  • November 16, 2023

Regardless if you are new or experienced in doing online work, getting clients is always important to secure a stable livelihood. As a platform for getting clients, Filipinos have an advantage in using Onlinejobs.ph because the employers who post there prefer hiring Filipinos.

However, getting hired on Onlinejobs.ph or OLJ as it is popularly called, has its own nuances that might not be obvious to the applicant. It’s important to learn this so when you apply on Onlinejobs.ph, you can increase your chances of getting hired and maximize the use of your limited daily messages.

To have the highest chance of getting hired when you apply on Onlinejobs.ph, you have to:

Step 1: Know what value you can deliver to your clients

Step 2: make a shortlist of jobs that fit you, step 3: do research on your target client’s company, step 4: update your onlinejobs.ph profile based on your research, step 5: prepare your resume and portfolio for sending, step 6: send a message to your target clients, step 7: prepare for the interview or exam.

Before diving deeper, you need to learn about how Onlinejobs.ph works for employers.

Video Guide: How NOT to Apply on Onlinejobs.ph

What you need to know about applying to employers on onlinejobs.ph.

To understand the best way to apply on Onlinejobs.ph, you have to learn how their system works on the side of the employer.

First, you need to know that there are two categories of employers: 1) Free Users or employers that aren’t paying a subscription and 2) Paid Users or employers that are paying for a monthly subscription, either Pro or Premium.

  • All types of users can post jobs, but only Paid Users can reply to applications . OLJ did this to significantly decrease the number of scammers on the website.
  • Paid Users are highly likely to post legit jobs on Onlinejobs.ph compared to free users, since they paid for a subscription, and they have been verified by OLJ.
  • Once their subscription ends, paid users can stop their subscription and can no longer reply to applications.

How does this system affect you when you apply on Onlinejobs.ph? It means you should prioritize applying to online job posts from paid users . With that in mind, it’s time to learn the best ways to get hired on Onlinejobs.ph.

How to Apply on Onlinejobs.ph: 7-Step Job Application Sample

Before you even get to the ‘Job Application’ page on OLJ, you need to do a bit of self-evaluation to increase your chances of getting hired.

Usually, job applicants have a very ‘self-focused’ approach when applying on Onlinejobs.ph. These applicants have been taught to just write down their skills and experience. They think it’s enough if their application fits the job description, but that won’t work when trying to get an online job.

If that sounds like you, then you might have a hard time in successfully getting hired.  While this approach may have worked for traditional companies, it will be very hard to stand out online, especially in today’s competitive online job market.

The first thing you have to learn about applying on Onlinejobs.ph is that it’s NOT a lottery, it’s a matching game.

For example, when clients say they are looking for an SEO writer, they don’t really just want someone who can write and follow instructions. They “ need” someone who can help them reach a goal, such as ranking first on Google.

This “need” is what you need to match when you apply on Onlinejobs.ph.

Whatever your profession is, you have to know exactly what value you can deliver to your clients that they would be willing to pay for. As long as you communicate that up front in your profile or messages, then you can stand out from the competition.

How do I know what value clients want?

You can do this by searching through job postings for the position on job platforms such as Onlinejobs.ph. If you already have a target client in mind, you can also go to the forums and social media pages they join to learn about common problems in their industry.

What if I can’t provide that value?

Don’t rush. You can build your skills first through upskilling platforms such as Skillshare, where there are free and paid options. You can also watch instructional videos on Youtube and apply what you've learned to slowly build your skills.

What if I don’t have any experience yet?

You can always build your portfolio outside of work situations. For example, if you are an aspiring freelance SEO writer, then you can write 2 to 6 articles to start with. You can even browse through job posts to see what topics are popular.

To showcase that you know what you are doing, you can even explain your process. For the SEO writing example, you can explain what keyword you are targeting and how the article answers that keyword.

You can apply the same to other professions. If you’re a logo designer, make sample logos and explain the process of what makes the logo a perfect fit for a business concept. If you’re a landing page developer, make sample landing pages and explain why these pages will help clients convert visitors into paying clients.

There will always be a ‘value’ that is needed by clients. It’s up to you to find out what that is for your industry. And do whatever you have to do, whether it be to upskill or to build your portfolio, in order to communicate confidently that you can deliver that value to your potential clients.

