So what’s next?

The Class of 2023, as well as new graduate and professional students, have settled in but many are probably wondering what the next few years holds for them at Duke.

One key element of Orientation Week is, as its name implies, getting students going in the right direction. Part of that is feeling welcomed and at home here on campus. Part is learning how to put your best foot forward, regardless of your backgrounds and previous experiences.

Below is a selection of the many words of welcome delivered this week by faculty, administrators and students alike to various student groups, all designed to help them thrive in their Duke experience.

Class of 2023 Undergraduate Convocation

President Vincent Price

“Here before you at Duke, along that imaginary line that traces the road between East Campus and West, an entire universe of knowledge awaits your exploration. So, brave explorers in the class of 2023, may the next four years take you on a remarkable journey of discovery that begins now. Congratulations, and welcome.”

(For the full speech, click here.)

Christoph Guttentag:

Dean of Admissions Christoph Guttentag

“My staff and I had the pleasure of helping with move-in and it represents some of what we love so much about Duke. The enthusiasm, the warmth, the careful planning and the spontaneous celebrations. And most important, the efforts of so many people coming together simply to help other people who need it. That sense of community is a part of what makes Duke special and now you’re a part of that community too. ...

“Being a real Duke student is about growing and changing and helping each other. We chose you because you showed us you are able and willing and ready. Every one of you has earned your place here. Don’t lose your nerve. It won’t always be easy but it will be great.

“It gives me great pleasure to present to [the deans], to President Price and to our university community the class that will succeed and make us proud in ways that we—and they—can’t even imagine. The spectacular class of 2023.”

Luke Powery, dean of Duke Chapel

“On this new day create something so new that even in a fractured world this class of 2023 would be inducted into the hall of fame of humanity because they knew what meant to learn, live, and love in community.”

DSG President Liv McKinney

“If my plan had worked out as I hoped three years ago, I would have missed out on some of the best and most meaningful moments of my life at Duke.

“The thing about Duke is that if you’re lucky your next four years won’t go to plan at all. … And more likely than not, you’ll fail at something. As a result you’ll grow in ways you never thought possible.

“Class of 2023 I can’t wait to see you define your own successes here. I can’t wait to see how your plans develop into more you ever could have imagined and how you grow as a result of this and how our campus evolves with you now here.

Undergraduate Education

Gary Bennett, Dean of Undergraduate Education

Pratt School of Engineering

Ravi Bellamkonda, Dean of the Pratt School of Engineering

"Congratulations, and welcome to Duke! You are home.  The Duke family is your family, and it’s a tight family.  You will make friends here who will be a part of your life for a long time—and those friendships extend to those who have gone before and those who will come after.

“We will do all we can to ensure your success. In fact, I believe Duke is only successful when all of Duke is rooting for each member of Duke’s family!

"We will do all we can to help you become whoever it is that you want to become--and I have no doubt that we’ll love the world that you will create through your actions and thought.”

Graduate and Professional School Convocation

Jim Coleman, John S. Bradway Professor of the Practice of Law

“Some of you may have a notion that you need to determine while at Duke precisely how your career should unfold, that to be a successful doctor, or engineer, or lawyer, you must perform neurosurgery at major hospitals, or build tall buildings, or lead major law firms.  But nothing could be further from the truth.  The role of Duke’s graduate and professional schools is to prepare you to be an excellent practitioner, whatever path you follow.  You can pursue justice and fairness in the world wherever your path leads.”

Sanford School Graduate School Orientation

Judith Kelley, Dean of Sanford School of Public Policy

“Our incoming graduate students are the future of policy - and the future of our world. In this increasingly complex environment, public policy research and education is more valuable than ever before. Our programs transcend disciplinary boundaries and are vital to the most pressing issues that require policy solutions – inequality, health, environment, human rights, security and more.

“At the Sanford School of Public Policy, our students pursue innovative policy solutions to create positive change in the world. We are proud of them already for their many accomplishments, and we know that their degrees will propel them forward to help our world.”

Valerie Ashby: I want to reassure you that we are ready for your children. We have them. We’ve chosen them. We’re ready for them. There’s nothing that’s going to happen to them that we can’t handle. So you can breathe

Trinity College of Arts & Sciences

Valerie Ashby, Dean of Trinity College of Arts and Sciences, speaking to parents and family members in Page Auditorium

“If you are worried, anxious, concerned, sad, in denial – I want to reassure you that we are ready for your children. We have them. We’ve chosen them. We’re ready for them. So you can breathe.”

“There will be moments that (students) question. Reassure them that they belong here. Tell them things like this: we chose them not because they’re perfect but because they are perfectly imperfect. We chose them because they’re kind and they’re going to help us up our game intellectually and in service to the world.”

“We want them to leave room in their schedules to have relationships. If they don’t take the time to get to know someone different than who they are, they’ve missed the Duke experience.”

Jim Roberts, Fred W. Shaffer Professor of Economics

“You may have heard this metaphor: Getting a liberal arts education is like doing pushups for your brain. It’s also about doing pullups and squats and a whole lot of cardio. And that’s a really good thing. My role is trying to help students understand how much they are capable of – how many pushups they can do. It’s my job to help them understand how far they can go.”

“I design my courses to be really, really challenging. I tell students, ‘it’s OK’…because this is such a safe and risk-free environment to try something hard. The downsides are so minimal compared to the possible upsides. (For instance), the benefits of trying a course outside your major are so much greater than the downside that you may not love it.”

Madeline “Mac” Gagné, junior mathematics major

“If you want to know what your students are thinking, it’s probably some mix of ‘Wow this place is huge. Look at all this food. And I’m not crying, you’re crying.’”

“A lot of what I needed to learn at Duke…was that it’s OK to ask for help. It’s something that is necessary for success.”

School of Medicine Orientation

Dr. Mary Klotman, Dean of the School of Medicine

“People often ask me about my job. I tell them the only thing I am certain about is that everything is always changing.  And nowhere is change more prevalent than in healthcare.”

“In a career that has in the past been more traditional and slow to evolve, change is upon us:

A focus on health rather than medicine; Patient-centered care; Shared decision-making; Technology to improve health (use it wisely); Data science – using determinants of health beyond EMR to improve care; interprofessional care – working as teams as never before; and a focus on value.”

“And while change can be challenging and often can stressful, it offers tremendous opportunity. So, my message to you tonight is simple – although perhaps not simply done. Drive change for good. You have this power, and this can be your generation’s legacy. Embrace it!”

Welcome for Student Veterans

I encourage all students to participate in extracurricular activities, build networking skills, and interact with their seniors and learn from them. Finally, I would like you to know we all are here to help you out, and by the end of your curriculum, you will come out to be a better version of yourselves.

I would like to conclude my speech with these words: ‘A bright future is nothing more than a combination of determination, optimism, and self-assurance.’

Good morning students, staff, and parents. I hope you are all doing well and are ready to embark on a new academic journey. Today, I am here to welcome all of our students to the new academic session.

As we start this new school year, I want to remind everyone of the importance of education. Education is not only about acquiring knowledge and skills, but it also prepares us for life. The lessons you learn in the classroom will serve you well in the future, whether you go on to higher education or enter the workforce.

As you begin this new academic session, I encourage you to approach your studies with a growth mindset. This means that you believe that your abilities can be developed through hard work and perseverance. Remember that failure is not the end, but rather an opportunity to learn and grow.

To support your academic success, we have an outstanding faculty and staff who are dedicated to providing you with the best education possible. They will work with you to help you reach your full potential and achieve your goals. I also encourage you to take advantage of the resources available to you, such as our library, technology center, and after-school programs.

One of my top priorities as your principal is to ensure that our students receive a high-quality education. This means providing them with engaging and challenging learning experiences, as well as the support they need to succeed. To achieve this, we will be working closely with our faculty and staff to implement effective teaching strategies and support programs.

In addition to academic success, we also place a strong emphasis on building character. Our school values of respect, responsibility, and excellence serve as a guide for how we interact with others and approach our work. I encourage you to embody these values in your daily lives and to be good role models for your peers.

One of the highlights of our school is the vibrant and inclusive school community. I encourage you to get involved in our school's clubs, organizations, and sports teams. Participating in extracurricular activities is a great way to meet new friends, develop new skills, and have fun.

