Children’s Day Celebrations in Church

There was a huge party in church on Sunday to celebrate children. Children – they are special in God’s sight, and Jesus specifically raises them up, whenever He mentions them.

Let the little children come to me, and stop keeping them away, because the kingdom from heaven belongs to people like these. (Matthew 19:14) Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it. (Mark 10:15)

So we pulled out the stops, to make it a fun day for the children, whilst having songs of praise to glorify our God, and imparting truth from the Word.

The children sang with gusto, and listened attentively as the story was told. We were pleased to be partnering the Chinese church in this – the increased number of children and the bilingual songs and story made for such a great service!

Soon it was party time, and there were so many games, and most could be tailored in its level of difficulty for children of all ages to play in some form or another.

Truly thankful to the dedicated, focused and creative Sunday School teacher (a FTWM – full time working mum- too!) who orchestrated it all, planning the details of 8 game stalls, coordinating with the bouncy castle / helium balloons / popcorn machine supplier, and making sure there were people to take charge of all the stations, and various parts of the programme!

Other teachers and our youths stepped up to help man the stalls and all the children present, from age 1 to 12 had so much fun – hope they also felt truly loved!

Thankful for the commitment of all who made this happen, for the sponsorships from individuals, and to our Lord who brought the children in. What a super day to give thanks and appreciate the little ones in our midst.

This reminded me of an earlier Easter event too, where these super mums / sunday school teachers came up with this!

Indeed the tomb is empty!

3 New Gospel Presentations for Your Children’s Ministry Classroom

Published: January 15, 2021

These 3 new gospel presentations are fun ways to share the gospel in your children’s ministry that will really stick with kids.

Gospel Presentation: All Clear

Fill three clear plastic bottles with 8 to 10 ounces of water. Add a small amount of liquid bleach to one of the bottles. (Keep out of the children’s reach.) You’ll also need red and blue food coloring and a clear pitcher or jar to hold the water from all three bottles.

Drop four drops of blue food coloring into one bottle of plain water. Say: When Jesus came into our world as a baby, he had to leave his home in heaven. We often think of heaven as being up above the blue skies. Drop four drops of red coloring into the second bottle of plain water.

Say: When Jesus grew up, he suffered and died on a cross.

  • What did soldiers put on Jesus’ head? (A crown of thorns)
  • What did they put through his hands and feet? (Nails)
  • Do you think Jesus bled like you have when you’ve hurt yourself?

Say: Red reminds us of the blood Jesus bled and how much he hurt. Pour the two bottles at once into the large pitcher or jar.

Washing Our Sins Away

Say: Purple reminds us that Jesus had to leave heaven, come to our world, and become a person like us so he could shed his blood to take away our sins. When Jesus died on the cross, had he done anything wrong? No. Jesus was perfect. He was clear and clean just like our last bottle.

Pour the bleach/water solution into the purple water. Say: Jesus never sinned. Jesus died on the cross because he loves each of us so much. One day, we’ll go to heaven to be with Jesus. Our blue water reminds us of that. Let’s sing “Jesus Loves Me.” As we sing, keep your eyes on our blue water. It’ll become clear.

At the end of the song, say: J esus cleanses us from all sin. Jesus loves us so much that he was willing to leave his home in heaven and die on a cross for us. What a wonderful Savior! Let’s pray and thank him.

Dear Jesus, thank you for leaving your home in heaven to die on a cross so that we could live in heaven with you. We love you, Jesus. Amen.

Gospel Presentation: Now You See It!

Here’s an illusion you can create to help children understand new life in Christ.

Make a tube by using two empty store-bought icing containers, a sturdy file folder, and Con-Tact paper with a print that’s the same from all directions, such as polka dots or stripes. Cover the file folder with the Con-Tact paper. Place the icing containers bottom to bottom. Then wrap and glue the decorated file folder around them. The container openings will be the ends of the tube. Glue a fake caterpillar in one end and a fake butterfly in the other end.

At the butterfly end of the tube, mark a small symbol visible only to you so you can tell which end is which.

Show the children the end with the caterpillar. Say: Before we place our faith in Jesus, we are just like an ugly old caterpillar. Sin in our lives keeps us from being the beautiful butterflies God wants us to be.

