The interior of the building is mainly divided into four parts, which are: the Diwan-i-Am, which means the Hall of Audience; the Diwan-i-Khass, popularly known as the ´Hall of Private Audience’; the Tasbih-Khana, also called the ´Chamber for beads for private prayers; and the Hammam, or ´The Bath.´ The lower part of the corridors connected to the bath has beautiful floral decorations of Parchin kari, and the upper part is painted golden in colour.

The Red Fort is a historical monument in India. Apart from its beautiful construction, the fort has importance in the history of independence. Have you ever wondered why the Prime Minister of India addresses the nation from the magnificent red-coloured stone building?

The rebellion history of India started in the year 1857, which is often called the Indian Rebellion of 1857 or the Sepoy Mutiny. The reasons that led to the First War of Independence by the sepoys were based on several reasons, such as political dissatisfaction among the Indian soldiers and racism or racial discrimination among Indians. Among the reasons, the main cause was believed to be the introduction of new rifle cartridges that were greased with cow and pig fat. As the sepoys had to bite the cartilage before loading it into the rifle, this hurt the religious factors of Hindu and Muslim soldiers in the British Army.

It was on May 10, 1857, when the revolt started in Meerut and quickly spread to Delhi. Bahadur Shah II also participated and became the leader of the rebellion. The rebels, who were sepoys and civilians, on the issue of a proclamation by their reluctant leader for unity against the British, marched towards the Red Fort and turned the building into a centre of resistance during the rebellion.

Unfortunately, the British recaptured Delhi in September 1857. Out of revenge, the Britishers destroyed three-fourths of Red Fort and Delhi. Not only was the building destroyed, but it was also looted, stripped of valuables, and disfigured. The motive behind all this destruction was to showcase the dominance of the British and British Raj towards the people of India afterwards.

All these ghastly acts of the Britishers filled the Indians with rage, which was later followed by many movements and violent revolts against the rule of the British government. Over the years, Red Fort, which once stood as a belief in India’s rich history, was restored, and on August 15, 1947, when Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the Indian National Flag on Red Fort to shatter the symbol of imperial dominance.

500 Words Essay on Red Fort

The Red Fort, a historical monument located in the heart of Delhi, India, stands as a testament to the architectural grandeur of the Mughal era. This magnificent fort, constructed by the fifth Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan, in 1638, is a symbol of India’s rich history and heritage.

Architectural Brilliance

The Red Fort, named for its massive enclosing walls of red sandstone, covers an area of about 254.67 acres. The fort’s layout reflects a fusion of Persian, Timurid, and Hindu traditions, embodying the peak of Mughal architectural innovation. The fort’s main structures include the Lahori Gate, the Delhi Gate, the Water Gate, the Chatta Chowk, and the Naubat Khana.

The Lahori Gate, the main entrance, leads to a long covered bazaar, the Chatta Chowk. Following this, the Naubat Khana or Drum House, where musicians played for the emperor, marks the entry to the main palace area. The Diwan-i-Aam (hall of public audience) and Diwan-i-Khas (hall of private audience) are noteworthy for their ornate architectural details.

The Red Fort has been a symbol of power and political focal point throughout its history. It was the residence of the Mughal emperors for nearly 200 years until 1857. Post-independence, the Indian government uses the fort as a site for the Prime Minister’s annual Independence Day speech. This continuous usage underscores its enduring significance in the country’s socio-political landscape.

Cultural Value

The Red Fort is not just an architectural marvel but also a cultural hub. The fort houses several museums, including the Indian War Memorial Museum and the Archaeological Museum, providing a glimpse into India’s diverse cultural and historical tapestry. The evening sound and light show is a popular attraction, narrating the Mughal history associated with the fort.

Preservation Efforts

Recognizing its historical and cultural importance, UNESCO declared the Red Fort a World Heritage Site in 2007. However, the fort has suffered damage due to natural aging, pollution, and human neglect. Preservation efforts have been undertaken by the Archaeological Survey of India to restore the fort’s original grandeur. These include structural repairs, chemical cleaning, and the development of a comprehensive site management plan.