Finally, I want to stress the importance of communication and collaboration. Whether you are working with classmates on a group project or talking with your teachers about your progress, communication and collaboration are key to your success. I encourage you to reach out to your teachers and classmates for support and to work together to achieve your goals.

In conclusion, I am excited to welcome all of you to the new academic session and look forward to working with you to achieve your full potential. Remember that education is a journey, not a destination, and that with hard work, perseverance, and a growth mindset, you can achieve anything you set your mind to.

welcome speech for students orientation programme

New Student Orientation 2018: Opening Program Remarks to Parents and Students, Class of 2022

Good morning! On behalf of President Brown and Provost Morrison, it is my great pleasure to welcome you all to Boston University. I’m delighted to see you here so early in the morning. A special welcome to those of you who are on campus for the first time. I hope you will discover over the next two days, what I have discovered in my six short years at BU: that you have entered a lively, challenging, diverse, and warm community.

To you parents here, I look forward to getting to know the exceptional young people you have raised, and to helping provide a rich array of opportunities for them to learn, to grow, to discover who they are, and how they want to make a difference in the world.

To you students of the class of 2022, welcome! I’m here to say a few introductory words about the heart of your Boston University experience—the intellectual adventure you are about to undertake. As one of the nation’s leading private research universities, BU offers more than 130 undergraduate majors in fields as diverse as Middle East and North African Studies, biomedical engineering, psychology, and theatre performance; nearly 75 minors (how about Earth and Environmental Sciences, or International Relations, or my own field, English literature?), and hundreds of courses from which you will choose to create for yourself an education that will open new worlds and new possibilities for yourself.

At the center of your BU experience is our new general education program, the BU Hub. The Hub is the common educational experience for all BU undergraduates. While each of you will choose your own pathway—you will “hub” in your own way—you will all be developing six essential capacities—the knowledge, skills, and habits of mind that will equip you to thrive in our increasingly complex and interconnected world—and thrive not just in your professional life, but also in your personal and civic life. In courses and cocurricular experiences, in your major and out, across all 4 years, through the BU Hub you will explore the university’s rich array of learning experiences as you develop ways of thinking crucial to your future: Philosophical, Aesthetic and Historical Interpretation; Social and Scientific Inquiry; Diversity, Civic Engagement and Global Citizenship; Communication; Quantitative Reasoning, and something we call the Intellectual Toolkit. You will hear much more about the Hub later today, so for now make a note to book mark the BU Hub website (www.bu.edu/hub) and the BU Bulletin (which you can find on the main BU page under academics)–your sources of information for all academic programs.

As you meet with your advisors to talk about your interests and aspirations, and to select the courses you will take this year, I encourage you to go forth in a spirit of exploration and adventure. Try new things: choose provocative classes that expose you to new ideas and alternative ways of thinking. The BU Hub embodies the broad education that is a distinctive feature of American higher education, part of what feeds our creativity. So embrace that great tradition. Experiment. Take intellectual chances, choose a course in a field you know nothing about. It should be scary, and thrilling: that’s what education is. Education: from the Latin educare —to lead out.

BU’s incredibly talented faculty will be your guides and allies in your exploration. They are your greatest resource. The scholars here are leaders in their fields and are applying their expertise through scholarship, research and real-world practice to address both the most pressing challenges of the day and the enduring human questions. Get to know them – talk to them after class, seek them out at campus events and during office hours (they are there waiting for you to come talk), ask them about their research, tell them about your own ideas. They will challenge you, guide you, and open doors to new possibilities.

You have chosen to study at a research university: so, what does that mean for you? The heart of BU as a major research university is a culture of inquiry. As faculty, we are hired to ask questions and to explore possible answers—in collaboration with our colleagues here and at other universities, with our graduate students, and with our undergraduates. The products of our research are (in engineering and other fields) new inventions; (in the sciences) new discoveries about how the natural and physical worlds work; (in the social sciences) new knowledge of human behavior; (in the humanities) new understandings of the record of human achievement, of who we are and what our lives mean; and (in the arts) new expressions of the human spirit. We register patents, begin start-up companies, deliver papers, write articles and books, give performances, mount exhibitions, and teach courses—all ways of taking our new works, our new ideas into the world, with the aim (and it’s a lofty one) of improving human life and the planet on which we live it. This culture of inquiry is the culture into which you are entering. You have gotten here in part by becoming excellent at answering questions; we’re now asking you to learn to ASK questions. To explore possible answers. To ask more questions. And, perhaps hardest of all, to hold off the impulse to supply quick answers, to learn to live in the suspense of not knowing. As part of your participation in this culture of inquiry, work with your advisors to plan how you are going to undertake your own work of original research, scholarship or creative activity–working on a professor’s research in a lab, say, or pursuing an independent project under the guidance of a faculty member—maybe an exploration of a favorite writer or an analysis of the immigrant crisis, or composing a new piece of music—all ways of generating new ideas, new knowledge, which is the fundamental work of a research university. Funding for such projects for undergraduates—for supplies, for a summer stipend so you have time to immerse yourself in a project– is available to you through the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (or UROP) which granted nearly a million dollars last year to around 400 students for research that resulted in hundreds of presentations, publications and abstracts. Look out for the UROP Research Symposium on Family and Friends’ Weekend. You will be amazed at what your fellow students have done and at what you, too, can do at BU.

You have come to Boston University. When you step outside of the studio or lab or classroom, not only will you discover a campus that is teeming with activities – student organizations, clubs, athletics, exhibitions, performances, community service programs – you will find the whole city of Boston at your doorstep. The courses you will take and the professors you will get to know enliven, and are enlivened by, the rich and vibrant culture of the university and the great city around us. Get out into the city. Take a course that uses Boston as its classroom. Sign up for community service. Head over to the Museum of Science or down to the Institute for Contemporary Art for an afternoon. Take your reading to a bench in the Public garden. Ask your new roommate to go with you to a free concert at Jordan Hall or get standing room tickets to a Red Sox game at Fenway Park. Your experiences in the city and around the campus are part of your education—and essential to your discovery of your community, what makes BU a university, your university, in and of the city of Boston.

Finally, I would encourage you to take advantage of BU’s position as one of the world’s premier international institutions. While our connection with the City of Boston roots us in this unique place with its rich history and fond traditions, we derive our sense of who we are in this place from a long history of students, faculty and staff who have ventured beyond our campus and city boundaries to engage internationally, and from a long history of faculty and students from around the world who have come to BU to study and pursue research. BU offers an immense array of opportunities to create a truly global education, by, first, getting to know—really know—your fellow students. Look around: the world is here . To our international students: reach out, as difficult as this is when you are in a strange place and the familiar sounds and tastes and smells seem far away. Ask questions about how things work here; don’t be afraid to show you don’t know; make the effort to make real friends with students from the US and other countries. US students: I say the same: step outside your national borders here on Comm Ave, and welcome your fellow students from around the world. Ask how things are done in their countries. Find out about their lives, their ideas, what matters to them. Express your curiosity and your understanding of what it feels like to be in an unfamiliar place with people you don’t know. You may feel awkward or afraid that, in your ignorance, that you will say the wrong thing and offend. And you probably will. We are all ignorant— we are all awkward in our not-knowing, we all sometimes say the wrong thing. A few moments of awkwardness, embarrassment—or an offense given and forgiven– are a small price to pay for what you will learn about other people, about other cultures, and for the human warmth you will discover. Then, you students from Minnesota, Massachusetts, California and the rest of the United States: set aside your fear and go earn your Hub unit in Global Citizenship by taking the plunge your international classmates have already taken: study abroad, go conduct international research, perform overseas, or engage in public service on the other side of the world. It will be challenging. And I guarantee it will change your life.

As you set out on the incredible journey that will help to shape the thinkers, workers, citizens, and difference-makers you are destined to be, I would invite you to consider the difference between education and training. Here is a fact: you are likely to live 60-70 years after you graduate from BU—that’s an astonishing number of years, during which a lot will change, and in ways we don’t know. Training, from the Latin “to drag,” to pull after, is preparation for the known; education, again, “to raise up” and “to lead out” is preparation for the unknown. Preparing for your first job is important— and you will find here plenty of support for that—but much more important is educating yourself broadly across the range of human interests and endeavors so that you are ready for 70 years of intelligent, informed, creative, compassionate engagement with the unexpected.*

I want you to know that the entire University community is here to support, sustain, and encourage you as you commit to study at BU. We could not be more privileged to welcome you into this vibrant learning community. It is you who make us what we are, and we look forward to the fresh ideas and energy you bring to our campus. I speak for the entire faculty, staff, and student community of Boston University in saying we are so happy you have made the decision to join us. Welcome!