Armed with the ‘value’ that you can deliver, you can now browse through OLJ’s job board with a clear purpose: “To find clients that need that value from you”.

Remember to prioritize paid users. You can usually distinguish them because they have complete details and a business logo. You can also visit OLJ’s employer search page and input the employer or company name. The page will tell you if the employer is a paid user or not.

It’s okay to apply to some free users  on Onlinejobs.ph but keep your expectations low. Make sure to save the links to each of the job posts you’ve shortlisted so you can go back to them easily later.

You can check the article “ Find Part-Time Jobs on Onlinejobs.ph: Easy 6 Step Guide ” for search keyword ideas. However, more often than not, the search terms will probably be industry-specific so it’s up to you to find out what those search terms are.

Aside from job posts, you can better understand your client’s needs by researching them outside of Onlinejobs.ph. You can check their website and social media pages if there are any.  This is also a healthy habit to have if you want to   avoid online job scams .

You can use any information you find about the client later to write a personalized message when you apply on Onlinejobs.ph.

For example, let’s say you want to apply as a social media manager. One of the places you should definitely research is the employer’s Facebook, Instagram, and other pages.

Let’s take the Remote Filipino Worker’s Facebook page as a sample. You’ll see that the number of likes isn’t very high. The engagement isn’t that good in their posts as well.

As a social media manager, you can mention your observations and other stuff you’ve researched in your message on Onlinejobs.ph. You can then tell the potential employer that they can hire you to help them meet their objective.

So, by doing your research, you now have a very targeted message that will increase your chances of getting hired.

Once you have a better idea of the needs of your target clients, you can now customize your OLJ profile so that you can match their requirements. This is a very crucial step to get hired on Onlinejobs.ph.

For a detailed guide on updating your Onlinejobs.ph profile, please see “ How to Make a Winning Profile on Onlinejobs.ph in 9 Steps .”

Aside from your Onlinejobs.ph profile, you also need to customize your resume and portfolio based on what you’ve learned about your client.

For example, if you are a freelance writer and you have a client that is a blog site owner, you can check what kinds of articles are on their website. Next, hand-pick some articles from your portfolio that will match the style or topic of their articles.

You can even create a pdf portfolio that mentions that you specifically made a curated showcase just for them. This will help you stand out from the rest of the competition.

Once your resume and portfolio are ready, you need to prepare them for sending by uploading a pdf version of them into one of the free cloud storage services available.

If you are unfamiliar with using a cloud storage service to send files, please see the article “ How to Attach Files on Onlinejobs.ph: 4 Easy Steps ” for a detailed guide.

Alternatively, if you have your own website that showcases your work, you can simply share that link with your target clients.

To send a message to your target client, you need to go to their job post and click the ‘Apply for this Job’ button.

After clicking on the button, you’ll be taken to a page similar to below where you can type in a message for your target client.

hired clients onlinejobs.ph olj 4b - message sample

There’s no single message template that can get you clients with a 100% success rate. However, shown above is an Onlinejobs.ph job application sample that you can follow to make an impactful message to your potential clients or employers.

This example of an appealing Onlinejobs.ph message can be broken down into 3 important parts. Namely:

  • First, you need to highlight what ‘value’ they get from you in the subject of the message.
  • Second, add a personalized introduction using the name of the job poster plus information from their website.
  • Finally, add a link to a custom portfolio or resume that showcases the ‘value’ you can deliver to the client.

When crafting a custom message for your client, just remember that it’s not about you, it’s about them. It’s more important to send a well-matched application than a rushed insincere one.

The next thing you have to consider is how many Apply Points you will be using. You can indicate the amount in the textbox as illustrated below.

what are apply points on onlinejobs.ph olj 2a

Apply Points are used on OLJ to indicate how serious you are in your job application. You earn 10 points a day and can hold up to a maximum of 60. The higher the points you send with your application, the more likely is will be visible to your potential employer.

For the best methods on how to use Apply Points, please see” What Are Apply Points on Onlinejobs.ph? Complete Guide .”

