Positive Messages
The movie is fairly downbeat, but it does have a clear theme: "Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans."
Positive Role Models
Though the characters are largely victims, they represent an interesting mix of cultures and sexes. Only two characters are American and male; the rest of the diverse ensemble includes two European women, a Japanese man, and a black Englishman who requires a wheelchair while on Earth but gets to float free in space. All are treated as smart individuals, and none are tokens.
Violence & Scariness
Many characters are killed. A character drowns in fluid. Floating globs of blood. A broken, smashed hand. A lab rat is completely mangled and destroyed in a grotesque way. Flame thrower. Monster attacks. Monster eating blood, devouring bodies. Tense, scary moments.

Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Life is a sci-fi/horror movie about a killer alien creature loose on board a satellite. There's lots of violence and tense, scary stuff. Many characters are killed; one is torn apart from the inside, with globs of floating blood, and another drowns in fluid. A lab rat is also destroyed in a gruesome way, and a man's hand is smashed and broken. Language is strong, with several uses of "f--k," "motherf----r," "'s--t," and "Jesus Christ" (as an exclamation). One character watches a video feed of his child being born, though nothing graphic is shown (someone makes a joke about "who's the father?"). Overall, it's too intense for younger or more sensitive teens, but slightly older viewers may enjoy the well-crafted tension. Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds headline a cast that's diverse overall, with smart, realistic characters. Good space movie
What's the story.
In LIFE, six astronauts are aboard a satellite orbiting Earth as part of the Mars Pilgrim Mission. They retrieve a probe from Mars that contains a microscopic life form from the Red Planet. Biologist Hugh Derry ( Ariyon Bakare ) excitedly studies it, changes atmospheric conditions, and watches it grow at an alarming rate. Then it attacks and escapes, wounding his hand. Another crew member jumps in to intervene, but the creature, called "Calvin," kills him. It's up to the rest of the crew -- including Miranda North ( Rebecca Ferguson ), David Jordan ( Jake Gyllenhaal ), and Sho Kendo ( Hiroyuki Sanada ) -- to try to contain the monster. If they can't, they'll never be able to return to Earth.
Is It Any Good?
This sci-fi creature feature doesn't really do anything we haven't seen before, but its execution -- including smooth camerawork and tense editing and music -- makes it reasonably gripping. In Life , director Daniel Espinosa glides his camera along the corridors of the satellite as if it, too, were weightless, and the crisp editing and the intense score provide plenty of nervous suspense. It's not as dark and shadowy as the similar Alien , but the lights are used to interesting effect.
The characters are also interesting. Not only do they represent a diverse cross-section of cultures and sexes, but they're treated like smart people. No one wanders off alone to check something out, and no one splits up. Generally, the movie avoids the kinds of cliches the genre routinely falls back on. Plus, no one is an invincible hero stepping up to save the day. Even the creature is given credit for being clever -- a worthy adversary. Overall, Life is pretty basic, and it's a familiar story, but any story can feel fresh again when it's told well.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about Life 's violence . How gruesome is it? How much blood is shown? How does the movie use violence to generate suspense? Does exposure to violent media make kids more aggressive?
Is the movie scary ? What's the appeal of scary movies/monster movies?
How did you feel about the diverse cast? Did they feel like real people? Were any of them stereotypes ?
Do the characters show courage? What makes someone a hero? What role does sacrifice play in the movie?
What did you learn from the movie about the International Space Station and its history and goals? How does it encourage collaboration across nations?