Divert kids’ attention by asking a child to show the audience the pretty scarf you’re going to drape over the tube.

As people watch the child, turn the tube around. Cover the tube with the scarf. Have someone read aloud 2 Corinthians 5:17 .

Then pull off the scarf and show everyone the beautiful butterfly in the other end. Say: The caterpillar changing into a butterfly reminds me of how Jesus changes us when we follow him. Jesus is our Savior. When we believe in Jesus, we become alive again like the butterfly. It’s like we’re born a second time to live eternally with God in heaven.

Gospel Presentation: Repentance Run

Use this gospel presentation outside, in a gym, or in the largest room in your church. Have kids line up at one end of the room while you stand at the other end. Say: On “go,” walk toward me. When I yell “repent,” turn around and walk the other way. Again, when I yell “repent,” turn around and walk the other way. Ready? Go!

Play for up to five minutes or until children are wearing down. Then gather everyone together and ask:

  • What did you have to do when I yelled “repent”?

Say: To repent means to turn around and go the other way.

Read aloud Mark 1:14-15 . Ask:

  • What does Jesus want us to do?
  • Which kinds of things do people need to turn away from?
  • What does Jesus say we need to do after we repent?

Read aloud Acts 3:19-20 .

  • According to these verses, what happens when we repent and return to God?
  • Is there anything you   need to repent from so you can turn to Jesus in faith?

Allow children time to respond; then pray for and with each child.

A children's moment during a church service is a valuable opportunity for pastors, teachers and children's workers to engage with young members of their congregation. This moment allows children to feel seen and included in the service, which can contribute to their overall sense of belonging within the church community.

Additionally, a well-crafted children's moment can help young and old alike to become better acquainted with the Bible story, theme, or passage being discussed during the service. By engaging with the material in a way that is age-appropriate and interactive, children can begin to reflect on the message being conveyed and develop a deeper understanding of their faith.

Of course you can use any object lesson on this site as a children´s moment, but below, you will find a variety of children´s moments based on certain Bible stories that you can use in your church service, school assembly or children´s ministry.

Every church needs slides for kids' ministry, Bible study groups, and Sunday services. And every minister has probably experienced the stress of putting their church PowerPoint slides together, despite having no design experience. Ever watched as eyes glaze over and your audience begins to fidget uncomfortably? This is the article for you.

Creating a presentation for your church shouldn't be daunting, but church workers without the right expertise often struggle to create a masterpiece. And when a presentation is less-than entertaining, people’s minds tend to wander to anything and everything else. While these five PowerPoint crafting principles ring true for all presentations, we have compiled five church-specific tips.

Before you begin next week’s presentation for church, read on for essential tips on crafting engaging and dynamic sermon slides.

1. Create a Bold Church Welcome Slide

Bold welcome to church slide

Welcome slides for church should be instantly recognizable. Include your church logo or follow the same theme while crafting it so whoever attends knows what they are in for. It works like branding so that your church is instantly identified, even at a glance. Make it bold, bright, and beautiful, using an eye-catching font and maybe even a church background image too.

If designing isn’t your forte, not to worry. Your church slides don’t have to lose out. Poster My Wall has a variety of church welcome slide templates so you can create an aesthetic work of art in seconds. Make sure to include your social media handles and a call to action telling people to follow you on your welcome-to-church slide. It's likely people will be seated with time to spare to look you up.

2. Don’t Overfill Church Announcement Slides

Simple announcement slide

We love a positive announcement as much as the next person, but there is such a thing as overkill. While it is a thoughtful idea to praise everyone as much as possible, too much is boring and repetitive for those in the audience. Instead, keep it as special as possible so that people know just how important the announcements are.

Some pieces of information are essential to be shared (think: fire drill update or an event time change), and you don’t want them to get lost in a sea of updates. The bottom line is: don’t bore your congregants with mundane details unless absolutely necessary. If it's not essential, save it until a one-on-one meeting.

3. Get Creative with Church Slide Backgrounds

Church motion graphics church slide backgrounds

The best way to keep people engaged in your slides and what you have to say is by switching up your church slide backgrounds as often as possible. You could make them seasonal to reflect the passing of time and the weather outside or relevant to the topic matter. Or, simply select something because it is aesthetically pleasing and attractive.