Other Reminders:

  • Read the job post carefully before sending a message. Sometimes, they may require you to follow a specific format just so they know that you’ve properly read their post.
  • They may also require special files, such as a video resume, as part of the message you send them.
  • The client may also require you to fill up a form through an external link. Make sure to complete this first and send a confirmation to them as part of your message.
  • Don’t forget to add the links to your resume or portfolio. This is especially important if you are applying to free users who cannot reply to you until they subscribe to OLJ.
  • Lastly, proofread your message to avoid any embarrassing mistakes. Triple check the name since it’s the one that’s most important to get correct. You can then check for grammar or spelling errors through a free browser plugin like Grammarly .

After getting a reply, what you need to do next is to prepare for the interview or exam. Every client has their own hiring process, so make sure to follow their instructions carefully so you don’t disqualify yourself.

Pro Tip:  Test your webcam and mic before your interview to increase your chances of getting hired. Also, try to reduce the noise in your video call by using noise-cancelling equipment , such as the Logitech H340 noise-canceling headset.

A pleasant conversation with you can mean the difference between you getting hired over your competition. So, get every advantage you can get. This is especially important for voice-heavy jobs such as virtual assistants and cold callers.

If you also find that your webcam is lacking, there are many cheap, but decent options on online marketplaces . Though if your budget is tight, you can use your phone as a webcam instead.

best noise cancelling headsets philippines 24 (logitech h340)

Regardless if there’s an interview or not, you have to make sure that when you get hired, all of the job’s arrangements are clear to both parties, you and your client.

Here are some questions you should always ask your client:

  • What is the rate? How will you get paid?
  • What are the tasks involved in the job?
  • What tools or training are provided to complete the tasks properly?
  • What are their expectations regarding the results of the tasks?
  • How will the results be evaluated? Is there a feedback system in place?
  • What is the working schedule?
  • Will there be an onboarding process?
  • What will be the regular channel of communication?
  • What is the client’s management style?

While it’s important to match your client’s needs, you also have to remember that they need to match yours as well. Ultimately, it will be up to you if you will accept the job or not, so make sure not to shy away from asking as many relevant questions as you can.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do i send a job application on onlinejobs.ph.

You must view the details of a job posting before you can send a job application on Onlinejobs.ph. At the top of every job post page, you will find the ‘Apply for This Job’ button. Just click on this button and it will take you to the page where you can send a message to the hiring company.

What do I put as a subject on an Onlinejobs.ph message?

The subject is the first thing that your potential employer or client will see when they get a message from you on Onlinejobs.ph. If you’ve done your research beforehand, you should already know what value clients are looking for when they put up a job posting.  So, as clearly as you can, tell them what value they can get when they hire you.

Here are some sample subjects you can use on Onlinejobs.ph for different professions:

1) SEO Writer – I can get your blog to the first page of Google

2) Social Media Graphic Designer – Helping you reconnect with your community

3) Virtual Assistant – Leave the admin tasks to me so you can focus on what’s important

4) Video Editor – Quality editing that gets you more views and followers

5) Cold Caller – Fluent & persuasive cold caller who can get you more sales

Of course, these are only examples of subjects that you can use for an Onlinejobs.ph message. You still have to customize them based on the research you’ve done on the client, as well as, the results you can deliver through your work.

I'm a student without any work experience. What do I do to improve my chances of getting hired?

Improving your chances of getting hired as a student with no work experience can be challenging, but it’s certainly possible. There are certain techniques or ‘diskarte’ that you can use since you don’t have any experience yet.

This includes using the ‘show, not tell’ technique to appeal to employers without the need to show your resume. For more details on this technique and other practical tips, you can check out “ Onlinejobs.ph for Students: Get Hired with No Experience “.

What should I do if I get ghosted or my application gets rejected?

Even the best-crafted applications can get ghosted or rejected.  It’s a normal occurrence when you apply on Onlinejobs.ph or through other job platforms.

Sometimes it’s due to other factors, but most of the time you just don’t match with the client. When you get ghosted, you get no feedback at all so it’s important to just shake it off and move on.

When you get rejected, you might have a chance to get actual feedback. Try to get that valuable information as much as you can so that you can adjust your future applications as necessary. “Take no as a REDIRECTION, not a rejection.”

After getting my first client, how do I get more clients?

Getting hired on Onlinejobs.ph is just the first step to a stable online career. That’s why you have to work with the mindset that your current clients will lead to more clients.

For example, if your project with them is done, you can ask them to recommend people that they might know who would require your services. Network as much as possible and always part with your clients on good terms.

