Madam President: The Biography of Droupadi Murmu Paperback – October 5, 2023

Madam President is the first-ever comprehensive and authentic biography of Droupadi Murmu, the fifteenth President of India, by senior journalist Sandeep Sahu. Murmu's long and eventful political journey is a story of true perseverance and inspiration. Having battled early years of struggle in securing quality education, being struck by a series of personal tragedies such as the loss of her husband and two sons in quick succession, and suffering electoral victories and losses, Murmu has risen through her circumstances with grace, fortitude and resilience that make her the well-revered leader she is today. In this stellar biography, Sahu writes on Murmu's life's work, a journey that started as councillor in the Rairangpur civic body, having previously also served as Governor of Jharkhand, and reaching the Rashtrapati Bhavan. As the first Indian President from the tribal community, her phenomenal rise as an earnest and ambitious young woman, who would, with dedication and rigour, go on to become the most powerful woman in the country, presents a fascinating study of democratic empowerment in India.

Droupadi Murmu scripts history, becomes India’s 1st tribal president | Know her journey

Humble, affable, inspiring -- this is how those who know her describe India’s President-elect , Droupadi Murmu. The 64-year-old tribal leader from Odisha scripted history on Thursday when she was elected India's first Adivasi President, defeating the Opposition’s Yashwant Sinha with a lion’s share of votes.

Murmu will be the first President to be born after independence and also the youngest to occupy the top post. She is the second woman to become India’s First Citizen.

Born on June 20, 1958 to a Santhal family in Uperbeda village in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district, Murmu’s journey is an inspiring story of many firsts. She was the first girl in her village to go to college.

POLITICAL SUCCESS

It is from Rairangpur that she took her first step up the BJP ladder. She won an election to the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat in 1997, and served as councillor.

She was first elected to the Odisha assembly in 2000 and went on to become a minister of state (independent charge) for commerce and industry and the fisheries and animal resources development minister in the BJD-BJP coalition government. In 2004, she won a second term in the state assembly.

PERSONAL LOSS

In 2005, Murmu was not inducted into the cabinet in Odisha. She also faced consecutive defeats in the 2009 and 2014 assembly polls.

This phase of her life was marked by several tragic personal losses. Between 2009 and 2014, she lost three of her closest family members — her eldest son Laxman Murmu in 2009, her younger son Sippun Murmu in 2013, and then her husband Shyam Charan Murmu in 2014.

GOVERNOR OF JHARKHAND

In 2015, Murmu was appointed Governor of Jharkhand and stayed in the post till 2021. She was the first woman governor of the state.

As a Santhal leader and an inspirational figure for her community and for women in general, Murmu has always kept the tribal community’s interests at the forefront.

HER INTERESTS

Murmu is a keen practitioner of the meditation techniques of the Brahma Kumaris, a movement she embraced after she lost her husband, two sons, mother and brother in just six years between 2009-2015.

She is fluent in Santhali and Odia languages, and is an excellent orator.

She has a sweet tooth. Besides enjoying sweet treats on her own, she also often spoils people around her with chocolates and sweet. Droupadi Murmu takes oath as India’s first tribal president

Analysts said the move will likely help PM Narendra Modi extend his base among the tribal communities ahead of his re-election bid in 2024.

Droupadi Murmu

Droupadi Murmu has been sworn in as India’s president, making her the first person from one of the country’s marginalised tribal communities to serve as the head of state.

The former school teacher and state governor was elected to the largely ceremonial position last week with 64 percent of the vote by members of India’s parliament and state assemblies.

Murmu, who is from the Santhal tribe and was born in eastern Odisha state, paid her respects before her inauguration on Monday at a memorial dedicated to India’s independence icon Mahatma Gandhi in New Delhi.

“I started my life journey from a small tribal village,” Murmu, 64, said after taking the oath of office in parliament.

“From the background I come from, it was like a dream for me to even get elementary education,” she added.

“But despite many obstacles, my resolve remained strong and I became the first daughter from my village to go to college.”

Modi with Droupadi Murmu

Reporting from New Delhi, Al Jazeera’s Pavni Mittal called the occasion “historic and highly symbolic”.

“Since her election last week, there have been many celebrations in largely tribal belts across the country,” she said.

“This is being seen as a presidency that could inspire millions of people, that is women and people from the tribal communities to dream big and enter mainstream Indian politics.”

India’s prime minister wields executive power but the president can send back some parliamentary bills for reconsideration and also plays a guiding role in the process of forming governments.

Murmu is the country’s second female president after Pratibha Patil, who held the position for five years from 2007.

She succeeds Ram Nath Kovind, the second president from the Dalit community, which falls at the bottom of the Hindu caste system.

Droupadi Murmu,

Murmu’s win was considered a certainty because of the strength of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies in the parliament and state assemblies.