Instead of choosing between the limited options available on PowerPoint, why not try some of these background options by Church Motion Graphics ? They offer a free church slide design makeover, free downloads of their fonts, and free access to their sample pack. You don’t need to be a designer to make high-quality slides with resources like this available online.

4. Use a Range of Church Slide Templates

Canva templates

Church slides often repeat the same themes again and again. Presentations in kids’ ministry and seasonal slideshows shown during a Sunday service will recycle year after year, maybe seeing minor tweaks and changes. Stop this from becoming predictable by using different templates, even if they contain the same information!

Canva offers endlessly customizable church slides, helping you make a professional presentation in minutes. Find a diverse collection of church slide templates here , whether you are looking for inspiration for Mother’s Day or a prime-quality storytime PowerPoint for kindergarten. Go a cut above the rest using templates made by experts, whether you use them for PowerPoint or opt for a church Google Slides template.

5. Let Church Presentation Software Make Your Life Easier

Playlister software 3 easy steps to make your life easier

If you ever feel like curating your church slides is taking too much time, you should know that there is an easier way. Presenting is a central feature of any church for kids’ ministry, services, and digital signage, which is why Playlister has created software to take that weight off your shoulders. Church presentation software is the smart solution to managing your church slides.

ideas for children's church

When most people think about ideas for children’s church, the first things that come to mind tend to be “classic” Old Testament stories on Noah and the ark, Jonah and the big fish, Daniel in the lions’ den, and so on. But Bible lessons for kids can extend far beyond these beloved accounts of biblical heroes and adventures.

In fact, almost all Bible study topics and themes can be adapted into age-appropriate ideas for children’s church. God’s Word speaks eternal truth to everyone, whether young or old, new believer or seasoned Christian.

No matter if you’re teaching preschoolers , conducting ministry to youth , or holding virtual classes for homebound church members, many ideas for children’s church work well for all learners. With Bible  lessons for kids , just keep in mind children’s ages, developmental stage and attention levels.

Get started with these 10 ideas for children’s church:

More than ever, children today need to hear that God loves them unconditionally and that God  is love ( 1 John 4:8 ). Include these important reminders in every lesson you present.

Throughout the Bible, people speak to God and get results. During his earthly ministry, Jesus speaks often about prayer as a powerful relationship-builder with God. Use object lessons and character studies to reinforce the message that God wants to hear from us and is always listening.

3. Ten Commandments

God’s Ten Commandments are more than just stone tablets entrusted to Moses. God gave his law out of love for the people he created in his image. And children need to hear that obedience flows out of our love for our Creator.

4. Forgiveness

The idea that God totally wipes away our sins through Jesus’ blood can be tough to fathom, even for adults. Assure children that no matter what they may do, they can say sorry to God, who makes them clean and new on the inside.

5. Kindness

Lessons about Jesus’ Golden Rule are always relevant, but these days children especially need to hear about how to treat other kids . Help young people learn Godly behavior that they can apply to all interactions, whether at home, school or church.

GAMES AND ACTIVITIES

Cool tricks .  Have each kid think of something wacky they can do that they can show to the other kids.  For example, demonstrating double jointed limbs, whistling a fun song, turning their eyelid inside out.  Crazy stuff like that.

Human Knot.   Get all of the students in a circle.  Have them reach across the circle to connect their right hand with someone else.  Then, reach across the circle and connect their left hand with someone else.  The goal of the game is to untangle the hands and make a perfect circle.

Dance off.   Play upbeat music and have every kid dance their best moves.  Slowly touch students shoulders to sit down, leaving the best dancers up front for everyone to see.  Once you have narrowed it down to 2 awesome dancers, have the rest of the class vote on the best dancer by using a clap-o-meter (which is you).  Place your hand about one dancer, the kids clap and cheer.  Then the other dancer, the class claps and cheers.  You decide who got the loudest cheers and give them a prize.

Shoe Scramble . Have all of the students take off their shoes and throw them into the middle of the room in a large pile.  Everyone then stands against the wall and waits for the music to come on.  When the music starts, the students all leap into the middle of the room to find both pairs of their shoes and return to the wall, put the shoes on, and tie all of their strings.  Whoever finishes first, wins!