You should also look for clients outside of Onlinejobs.ph . There are many alternatives to OLJ and you don’t want to be limited to just one platform. Getting clients is an especially important skill you need to learn if you plan to make freelancing as a career.

Next, always allot time to learn new skills that people would be willing to pay for. The skills you need to learn are different depending on your industry, so just do your research and ask around.

Lastly, don’t forget to invest in work-from-home equipment that keeps you from getting any health problems. Remember – it’s pointless to earn that online job money when it’s all going to your hospital fees!

One we particularly recommend is an ergonomic chair . The one we use, the Sihoo M57 , is great for preventing back pain but it’s pretty expensive. It’s something we got after a few months of working but definitely worth the investment.

Since you’re just starting out, something like a laptop stand will be really helpful for your health. But not expensive enough to break the bank.

What's are the best payment methods on Onlinejobs.ph?

Since Onlinejobs.ph does not have a built-in payment system within their platform, you can choose anything you want that is available on the web. The choices can get overwhelming fast.

For the best payment platforms for Filipinos, please see the article “ How to Withdraw Your Money from Onlinejobs.ph to Your Bank “.

How To Write a Cover Letter That Will Get You Interviews

How To Write a Cover Letter That Will Get You Interviews

Although it’s not always required in job applications, a cover letter is a great way to boost your chance of being shortlisted for an interview.

A cover letter complements a resume by adding a personal touch to it, as the latter is written in a formal, more detached tone. Together, these documents prove your qualifications for the position.

Here’s everything you need to know about how to write an effective cover letter.

Go back to the main article: How to Write a Resume in the Philippines (with Samples, Formats, and Templates)

What Is a Cover Letter?

A cover letter is a short document that explains why you’re the perfect candidate for the job. It’s your direct message to the employer, allowing you to expand on your resume.

This document usually consists of about 300 to 500 words in three to four paragraphs . Unlike a resume, your cover letter must be written in the first-person point of view (with pronouns “I,” “me,” “we,” and “us”). This document is formatted like any letter with a salutation, body, and closing.

How To Write a Cover Letter: 5 Steps

1. research the company.

Employers consider not only qualifications but also culture fit when hiring people.

What does culture fit mean? You’re a good culture fit if your values and attitudes are aligned with the organization’s core values.

If you’re a good match for the corporate culture, you can perform your job well and have a thriving career with the company. Your cover letter should prove that. To achieve it, get to know the company better.

Check out the company’s website and social media accounts. Look for the core values and mission statement on the About page. View the Careers or Hiring page as well. These are good places to find information on the kind of people the company is looking to hire.

Also, get a feel for the tone of the company’s online content, whether it’s serious and formal, fun and quirky, or a mix of both. This will give you an idea of the right tone to use in your cover letter.

It helps to know the current challenges of the company, too. You can mention in your cover letter how your experience or skills can address them. Find the information by searching the company on Google and reading news reports and case studies about your potential employer.

2. Address your cover letter properly

Generic salutations such as “To Whom It May Concern” and “Dear Sir/Madam” may work for other letter types, but certainly not for a cover letter. Using one of them gives the impression that you didn’t bother to find out whom you should address the letter to.

There are many ways to know the hiring manager’s name. It’s usually specified in the job advertisement. If someone referred you to the company, you can ask that person about it. You may also check the company’s website, Facebook page, or LinkedIn profile for the name of the department head who’s screening candidates for the position.

Still couldn’t find the information? Contact the company’s HR department to get the right name.

3. Write a strong opening statement

Begin the body of your letter with an interesting statement, not a snooze-inducing one.

Writing “I’m writing to apply for [position name] that I saw in [the place where the job ad is posted]” is boring and a waste of the recruiter’s time.

Start strong instead. Introduce yourself briefly and state why you’re excited to work for the company.

Here’s an example: “I’m a digital marketing professional who has helped several startups grow. I’d be thrilled to bring my expertise and over X years of experience to your team.”

That’s just one way to start your cover letter. Depending on your personality and that of the company, your opening statement can be results-oriented, witty, or even brutally honest (but still professional).

Do you know a friend who works in the company? Or have a personal connection with the company (e.g., you’re a long-time customer, a former scholar of the company, etc.)? You can also mention such interesting tidbits within your first two sentences.

