die, unless acupuncture is administered in time.
  • Lead: Superman cannot see through lead with his X-ray vision powers.
  • High-Pitched Noises: Because of his super hearing, Superman's ears are extra-sensitive to extreme noises. This gives individuals like Black Canary and Silver Banshee who use sonic screeches, a particular advantage in combat against him.
  • Vulnerability to Q-Energy: Q-Energy had a similar effect on Superman as Green Kryptonite and could potentially destroy him.
  • Although Superman can survive with no food, water, oxygen or sleep, it's been stated a lack of rest and dream taxes a Kryptonian's mind, to the point Superman becomes prickly, irritable and psychologically unstable. On one occasion, the mental stress from prolonged lack of sleep made Superman manifest a split personality that tried to kill his Clark Kent identity with deathtraps.
  • It is possible that Atron-Rays , which affected the renegade Kryptonian Klax-Ar might strip the powers of Superman or any other Kryptonian, if the exposure is prolonged.
  • A special type of rare metal ore had the ability to siphon Superman's ecto-energy, weakening Superman's powers and potentially creating super-powerful monsters from the ectoplasm. Another metal ore, buried deep into the Earth's mantle, had the ability to leech the solar radiation from Superman's tissue, leaving him in a perpetual state of lethargy until it was neutralized.
  • As a rule, any substance native to Krypton from before its destruction had the potential to affect Superman (or any other Kryptonian) in the same manner that an analogous substance made of Earth elements might do to a normal human.
  • Was once in a porno with Big Barda
  • Superman was at one point in his life a vegetarian.
  • Superman admitted that the only being he is afraid of is Doomsday .
  • Clark's favorite movie is To Kill A Mocking bird.
  • Henry Cavill vacated his role as Superman in the DC Extended Universe because Warner Bros. has put all Superman films on hold since 2017's Justice League (which was a box office failure) and he wasn't working on any new projects. He did say he is willing to return to playing Superman if Warner Bros. commences further films of the character; he was eventually confirmed to reprise his role in a proper sequel to Man of Steel .
  • Superman has many connections to the biblical figure, Jesus. They were both born from godlike families, they were both sent to earth with the purpose of being its savior, and they both died and came back to life.
  • One episode of Justice League Action has Superman indirectly denounce his duel against Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice .
  • Stalin literally translates to 'Man of Steel'. Superman once arrested Stalin and Hitler for the 1939 Invasion of Poland. In Superman: Red Son , Stalin and his government raises Superman, who becomes Stalin's political successor after his death.
  • He had sex with  Talia al Ghul  before Batman.
  • Superman owns a small army of robotic clones, which function primarily as his butlers and can sometimes assist in his fights. These robots are still nowhere near as powerful as Superman himself.
  • It is rumored that George Reeves was almost killed because of his portrayal of Superman. George was dressed as Superman and addressing some children fans. One of the kids pulled out a pistol and wanted to confirm if Superman was really bulletproof. George convinced the kid to drop the gun; claiming that 'if the bullet was to ricochet off Superman's chest, then it might harm someone else.'
  • Superman invented the concept of a modern superhero flying naturally without wings. However as iconic as this trope is, it was not created from the comics. Superman traditionally jumped from place to place, akin to the Hulk as both have powerful leg muscles. But when the Fleischer Cartoons appeared in the 1940s the animators decided to also give Superman true flight to make animating Superman much easier. This aesthetic is so common today that some of Superman's rivals share this trait ( Shazam ,  Thor Odinson , the Sentry ,  Goku ).
  • Superman was heavily inspired by 1800s strongmen; which is where his suit's design is based on. The idea that Superman wears 'underpants on the outside' is actually in reference to these strongmen; as their leotards were almost fully transparent and so they needed an extra layer of clothing to cover their visible crotch.
  • Superman's shield on his chest was inspired by a sheriff star: to show that he was a force for good.
  • Superman's powers were originally only superhuman strength, speed, durability, senses and intelligence: basically enhancements of what people can do. His super-vision eventually included X-Ray vision. Heat vision was introduced as a variation of his X-Ray vision; with the radiation being so intense that it could melt objects. This was retconned to be Superman simply expelling his solar energy from his eyes.
  • In 1980 (4 years before Dragon Ball) Akira Toriyama wrote the 37th chapter of his manga Dr. Slump. In it was a joke-character named Sourman or Suppaman; a fat drawf who is a clear parody of Superman.
  • Superman has had a poor reputation as a video game character, with Superman 64 being considered one of the worst games in gaming history. Multiple game creators claim that depicting Superman is very difficult without nerfing him significantly. The Superman Returns video game adaptation gave the city of Metropolis hitpoints since Superman's nigh indestructibility made it unlikely for him to die in-game. And while Injustice: Gods Among Us was a stellar addition to the fighting game genre with its gameplay and story, Superman was introduced as the main antagonist of the story.
  • 1 Twilight Sparkle
  • 2 Fluttershy
  • 3 The God Emperor of Mankind