Balloon volleyball.   You can just have the whole class try to keep a ball up in the air, and if the ball touches the floor that person is out.  Keep playing until there are 2 contenders.  The last one standing wins a prize.  Or, you could divide into two teams and divide the class with a row of chairs and play more organized balloon volleyball.  Count points for teams instead of students having to “be out” if they drop the balloon.

Sing-Off.   There is a singing game where you divide the class into 2 teams.  Each team sends up one person at a time. The two students from separate teams must sing a song without messing up the words as loud as they can on the count of 3.  The songs must be different and you can not repeat any songs that have already been sung.  The game gets more and more difficult the longer it goes. One student may sing Jingle Bells while the other sings Row Row Row your boat.  If both students succeed, then they go to the back of the line for another turn, if one forgets the words or can’t think of a song, they must sit down.  Then, the next 2 students come forward and repeat the process until one team is left with the final person and the other team is all sitting down.

Hula Hoop Contest .  Divide the kids into two teams.  Each team sends up one person at a time to compete in the hula hoop contest.  The winner goes to the back of the line and the loser sits down.  Whichever team has the most people standing in line at the end wins.

Toilet Paper Games.   It’s a water themed sort of day.  Divide the class into teams.  Play some wild and crazy music while having the teams dress one student in toilet paper.  They can come up with any sort of design.  At the end, vote on the best dressed toilet paper model.

Noodle Baseball.   Take the class outside for a fun game of noodle baseball.  You use water noodles as the bats and a large beach ball as the ball.  You can even use kiddie pools for the bases.  (keeping in the water theme of baptism)  This game could be played inside without water, if the weather is cold or rainy.

Simeon says .  Do some out of the box moves, then let some students take turns being the leaders.

Obstacle Course.   Create an obstacle course out of objects in the room.  Blind fold a student and take them through the course with using only words for directions.  Change it up by using only sounds and not words.  Discuss how hard it can be to follow directions blindly.

Crab Soccer.   Play a game of soccer using a balloon or a very light ball.  The only rule is that the students must stay on all fours, with their hands behind their legs (like a crab).  Could get interesting.

Corn Hole.   Good ole corn hole time!  You can bring in some boards or create your own.  Use anything you want, like rolled up socks for the bean bag and trash cans or Dixie cups as the hole/goal.

Bowling .  Buy a kids bowling set or make up your own game.  You could set up Dixie cups and bowl them over with soccer balls, or create a funny human bowling game, where the kids are the bowling pins and they must fall over if the ball touches them.

Sock Wars .  This is a wrestling game at its best.  Two contestants wear socks and get in the middle of the class circle.  The first person to remove the others sock, wins.  For safety, make sure the rules are clear and they can not touch the other person except for the foot/sock.

Price is Right.   Bring in a few items and have some volunteer students vote on the cost of those items.  Whoever gets closest to the actual retail price is the winner.

Broom Hockey.   Divide the class into two teams.  Put a trash can down on each side to be the goal.  Give each team a broom.  Have the students get in a line.  The teams will send one contender into the ring at a time.  (This is a little like steal the bacon).  One person from each team comes to the middle of the room, with their broom.  Put a puck type item (could be a paper wad) in between the two contenders.  Whoever can get the puck into the trash can goal using only their broom wins a point for the team.  Then, the next two contenders approach the middle.

Basketball.   The trashcan is the hoop.  A paper wad or a small kids ball is the basketball.  The students line up to take one turn at a time.  If they make the shot, they go to the back of the line.  If they miss they take a seat.  The last one standing is the winner.

Limbo .  Turn on the limbo song.  Hold up a broom or water noodle and have the students do the limbo under it.  Lower it at the end of the line and keep going.  If a student falls, they have a seat. Change it up and start low and have the students jump over the pole.

Jazzercise .  Play some fun music and ask a student to lead the class in jazzcercise moves.  It’s like follow the leader plus aerobics plus dancing.

Charades.   Write down some different items on strips of paper and have the students draw one out of a hat.  They act out the word without using words and the class guesses the word(s).

Tag .  There are a million different versions of tag.  Google knows.