4. State why you want the position and why you’re the right fit

After your opening statement, go straight to explaining why you’re the best person for the job.

This part of your cover letter should answer these crucial questions:

  • How is your experience relevant to the role?
  • Why do you want to work for the company?
  • Why should you be hired?

To substantiate your answers, check the job posting and review the job requirements. Choose the top three requirements and briefly explain how you can meet each of them.

For example, if the job requires technical SEO skills, mention how you excelled in conducting website audits in the past.

5. End with a call to action

Wrap up your cover letter and thank the recruiter for taking the time to consider your application. Then mention your availability for an interview and how you can be reached.

Finally, end the letter with a simple and formal closing, such as “Regards,” “Sincerely,” or “Thank you.”

3 Tips To Get Clients On Onlinejobs.ph

3 Tips To Get Clients On Onlinejobs.ph

The most difficult part of being a freelancer is actually getting clients. When you are a beginner, it can be hard to convince clients of your skills and capabilities when you don’t have any experience yet. For this article, I will share with you three tips that I personally use that led me to land freelancing contracts even though I was a beginner then.

The primary platform I use is onlinejobs.ph . This is because it is free to register. Secondly, new job opportunities are being posted daily. Third, the daily limit of ten applications per day is more than enough! I only use up to three applications in a day. Lastly and the most important one, the platform does not deduct any percentage or commission from your salary. Yay!!

Let’s jump in on my tips!

Tip#1: Optimize Your Profile

Never rush to look for a job! The key to landing a contract is first making sure that your profile is attractive. Therefore, take your time to fill in all the details, do not take this step for granted! You can ensure that you have been able to optimize your profile when you have accomplished the following:

  • Completely fill out all your personal details – make sure to input your educational attainment, salary expectations, as well as a catchy profile description.
  • Verify your account – Provide all the documentary requirements such as valid ID, proof of address, and mobile verification in order to increase your ID Proof Points. Some job openings requirea much higher ID proof score and if yours don’t measure up, then you can’t apply.

What are ID Proof Points?

ID Proof Points are accumulated points based on the proof of documentary proofs you have submitted. Each document has a corresponding point equivalent. The more you submit, the higher your points are. The higher your points are, the more jobs become available for you to apply.

  • Take all the tests – there are three tests that you can integrate with your profile. The IQ Test, the English proficiency test and the DISC test. Each test does not take more that 30 minutes so make sure to accomplish each and upload a screen shot of the result on your profile.

When you’re done, it should look like this:

  • List all your skills – Onlinejobs.ph showcases your skills together with your profile. Make sure to highlight your best skills possible. Do not lazily do this. Make sure to take your time. Mine looks something like this:

Tip#2: Write A Proper Job Application Letter

I follow a standard four-paragraph format when sending a job application on onlinejobs.ph. When I started doing this rather than copy-pasting or writing anything I want, I noticed that I started to get responses from clients. In following my four-paragraph format , you should be able to answer the following questions:

  • Why are you sending an email? – Cite your purpose
  • Why are you the best fit for the position? – Cite past work experience or other relevant experiences
  • Why should the client choose you? – Cite your skills
  • What are your rates and when can you start? – Set expectations

In following the above-mentioned questions, your job application letter may look like this:

Dear [employer name], My name is [your name] and I am writing to apply as a [position]. I believe that I am the best fit for the position because [cite experiences] You should consider my application because I am skilled in [cite your skills] I can work for [hours] per week and my rate is [rate]. If you choose me, I can work [how soon can you work?] Thank you so much for this opportunity. Sincerely yours, [Your Name}

Take note that there are two cases over which my four-paragraph format does not apply:

  • When the employer provides a specific format and questions to answer in sending an application letter
  • When the employer provides an external link to apply

In the two above-mentioned cases, you must strictly follow what the job post requires. Always remember that following instruction is the first stage of a client’s vetting process of whether or not you will be shortlisted or not.

Tip#3: Have The Right Mindset

You have to understand that you have to go through a lot of “NOs” before you get your YESses. This is the reality of finding a client, it will be unfair if you expect to land a contract every time you send an application letter – that is just pure unrealistic.