Employee and student handbook are not sufficient anymore when it comes to introducing and welcoming them on their new environment. It needs to have a good and effective orientation speech to make them on board. Orientation speech is not made by a speech writer, It is the organization that manages these speeches.

An orientation speech is just as important as persuasive speech . It needs to be clear and informative so that the audience will not lose track of the things the speaker said. Anyone can give an orientation speech but it is best when the speaker has good and effective speech skills.

What Is an Orientation Speech?

An orientation speech is a speech given to a group of people, usually, employee and students who are the first timer in that particular setting or the environment are new to them.

The reason for this is to give them a heads up of the things and what needs to be familiarized in order for them to adjust more quickly. An orientation speech in word is also the time to set out all the rules and regulation that needs to be followed in that environment.

Tips on Preparing an Orientation Speech

The problems encountered by most keynote speech is that it is too boring and overwhelming. That is because of inadequate preparation and neglecting its importance. So, if you are given a task to deliver an orientation speech, be sure to follow these basic guidelines to prevent those unwanted circumstances.

  • Prepare in advance. As always, it is very important that you prepare your speech and your materials ahead of time. So that when the time comes, you are now ready and you are in control of your speech.
  • Know your audience. It is also very important to know who you are giving your orientation speech to as this will determine your entire speech.
  • Create a speech outline. Speech outline will make everything easy for you. It will organize and group your main ideas and guide you logically in your speech.
  • Make your orientation speech conversational. Do not talk the entire time. Allow your audience to connect and talk with you.
  • Be humorous. Orientations are not that formal. You can make funny side notes to ensure that your audience will have a good time in your orientation speech.

A woman with a cookbook reading a welcome speech recipe. Plus, a list of ingredients.

There are six common or standard content items in a good welcome speech.

  • Greetings to welcome everyone and thanking them for coming along.
  • Acknowledgement of special guests, if there are any.
  • An introduction of the event itself and a brief overview of special highlights the audience will want to know about.
  • Any important housekeeping information, for instance: where the bathrooms are, where lunch will be served and when...
  • An introduction for the next speaker, if there is one.
  • Thanking everyone for coming once more and then concluding having made everybody feel at ease, eagerly anticipating what is to come.

Numbers 1, 3, and 6 are basic essentials you cannot do without. Numbers 2, 4 and 5 may, or may not, be applicable. Pick what you need from them to fit your occasion.

Short sample welcome speech for a conference

Now let's put all six ingredients into an example of a short welcome speech to open a conference that you can adapt for your own speech.

* (This speech is pure fiction! I made it up to show you how it's done. You'll see its tone is formal rather than informal to fit the occasion. I don't think there is a group called Parents United. However, there are others with a similar mission: 10 Inspiring Organizations that Promote Literacy and Education .)

Example welcome speech - "Readers by Right"

"Sue-Ellen Thomas, Jim Smith, Jane Brown and all of our guests, good morning!

My name is April Molloy, and it's my privilege and great pleasure on behalf of Parents United to welcome you all here today.

We are delighted to have you with us to participate and share in this special occasion, our 5th annual Children's Day Conference. Thank you for coming. That many of you have willingly traveled long distances to be here serves as a reminder to us all just how important our work is.

Quote extract: We want all children, regardless of race, creed or circumstance to achieve their full potential.

Parents United is committed to actively raising the quality of life for every child. We want all children, regardless of race, creed or circumstance to achieve their full potential. Our task is to make it possible. Our mission is to provide practical, step by step assistance.

This year our theme is literacy. We've named the day 'Readers by Right'.

Thanks to the 1948 United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we are aware of 'rights' in many spheres, including education.  Article 26 declared it should be compulsory and free for children.

That goal is as pertinent today as it was then. And it's a goal I know we all share - the full development of every child. As a body, Parents United recognizes good reading skills established in childhood as the foundation of fulfilling, and ongoing education.

Quote extract: Jim and Jane bring their passion and knowledge of how to reach those in our communities who are frequently overlooked or bypassed.

We are honored to have Sue-Ellen Thomas, Jim Smith and Jane Brown with us today. All three are esteemed specialists in teaching young children to read.

Sue-Ellen has worked for a long time with educational authorities to establish programs putting in place necessary pre-reading skills. Her hard work needs no introduction. The results speak for themselves.

Jim and Jane bring their passion, and knowledge of how to reach those in our communities who are frequently overlooked or bypassed. Their work among disadvantaged English-as-a-second-language families has bridged gaps that were deep dark chasms.

Prepare yourself to be challenged, excited and inspired.

And before I handover to Lesley Watts, our coordinator for 'Readers by Right', who will outline the day's various events, I want to say once more on behalf of the Parents United organizing committee, welcome. It's wonderful to see so many of you here."

Writing your welcome speech

Tips to help you get your speech right.

When you're entering information into your speech planner:

  • ensure you've got all the names of individuals or special guests you need to mention specifically and, that you know how to pronounce each of them. Also check that you know and use their preferred pronouns: them/they, she/her, he/him...
  • double check the remarks you're going to make about them, or anything else, are factually correct.

Use your introduction of your guests/or the event, as a "teaser" for what is going to come. It will help create anticipation in the audience. Don't ruin it by giving too much away! Just enough to tempt and no more.

Keep it brief. One to two minutes is generally sufficient.

(The word count of my sample welcome speech is 357. It will take approximately 2 minutes to say .)

Use the S-S-S formula for success: Short, Simple and Sincere. Your listeners will appreciate it.

What does a good welcome speech do?

Audience members listening intently.

An effective welcome speech has three important functions. It:

  • signals the official beginning of an event . It says to the audience, hush, sit down, stop talking and listen. What you came for is starting!
  • sets the tone for the occasion through the choice of language used . For example, using light-hearted and informal words to welcome guests to a dear friend's birthday party may be completely appropriate.  However, the same type of language to welcome family and friends to a memorial service is unlikely to be. In that setting, people generally expect a more solemn and formal word choice. They could be deeply offended and think the use of casual language is disrespectful.  Understanding and getting tone right is a key element in the overall success of your welcome speech.
  • unites the audience . It draws everyone together in the common purpose at the heart of the occasion. For example, at a birthday party, the welcome speech invites everyone to join in celebrating the person whose birthday it is. The welcome speech opening a specialist conference will affirm its principal purpose: the coming together of people with mutual interests to meet and share new knowledge. Or if a welcome speech is given to newcomers in a workplace, club or educational setting, its purpose is to give an introductory overview of how things work to help them feel more at ease in their new situation - to help them develop a sense of belonging.

Getting the tone right for an event

What is tone.

Tone is the combined impact of the words chosen to express something, with how they are structured and, delivered.  All three elements come together to create tone * .

Get tone wrong, and your welcome speech is a disaster.

Get it right, and it's a triumph!

(Yes, that's hyperbole but I'm sure you get the idea. ☺)

* Tone - a mood, quality or feeling

How to choose the right words

The beginning of getting tone right is to think about your audience and the event itself. Your goal is to unite and bring them together in the main purpose at the core of the occasion. What type of language will do that most appropriately and easily?

Infographic illustrating the principal differences between formal and informal language to create tone

To answer that question, think about the common interest everybody shares - the principal reason behind them getting together.  It will help guide your language choice.

Is it a fun event like a birthday party for close friends and family? If so, then informal language is likely to be the most apt.

You might hear something along the lines of: "Well, here we all are! The big day has finally arrived. Jean-Marie is 50! Half a century! How on earth did that happen?"

If it's a remembrance service for someone who has recently died, the language you're likely to hear is more formal.

For example: "Friends, family, colleagues, thank you for joining us today to celebrate and give thanks for our dear Jean-Marie. Your presence is gratefully appreciated."

What is appropriate? What is expected?  Do spend some time thinking tone through. Misunderstanding and getting it wrong can be very embarrassing for everyone. If in doubt, ask someone whose opinion you trust.

Welcome Speech in English: Best Samples, Examples & Tips

Why are welcome speeches necessary.

Most of the gatherings and ceremonies are held with a purpose. They are either planned events or spontaneous gatherings. In both cases, it is important to know how to organize such events. We must prepare ourselves to conduct the event properly.