Analysts said the move will likely help Prime Minister Narendra Modi extend his base among the poor tribal communities ahead of his re-election bid in 2024.

Tribal communities make up some 8.6 percent of India’s 1.4 billion population and are often poor and marginalised.

“As far as the political impact is concerned, that could be limited because this is a largely ceremonial position. Political analysts say the BJP could score some brownie points, particularly in areas that do have a large tribal population but only to some extent,” Mittal said.

In her speech, Murmu said her election would give hope to the poor and downtrodden who have been left behind despite India’s recent economic growth.

“It is a matter of great satisfaction to me that those who have been deprived for centuries, who have been away from the benefits of development … are seeing their reflection in me,” she said.

New Delhi, Aug 2 (PTI) A biography of Droupadi Murmu, India’s youngest President and the first to be born after Independence, will hit the stands later this year, Penguin Random House India (PRHI) announced Tuesday.

Touted to be the first authentic and definitive account of India’s 15th President, “Madam President: A Biography of Draupadi Murmu” claims to unpack the many trials and tribulations, and early years of struggle that elevated the 64-year-old to the highest office in the country.

It is written by Bhubaneswar-based senior journalist Sandeep Sahu.

“What made the prospect of doing the book when Penguin India reached out to me was the fact that the book would be on the first tribal woman to become the President of India, which is truly historic,” Sahu said in a statement.

“That she belongs to the predominantly tribal Mayurbhanj district of Odisha, where I spent my entire adolescent period, was also another tempting factor to take it on,” he added.

Sworn in on July 25, President Murmu’s phenomenal rise from a sleepy village in Mayurbhanj to the Rashtrapati Bhavan presents a fascinating study of democratic empowerment in India.

She took her first steps in politics in Rairangpur where she was elected as BJP councillor in the Rairangpur Notified Area Council in 1997. She rose ministership in Odisha’s BJD-BJP coalition government from 2000 to 2004.

She was appointed as the governor of Jharkhand, and she stayed in this post till 2021.

With a stellar record as a legislator and with multiple awards for her work as legislator, minister, and governor, she has several firsts to her credit —  the first woman from her area to become a minister in the Odisha government and the first woman legislator to win the coveted Nilakantha Award as the ‘Best Legislator’ in Odisha Assembly, among others.

According to the publishers, Murmu’s story is a story of the “great democratic spirit of India”, which through this book, will reach diverse audiences influencing many to dream their dreams and realise it.

“This is the story of an inspirational woman, a tribal leader, who has been a Stateswoman with a solid political career behind her. Yet, we know little about her life. Her ascension to the national stage as a role model for all Indians, occupying the highest office in the country, is a powerful message for India’s tribal communities,” said Meru Gokhale, publisher, Penguin Press. Droupadi Murmu: India’s First Tribal President

She is 15th President of India and she expressed her words: “President is a constitutional position, and I will uphold its dignity and will stay away completely from politics and work for the people of the country”

Some struggle throughout their entire lives. Sometimes for the sake of others, and other times for their own interests. Such individuals provide an example for others by serving their families and society with such dedication and honesty, especially in the face of hardship. The persona of Droupadi Murmu is one example. One of the biggest tribal communities in India, the Santhal community, includes Ms. Murmu, who was born in the hamlet of Baidaposi in the Mayurbhanj District of Odisha in 1958. She attended the Ramadevi Women’s College in Bhubaneswar, the state capital, as the daughter of the head of the local council. She was a fantastic student since she was little and a devoted follower of Lord Shiva. She came from a ST family, endured numerous challenges, and finished her higher education.

Despite being from a tribal family and a backward place, her family members are well-educated and have a respectable standing in the village. Her grandfather and father headed the village. She had two sons and one daughter from her marriage to Shyam Charan Murmu. But her two sons passed away at a later age. Draupadi Murmu wed the financier Shyam Charan Murmu, who passed away in 2014. The couple had a daughter and two sons, both of whom passed away. In the course of four years, she lost her husband and her two sons, yet she never lost courage. She currently resides with Itishree Murmu, her only child. She forgot her own suffering by accepting that of others.

Droupadi Murmu and narendra modi

When Kartik Majhi, a minister in the Odisha government, was in the area when she was a child, her father took her to the nearby town of Rairangpur. She abruptly jumped onto the stage, showed the minister her diploma, and declared her desire to further her education in Bhubaneswar. The young girl’s passion so pleased the minister that he gave his staff the order to assist her in securing admission to a government school located in the state capital.

Ms. Murmu started her work with the Odisha government as a clerk and worked as a junior assistant in the department of energy and irrigation from 1979 to 1983. At her mother-in-law’s request, she left her job in Bhubaneswar and returned to Rairangpur to care for her family. She then started working as a teacher at the Sri Aurobindo Integral School. However, she declined to take a pay cheque. All the school paid for was her rickshaw fare. This is public service, not a job, she emphasized. She said that her husband’s pay as a bank officer was sufficient to meet the necessities of the family She gave her in-laws’ four acres of property so that a school could be built in honor of her late husband and kids.