Development

In early December 2022, DC Studios co-CEO and chairman James Gunn asserted on social media that the character Superman was "a big priority, if not the biggest priority" for DC Studios under the leadership of himself and Peter Safran . [21] Later that month, Gunn officially announced that he was actively developing a new Superman film that would be a part of the rebooted DC shared universe slate he was co-developing with producer Peter Safran , who shares the position of CEO and chairman at DC Studios with Gunn himself. Gunn described the film as focusing on a younger iteration of the character dissociated from the version portrayed by actor Henry Cavill in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) franchise, which was by that point slated to be reprised in a previously planned sequel to the DCEU film Man of Steel (2013) that was reported to have resumed development just prior to Gunn and Safran assuming their posts at the studio.

Later that day, Variety confirmed that the film would depict Kent as an "inexperienced cub reporter" at the Daily Planet in Metropolis and that Lois Lane would appear as his colleague. [6]

On January 31, 2023, James Gunn announced that the title of the film would be Superman: Legacy and that it would be released on July 11, 2025. On March 15, 2023, Gunn confirmed that he will be directing the film. [1] On April 18, 2023, Gunn announced that pre-production of the film has officially begun. [22] Along with that he also confirms Jimmy Olsen would appear in the film. [13] On May 7, 2023, Gunn revealed that the film would feature Krypto the Superdog . [18] On May 11, 2023, Gunn announced that the film would start filming in January 2024. [23]

On June 9, 2023, The Hollywood Reporter reported that the Authority would be introduced in the film. [19]

In December 2023, Gunn revealed that the suits and score for the film was almost complete. [24]

On February 2, 2024, James Gunn announced that John Murphy compose the score for the film. [2]

On December 15, 2022, James Gunn announced on Twitter that Henry Cavill will not be portraying Superman due to its disconnection from the DCEU franchise and that the film would portray a younger Clark Kent, with Cavill himself issuing a short statement confirming his exit from the role.

On January 14, 2023, James Gunn debunked reports on social media insinuating that the character's casting process had begun, stating that no formal search for actors to portray Superman would occur until after the script has been completed. On May 13, 2023, Lex Luthor was revealed to be in the film, it also was revealed that David Corenswet , Jacob Elordi , Tom Brittney , Andrew Richardson, and Pierson Fodé [25] were being considered to portray Superman; while Emma Mackey, Rachel Brosnahan , Phoebe Dynevor , and Samara Weaving are contending to play Lois Lane. It was also revealed that Nicholas Hoult was the only actor being considered for the role of Lex Luthor, after he was speculated to have been previously up for the role of Superman. [10] That same day, Gunn announced that he was eyeing actors he previously worked with for the role of Lex Luthor with testing beginning for a part simply labeled “Apex”. [26] On June 26, 2023, screen tests apparently took place over Father's Day weekend, which also mentioned that Alexander Skarsgard and Bill Skarsgard are also on the shortlist to play Lex Luthor. [27]

On June 27, 2023, The Hollywood Reporter reported that David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan were cast in the lead roles as Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane, respectively. [5]