Let us imagine that you are hosting a gathering. You have prepared everything, including food, drinks, decorations, etc., and even set up the stage. However, you forgot one thing – a welcome speech. What happens next? Do you start talking immediately without waiting for everyone to arrive? Of course not!

The same goes for a meeting. How many times did you attend meetings where people didn’t introduce themselves? Or worse, they talked about themselves too much during the meeting. In addition, some speakers talk directly to the audience without introducing themselves. This makes it difficult for the attendees to comprehend the event’s process and connect with its objectives.

So why is a welcome speech in English needed? To begin with, it is necessary to give a brief overview of the topic. Secondly, it helps to provide information about the organization and its history. Thirdly, it allows us to highlight our achievements. And finally, it creates a good impression on guests. Otherwise, they might ask questions like “Where is this event going?”.

Significance of welcome speech

The significance of the welcome speech won’t be apparent without understanding what makes up the history of an event. An event can be defined as a sequence of activities carried out over a period of time. These activities are usually organized into stages, each with a specific purpose. For example, an event may start with opening remarks, followed by a keynote address, and finally concluded with closing remarks. Each stage of an event has a different set of responsibilities.

In the case of a welcoming ceremony, the welcome speech is considered to be one of the most important parts of the whole gathering. In fact, it is the most crucial aspect of the entire event. This is because the welcome speech serves several purposes.

First, it introduces the guests to the host. Second, it provides information regarding the upcoming program. Third, it creates a positive impression among the attendees. Fourth, it helps in creating a sense of unity among the participants. Fifth, it helps in establishing good relations between the hosts and the guests. And finally, it ensures that the guest feels comfortable during the occasion.

Objectives of a Welcome Speech in English

The objective of a welcome speech in English is to introduce yourself and the rest of the attendees at the event. This is done through a short introduction about who you are, what you do, why you’re attending, etc. The following are the objectives of a welcome speech:

  • Introduce yourself
  • Provide Information regarding the event
  • Create a positive impression among attendees
  • Establish good relations between hosts and guests
  • Ensure guests feel comfortable during the event
  • Help build unity among participants
  • Explain the purpose of the meeting/event
  • Set up the agenda for the meeting/event
  • Make introductions
  • Give background info about the organization
  • Highlight achievements (if any)

Welcome Address in English For Students

It’s natural for attendees of any event to expect an introductory speech, which sets the tone for the occasion. A host can easily command attention with an effective welcome. Even the longest speeches have the capacity to hold an audience’s interest when delivered in a catchy and impressive manner.

A short opening speech for a commencement ceremony

To everyone present, good morning. A very warm welcome to our respected faculty, our remarkable parents, and our dear students. Special recognition is due for our Chief Guest (name of chief guest). It’s a true honor to have such a successful alumnus (or state the chief guest’s job title). We express our biggest gratitude for accepting our invitation to deliver today’s keynote speech.

I’m standing here as a lucky witness to our dear students’ academic journey. Our school is very proud of everything you have accomplished and your small but not minor contributions to society. You’ve brought prestige to our name and deserve the title of one of our school’s most successful and dedicated batch of students.

With your teachers’ guidance and parents’ support, you’ve reached remarkable heights. I’d like to take this time to extend my gratitude to our faculty and our parents, for understanding, encouraging, and nurturing our students.

Graduates, you are about to start another chapter in your life. An exciting yet scary period. From now on, you will face more challenges, but I am confident that you’re adequately equipped to face any tribulation that comes your way. Remember that with conviction and self-belief, no mountain is too high to climb. The laurels you’ve brought back to our school are only the beginning. I am genuinely excited to see the astonishing feats that your futures hold.

A long opening speech for a commencement ceremony

Good morning everyone! I would like to extend a very warm welcome to our esteemed faculty, astounding parents, and our dear students. I’m honored to open our commencement ceremony and stand here where many of our accomplished alumni who I look up to once stood.

I extend a particularly warm welcome to our Chief Guest (name of chief guest), who as one of our outstanding alumni, has really set the standard for exemplary accomplishments.

(enumerate key achievements of chief guest)

Her/his professional and philanthropic endeavors attest to their upbringing and the values she/he lives by. We want to thank you for responding positively to our invitation to be the keynote speaker on today’s auspicious occasion.

As another academic year reaches its end, I’m sure that our dear students are anxious and also filled with hope and excitement. This is their final school event in our renowned school/college/university (name of school). But hopefully, it won’t be their last awarding ceremony.

We are extremely fortunate to have such a talented and passionate group of graduates who have earned laurels in honor of our school, adding to its distinction and great reputation. The amazing encouragement and unconditional support of our parents throughout the school year have been extraordinary. They have stood by their children in every school event. Our teachers and staff are truly thankful for the trust you’ve given us. Your children’s journey wouldn’t have been a huge success without your guidance and nurture.

It’s been a remarkable experience to witness the passion and commitment our students have exhibited in all their undertakings. I am filled with certitude that you will achieve whatever goal you’ve set your mind on. Adulthood is going to be jammed with more trials you’ve never imagined before. I am kidding. Maybe. Joking aside, you will win as long as you work hard and believe in yourself.

Remember that you are valuable and take every challenge you face as an opportunity to prove your worth and get better. Also, surround yourselves with people who are good for your well-being and treat them the way you’d like to be treated.

Maintain your sense of humor because not much else will get you through when the going gets rough. Life can be very special and you can truly make a mark, which doesn’t always need to have global proportions. Be accountable for your mistakes and learn from them. Keep nurturing your passions and remain as driven, bright, and astonishing as you are today. You are all wonderful and I can’t wait to see your future accomplishments, because they will be great.

Thank you and do us proud!

Good morning! We welcome everyone today who is here to celebrate this annual event for their beloved teachers. We don’t always get to thank our teachers, but on this day, we pay tribute to our second parents.

Our steadfast yet affectionate teachers should be our role models. They inspire us daily and motivate us to reach our greatest potential. They impart wisdom so that we don’t only excel academically, but as good people and responsible members of our society.

Children’s innocence and love are incomparable and difficult to resist. Their smile is the closest thing to heaven that we can glimpse in the world.

School is your children’s second home, and we teachers are their second parents. We thank you for the opportunity to take care of and guide your little angels.

Join us to celebrate our students and make this day as eventful and fun as it can be!

But for now, let’s leave our worries and cares out in the hall. Let’s celebrate your wise decision to matriculate in our institution. Our college has prepared special events and an entertainment program highlighting some of our talented students.

The next few hours will be memorable and exciting! Thank you for listening and let’s get on with it!

Welcome Speech Samples for Business

Note down the key phrases and objectives of the samples below and use the same structure in your own welcome or introduction speech in English.

Sample of Welcome Speech for a Goodbye Get-together

Good evening everyone!

Welcome to my farewell party. I know, I know. You all said you’re sorry to see me go, but that you all would need food and entertainment first to deal with your sadness. So here we are. I shall deliver.

As the Semisonic song goes “Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.” And so it is with great gratitude that the VP in Japan decided to retire early, so the end of his role can mark the beginning of mine. To Toni Takitani, thanks for deciding you’ve had enough!

Kidding aside, I’d like to thank my friends who made this very corporate event a huge success. Look at this, my goodness!

Most importantly, I want to impart my profound gratitude to my boss (name of the boss). Without you, this party won’t have a band. I couldn’t ask for a better mentor. Or I could, but none of them would have changed my life as positively as you have. It saddens me to leave you the most, but it comforts me that you were my biggest source of encouragement to go. Or it may have been your plan all along. Genius!

So to everyone who came, thank you. I’ll have time to thank you properly later, but for now, let’s eat!

Before anything else, I’d like to take this moment to thank Merville & Posque Inc., their CEO Mr. Hyori Asano and his team for putting this event together in record time. I also want to thank everyone who came, our remarkable associates from Osaka, Chiang Rai, and Quezon, our wonderful clients who have stuck with us through thick and thin, and our amazing consultants in various fields of energy conservation. Your interest and patronage are very much appreciated.

A great welcome to all our extraordinary employees and staff members, some of whom have worked and grown along our company’s 23-year history. A big welcome, too, to our interns who have recently joined and brightened our corporate offices.