When she was chosen as a councilor in the Rairangpur local elections in 1997, her political career officially began. She was frequently observed overseeing cleanliness operations in the town herself, standing in the sun as trash was removed and drains were cleaned. Ms. Murmu presided over the state arm of the BJP for “scheduled tribes”—tribal people identified by the Indian constitution as economically and socially marginalized—from 2006 to 2009. She was elected to the state assembly twice as a BJP member, from the Rairangpur constituency in 2000 and 2009. The Legislative Assembly of Orissa also gave Draupadi Murmu the Nilkantha Award for being the finest MLA. She served as a minister in the state’s coalition government from 2000 to 2004, which was headed by Biju Janata Dal leader Naveen Patnaik. She oversaw the portfolios for fisheries and animal resources after initially being in charge of trade and transportation. Murmu was chosen in 2015 to serve as Jharkhand’s first female governor. She will remain in that capacity until July 2021.

Droupadi Murmu

She has made headlines on other times for defying tradition, like as when she went to meet with the railway minister in Mayurbhanj, her home district, or when she paid Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik a visit at his residence. “Both instances were regarded as protocol violations. However, her political guru Rajkishore Das thinks she could not care less. The most noteworthy aspect of Ms. Murmu’s character, according to Mr. Das, “is her equanimity in both happy and sad times and her stoicism in the face of tragedy.” “The way she gathered herself and continued working for the people even after multiple tragedies in her family speaks volumes about her remarkable strength of character.”

“Droupadi Murmu Ji has dedicated her life to serving society and empowering the poor, downtrodden, as well as the marginalized,” stated Indian Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi . She had an amazing term as governor and has a wealth of administrative expertise. She will make an excellent president of our country, I’m sure of it. Millions of people find tremendous strength in the life of Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji, particularly those who have endured poverty and adversity. Her sensitivity and grasp of policy issues will be very beneficial to our nation. “I am especially happy as Murmu belongs to my Lok Sabha constituency and is also of my tribal community,” stated Union Minister of Tribal Affairs Bisheeswar Tudu.

Not only is her life in danger, but the Santhal tribal group in Jharkhand and Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district—where she was born—is also in danger. Families within the tribe are aware that it is a symbolic act for them. People in Uperbeda, Odisha, 280 kilometers from the state capital Bhubaneswar, were celebrating even before the vote count started. This isolated tribal community, where Murmu was born and raised, is today ecstatic and proud of “Odisha’s daughter.” A 13-year-old Surat girl studying in Class 8, Bhavika Maheshvari is a motivational speaker and author of a book on life lessons that may be gleaned from Draupadi Murmu.

She is now India’s first female tribal president and the country’s second female president overall (the first being Ms. Pratibha Patil). “President is a constitutional position, and I will uphold its dignity and will stay away completely from politics and work for the people of the country,” said the 15th President of India.

AI is helping lives, but moral conundrums must be resolved: Murmu at IIIT Lucknow

Speaking at the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIIT) Lucknow’s second convocation event, President Droupadi Murmu emphasized that India possesses the necessary 5Ds (demand, demography, democracy, desire, and dream) to become a developed country by 2047.

Droupadi Murmu latest nwes

President Droupadi Murmu stated on Tuesday that artificial intelligence (AI) is quickly becoming a vital tool in streamlining human life by bringing advancements in the areas of healthcare, education, agriculture, and infrastructure, among others. He emphasized the need to address the ethical conundrums arising from the use of AI.

Speaking at the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Lucknow’s second convocation event, the President emphasized that India possesses the necessary 5Ds—demand, demography, democracy, desire, and dream—to become a developed country by 2047.

As the main guest of the event, Murmu mentioned that the Center had issued the “National AI Strategy” in 2018 and that the Uttar Pradesh government had started initiatives to transform large cities into hubs for AI and IT. But she insisted that it was critical to address the moral conundrums raised by the application of AI, including the issue of automation-related unemployment, increased economic disparity, and human biases in AI results.

Every problem, according to her, should have an original solution. When combined with artificial intelligence, emotional intelligence must be seen as a tool, not a goal. The primary objective should be to enhance the quality of human life. She went on, “Every decision we make should benefit even the most marginalized people.”

By 2047, she continued, “our vision” was for India to be developed, and everyone should be involved in the process to fully contribute to the achievement of this objective.

Ten years ago, the Indian economy ranked eleventh globally. Our economy, however, is currently the fifth largest in the world and is projected to rise to the third rank by 2030. India is among the youngest countries in the world, with more than 55% of its population under 25 years old, the speaker continued.

She urged the deserving students to “take a pledge that those born after the country’s 100 years of Independence live in a prosperous India with inclusive development” as she awarded degrees and medals to the successful graduates.