The Red Fort, with its architectural splendor and historical significance, offers a window into India’s past. It stands as a symbol of the country’s resilience and cultural diversity. Despite the challenges it faces, the fort remains a living testament to India’s rich heritage, a beacon for preservation efforts, and a source of national pride. Its enduring relevance underscores the need for continued efforts to ensure its preservation for future generations. The fort’s story, etched in its red sandstone walls, continues to inspire and educate, embodying India’s historical journey and its stride towards the future.

Long and Short Essay on Red Fort

Red fort, also popularly known as Lal Quila, was constructed by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century. The construction happened when the emperor decided to shift the capital from Agra to the new city of Delhi, which was earlier known as Shahjahanabad. Here in this essay, we will discuss a few aspects associated with the structure of the Red Fort.

Long Essay on Red Fort in English for Students

Red Fort was designed by the architect Ustad Ahmad Lahauri and Ustad Hamid and served as a residence for Mughal emperors for 200 years, until 1857. Built alongside the Yamuna river in a perimeter of 2.41 km, its construction began in the sacred month of Muharram, on May 13, 1638, and was completed in 1648. The fort is built using red sandstone and is of an oblong octagonal plan. It has two principal gates namely Lahore Drawaza and Delhi Darwaza along its western and southern sides respectively.

Key Features of the Red Fort

The fortress of Red Fort exists in the rectangular dimension of 900m x 500m.

The ramparts of the fort are approximately 34m tall and are enclosed by the moat.

The three-storied structures of the fort are surrounded by the octagonal towers and they form two of five gateways related to the fort. They are known as the Gate of Delhi and the Gate of Lahori.

There are two figures in the shape of giant elephants that are guarding the gates of Delhi. The main entrance for the fort is through the Lahori gate.

There is a covered passage that leads to various places within the fort having shops on either side.

The Architecture of Red Fort

The Red Fort has an area of 254.67 acres (103.06 ha) enclosed by defensive walls of 2.41 kilometres (1.50 mi), interrupted by turrets and bastions and ranging in height from 18 meters (59 ft) on the side of the river to 33 meters (108 ft) on the side of the town.

With the north-south axis longer than the eastern-western axis, the fort is octagonal. The artwork of the fort infuses Persian, European, and Indian art, resulting in a unique style rich in form, expression, and hue in Shahjahani. The public used the Lahori and Delhi Gates, and the Khizrabad Gate was for the emperor.

Damaaga

This helmet-like structure also forms part of the fort's defensive architecture, which is often seen alternating with arrow slits. It's referred to as a damaaga (a 'damaaga' is a ‘nostril'; the name is probably due to the shape similarity). Damaagas were used to pour burning pitches into enemies attempting to scale the wall.

Arrow Slits

This architectural element was typically placed high up on the fort's outer walls. Arrow slits or loopholes are known as vertical slits in the walls because they allowed soldiers inside the fort to shoot arrows from the shelter of the wall at an outside enemy.

Pishtaq

The pishtaq, or niche, was another architectural element that had been in use long before the Mughal period. This is a quadrilateral shelf - like a niche let into a wall. These began as a practical element of architecture (like the kanguras and damaagas): Pishtaqs could be used as a shelf, to store items, and to hold lamps to illuminate a chamber. Pishtaqs retained their functionality, particularly as a receptacle for lamps, unlike kanguras or damages. Pishtaqs, for example, were very prevalent in pre-Mughal Delhi as a form of decoration in mosques.

Chadar

Another important characteristic of Mughal architecture, the chadar, was also often incorporated into garden pavilions. A chadar is a stone slope that, when it descends from a higher level to a lower one, acts as the bed for a water channel.

Lahori Gate and Delhi Gate

The main gate to the Red Fort, named for its orientation towards the city of Lahore, is the Lahori Gate. During the reign of Aurangzeb, the beauty of the gate was spoiled by the addition of bastions. The Delhi Gate is the southern public entrance and is similar to the Lahori Gate in layout and appearance. Two life-size stone elephants face each other on either side of the gate. After their previous demolition by Aurangzeb, these were renewed by Lord Curzon in 1903.