Today marks the 15th annual MPBC and it’s an honor to be a host in this glorious congress. I myself will be staying for the conference’s entirety to learn what I can about sustainable energy systems and their various implications and impact on the future of our planet.

The activities today will include an overview of all the forums, seminars, and exhibits around the MPBC complex. Second, we will have the inauguration of the new bio-dome on the grounds where we will also honor this year’s retirees. The afternoon’s seminars will kick off after lunch, and I encourage you to attend the discussions and learn about our future plans and projects. Finally, I’d like to encourage everyone to help yourselves to the snack stations in the hallway. Refreshments and sandwiches are on us for the duration of the conference.

I won’t keep you long and let’s begin the day. I wish all of you a valuable and wonderful time! Thank you.

Welcome Speech Samples for Family Functions

Huge family events often have speeches: weddings, birthdays, farewell parties, funerals, anniversaries, and so on. Some of these events normally have hosts and esteemed guests. Here are some tips and samples to inspire you.

  • When drafting your speech, do the research.
  • Highlight the key qualities that are worth mentioning in an opening welcome speech for event.
  • Take note of the welcome address speech sample in this article and create a framework from them.
  • Look up welcome speech quotes and choose the best one to use somewhere in your speech.
  • Greet the chief guest at the event personally and introduce yourself if you don’t know each other.
  • Extend your hard for a handshake and smile to express that they are honored and welcome to the event.

  • Escort the chief guest before you assume host duties.

Welcoming the Chief Guest with a Short Speech

It’s a great honor to welcome our Chief guest and tonight’s keynote speaker. I was worried at first about how to introduce (title and name of Chief guest) because any introduction would pale in comparison to the reality and immensity of her/his accomplishments.

(Enumerate the main accomplishments of the chief guest).

She/he is the ultimate inspiration for young professionals everywhere who want to succeed in the field of international trade. Here to inspire us with her career journey and all the experiences she accumulated along the day, join me in giving a round of applause to (title and name of chief guest).

Welcoming the Chief Guest (Longer Version of the Speech)

Introducing our next attendee is a great pleasure of mine. When she/he accepted our invitation to be tonight’s Chief guest and keynote speaker, I almost jumped for joy. Then I realized I would naturally receive the task of introducing her/him. At first, this gave me great anxiety. How would I be able to pull it off and deliver an introduction that would give her background justice? Then I thought, no introduction would ever compare, so it was foolish to aim for success when failure is guaranteed. So I decided to just do it. Our chief guest has accomplished the following, to name a few:

As I looked at her/his professional and personal successes, I realized here is a woman/man who was faced many times with the certainty of failure but had given her circumstances a grad twist by attaining success against all odds. Then I thought, perhaps I should aim for success in this speech, after all.

She/he is an inspiration to many, not only for all the fields of expertise she has earned and the extreme success that went with the process, but she/he has also set the benchmark for philanthropy and good deeds. She/he has done this quietly, too, and she/he might strangle me for revealing it to the public. I didn’t even know half of the wonderful things she/he has done for our community before my research.

Without further ado, and here to inspire us with her wisdom and grand skill, join me in welcoming our Chief guest (title and name of chief guest).

Welcome Speech for Parents

Hi everyone!

As host and brother of the groom, I’d like to take this time to introduce the parents of the bride. Without them, my brother wouldn’t be the lucky and happy man he is today. More than that, I have witnessed how they accepted my brother and treated him as a son long before the engagement. I often tag along on family trips and have spent hours of wonderful conversations with them. Apart from my own parents, they are two of the most affectionate and hospitable people I’ve ever met. If I could meet a woman whose parents are just like them, I’d consider myself half as lucky as my brother.

Let’s give a round of applause for (names of the bride’s parents). Thank you for embracing my brother into the fold.

Welcome Speech Samples for National Holidays

I am very happy to be a member of such an elite school where we learned from such great professors who teach us beyond the boundaries of the ordinary classroom. They’re also the minds and hands behind such a big event every year. I’d like to use this chance to organize such a wonderful event this year. It’s also a great pleasure of mine to introduce our Chief Guest.

The last segment of this article contains tips on welcoming chief guests, esteemed guests, or guests of honor. The tips contained here can be divided into things to consider while drafting the welcome speech, and things to do at the event itself when meeting the chief guest.

A simple thank you would suffice. Make sure you reiterate your gratitude. Some welcome speeches can end with a line that welcomes the guest of honor.

Depending on the context, a welcome speech doesn’t always need to be impressive. In some situations, a straightforward introduction is all you need. However, in some circumstances like commencement ceremonies, farewell parties, dinners, and some others, the audience is prepared to listen to long speeches. In this case, the speech needs to catch the attention of the attendees and maintain their interest. An impressive welcome speech often has an emotional element. Not just parroting big words to describe a person’s achievements or flatter them. Try to use humor if you’re funny by nature or if you can deliver the punchline well. Use popular quotes in your speech. Tell anecdotes relevant to the attendees. Or reveal an epiphany. These are how you should draft a welcome speech set to impress.

Make sure that it is relevant to the content of your welcome speech or the point you’re making. You can use phrases such as the following: * According to… * As the old saying goes… * There’s a quote that has always stuck with me… * Events like this always remind me of one of my favorite quotes… Try to find quotes that are unique and not cliche. You can find some in the lyrics of contemporary music, or lines and dialogues from books and movies, and so on.

Student Orientation Programs

Introduction to college life, becoming familiar with the new environment, welcome to the community, conclusion.

Starting college can cause much anxiety in the heart of a new college student because of all the unknowns–"What should my major be? Will I make any friends? How will I find all of my classes? Whom do I ask if I have a question?" New student orientation programs are designed to guide students in answering all of these questions. Prior to the beginning of classes, students are given an overview of the complete realm of university life, from academics to social activities, through a period of days referred to as orientation. Typically, a staff member or team coordinates the orientation programs within the university and provides the leadership to bring the entire university together. Depending on the size and mission of the institution, the format of orientation will vary from a one-day program to a week-long event. However, regardless of the nature of the program, three objectives should be present in all orientation programs: 1) introducing students to college life; 2) acclimating students to their new surroundings; and3) providing an opportunity for the university to meet the newest members of the community. It is the duty of the coordinator of orientation to design a program that will bring these three goals together.

Introduction to College Life

Introducing students to college life requires presenting as full a view as possible of all the university has to offer. Therefore, academics as well as extracurricular activities should be presented. During orientation, students should be made aware of opportunities to be socially integrated into the college culture. If students do not become socially integrated within the first few weeks of their arrival, they are less likely to stay at that institution. Social activities can include parties, games, concerts, icebreakers, and "hang-out" time. Students also can learn about the various student organizations in which they can be involved. However, orientation programs should not be purely fun and games, for college is more than just fun and games. While the social aspect does play a significant role in one's collegiate experience, the importance of academics should not be over-looked. While a student may focus on one more than the other, both work together in forming the college experience.

Orientation programs begin before classes start; therefore students usually will need to register for classes during orientation. Because new students need some direction and guidance in enrolling for classes, faculty members should have an opportunity to provide academic advising at orientation. An academic component to orientation will give the new students the advantage they will need in making the transition from high school to college. By giving a strong overview of academic expectations, students will be better prepared to meet the challenges of collegiate academics. Therefore, in order to give the most accurate view of an institution, there must be both an academic and social component to the orientation program.

Becoming Familiar with the New Environment

The second aspect of the role of orientation is acclimating students to their new environment. After moving into a new neighborhood, one would ideally like a few days to learn one's way around the new neighborhood. Likewise, orientation should allow students to get their bearings in their new home. For some students, going to college is their first time away from home, so orientation should give them time to become familiar with their new surroundings. New students should meet their roommates and find their classrooms. Through guided tours, campus maps, or even time to just wander, orientation provides a safe avenue for new students to find their way around campus. By moving on campus before classes starts, the new students are able to learn the ropes and not seem so green by the time the academic year begins. Students should become familiar with both physical locations and the workings of the environment during orientation.

Welcome to the Community!

The university community should not only be involved in the preparation and implementation of orientation programs but also have an opportunity to meet the new students. Unlike some of the other programs within campus life, orientation requires the cooperation and the resources of the entire campus community including faculty, dining services, housing, facilities management, and student activities groups. Depending on the size of the institution, the level of community involvement may vary. The administration of a small, liberal arts college may have more opportunities to meet and greet students than that of a large, public school. Whether through receptions, meetings, and even help on move-in day, the university community should be involved in welcoming the new students. For example, faculty may meet new students prior to the beginning of classes. By making a connection, this interaction with the community may in turn even strengthen the student's persistence in college.