On July 11, 2023, Vanity Fair revealed in an exclusive that Isabela Merced , Edi Gathegi , and Nathan Fillion were cast as Hawkgirl , Michael Holt/Mister Terrific , and Guy Gardner/Green Lantern . [7] The Hollywood Reporter revealed the next day that Anthony Carrigan was cast as Rex Mason/Metamorpho . [8]

On October 10, 2023, Variety revealed that Jason Momoa has officially engaged in talks to play Lobo , either in Superman: Legacy or in a standalone film. [28]

On November 15, 2023, Deadline reported that María Gabriela De Faría joined the cast as Angela Spica/Engineer . [9]

On November 20, 2023, Deadline reported that Nicholas Hoult was in talks to portray Lex Luthor [11] and the next day, it was also reported that Sara Sampaio and Skyler Gisondo had joined the cast as Eve Teschmacher and Jimmy Olsen. [12] [14]

On December 11, 2023, James Gunn confirmed on social media that Nicholas Hoult has joined the cast as Lex Luthor. [29]

On December 15, 2023, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Miriam Shor is in early talks to join the cast in an undisclosed role. [30]

On January 27, 2024, it was reported that the working title of the film was " Genesis ". [34]

On February 29, 2024, in honor of the character's 86th birthday in the comics, Gunn announced that filming had officially begun. Alongside the announcement, the film was officially retitled to Superman and a first look at the new Superman suit was released. [35] [36]

Superman's Biography (Pre-Crisis)

  • View history

This page is Superman's biography from the comic books continuity which ended in 1985 with Crisis on Infinite Earths .

  • 1 Early Life

Early Life [ ]

Golden Age Origin

A baby Kal-El is rocketed to Earth from Krypton.

Baby Superman Orphanage

The baby displays his superpowers in his orphanage.

Baby Kal-El (originally Kal-L) was born to Jor-El (originally Jor-L) and Lara (originally Lora) on the planet Krypton . Shortly after his birth, his father placed him in a space-ship model he had constructed, as he had run out of time to build a full-size ship to carry the whole family off the planet. The ship was launched, and traveled through interstellar space towards Earth. (" The Origin of Superman ")

His rocket landed in rural Smallville . There, he was found by Martha and Jonathan Kent (originally Mary and unnamed adoptive father), who soon took him to the orphanage. In the orphanage, the baby performed amazing feats of strength, frightening the staff. When the Kents returned the next day to adopt him, the staff were only too happy to be rid of the uncontrollable baby. The kents named him Clark, after Martha's family, the Clarks. (" The Origin of Superman ")

The Kents soon discovered the amazing powers their adoptive son had. He was seemingly invulnerable, faster than a locomotive, and able to leap amazing distances. (" The Origin of Superman ")

As Clark approached adulthood, Martha grew ill and died, and Jonathan soon after. On his death bed, Jonathan made Clark swear to use his powers for good. Clark soon adopted the identity of Superman, to make good on his promise to his father. (" The Origin of Superman ")

Adulthood [ ]

Superman visited his new Fortress of Solitude for the first time. There, Batman played a prank on him. (" The Super-Key to Fort Superman ")

Brainiac Koko

Superman's first encounter with Brainiac.

When Clark Kent and Lois Lane accompanied a new space rocket to cover its maiden voyage, Brainiac appeared and attacked. Superman slipped out of the rocket, and engaged Brainiac, but was confounded by his high-tech weapons and forcefields. Brainiac shrunk Metropolis and added it to his collection of shrunken cities. Superman rescued Metropolis, as well as Kandor , a surviving Kryptonian city. Superman added it to his fortress, pledging to one day enlarge it. (" The Super-Duel in Space ")

Jimmy Olsen , having been granted three magical wishes, used them in an attempt to repay Superman for his heroics. One of his wishes lead to the creation of a Supergirl , who failed to be very helpful to Superman and ended up sacrificing herself to save his life. (" The Girl of Steel ")

The Supergirl from Krypton

Superman meets his cousin, Kara, for the first time.

Superman met his cousin, Kara Zor-El , who had crash-landed outside Metropolis. She told him the story of how she survived Krypton's destruction. She became the new Supergirl, and Superman put her into the Midvale Orphanage , where she would live under the name Linda Lee. (" The Supergirl from Krypton ")