Balloon pop .  Throw one or more balloons in the middle of the circle and have the kids race to pop the balloons any way they can.  Whoever pops the most balloons wins.

Relays .  There are lots of ways to do relays.  Start with 2 teams and have them do ridiculous things like pass a ball over their heads, under their legs, around their sides.  Use a hula hoop.  Have the students hold hands and pass the hoop through the line without letting go of their hands.  Pass an egg without breaking it.  Pass an apple using only your chins.  Have every student hold a cup.  Pass water from the beginning of the line to the end and see which team can fill a pitcher fastest.  Lots more ideas on the internet.

Four Corners.   Have one student stand in the middle and be blindfolded.  All of the other students pick a corner of the room.  The blindfolded student picks a corner.  If you are standing in the corner, then you are out.

Eating contest.   Bring in all sorts of foods.  Have two contestants compete to see who will eat the most or the fastest.  You could bring in some yummy things, like cupcakes, but also bring in some interesting/yucky things like sardines.

Board Games.   There are board games in the kids closet.

Movies.   There are movies in the kids closet to choose from.

Partner Shoe Game **.**  Before telling anyone what you are doing today, have all of the kids throw their shoes into one corner of the room.  Next, have the students pick a partner.  Turn on some fun music.  One partner sits on one side of the room, while telling the other partner how to find their shoes in the pile of shoes.  Once the shoes are found, the person who found the shoes puts the shoes on their partner for them.  Then, switch.  The partners who finish putting each others’ shoes on first wins.

Flashlight tag .  Remove all of the chairs and furniture from the classroom.  Turn off the lights.  Choose one person to be “it”.  The kids move silently around the room in the dark.  The IT person must turn on their flashlight at random times to tag a person.

We hope you enjoy these free games and activities. If you are interested in additional resources, children's church curriculum, and lesson plans, check out the Kidsministryteam store .

How to Lead Your Kids’ Ministry Through a Beautiful Advent

How to lead your kids through an advent

I didn’t celebrate Advent as a child. In fact, I don’t think I was aware of its existence until college.

My family and I did celebrate Christmas, and I knew it centered on Jesus’ birth. We usually participated in a Christmas musical at church.

At home we had lights on our house, a Christmas tree in our living room, and (best of all) presents under the tree.

Portrait woman carrying stack of Christmas gifts

I remember a strong sense of excitement that grew until Christmas Day …and then the magic and hope deflated as soon as the gifts were unwrapped.

This slightly depressing cycle repeated each year: mounting anticipation followed by an abrupt collapse and strange emptiness. I still loved Christmas, but I wondered if something was missing.

I still loved Christmas, but I wondered if something was missing.

When I had my own children, I searched for a Christmas tradition we could enjoy each year as a family.

I wanted it to last most of December and dig deeply into the meaning behind the holiday.

Ideally, our tradition would hone our focus and help us remember not only the fact that Jesus came but also the reason that His arrival mattered.

The season of Advent—often celebrated during the 24 days leading up to Christmas—intrigued me.

What Is Advent?

Advent means “arrival” or “coming.” It is a season of expectation and hope. Believers across the world spend the weeks before Christmas preparing for that day of beauty and light.

The first recorded mention of Advent occurred at a meeting of church leaders in Spain in the 300’s A.D. The Council of Saragossa encouraged people to attend church daily between December 17-29.

Advent eventually developed into a month-long season in December.

Traditions vary by country, but people celebrate Advent all over the world. Each country or faith contributes something unique.

  • In Eastern Orthodox churches, believers participate in a Nativity Fast that begins November 15 and ends December 24. During the fast, they abstain from meat, dairy, fish, wine, and oil.
  • In Germany, Christian set four candles in an evergreen Advent wreath. Each Sunday preceding Christmas, they light another candle while singing Christmas songs.
  • In China, families put up a “tree of light” and decorate it with lanterns, flowers, and red paper chains. Some give apples on Christmas Eve because the Chinese word for apple sounds similar to the word for peace.
  • In the Philippines, people attend nine different early morning masses with the final mass occurring on Christmas Day. They decorate a bamboo pole with a lighted “lantern” that represents the star followed by the wise men.
  • In Costa Rica, families decorate their houses with tropical flowers and set up a nativity scene. On Christmas Eve, everyone dresses up and goes to Midnight Mass.