The people materialize from out of clear white light, as a bell tolls. Where are they? An ordinary building is surrounded by greenery and an indistinct space. They are greeted by staff members who explain, courteously, that they have died, and are now at a way-station before the next stage of their experience.
They will be here a week. Their assignment is to choose one memory, one only, from their lifetimes: One memory they want to save for eternity.
Then a film will be made to reenact that memory, and they will move along, taking only that memory with them, forgetting everything else. They will spend eternity within their happiest memory.
That is the premise of Hirokazu Kore-eda's "After Life," a film that reaches out gently to the audience and challenges us: What is the single moment in our own lives we treasure the most? One of the new arrivals says that he has only bad memories. The staff members urge him to think more deeply. Surely spending eternity within a bad memory would be--well, literally, hell. And spending forever within our best memory would be, I suppose, as close as we should dare to come to heaven.
The film is completely matter-of-fact. No special effects, no celestial choirs, no angelic flim-flam. The staff is hard-working; they have a lot of memories to process in a week, and a lot of production work to do on the individual films. There are pragmatic details to be workedout: Scripts have to be written, sets constructed, special effects improvised. This isn't all metaphysical work; a member of an earlier group, we learn, choose Disney World, singling out the Splash Mountain ride.
Kore-eda, with this film and the 1997 masterpiece " Maborosi ," has earned the right to be considered with Kurosawa, Bergman and other great humanists of the cinema. His films embrace the mystery of life, and encourage us to think about why we are here, and what makes us truly happy.
At a time when so many movies feed on irony and cynicism, here is a man who hopes we will feel better and wiser when we leave his film.
The method of the film contributes to the impact. Some of these people, and some of their memories, are real (we are not told which).
Kore-eda filmed hundreds of interviews with ordinary people in Japan. The faces on the screen are so alive, the characters seem to be recalling events they really lived through, in world of simplicity and wonder.
Although there are a lot of characters in the movie, we have no trouble telling them apart because each is unique and irreplaceable.
The staff members offer a mystery of their own. Who are they, and why were they chosen to work here at the way-station, instead of moving onto the next stage like everybody else? The solution to that question is contained in revelations I will not discuss, because they emerge sonaturally from the film.
One of the most emotional moments in "After Life" is when a young staff member discovers a connection between himself and an elderly newarrival. The new arrival is able to tell him something that changes hisentire perception of his life. This revelation, of a young love long ago, has the kind of deep bittersweet resonance as the ending of " The Dead ," the James Joyce short story (and John Huston film) about a man who feels a sudden burst of identification with his wife's first lover, a young man now long dead.
"After Life" considers the kind of delicate material that could bedestroyed by schmaltz. It's the kind of film that Hollywood likes to remake with vulgar, paint-by-the-numbers sentimentality. It is like a transcendent version of " Ghost ," evoking the same emotions, but deserving them. Knowing that his premise is supernatural and fantastical, Kore-eda makes everything else in the film quietly pragmatic. The staff labors against deadlines. The arrivals set to work on their memories. There will be a screening of the films on Saturday--and then Sunday, and everything else, will cease to exist. Except for the memories.
Which memory would I choose? I sit looking out the window, as images play through my mind. There are so many moments to choose from. Just thinking about them makes me feel fortunate. I remember a line from Ingmar Bergman's film " Cries and Whispers ." After the older sister dies painfully of cancer, her diary is discovered. In it she remembers a day during her illness when she was feeling better. Her two sisters and her nurse join her in the garden, in the sunlight, and for a moment pain is forgotten, and they are simply happy to be together. This woman who we have seen die a terrible death has written: "I feel a great gratitude to my life, which gives me so much."

Roger Ebert was the film critic of the Chicago Sun-Times from 1967 until his death in 2013. In 1975, he won the Pulitzer Prize for distinguished criticism.