Chatta Chowk

It is adjacent to the Lahori Gate. Silk, jewellery, and other items for the imperial household were sold here during the Mughal period. The bazaar leads to an open outer court, where it crosses the large north-south street that originally split the military functions of the fort (to the west) from the palaces(to the east). (to the east). The southern end of the street is the Gate of Delhi.

Naubat Khana

The now-isolated Naubat Khana (also known as Nakkar Khana), the drum house, stands on the eastern wall of the court. Music was played daily at scheduled times next to a large gate, where everyone except royalty needed to dismount.

Short Red Fort Essay in English

It was originally referred to as 'Qila-i-Mubarak' (the blessed fort) because it was the royal family’s residence. Its layout was designed to retain and integrate this site with the Salimgarh Fort. Another similar fort was built facing the Taj Mahal, on the opposite side of the river, known as Agra Fort.

Structures Within the Red Fort

Some of the prominent structures within the red fort are as follows.

Diwan-e-Azam: This is the public audience hall having engraved arches and columns which display fine craftsmanship. The hall was initially decorated using white Chunam stucco. The emperor addressed the audience in the marble balcony in the back of the elevated recess. This was also used for holding state functions.

Rang Mahal and Mumtaz Mahal: These two are situated in the southernmost pavilions in the palace. The Mumtaz Mahal has an Archaeological museum of the fort. The Rang Mahal used to house the mistresses and wives of the emperor. It was brightly decorated and painted with the mosaic of mirrors and the meaning of its name is “Palace of colours”.

Khas Mahal: The Khas Mahal was the apartment that was designated for the emperor. The Muthamman Burj, is the octagonal tower where the emperor made the appearance before the people that used to wait on the river bank, and it is connected to it. The majority of the kings during those times used to do this.

Diwan-i-Khas: The gate that leads to the innermost court of the palace and Diwan-i-Khas, known as the hall of private audience, on the northern side of the Diwan-i-Alam.It is made using white marble and is embossed with precious stones. It had a silver ceiling which was later restored to timber. There is a presence of an inscription by Persian poet Amir Khusrow which can be found at either end of the hall, across two outer arches.

Hammam: The imperial baths were known as Hammam, and they consisted of three doomed rooms having white marble flooring.

Indian history is closely associated with this fort. It was here that the final Mughal ruler named Bahadur Shah Zafar was deposed by the British thereby marking the end of 3 centuries of Mughal rule in India. Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of India, hoisted the national flag of India above Lahori gate on the 15th of August, 1947.

Khas Mahal – The palace was used as the king’s private residence. It was divided into three sections: the chamber of telling beads, the sitting room, and the sleeping room.

Rang Mahal -The Rang Mahal, which literally means ‘Palace of Colors’, was built to house the emperor’s mistresses and wives.

Hira Mahal – In 1842, Bahadur Shah II built the Hira Mahal, probably one of the last Mughal constructions before the British invasion. Although only a pavilion, it has an intriguing legend.

Moti Masjid – The Moti Masjid, also known as the Pearl Mosque, was built by Aurangzeb for his personal use.

In the Hammam, there were baths for the emperors. In the eastern apartment, there was a dressing room. In the western apartment, hot water was dispensed.

The Red Fort of Delhi, situated on the western bank of the river Yamuna, is one of the must-visit places of Delhi . It is the largest historical structure in Delhi. This incredible monument was established in 1638, by the Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan. This fort is often said to be the pinnacle of Mughal creativity. It has been around 380 years, but this monument has still passed the test of time and nature.

History of the Red Fort

When Shah Jahan, the 5th Mughal Emperor, shifted his capital from Agra to Delhi’s Shahjahanabad, he created there, the majestic palace of Red Fort. It is said that “ Rome was not built in a day ”, and neither was the Red Fort. It took 10 years of hard work and patience to build this fort. Its construction work started in around 1638 AD and got completed in 1648 AD.

Ustad Hamil and Ustad Ahmed were the chief architects of the fort. At that time, the name of the fort was given Qila-e-Mubarak, which translates to “Blessed Fort”. Also, this fort was originally white and not red, but it got its present name from the Britishers, who painted it red.