Students, as well as faculty and staff, have an important role in orientation. Selecting a specific number of current students to be orientation leaders allows the new students to meet upperclassmen. The orientation leaders can give the new students the inside scoop on college life since they too have been in the new students' shoes. Many institutions use orientation leaders to lead the new students through a series of workshops, campus tours, and social activities. New students may be more open to receive information from the orientation leaders than from a lecturer in a main auditorium. Orientation leaders can also explain some of the details of university life that some administrators would never think of telling them. For instance, orientation leaders can share things such as where to hang out between classes, where to find the best food in town, how to use the laundry room, and how to get involved in campus activities. Often new students have the most contact during orientation with the orientation leaders, so it is imperative that these leaders be properly trained. Therefore, planning orientation leader training should be just as important as planning the actual program. Leaders need to understand the vision of orientation so that it becomes their own and they can communicate that to the new trainees. When selecting orientation leaders, one should look for a good representation of the student body as well as for those who are willing to go the extra mile in helping new students. The readiness of the orientation leaders is the key to the implementation of a successful orientation program.

When designing an orientation program, one must first understand the culture of the institution and the students. A good program for one university may not be conducive to the size or mission of another. In addition, some programs may work better than others depending on the type of student who attends the institution. Even though most orientation programs are designed with the eighteen-year-old, first-time college student in mind, some institutions may have more transfer students or even nontraditional (older) students. Therefore, programs should be implemented to orient them into the academic community as well. Another factor to consider is the orientation of parents. Because parents can aid in the student's transition into college life, the university needs to inform parents as well as students about the structure of the university and where to find additional information.

Orientation programs serve as a foundation for college success. In many instances, orientation programs create a lasting impression for new students and their families. While it is not possible to tell new students everything they will need to know for their entire collegiate experience, orientation programs should create a framework in which students will know where to go, whether it be the tutoring center or health services, if they have additional questions. Orientation is the designated time for the entire university to say, "We welcome you, and we are glad that you are here!" Likewise, orientation is a time to show the new students why they made a good decision in their college choice.

Orientation is a much-needed program that when planned correctly can aid all participants–new students, parents, faculty, staff, administration, and current students. Orientation is designed to answer questions before they are asked and to provide solutions before problems occur. By planning appropriately and using all campus resources, orientation should relieve anxieties and prepare the new students for success.

Anchoring Script for Orientation Day in English

Anchoring Script for Orientation Day

Orientation day is the important and first day of university. This day is organized for the new students who have been accepted and enrolled in to study. On this day a function is organized to take the new students through specific activities like tours, info seccion, and current student panels and all the information students need to know to start into uni life.

Indeed, the orientation day function all depends on the anchors who are the main runner of the function and the one who can impress the audience by the script they have written. Anyone can become an anchor but the main thing is how the anchor represents the script in front of the audience. welcome speech for students orientation programme

To New Students From Dean of Students .

Ladies and Gentlemen.  It is my great pleasure to welcome you to Metropolitan International University.

I wish to congratulate each of you first, on having secured your university place and second for having a good sense to choose to study in Metropolitan International University.

The Dean of Students office puts the student at the centre of everything it does, your experience here at MIU and your success is important to each and every member of staff who works in the different departments.

The Dean of Students office is responsible for the promotion and enhancement of students’ welfare and the discipline in the University.  To deliver this service, we create and oversee a variety of programs that include studies, accommodation, social extra-curricular activities, health, psychosocial support and student leadership.

This week and for the next few weeks you are likely to be bombarded with information and I am conscious of the danger of adding to information overload. Nevertheless, I wish to share a few pieces of information with you.

ACCOMMODATION

University’s Halls/Hostels of Residence

There are four Halls of Residence available to undergraduate students as shall be allocated on your respective Student’s IDs. Each admitted student to the University is attached to a Hall of Residence as part of the identity of that student. i.e; Kilimanjaro, Aarel, Everest and Fugil

Currently the Hostels are allocated to the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the Mbarara Campus.

Student’s stay and usage of facilities in Halls of Residence is guided and regulated by the University Rules and Regulations, which all students would study and get acquainted with especially the Nursing and Midwifery students at Mbarara Campus.

ALTERNATIVE ACCOMMODATION:  RENTALS

Over 95% of undergraduate students reside off campus in privately owned and operated rental units.  These are known as Non-Resident Students. Even others resort to come from home especially those who are blessed to be neighbors to the University.

However, the Dean of Students office together with the Guild Leadership, shall always keep inspecting through your different cribs to ensure adequate safety both hygienic and psychosocial security.

CATERING/MEALS

All students who reside in University Hostels/Halls are provided meals at the University dinning because the University students Regulations prohibit cooking in Halls of Residence.

To those who stay outside the university, find yourself refreshments at our precious canteen and the yet to be completed beautiful cafeteria just as you close nearer to the university premises in Mbarara.

PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT

Know where to go for help.

From now henceforth you will be expected to be more self-reliant. You are responsible for what you do, for ensuring that you do the work that will be required of you.

While we expect you to assume a new level of responsibility, please realise that you are not alone.  It you find things difficult don’t run away; seek help. Part of being responsible for yourself is to recognize when you need support for others.

TALK to people.  Talk to your roommates, classmates, your friends and students’ Guild leaders.  We know peer support contributes hugely to students’ success.

Be in good books with your landlord, your Lecturer and don’t forget pastoral support provided by the University Health Services, Counselling and Guidance Centre and the religious based associations. Additionally, you are encouraged to make use of our partnership with the partner companies/organization that have rich programs for student engagements and career building.

EXTRA – CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Make the most of your time at Metropolitan International University.

Metropolitan International University has a range of experiences that will be availed to you.  You will have abundant opportunities to flourish as a student and as a person.

The University boasts of splendid sports amenities like Volleyball, Football, Music, Cultural explorations and many others as shall be discovered during your stay with us.  There is something to cater for every taste, the pitches, the volleyball court, squash courts/quadrangles, enjoy them and while here join one or more of the many clubs/Associations/communities and societies on campus e.g. Cultural clubs/Associations, academic clubs/Associations, religious based associations and many others.

Please appreciate that extra-curricular opportunities are linked to high quality student engagement and success. We have reserved every Friday afternoon to evening on our timetables to facilitate these co-curricular engagements across all our campus

OUR COMMITMENT.

The University takes responsibility for students seriously. The wellbeing and safety of our students is central to our planning. We will be actively working with partnered organizations/companies and other key stakeholders to implement our plans and mission “To transform the lives of our students and communities through provision of essential and up-to-date market-oriented, Vocational, entrepreneurial, and management training.”  We encourage you to move with us through this journey towards making Metropolitan International University the best higher Institution of Learning worldwide!

And with this piece of information, I wish you every success at Metropolitan International University and I am confident that you will find it an immensely rewarding experience.

Empowerment through knowledge Creation! Cheers!!

Sincerely, Dean of Students

Anchoring Script for Parents’ Orientation Programme [With PDF]

This session will be focused on writing an anchoring script for the parents’ orientation program. So, without wasting any more time, let’s get started.

Feature image of Anchoring Script for Parents' Orientation Programme

Welcome Speech (For Educational Institutions)

Hello and warm good morning to all the parents and guardians present here with us today. On behalf of [school/college/institute name], I, [name], welcome you all to the parents’ orientation programme for the 2022-2023 session. To give you an overview of the programme, today we will be explaining to you our detailed plans for the upcoming session, the new technologies that will be introduced to the students and what you can do to help your kids with it.

We will have a brief Q&A session after that, where you can share your doubts, queries or questions and our teachers, as well as representatives from the management, will explain it to you. We will also have a one-to-one session between parents and teachers where you will be able to understand how your ward had been performing all this while and how our new plan will help them on an individual level.

Now, I would like to request our panel of teachers and management representatives to please come up on the stage and take their respective seats. Thank you. We will be commencing the programme soon.