Sometimes, clients on onlinejobs.ph only actually have an account under a free plan. This means that they don’t have access to the platform’s premium features like replying to job applications and hiring a freelancer. In this case, it’s not you, it’s them.

Believe me when I say that I’ve been there. I have also been the person who feels so upset and suicidal if I don’t hear back or get rejection emails instead. But when I realized how much clients are actually out there looking for VAs, my eye was opened that it’s not me who needs them….it’s them who needs me! With everything that I have to offer, it takes a lot of NOs to find that special client that best fits me. Despite everything that I’ve discussed and mentioned above, ultimately, what you have to learn is to take a “NO” as a redirection rather than a rejection. This way, you’ll spare yourself with a lot of disappointment.

The moment that you become desperate, that’s when you lose your leverage. If some mediocre job offer comes along, then you would say yes even though you don’t agree to some of the terms all because you are desperate to find a job! Therefore, the best thing to do is stand your ground, accept NOs, move on, and try again! A clear mind and knowing what you really want will help you land your dream job soon!

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. It motivates me to try new things. I’ve been hesitant to apply as a VA because I don’t have any experience regarding this field. I already have my acct on onlinejobs.com but I don’t verified it because I am afraid of rejection. Introduction

A covering letter for a CV is a one-page note, like an introductory message introducing the candidate to the employer. It is like a full-fledged advertising campaign to grab eyeballs by highlighting your best qualities and abilities required for the job. The primary purpose of a cover letter is to impress the reader with the skills mentioned and bag an interview.

Writing a cover letter is an art that every candidate must master to edge over their competitors. Writing a customized and targeted cover letter for CV will increase your chances of getting a response from the employer. Here is a guide with 12 cover letter examples for you to enhance your chances of getting shortlisted among thousands of applicants. This guide will help you brush up on your cover letter writing skills and craft the best cover letter for your CV.

Contents of a cover letter

Creating anything is an art, and so is crafting a cover letter. You will hold yourself in good stead if you make calculated use of structure. The structure will not only provide aesthetic merit to your cover letter but will also make it perspicuous. Usually, a cover letter for CV is written in five parts. Follow the below-mentioned steps to know the mechanics of a winning cover letter:

The idea behind writing a cover letter for CV is to grab the employer’s attention towards you. It’s aimed at generating interest from the hiring manager. So if you go in with a cliché respected sir/ma’am, the entire purpose of writing a cover letter is lost. So get a name, any name by hook or by crook. It’s always better to address the letter to a person than the typical “to whom it may concern.”

  • The opening paragraph

The opening paragraph provides your introduction along with the information regarding the position you are applying for. You should also add your competencies and strengths that will make you a suitable candidate for the job.

For example,

“I am excited to be applying for the post of (name of the post) with (name of company). The enclosed resume will help you learn how I transformed an under-performing and took it to new heights. With the help of my creative ability and critical thinking skills, I managed to increase productivity and sales by 25% substantially. I know I can put my skills to best use in facilitating the company’s sustained growth.”

  • The paragraph of hook

As the name suggests, this paragraph is targeted to get the reader hooked to reading your CV. This paragraph should further highlight the achievements that you have mentioned in your CV. A cover letter for CV is an extension of your resume. It should add to the points by highlighting your strengths and abilities further. You can also use bullets to give it a more clean look.

  • The paragraph of knowledge

This paragraph is mainly to show the interviewer about your knowledge of the company. It is primarily to show that you have researched well and did your homework before applying for the post. Demonstrate the knowledge that you have gathered from your research that prompted you to write.

For example

“After some research, I learned about the (name of institution) goal of promoting and implementing comprehensive education where students from a diverse diaspora can learn and grow together. Your recent step in reserving some seats and providing free enrolment to the bright students from marginalized sections is praiseworthy. Given my experience in comprehensive education in an urban setting as well as semi-urban will help you quickly achieve your goals.”

  • The closing paragraph

The closing paragraph is all about summarising. Summarise your qualities by mentioning what you can offer the company and close by suggesting that you look forward to a meeting. You can also choose to indicate that you’d follow up with a call in a certain number of days and make sure to call after those many days.

Okay, now we have discussed all the essential parts of any cover letter for CV. Of course, a different salutation will draw the reader’s attention, but a solid and catchy introduction will intrigue the interviewer. He’d like to know more about you as he reads further, and with a reliable and confident closing, he’d be interested in learning more about you in person.