Architecture of Red Fort

The Red Fort, which covers 225 acres of land, is octagonal in shape when viewed from the top. It is surrounded by a 2.5 km long, red-sandstone boundary walls, which gives it the name “Red Fort”. What makes it the perfect example of “ Unity in Diversity ” is its architectural style, which is a mixture of Mughal, Persian, Timurid and Hindu architectural styles.

The whole Red Fort Complex consists of Shah Jahan’s palace and the adjacent Salimgarh Fort, which was built in 1546. There are 2 key chambers in the fort, Diwan-i-‘Am (Hall of Audience) and Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audiences). It was Diwan-i-Am, where the emperor would hear the complaints of his subjects, and it was Diwan-i-Khas, where Shah Jahan hosted his famous “Peacock Throne”, which also consisted the world’s largest diamond “Kohinoor”.

Prominent Structures within the Fort

  • Rang Mahal: It, literally translates as the “Palace of Colours”, and was used to house the emperor’s wives and mistresses.
  • Mumtaz Mahal: This palace, which translates to Jewel Palace, was one of the 6 palaces made facing towards the Yamuna river.
  • Khas Mahal: This palace was used as the emperor’s private residence. It was mainly divided into 3 parts, namely, the chamber of telling beads, sitting room and sleeping chamber.
  • Hira Mahal: This palace was built later on in 1842, and it is believed that Shah Jahan had hidden a diamond in this palace, which is not yet found and is said to be more precious than even the  Kohinoor.
  • Moti Masjid: The name translates to ‘Pearl Mosque’, it was built by Aurangzeb for his personal use.
  • Hammam: These were the imperial baths, used by the emperors and surrounded by floral designs and white marbles.

Mughal palaces are famous for its grand gardens. The garden Hayat-Baksh-Bagh of the Red Fort, makes us feel heaven on earth. The water of Yamuna river was passed through a canal and turned to majestic fountains, known as ‘Nahr-i-Bahisht’ or ‘Stream of Paradise’.

It had dual purposes as a military strategic place and Royal residence for the King’s family. It was built exactly 2.5 kilometers away from the Taj Mahal.

The Red Fort of Agra the  a very interesting history as it has seen almost six centuries and witnessed the changing times from filled courtrooms to now-empty tourist spot. This Fort was built in 1654 by Akbar after his succession to the throne. Agra was an important strategic spot for the Mughal Empire apart from Delhi. Since the time Babur defeated Ibrahim Lodi at the war of Panipat in 1526, Agra was abandoned yet important for the Mughal sultanates. Akbar, therefore, decided to redesign it and make it his capital. He arrived at Agra in 1558 and used Red Sandstones to build this entire Red Fort.

It is said that Red Fort was built by 1,444,000 masons maybe more. It took around 15 years to get completed. After Akbar, who built this Red Fort it was passed on to his son, Jahangir and then to Shah Jahan who made a replica of this Place in New Delhi, as well.

But as we say, this Fort has witnessed some ghastly sins. In order to sit on the throne, Aurangzeb held his own father as a captive in his own Fort. He was always mourning the death of his beloved wife Mumtaz, therefore he was held in a Marble balcony in a tower named Musamman Burj which gave a direct view of the Taj Mahal.

It is laid out in the typical Islamic and Mughal design, that is, the Karmuka Style. It is rectangular designed on three of its side but gives a curvy look on its fourth side to follow the curve of the Yamuna river. The Fort has two moats; one is known as Wet Moat and contains crocodiles in it. The other is known as dry and hasflesh-eatingg tigers roaming freely in it. The other two sides of the Fort have high red sandstone walls such that, the inner wall is 40 meters high and outer is 70 meters high. It has three entry gates to step inside the fort, that is, Delhi Gate, Amar Singh Gate and the Lahore gate.

100 Essay On A Visit To A Historical Place

Our school recently organised a trip to Red Fort for class 8 students. The Red Fort, popularly referred to as Lal Quila, is a prominent landmark in Delhi. It is situated beside the Yamuna River. Shah Jehan constructed it in 1648 using red stones. It included Diwan-e-Aam which is a hall of public audience, Diwan-e-Khas, Rang Mahal, and other structures. Silver linings, diamonds, and precious stones have been used to embellish the pavilion's surroundings. There was also a museum honouring veterans and a war memorial where weapons used in the First World War were exhibited. Every Independence Day, the Indian Prime Minister raises the flag here in Red Fort. I had a great time travelling to the Red Fort.