Welcome Speech (For Non-educational Institutions)

Hello and good morning/afternoon/evening, everyone. On behalf of [institute name], I, [name], warmly welcome you all to the parents’ orientation programme for the 2022-2023 session. Today, we have here with us the parents and guardians of the students enrolled in our [dance/drama/singing/painting course name]. We invited you all to discuss the curriculum changes, new upgrades and the overall plan for the upcoming session. Before we begin, let me give you a brief outline of the programme today.

In the first half, our teachers and masters will be explaining to you the new plan for the upcoming session as well as the new technologies that will be introduced to your kids. In the second half, we will have a Q&A session where you can ask your questions and our teachers will clarify your doubts. In the end, for those who are interested, we will be having a direct parent-teacher meeting where you can discuss the progress your ward has made in the previous session.

Now, I would like to invite our teachers and masters to please take their respective seats. The parents’ orientation programme will commence soon. Thank you.

First Half of the Programme (For Educational Institutions)

Now, Ms [teacher’s name] from the science department will be explaining to us the detailed plan for the upcoming session. She will cover the general plans for theoretical as well as practical classes for physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology. She will also explain to us the new upgrades that the school/institute plans to implement in the physics and biology laboratories. I will now request Ms [teacher’s name] to continue. Thank you.

Thank you, Ms [teacher’s name]. Now, we will move on to the language and literature department. The school/institute is planning to make a few changes to the English literature syllabus. These changes are meant to help the students have a better grip on the subject. I would request Mr [teacher’s name] from the English department to please continue on this topic. Thank you.

Thank you, Mr [teacher’s name]. Last but not the least, I would request Mr [teacher’s name] from the social studies department to explain to us the department’s plan for the upcoming session. Thank you.

Dear parents and guardians, we will now take a break for 15 minutes. The second half of this meeting will commence at [time]. Thank you.

First Half of the Programme (For Non-educational Institutions)

Now, our Kathak master, Ms [name], will be explaining to us the detailed plan for the upcoming session. ABC dance academy is planning to introduce a few changes in the curriculum, including tests every 3 weeks. It will help the teachers understand how much progress a child has made and thus, help those who need more attention. I would now request Ms [name] to please come up to the podium and explain the plan in detail. Thank you.

Thank you, Ms [name]. Now, our Bharatnatyam master, Mr [name], will be explaining to us the plan for the upcoming session for Bharatnatyam students. Since most of the students are interested in taking part in the national Bharatnatyam competition, [competition name], which will be held early next year, our academy has planned to offer extra classes for the students on Saturdays. Mr [name] will now be explaining the plan in detail. Thank you.

Thank you, Mr [name]. Now, I would request our dance coordinator, Ms [name], to please come up to the podium and explain to us the other things planned for the upcoming session. Thank you.

Dear guardians, we will now take a break for 15 minutes. The second half of this meeting will commence at [time]. Thank you.

[In this section, we have used ‘ABC dance academy’ as an example of a non-educational institution. You may substitute it with any institution you wish.]

Second Half of the Programme (For Educational Institutions)

Hello and welcome back, everyone. Now, we will be holding a Q&A session. Dear guardians, if you have any questions, queries or suggestions, you may raise your hand. All the chairs have a microphone attached to the side. You may use it to voice your opinions. Our teachers and representatives from the management will try their best to clarify your doubts. Rest assured, if you have any suggestions, we will definitely consider them. Thank you. So, does anyone have any questions?

After the session:

Thank you, everyone. I hope our panel was able to clarify all your doubts. We are thankful for your valuable suggestions as well. Now we will move on to the next portion of this programme. To the parents who want to talk to the teachers about their children, we will be calling out the names. You may come and meet the teachers when your name is called. Thank you.

Second Half of the Programme (For Non-educational Institutions)

Hello everyone and welcome to the second half of the parents’ orientation programme. In the first half, our teachers explained to you the detailed plan for the upcoming 2022-2023 session. Now, we will be having a Q&A session.

We invite all the guardians who have queries, doubts or questions about whatever was discussed earlier to please raise their hands during the session and ask their questions. Our masters and teachers here will try their best to clarify your doubts. If you have any suggestions, please let us know as well. We will surely consider it. Thank you. So, does anyone have any queries?

Thank you, guardians. I hope our teachers were able to clarify all your doubts. We are thankful for your suggestions as well.

It is now time for us to move on to the next portion of this programme – the parent-teacher meeting. To the parents and guardians who want to talk to the teachers and masters about their wards, you may come and meet the teachers one by one. Thank you.

Ending Speech (For Both Educational and Non-educational Institutions)

Thank you, everyone. We have now come to the conclusion of the programme. I would like to thank all the parents and guardians who took the time out of their busy schedules to attend this meeting. As much as we boast of a brilliant panel of teachers and guides, we believe that having the guardians understand how we work with our students is very important.

It helps us build trust, and understand the special needs of our students (if any) and thus, helps them learn better. So, we truly appreciate your presence here and thank you for your time and support. I would also like to thank our teachers and staff members for helping us organise this meeting and making sure it went smoothly – Thank you!

Thank you, everyone! Have a good day/night!

Note: This is a sample script meant to provide you with a basic idea of how to write an anchoring script for a parents’ orientation program. Feel free to use this script and edit it as per your needs.

Welcome Speech to the Incoming Master's Candidates

  • Posted September 11, 2007

I am pleased to have the opportunity to talk with you today as you embark on what I hope will be an extraordinarily valuable set of experiences at HGSE.  My faculty colleagues and I will do our best to make this happen. I want to spend my time with you talking about teaching.  Since I have been at HGSE for a long time, I am frequently asked by new colleagues what they should do to teach well.  I want to share with you three pieces of advice I give to them. The first is that you cannot be too well organized.  I explain that HGSE students work hard and try to do what we as faculty ask of them.  However, they do this in at least four courses and often while juggling the demands of a part-time job and family.  Consequently, they need to be able to plan.  Knowing just what the assignments are, when they are due, which readings will be discussed on which day, and when exams will be given and in what format is critical to students’ efforts to manage complicated lives. I was reminded of this a number of years ago by a question a student named Molly posed to me on the first day of microeconomics class.  Molly had seen on the reading list that the final assignment was a take-home exam in the middle of January with a three-day turn-around.  She explained that a condition of the part-time job that kept her afloat financially was spending January in Katmandu, Nepal.  Molly wondered if she could take the exam there.  I asked her to find out whether Katmandu had web access and overnight mail service.  It turned out to have both.  So Molly downloaded the exam from the web, and send us her answers from Katmandu – and good answers they were.  My sense is that if the details of the final assignment had not been available to Molly on the first day of class, she would not have taken the course.  And, of course, I think everyone should learn how knowledge of economics can help them to pursue their career goals in education. My second piece of advice to new colleagues is that they should provide many different types of assessments.  The reason is that some students thrive on in-class exams; others on memos; others in class discussion; others on group presentations.  The more different types of assessments that are used in a class, the more likely it will be that each student can display her own form of excellence.  I was reminded of this a number of years ago when a student named Elaine took microeconomics with me.  One of the assignments each year is that every student be part of a group of four or five that prepares and presents in eight minutes the essential argument in one of the readings.  Most groups give Powerpoint presentations.  The paper Elaine’s group was assigned to present made the argument that most American high school students have only modest incentives to work hard in school.   Elaine decided to write a play that would convey the lessons of the article.  Elaine’s script was both powerful and hilarious. Under her direction, the acting was inspired.  Everyone in the class remembered poignantly the argument of this paper.  Perhaps more important, Elaine’s work reminded us all of the power of the arts – even in conveying lessons about economics – a field that the 19th century Historian Thomas Carlyle called “The Dismal Science.” My third piece of advice is to set high standards for the quality of work students should submit; provide clear feedback about the strengths and limitations of students’ work products, assign grades of B+ to work products that are solid responses to the assignment, and reserve grades higher than B+ for work that is truly distinguished.  I explain that I have two reasons for this advice on grading practices.  First, a challenge you all face as you prepare to build a career is to figure out something that you like to do AND that you are particularly good at doing.  Honest feedback about the quality of work you do in different classes is critical to helping you distinguish between things you are very good at doing and things you like to do but do not do especially well. (I have lots of things in that category.)  This distinction is critical to finding rewarding professional work in competitive job markets. The second reason for providing honest feedback on grades is to provide you with clear signals about what kind of a letter of recommendation you can expect.  If you earn a grade of A, I believe you have a right to expect a recommendation indicating that you did exceptionally fine work.  If a faculty member gives everyone in your class a grade of A, then he must fall into one of two traps.  Either he writes essentially the same recommendation for everyone, in which case the letter he writes for you is quite worthless.  Or he writes letters that distinguish between students in the quality of their work in ways that are not reflected in the grades he assigned.  This does not seem fair to the students who expect a very strong recommendation to follow a grade of A, but don’t get it. I am reminded of the grading and feedback and recommendation issues every year when we do doctoral admissions.  Over time, my colleagues and I on the admissions committee have learned that recommendations from different faculty mean different things.  We have learned to discount heavily letters from professor X at an institution I will not name.  Professor X has written recommendation letters for at least seven different applicants to our doctoral program in the last few years.  Every one of the seven or more letters stated that the applicant was one of the two best students Professor X had taught in the past decade.  You can see why we cannot give much weight to such letters. In contrast, we have learned that when Professor Y tells us that an applicant is really special, we should always take her.  We do this because the very few times Professor Y has made a similar glowing recommendation in the past, the students really have been extraordinary. So, in summary, my suggestions to my new colleagues are: organize well, provide a variety of opportunities for students to excel, and provide honest feedback. After reading the syllabi for the 20 new courses that my new colleagues are teaching this year, I have no doubt that they are finding effective ways to implement these suggestions.  You will be the beneficiaries of their efforts.  I hope you have a wonderful year with us on Appian Way.