Critic Reviews for Life
Audience reviews for life.
The abundance of clichés doesn't prevent this from being a thrilling and entertaining ride.
It's best to see Life with zero expectations and knowing very little about the premise (e.g. don't watch the trailer). A tense thrill-ride with an excellent acting assemble.
Really well executed and partially exciting sci-fi horror that doesn't manage to reinvent the wheel nor even tries to. While the look of the space station is close to the realism of Gravity, the trope in which every tense situation kills off one crew member is old and not particularly surprising. The creature is pretty cool, at least. Unfortunately they went with a real shitty shock ending. If I ever wanna see pretty well known actors die rather horrible deaths I would....oh wait, no I don't, ever. Too bad about the really good first half.
I've often wondered how humanity would react to the knowledge of there being life on other planets, even if that life-form is a single-cell organism. Even discovering that, as minor as it might seem to some of the more uneducated sectors of the world, would be the greatest accomplishment of humanity's short, in the grand scheme of things of how long the universe has been around, existence. I've always been of the belief that I would love to be able to live to be, even, 10,000 years old. When I think of all the advancements in technology, science, society, etc, etc, that I'm gonna miss due to the fact that this stupid body is only good for, at the most (in my case at least), 80 years is one of the greatest disappointments of my life. It's not that I would want to be immortal, it's just that I wish humanity could extend their lifespan exponentially than it currently sits at. That's neither here nor there, the point is that, again, discovering life on other planets would be a monumental accomplishment. Of course, this is a theme that has been explored in numerous other films. But, in these cases, it's always framed as a 'be careful what you wish for' type of scenario. And, I suppose, there's a kernel of truth to that. I mean, if you really think about it, if we discover life on other planets, especially if it's as complex as human beings are and not, necessarily, a single-celled organism, who knows whether they'd be hostile to us or not. We know nothing about them. This is just me speculating based on films I've seen, which is obviously not real life. But it is still something to think about. Though, of course, I've always been an ask questions first kind of guy. I don't want to make an impulsive decision based on what my instincts tell me because, it could very well turn out that those instincts are wrong. I suppose that's relevant to the film that we're talking about here. If I was one of the international space crew, I suppose I would have been one of the first to die, given, again, my predilection for assessing the situation before making a decision. Though, let's be fair, the moment Calvin latches on to my arm like he did to Hugh (and proceeded to break it), my survival instincts would kick in. And, yes, the life-form in question really is named Calvin (some kids at this elementary school got to pick it). The crew is hunted down, and some are killed, by an alien named Calvin. Anyway, we're getting ahead of ourselves here. The movie sees the crew discovering a life-form from this Mars capsule. Of course, there's a lot of science talk that I'm not even gonna bother going into, because I would just fry everyone's brain. Essentially things started to go wrong once they start to notice that Calvin quickly grows into a multi-cell organism, is uncommonly smart and is able to survive in temperatures similar to ours, though with obvious...differences, in that he can survive outside in space, where there is no oxygen, longer than he probably should. Regardless, every time he consumes a living being, starting with a lab rat, he gets bigger and bigger. Not to mention that he gets bigger, seemingly, every time the crew sees him, it's also that the fucking thing seems to be unkillable and adapts itself to whatever situation he is put on. Having said that, I suppose I should mention that I definitely enjoyed my time with this movie. Of course, I suppose that I should also mention that there is literally no original bone in this film's body. It's every trapped in space movie you've ever seen. The comparison to Alien is, quite frankly, almost way too obvious. And, sadly, as great as Alien is, comparing this to that high standard is always gonna end up going badly for this film. I mean, really, it doesn't always have to be unfavorable. Like I said, there's no original bone in this film's body, but I still felt that it made for an entertaining horror movie. First of all, Calvin the alien feels like a an actual threat. But there's also something that a character mentions and that's that Calvin doesn't hate the humans he's attacking, he just needs to eat them to survive. And, of course, it's a throwaway line, but it's not something that you normally think about in films like this and, sadly, it's not something that's explored further than this line. I mean, I guess I wouldn't know exactly where you go with that concept, but I'm just wondering aloud as to how interesting it would be if done correctly. The movie is also very nice to look at. While, obviously this is not the technical masterpiece that Gravity was, the special effects in this movie are really strong. And, honestly, as far as special effects are concerned, I always seem to gravitate more towards these set in space films. What I mean by that, is that I always seem to get into the visual aspects of those films more than, say, a Guardians of the Galaxy, which still has impressive effects, but it just doesn't grab me as much. If that makes sense. The film is also very well cast, there are strong performances from, pretty much, everyone in the cast. There's not much character development, for sure, since it's concerned more with the survival of the crew and getting them out of this situation, but I liked the characters. There's enough personality to them for their deaths to not feel meaningless. And, of course, the horror is just strong all around. It's obviously not gonna change the world, but, as I mentioned, Calvin feels like a real threat here. He feels like that simply because, no matter what you do to him, he withstands absolutely everything that is thrown his way. No kind of extreme heat or lack of oxygen can really stop him from accomplishing his goals. I'm not saying that Calvin is a supervillain like The Joker or, for a more recent example, Thanos, but he is a good enough monster for this type of film. There's also a good amount of gore here. Perhaps nothing too extreme, but it is definitely good as well. I liked the ending as well, given that it is appropriately bleak. I mean, in short, this is just a solidly-made movie where, while it doesn't master any of its individual elements, it shows enough mastery over all of them for it to add up to a good horror movie. This is obviously never going to be a horror classic, nor was it really meant to be. What it does offer is a solid, enjoyable entry into a subgenre that we are all familiar with. Good movies, really, are hard to come by (even if you pick and choose) and this is, in my opinion, a good movie (whether it's a horror or not). Obviously, the arthouse crowd isn't gonna gravitate toward this, but genre enthusiasts should find something to enjoy here.

The movie is ribald, funny and sometimes sweet, and well acted by Murphy, Lawrence and a strong supporting cast. And yet the more you think about it, the more peculiar the movie seems.

Gracefully bittersweet and balanced. [16 April 1999, Calendar, p.F-1] No show-business tradition is sturdier than the two-man comedy team, and no contemporary stars are better suited to the format than Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence. Pairing them was a terrific idea. Lawrence and Murphy make an entertaining team.