200 Essay On A Visit To A Historical Place

On the full moon day in October, I went to see the Taj Mahal, the Crown of the World with a few of my schoolmates. Following the passing of his wife Mumtaj Mahal, Shahjahan built this magnificent monument as a tribute to his unwavering love for her. It is claimed to have taken 22 years to construct, during which time 20,000 workers were employed. A stunning landscape surrounds the Taj Mahal. The straight paths through it are lined with tall, black cypress trees. It boasts numerous glistening flowerbeds and smooth, verdant lawns. All of these enhance the Taj's beauty.

The Taj Mahal stands on the banks of the river Jamuna and is made of white marble stone. It is surrounded by four tall slender white marble minarets, one in each corner of the platform on which the vast tomb stands. It is truly a piece of art, and India is proud of it. People travel from all over the world to witness this miracle of wonders. On a moonlit night, every aspect of the structure is really beautiful. Its attractiveness is enhanced by the Jamuna flowing nearby. It was a truly magnificent experience for me that I will never forget.

500 Essay On A Visit To A Historical Place

I visited Qutub Minar with my family last Sunday. Even though we live in Delhi, we had never been to see the minaret from up close. Qutub Minar is among Delhi's most intriguing tourist attractions. We hired a tour guide from the tourist office area located in the premises of the historical monument. While giving us a tour he told us about many interesting historical facts about the monument.

Interesting Facts | Qutub Minar is the world's tallest brick-built minaret, at 72.5 metres high. UNESCO has designated it as a World Heritage Site. This minaret is regarded as the symbol of triumph. Qutub-Ud-In Aibak, a deputy employed by Muhammad of Ghor, began building this minaret in Delhi as a memoir of victory. The building of the Minaret of Jam in Afghanistan served as inspiration for the design of the Qutub Minar. Hence, the Afghani and Indo-Islamic architecture is evident in the design of the minaret. It is regarded as the Delhi Sultanate's emblem.

Architecture | The Qutub Minar features five storeys that are constructed in various timelines and symbolise various historical events. Beautiful balconies extend from each storey, making it a one-of-a-kind minaret. Marble and red sandstone were used to construct the tower. On the northeastern side of qutub minar, Quwwat-ul-Islam Masjid, India's first mosque, was built in 1198. After over 169 years, the lighting-damaged monument underwent renovations and gained two more floors under the reign of the modern Delhi Sultan Firoz Shah Tughlak. He completed the building by adding a dome or cupola to the top. These stories were crafted from white sandstone and marble. In this tower, the colour difference is fairly noticeable. Due to an earthquake that caused the minaret to shake and tumble, this dome is no longer visible. In the British era, Major R. Smith, a member of the British Empire's Royal Engineers, reconstructed the upper section in 1823 using a "Chhatri," or Bengali-style architecture. This upper section is still visible above the fifth storey.

Places We Saw | The interior of the minaret was quite interesting to explore because it had elaborate carvings and lovely patterns that date back more than 900 years. We also saw the minaret's iron pillar which was constructed in the fourth century AD. For 1600 years, the iron pillar stood the test of time. It is almost all wrought iron and hasn't rusted yet.

Our tour guide also took us to visit the tomb of Adham Khan, a minister in Akbar's imperial court, located not far from Qutub Minar. It dates back to the 16th century. Due to the murder of one of Akbar's closest ministers by Adham Khan, the emperor mandated that an octagonal tomb be built rather than a hexagonal one to signify that it is a traitor's tomb. The monument was a large tomb with magnificent archways.

This minaret has a lengthy history, having been built and restored by numerous Indian kings. It is also an illustration of the diverse Indian culture that emerged through several dynasties.I had a great time visiting the Qutub Minar. It was an unforgettable experience that provided us a glimpse of the great heritage of our country.