International Wildcat Welcome rebrands, pushes for more funding, programming

Organizers+said+they+hope+International+Wildcat+Welcome%E2%80%99s+rebrand+will+create+a+more+seamless+transition+between+the+international+and+domestic+student+orientation+experiences.

Starting in September, International Student Orientation will go by a different name: International Wildcat Welcome.

The program’s student executive board members said they are optimistic the rebrand will bridge the gap between the international student orientation experience with that of domestic students.

SESP sophomore Sarah Norman said she and other International Wildcat Welcome executive board members were initially skeptical about the change because there wasn’t a strong relationship between Wildcat Welcome and ISO in the past.

“Some greater clarity has definitely come to light as to why that rebranding has taken place,” Norman said. “We’re hoping that the more that we brand it as one big event, the resources, attention and acknowledgement that Wildcat Welcome gets will also come to this international experience.”

International students arrive on campus a few days before Wildcat Welcome every September for orientation programming that helps them navigate immigration requirements, set up phone and bank accounts, and meet other international students.

Students involved in the program have criticized the University for providing ISO with fewer resources and assistance than Wildcat Welcome.

In previous years, international students have had to pay a $50-per-night early move-in fee for the duration of ISO — one that students on financial aid said they couldn’t waive. During the program’s annual trip to Chicago, students were also required to pay for their own meals and commute, according to Norman.

These barriers made ISO, a mandatory program for students on F-1 visas, feel like an afterthought to Wildcat Welcome, students said.

“The community is fantastic and they’re amazing,” Norman said. “It’s just that (International Wildcat Welcome) is organized solely by students … it doesn’t have all this fancy programming and speakers and the merch.”

One of the biggest challenges the program has faced is a lack of funding. International Wildcat Welcome is managed and funded by the Office of International Student and Scholar Services.

OISS — designated as a primarily academic office — is responsible for supporting international students throughout the year, leaving it with a smaller budget to allocate to orientation programming, International Wildcat Welcome team members said.

Wildcat Welcome, on the other hand, is organized by the Office of Student Transition Experiences, a department dedicated solely to orientation services.

Bienen and Weinberg junior Dami Akanni, an International Wildcat Welcome executive board member, said he hopes the rebrand draws more attention to the disparity between the two orientation experiences and paves the way for improvements.

“If they see that the branding of (International Wildcat Welcome) is also in the same likeness as Wildcat Welcome, but the quality isn’t on par, that could lead to some raised eyebrows,” Akanni said.

Deborah Cohen, the executive director of the Buffett Institute for Global Affairs, said the institute has been collaborating with the International Wildcat Welcome team to plan this year’s orientation programming.

Cohen said the rebrand intends to ensure closer collaboration between the teams behind Wildcat Welcome and International Wildcat Welcome, allowing for a more seamless transition between the two programs for international students.

“The change is to eliminate repetition, so students who have heard some of this information in International Wildcat Welcome won’t hear it a second time,” Cohen said. “And it’s to make clear that this is all part of one thing.”

The Buffett Institute — the umbrella organization that includes OISS — has expressed a willingness to make the program more accessible for low-income students, according to Communication junior and International Wildcat Welcome executive board member Juan Barrera Lopez.

“That means paying for housing, movers, helping with transportation and meals,” Barrera Lopez said. “Nothing is 100% secure, but it’s very evident that the leadership team in the Buffett Institute is looking to help us.”

Duke CNAP Welcomes First Speech-Language Pathologist

Profile photo of Shanika Phillips

Duke’s Cognitive Neuroscience Admitting Program (CNAP) is set to welcome its first speech-language pathologist as a doctoral student. Shanika Phillips Fullwood , a clinically certified SLP with over a decade of experience, will begin her studies in the fall of 2024.

Her enrollment reflects a promising shift toward innovative, interdisciplinary approaches in brain and language research.

Phillips Fullwood works at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro, treating adult patients who have neurogenic disorders, associated with stroke, traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord injury. She serves as the acute rehab neuroscience diagnostic specialist, a role that involves coordinating with physical therapists, occupational therapists, and SLPs to ensure the use of evidence-based practices.

In addition to her clinical work, she is an adjunct lecturer at her alma mater, Brooklyn College, CUNY, and she contributes to research on neurogenic communication disorders in the lab of Jamila Minga, PhD, CCC-SLP . Phillips Fullwood’s work in the lab includes training undergraduates in transcription checks for the Right-Hemisphere Brain Damage (RHD) Bank and participating in brain mapping studies to identify regions associated with specific deficits.

She’s also co-authoring manuscripts focused on the impact of culture on communication and the development of a diagnostic code for apragmatism, work that aligns with her research interests.

As a doctoral student, Phillips Fullwood plans to focus on the cognitive aspects of communication, particularly how right-hemisphere strokes affect language and communication abilities. Her interest in this area developed during her time as an SLP in Indiana, where she encountered a number of patients with right-hemisphere strokes who had trouble with communication.

These patients struggled to stay on topic and understand questions, even though their language center – which is typically associated with the left hemisphere – was not affected.

“I would bring up these concerns during our interdisciplinary team meetings to the physical medicine doctor, and the response often was, ‘Well, they didn't have a left-hemisphere stroke, they had a right-hemisphere stroke, so they shouldn't have communication difficulties,’” she said.

This led her to delve deeper into the research to understand whether these kinds of communication deficits have been documented in the literature.

“There was some evidence supporting that, but still, there's a bias toward the left hemisphere being the only hemisphere that's responsible for communication,” she said. “I thought, ‘Well, it's time for me to go back and do my PhD,’ which was always my goal.”

Known for its interdisciplinary approach, CNAP provides students with the opportunity to engage with faculty across multiple departments and fields at Duke, such as neurobiology, psychology, psychiatry, biomedical engineering, and philosophy .

Students undergo 18 months of coursework and laboratory rotations, gaining foundational knowledge in cognitive neuroscience. After that, they select a department and two advisors to guide their thesis research, furthering their specific interests through an affiliate graduate program or department.

“The fact that CNAP is so interdisciplinary was really attractive to me,” Phillips Fullwood said. “I felt that this program would serve me a lot better than a PhD in communication sciences because I'll be able to tap into some of the techniques they're using in neuroscience to get a better understanding of the communication piece.”

Her enrollment in CNAP demonstrates the interdisciplinary approach necessary for advancing the field of cognitive neuroscience. It also highlights the opportunity to integrate speech-language pathology into Duke's broader research and academic offerings. Currently, the school does not offer a training program for communication sciences and disorders at the master’s or doctoral level.

Through her work, Phillips Fullwood hopes to help bridge the gap between clinical speech-language pathology and cognitive neuroscience in treating patients with right-hemisphere strokes who have communication deficits.

“ I believe that we must have a good understanding of why this patient is doing what they're doing to inform how we evaluate and treat them,” she said. “ If we improve this piece, then we'll be able to help translate that into better diagnostic tools, better assessment methods, and better, more formal ways for treating this than we currently have.”