Celebrating Advent means joining Christians across the world—and through the centuries—to celebrate the coming of Jesus.

Children in tent in front of Christmas tree

Advent enriches Christmas by allowing time to reflect and remember.

People and this world are full of darkness, but the Light has come—and He is making all things new.

How Do You Celebrate Advent in Kids’ Ministry?

Lighting candles.

One common way to incorporate Advent on Sundays is the lighting of candles set in an evergreen wreath. Starting on the fourth Sunday before Christmas, light a new candle each Sunday.

Once again, traditions vary, but the candles represent different ideas or themes central to the season.

What Do the Candles Mean?

  • The first candle, called the “Prophet’s Candle,” symbolizes hope. The Old Testament prophets, especially Isaiah, waited in hope for the Messiah’s arrival.
  • The second candle, called “Bethlehem’s Candle,” represents faith. Micah had foretold that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem, forging a connection between Kind David and his coming descendent whose kingdom and throne would be established forever.
  • The third candle, called the “Shepherd’s Candle,” symbolizes joy . To the shepherds’ great joy, angels announced that Jesus came for humble, unimportant people like them, too.
  • The fourth candle, called the “Angel’s Candle,” represents peace . The angels proclaimed that Jesus came to bring peace on earth—He came to bring people close to God and to each other again.
  • The (optional) fifth candle, called “Christ’s Candle,” represents purity and light . It is placed in the middle of the wreath and lit on Christmas Day, commemorating the arrival of the Light of the World.

Gathering on Christmas Eve

Another well-known tradition we practice at our church is a Christmas Eve service.

The church gathers to sing songs that focus our hearts on Jesus and the hope He brings. At some point in the service, all of the children are invited to the front to hear the Christmas story.

Connecting with Families During the Week

There are creative ways you can encourage families in your church to celebrate Advent.

One church in Massachusetts created a daily video of someone at their church reading a story from The Advent Storybook: 25 Bible Stories Showing Why Jesus Came .

They posted the 25 videos on their website and Facebook page, inviting families to pause for a few minutes each day to remember and celebrate.

Choosing an Advent Tradition for Your Church

There are many other ways to celebrate Advent! Choose something that fits your church’s culture and priorities.

The best Advent traditions will help peel away the distractions or misbeliefs that prevent people from seeing the immense glory and weight of Christmas.

The best Advent traditions will peel away the distractions that prevent people from seeing the immense glory of Christmas.

The Promised Son of God, clothed in flesh, came to live among us in order to rescue us and make all things new.

If we lose this truth in the midst of the busyness of December, Christmas will come and go without people encountering Immanuel, God with us .

What Advent Resources Do You Recommend to Parents?

When I began searching for Advent resources, I had two small children. I looked on Amazon and found a book that I hoped would be engaging. We tried to read through that book, but I found myself drastically editing the text each day.

I really needed something that was clear and simple; focused on Jesus and grace; easily understood by little ones; and historically accurate. I searched again the next year but still couldn’t find anything that was quite right.

As December approached, I struggled to answer this question: Why did Jesus come? I needed to answer this for myself before I could explain it to my kids.

That year, I decided to write my own Advent book for our family. I wanted to start with Creation and journey through the Old Testament.

As I worked through that ancient text, I realized a central message it conveyed: Jesus, the Promised Son, came to rescue us and make all things good and new again, like they were in the beginning.

The patriarchs, prophets, kings, and other Jewish people all longed for the day when the Messiah would come to make all things right. They guarded this promise and kept hope alive through countless dark centuries.

And then, in the fullness of time, He came.

My Story Behind The Advent Storybook

We read through the stories that first Christmas, and my children loved our time together. It was special to sit down as a family and think through the history behind Jesus’ arrival.

The following year, I felt like God wanted me to publish the stories I had written. Through a series of events only God could orchestrate, The Advent Storybook: 25 Bible Stories Showing Why Jesus Came was published by David C Cook and made available to families across the world.

Many families combine The Advent Storybook with Advent calendars involving chocolate or with other fun activities. At adventstorybook.com , printable ornaments that accompany each story are available for free.