Cover letter writing guide

The covering letter for CV helps the candidate introduce himself personally yet memorable to the employer. A well-tailored cover letter covers and expands on all the important points mentioned in your resume. It also provides contexts for your previous posts, responsibilities, and achievements and explains your enthusiasm for joining the company.

Planning goes a long way in the accomplishment of your goals. A good planner has high rates of success. Hence, it’s better and even advisable that you put some time and thoughts into planning your cover letter for CV to demonstrate and highlight your most authentic self and yet pique an employer’s interest.

Your cover letter should tell your story in a clear, concise way. It should highlight instances from your professional life to show how you can add value and help the company achieve its goals. Research shows that three things must be included in your CV. These three things are:

  • how your experience aligns with the job requirements
  • how your skills match desired skill set for the post
  • your reasons to choose to work with the company

Provide all this information to convince the reader that you are the right person for the job. Then, follow the below-mentioned tips to learn how you can incorporate these three things in your CV.

  • Pick the right tone

Your tone may break or make your way to the company. Be yourself but be on the safer side; always research the company to get an idea of the tone you want to use. The tone of your cover letter may differ significantly on the company and industry you are applying for.

  • Give a visual format

Craft your covering letter for CV with a unique visual format. This will help you stand out from other candidates in a positive way. Ensure that the format you are using is appropriate for the company and industry you are applying for.

  • Address the recruiter by name

Most people address the recruiter as “dear sir/madam” or “to whom it may concern.” Spend some time researching who you are managing to be. You may have to make a few phone calls and try different ways and methods to get the name right, and even if you don’t get the right word, it’s still going to be better than addressing using one of those cliché phrases.

  • Show your problem solving ability

Please read the job description and requirements thoroughly and compare your skills with them. Then, spend some time brainstorming which competencies you want to share and what experiences you want to highlight. For example, saying you are a problem solver will not be as helpful as demonstrating how you employ those problem-solving skills with the help of a model. You can also outline how you can help solve a problem that the company is currently facing.

A good story is pleasant to everyone’s ears, and hiring managers and recruiters are no exception to this. To make your cover letter memorable, add specific and compelling stories for your professional life. Ensure that the stories you choose to tell align with the job requirements, i.e., they demonstrate specific skills, tools, and concepts required for the job.

Your dishonesty on your cover letter for CV will cost you your credibility and reliability at the very first stage. It isn’t in your best interest. Stating and highlighting a skill that you don’t possess is going to come back and bite you.

  • Be different

You must stand out when you are applying for a post where a thousand others will be applying. Using a cover letter template doesn’t mean you copy the exact words and phrases. Hiring managers won’t be interested in reading the same thing over and over again, and your resume may get rejected after the first few lines. Hence, even though you choose to use a cover letter template, try to make it your own by incorporating phrases and descriptive words that suit your personality.

Here are some phrases that annoy recruiters that you might want to avoid:

  • To whom it may concern
  • I’m not sure if you know
  • Please feel free
  • Significant
  • Detail-oriented
  • Self-starter
  • Forward-thinker etc
  • Be specific

Now, your covering letter for CV is not a story being sent out for a writing competition. Hence, you don’t need to use flowery language and write to the point. Be succinct. No need to include irrelevant information in your cover letter for your CV. Such things can bore and cause the reader to miss essential points on your CV.

  • A proper call to action

A good call to action must be polite and open-ended. It suggests that you are excited to face them and offer more information regarding yourself (given that they are also interested in knowing more about you). It also gives the recruiter a reason to contact you.

Sentences like “I’ll call to schedule an interview.” cross a boundary and won’t go positively in your favor. Instead, use “I’ll follow up with a call after a week to know about the progress of my resume.”

Proofread your cover letter for any mistakes and grammatical errors. Proofreading also includes omitting irrelevant and adding relevant information instead.

  • Use a template

It’s a good idea to use a cover letter template if you’re starting anew and especially if you have used one for your resume as well. A template gives structure and cleanness to your cover letter for CV.

Cover letter examples

Now that we have discussed what goes into a covering letter for CV and craft the best cover letter . Here is a list of common cover letter examples and cover letter templates that can come in handy when you sit to craft your cover letter.