In recent years, many families have shown a growing interest in celebrating seasons like Advent. I think we’re all longing for meaning and hope in a world often shadowed by tragedy and evil. Advent provides a wonderful opportunity to connect this longing with the truth of our beautiful Rescuer.

Jesus came to restore and redeem what we lost so long ago: Our close friendship with God, with others, and with all of Creation.

There is more to Christmas—and Advent helps us remember the hope we have in Jesus. One day, He will wipe away all our tears and bring us back home to Him.

She later earned her certificate in Perspectives on the World Christian Movement. For years, Laura had been striving unceasingly to be “good enough” for God and for others. When she finally confronted the terrifying truth that she could never be good enough, her striving ceased and her dancing began! What is Good Friday? Here's what to know about the holy holiday

The events leading up to good friday are known as holy week, which starts on palm sunday and ends on easter sunday, by danielle smith • published march 29, 2024 • updated on march 29, 2024 at 11:56 am.

In the springtime, families around the world celebrate Easter .

For many Christians , Easter is an important holiday with church services to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. For others, it’s a secular celebration with bunnies, treat-filled baskets and decorated eggs.

But two days before Easter Sunday is another important Christian holiday. Known as Good Friday, the holy day commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus.

What is good friday.

According to the Christian faith, Jesus was arrested and put on trial for claiming to be the Son of God. Roman authorities sentenced him to death by crucifixion. He was beaten and forced to carry a wooden cross to the place of execution — called Golgotha or Calvary — where he was nailed to the cross and left to die. Jesus was eventually taken down from the cross and buried, according to the Bible.

Christians believe Jesus died on the cross to save humanity from its sins and restore people's relationship with God. Many Christians refer to this belief as the Atonement.

Commemorating Jesus' crucifixion, Good Friday is a solemn day of mourning and reflection for Christians, who often attend special church services and prayer vigils.

Good Friday is a part of Holy Week, which includes Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday or Holy Thursday, and Good Friday, leading up to Easter Sunday.

When is Good Friday?

In 2024, the religious holiday will take place on Friday, March 29.

The date of Good Friday changes every year depending on when Passover occurs. Easter Sunday is always two days later.

Why is it called Good Friday?

So, what's so good about Good Friday?

“It’s a very weird day to call ‘good’ when you have your savior and Messiah die,” said Rev. Dr. Brent Strawn, a professor of Old Testament at Duke Divinity School and an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church. “Why would you call that a good day?”

The reason why Good Friday is called "good" is not entirely clear. One common explanation is that the word "good" originally meant "holy" in Old English, so "Good Friday" could be synonymous with "Holy Friday" or "God's Friday."

Strawn says he doesn't think the name is trivializing.

“For those people who have Christian faith, it is a good thing that Christ died for us,” Strawn said. “It gave us peace with God and made us at one with God.”

Strawn says another reason for the name Good Friday might stem from a deeper understanding of goodness and an awareness that Easter and the salvation of humanity are near.

“For me, it really suggests that, in Christianity’s most robust and thoughtful forms, this is not a rejection of the sadness and tragedy of death, but rather a real thick understanding of the goodness that came out of a very tragic thing,” Strawn said.

How do Christians observe Good Friday?

Christians observe Good Friday in different ways, but here are some standard practices:

Fasting : Some Christians fast to commemorate Jesus' sacrifice, while others will refrain from eating meat.

Stations of the Cross : In this 14-step devotional practice, people retrace Jesus' final steps before his crucifixion. The stations are often represented through paintings in a church or outdoors.

Good Friday Processions : Some countries and cultures march with images and statues of Jesus or reenact his crucifixion.

Prayer and Church Services : Many Christians pray to contemplate the significance of Jesus' sacrifice and his death.

Although Christians know Easter is approaching, church services on Good Friday often reflect the tone of the crucifixion and death of Jesus through Bible readings, prayers and hymns.

Strawn says Christian worship services often end with Jesus’ words from the cross — “It is finished” — with the congregation leaving quietly in total darkness.

“The downplayed or somber nature of worship on Good Friday shows that Christians are trying to take that low point seriously and to really feel the full weight of Christ’s death,” Strawn said.
